Locked On ACC - Daily College Football & Basketball Podcast - Quarterback Competitions In The ACC... Is UNC's Battle Decided? Best Bet To Win Conference In 2024
Episode Date: May 2, 2024The North Carolina Tar Heels have the most competitive battle at starting quarterback heading into the 2024 football season. Will it be transfer Max Johnson or returning backup Conner Harrell? Will Ja...colby Criswell, who just returned from Arkansas, make it a 3-man race? Locked On Tar Heels host Isaac Schade joins hosts Alex Donno and Kenton Gibbs to break down the quarterback battle and explain why Max Johnson is likely to come out on top. Donno and Gibbs describe the psychology of the situation and wonder if Virginia HC Tony Elliot will settle on Tony Colandrea or Tony Muskett as UVA’s starter. Of the conference favorites like Clemson, Florida State, Miami, Louisville and NC State, who is the best bet based on the Fan Duel odds? Donno makes the case for making a cheeky play on Stanford.Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors! Monopoly GO!Get in the game and join your friends. Got a loaded house here today.
Of course, I'm Alex Dono from Lockedon Cains.
Kenton Gibbs from Lockdown Wolfpack.
As always, Kenton, how you doing, sir?
Oh, I'm great as always, man.
I'm ready to get into it.
You know, it's always great to see you, Dono.
but it's even better when we get to pick on Isaac a little bit about why his team decided to not televise their spring game.
You know,
we,
the fans have questions.
The fans have questions that you're going to answer, Isaac.
I mean,
if Max Johnson might be your starting quarterback,
I don't know if I would want my team on TV, though.
So let's,
and here's my question,
though, Isaac,
will Max Johnson be the starting quarterback,
or could it be Connor Harrell,
or could it be Jacoby Chris Well,
who's now back in Chapel Hill.
How about this for funny?
I literally, as we hopped on, I just saw this.
So Jacoby Chriswell was the one in the quarterback competition with Drake May two years ago leading up to the season.
Mack Brown didn't announce Drake May as the starter until game week of week zero against FAU.
No, FIU, there's too many F something used.
Whatever.
And so Jacoby Chris well left after that year to go to Arkansas has just come back this week.
Here's what's funny. Tad Hudson, who was one of Carolina's quarterbacks, then left,
transferred this week to Coastal Carolina. Guess where a Coastal Carolina quarterback just
transferred to this, like today. Arkansas. So Arkansas, wow. I was thinking to the other
coastal Carolina quarterback, but wow. Yes. So Blake Boda heads off to Arkansas. So we've got
Arkansas Carolina and coastal Carolina in a little three team swap. Here's the deal. Max Johnson,
Connor, Harold, that that is going to be this quarterback competition.
at least initially here, I think that Jacoby Chriswell is going to be behind the eight ball on it,
just because he comes in after spring.
I know he's returning to Chapel Hill, but he's returning to a new offensive coordinator in Chip Lindsay,
whom he didn't have when he left to go to Arkansas last year.
And so to me, this at least on paper, and at least as we head out of spring practice,
is down to Connor Harrell or Max Johnson.
And look, for me, it's a conversation about a guy in Connor Harrell that I think actually has a higher ceiling despite the fact that he has less experience, you know, started the bowl game last year against West Virginia since Drake May didn't play.
Max Johnson obviously brings in four years of experience at the SEC level, a couple years, you know, doing that.
But I just, I don't know that Max Johnson has it, although you can, you kind of.
come out of spring practice and it feels pretty even playing field, at least in terms of what
they're looking at. There's no announcement yet from Mack Brown. And I wouldn't be surprised,
same as we had two years ago with Drake May and Jacoby-Criswell if we're riding this thing
all the way up until game week. And I really hate that because as the old adage goes,
if you got two quarterbacks, you've got none. But let me, let me ask you this, Isaac.
In terms of all of the quarterback battles in the ACC, is that one the most intriguing to you?
that one the one that you're looking at to say like this is the most dynamic because i'm going to be
very honest to me it is because this is the first one where you see this feels like a soap opera this
feels like days of our lives chapel hill edition because you're like oh man we we finally figure out
who's the start between these two and it's like this character from season three is coming back
so it it feels like this has a ton of intrigue and moving parts to it what say you i'm completely
with you and honestly part of the reason it's the most intriguing in the acc and donno and our
talking about this a little bit ago is there really aren't that many quarterback battles in our
conference this year, fellas, heading into the fall. At least not right now. Maybe we can manufacture
some, so we get some more days of our lives actually going on, Kenton. But another interesting factor
in it is that Max Johnson's brother, Jake Johnson, is a really high, at least he was a high level
recruit, Jake Johnson, tied end that also comes along with Max. And so there's all this like family
dynamic too that really you know it's going to be if we're going soap opera with this thing it's like
you were supposed to love me but you loved my brother and you know like we're it's definitely
soap opera man and I'm here for it let's bring it on we're joined here by Isaac shade from
locked on tar heels talking UNC quarterback battles and you know you mentioned max johnson
very experienced um I don't feel like his ceiling is very high but but let me and North
Carolina has one of the best running backs in the country you know I'm in Hampton is he's a
stud of all studs, okay? So, you know, do you think that if North Carolina ends up with a
quarterback who maybe has a higher floor, lower ceiling, obviously that may be difficult coming off
of Drake May, who is, you know, the phenom that he was. But, you know, do you think North
Carolina has the type of offense that can still succeed even if the quarterback is maybe more
of a game manager than a playmaker? Yeah, that's the question for me, Dono, because not only are you
coming off of Drake May, which Kenton's like, whatever, dude, we handled him back to back
years. So, you know, what, fine. I'm a huge Drakeback guy, actually. I know, I know you are.
But and even before that, you know, you had a couple of years of Sam Howl. And so you've had back to back
quarterbacks that have both at the time they were playing are kind of recognized as the best
quarterback in Carolina history. And then you go to this. But I think you're on to something there,
Donald, that you really are looking more for a game manager kind of situation.
because whoever wins this, all you got to do is turn around and give the ball to Amari on Hampton.
Make sure you turn the right way, I guess.
And I hope that your line can do the job.
But you also got to remember you get back.
I mentioned Jake Johnson, but North Carolina in the tight end room gets back Bryson Nesbitt
and gets back John Copenhaver out wide.
They get back guys like Kobe Pesor, J.J. Jones, Nate McCollum.
And I know Tess Walker's gone.
I know, there's those things.
But there is a lot of returning at the skill positions for the offensive side of the football.
And so that gives me some hope.
And there's some really high level freshman receivers coming in as well.
Now, not anything like what the Wolfpack had last year in a certain young man that just went bonkers and banana whackers.
So way to go with that.
But yeah, I think as long as you can just find your dudes, do the job, whether it is,
Connor Harrell or Max Johnson or heck even Jacoby Chriswell I don't want to rule it out there's hope for
the offense so let me ask you this okay because there is another quarterback battle we don't have a
ton but we got one quarterback battle that's pretty interesting because the guy who came in the chapel hill
and led UVA to a top 10 upset is seen as a guy that the fans don't want in UVA
everybody's sipping the Tony Calandria Kool-Kul-A which leaves Tony Musket a little bit on
out there. And you know, you being a guy that covers UNC that saw that game and how it
transpired, what are you thinking in looking at that quarterback battle? Are you like, you know,
maybe you go with the proven product who's a little bit more stable or like we talk about
with UNC quarterback battle, go with the high upside guy that, you know, he has those moments
where he's young, but the ceiling is through the roof. Sure. You know, Ken, I think with both
these both the Virginia one because that's a great comparison between the two both with the
Virginia one and the North Carolina one. The problem is, as you alluded to earlier, the adage
of if you got two, you got none. So I almost think you pick your guy and ride them until you can't,
whichever way that is. And it could be different for each team, depending on how these coaches
want to handle it and how the on field success goes. I think in both of these quarterback battles,
there will be connectivity to the rest of the team.
I think there will be how do they lead through the summer and fall camp?
I think there, you know, there's just all those intangibles that you know better than I do it as being a guy that's done it at a high level.
And so, Kent, I would almost turn it back around to you and say, if you're a defender, which of those guys would you rather not see?
If you're Kenton Gibbs in his prime, who do you not want out there?
And that's who I would want to go with.
Ah, that's a great way of phrasing.
And I'll tell you, I think it depends on what your team does well.
Because if you're looking at a UNC team,
you know, like you said, you've got the playmakers.
Just be accurate.
I don't want to see Max Johnson.
Give the guy that's going to put the ball in danger.
You know, hey, leave that Omarii guy alone.
He's probably tired.
He don't want to run the ball no more, you know.
And on the flip side of that, at UVA, if I'm talking about who I don't want to see,
I don't think that they have the horses in the stable to where if you got a guy that's just like, I'm going to throw it to you when you're open.
Well, who's going to get open?
Yeah, put Tony Musk in back there.
Hey, put the guy that's not going to put the ball in arms way back there.
He'll have a good time trying to find it.
And I'll find him before he finds an open to see how about let's have some fun.
That makes a lot of sense to me, man.
Well, we appreciate your time.
He is Isaac Shade, who is double duty here, as Kenton and I both do as well.
We're three of the hardest working people on this network.
How about that?
Isaac not only brings you locked on tar heels,
he brings you locked on college basketball.
So this will certainly not be the last time we talk to Isaac once football season gets closer in basketball season.
So enjoy the rest of your day, sir.
And we'll see who comes out on top in that UNCQB battle.
Thanks, fellas.
Have a good one.
Appreciate all you do.
Excellent job, as always there by Isaac and Kenton.
Let me just switch my background here.
Look at this magic.
Kenton, I want to talk with you a little bit more about that Virginia quarterback battle when we come back.
And also, I'm looking at preseason futures for the ACC, who we think is going to win ACC player of the year, offensive, defensive, who's going to win the conference?
And also we take a look at those fan dual odds.

So Kent, you mentioned it earlier when we were talking with Isaac about the Virginia quarterback competition.
right? Are we musketeers or are we Calandria heads? Like I couldn't think of a good of a good thing.
I prefer Calendriites. I prefer Calendriites. I like that. Are we musketeers or Calandriites? Now,
you know, the overwhelming popular opinion among UVA football fans is Calandria. Calandriaites all over the place.
That's who all their fans want to see. And I think there's a little bit of frustration with the way that Tony Elliott
handled it in spring where they were splitting reps,
where the logic being, if most people feel like Calandria is going to be the guy,
are you doing him a disservice by not giving him most of or all of the first team reps?
Are you hindering his preparation for the upcoming sea?
Now, some would counter and say, but it's only spring.
We'll see what happens in the fall.
But are you hindering his readiness to be the full-time starter next year
if you insist on him splitting reps with Musket?
I would say that he absolutely is, but I would also say that this is kind of hedging your bets a little bit.
This is if Calandria does, if his lack of ball control, if his putting the ball in danger gets so flagrant to where it's like, all right, we can't live with this anymore.
Then your obvious play is to say, you know what, let's go ahead and go with Musket, who now has a little bit of experience in terms of rocking with.
in terms of rocking with the first train guys.
But here's my idea when it comes to that.
I am a firm believer that when you make a decision in life,
whether you are right or wrong,
you commit to that decision with everything in you.
If I'm going to die by Calandria,
I'm going to die by Calandria,
and I'm going to die knowing that I gave every single opportunity that I had
for him to get that feel of winning to doll it back,
to give him that moment of I have as much chemistry as I have
or possibly can with my receivers,
I want him to have that.
I'm not going to sit up here and play around and say,
well, let's kind of split this thing.
Let's let it play out.
The reality is simple.
Calandria is, again, the bigger playmaker,
higher-up side guy.
And if they were a more established team with more established,
much playmakers around him, I would be on the side of musket.
I really would.
I would say, you know what?
Don't put the Mercurial guy into a lineup that is stable enough.
And as long as he doesn't lose the game, they'll probably win.
It's like having those quarterbacks when Bama's run first got started.
None of those guys were on to play in the NFL.
AJ McCarran was nothing in the NFL with all due respect to him.
He was nothing in the NFL.
But you know what he did in college?
He kept the ball out of harm's one.
wait, on time, on target, we're fine. And you can do that when on time and on target means
Julio Jones is on the other side. You can't do that when on time and on target means a receiver
that likely would not be starting at any other power for school is the guy that you're throwing
to. So with where this team is and with the fact that they're going to need a dynamoic quarterback,
take your risk, but lean fully into the young guy would be my advice.
You said something there that got my attention because I'm thinking about this.
What you said about when you make a decision, whether it's right or wrong, you commit to it.
Those words, I don't believe apply to real life, but they do apply to football.
Because the psychology in football, not all the rules applied to real life.
And I say this because in life in general, too much stubbornness is not always a good thing.
If you make a wrong decision, right?
But I can see what you're saying in football because quarterback musical chairs can be a dangerous game.
And it goes back to what you were saying about, you know, when you have two quarterbacks, you have none.
Because we've seen it sometimes where we've seen it in college.
I've seen it in the NFL where a head coach named someone the starting quarterback, but then the leash is short, right?
And then the first time they throw an interception, you bring in the other guy.
First time he throws an interception, you go back to the original guy.
usually what ends up happening, not always, but usually you just end up destroying the psychology of both of those players.
You end up dividing the locker room because sometimes certain factions could side with one quarterback of the other.
There's very few examples of something like that working.
Now, I think one of those did happen last year because, you know, and Nick Sabin is usually the guy who gets this stuff, right?
When he benched Jalen Milro for that USF game last year that Alabama almost lost and then they go back to Milrow.
the following week and he looks like a different quarterback after that.
So I'm not going to say it's never worked.
But when you have a short leash with quarterbacks, it usually backfires.
Oh, absolutely.
And everybody doesn't have the fortitude of a young man who will let a naysay or no.
Everybody doesn't have that type of fortitude, you know?
That's just the reality of what we're looking at there.
And that's why I say you have to rock with and die with the guy that you go with.
Because we all know in real life, absolutes only exist in the world of baby.
and fools. But to
the rest of us, there needs to be nuances
of color in this thing. For what we're
talking about for football purposes,
absolutely. You cannot,
if you decide to play around
and say, well, you know,
I like Calandria, but Muscat needs
to have some experience and all that. Again, I
think that you're hindering your guy
who could be the guy that
makes those dynamic plays that are
going to get you where you need to go. But more
importantly, I need to say
this. Honestly and truly,
Tony Musk's resume coming into the situation was good.
It was not great enough to warrant still having this competition go back and forth with all due respect.
Like if you look at the statistical chasm between those two last year,
it's not particularly close.
In the games that they played last year, Tony Calandria played eight games.
Tony Caledra played in a total of eight games.
Tony Muscat played in a total of six.
Tony Calandria total 2,183 yards overall.
Caledrio, I'm sorry, Muscat, 1097.
I don't think it's that close to even have this debate and this argument.
I really don't.
I don't see why Elliot's playing around.
I mean, I get it.
He's the head coach.
He sees things that we don't.
But the objective truth is, when that ball was put down on the line,
and it was who's going to go out there and get it done?
There's not a hard end.
answer here, who do you want to be your starting power forward? Charles Barkley or the creator
of Charles Swab? Not a real tough thing. Not something that I'm like, oh my God, I'm lost. Who do I want
to do it? Well, coming up next, I look at the teams that are atop the list on Fanduil as potential
ACC winners, Clemson, Florida State, Miami, NC State, Louisville. Who's going to be? Who's
got the best value. If we're going to put a futures bet on this tonight on Fanduel, who is the best
value proposition? Who's going to win offensive and defensive player of the year this year in the
ACC? My friends, I'm getting excited for football and you want to keep it locked right here.
We're not done yet on this brand new episode of Locked on ACC.

Thank you so much for making this episode of Locked on ACC your first listen
and your first watch today.
Alex Donno from Locked on Cains, Kenton Gibbs from Lockedon Wolfpack.
And so, you know, Kenton, I can certainly see some value in the team that you cover.
When I look at these fan duel preseason odds to pick an ACC champion, now I'm not necessarily saying NC State is the team that I expect to win the championship.
But when you're talking about placing a futures bet, you can get NC State at plus 900.
That would mean on Fan duel if you bet $100 on the Wolfpack to win the conference and they pull through, that's $900.
you're getting back, right? You compare that to, and I've noticed
these lines have moved a little bit because as of a couple days ago, Florida
State were the slight odds on favorite. And now Florida State and Clemson have the same number
at plus 280. So between those two, I think better value on Florida State. Like I don't really
think Clemson should be co-favorite. So I would prefer the value at Florida State plus 280 over
Clemson at plus 280. Miami, the team that I cover, has made obviously a lot of noise in the transfer
portal, and they've really revamped their offense with Cam Ward and Damien Martinez. They are
a third after FSU and Clemson at plus 450. And I don't know, Kenton, I got to see how the dust
settles with Louisville. I know that there's been a lot of, you know, some negativity about the
way that their portal has gone with the outgoings. They've also brought in some really good players,
Louisville's at plus 500.
So I'm probably not going to rush to put my money on them at this moment.
But a few of these I can see value in.
Yeah, absolutely.
And I'll tell you this much.
I hate to do this, but the team that I see no value in here is absolutely Louisville.
I'm not taking that plus 500.
I'm just not doing it.
Again, it's not even about Tyler Shuck at this point.
It's that there is too much there.
I'm looking at too many red flags coming out of that team coming out of spring.
for me to say, hey, you've got the fourth best odds out of everybody to get this thing done.
Right.
I like Brown a lot as a coach.
I like Brown a lot.
Would I be shocked for them to have a good season?
Absolutely not.
Would I be shocked if they won the ACC?
Yes, very much so.
Because, again, I think when you talk about winning the ACC, I think you can get by, win some games,
get to a good spot to where you're competing, maybe one or two breaks to go your way.
and you end up in the conference championship with Tyler Shub being me.
I don't think that you can win it with that.
I think to win it, you're going to need something that is like phenomenal.
And I don't mean like good.
I mean phenomenal.
And I think Louisville's front, defensive front, has a chance to be that.
But I'm not sure offensively they have anything where I'm like, yeah, I can see them
winning a game against any of the other teams that we look at as a top team.
But in terms of best value, I hate to be a homer.
you're absolutely right.
That plus 900 for NC State.
I'm a big believer that quarterbacks normally need two years in terms of guys who come in in the portal and all that good stuff in terms of what they need and how they get it done.
But here's the thing that I think is so interesting.
I don't think that people are properly realizing how good NC State skill position players are this year.
Like there are some freakish stuff going on that nobody's like, wait, what?
Noah Rogers, an absolute stud of a wide receiver on the outside, came back to Raleigh,
a Raleigh native who came back to Raleigh.
And, you know, you talk about Dekari Collins, who came on late last year,
transferred him for Clemson, 6'4.
He can absolutely do it.
And I haven't even mentioned the freshman All-American in terms of Kevin Concepcion,
who, I mean, he's the Debo Samuels of college football, put him in the backfield,
put him in the slot, put him out wide, puts a ball in his hand for,
Christ's sake, that's all the fact. He's probably, you know, outside of, outside of Miami guys,
if I have any bias there, Casey Concepcion is probably my favorite player in the conference.
I love that dude does everything. And watch this. You add the tackle breaking against tight end in the
country in Justin Jolie. You add an all conference back who was last year at Duke in Jordan
Waters. I don't think that people are giving proper credence and credit to just how good they are.
And with all due respect, if I'm looking at a Tony Gibson coach defense and I'm saying that the linebackers are the weakness, I'm fine with that.
I'm all right.
He finds a way to come up with all these linebackers that you come into the scene.
Like, wait, who are these guys?
When people think about the lineback cord density state and they think Peyton Wilson, who was a super highly taughty guy, they think Drake Thomas, who was also fairly sought after coming out of high school.
Isaiah Moore had one division one offer.
I'm sorry, one power four offer, not division one.
He had one power for offer.
That was NC State.
That's it.
And he turned Isaiah Moore into one of the leading tacklers in the conference
every year for multiple years straight.
So I'm a firm believer.
If anybody can whip up some magic can be the fairy godmother
or fairy godfather of linebackers,
I believe it's Tony Gibson.
So I think that this team can absolutely get it done.
And on top of that, I hate to bring this up, the basketball team lifted the curse because, you know, NC State had not won an ACC championship in football, basketball, or baseball in over 30 years.
Last time they won a conference championship, Donald was just a young lad that was riding around his bicycle around the neighborhood.
And I wasn't born yet.
I wasn't even on earth yet.
So, you know, I think that that definitely adds in to you looking at NC State football and saying, it may be finally.
time for Dorn to get his spike year.
And it seems like a perfect storm for them to get it done in terms of winning the ACC.
Now, hear me out.
If you really want to change your life, you put $100 bucks on Stanford to win the ACC.
Because Kenton, I'm looking at the, you know, who knows, there may be like a whole bunch
of great players from other teams slip on banana peels on their way to the game or the team
bus gets lost, you know, the GPS doesn't work or something.
I'm looking at Stanford, plus 50,000, Kenton.
You put a hundred bucks on the Cardinal, and they pull off the miracle of all me.
I mean, Leicester City once won the Premier League, and there was odds like that crazy things
have happened in this world, right?
No one thought Buster Douglas was going to beat Mike Tyson.
You put a Hyundai on Stanford, and they pull it off.
You get a $50,000 return on that $100 bet.
So just something to consider.
Something to consider once we head in.
I'll tell you what, if Elijah Brown and Marcus Brown are the greatest cousin duo of all time at Stanford,
and they turn into this passing combination that the world has never seen before,
congratulations to people who do believe in the Cardinal.
Congratulations to the people who do fear the tree, because you have officially, you have officially, you know, this ain't the 70s,
no more where $50,000 is like, oh, nothing's ever the same again.
But you can pay off that car.
You can put a car payment on the house.
You can do a lot of money.
You know what I mean?
Hey, and hear me out.
Hear me out.
If you put $200 on the Cardinal, get $100,000 back.
Yeah, yeah.
Hey, listen, I hear you.
I hear, now I think that there are better ways to spend $200, like you
can donate it to charity or, you know, you can do something a law and those.
I think the return there would be much better.
But if Stanford were to pull off the upset of the century,
if they were to come out and say,
huh, the ACC really is easy.
I guess us nerds can get it done in this conference.
I would be shocked,
but somebody would be very rich.
Somebody would be,
and it sounds to me like Dono is the person
who would be very rich the way his eyes are lightened up a little bit here.
As I think about this, okay,
I'm kind of running an inventory on my entire life.
And in my 39 years on this planet,
I can't tell you that I haven't spent $200 in more irresponsible ways.
Oh, absolutely.
That would not be my most irresponsible use of $200 in my life.
So something to consider.
I want to get into it again tomorrow a little bit more on preseason picks for
ACC defensive and offensive player of the year.
I'm definitely going to make a case for Cam Ward.
I loved what I saw from him in Spring Ball.
There are definitely some young men we can talk about as potential defensive players of the year.
I think a hot candidate for that could be in Florida State right now,
maybe even one in NC State right now.
So my friends, thank you so much to Isaac Shade for joining us.
We will talk to you guys again tomorrow.
He's Kenton Gibbs at TGIF underscore Kenton.
I am Alex Dono.
Follow me on X at Alex Dono.
We'll talk to you next time on another episode of Lockdown ACC, part of the Lockdown Podcast Network.
Your team every day.
