If you asked us a few years ago, who's the best football coach in the ACC?
Easy answer was Davosweeney.
It's not that easy anymore, but I'm going to try to talk Kenton into Mario Cristobal being the guy.
You are Locked on ACC, your daily podcast on the Atlantic Coast Conference.

about the ACC basketball race for the coveted double buys.
Only the top four can grab them.
Who's in there right now?
Who's in the mix to get there before the season ends?
But let's talk top football coaches, Kenton, in the ACC.
Now, I have tasked you with the homework of getting me a top five.
And I know when I say Mario Cristobal should be number one, I know I'm going to get backlash.
I'm not sure if I'm going to get it from you, but I know I'm going to get the backlash,
because Kenton, I have people in my own family.
I have some Florida state fans in my family.
But people in my own family will tell you when they didn't take that knee against Georgia Tech three years ago,
like that forever disqualified him forever being at the top of any power ranking.
But I cover college sports for a limit.
And in this game, Kenton, it's not just about the timeouts you call, the decisions you make.
big part of college coaching is being the architect of a roster and program building, right?
That's what makes college football different from NFL football.
And I believe when you include recruiting, transfer portal, program building,
the architecture of what Miami football was before he took over and what it is now,
that's why I believe Mario Cristobal, with all the pieces to the puzzle,
deserves consideration for top coach in the ACC.
see if you're just going by who calls the best timeouts and who does the best job with their
coaches challenges, yeah, that's probably not the guy.
But when you include every aspect of building a program, I believe Mario Cristobal has that
case to be number one.
So Dono, here's my question.
Because I came up with multiple lists.
Dono didn't know.
He knew I was doing a little bit of extra research, but he didn't know how much knowledge
I was doing here.
I didn't know that.
Here's the list that I compiled.
Who has been the best so far?
are who I would want if I had to drop them off in the middle of a just middle of the road ACC program.
We don't know who.
We just dropped them off or who would I want for this year.
Like who do I feel like has set their team up for the best of this year?
So which one would you prefer, Donna?
Which one are we going with?
Give me the last.
Let's start with the last criteria first.
All right.
If we're going with who I believe set their team up in the best way to be successful this year,
which y'all see how Donald picked that one because he knew it was going to be skewed towards his guy.
I know what I'm doing.
We got to go.
We got to go with Mario.
He's the obvious answer.
In terms of who has built his program in a meaningful, sustainable way, he is on an extreme uptrent.
However, I will warn, there was a similar Florida team that was on a similar uptrend that had two back-to-back, 10 win-plus seasons,
And we said, oh man, this guy's cooking now.
He's built for something special now, and they fell off the face of the earth.
They sure did.
Miami's roster construction is very different from that of what Florida State was doing.
They lead much more heavily on high school recruiting than Florida State did at that time.
But, again, this is why I'm talking about who set their team up the best for this upcoming season.
He has to be number one.
And then my next guy in, we talked about Miami.
at one, hell, we got to go Miami West at two.
Rhett lastly has continued to show up and show out.
And to be honest,
Rhett, if we were talking about list number two,
which was I got to drop you off at a random ACC team,
who do I think builds a winner first?
I think it's rent.
It's either him or Brahm to me.
It's one of those two.
Here's why I say it's red.
When you look at what he took over,
he took over a team that in the 20th century,
all they were known for is the death penalty.
That's it.
That's it.
And what did he take him to?
Not one, not two, but three straight conference appearances,
one defensive stop away from four straight conference appearances,
including a jump up from G6 to P4 in the middle.
You've got to get that man, his gots.
He is an extremely successful head coach,
and his team is prime to be successful for a long time.
Number three is the guy that you just named.
I got to go Bram.
Got to go Bram.
He has set a floor at Louisville that you consistently know.
You consistently know eight wins, minimal.
Yeah.
Wins is what you're looking at.
And a lot of people see that as a knock against Bram,
but I have long argued which multiple ACC coaches
are currently proving right,
including my guy, Dave Doran,
he proves me right with this theory as well.
There's about 12 schools in America
where winning eight games a year will get you fired.
Louisville ain't one of them.
It's not one of them.
He's going to win eight games a year,
and he's going to get that team to build him a statue
outside of Papa John Stadium or wherever they're calling it now.
He's going to get a statue.
It's always Papa John Stadium to me,
no matter what they're calling it at this moment,
It's always that.
My boy, Dono.
See, this is what we good together.
His mama named is Papa John Stadium.
We're going to call him Papa John Stadium.
Number four in terms of, again, when we look at who has set their team up for success going forward,
and this eliminated certain guys because James Franklin was between four and five on my first two list.
He cannot be on this list because he is the first year head coach.
And although he has done well in the portal, I would not feel good about putting him
at a kind of four or five spot for that.
But I got to say Dabo.
I got to say it.
Yes, he's taking a tumble.
He's taking a fall.
We don't know what's going on with this team.
But as long as they're the Tigers,
as long as Dabo is walking up and down those sidelines,
do you ever really feel like, yeah,
we could bookmark this team for seven or less wins?
No, no.
Even last year, the fact that they did get seven.
Nevertheless, you still don't feel comfortable saying that's going to happen again.
Yeah, that was like the worst case scenario last year.
Exactly, exactly.
And so dabble has to go at my four based on that.
And again, when we talk about this list, it is about who put their team in position to succeed.
So I know I'm going to got some heat for this.
Yeah.
But it's got to be old Dave Dorr.
It's got to be old day door.
Yeah, no argument.
Yeah, no argument.
When you look at what's going on for next year,
right if you talk about again when we talk about who's done the most up to this point i would put
manny d a head of doran i would put a lot of other guys ahead of doran i would put narduzi ahead of
dorm because narduzzi has an ac c championship doran does not i would definitely put them there
but both duke and pitt do you expect them to win more games than c state next year no i don't
okay okay so with that in mind dora may have been there for forever and you may say
his ceiling is very low, but his floor is very high.
He's the second part of that eight wins a year to get your statue.
He's one of the top ten winning his coaches in all of college football right now.
That is a factual statement.
Whether you think it's impressive or not, whether you think it's a jump off the page 10 or not,
whether you know like, oh, he's going to win one that he shouldn't,
he's going to lose one that he shouldn't.
Year in, year out, whether you think that that's okay or not,
the objective proof is in the pudding in terms of who I'm,
look at and say your team needs to win seven to eight games or more, I'd be disappointed.
Those are the only ones.
If Dicker wins less than eight, you're not disappointed.
Both of the bills are terrible.
Fran Brown, his team ain't good.
You got a bunch of first year head coaches.
So that eliminates Virginia Tech, that eliminates Cal, that eliminates Stanford off the back.
So who are you left within this conference to say they need to do better?
That Norville, we got a seat for you, brother.
We got a seat.
The ACC squad show is going to be jumping.
No, no, no, we got a seat here on locked on.
We're the number one podcast network.
You may not be number one on the field, but Norvelle,
we can make your number one in the podcast booth, baby.
So that's my top five.
Well, and don't we have an opening on the college football live show
because Gary Patterson got a job, and he back in coaching?
Because he was on the live show, so that could be Norvel's gig next year.
Hey, Norvel, what did you say going into last season?
We got to be desperate.
You got to be desperate to get off that unemployment line that you're going to be in.
You got to be desperate.
And we got a spot for you here at Lockdown.
Now, I want to get, when we come back, I want to get into your other list because Kent and Gibbs, you went above and beyond.
Like, you're working for extra credit now.
You've got multiple different criteria because my criteria was just a top five with all of the, you know, the things that I expect from a head coach where I've got Mario one, Rhett Lashley, two.
I've got Jeff Brom three.
I got Dabo four.
And I've got James Franklin five.
Although with James Franklin, though, still, I go back to this guy was at Penn State.
And he has a four and 21 record against top ten opposition.
So it's not like he was that was all at Vanderbilt, right?
I mean, it was at Penn State.
You couldn't beat a top ten opponent.
So there are some concerns there.
But, you know, I want to get more into DeKetton's extra credit when we come back.
You want to keep it locked right.
here we're only getting started on this brand new episode of LockdowneACC.

You know, Kenton, thinking about a couple of the other coaches you brought up,
obviously Pat Narduzzi has had intermittent success at Pitt.
You know, Mani Diaz comes off in ACC championship.
I think with the two of them, if I nitpick on them,
I just view them as not being the best CEOs of programs.
So Narduzi, unbelievable defensive mind, and his defenses at Pitt always show out, but inconsistencies, you know, other parts of the football.
Mani Diaz, on the other hand, when he's been a defensive coordinator, has always been brilliant.
And for some reason, when he's a head coach, his defenses are never as good as they are when he coordinates.
So there's just some contradictions with those guys.
But I agree with a lot of your analysis.
Yeah.
And so if I'm if I'm talking about the best career list, I know you're not going to agree with me here.
But Red Lashley has to go above Mario.
That was at the one.
You can't argue that.
You could say like Lashley has done more with less at Mario.
Like when Mario was at Oregon, resources galore.
Mario at Miami resources galore.
And that's that's where I was going there.
Mario Cristobal, proverbially here, was born on third base.
And it's like, don't get me wrong.
This last year is a higher peak than anything that Red Lashley has ever done.
However, Rett has made the floor at SMU higher than what we could imagine it at as Miami.
And we saw, we literally saw like, hey, these two teams, similar stages, and what was the difference there?
So, Red Lashley, you know, I have to put him at two if we're talking about best career achievements overall.
and Mario is obviously at three.
Brom is at four and Franklin's at five.
Some people will want me to switch those two, but again,
but again, the reality is the Vanderbilt job,
fantastic for Franklin.
Fantastic. I'll give you all your credit, all your props.
You got run out of town unceremoniously at Penn State.
That has to be factored in.
Brom has never been run out of anywhere.
Every time Brom left somewhere,
it was because he was going to a bigger place.
He had us thinking that Purdue,
was playing real football before the transfer board.
And they kind of were, actually.
They were.
They were.
You're right.
Stop thinking they play real football.
He had to do playing real football.
Playing against Michigan, playing against Ohio State,
playing against Cal, well, actually, I don't think,
not Cal, playing against all of these powerful Big Ten teams.
You're at this school that is just basically nothing in terms of football,
and you found ways to make them win.
I would say that Brom goes above Franklin because of that.
But the two that you just mentioned, they're definitely on honorable mention.
They're right on the outside looking in.
And this is one that with all due respect to Doran, he can't get on this pedestal
because all the guys that I've just talked about have multiple things in common.
And you know what all of them have?
ACC Championship appearance or National Championship appearance.
Each and every one of these guys have that.
Dabo, multiple-time national champion.
Red, ACC championship.
Championship appearance, Mario, National Championship of Parents,
Brom, ACC Championship Appearance, Franklin.
I believe he's coached his teams to Big Ten Championships.
So everybody except him has a power for conference championship appearance.
So in terms of total career accomplishment, again, Dave Doran has been consistent.
Steady Eddie, Steady Eddie, but Steady Eddie just hasn't gotten the accomplishments of some of these other guys.
So what do you do, by the way, because obviously we're talking.
talking about our top fives.
And, you know, neither of us mentioned, so the, the alleged greatest coach of all time
does not crack the ACC's top five.
I'm just like, I'm not trying to bait you into anything, but like, okay, one through 17.
Yeah.
17 ACC coaches.
Where do you rank Bill Belichick out of 17?
17.
Really?
Yeah, 17.
I don't know if I'd go that low.
Here's the deal.
Here's the deal.
And here's why he gets ranked 17 for me.
Okay. Matt Brown was in a very similar situation to what Bill Belichick was in. But it was even harder because it wasn't player movement wasn't what it was when Mac Brown was there that it is now. It was the exact same university. The resources did not decrease. They gave him. He wrote some Connors Stallion style manifesto of these are all the things I need to succeed. Do you think that the UNC admin,
looked at him and said, no, you're not getting any of those things.
No, they bent the knee.
Everything that he asked for.
Everybody he wanted those staff.
It's all him.
At least with Bill O'Brien, I could make the argument of, well, you play for, or you're
coaching for just a school that just ain't got no money in Boston College, whatever.
When you were at Penn State, we could objectively say you took over Penn State through
a very dark time.
This is post Joe Paul's passing.
This is post-Jole's passing.
and this is post everything coming out with what was happening with Sandusky and all.
It's a, you took over that in a dark time.
You at least showed us some promise on a collegiate level.
I can't give you credit for what you did on a professional level in collegiate.
This is not like the basketball Hall of Fame.
Sorry, we got strict rules than that, buddy.
You've got to have shown and proven something at the college level.
And I want to ask you, Dono, which coach has had a greater commitment of resources
with as overwhelming of a performance as Bill Belichick.
Nobody.
And let me add something because as you're talking about Bill Belichick,
I'm thinking about a different criteria that neither of us directly address this,
but I think you always have to consider this with college football head coaches.
Out of all 17 head coaches in the ACC,
and some of them we don't know a whole lot about.
You got some new coaches in the conference.
But I would say I would probably rank Bill Belichick,
dead last in the category of someone who's doing this for the right reasons and is going to take
care of your son, right? Because I'm thinking about, you know, if ever I have the luxury of
my son being, you know, a power four level football recruit, right? I'm thinking about because,
you know, I've been pretty harsh on somebody like Fran Brown, but you know what? If I send my son
to play for Fran Brown, I know he's going to have my child's best interest at heart and he's
doing it for the right reasons, right?
Yes. Belichick, I don't know if he's doing it just for the ego, the legacy.
He's letting the wacky girlfriend handle everything.
Like, I don't know.
I just, I don't get the sense that he cares about the young men that he's coaching.
I don't think he's doing it for them.
I think he's entirely doing it for his ego and his legacy.
And that's the worst part about it, Dono.
There is no facet by which you can say Bill Belichick is winning this.
other than maybe if he's the type of guy
that like my name just has to be in the press in some way,
if that is his goal, then he has won.
But if his goal is to win football games,
if it is to garner PR,
if it is to build better young men,
if it is to do any of those things,
by every report that comes out about that team,
this has been an abject failure on every level.
So to me,
you can't really,
I can't put him anywhere,
other than 17 because I have seen nobody else have that level of support with that level of failure.
I just, I haven't seen it.
Now, if there is another team, if Wake Forest all of a sudden finds tens of millions of dollars to drop off in Dicker's lap and he goes off and pisses down his leg to a four-win season, we'll have a different conversation.
If Boston College finds a way that, hey, everything you want, Bill O'Brien, we're going to give you more money than the Brown's paid to Sean Watson.
but you've got to figure something out, and he does what he did last year,
we can have a different conversation.
But to see that you had what you needed,
every other coach in the ACC has done something successfully at the college level.
Every single one of Bill Belichick has me.
Yeah.
Well, when we come back, let's talk about the race for the coveted double buys in the ACC tournament,
because you've got your top four today that may not necessarily be your top four in a couple of weeks.
You want to keep it right here.
We're not done yet on this brand new episode of Locked on ACC.
I'm Kleea Butler, host of Locked on Women's Basketball.
And this is Mazda's Women's Basketball Snapshot, celebrating the work no highlight reel can ever capture.
It was a heavyweight showdown between number three South Carolina and number seven LSU,
and the game cost rose to the occasion.
South Carolina secured a hard fought 79 to 72 victory to stay atop the SEC standings,
using a balanced offensive attack to outlast the Tigers.
Tessa Johnson led the way with 21 points while Raven Johnson added 19.
Medina O'Kott dominated the paint with a double-double,
finishing with 12 points and 17 rebounds,
while Joyce Edwards chipped in 10 points to round out the scoring.
With the statement win, the Gengcocks now turn their attention to a road matchup
at number 23 Alabama on Thursday.
These moments are earned off the clock,
those long before the lights ever come on.
sweat, the fakes, the doubt, the scrapes, and coming back for more every time.
Mazda puts that same drive into every detail.
Winds define the moment, putting in the work, that defines you.
There's more to a Mazda because there's more to you.
Thank you so much for making Lockdown ACC, your first list.
For your next list, make sure you check out our other shows.
Kenton Gibbs and Grace and Boone host Lockdown Wolfpack talking all things, NC State.
I talk all things Miami on Lockdown Cains.
And Kenton, Miami and NC State are two teams that are fighting for that coveted double-by in the ACCC tournament, which the top four seeds get.
So currently, I think it's safe to say Duke is going to have their double-by, their 13-1 in conference.
I think mathematically they could technically lose it, but it's not happening.
13-1 in the ACC.
You got Virginia at 10-2, and then Clemson and Miami, the 3-4 seeds right now, both at 10.
and three. NC State is right there at 10 and 4, just on the outside looking in. Then you've got
North Carolina, Louisville still in play at 8 and 5, SMU at 7 and 6, I guess kind of in play.
Nobody else is really in play. And it seems like I look at the schedules for all these teams,
Kenton, like everybody's got at least a couple of ranked opponents still left to play in
conference. So outside of Duke, there are no guarantees. Well played, Jimmy Phillips. Well
close. Because all of these teams, you look at just what happened last night, a lot of these
teams that you're talking about matched up against one another, right? That Louisville team that
was trending in the right direction blowing everybody out, all of a sudden SMU catches
them slipping. And right when you think SMU is falling out of the picture, they say, oh, whoa,
whoa, whoa, hold on, hold on, play a hold on. Let's take our time here. And of course, you have the
UNC State game that, yes,
UNC was without two studs in Vassar and Wilson,
but the reality is if I'm bums and burs and never starve,
we live in the real world,
we deal with real results, right?
If I was Idris Elba, this podcast would probably have more listeners.
Unfortunately, I'm not, you know what I mean?
You look kind of like him.
I know people say we got similar levels of attractiveness.
I know they're like, Elba, Ken, like they're right there, right?
I get it.
If I take my contact lenses out, you're a dead ringer.
There we go.
There we go.
I appreciate that, Donna.
everybody, find somebody who a lot of you like Donald.
That's why he's got a successful marriage.
I've got a very strong prescription just so, you know.
But in all seriousness, you've got all of these things going on in the conference,
all of these really good teams.
And I'm going to tell you, Miami was real close against Virginia Tech to changing
some trajectories of seasons.
Because if Virginia Tech wins that game, all of a sudden, beyond the tournament
standings in terms of the ACC, you got some NCAA terms of.
tournament standards because Virginia Tech was a work-to-do team and they were this close to securing
that victory. So this is a ton of really, really good stuff. And like you said, a lot of these teams
playing each other down the stretch. They're going to be, you know, you're going to get opportunities.
You're going to see these teams. If you haven't seen them already, you're going to see them for a second
time or first time, rather. And if you've already seen them, some of these teams are going to have
epic rematches, like what we're looking at with NC State and Virginia. Like what we're
looking at with the Battle of the Blues between North Carolina and Duke,
like what we're looking at with so many of these teams that still have great games
coming down the stretch.
So Clemson's right there, of course, doing their thing.
You know, from Clemson down, I really do look at these teams at conferences.
I say, anybody can get in that top four, anybody can get knocked out of the top four.
I think Duke and UBA are pretty safe.
But I'm telling you, the battle for that three and four seed is heating up in all of these
teams got to see each other, which means it's not just like if you win this game, you get a half
game and you might lose a half game. No, no, no. When y'all lock horns, somebody's going to get
one game guaranteed on the other. Yeah, because like I look for, for example, you know,
UNC is there the sixth seed right now. You know, they're one in the loss column behind NC
State who's right there. NC State has the same number of wins as Miami. They're one behind
the lost column. But like UNC,
still left to play
Kenton in the regular season.
You know, they've got number 21
Louisville, who is capable of doing
great things. You know, they still
have Clemson, who's a top
three seed right now, and they still have a
road game at Duke. You know, and they beat Duke
at home earlier this year, so that's
going to be a monster.
So it's like NC State has an opportunity
to get in the top four, but they still
have kind of a gauntlet left in their final
five, six games. Oh, absolutely.
But I mean, multiple teams have a gauntlet.
of the North Carolina teams for whatever reason
that are in this thing have gone
list, right? The first and second
toughest schedules, I believe it was what?
Like a week ago, that's what they were ranked
coming out and finishing. And I'm going to tell you,
this is the one break, the
one absolute break, and nobody
can deny this. It's not like they
did anything to earn it, not like they,
you know, it's not like it's a
terrible thing on their end. But Miami
secured themselves a massive break
coming down the stretch here because, yes, you
do have Virginia, and yes, you do
have Louisville, but you've got SMU, Boston College, Florida State.
SMU has shown.
When they're planning at their best, they can beat anybody.
When they're planning at their worst, they can lose anybody.
Boston College, absolutely terrible.
Basura, track.
Florida State this year, two thumbs out.
And they beat Miami already this year somehow, but, you know.
Yeah, and that's what I was saying.
These teams, even if you've seen somebody, you have rematches coming up.
So to see that game come up again, it's like, all right, does Jay Lucas and his guy?
get right,
don't get straight without some straightening.
And there's Jay Lucas and company
going to straighten out that Florida State loss
that they had earlier in the year.
This is a hell of an ACC finisher
that we're coming up for.
Everybody's playing everybody.
We don't got a bunch of scrub teams
playing really good teams where it's like,
oh, everybody, the good teams are going to win,
but everybody's going to hold their place.
No, no, no.
Y'all are going to walk up and y'all are going,
if you want to be in the driver's seat,
you'll get the opportunity.
You don't need help.
you've got to show up and do it.
Yeah, I love it.
ACC hoops these last couple weeks,
I think the ACC tournament starts March 10th.
Buckle up, my friends.
It's going to be a wild ride before we even get to that.
