Starting point is 00:00:00 The ACC bounced back on Selection Sunday, getting double the teams into the NCAA tournament from an embarrassing 2025, but there will be some tough roads. Let's talk about it. You are Locked on ACC, your daily podcast on the Atlantic Coast Conference. Part of the Locked on Podcast Network, your team every day. Shout out to the everydayers and thank you so much for making Locked on ACC your first listen. We're available free wherever you get your podcast. We're free on YouTube. We're part of the number one Lockdown Podcast Network, your team every day. He is Kenton Gibbs, former NC State Defense of linemen and co-host of Lockdown Wolfpack.
Starting point is 00:00:46 I am Alex Dono, host of Lockdown Cains, and today's episode is brought to you by Fanduel. Fanduel is giving you a way to turn that energy into even bigger potential wins with a college basketball parlay profit boost. Head to fanduel.com to get started. on this loaded episode. Florida State turned down a bid to the NIT. We'll explain why. But as far as the NCAA tournament goes, any surprises for you, Kenton?
Starting point is 00:01:14 Because I think for the most part, the eight teams that we thought would get in did. There are a couple of first four scenarios. I don't know if NC State was expecting to be an 11 and having to battle it out with Texas. SMU getting first four as well. But any curve balls from an ACC point of view. You know, I was surprised that NC State was not only given the first four,
Starting point is 00:01:35 but also given a rematch against a team that they'd already played earlier this season, which, oddly enough, that happened on the men's and women's side, even though the women's team, for NC State fair much better. We've got Tennessee on that side first round. And it's like, well, is the rematch thing still a thing, or is it not a thing? Or are we not caring about the thing? It's just some, you know, grade A foolishness. but at the end of the day, where as a whole,
Starting point is 00:02:03 do I see anything that was super surprising? No, I figured that SMU would be about an 11. Everybody else got about where I thought they would be. You know, I'm a little bit shocked to see that Virginia didn't end up on the two line. I thought that they were, I thought that their resume was strong enough, especially with how the committee valued, how different teams ended as like part of who ended up on what line.
Starting point is 00:02:28 I mean, Virginia, again, if you go through Virginia's schedule, find me a team that they lost to in the past month and some change, not named the Duke Blue Devils who are the number one overall seed in the tournament. You can't. You can't. So ultimately, I'm surprised that they didn't end up there, but, you know, it is what it is. Yeah, and you and I both know all too well how good Virginia is. They abused both of our teams, NC State and Miami in the ACCC tournament. And I guess one thing, Kenton, that Miami fans are upset about it's not the seeding, it's the location. So, you know, the NCAA or the selection committee, you could say to be technical, they gave Miami the seven seed that we were hoping for and expecting.
Starting point is 00:03:18 So that's good. But then you saw the opponent and the location. So seven seed Miami is taking on 10 seed Missouri in San Diego. Louis, Missouri. And it's at 10.10 p.m., which is just annoying. I don't know if the players care about that, but I do. But you're basically taking on a lower seed at home, right? I mean, I think about 90 minutes away from their campus. So it's weird the way that that one worked out. And you can understand why Miami fans are not too happy. Jay Lucas, to his credit, Miami's head coach, just said, this is business as usual for us. We don't care where we're playing them. But
Starting point is 00:03:55 Miami fans are salty about it. And you know what? It is a travesty because when you look at Missouri's resume up against Tennessee states, it's very similar. And yet somehow, and yet somehow, you know, one team ends up in the play in, another team ends up being rewarded with a home game, in essence, in the tournament.
Starting point is 00:04:15 It's really, it's disappointing to see that it ended up like this. And here's the thing, right? Jay Lucas is going to say, hey, it's just another day. line up and play basketball, right? You know, Will Wade is going to say, oh, we didn't get holes. We put ourselves here. Line up and play.
Starting point is 00:04:33 There are no victims in this room. That's what coaches are supposed to say. But guys like me and you, the media guys, we're supposed to point out, hey, this does not make sense. In the face of reality, this doesn't make sense because it doesn't. It doesn't. These things just do not add up. I remember a similar thing happened with women's basketball a few years ago where NC State ended up in the Connecticut region, and guess who was the two seed in the Connecticut region?
Starting point is 00:04:59 Yukon. Yukon? Yukon. You con. Oh, man. Oh, man. Now, by every stress of imagination, it did not make sense because they said that they do the S thing where they come around and say, okay, the worst one seed that should be in
Starting point is 00:05:13 as the same, in the same bracket of the top two seed and all that. And it was like, okay, but that still wouldn't equal Yukon being in this region. Y'all can be honest to say, hey, we just needed to make the money. because you guys are going to pack that thing out every time and just live with that. We don't have to tell these ridiculous lies to distort it. Well, we ended up with this because of this and that and the third. No, just say what it is, make it plain and let it be that. All right.
Starting point is 00:05:41 So here's the situation for the ACC, and we mentioned eight teams get in, which this is a blessing because last year was, it was embarrassing. Like last year, only getting four in. it was humiliating. So here are the seeds and the orders chronologically on when the teams will play. So you do have for Kenton, first four situation on Tuesday, 11 seed NC State taking on 11 Texas. You know, the winner advances into the proper bracket. 11 seed SMU will play 11 seed Miami, Ohio on Wednesday.
Starting point is 00:06:21 Miami, Ohio, the first team to ever reach the NCAA. CAA tournament despite no quad-won opponents on the schedule. But, you know, they had to carve out a weird exception for them because they went unbeaten all the way into their conference tournament. So, you know, they get in regardless. And we thought they would get in, but they're going to have to get through SMU to get into the proper part of the bracket. And, okay, then you fast forward to first round games on Thursday.
Starting point is 00:06:48 Number one, overall seed, Duke, is going to take on Sienna, 16 seed. Duke is favored by 29 and a half points, by the way. 11-seed South Florida will take on the ACC's number six-seed Louisville. That's East Region, the first two of those games in the South region. Six-seed North Carolina will take on 11-seed VCU, and then you get into Friday. Number seven-seed Miami in the West region is going to take on 10-seed Missouri in St. Louis. three-seed Virginia, like you mentioned, Kenton, we thought they might even get a two, but they get the three.
Starting point is 00:07:26 They're going to take on 14-seed right state. And then eight-seed versus nine-seed. You've got eight-seed Clemson against nine-seed Iowa. So you've got West, Midwest, and South region being represented on Friday there. And here's a fact, Kent, and you know me. I already looked at the odds for all of these games, of course. Of course. Including the first four games, two of them, and then the six first round games that are locked in.
Starting point is 00:07:55 I like this. Seven out of the eight ACC teams are favored to win their opening game. The only one who's a very slight underdog, I want to say point in a half, was Clemson against Iowa. But seven out of eight are favored to win their games. I mean, listen, obviously upsets happen in March Madness. That's why our brackets get busted. time of your first week. But I mean, wouldn't it be great if seven or all eight of our teams get through the opening, the opening day of the tournament? Oh, absolutely. Absolutely. And Donald,
Starting point is 00:08:29 when you look at this, this is a great indicator of the success that the ACC has had this season and the type of teams that we have. And I do remember another conference saying, well, why not let Vegas decide who gets in? You know, well, looks like Vegas believes that the ACC has a lot of quality, basketball teams a whole lot of oh man this is probably going to go to ac cc's way so the the reality is it's it's not a whole bunch of something that these teams are favorite it's more of something that they got in it's more of something that like now we're sitting here looking at a point where it's like all right it's time for these teams to show and prove it's time for these teams to make it happen and and go win some ball games because you were given the chance there have been teams from the
Starting point is 00:09:15 first four to advance to the final four. You know, Will Way was on that coach of staff as well over at VCU. SMU, you saw that you got a shot with the way their guards play. You got a shot. You caught some teams slipping, having a bad night, the way that they can score the ball, you've got a shot. Miami, it's a home game for them. The chips have been against Miami all year in terms of basketball.
Starting point is 00:09:38 Nobody has believed in or respected this team. Everybody was waiting on the other shoot-a-drop all year. They said, oh, yeah, they had some success. early. This will, this won't last. This will fade. Oh, yes, it's coming down to the tight top four seed race. They'll fizzle out. And yet, they
Starting point is 00:09:55 continued to battle. They continued to fight. They continued to play good ball. UVA, to me, y'all got as big of a gripe as anybody as anybody. Now, granted, that three seed that you got may make your path a little easier, depending on who you ask.
Starting point is 00:10:11 But, I still think it's a lot of disrespecting that, because, you cannot name much hotter teams in America other than Duke. You can't name too many teams that you're like, hey, I feel comfortable with my team matched up against UVA right now. Who in the country would feel very comfortable with that at the moment? It's a team I would not want to play. In fact, you can almost say like they were almost in some ways late in the regular season.
Starting point is 00:10:40 They were like right behind Duke in terms of how hot they were. Hello? And Brownell. Everybody said you can't win the big one. Everybody's disrespect you. Your team is the only ACC team that is not favor. You better take that to heart. You better take that to heart.
Starting point is 00:10:58 And I'll even be generous. I'm going to do the Lord's work today. It gives some motivation to the dirty. I'm at the University of North Carolina. Hubert Davis, they talk about you like you was a one-hit wonder. They talk about you like you're a flop without Roy Williams players. They're pretending, oh, yeah, Caleb's down. therefore you got another left.
Starting point is 00:11:16 What are you going to do about? What are you going to do about? There is, I'm telling you right now, the ACC has as good of an opportunity as anybody, as anybody to make it happen. But this has to be the entire conference locking in and playing great ball. There's only two to three teams that you mentioned
Starting point is 00:11:39 that I think if they play a mid-game and their opponent plays their best game, they're still going to win that ballgame. I think Duke beat Sienna, regardless of what happens. Duke's keys to the game, get off the bus, get on the court, dude, be yourselves, right? Half Cameron Booze are on your roster. That's it.
Starting point is 00:11:55 That's the key. I think SMU against Miami of Ohio, just show up. Just show up. I think that you're that much better than that team. Just show up. And you'll get everything that you want. And Virginia as well, because of their sheer size alone, I'm like, hey, first round, y'all probably going to take it either way you cut or slice it.
Starting point is 00:12:18 But everybody else, shit, you better bring it. You better bring it or else we're going to be looking at some early exits from the ACC. You know, when we come back, I want to talk a little bit about Duke's possible path because, listen, the Blue Devils should fear no one, but they did land in a very difficult region. I want to take a look at the bracket when we come back. You want to keep it locked right here. started on this brand new episode of Lockdown ACC. Folks, college basketball is nonstop. Big games,

If Duke is going to get to the final four, you know,
Starting point is 00:15:51 they're going to have to obviously beat Sienna to open things up, which, you know, should be a warm-up match. They're favored by almost 30 points. And then you have to face the winner of Ohio State TCU, which won't be easy. You'd have to face probably either Kansas or St. John's in the Sweet 16 and then, you know, maybe Yukon or hopefully for the ACC's sake, Louisville in the Alita hate. So, I mean, it's not going to be a cakewalk for the number one overall seed if they're going to get to the final four. No, but if you're looking at that side of the bracket, you're also looking at a situation
Starting point is 00:16:30 where, I mean, like you said, Duke's fear no one. They have advantages over all of those teams. Just know, you're not coming out of that unscathed. You're not coming out of that without, you know, a team nicking you or. or having a close game there because the reality is Hurley's crew is going to have something to say about that obviously at Yukon. You know, we know the coach that he is, multiple-time national champion and all the things that he brings.
Starting point is 00:16:54 And even if you're looking at Michigan State and Izzo being in that bracket, now, if Jeremy Fierce doesn't try to trip anybody and get itself suspended again, they might actually, you know, be a formidable opponent. And Louisville is a team that I'm telling you when Mikel Brown gets hot. We talk about, oh, guard play, guard play, guard play. That's what wins in March. Guard play wins in March. You name me 10 better guards than Mikel right now in America.
Starting point is 00:17:21 Oh, I can't. No way. Exactly. So these teams all, they all are coming forward and they've all got a shot. That is probably the toughest overall region that I've seen so far. So do you think the east, is it tougher than the south? Because I think the south is the other region. that gives the east to run, where you've got Florida as the number one seed there,
Starting point is 00:17:46 really good Houston team as the two seed and they're playing close to home there in Houston. Illinois is the three seed, Nebraska, Vanderbilt is the four and the five. I think from a Miami point of view, even though I hate playing Missou in St. Louis to open up the tournament, I would still rather be away from the east and the southeast in either the west or the Midwest. Do you think the South gives the East a run? I think they give them a run for their money, but I think ultimately you end up coming short because of this reason. I see some big upsets coming out of the South.
Starting point is 00:18:23 I see some big upsets coming out of the South. I see a few teams that are rated a little bit too high, and they're catching teams, and I predicted this a couple years ago when I said, hey, that Oakland team wildly underseated, that Kentucky team does not like each other. Watch out for that game. And now all of a sudden, everybody's talking about Skokie, like he's the next Jimmer for Dead or something like that.
Starting point is 00:18:45 So I think that we could see a couple more upsets out of the South than we're going to see in the East. And I think that's what makes it a much tougher gig because I think the top seas are going to be very tall in that region. I think there's going to be some teams that you expect to dominate that first round or two, they're going to look flat out dominant over their opponents. Yeah. And there are two ACC teams in that very, difficult south region. North Carolina is the sixth seed.
Starting point is 00:19:13 They'll open up against VCU. And that's also where Clemson is, eight-seat Clemson against number nine, Iowa, with Clemson being the only ACC team that is a slight underdog in their opening game. You know, I mentioned Miami over in the West region opening up against Missouri. So Arizona is the number one seed over there in the West region. and then in the Midwest region is where you're going to find. I guess that that's where.
Starting point is 00:19:49 Which one? Is NC State, is that where NC State gets in if they win their playing their first four? Yeah, NC State is playing, hold on. NC State is playing BYU if they advance here. So they would also be in the same region as Miami. Oh, that's right. Okay, cool. Yeah. Yeah. So that's what we're looking at from an ACC point of view. So hopefully, hopefully going to be a good tournament coming up. Now, you know, the NIT will not have Florida
Starting point is 00:20:22 state in it despite a bid. Here's why they declined it. You want to keep it locked right here. We're not done yet on this brand new episode of locked on ACC. I talk all things Miami on Locked on Cains. All right. So, obviously, a season of some big ups and downs for Florida State basketball, ultimately, and not surprisingly, they miss out on the NCAA tournament. Even though, hey, in the ACC tournament, they had the Blue Devils on the freaking ropes.
Starting point is 00:23:03 They had an opportunity to buzzer beater. They lost by one to Duke. And then so Kenton, the headlines start coming out last night that Florida State, they received a bid to the NIT, and they turned it down. And tell me if I'm the only one here. When I saw the story about them turning down the NIT and the quote from head coach Luke Locke's, I thought someone was making a parody post with the same quote from Marcus Freeman when Notre Dame turned down the Pop-Tart bowl because the quote was almost identical. And then I start to see people from war chant posting. And I'm like, wait a second. You're telling me this was real?
Starting point is 00:23:43 So here's the quote from Luke Locke's on why Florida State turned down the NIT. We have tremendous respect for the national invitational tournament and the role it is played in college basketball for many years. When we were asked previously about the possibility of an NIT invitation, I meant it when I said Florida State would welcome the opportunity to compete. after our loss to Duke on Thursday night, I felt strongly that the players who carried this season, especially our seniors,
Starting point is 00:24:13 deserved a voice in that decision. This is where I felt like it was the Notre Dame thing all over again. After everything they invested this year, it was important for me that they had ownership of how this season concluded. Our team ultimately chose not to participate, and I respect that decision. This group battled through adversity, exceeded every expectation,
Starting point is 00:24:33 and played some of the best basketball in the country over the final month of the season. Their character, courage, and competitiveness were on full display in our one-point game against the nation's top-ranked team. While the result was heartbreaking, the fight and unity they showed in that moment is a powerful reflection of who they became as a team. For our seniors, that performance is a fitting final memory of a season defined by resilience, growth, and pride in wearing Florida State across your chest.
Starting point is 00:25:01 So you're telling me, KG, you've got, I was told six seniors on. that team and they all voted not to play again with any of their teammates with any of their brothers that we we have an opportunity and yeah it's not the big dance but we have an opportunity to play in the nit and it's meaningful if you win the nit there is no notable pride that comes out of that but we're just going to take our ball and go home we're never going to play with each other yet i thought that was very odd for them to choose to decline the nit what say you this is Luserville stuff, and when Luserville comes to town, it does not leave. It does not leave. I know that folks don't want to hear this, but you would think that they would take some lessons
Starting point is 00:25:47 from some of the other teams that we have seen. Notably, most notably, their football team that started a season, 13 and O, and then everybody in their mama opts out of that game, and Georgia doesn't have nearly the same amount of opt-outs, and Georgia destroyed that program. they have never been right since. You cannot let Luserville invade your locker room. And it's loser. And I know some people are going to say, well, Ken, do you want the players to play when they don't want to play?
Starting point is 00:26:19 Do you think players want to get up at 5 in the morning for workouts? Do you think coaches ask them their opinion on it? No. Because to be a champion, and this is something that my coach has taught me a very long time ago that stuck with me all my life. In order to raise the big trophies, in order to raise the championship trophy, in order to raise your hand and there's a ring on that finger,
Starting point is 00:26:49 you must first raise your standards. And this is not raising the standards by saying, hey, players, tell me, do y'all want to play? How do you feel about playing? You're under contract, buddy. This NIL deal, you're getting paid. Now, so take your tail on. We're going to play the NIT.
Starting point is 00:27:09 And here's the worst part of the Luserville stuff. We believe that our one point loss to Duke is a wonderful representation of our season. Ew! You want a loss to be the representation of your season? You're just like, I don't even want to play no more. I don't even want a shot to end it with a win. Ew! Oh, my God, get out of here.
Starting point is 00:27:31 It's embarrassing. It's foolish. and Notre Dame was fools to do it, and this team was fools to do it as well. Yeah, I'm glad you said it because, you know, it means more coming from you when I've got two Sebastian the Ibis bobbleheads behind me on my screen. So I had to get your opinion on that for a more, a more unfiltered, unbiased look. And I try not to be biased, but people don't take, you know, if I'm saying something negative about Florida State, people don't take me seriously.
Starting point is 00:27:58 You got the Keynes, you got the Canes Polo on. You got the green and orange light. shining down upon you. You know what I mean? I would say the same thing if it was NC State. And I mean that very genuinely, right? I don't care who it is or why. I don't care about that.
Starting point is 00:28:15 What I do care about is, hey, you need to play if you have the opportunity. And I could at least understand it if you got a bunch of NBA guys on your roster. Dono, name me two players on that team that you're like, oh, that guy,
Starting point is 00:28:31 I'd be shocked if he didn't have a five your career in NBA at minimum. No, I can't. One? Give me one. I can't. Oh, okay. All right.
Starting point is 00:28:41 So it seems to me, like, what are y'all, are you in that much of a rush to go learn Enterprise rental car? Are you in that much of a rush to go learn La Liga al-Belancesto? Are you, what is going on? Like, this is, again, it's foolishness to me, but more power to them. Yeah, well, we'll leave it at that. Of course, we'll be following the tournament all throughout the week from the first four to the final four and beyond. He is Kenton Gibbs from Lockdown Wolfpack.
Starting point is 00:29:12 Make sure you check him out at TGIF underscore Kenton. You can follow me at Alex Dono and on Locked on Cain's. And we'll talk to you tomorrow on another episode of Lockdowne ACC. We are part of the number one Lockdown Podcast Network, your team every day.
