Locked On ACC - Daily College Football & Basketball Podcast - SEC Commissioner Takes Jab At Florida State | Why Virginia Tech Can Win The ACC This Season
Episode Date: July 18, 2024SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey took a subtle jab at the Florida State Seminoles during SEC Media Days. During an appearance on Jacksonville’s 1010X radio, Sankey advocated for Georgia being one of the... top four teams in the country last season despite being snubbed from the playoff. He said, “Georgia was one of the best four teams (in the country) and didn’t get in (to the playoff), but you didn’t see us jumping up and down and complaining and hanging national championship banners,” said Sankey.Hosts Alex Donno and Kenton Gibbs reacted to Sankey’s remarks. The SEC Commissioner mentioned in a separate interview that the SEC is not in favor of further expansion and that the sixteen members say “We’re not going to take our pie and slice it into more pieces.” The guys preview Virginia Tech for the upcoming ACC football season. started on this episode. We are going to preview Virginia Tech, who is like a low-key under-the-rad
contender in the ACC. Obviously, there are teams that will be favored in front of them,
but do not sleep on the Hokies. Their obstacles toward an ACC championship, why they could
win it. But Kenton, I want to start here. So this is pretty interesting stuff coming
out of SEC Media Day.
So SEC Commissioner Greg Sanky was being interviewed on 1010XL radio in Jacksonville, Florida,
a big sports radio station.
And Jacksonville, Jacksonville is right by Georgia.
So there's a lot of, obviously, Florida fans there.
There's also some Georgia fans there.
And Commissioner Sanky was talking about Georgia not getting into the college football
playoff last year.
Obviously, Florida state fans, I believe rightfully, felt very snubbed by not getting in.
But, you know, Georgia, Georgia also feels like they were snubbed.
And Sankey said, quote, Georgia was one of the four best teams in the nation.
And they didn't get into the playoff, he said.
But you didn't see us jumping up and down and complaining and hanging national championship banners,
Sanky said.
So it's pretty oddly obvious.
Without coming out and saying it, the implication is, hey, at least our guys didn't react the way Florida State reacted.
Absolutely.
And you know what?
I think it's a lot easier to say that when it was settled on the field.
Now, again, this is one of those moments where I'm going flatly say that the way I feel about
Florida State personally has to go aside here because, again, I care for Florida State
a ton, but this isn't me being biased for Florida State.
This is an objective truth.
An objective truth is Florida State won every game that was put in front of them.
They beat everybody that was placed in front of them, period.
ifs, no ands, no buts about it.
Georgia did not do that.
That's an objective fact. That's not
what I think happened. That's not
what I want to happen. That's not how I
wanted it to go for Georgia. Georgia
objectively did not beat every
team that was in front of them. So they
left room for
the committee to have interpretation
of what they are, what they
are not, how good they are, how good
they are not. Florida still on the other
hand, did not. Because
I guarantee you, as sure,
as Sanky is talking
and all this and all that about, oh, no,
we reacted like big kids
and they were one of the four best,
but we held our heads high.
Yes, of course you held your headside
because you had not one,
but Texas as well as non-as-esteem.
So two of your member universities
who were going to be in it
were represented. Two.
So, of course, it's easy to say,
hey, I didn't, you know, we didn't hope about it.
We weren't sad about it as opposed to a university who there was no other representation.
There was nobody else there.
They did not get a shot because, again, if it was settled on the field, Florida State belong.
But if it was settled somewhere else, if it was settled through recruiting battles,
if it was settled through who rivals thought is the best team, who 24-7 thought is the best team,
who won three thought is the best team.
If it settled through who ESPN recruiting thought is the best team, then say that,
and let's leave it there.
But in the world where we play the games and let it happen,
there was teams that left wiggle room.
There were teams that did not.
Florida State is firmly on the did not side.
So Sankey, you know, and I'll now take it to the point of,
I talked about the past a little bit, let me talk about the future.
This reflects very poorly for Florida State.
Because one of the two viable options for you to get more money is poking fun at you.
after the other one
after one of the other
has said repeatedly all this week
they have screamed up and down to everybody who would listen
we don't want them
this is like when they say the worst
your crush can say is no
and she's like ew who is this weird
on this trying to talk to me
the worst she can say is not in fact no
it's not because the SEC
and Big Ten have been talking
out the side of their neck about Florida State
all week I feel bad for the folks
to tell I actually right now. Yeah, and that wasn't the only thing that Sanky said about Florida State. And it's funny because I'm watching all these Greg Sanky interviews and like, you know, some of these hosts are just like throwing out, hey, what do you think of Florida State? We're like, they should know he can't, he's got to be very careful for obvious tampering reasons. So I was watching this interview, uh, on next round live where they were talking with Sanky. And at first, the host like flat out asked him like, hey, what about adding Florida State? He's like,
I don't know what you're talking about.
Like he was very funny and coy with the way that he handled it.
And then they kind of rephrase the question about conference realignment and adding other teams.
And like, so Sanky, it's very clear, obviously that he's in constant communication with the 16 university presidents and chancellors within the SEC because he's their mouthpiece.
And he references like, you know, our our chancellors, he said do not want to be involved in any entanglements legally when it comes to re-execlments legally when it comes to re-
alignment. So I know that you could hear that and maybe the reaction is, well, hey, that means they
they could definitely be interested in Florida State. They just can't say it out loud. I guess maybe.
But then Sanky also said something, Kent, and this was the money quote of that interview on Next
Round Live. He said in talking to the 16 member institutions, now the SEC is up to 16 after adding
Oklahoma and Texas. He keeps saying how happy they are at 16. And he said, quote, they tell me, we're not
going to take our piece of the pie and slice it into more pieces because, yeah, the more members
you add, the more money every school has to split with somebody else. So it sounds to me like
Sanky. And then the other thing people bring up about the SEC. And I still think Florida
State and Clemson could very well end up in the Big Ten. I'm not ruling that out, despite all
this noise. But I definitely don't think it's going to be the SEC because another thing people
bring up is when it comes to the footprint of the conference, they're already in the state of
Florida, and they are already in the state of South Carolina.
So the Big Ten, the Big Ten would need these universal support if they really want to expand
their footprint coast to coast and expand their footprint into SEC territory.
The Big Ten needs these schools more than the SEC does.
And then Sanky says it right there, Kenton, something you and I have been saying for weeks,
you have to get these schools to agree to split up their piece of the pie to add another
member.
Yeah, this is tough.
This is honestly really tough.
it really, you know, because when you look at the other brands that the SEC added,
don't know, how many teams did the SEC add this offseason?
Two, right?
Yeah, Texas and Oklahoma, correct?
Two of the most historic brands in college sports,
besides the fact that they have been objectively,
mum, ma-ma-mid up until this last year,
with the exception to Oklahoma.
They won a ton with Cliff Kingsbury, sure.
but Texas has been very mid to the point where, you know, there was a lot made about a horns down signal and whatnot.
Like that's objectively.
And before Texas fans come in here, we know it wasn't actually about the horns down thing.
It was about another guy doing a chant that was similar and getting, you know, all types of hell about it.
Now, with that in mind, again, that conference just added two heavy hitters and they're like, y'all don't swing heavy enough.
you don't tip the scales enough for us to say value of cutting the pie versus the value of having them in the conference.
You don't tip the scales in the way that you think you do.
And so, again, the Big Ten has to do something.
Or else the Big 12 might back into getting two of the biggest brands in college sports at an extreme, at pennies on the dollar at this point, which would just be a sham and ashamed because at that point, that means that Clemson and the Florida State have potentially taken.
taking pay cuts for what?
In the words of Cardi B, what was the reason?
What was the reason?
Well, we got a lot more to talk about on this episode,
including the Attorney General in Florida
is flexing a big victory in this court battle
between Florida State and the ACC.
You want to keep it locked right here, my friends.
We're not done yet on this brand new episode of Locked on ACC.

Thank you so much for making Locked on ACC your first listen and your first watch today.
So, you know, Kenton, it's crazy how ACC teams and conference expansion have been topics already
at Big 12 media days. And I love how the Big 12 commissioner, he doesn't seem as concerned about
tampering as these other commissioners.
He'll talk about whatever, Brett, your mark.
But it's been a big topic at Big 12 media days, further expansion.
It's been a topic at SEC media days, even though Commissioner Sanky is shooting it down left
and right.
We've got Big Ten media days and, of course, ACC media days next week.
I cannot wait to hear how Tony Petiti of the Big Ten handles questions about this and how
Jim Phillips of the ACC was probably the most boring out of the four commissioners.
but I want to hear how he handles all this.
You know, I don't know what I had done in my past lives
or whose life I inflicted pain upon for this to be the first media days
in almost five or so years that I have not,
or that I won't be able to attend.
Very, very hurtful stuff there.
Because I want to see the look on Jim Phillips face.
I want to see the countenance of all these different head coaches
when talking about, hey, this is what's going on,
this is what's happening, this is what it is.
because this is we have so many dynamic things to talk about with so many of these these coaches
or these coaches and phillips especially dabo norville and phillips right yeah for norville
my brother and christ they're slapping around your brand on national tv and celebrating it they're
they're doing this for sport by the way no obligation to slap your brand upside the head they're just
doing it for kicks and giggles at this point. How does that make you feel? What's going on there?
And I get it. I get it. Some people say, oh, these conferences are going the extra mile and ensuring
that nobody sues them and did it, da, da, da, da, if that's the case, wouldn't the big 12 have to be
a little less committal in their thing? And also, I don't think people realize there's a difference
between legal jargon of, hey, I can't speak on that matter. You know what I mean? We're not,
we don't have anything to do with them. They're in the conference there in right now.
Once that changes, who knows, things could change.
And we don't want anybody else splitting up our pie.
It's hard for me to see somebody else.
Hey, it's not necessarily, you know, the juice isn't worth the squeeze in this regard.
What?
What?
Those are two very different things.
I have heard I have been watching football since I was before I could form fully coherent senses.
And I've been covering football since I had a firm hair line in waves.
You understand?
So with that in mind,
I need y'all to realize I've heard lawyer answers a million times.
I've heard legal answers a million times.
I know when the answer is committal.
And it seemed to me that the SEC is committal.
They're not coming here.
They don't have a place.
And if we do let them in, again, after saying they don't have a place,
it's going to be real tough.
It's going to be some begging, pleading on hands and needs to get in the conference.
Because if not, you've got to go the independent route
and trust that your brand is strong enough to command upwards of 40 million.
Yep, absolutely. So here's something else on the Florida State legal fight. So when I first saw this ex post by Florida Attorney General Ashley Moody, I got kind of excited, Kenton, because I'm like getting my popcorn ready. We're going to get some hard details. We might get some of the stuff that the ACC and the ESPN, that they, the ESPN, ACC and ESPN don't want us to know about because the attorney general of Florida tweeted out,
following action by my office, the ACC will produce secretive media contracts that are the heart of the legal battle between the conference and FSU.
This agreement is a win for the state of Florida, FSU, and transparency.
So I thought, oh, we're going to get some juicy details.
Then I come to find out she's basically just flexing for political reasons because we also get this from Pete NACOS of On Three Sports.
that here's the statement from the ACC, Kenton, on that note.
The ACC respects the public records laws of states where we have members.
However, as a private nonprofit association formed and operated by public and private universities from across the country,
we do not believe that our own records are subject to those laws.
Both parties, both parties being the ACC and FSU, while fully preserving their legal positions,
have reached a solution which will include the voluntary,
production of certain redacted documents by the ACC and the Attorney General then dismissing
its lawsuit. The ACC will not be providing any portions of documents containing trade secrets,
which has been its consistent position. So she's flexing about these secret documents coming out.
The actual documents that are coming out are going to be redacted. So I don't know, we're not really
getting anything, Kenton. This is all politics. You're muted. Thank you for letting me know that. This
is again, you know, big
ACC trying to shut me up here.
But anywho, this is the equivalent
of when, like, you're like,
oh, I'm going to play college football
25 all day. Like, I'm going to ignore all my
responsibilities. And your old lady's like,
I'm going to give you the silent treatment if you're going to play
NCAA all day. And it's like, oh,
no, anything but that.
Not space and nothing to do
while I play this video game
during which I wanted space
and nothing to do.
I mean, you and I have already talked about the possibility of a redacted copy coming out.
And I believe there was already a redacted copy that was.
Clemson already has one.
Florida State and the ACC agreed to produce one two weeks ago.
The Attorney General is just this week making it sound like she made this all happen.
Yeah, yeah.
Well, good for her.
You know, as the Southerners would say, God bless her heart.
But there's not really anything special here.
I would imagine any of the good stuff, all the good stuff is redacted, I'm sure.
Like, I mean, I'm sure any of the stuff where there may or may not be a smoking gun is probably in the redacted language.
Well, at this point, I think we can all agree there's no smoking gun.
Like at this point in all that we've seen, I think we can agree enough that there have been enough cases that have attempted to be dismissed to where these judges are out here saying, oh, there's something to this.
There's, you know, there's, there's some legitimacy to these contracts.
But, you know, I mean, hey, if she wants to flex for points, you know, in whatever regard, more power to her, you know, hey, have fun with it.
Be good and do.
I don't really know what else to say there because celebrating a victory of having something released that was already out.
You know, it's like me and you celebrating getting a copy of Free Willy on VHS.
I'm pretty sure.
I wish I had one of those.
I'm pretty sure that movie is, in fact, already out and already on VHS.
I'm pretty sure it's at a local thrift store.
Like, when we were kids, everybody had copies of that movie, so I'm sure there's a few floating around in thrift shots.
But you get my point.
At the end of the day, I mean, this is, it's a whole lot about nothing in the vein of Seinfeld.
Yeah.
No, absolutely.
Well, you know, something that's not a whole lot of nothing.
nothing, are those Virginia Tech Hokies.
Third year under Brent Pry, seven and six season last year, but they return almost all
of their talent.
Is it time for the Hokies to turn the corner?
You want to keep it locked right here on this brand new episode of Locked on ACC.
Thank you so much for making Locked on ACC your first listen today.
Make sure you check out Kenton and I are other shows for your second listen today.
Kenton does an awesome job co-hosting Locked on Wolfpack.
I host Locked on Cain.
So check those shows out.
We've had a roller coaster the last few days in recruiting on Locked on Cains and there's
always good stuff going on on Locked on Wolfpack.
So Kenton, first and foremost for the Hokies, you know, you talked yesterday in the context
of NC State.
I could say the same thing from Miami when we previewed them.
The schedule is definitely manageable.
Now, I actually think Virginia Tech's conference schedule might even look a little tougher
than NC State.
because they do have Clemson on the schedule,
which NC State didn't,
NC State didn't have Miami or Clemson on there.
Whereas Virginia Tech does,
they play a Friday night road game at Miami.
The prime time, I think,
could make that a little bit more interesting
because I know people always, you know,
they make the empty stadium jokes about Miami.
I know firsthand more people show up to night games,
so it'll be interesting to see what the turnout will be there.
So their conference schedule, let's go through it.
Miami's going to be their conference opener.
They're at Stanford, home against Boston College, home against Georgia Tech,
which is not going to be an easy game, at Syracuse, home against Clemson,
which will be tough, at Duke, and home against Virginia.
That is the ACC schedule for Virginia Tech this year, the out-of-conference schedule.
They go up against the SEC, but it's Vanderbilt.
They play at Vanderbilt to open up the season.
They play against Marshall, they play at Old Dominion, and they play at home against Rutgers.
So how do you feel about that schedule first and foremost for the Hokies?
The schedule is very favorable for the Hokies.
Objectively speaking, the schedule works out in a way that even if we're talking,
hey, just how do things line up, just how do things shake out?
You're playing some of the better teams in the conference on the road,
but you're playing some of the softer road environments with,
all due respect. That's, and that's, that's not to knock anybody or say anything. You know about
Miami, Donna. You and I both know, I mean? Like, even when Miami is rolling, is that environment
raucous and terrible and like, oh, my God, this is, you know, it's just not part there.
Well, here's the, there are, there are times when it is. And so if Miami is four and oh,
including a victory against Florida, by the time they face Virginia Tech for a night game,
it will be rocking.
If Miami's two and two,
it will not be rocking.
But here's the other part about that,
even if it is a rockist environment,
you know what generally does a fairly good job
in negating that?
A senior experienced veteran team.
This team is old as dirt, okay?
This team, we got a few guys
who got families to feed.
They got, you know, mortgages and AARP cards on the way.
All right.
Now, with that being,
said, I very seriously mean this.
This schedule works out very well because outside of Miami, what other tough
road conference game do you see here?
What other road conference game do you see where they won't be the favorite if
everything holds as is right now?
Yeah.
I mean, I guess it could go.
I wouldn't completely rule out Syracuse, but they'd probably be favored even at
Syracuse, I would say.
So that's one, potentially one other game.
So in all fairness, the schedule is very favorable.
know what you're thinking, well, that's just the away games.
The home games have got to be tough.
At home, you've got clenjing.
Very tough game there.
Who else do you look at on their schedule?
And you're just like, oh, man, that's a world beater right there.
That's a team.
You have Georgia Tech.
Exactly.
You have Georgia Tech who could surprise you on Homecoming.
And then other than them, I mean, obviously the robbery against UVA is like, hey, all
bets are off.
But even still, I mean, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I,
I struggle to say, hey, I think UVA has the horses in the stable.
And I don't think Elliot's the guy for that job.
I just, with all due respect, I don't, I don't know what he does well enough to say this justifies saying like, I believe in him as a head coach.
I just don't.
So with that in mind, I think that the answer is fairly clear here.
You know, they have a very easy schedule, very favorable schedule in terms of how things look.
you know, we're speaking of today July 19th or July 18th, rather.
Yeah, you know, Virginia Tech, they found their quarterback a few weeks into the season last year.
So this is not even a full season of work for Chiron drones who really exploded onto the scene for them.
They were relying more on their on their running game, their non-quarterback running game before he took over and drones through the air.
58.2% completions, 2,84 passing.
yards. The TD to interception ratio was excellent. 17 touchdowns, just three interceptions
thrown last year. And Drones is, he's an excellent dual threat, Kenton. It's not just the
passing you have to worry about with him. 166 carries for 818 yards and five rushing touchdowns
last year. Had he played the full season, he probably would have broken the thousand
yard rushing mark is the kind of season that he had last year. So Virginia Tech is absolutely
more dangerous now than they were heading into last year.
I don't think people understand how good Chiron Drones is because you look at the record overall and you see 7 and 6 and you say to yourself, how good are they really?
How good can they possibly be at 7 and 6?
Donno, I'm going to read something out to you that most people don't realize about Chiron drones in this team.
they started off last year with a whopping record of one and three okay now with that in mind i know
you're thinking well what does that have to do with anything right they had to play against the
mighty mighty in the just the environments that nobody wants to face of course these are the top
10 teams in terms of uh crowd noise on ncaa ruckers and marshal
Okay, why is that important?
Thank you for asking.
Well, against Marshall and Rutgers and Purdue,
they did not break 20 points once in those three games.
One time.
The team went one and three before Kyron Jones took over as the full-time starter.
After Kai Ron Droz took over as a full-time starter,
and hell, after he got comfortable,
you're looking at a record that shows this young man,
man, I mean, the only game that you can say, it was clear, hey, we're outmatched.
We don't have nothing for them. Louisville.
Every other game, either they won, they dominated or they were close, including a Florida
State game that was much closer than the scorecard reads.
It really was.
If you watched that game, it was much closer than that final score read.
And so if you're talking about a team that, you know, we're no longer playing this game now.
And I'm going to say it.
They learned their lesson, even though.
pride wasn't the head coach
last time. They learned their
lesson playing around with these dynamic
dual threat quarterbacks.
First, it was Hendon Hooker
who they said, you know
what, give me Braxton Burmeister.
And we saw how that worked out.
Not only did he get his head coach fired,
he was out of football while Hendon was going on
to be a Heisman candidate.
They learned from the mistakes of their
past, and they said, all right, Kyron's our guy.
We're putting all legs in that basket.
whoever the hell don't like it, go hop in the port.
We'll see you when we see.
And I think that him plus a running back in Byshaal, Tutin,
that's electric every time he touches the ball,
plus a receiving cord that again,
most of these guys, most of the top guys from last year are back.
They've only gotten older, bigger, stronger, faster,
on top of a defense that, you know, they're swarming.
They're a swarming, extremely active defense.
This could definitely spell out a potential.
surprise appearance and possibly even a win, depending on how things break in Charlotte for the
Hokies. So what about the obstacles? Because it could be something defensively for them,
Kenton. And I know that they did bring in a couple of defensive tackles in the portal.
Now, Virginia Tech was excellent against the pass last year. A lot of that had to do with teams
being able to run on them without much difficulty, but they were fourth in the country in
fewest passing yards allowed last year at 160.
8.8 yards per game.
But are they big enough and stout enough on the defensive line?
Because remember, the ACC, it's going to be a good running conference this year.
NC State, excellent running game.
Clemson's going to rely a lot on the running game, North Carolina with Amari and Hampton,
Miami with Damien Martinez.
So can they hold up?
As the old adage goes, styles make fights.
Fighters don't make fights, right?
So this could be their Achilles Hill.
The fact that their style of defense, this extremely swarming, this, you know, everybody's moving all the time.
We're always slanting.
They're going some way.
It could be very deeply exposed by some teams that who would you, whose hands would you rather have a ball in?
Max Johnson or Mariana.
Whose hands would you rather have the ball in, whoever's going to be their starting quarterback or Jadenoff?
Whose hands would you rather have the ball in for a bunch of teams in this conference?
overall, you're going to look around and say, you know what, give me the running back time after time after time again.
K-Clubnick or Phil Mafa.
You know, this is a very, very simple, very simple outline here.
This team has to find a way to stop the run.
You talk about Miami.
I mean, Cam Ward and Fletcher and Martinez, they can give it to you any way you want it.
But again, I feel real comfortable if you tell me all three of them going to run the ball all day.
long. They have to find their way to be more stout against the run. They operate on the
situation where it looks like they play the run on the way to the quarterback. And the problem with
that is if you don't have big enough guys to hold their hold the line where they're supposed
to be to not only penetrate up field, but disrupt. So the difference between the two,
penetration means you're just flying up field, right? You can fly up field and disrupt the running
back's course. But if you don't have another disruptor or other guys who are where they're supposed
to be as well. I mean, hey, good job or making the running back bounce or cut back, but
somebody's got to clean that up. And objectively speaking, they just weren't able to do that
last year. So the question for this team is simple. Front seven, have you been eating enough?
Have you had enough steaks in pizza and what gun club and wake room in the offseason?
Because I am guaranteeing you if Virginia Tech returned. I'm not asking them to bring back
to Bud Foster years of old defenses.
But if they can be a, I'd say, top 50, top 40 to 50 team against the run nationally,
I think they'll be in a very good position to get to Charlotte.
But that's a very big if.
It's like saying, Kawhi Leonard is a great player if he's healthy.
That's a huge if.
It's a huge if at this point.
Well, and for anyone who does want to take a flyer on Virginia Tech to win the ACC,
that's what you want to do.
You can get good value there because they're plus 18.
to win the conference. So $100
bet would win you $1,800 back if they win it.
They are behind SMU at plus 1,700,
NC State plus 1,300, Louisville plus 500,
Miami plus 450, Florida State,
and Clemson are both at plus 280.
So you can get a nice return on your wager,
if Virginia Tech were to pull it off.
