Another ACC football power ranking has Miami on top, but we need to talk about where they have Virginia.
You are Locked on ACC, your daily podcast on the Atlantic Coast Conference.
Part of the Locked on Podcast Network, your team every day.
He is Kenton Gibbs from Lockdown Wolfpack.
I am Alex Dono from Locked on Cains, and this episode of Lockdown ACCC is brought to you by Fanduel.
The biggest stage in world soccer is here.
let there be goals on Fandual. Visit Fanduil.com to get started right now.
On this loaded episode, the legal fight between Texas Tech and the rest of the world,
essentially, has become a little bit messier today because the Texas Attorney General
is making their thoughts known.
And I think Braden Sorsby is going to play the 2026 football season.
We'll get to that.
But Kenton, there's a new ACC football power ranking that just hit the white.
wire today, courtesy of on three sports.
So the top two, and we'll talk about them in a second, should not be too surprising.
They have Miami with all their depth and all their talent at number one.
They've got SMU at number two, which I think is where most power rankings have them.
But then I look to number three, Kenton, and some of the other power rankings we've looked
at have had Louisville at number three in a lot of places, even Virginia Tech at number three in some
places. This one has Virginia at number three. And here's what they say about Virginia. The
quarterback competition between former Missouri starter Bo Probula and former Pittsburgh starter,
Eli Holstein, will last into preseason camp, but whoever wins the job will play behind
an old, deep, offensive line that returns three starters. Monroe Will's and McElland Thomas
are expected to start the season. We're expected to start the season, but we're lost to
injuries. They're back and healthy. That group should help Tennessee transfer Peyton Lewis rack up
some rushing yards. The defense that allowed only 19.6 points per game returns mostly intact.
Linebacker Cam Robinson is returning from a torn ACL suffered in November. If he can get back
to 100 percent, the Cavalier should be quite stingy. And obviously, Virginia had a great season.
They got to the ACC championship game last year, Kenton. So can they find lightning in the
bottle twice and be a top three team in the conference?
Donno, can they find lightning in a bottle twice?
It's a very interesting phrasing of that question.
Because we all know they say lightning doesn't do what, Donno.
It doesn't strike in the same place twice, they say.
Doesn't strike in the same place twice.
I don't know if that's true, though, but it sounds good.
Okay, but hear me out.
Hear me out.
There are a myriad of reasons that I'm very concerned about UVA,
despite the fact that their offensive line is deep and is very experienced.
I do expect for their offensive reduction to be better than what people are believing,
but there's two problems.
Number one, last year, defensive deficiencies were the Achilles Hill of this team for large chunks of the season.
Nobody said UVA and Tony Elliott couldn't put up points.
It was them getting stops that at times was the problem.
But even beyond that, Chandler Morris, while not,
not being perfect, was a gamer, was a guy that he kept you in good positions,
position to win per se.
Chandler Morris came in to UVA off of a 3,700-yard, 31 touchdown, 12 interception season.
Okay.
Bro per bulla is coming in off 1941, 11 touchdowns to nine interceptions.
Yeah, not great.
Eli Holstein, who he's in competition with,
was benched for a true freshman in Mason Hinchel.
I think that if Tony Elliott repeats and does what they do
or does what they did last year or this year,
at that point, all of us, including me,
I'll be the first person to on air say,
hey, every knee must bow, every tongue must confess.
When it comes to UVA football, Tony Elliott is the best.
Because there's not, there, when you look,
at this roster, you're replacing a ton out wide.
You're replacing a ton in terms of your running backs.
You're replacing your starting quarterback.
Your defense, you're saying, oh, guys who didn't play it all last year,
if they're back in 100% this year, it'll be, they'll be stingy.
Huh?
That normally ain't how that works.
So I'm, I will be the first to say I'm extremely skeptical of UVA at number three.
But if they do, if they do get there, at that point,
UVA, give Tony Elliott the lifetime contract.
I don't care what you're seeing play out at Florida State.
You are not Florida State.
Give him a lifetime contract and let him figure it out from there if he puts together another nine, 10 wins.
Hell, even eight wins, extend them, maybe not lifetime, but nine or 10, back to back, 10 win seasons with Virginia football.
Life them, immediate.
You know, I wouldn't have UVA much farther down than three, but I wouldn't have them at three.
I would have Louisville at three.
You know, I know that they've had problems kind of finishing out a full season consistently.
But I believe in what Jeff Brom has built there.
I certainly believe in Isaac Brown.
And after, you know, kind of seeing and hearing the reports of how Lincoln Keenholz,
how well he's doing there, the new transfer quarterback,
it makes me a little more confident that Louisville can be a top three team in the conference.
necessarily, you know, behind SMU.
I think there's a reason why Miami is in front on paper,
but the games are played on grass.
But I would have Louisville either number two or number three on paper.
Is that how you would do it or would you keep SMU where they are at two?
I would keep SMU at two.
And, you know, when you talk about Louisville at three,
I think I understand the logic and the reasoning because when you get to three
through about six or seven, all of the teams have arguments for them and against them, right?
it's not fair for me to criticize Bo Pervula and say his,
his,
uh,
you know,
his time at Missouri didn't show me much.
Well,
what the hell is Lincoln Kingho show me,
right?
Like that's,
he was always behind somebody.
Yeah,
he was behind,
uh,
exactly,
uh,
exactly.
So I have to be fair in that regard.
However,
coach Brom has shown a history,
a pattern of these one year rehab jobs,
guys who were dead in the water,
their career was over.
Nobody wanted them.
they were on the island of Miss Fit Toys.
And Bra'll say, hey, come here, man.
Come here, come here.
We go.
I may not be able to make you an NFL quarterback,
but I may be able to make you third team all conference, perhaps.
I will be able to make you a quarterback that's going to an ACC championship,
perhaps, Jack Plummer.
So you look at this and I'm saying that I'm speaking on the history
because the best predictor of future behaviors is the past.
And if we see, again,
I'm fully acknowledging, Virginia at three is not ridiculous because, again, about three through seven, they're interchangeable in that range where you're like, all right, Clems has always got the top end talent.
But the bottom end, what are you going to do there?
What are you going to do?
Now that the depth ain't depth in like you used to depth and you can't keep guys from getting in the portal or you can't develop guys in the way that you used to.
So there's always that part of it to where every team in that range has something to be set against them.
I don't think it's ridiculous, even though I disagree.
I disagree.
I personally will put Louisville at three because, again, big Isaac Brown guy here.
Big Isaac Brown guy.
I believe that in 2026, there are very few running backs that can carry in offense.
He's one of them.
He's one of them.
I think he's one of those few guys that, hey, if we go as far as he'll take us, he'll take us pretty far.
But in that same token, I understand the question about quarterback, which would have them a bit lower.
Clemson, same thing.
You expect Gideon to take us.
step forward and be really good, get that running game together.
You expect their offense to now get back in the beat that we've seen in the past with
their former offensive coordinator, you know, go from talking Chandler Morris's old team
to Chad Morris now being back in town and what he was with Davo for many, many years.
But again, there's still a quarterback competition and one of those guys been on campus for
three years.
So, you know, there's arguments for and against all of these teams in that three, four,
five, six, seven range.
But it's, it's tough to say, it's tough to say any of them deserve it.
I'm just not sure that I would go with Louisville and even Cal and JKS.
What they're doing with Tosh LaPoy, you look up, you look up and you say, hey, they have
consistently produced good defensive backs.
Can they get the rest of the team to come along with them now?
Can we get some consistency in this team?
Can their depth finally be at a point where they're suffering?
serviceable. You don't need Cal's
death to be the stuff of legend.
Just don't get killed when you
start to see those injuries appear at the end of the season
and you'll be all right. So all of these teams
have a claim. All of them have something against them.
Would I agree with Louisville at 3?
Yes. Am I?
Oh, this is a travesty of all travesties.
And these guys don't know what the hell they're talking
about putting UVA at 3.
No, not at all.
Yeah, and you're right about uncertainty
a quarterback for Clemson as well.
And that's why, so they have Clemson at number
five. And like I that that seems about right to me. It wouldn't shock me if they do better than fifth
in the ACC. It also wouldn't shock me if they do worse. Exactly. Because like the intel and we'll
see because the season will tell us the truth good or bad, but the intel out of spring that we have seems
to be a little stronger for Keenholz at Louisville than it is for Visina and the other quarterbacks
competing there at Clemson. But so the top five Miami one SMU, Virginia, three, Louisville,
for Clemson number five is how they have it.
We'll talk about the rest, including Kenton made a good shout for Cal.
What do we do with them?
I want to know if Kenton feels like they ranked his NC State Wolfpack a little too low.
And how do we feel about the bottom three?
You want to keep it locked right here.

Thank you for making Lockdown ACC, your first listen.
All right.
So on the on three power ranking, Kenton, after the top five of Miami, SMU, Virginia, Louisville, Clemson, Duke comes in at number six.
Virginia Tech comes in at number seven.
You know, I don't know if Duke is possibly ranked way too high, Kenton.
I mean, if this was still the Duke of Mensa and Barcate,
I think I would have them in the top three or four,
but the Duke of Walker Eaget, not so sure about.
Not only the Duke of Walker Eaget,
this team lost a ton of talent defensively as well.
What are we, what Duke, I get it.
in the ACC championship game last year due to some really interesting things happening with the tiebreaker.
Duke got to prove me wrong again.
They've got to prove me wrong again.
I can't hold Virginia to you've got to show me back to back without holding Duke to that same standard.
And I know some Duke fans are going to say, but Ken, we've been whooping behind since Mike Elko was here.
It's a different coach, different regime, the clock reset.
Because trust me, if Dave Doran was to go from NC State and they hire another coach in his first two seasons are 10-win seasons,
what I'm going to say. This is the new normal for NC State now, I guess. This is who we are now to
playoff contender, NC State. This is us, despite the fact that Doran, I was part of his first
recruiting class. That's how long he's been there. So I would say Duke has to show me a little bit
more for me to fully believe in Mani Diaz to this level. Not to say that they've shown me nothing,
not to say I don't believe at all. They just got to show me a little bit more for me to be
fully bought in there.
That was a team. And listen, Mentsa was not perfect there.
Obviously, he had a couple high turnover games like the game against Illinois.
But, I mean, that offense carried that team last year.
Like I know Manny Diaz is a defensive mastermind, but the defense was not up to snuff
last year.
They were carried by an offense where Darian Mentsa threw for almost 4,000 yards,
34 touchdowns, and six interceptions.
And now you're replacing him.
him with a very unknown commodity from a smaller level of college football.
I have my big concerns on that one.
That's all.
I'm fully in concert with you on that.
So I mentioned Virginia Tech 7.
They've got Cal at number 8.
How do you feel about those two?
Makes sense.
Now, the one thing I will say, James Franklin bringing down a lot of talent from Penn State to Virginia Tech,
everybody's very excited about that.
Very good recruiting class, right?
You're looking at a recruiting class.
that we talked about LaPoy kicking it on the recruiting trail
and kicking folks backs in.
I mean, that's what Drainne's Franklin does,
especially in the area which he now resides.
That's his bread and butter.
It's great to see that people are believing in him so early.
I don't know how well he can make those early returns manifest.
I'm not sure.
I'd be a liar if I said I'm a thousand percent sure.
He's going to have everything rolling in the way it needs to roll in year one.
I'm not exactly sold on that.
Yeah. And then they have after Cal at number eight, Wake Forest at nine, NC State at 10, and then Pittsburgh and Georgia Tech 11 and 12. I don't know. I feel like both of them are way too low on that list. And maybe NC State at 10 as well. Go ahead.
How are these rankings done? What are they done based upon? Don't get me wrong. I am well aware of the.
defensive deficiencies of NC State.
Very well aware of that.
Not going to ignore that at all.
How do you put them behind the Wake Forest team that they beat Handily last year?
Yeah.
And if you look at the two teams,
Wake Forest didn't seem to improve that much,
and their schedule is going to be much tougher this year,
as opposed to NC State,
who I don't think that they got worse in any market way,
and their schedule appears to be much easier
by things that are completely out of their control.
As we've talked about on there many a time,
NC State is slotted to play two teams
that probably will not have head coaches
to close out the year.
Oh, yeah.
They only have, I want to say,
two road games where they're going to a state
that is not either a school in North Carolina
or a state that neighbors them,
like direct neighbor,
like their state touches North Carolina type deal.
Yeah. So, you know,
No, it's a little bit foolish there.
In Georgia Tech, I like Key a lot.
I believe in Key a lot.
He's shown me a lot in his time.
As I've said, two years is my bar for where I'm like, all right, this is starting to be who you are.
However, I get the idea of no proven quarterback.
I'm not sure I can put you up here without seeing that you're a guy who can turn
quarterbacks from the pumpkin into the chariot.
I get that.
I fully understand that.
But then how do you how the hell do you put Duke at six?
Yeah.
And no, and this, this was, I guess, direct your complaints to Andy Staples,
who I think does a really good job.
That's who made the list for on three.
But I just don't see what universe you would have Duke six spots higher than Georgia Tech.
That doesn't compute for me.
I agree.
I agree.
And Duke being right outside the top five is confusing for me because what are they bringing that you're saying,
hey, these dudes, I know it.
I wouldn't be shocked to see them back in the ACC championship.
Everybody named Mama would be shocked to see Duke in ACC.
Duke football would be shocked to see Duke in the ACC championship next year.
So, again, I don't really understand it.
And this ain't just about NC State because, I mean, Pitt, I get it.
Their talent.
If you play good football at Pitt, you're probably moving on to another place very quickly,
which is disappointing.
It's disappointing to see all of these big-time dudes moving on from Pitt.
But that's kind of where they are right now.
You know, I think Hyshal is good.
I really do.
I like him a lot.
I'm not sure how many games he can save you virtually by himself.
Not sure.
So, you know, but Wake Forest and Diccard, I'm very interested to see what happens there.
Very interested to see year two, how do you follow it up?
Because, again, we've said this a thousand times and people still don't believe us.
quietest nine-win season in the history of the Power 4 conference.
Nobody's ever had this type of season and everybody's just like, they still suck.
They're still terrible.
Don't tell me none about it.
So I'm interested to see what the encore of that opening act was for him.
But again, these are way too early preseason rankings.
These are fall campaign even started yet.
And everybody's flexing, looking good in front of the mirror in the best shape of their
lives ranking. So we'll see how it comes out to watch the end of the season. Yeah, sure.
All right. So the next, let me give you the bottom five here. Florida State at number 13.
I think that's about right, given their situation there. Syracuse 14th, North Carolina,
15, Stanford 16, and Boston College at the bottom, which I think I do agree with Boston
college dead last because I don't feel like they care about football and it's sad like I feel so bad
for our colleague AJ Black who I think cares a lot more about Boston College sports than BC's
athletic director and university president do like maybe they should let AJ run the programs I
don't know what's going on there well if AJ could balance a budget of three packs of gum and
two of the leftover bandanas from their bandana game then I'm sure that he can
can make something happen.
But in all seriousness,
what is BC doing right now?
How do you bring your coach back?
And that's the thing, Dono.
When I think of a team coasting,
when you think of coasting,
normally I think of a guy in the front.
If I think of a guy coasting.
Yeah, you're right.
Coasting was not a good word.
Can I say treading water?
Is that a better phrase?
But you know what, Donno?
I think that as as oxymoronic as it seems,
as much of a misnomer as it seems,
they are coasting in last place.
They're just chilling.
they're just, hey man, it's all right.
Come have some cofilta fish.
Come, come and enjoy some of our Boston baked beans, man.
We don't have to worry about the outcome.
Let's just have fun on chestnut.
Do they have a budget for the lobster roll?
I don't think they do have that.
I don't think they do.
I don't think they do, Donald,
because I'm sure their recruiting would look a little better
if they were giving out lobster rolls than what it looks right now.
But I'm genuinely concerned because they're taking down the cashed ACC.
That's how bad they're right now.
They're single-handedly dragging our public perception down
because every time people talk about,
oh, the ACC's terrible, the first team they say,
look at Boston College.
Look at Boston College.
And they're just sorry.
They're just sorry.
They need to get it together.
North Carolina, they're going to be serious after this probably,
but right now they're going through their unserious phase
where, you know, they're going through their midlife crisis
where you buy that motorcycle and get that Mohawk,
just because it's like, dude, you're 48.
What are you doing?
Stop that.
Stop.
By the way, Dono, this is not advice to you to get a Mohawk or a motorcycle.
Oh, my Mohawk days are over.
I couldn't.
How do I do a Mohawk when there's nothing on top?
Exactly, exactly.
You took the top off the Mayback.
Ain't no point in going back now.
So this is where North Carolina is right now.
I'm not surprised by that.
Stanford, on the other hand, they're trying.
They're really trying to win.
They put the money in.
they put the investment in.
I would not be surprised.
Of the bottom three, Stanford is the one I'd be least surprised to see make a jump out of that tier.
If I saw either one of the bills make a jump out of that tier,
as much as it pains my heart to do, I'd have to salute them.
I'd have to say, job well done, sir.
You have made something.
You've made a chicken sandwich out of chicken scratch, brother, and I've got to applaud you for it.
All right. So when we come back, for any schools that we're talking about boycotting Texas Tech or even like schools in their conference, the Big 12 that have talked about boycotting Texas Tech, you will be hearing from the state attorney general of the Lone Star State. You want to keep it locked right here. We're not done yet on this brand new episode of Locked on ACC. We're certainly not done with Fandual. The biggest stage in world soccer is here.

Thank you for making Locked on ACC, your first listen, Alex Donno alongside Kenton Gibbs.
All right.
So Kenton, the Big 12 board was, I think they were planning on discussing how do they internally discipline Texas Tech for, you know, pretty blatantly violating NCAA rules.
Now, they did get that injunction from a Texas judge, but they're really trying to insist on Brendan Sorsby playing this year.
despite the Texas Tech starting quarterback, having been exposed as a compulsive gambler,
including betting on games that his teams played in in the past, including unders on passing yards and unders on points scored,
which is pretty alarming.
This was a statement from Big 12 Commissioner Brett Yourmark today.
He said, shortly before the start of today's Big 12 executive board meeting,
the conference received a letter from the Texas Attorney General's office,
notifying the conference of potential legal action from Texas Tech if the conference pursues
certain actions under its bylaws. So note, your mark wanted to say, hey, we're only going to do
things that are in our bylaws, yet they're threatening legal action. I think that's an important
part of the statement. He says, we are taking time with our legal counsel to understand the
concerns of the state and we'll meet again with the full board next week. Quote, we move forward
with our executive board today in preparation for our full board meeting on Monday.
We had a good and informative discussion.
Sentiment among the executive board was no different from what we heard from the ADs earlier
this week.
And I think that's hinting at the sentiment still being very angry against Texas Tech.
Our discussion with the full board will determine our course of action and all options
remain on the table, Your Mark said.
So it sounds to me, Kenton, like, Your Mark's still, and I'm sure he takes his cues from
the university presidents.
works for them, right? The Big 12
Commissioner. But it sounds like they
definitely want to sanction Texas
Tech in some way, but now that
the big guns of the state attorney general
are coming out, you need to make sure
you find a very careful plan.
See, here's the thing.
From your mark
and the Big 12 side of this,
I completely understand.
From the Texas Tech side of this,
I'm tired.
I'm so tired. I'm
worn down. I'm worn down.
I'm worn down by all these people pretending like there is no way to support this young man's rehabilitation from his gambling addiction, which 9,000 bets, 9,000 bets.
That's a serious problem.
But to pretend that there is no way to support him outside of, let him play the game, which is a privilege to play, which him playing would then call into question the integrity of the entire deal.
to do that is like, what are we doing, man?
What are we doing?
And here's a word, friendly word of advice to the folks of Texas Tech in all the life, right?
You got the attorney, the AG on your side, you know, you got the bigwigs in Texas on your side.
Yeah.
Shut up.
Get from in front of those cameras.
Do not answer any questions revolve.
around how you feel with anything to do with gambling, anything to do with swordsy.
Have you seen the one from Joey McGuire? It's like he didn't murder anybody.
Let him play. It's not like he killed somebody. And that's my point exactly. You got your guy
already. He's back. The injunction is filed. Dono, when's that next court date again?
February 8th. When is Texas Tech's last?
college football game in terms of regular season?
Oh, I mean, last weekend and November.
Last weekend in November.
If they were to make a deep playoff run, I think January 15th is the final,
final game of the season.
That's the championship.
If they were to get that far.
So just so we're all clear here, if they run the table,
if they go undefeated, if they play every single game,
hell, they don't run the table and they got to play an extra game because they don't
get a by week.
Yeah.
Their season is over at latest mid-January, and the case does not start until mid-February.
So the time-lapse season, I don't know, Dono.
It smells a lot to me like you won.
And sometimes when you won, you just go sit down and take your win.
You don't care how it came.
You don't have to defend it.
you don't have to, well, y'all just don't want to compete with us.
No, nobody wants to compete with Gambers.
Yeah, that's a crazy argument.
Like Cody Campbell, the booster was like, well, they just, they don't want to compete with us.
So, I mean, did Oregon get the memo when they beat you 23-0-0 in the playoffs last year?
You didn't score a single point.
They're afraid to compete with you, everybody.
Dono, what was the first year to play off?
Of like the 14-14.
14-14.
Oh, was it 20-14?
So there have been over a decade worth of playoffs, correct?
Yeah, over, yeah.
Every single listener of Locked on ACC,
congratulations.
You have scored enough points for the rest of the NCAA
to not want to compete with you.
Because guess what?
You scored just as many as Texas Tech.
And apparently everybody is so overwhelmingly terrified
of the team that scored zero
in their one playoff appearance
in an expanded playoff might I add.
Yeah.
In an expanded playoff.
You know who scored more playoff points than Texas Tech?
Michigan State.
And we are all so scared,
Tulane that scored more points.
JMU has scored more points.
But everybody's so scared.
Oh.
we tremble at the thought of the mighty raiders coming with their guns up.
Oh, God. I'm quivering just thinking about it.
In reality, people don't want to compete with those who show.
Not only will we not follow the rules, but we're going to gaslight you about it after us.
Because again, you could just say, hey, the judge said he's eligible.
Next question.
Yeah, that's a great point.
Like the judge says he can play.
We're going to support him, you know.
We don't have to say.
We don't have to keep feigning.
This is the only way.
He's an 18-year-old who made one mistake.
Well, one mistake was signing up for the app.
Okay.
He made that, hold on.
He made that one mistake over 9,000 times.
Hello.
That's what I was just about to say.
That's what I was just about to say.
He made the one mistake of making that out.
And then he made the 9,000 mistakes of making the best.
But Dono, don't forget.
Don't forget on top of the 9,000 one mistakes from the account and the bet.
he then had to send money out of state for a few thousand of those bets or a few hundred at least while he was in Texas.
Yep.
So again, this is not a one time.
Oh, yeah, I did one thing.
Oh, nobody.
This, again, just take your win and go on.
You've got your mark in a blender right now.
He doesn't know what to do.
The rest of the big 12 teams don't know what to do.
I doubt the NCAA tournament for any sport or the college football players.
off is going to know what to do with y'all so sometimes you just take your victory and you just look
around and say oh well i watch the sunset on a grateful universe that we've got our boy eligible
nobody's grateful does not matter i did not say that publicly i said that to me and my boys privately
in raider nation y'all be easy that's that's the easy answer but for whatever reason these guys
got to keep going.
We could not take care of a poor 20-something.
He's so young.
He's a baby, Donald.
He's a baby.
He's only 20-something.
Who 9,000 times compulsively gamble.
He's got a problem.
He's got a problem.
And that problem can't be fixed unless he's the one throwing that nine route in front of 50,000 fans.
There's no other solution, Donald.
And that's why gambling addiction is so crippling.
because everybody else, you know, that number that they give you the call at the end of the,
the Ben-MGM and the Fandul and all those.
1-800 admit it?
It doesn't work unless you're the person throwing that perfect RPO glance, Rob.
If you're not the person doing that, it's not going to work.
So I'm sorry, though, suffering from addiction of the gambling variety,
unless you're going to go out and watch people throw tortillas in the air before you,
you, you know, handoff on an option read for a touchdown.
There's no hope for you.
There's no hope.
You're getting me teared up here.
That's this very, very passionate.
I mean, I wanted to get the best possible therapy.
And in fact, they should put like bonus bets in his account.
So you can, that's the best way to face it.
You know, they say you're never supposed to go card.
Head on.
They say you're never supposed to go cold turkey.
So let's weed them off with bonus bets.
Yeah.
Bonus bets to start weaning them off.
