drop for the upcoming
EA sports college football game.
Where did the ACC team stack up or are we just dwarfed by the SEC and the Big Ten as we usually are?
But Kent, I mean, you couldn't have scripted this any more bizarre.
You know, we've talked a lot on Locked on ACC in recent months about the House versus NCAA settlement.
And so literally, today is July 1st, which is the first day that revenue sharing comes into effect.
and for the first year, every Division I school has that salary cap, essentially.
It's not technically a salary cap, but it is a salary cap of about $20.5 million.
And it's going to be between the $20.5 to $22 million range varying a little bit over the next few years.
And yet we're already seeing now the plaintiffs in the House settlement, and we'll talk about this,
are demanding audits to make sure 20.5 is.
is enough. Like, are schools hiding money under the mattresses basically to keep from paying these
athletes more? You know, saying that it's not a salary cap is like saying, oh, yeah, we, we just
been dating for a few months, but she's not really my girlfriend. I mean, we go a lot of places.
I've been there plus one to a couple weddings, but that's my girlfriend. We just, we just see each other
time to time, and it just happened to be all the time, you know, as of the past few months. But no,
in all seriousness, this is a situation where, I mean, I, I,
I expected that there would be pushback.
I'm surprised by how quick it came.
I thought that we were at least going to get a couple years of the current iteration
before somebody looked up and said,
this isn't quite fair.
We are literally less than 24 full hours in.
That's how early this is.
Donald's talking about first day.
We are not past the 24-hour threshold.
And yet we already have schools like, I don't know, 20.5.
You know, we already got parties saying, are you hiding a little something under there?
Where is the rest of that money going?
So I'm very intrigued to see how this all shakes out if we'll see another round of lawsuits.
If we see the courts step in immediately and say, nope, we all agree to this.
We all agree to this.
Or if this will be the moment that finally gets coaches, players, administrators all to come to the table and say, all right, enough is enough.
y'all want to play ball we want a coach ball we want to administrate universities we don't want no
more nothing else do with the courts let's sit down and get a fully fleshed out uh you know
collective bargaining agreement going so that we don't have to do this every other day with
every other team it's just too much all right here are some of the facts uh from USA today here
on the the first day of revenue sharing while the NCAA has informed schools that they may provide
starting today, up to 20 and a half million in new benefits for athletes during the 25, 26 school year as part of the settlement against the association and the Power 5 conferences.
The plaintiff's lawyers say they are exercising their right to have the data used to arrive at that spending limit audited because they have questions about the figures.
If the audit finds that the cap should have been greater than 20.5 million, court intervention could.
could be involved. All of this may not affect schools this year, but it can impact them in the future.
A couple of important notes on this Kenton. If they do find that the cap is, I guess, objectively
not high enough, you know, an auditor and an arbitrator will determine that. If they find the cap
should be higher than that, an important note is that doesn't mean you have to spend more. Like,
it doesn't raise the floor. It just raises the limit, right? So you figure if the limit gets raised,
you know, the more money a school has and, you know, the bigger the TV deal is based on the
conference that you're in, it's going to give you at an advantage. With that said, though,
Kenton, I don't think the bigger schools even want to necessarily spend more than 20 and a half.
Like, you know, they'd probably say, all right, if I get that advantage, I guess I'll take it if I can now spend more.
But even like the Ohio states and the Alabama's and the Oregon's and the Miami's of the world are probably
not like, oh yes, I hope they raise this. It's the plaintiffs. It's the athletes who want this.
They want the option to be able to make more money. Yeah. And I understand why the players want this,
because you hear how NFL coaches talk about, hey, you've got to keep your star players happy.
Like, yes, everybody told the law, but you still got to keep your star players happy. Because
why? The players make more money than you. Well, if that number goes up to, let's say, 50,
let's say the number goes up to 4550 right you think that a jeremiah smith equivalent is not making more than
ryan day if the if the deal is 50 you think you know if we talk in miami terms a cam ward equivalent
is not making more than christobal if you're talking a a team a full team revenue sharing amount
or salary cap however whatever you want to call it you know that thing goes up to 40 to 50
you don't think that that Cam Ward equivalent coming out in a few years
would be a guy that makes more than him.
So now all of a sudden that changes the dynamic.
So I understand why the players want it.
I understand players saying, hey,
I think that y'all are hiding some ducats from us.
Even still, I think that this is a situation where it's at some point in time,
let's just play some more.
You know, I never want to take away from the players.
I never want to take away from their rights and them getting what they deserve.
And to be honest, I'm going to be fair all the way around.
here. I never want to take away from the universities and them putting out the best product
possible. These coaches and their legacy, I don't want to take away from anybody's stuff here.
But what I do want to see is, again, let's get to a table and let's sit down and let's
say, hey, this is what's fair. This is what's not. This is how we'll promote fairness to the
maximum. This is the ways that we will just have to accept that there are going to be the
halves and the have-nots. There are going to be the Johnsons and the McCoys.
There are going to be that thing where you've got, you know, hey, this is the revenue sharing cap.
NIL deals, we're completely hands off.
Everybody on your team gets whatever share of the revenue share that the school decides,
but NIL is a separate thing or whatever agreement they come to.
But at some point in time, I want to see a collective agreement because as long as there's no collective agreement,
there can always be a, well, I think that they're holding back money.
I think that there's holding back money from this school.
I think this school is holding back money.
I think my school is holding back money.
And now you can't have a class action lawsuit in terms of entire universities or the massive student, the players suing one entity.
It's now the players suing one school.
And now you've got one class action lawsuit fancy state.
Another one for UNC.
Another one for Miami.
Another one for the.
And it's just, it just gets out of hand.
So I would love to see a full, fully fleshed out reservation.
solution to this as soon as possible.
Yeah, I mean, like you said there, I don't even know how we do any of this stuff without
defining players as employees because they're still using the student athlete thing,
which is, you know, it's kind of a joke at this point.
They refuse to recognize them as employees and how you can do this stuff without
collective bargaining.
But when we come back, I want to talk about what the reality would be in college sports
if they do force that cap to be raised.
You want to keep it locked right here.
We're only getting started on this brand new episode of Locked on ACC.

Miami. We'll talk in a little bit about where Miami, NC State, Clemson, Florida State, so on,
where they rank in the upcoming EA Sports College football game. But more to say about this
house settlement before we get to that. So, you know, Kenton, once this audit is finished,
and it, like, it may ultimately determine that schools, you know, are maybe making more money
through their TV deals than they were trying to make you think that they can't afford to pay
out like a higher cap of revenue to players. Obviously, there's going to be some schools that may
just say, like, we're going to choose not to pay more because, again, that would be the cap,
not the floor. Like, they can't force you, but obviously the schools that want to get ahead in
recruiting an NIL or maybe going to take advantage of that. But even before this cap potentially
gets raised, we're already seeing some schools out there. Arkansas, which in the SEC, has been a notable
example that they've been laying off some employees in their athletic department in order to,
you know, use more money for revenue share. I can imagine it's happening at other school.
We're like, they're actually having to streamline the staff to prepare for revenue sharing.
You know, we've been hearing rumblings. I think it is happening at some smaller schools,
not at like the power four level to this point, but schools potentially cutting non-revenue
sports because the revenue sports, they subsidize the non-revenue sports.
sports, right? So the reality is going to be. And some people maybe won't care because maybe you only watch football and basketball anyway. But for those who are invested in, you know, other sports, especially a lot of women's sports, although I don't know, they probably wouldn't be able to cut, which is good, wouldn't be able to cut so many women's sports because of title nine, because I think title nine is still a thing, right? But, you know, if you're talking about cutting maybe your men's golf team and your men's wrestling team in order to, you know, to raise more revenue sharing money, like it's, it's, it's,
It's going to change the way that we consume college sports if there are less sports available to play.
I mean, yes.
And here's the thing.
It goes beyond just the country club sports of, you know, golf and badminton and all that stuff.
Tramp doesn't make any money.
You know, with all due respect, it does not make any money.
Nine times out of 10, of most women's basketball programs don't make any money.
But even if your belief is, well, Title IX is going to hold on to that.
Because if you have a men's basketball team,
you have to have women's okay that's fine but there's still a bunch of teams where a bunch of schools
where you're looking at teams that are going to get cut here and to me i i guess it's the double
edge sort of it all because i have always argued football players deserve every dime that they
make and and that these athletes put their bodies at extreme risk that with all the respect
to every other sport football presents a unique risk that the other sports do not
With all due respect to the rowing team, there is no such thing as chronic rowing
interfere or anything like that.
There just isn't.
DRE?
It just doesn't exist.
It just doesn't exist.
So I'm saying all of this to say, as unfair as it is and as rough as it is, it is one
of those situations where the young men that go out on that field, they are unique drivers
of a very unique economy.
That's just the reality.
Now, if we could turn back the hands of time
and say, hey, hey, hey, hey, we are going to keep this
a truly amateuristic endeavor.
Nobody's going to get paid.
Nobody's going to be a millionaire out of this.
No TV deals, no shoe deals, no nothing.
All of the concessions go directly to the universe
and all that.
But that ship sailed about, what, 60 years ago?
You know, before you were gleaming your father's eye down.
No, that ship sailed.
So we are now at a point where it's not fair.
It's not just per se, but it is very much so a situation where it's these guys are earning the money.
Men's basketball for some schools.
Same thing.
Those young men are earning the money.
They are the ones that bring the eyeballs in.
And if you as a fan are a fan of all these sports, it is your duty to do the due diligence, to watch them, to create the revenue.
for them. It's your job to watch college baseball outside of Omaha now if you want to see
college baseball go on. It's your job to watch the softball world six. It's your job to watch.
Go to the Raleigh Relays and all that type of stuff if you're in the area for the track level.
Go to all of those things and attend them, show up, watch it on TV, do all the things to pour
in revenue to it if you care about it. Because like Donald said, this is a time where it's not
just women's sports that are on the chopping block. Any sport that's not generating revenue.
You love wrestling? It's on the block.
You love golf?
It's on the block.
You love rifle, archery, bowling.
All of that is on the block.
And that's just the reality.
Yeah.
And then, of course, the reality, you know, for you and me covering the Atlantic Coast Conference,
obviously the ACC is in better position than most, right?
Like the cuts would affect the group of five before it were a group of six,
I guess it is now before it would affect the power four.
But then if, like, if they were to say, oh, by the way, it's not,
it's no longer a $20.5 million cap.
We, 28 million dollar cap now, a 30 million dollar cap.
That's going to hit the ACC and the Big 12 harder than it's going to hit the Big 10 and the SEC with their considerably larger television deals.
So, right, that the schools who would choose to spend more.
And again, it doesn't force you to spend more because they're not raising the floor.
They're raising the cap.
I keep having to remind myself and all of you about that.
But that if you're talking about, you know, the NIL needed to attract better players in recruiting and transfer portal, that would put the SEC in the Big Ten at a bigger advantage.
And it would theoretically widen that gap between the other conferences.
The only thing that is a saving grace for the ACC in terms of what, where is your advantage?
It is in that these players want to play.
That's the advantage.
That's where you can come in and say, okay, listen, you go over there.
and you get paid $3 million to ride the bench for three years,
you may not get any film in the NFL or you may not,
you're a five-star kid.
You go over there and you play with that stockpile of five-stars.
You are in a position where the NFL will never know who you are
until your senior year.
Is that something you want for yourself?
You come here, take a million-dollar pay cut in comparison to the highest offer,
but we have snaps immediately.
Cam Ward ain't walking through that door.
We need a quarterback.
Come on.
Talk to me.
CJ Bailey just graduated.
We need a new QB.
Come on.
Let me talk to you.
Let's have a conversation.
That's the kind of deal that you have to go there.
Because, again, in terms of finances, you're kind of cook.
Like, that's just the reality.
There is no fighting that.
There is no battling that.
Dono and I are always going to shoot you straight.
We're going to tell you what it is, what it ain't,
it could be and what it came. And right now, what it could be is finding alternative ways
to win those recruiting battles, finding alternative ways to win on the couch, saying, hey, man,
what do you want to go down to Georgia for, dude? Your granny is in North Carolina. You're from
North Carolina. You know, you want to stay home. That's a long car ride. I know, it'd be tough
on granted to get there, but you've got to get creative and find other ways. Because if you try to go
dollar for dollar, if you just go big on big in terms of the bag, the ACC is going to lose that battle,
I'm talking about 10, unless you're a Clemson, unless you're a Florida State.
In some situations of Miami, you're going to lose that deal.
Yeah.
And speaking of Clemson, Miami, Florida State, NC State, I'm laying eyes now on the EA sports
ratings for the upcoming college football game.
I didn't play it enough last year.
Like, I lost interest way too quickly, but I'm going to make a bigger effort this coming season.
Let's talk about where the top ACC football team stand compared to the rest.
You want to keep it locked right here.
We're not done yet on this brand new episode of Locked on ACC.
Make sure for your next listen, you check out the portal.
And honestly, I know that like some people say, oh, it's the off season.
Like that's when Brian Smith, host of the portal, that's when he shines.
I mean, Kenton, within the last like week and a half, Brian's been out there at the
rivals five-star camp, Under Armour Future 50.
He's got boots on the ground scouting these players.
He's talking recruiting.
He's talking NIS.
which is a big topic.
You get all of that on the portal,
which is hosted by our friend,
Brian Smith,
available free wherever you get your podcast
and free on YouTube,
The Portal,
like this show is part of the Locked-on Podcast Network,
your team every day.
All right.
So I'm looking,
Kenton at,
and honestly,
to just remind you people
what an old geezer I am,
I didn't even know that these rankings were out already.
Kenton had to,
like, you know,
more than a decade,
my junior,
had to point this out to me.
that we already have, you know, the first batch of rankings out.
So I'm looking at the top 10 to the EA college football game for this coming season.
Got Alabama at number one, which surprises me a little bit, I'll be honest.
Texas at second, Ohio State third.
I feel like they should be first.
Penn State, fourth, Notre Dame fifth.
Then you got Georgia at sixth.
And then you got Clemson at number seven.
Do you think Clemson?
I thought they'd be in the top five.
I didn't think Bamba would be at number one.
I thought Ohio State would be, but I thought Clemson would be in the top five.
Do you think Clemson is slightly disrespected being the first ACC team checking in at number seven?
I think they're big time disrespectful.
I mean, we all know that the game doesn't weigh each position evenly.
Like I've seen this firsthand.
The quarterback position is one of the most heavily weighted.
And of the six teams in front of them, how many teams have quarterbacks that are in the same stratosphere as Kay Clubman with all due respect?
The number one team.
People would say, they'd say Drew Aller.
I still don't get it.
People would say Drew Aller.
Here's the thing.
Even if we give you Drew Aller, Alabama's quarterback,
is he in the same category as a K. Clubnik?
Who did you say it was number two?
Number two is Texas with, I mean, Arch.
Arch is the golden boy.
He's played like eight snaps.
Oh, yeah.
That take against Louise Anamo Roe and really put me on edge.
Ohio State.
They've got a quarterback that had to play much because Will Howard was their guy.
So you're looking at, you know, same thing with Notre Dame.
Their quarterback hadn't played any meaningful football and car.
So you're looking at a situation where somehow despite having one of the best defensive line rooms,
despite having a very good defensive back room, despite having one of the best wide receiver rooms in the nation,
and one of the best quarterbacks in the nation, you're just not there with everybody else.
Very interesting to me.
All right.
So then, well, let's go through the next few.
we'll find the next ACC team in there.
Texas A&M at eight, Oregon at nine, LSU 10th.
They do have a big time quarterback in Garrett Nusspire.
Then Miami at 11.
Now, Miami, I would say, has a big time quarterback in Carson Beck.
And it's not surprising Miami coming in second because, you know,
most every publication would have Miami probably second behind Clemson in the ACC.
Yeah, and I think that this is fair for Miami.
I really do.
And I know that Miami fans,
some of them may be a little upset about that,
but I want you to think about this honestly, right?
Even if we take Donald's approach to Carson Beck and we say,
hey,
we know he's going to be the same guy he was last year and he was damn good last year.
Okay.
Even still, this team does have some question marks that need to be answered
at pivotal positions that would keep him outside the top chance.
But it's 140 teams in the nation, babes.
11th is great.
That means you are one of the best teams in the nation.
So Miami deserves the love and respect that they're getting here in the trenches.
Cristobal has built an absolute fort up there on both sides of the ball.
So, you know, I think that this is a well-deserved level.
Well, and the thing I would say to Miami's credit is they have a high ceiling.
Now, their issue has always been reaching their ceiling.
That's always an issue that has long predated Mario Cristobal.
But I would say with what you talked about, the trend.
branches. Miami's got probably outside of Clemson the highest floor in the ACC.
Because even if, even if some things go wrong for you in the skill positions, maybe,
maybe Carson Beck has some rust or, you know, God forbid is not fully recovered.
Everything, by the way, for everything I can tell Beck is fully recovered, it's just a matter
of him kind of getting back to form. But even if he's out of form, even if maybe the defensive
backs drop some interception, some breaks don't go your way, maybe the kicking game is not
as good as it was the last few years with Andy Borgalis,
based on their likely ability to dominate the line of scrimmage on both sides
against, you know, 90% of the teams that they face this year,
Miami's floor should be pretty high.
I think their floor is probably around eight wins,
which it's higher than probably most teams in the ACC.
And that's fair.
That's fair.
Big guys lead.
Big guys lead, period.
It doesn't matter, you know, how good your skill positions are.
I watched the Lions drive three receivers back to back to back in the top.
to and guess what it got, right?
Because you're, you build out your team from the inside out, not the other way around.
Yeah, no, no doubt.
All right, let's see next ACC team on there after Miami at number 11.
All right, so you got Florida, Texas Tech, Arizona State, Michigan, Ole Miss, Oklahoma, Indiana,
and you finally get SMU at number 19.
Are you, I'm not, I'm not, I'm not, I'm not, they may have this.
right. I mean, is there anybody like maybe a Louisville or maybe a Duke that you may have considered
putting in front of SMU or do you think they got that right with SMU who maybe should be
ranked higher than 19 if we're being honest? If I'm weighing quarterback play and quarterback continuity,
I see it. I see the vision. However, the other pieces outside of this, like I know Duke is in
the top 25 and we'll get to them a little bit later, but they have they have the pieces returning to
offensively. They're going to be a special unit with Manny Diaz coaching. They're going to be a special unit. I have no doubt in my mind about that. The question is, can Monsai and company get it done offensively, which makes sense for me to say, again, video game rankings, you're going to be behind because video games prioritize the quarterback more highly than they do other positions. And Kevin Jennings is one of the best areas. He is electric through the air on the ground. He can get it done any way you want it. How you want it? How do you feel? He's going to be.
going to give it to you and and you know so i i get him i get smu being there despite losing a number
of star players from last year well and and yeah and when you're and you play the video game a lot more
than i do but one of the things i'm sure you look for is playing with a fun quarterback who can also
run in the game it just makes the game more fun right like i i i can remember back in my day
when i had like the 2001 video game and i was playing with michael vick like he was so fun to play with
because of the mobility.
Yeah, so Kevin Jennings is going to be a fun guy to play with.
Absolutely.
And, you know, a big thing about this game, the past blocking mechanics,
defensive line and get home right away, which I support the visual.
I'm not too upset about that.
You know what I mean?
Let the boys, let the dogs, huh?
But you got to have you a quarterback that can escape or an offensive line that is elite.
And SMU gives you a little bit of both.
They really do have an offensive line that has proven themselves time and time again.
Brett Lashley has done it again with the recruiting rankings and the transfer
Portland and all that. And then, of course, Kevin Jennings is Kevin Jennings is Kevin Jennings.
Yeah. All right. So, and you mentioned Duke makes the top 25 of the EA ranking.
So after SMU at 19, you got Tennessee, Missouri, Auburn, and then Duke at 23rd.
And rounding out the top 25 is South Carolina and Illinois.
you again like I try to make an argument for Louisville but I think Louisville even like when the
AP poll comes out is going to be right around 25 maybe a little bit outside of it so they're
probably not wrong in that I guess but you know so so what we've got Clemson Miami SMU and
Duke as the four ACC teams who make their top 25 how do you feel about that and about Duke at
23rd I like Duke a lot at 23rd again defensively they're
returning a star-studded defensive backfield.
And if you can defend the pass in today's game, you'll be just fine.
You know, this is a reality where you look at this Duke team and say to yourself,
how have they strung together so many wins in these past couple seasons, despite
losing their quarterback, despite losing their head coach, despite going through it.
Now you're going to be looking at a third quarterback in three years because you went from
Riley Leonard to Malik Murphy, now to Mensah.
you are looking at a team that we're not talking Duke basketball here.
We're talking Duke football.
And they are physical.
They fly around.
They disguise their defenses at a very high level.
I like a lot about them.
In terms of the four teams being in terms of just having four,
I'm going to say this.
I like video games.
I think EA works hard at this somewhat.
Eh, it don't really matter.
Every year, every year we see a team that's in the top.
10 and everybody's three seasons opt in
that finishes the season underwent.
Why would we be surprised if it
happens again this year? Right?
Like, why would we be surprised to see
multiple teams? You and I are big, big,
Louisville guys in terms of like,
their ceiling is always up
there and so is their floor. They have
shown us in the past couple years. They've gone
to an ACC championship
and gave Florida State all they can handle
albeit with the third string quarterback,
but they gave Florida State all they can handle
in that game. So this is
a team, they have that winning pedigree.
They have been there.
They have knocked on the door.
Obviously, you'd like to see more stability at that quarterback position because it seems
to be a revolving door transfers.
But they're a team that they're going to be like the others receiving votes category
for week one.
So I'm not really too surprised about them being on the outside of top 25 in terms of
the game ratings.
Well, we appreciate everyone's time, as always.
Later this week, we are going to look for a Miami preview episode coming up.
And this, we're in July now.
We're in ACC kickoff month.
And I'm going to be, I don't think I'm going to catch the whole thing this year, Kent,
because again, I've spent all my money on my European trip.
I'm going to drive to Charlotte.
I'm going to sleep in my car, maybe.
And I'm going to go to the first couple days of the kickoff this year.
So we'll start breaking that down as well.
