It's going down tonight.
Are Caleb Love in Arizona about to shock Cooper Flagg and Duke?
You are Locked on ACC, your daily podcast on the Atlantic Coast Conference.
Part of the Locked On Podcast Network, your team every day.
We roll into Sweet 16 tonight.
Thank you so much to the everydayers for making Locked on ACC.
Your first listen and your first watch today.
We're available free wherever you get your podcast.
We're free on YouTube.
We're part of the Lockdown Podcast Network, your team every day.
He is Kenton Gibbs from Lockdown Wolfpack.
I am Alex Dono from Locked on Kane.
So Kenton, tonight, we're doing a preview and not a postgame show because I don't like staying up past 10 o'clock.
And they're playing at 9.39 p.m. tonight, Duke and Arizona in the Sweet 16.
I will stay up and watch it, but I'm not going to be in a state to talk about it afterwards.
We'll do that on tomorrow's episode.
but at least like with this matchup, Kenton,
we have the benefit of having seen these teams play
earlier, much earlier this season.
It was back on November 22nd.
Duke beat Arizona 69 to 55.
Now a lot of things can change between November and March.
So how much stock and value would you put in that previous meeting?
I would say a lot because Duke has only gotten better.
that's that's the unfortunate part you you beat you got beat by the worst version of them or not the
worst but yes a worst version of them you know it's like dan hurley said if you're going to get us
get us now get us now you better get us now and uh Arizona could not get them in this this team
I'm going to tell you like this here this team is terrifying for a multitude of reasons they're on
pace to be one of the best, if not the best outright in terms of net rating teams in NCAA
history, especially since they've been keeping track of that type of stuff. It is going to get
scary, crazy, scary, spooky and hilarious for Arizona here. And here's the thing. If I'm
wrong here, I'm okay with eating some pro because again, I don't see the path for Arizona to
win that ball game. I really and truly don't. You know, it was like what we
talked about on the squad, I can see a world where Caleb Love goes ballistic and Arizona still
loses. You know, it's the old meme of, oh, man, he hits a three to cut the lead to 20.
Like, it's that type of deal where I could easily see Duke dominating from start to finish here.
So, I mean, again, you talk about how much does the old matchup mean? I would say not that much,
but even still, I look back at it and I say,
this team wasn't as cohesive.
They weren't shooting at the same clip that they were.
Now, they were, it just seemed like defensively,
they weren't talking as much.
They weren't communicating as well.
And yet, you want me to believe that this outcome is going to be better for the opposition?
You said that they're going to shock the world.
Well, I feel like Duke's got some rubber, some plastic, some glass, some mica,
some ceramic, whatever insulates you from some shock.
I'll feel like they got that.
Yeah, and I think both of these teams are better than they were in November,
but I think that that transformation, it benefits Duke more because you think about
who these teams were in November, like Duke, one of the other younger teams in the country,
three true freshman starters in that game.
And that was three true freshman starters in late November, the early weeks of the season.
Like, I mean, Kenton, I would say now that we're down to the sweet 16, you're no longer
freshman in my opinion. Like you have you have done the walk over the hot coals to this point and like I don't
look at Cooper flag now and and con canipal and say oh these guys are freshmen. No, these guys at this point
are seasoned veterans. So I would say that that transformation benefits Duke more. And when you talk about
whether Caleb Love goes off or not, now that would that that would be the only potential path to
victory is if Love just really goes off while Duke has an off night. But it's worth.
Noting Kenton, when these teams squared off the first time this year, Duke very much held Love in check.
Three for 13 shooting, eight points.
That's what Love produced.
Now, obviously, love has had very good days against Duke because let's not forget who he is,
former North Carolina Tar Heel.
This will be Caleb Love's 10th time facing the Duke Blue Devils.
So not this version of Duke.
I mean, this will be his second time facing this, you know, 20, 25 incarnation.
but he's no stranger to going up against the Blue Devils,
but the last time they squared off,
Duke held him very much in check.
To me, here's why I say he could go off
and they still don't present much of a problem.
Everywhere that you look on this team,
you see players who have played together,
who have been together, right?
Jayden Bradley was one of the most sought-after point guards
in the portal when he was leaving Alabama.
Everybody knew, oh, if you need a distributor, go get Bradley,
go get Bradley.
Everybody was calling his phone.
I'm not going to lie to you.
What Pack Nation was a sad about potentially getting him, you know.
But he ended up at Arizona.
It is what it is.
He played with Caleb Love last year.
Did it help?
Did it help?
Did the power of friendship help?
I'm saying this because when you look at what this team has done overall,
when you look at who these teams are overall,
KJ Lewis, another one of their top scores.
Was that Arizona?
last year. Did it help? It's a lot like that, uh, the, the documentary where they were talking about,
um, all of the, they were talking about the Olympics and the French national team is like,
oh, we play together, we scrimmaged together. We do all these things together. And they come
together for six weeks, though, the U.S. team. And so, you know, we have the advantage there. And
Kevin Durrett, cavalierly says, that ain't going to help you when you got to guard stuff.
that ain't going to help you.
You could have all this power, French Avery, experience team.
Everybody's been here for another year.
We played together.
We've been through the fires together.
That ain't going to help you when you got to guard Cooper.
And then when you got to guard Kempah,
and then when you got to get a shot off over Malawatch,
it ain't going to help you.
I get it.
Duke's a little banged up.
One of their best interior defenders in Brown is down short.
I'm not worried.
I'm not worried.
Now, this is a tournament that has lacked serious upsets so far.
It's been pretty chalky into the Sweet 16.
But if Arizona were to pull this off tonight, it would be the biggest upset in the Sweet 16.
If they can do that, the Duke Blue Devils are nine and a half point favorites.
So my question will be, does Duke win this game by double digits?
Because I think they will.
I've got Duke by about 15 tonight, Ken.
I think Duke wins that covers.
And nine and a half is a big line.
For a Sweet 16, for a Sweet 16 that is chalky.
We're not looking at like, wait, St. Peter's upset three teams and now they're here?
No, no, no.
These are teams that people predicted or that the bracketologist or that the selection committee expected to be here.
I still don't see.
I will say this.
I will say this.
If Arizona's firing at their highest cliff and Duke has a very off night, I can see him keeping it within five.
Any other world? Any other world? I see this thing. Duke rolls handily. Because again, I just don't think that they have what it takes to match up man for man across the board with Duke. Duke is a bowling ball of butcher miles right now. Proctor is a secret of some sort. He's like the secret recipe to this whole thing.
You're a weapon at the very least. That's what I'm saying. And mind you, that's a guy that on any other team. He's probably your leading score.
He's probably going to leave him.
And he's the guy that's like, oh, this unsung guy is coming out of nowhere, knocking him down.
Well, good for him.
Listen, it's, this is, again, it's not, none of this is a shot at Arizona.
None of this is me saying that I think Arizona is the bad team.
This is instead me saying Duke right now is a juggernaut, and they're rolling down hill with some momentum.
Yeah, Tyrese Proctor against Baylor on the round of 32.
Seven for eight, not from the floor, from threes.
went seven for eight.
So, I mean, if he can, if he can go five for eight tonight,
they're probably going to be in good shape.
So, yeah, in the men's sweet 16, we only have Duke left from the ACC.
The women's sweet 16, though, Kenton, which we're going to see action tomorrow and the day after,
we're loaded up with the Atlantic Coast Conference, which is, you know, what we kind of would expect
from the men's side most years.
You got tomorrow, North Carolina, taking on Duke.
How about that one?
Guaranteed team to the elite eight.
Guaranteed.
At least one ACC team will make the elite eight.
Yeah, UNC Duke at 230.
Both of those teams play incredible defense.
Your NC State Wolfpack tomorrow night, two-seat NC State against three-seat LSU at 7.30 p.m.
And then on, what would that be Saturday the following day, you've got three-seed Notre Dame against TCU.
So you're looking at four teams left on the women's side.
and hopefully that matchup between Duke and North Carolina,
two teams that know each other very well is as epic as I think it can be.
Oh, absolutely.
And you know the funny fact or a fun fact about some of these matchups that you just mentioned,
TCU star players, Haley Van Litt.
Do you remember where she started her career?
Little old Louisville.
So, you know, this is, you talk about defense and all that,
and that is going to be important.
But for care of loss,
and I think getting out of transition is going to be the big.
thing for Carolina.
It's Ken Upsi get up speed, get it rolling.
She is their do everything player.
And she's kind of, she's the one that stirs the drink.
She's the on court coach.
Say that three times fast.
She's the on court coach.
She's the person that kind of gets people lined up where they need to be.
And she's also the spark plug for this team in many regards.
And as far as NC State and LSU, LSU got you early in the season, Westmore.
Everybody believes that you can't beat Moki.
Oh, that front court of LSU is too much.
And you just trotting out till the trigger.
Let me tell you something.
Those guards need to have a spectacular game,
but it's possible.
We have seen Zoe Brooks and Isaiah James go off.
We have seen Madison Hayes with her signature brand
of pit bull and defensive rebound.
We've seen Sinai Rivers take on other teams' best score and eliminate them.
So all of those games are going to be important.
And head of Hidalgo company.
didn't forget about y'all. I did not forget about
y'all. Don't y'all sleep on TCU.
They've got some size on you. But again,
they're another team that has a trio
of guards in Hannah Hidalgo, and Sonia
Citrone, and Olivia Miles
that can play with anybody.
And Coach Kob is one of the best at it.
So I would not be surprised if all of these teams
except the loser of Duke in North Carolina
advanced. I wouldn't be surprised,
but they all have very tall tasks in front of them.
in equal but different ways.
We got some football on this episode as well.
Friday night now belongs to the ACC.
It's a little gimmicky, but I think it's great.
And we also have updates on the spring games

All right.
So Kenton, Rhett Lashley, the head coach of SMU football, has announced that SMU
will not be holding a spring game.
Now, I am a big fan of spring games.
I think it's important for the fan base to offer that to them, to keep them engaged.
and it, you know, gives you an opportunity to maybe simulate some of the pageantry that comes from playing, you know, meaningful football when late August, September rolls around.
But with with Lashley canceling SMU spring game, Kenton, I don't love it, but I actually appreciate the fact that he's honest about it because so many of the coaches around the country that have canceled their spring games, it's become a big trend this year, have hid behind this idea that, okay, it's not our fault.
that we need to cancel our spring games.
It's all these other awful programs out there
who are going to tamper with our players
when they see them on TV.
It's not us, it's you.
We need to cancel our spring games due to tampering.
So from Rhett Lashley's point of view,
I was watching his press conference about it,
I at least appreciate his honesty
because he wasn't hiding behind the tampering thing.
He said, quote, spring games are interesting.
They're good for your fans,
but after that you don't get a lot out of it.
he said, we'd rather get another practice out of it, meaning another regular practice.
If we're going to get another scrimmage, it's different when it's private versus public.
He says there's more downside versus upside for it in terms of having a spring game.
So, I mean, SMU fans may not love to hear that, that they won't have an opportunity to go,
you know, watch their team play and meet their players.
But I am refreshed by Lashley's honesty, right?
It doesn't do a whole lot for us, he says, to have a spring game.
I, I too, am refreshed by the honesty, but there's something that everybody seems to be missing in their reaction to this.
NIL is here, right?
Players now have their cash tag and these QR codes on their jerseys, right?
Yeah, yeah.
People in certain programs, you have the players, you know, cash app handles or, you know,
and their social media handles on their backs.
Fan support is more crucial than ever,
and we are skipping over,
oh, this is just a thing for the fans like it's nothing.
Yeah.
These teams are asking, these coaches are begging.
Every coach that gets fired now uses the excuse.
I didn't have the NIL support.
I just didn't have the NIL support.
And everybody's version of whatever their NIL collective is,
whatever it is, is always saying,
hey, fans, give $5 if you got it.
Hey, fans, we're raffling off this thing.
Hey, fans, we're doing this thing.
And we're considering something for the fans as though it's ho-home.
We're considering something for the fans as if it's whole home.
And I get it.
I understand.
We are in a business of performance.
You don't want to waste a single practice.
You don't even want to raise a single rep.
That was my mentality.
Every single rep I do, I want to make the best that I can do it
because, you know, it puts you in a better position
the next time you have to do it.
If you may be struggling with this thing and you just keep trying your hardest
and you hit that moment where you're like, I understand it.
Okay, my elbow needs to be up on my spit move.
I got it after rep number 112.
It just took some time.
Cool.
I get that.
But what I don't get is, again,
this complete disregard of the people that you're asking to support.
your programs. That's a darn good point. I couldn't have said that any better.
It's again, I have argued from the beginning. Yes, the spring game is for the fans,
but that's enough argument. That's enough argument, period. If you're going to ask the fans
to do more than put your butt in the seats in this economy, if I'm going to ask you to give
some money, I'm going to do everything I can for you. And if you're going to have a meet the Mustang's
day. We're going to have a spring game right after Meet the Mustang's Day. We're going to do
pictures of all that. That's just my opinion. But again, I will concede that you are correct,
that that type of honesty and saying, hey, it has nothing to do with the portal. We're not
afraid of people poaching our third string right guard. It's beautiful to hear that.
You made such a good point about that. And it's why I feel the fan interaction is so important.
Clemson, Clemson's going to have a spring game, but Dabo explained how they're doing it differently.
So I'd like your take on this.
So Clemson, they're going to have, I assume they do theirs at Death Valley because he was talking about getting 50,000 plus fans.
So they're still doing their spring game.
They're just not televising it.
So obviously from where I sit selfishly, because I'm probably not going to get out to South Carolina to watch in person.
I would like to be able to watch Clemson Spring Game on TV,
but at least Kenton, they're still doing it.
Like they're still having the event.
They're still going to have probably 50,000 plus there.
It's not just, it's just not going to be available for the masses on TV or stream.
Yeah, and that's, and to me, that's what it's about.
If you don't want to televise it, if you don't want to do all this stuff, that's fine.
But again, your fans are your lifeline more now than ever.
And I know a lot of people, the argument and pushback is going to be the reality is it's a few big
boosters and like the fans chip in somewhat but the the big boosters are are the main thing sure
fine whatever i'm sure the big boosters have all access and they'll be around for all these things
but again just your fan base in general just your fan base in general right i can i will speak to
what i know directly when there was a push to get will wade hired the one pack in io which is the
collective at nc state collected hundreds of thousands of dollars and more memberships may
ever had in like that sort of a span of time ever.
So I'm not saying that like, hey, that's going to be the difference between winning a
national championship and not.
But $200,000, $100,000 ain't nothing to scoff at.
Right.
That may not be enough to get you a Cam Ward or a Nico eye outright, but that may help
you get over the pump.
That may, hey, we're close.
We need a little bit more.
And then you find out, oh.
It is John and Jane, every man and every woman, every person that's helping us pay for this thing.
So I applaud Clemson on the way that they're doing.
If you're so worried about poaching, fine, close it off to everybody,
but your fans, whatever, let that thing rock.
But to get rid of it all together in the name of we need one more practice in February,
in March, that one extra practice is going to be the difference.
It's like, come on, man.
Let's not.
Oh, they're going to come.
for our backup kicker, Don.
You know, our backup kicker.
Nobody knows he can hit from 45 except us.
We're the only ones.
And if we play this spring game, everybody going to see.
Well, when we come back, the ACC wants to own a certain night of the week during football season.
We'll explain why this is a good thing and it's an opportunity.
You want to keep it locked right here.
We're not done yet on locked on ACC.

You know, Kenton, last year during football season,
you noticed a lot more ACC teams in action on Friday nights.
The ACC is bringing it up another notch this year.
they're going to have 12 games this season on Friday nights involving ACC teams.
And I notice when the ACC put out their press release, very clear message they want to send.
You know, they're like the Don Draper, you know, Mad Men.
They're trying to put it out there subliminally.
But I see what they're trying to do.
They said the ACC football to own Friday nights this fall.
Now, Kenton, we've talked so much about, you know, fall.
behind the power to the Big Ten and the SEC
and ways the ACC needs to get creative in marketing themselves
to try to really hold on to a niche and capture new viewers.
And listen, obviously, college football is synonymous with Saturdays
and it always will be.
But when you're competing every Saturday with the coverage
that goes into these big SEC matchups and Big Ten matchups,
to be able to carve out your niche and get more eyes on you on Friday nights,
I think it's really smart.
I think it's creative and I hope it's as rewarding as I think it can be.
I totally agree.
We have talked time and time again about Phillips needs to be more creative.
He needs to be more innovative.
He needs to have that showman, that sales and all these types of things.
And so this is one of those measures.
Like it is not, is it perfect from him?
Is this one of those moments where I'm like, he's absolved now.
Jim Phillips is now the world's greatest showman.
No.
But this is one of those things where it's like,
If you strategically know Saturdays are cooked, you will not have the biggest games.
You will not have the, you know, your college game, they won't be as often at your location,
and all that type of stuff.
If you know that and you know the biggest matchments that people want to watch are going to be elsewhere,
what are your other options?
You need to look at those seriously, take stock and say, all right, what can we do?
And so if you're going to lean into Fridays, it's like, hey, we're going to have some great college football on too.
You're finished watching your son's high school football games.
Come on over.
Come on over.
We'll be right here.
You know, hey, your boys' team stinks.
They're off the playoffs anyway, okay?
They barely made the city playoffs.
You know they wouldn't make a stake.
Come on over.
Come watch us.
Come watch a game out here.
I think it's a great idea.
Let's go through the Friday matchups.
Some of these are much more compelling than others.
They're not all blockbusters.
So the first Friday night, they're actually going to be two ACC-involved games,
August 29th.
Georgia Tech at Colorado.
I love that one.
Coach Prime against Coach Key.
And obviously Colorado is going to be the one that probably draws, you know, more eyes to the set.
I acknowledge that.
But, you know, Georgia Tech, darn good football team last year.
I think they can be again this year.
They probably underachieved a little bit last year just based on, you know, how well they played,
you know, beating Miami, taking Georgia to eight overtimes on that same Friday night.
I'll probably pay a little less attention to Kennesaw State at Wake Forest,
but both of those games are happening on that same opening Friday.
Hey, I just hope everybody has fun in that Kennesaw State and Wake Forest game.
But in all seriousness, that's a big time matchup in terms of, you know, Georgia Tech and Colorado.
I mean, you've got one of the biggest brands of football going up against one of the most exciting coaches
in college football in terms of Brett Key.
So, you know, I'm excited to see what happens there because, again,
That's a tough, hard-nosed physical team.
And generally, people have said that Dion seems a little soft up the middle defensively.
So we'll see how it works out.
Let's go through the next several Fridays.
So on September 5th, you'll have James Madison at Louisville, September 12th, Colgate at Syracuse.
September, that's one of the few easy games Syracuse potentially has this year.
Other than that, their schedule is a murderous row this season.
September 26th, Florida State at Virginia, October 17th.
You have Louisville at Miami and North Carolina at Cal.
I would imagine that's probably going to be a double header with the game at Cal
probably being like the 1015, 1030.
ACC after dark, baby.
ACC after dark.
You love that.
Moving on, you've got October 24th, Cal at Virginia Tech, October 31st,
North Carolina at Syracuse, November 14th, Clemson at Louisville.
That's a big one.
Remember what happened last year in that game.
November 21st, Florida State at NC State.
There you go, KG.
And then November 28th on a Friday night, Georgia at Georgia Tech.
Maybe we'll get another eight overtimes in that one.
Please don't.
Please, send us home early, okay?
Send us home.
Georgia Tech, didn't stop that early.
But I'll tell you what, that is a really good slate of games for the most part.
Like after you get past by week before, you're seeing all games that will either be competitive, most likely, or they'll have big implications in the ACC.
So I honestly and truly look at that.
And I said, this is good ball, man.
This is really good stuff by the ACC here again.
I am never going to lie and be unrealistic about the ACC and say, oh, yeah, we can take them on on Saturdays.
The ACC network just has to be a little bit better.
We just need Eric McLean and the E.J. Manuel to be just a little.
a bit better and that's the different. No, no, I'm not going to say that. But what I will say is,
again, this is the type of effort and innovation that we like to see where if you know you're
behind the A ball, you've got to do something to get up from behind. Don't just sit there on your
hands and say, oh, we lost. This over. So unfortunate. Hey, I think the Friday nights are a good way
to get it. Yeah, and having meaningful Friday night games, a couple other reasons why I love it.
Number one, like if your team is playing in a Friday night game, it doesn't screw
up your week as much as a Thursday nighter.
Because like the Saturday to Thursday turnaround is like it's quick enough that it can
kind of throw up your prep, throw out, I can kind of mess up your prep, I should say.
The Friday night game, not so much.
And then also Kenton having good Friday night games, like once the NFL season gets
started and you've got, you know, the all the extra Sunday, Monday and Thursday NFL games,
you pretty much have every day of the week covered, right?
I mean, maybe Wednesdays, Tuesdays, sometimes you don't have fun.
football, but every other day of the week.
You forget about matching.
What is that Wednesday nights?
Yeah, I think maxing is Wednesdays.
Yeah.
So it's only Tuesday then that we don't have much going on.
Yeah, not too long, not too much longer.
The NFL has anything to say about it.
But you're absolutely right.
You know what I mean?
A lot of days are very good football are ahead here.
And again, the ACC is being created.
At the end of the day, that's what we ask for.
We cannot sit up here and complain once they give us what we've asked for.
We've asked, be creative.
find revenue, find ads, find some way to make yourself relevant, they're doing it.
I love it.
