This marks 10 years since the ACC has had a Heisman trophy winner.
Here's who can break that skin.
You are Locked-on ACCC, your daily podcast on the Atlantic Coast Conference.
Part of the Locked-On Podcast Network, your team every day.
Lamar Jackson in 2016 was the last time the ACC had a Heisman winner.
Before that, I think it was 2014, James Winston, so that wasn't a long drought.
Before that, it was Chris Wanky in 2000.
So the ACC has had some droughts before.
Thank you so much to the everydayers for making Lockdown ACC your first listen.
We're available free wherever you get your podcast.
We're free on YouTube.
We're part of the number one Lockdown Podcast Network, your team every day.
He is Kent and Gibbs, former NC State defensive linemen and co-host of Lockdown Wolfpack.
I am Alex Dono, host of Locked on Cains.
And today's episode is brought to you by Mazda.
We put the same drive into every detail.
Wins define the moment, putting in the work that defines you.
Stay tuned for highlights in this week's moving the game forward.
There's more to a Mazda because there's more to you.
Now, Kenton, there are a few possibilities from the ACC
that intrigue me as possible Heisman Trophy hopefuls.
Not surprisingly, the odds makers at Fanduel have like the most likely guy from the ACC
who's got the seventh best odds is Darian Mensa, now the quarterback at Miami.
So we'll start with him.
He's got weapons.
He comes off an almost 4,000-yard season last year at Duke.
Do you think Mensa has a good chance of at least being in New York in December?
Oh, absolutely.
When you think about what the Heisman has historically been,
it's been the quarterback on the best team in America for the most part.
That is, by and large, one of the easiest pass.
When you look at all of the worst Heisman winners in college football history,
that for the most part, they all have that in common quarterback for the best team.
Miami has a shot to be the best team.
He will, in fact, be the quarterback of what has the shot to be the best team.
So he does have that.
But also, he has what I like to refer to as superpowers.
You know, like when you talk about quarterbacks and what makes him special,
really this is for any position, but quarterback more than any other,
because quarterback is the most visible position, he has superpowers where there's very easily
highlight or clippable moments from him where you're like.
Ah, that was the moment.
Ah, he shook off two defenders,
finds Tony on the deep post, and boom.
That's the moment that you look back at and say,
man, 60 yards in the air or 50 yards in the air.
That's a damn good ball.
That's an NFL ball.
That's a Heisman moment type of thing.
So I think that he has the ability physically to produce those
He has a supporting cast to produce those Heisman moments.
And he has a team that will have him in the Heisman moment type of situation.
There are a few different formats for the Hidesman.
And again, best quarterback or quarterback on the best team is the easy one.
You talk about the last Higman, we had Lamar Jackson.
Louisville was nowhere near the best team.
But Lamar Jackson was a freak show.
He was legitimately like the stuff that I do enrol to glory after I fully understand all the glitches in the game is what Lamar was doing in real life.
So, you know, I don't think anybody has that path this year, period, but especially not at the ACC.
Yeah, I mean, typically, and there are some outliers like, you know, Travis Hunter a couple of years ago, he's a two-way guy.
But typically you either want to be, like you said, the best quarterback on the best team or the quarterback of the best team like Fernando Mendoza was last year.
Or you want to be a quarterback who puts up video game numbers, right?
Which was what Lamar did.
And that's what Darien Metsa has an opportunity to do.
So, you know, statistically at this moment, he gives the ACC their best shot.
Let me give you the top Heisman odds, Kenton.
You're going to see some familiar faces here.
So the best odds to win it right now on Fan Duel, Notre Dame C.J. Carr at plus 800.
And then Arch Manning at plus 950.
I mean, I'm so tired.
What was the line in Mean Girls?
Like, stop trying to make fetch a thing.
Like stop trying to make Arch a thing.
But he's up there.
It feels like I'm in Bizarro world.
It feels like, it's like I, I feel like I'm in a soft padded room wearing a straight jacket
because I keep screaming at everybody.
Arch is not a good quarterback.
He's not a good quarterback.
And nobody sees it but me.
And me.
Like, I'm sorry, nobody sees it but us, Dono.
It's like really only two that keep telling everybody.
This kid's not an NFL quarterback.
He's not an NFL quarterback, let alone the Heisman guy.
You talk about Texas and all that they have in terms of talent.
He was named number one on the list of top 10 returning quarterbacks by on three.
You talk about Texas and what they have in terms of talent across the board,
not just that receiver, in the backfield, on the line of scrimper.
You talk about the skills that they have.
He completed 44% of his passes against the Kentucky Wildcats.
Against Kentucky.
And you're telling me that guy.
And I'm sorry, Donald.
I try not to yell because I know it comes off.
your earbuds and wrong way. And sorry to the everyday listeners as well and the one-time list.
I apologize to all of you. But I don't understand it. So with that being said, I mean,
Heisman odds are what they are. But I wish there was a way to short Heisman odds,
like how you can short a stock, because I promise you to take out long. I would take out
every future earning I would ever make to short Archmanning Heisman height.
That would feed families right there. I'd never work again, Donald. I'd never work again.
I was watching this amazing video, like a compilation.
So there was this guy who, you know, he correctly bet the over under on the national anthem in the Super Bowl.
And he got to that point where he won money on this because he flew out to San Francisco early.
And he stood outside the stadium for like three days.
And he would hear whenever they were practicing the anthem, like he would hear it from outside the stadium and he would time it on a stopwatch.
some call it insider trading i call it dedication to your craft like i i wish we could do the same thing
with these heismanods so after after arch at plus 950 you got uh josh hoover who's now at indiana
plus 1100 jeremiah smith receiver at ohio state at plus 1300 julian say in his quarterback
tied with him at plus 1300 dante more in a three-way tie with them at plus 1300 then darian menso at the 7th
best odds at plus 1,500. Gunner Stockton at Georgia plus 1,600, Sam Levitt at LSU, plus 1,600.
Brennan Sorsby, who's now at Texas Tech, I almost feel like he could be higher because that team has
a lot of talent at plus 2,200. Now, I'm not going to go through every one of these. You do have Malachi
Tony from Miami with the 14th best odds at plus 3,000. You got to go down pretty far.
You do have Kevin Jennings at plus 8,000. Those are pretty long odds. But he, he,
Here's the one that I know annoys you and I a little bit.
You got to go to find Isaac Brown, who's back at Louisville, who I'm not saying he's going to win the Heisman,
but I am saying there's a ton of value at Isaac Brown at plus $30,000.
That means if you make a $100 bet, you would win $30,000 if Isaac Brown wins the Heisman trophy.
I think that's a lot of value on a guy who, as long as he stays healthy this year,
he was not healthy last year.
As long as he stays healthy, I think can get into that.
conversation as a running back. And here's what makes us both angry. Somehow Ashton Daniels at
Florida State has better Heisman odds than Isaac Brown. I told you, Donald, being a quarterback
in today's world, my son, if I, if I am blessed to have a son one day, he will not be allowed
to do any blocking, any tackling of any sort. Don't you do any rip moves? Don't you do any swim
moves? Don't you do none of that. You will learn how to read progressions, one, two, that's what you
because I don't get it.
I don't.
But Isaac Brown, you said it was banged up last year,
about it.
Yeah.
For a guy who was banged up,
I went to the guess where he ranks in all football players,
not just running backs,
all football players who had 50 carries or more last year.
I want you to imagine where he ranks in terms of yards per carry.
I'm going to say seventh.
First, 8.8 yards per carry.
Oh, my God.
That's value, Dono.
Wow.
Now, let me make this clear.
You are a degenerate if you are betting on Heisman odds right now.
I do not want to make any misgivis about that.
Dono is the same type of degenerate.
He has called me multiple times, two in the morning, cigarette in.
I got one.
I was super jealous of that guy with the stopwatch outside Levi Stadium.
I'm like, why didn't I think of that?
But I'm going to tell you, if you want to talk value and guys that can do it,
the same, he will follow the same kind of path as the last Heisman winner from the ACC.
Because Isaac Brown is a human cheat code.
I watch the game against JMU.
If you look at the stat sheet and you look at the highlights,
you would think Isaac Brown had a fantastic game.
JMU kept him bottled up for all of the game except three carries.
But do you know what happened in those three carries?
There was a 60-something yarder.
There was a 50-something yard, I believe, and there might have been a.
90 yarder in there as well. It was really, really long. So I'm telling you that he, he has the
goods that if there is any player in the ACC non-quarterback, if I had to make that bet,
every single down that I got would ride on Isaac Brown, at least ending up in New York,
because again, he is a human highlight. Yeah. Now, I kind of, I glossed over Kevin Jennings a little
a bit who's at plus 8,000 odds, which is like not terrible.
Like he's, I think he's in the 20s, but like I, listen, you could see it.
Like if, if SMU, you know, they, they had definitely have a path to get to the ACC championship
game, which means they have a path into the college football playoff.
And Jennings is the straw that stirs the drink with that team.
I mean, he's, he's got the experience.
He's got the dual threat capabilities, which is usually something that helps
quarterbacks get over that Heisman hump.
So I think, you know, honestly, like if I'm being real here, while we think Isaac Brown at plus 30,000 is kind of a steal, probably get better value on Kevin Jennings at plus 8,000, because that him getting to the ceremony is a little more believable.
All right.
So, Don, let's play this game.
Quick back of napkin math here in terms of wins or losses, okay?
Yeah.
I'm going to name a team.
You tell me if this is a win or loss for SMU, just without much thought to it.
FSU.
Win.
UC Davis.
When?
At Louisville.
When?
Missouri State.
When?
Boston College.
When?
Virginia.
Probably a win.
Cow.
Probably a win.
At Syracuse.
Win.
Virginia Tech.
When?
Wake Forest.
Win.
At Notre Dame.
Loss.
At Stanford.
When.
So you've got to.
quarterback of an 11 and one team that is a dual threat that does have all the makings and and here's
the thing i don't believe in c j car at all because i keep asking everybody what his superpower is and people
are like well his his yards per attempt is very high well yeah when you got a heisman winner and a guy
a heisman candidate rather heisman finalist and a guy that many people are arguing is the same
level of running back as him people are going to stuff the box which then creates
opportunities to hit big shots down field.
When those two guys that will be drafted very early in the draft are now gone,
you now have to show and prove.
Yeah.
And wearing a gold helmet and beating Michigan State,
in the words of one Kendrick Lamar Duckworth, it's not enough.
Okay?
It's not enough.
So ultimately, we're looking at a situation where we're saying 11 and 1.
And here's the thing.
I, as high as people are on Notre Dame,
I see a world where if you keep that game close and Kevin Jennings is the sole reason that game is close.
And C.J. Carr is like, he's all right.
I mean, yeah, he was there.
People aren't going to look at that game and say, well, head to head, this quarterback won.
So he was better if the other quarterback puts up superior numbers with a lesser support of cash.
So I think there's a, I do agree with you that, again, you're still a degenerate,
but I do agree that there is value in that thing.
Well, speaking of being a degenerate, I found that.
so far only one team in the ACC has a win total for 2026.
And I think it's easy money that they're going to go under that win total.
And we'll tell you why.
You want to keep it locked right here.
We're only getting started on this brand new episode of Locked on ACC.

So, Kent, I was looking at Win Totals.
for this upcoming season.
And, you know, it's very early, obviously.
Only a degenerate like me would look this far ahead.
But there are only three teams that Fanduel has a win total for right now.
The Arkansas Razorbacks, the LSU Tigers, which kind of makes sense because everybody's
talking about LSU with Lane Kiffin, but like Arkansas and then Virginia Tech, you know,
the James Franklin excitement, I guess, is peaking.
So Virginia Tech has a win total, and it's seven and a half over under.
Okay.
Now, when I first looked at seven and a half, I was thinking, you know what?
James Franklin, you know, brings some more gravitas to that program.
He brought a lot of his guys from Penn State with him and they should be better.
So my initial thought was, you know, seven and a half sounds about right.
I might even think about going over.
Then I looked at their schedule.
And let me play the same game with you that you played with me on the SMU schedule.
give you, I'm going to give you the 12, the 12 games for Virginia Tech. And there's definitely
some wins on here, no question, but are there eight or more wins, okay? They open up against
VMI. When?
Versus Old Dominion at home.
Win. Should be a win. Should be, right? At Maryland.
That one gets a little dicey. That one gets a little dicey.
Maybe a maybe. Yeah, I'll say, I'll say, I'll say,
say a maybe but you know what you know what year one i think lock lew is going to be fighting for his job
give me give me maryland at boston college win okay uh home against pittsburgh lost yeah at cal
lost i think other side of the country yeah and quarterback play and lost home against georgia tech
oh that's a big maybe that's a big maybe but i'll give i'll give franklin's benefit of
out. Since I didn't give them the last, maybe I'll give him this one. Yeah, okay, I can give him that one.
At Clemson. Loss.
At SMU.
Loss.
Home against Stanford.
Should be a win. Should be a win.
At Miami.
Loss.
Home against Virginia.
I think Virginia Tech returns to their winning ways in this series here. I think they get a win here.
But still, like, counting is not my strong suit, but I counted, what, five or six loss?
is there?
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Yeah, you're going to need, you're going to need to win a bowl game to get over seven
and a half.
And I don't think bowl games count for those futures.
Oh, yeah.
It's only regular season.
Yep.
Yeah, it's over.
It's over.
It's over.
Let's pack this up.
Let's pack this up.
Yeah.
I think the biggest problem that I see for Virginia Tech, you know, it's so interesting the
phrasing that you use for James Franklin.
You said he's bringing over a lot of his guys and a lot of things over for Penn State.
Well, he's bringing over some of the bad things, too,
and the quarterback play is going to be a serious problem.
Like, why is everybody like, oh, yeah,
and Gruncle Meyer we trust?
Whoa.
Whoa.
What has this kid showed anybody to say, like,
oh, I feel full credit that this young man is going to not only be a starter in the power
four, but if you think about it,
do you think Virginia has the roster right now at this moment,
that they can have a JAG quarterback, a just-a-guy quarterback,
Not a guy that you win because of just the guy that like it's kind of long for the ride and you get eight.
No, I don't think they had that type of talent.
Wouldn't it be nice if they could like go in a time machine to 20, 23 and get that version of Kyron drones?
Like do you remember?
Now that.
Now that if you put Kyron Dr.
Because Conner Dros these last couple of years, I think the team around them depleted in such a way that it turned him, it made him look like just a guy.
even though I think the world of the young man, I really do.
I think if he goes to the right situation in NFL sits for a couple years and then develops,
I think it'll be just fine.
But the reality is, I mean, if, you know, it's like how everybody says the lions are Matt
Stafford away from a Super Bowl now.
And it's like, oh, well, well, you can't turn back the hands of time.
But in all seriousness, I think James Franklin has done a good job for year zero, year one type of deal.
but you need a quarterback in power for play.
You cannot get away with it in 2025 or 2026, rather.
It's not the world that it used to be where in the early 2000s,
you know, if you had enough talent, you'd get away with it.
Or if you just had a breakout running back or two, you're good.
It's not that world anymore.
So you have to have ways to make quarterback play a positive, net positive,
for you. I'm not sure if they have a net positive quarterback in that room. Yeah, and my big takeaway,
looking at the Virginia Tech schedule, the ACC didn't do them any favor, right? I mean, people
make jokes about how easy of a conference it is. It's like certain teams have relatively easy
schedules. I don't think Miami schedule is that tough, but Virginia Tech has the misfortune in one year. These
are all road games. In one year, they got to play at Miami, at Clemson, and at SMU. Like, that's,
That's bad luck.
I was having a conversation on Lockdown Cain's with Brian Smith, our pal Smitty.
And we got off into a tangent about some other teams.
And he brought up, you know, Texas Tech.
Like Texas Tech and BYU do not play each other in the regular season this year,
which it seems very obvious.
Our guy, your mark, over there in the Big 12 is like,
how do I give my conference the best chance of getting multiple teams into the CFP?
Well, if BYU and Texas Tech don't play each other,
we can try to get our two best teams into the playoff.
The ACC is not doing those types of favors.
What a quinky dink.
What a coincidence?
Oh, my Lord.
What are the odds?
What are the odds, Donald?
But no, I think this is a side effect of having these conferences that are mega
conferences.
I mean, rest of peace, Pac-12, we hardly knew Yee.
But the reality-
They are back.
It's not the Pac-12 we knew and loved.
Is Colorado State a Pac-12 team?
Yes or not.
Apparently, yes.
I mean, my answer under oath, my answer under oath would be yes.
That's not the Pact 12.
That's not.
Let me tell you something, Donald.
I'll play for the West 7 Rams growing up, okay?
That was my squad.
I loved them down.
I went back to the practice field and those kids weren't hitting.
They weren't running.
It was just very soft football out there.
I said, they were in the Jersey, but there ain't no damn West 7 Rams.
They ain't no rain.
There ain't no rain, you know.
And it's the same thing with the Pacto.
That ain't no fact.
That ain't that ain't what we think.
when we think of the fact of all.
But with that being said, this is a side effect with super conferences, right?
You're going to have these de facto uneven kind of schedules, because back in the day,
if you think about it, you know, the big 10, why did they call themselves the big 10?
It was 10 teams.
The big 12.
Why did they call themselves that?
It was 12 teams.
Why is that number important?
Why is that number being low so important?
If you have a nine game schedule and you are a team in the conference, how many teams in the conference are you not playing, Donna?
I mean, none of them.
Exactly.
And everybody.
Yeah.
Exactly.
If you're in a big 12,
and you've got a 12 team conference,
and you're one of the teams of the conference.
How many teams are you not playing?
You're guaranteed we cannot play these teams if you got a nine-game conference schedule.
Just two.
Two, yeah.
Just two.
That's it.
So ultimately,
with conferences of 18 teams,
unless we move to a 17 week,
don't get any cute ideas.
I know y'all heard Joe Judge up on that stand.
Y'all be good fathers.
Yeah, what was up with that?
Listen, listen, in CIA, don't get no damn cute ideas.
That Joe Judge thing was the, you know, that that old meme that was like nobody, colon, and then Joe Judge, like, the moms have to understand.
They got to play good football, no bid, like, Joe, we're talking about Trinidad Chambliss getting another season.
What are you talking about?
And does Trinidad even have a kid?
What are we doing here?
I don't know.
I don't think, I don't think so.
I don't know how Joe got off on that.
So, so realistically.
Right. When we think about what these schedules are and how they exist and all that, unless you want to expand the season out for 17 games for everybody, it's impossible to have balanced schedules with the conferences as large as they are.
Well, Kenton and I are going to go head to head in college basketball tomorrow afternoon.
I do want to take a look at the ACC. Weekend Hoops schedule. You want to keep it locked right here.
We're not done yet on this brand new episode of Locked on ACC.
This is Mazda's moving the game forward.
For those who show there's more to the score than what's on screen,
I'll tell you who's moving the game forward.
Miami and NC State are both having nice turnarounds in basketball this season,
thanks to new head coaches Jay Lucas and Will Wade,
who have both hit the ground running.
Wade has the experience.
Lucas, a first-time head coach, has the pedigree coming from John Shire's staff at Duke,
and they're going to go head-to-head on Saturday for a very meaningful
game for tournament position and seating for both teams. And it reminds us of what it really
takes to raise the bar. It's the extra work off the court. Dialing in every detail, give it the
extra fire, the grit, and the I never quit. We put that same passion into every model. Highlights
make the real. What it took to get there makes it count because there's more to a Mazda,
because there's more to you. Thank you for making Lockdown ACC your first listen. Make sure for your next
list and you check out Locked on Wolfpack hosted by Kent and Gibbs and Grayson Boone,
and I host Locked on Cains.
We're planning a crossover preview episode tomorrow, so 4 p.m. tomorrow, which is exactly
the way you want to spend your Valentine's Day, watching a little college hoops with Miami
taking on NC State.
To me, this is one of the highlights.
There's some really good games in the ACC on Saturday.
I mean, Clemson versus Duke at noon is the real highlight for most people.
but Miami at 8 and 3 in conference, NC State 9 and 3 in conference, both in the top 5 in the ACC.
Miami probably solidified their NCAA tournament with a quad one win over North Carolina the other night.
But if you want to make sure you don't get on that bubble, this is a big opportunity for Miami.
NC state probably solidified in the tournament for them as well, but seating is at stake against Miami.
This is a really big game on a Saturday afternoon in Raleigh.
Dono, you're looking at this too big picture, baby.
You keep talking about the NCAA tournament.
Did you know that the winner of this game will be in sole possession of the last double-by for the 80s?
That's right.
So coming down the stretch, this is very meaningful basketball.
If Miami wins this game, they jump to four, NC State drops to five.
If NC State wins this game, they build up another game lead over a Miami team that, you know,
they've had times when they've looked fantastic early in the season.
And then they looked like they were floundering and being bought back down to earth.
And they said, in the words of a very heated rival of theirs, not so fast, my friend,
and found a way to pull off a win against USC.
So there's a lot of stake here.
An NC State team that looked like they finally turned a corner.
Look like they finally found out how to defend the perimeter.
And Michael Paul said, you know how to defend what now?
45 points.
You learn how to defend what?
Here's a 45 piece nugget for you.
And we're going to be very stingy with the sauces.
So ultimately, it was a situation where both of these teams are coming down to stretch,
trying to figure themselves out, seatings on the line, tournament implications are in the line,
but even in the micro, ACC tournament implications on the line.
And here's an interesting fact about NC State that most people don't know.
The double-by format was introduced in 2014.
When do you think the last time NC State got a double-by was?
2014?
Never.
They've never had one.
Oh.
So never once in the history of the ACC tournament having the double buy has NC State been eligible to receive it.
So ultimately, this is a lot going on here.
And Miami having a first time head coach get a double buy would also be historic.
So ultimately, you're looking at a game that has a lot of implications for both teams individually,
for the conference as a whole,
and for like you said, NCAA basketball at large because both of these are tournament teams.
I love it.
We'll talk more about it tomorrow.
We're planning to do our crossover around 10 a.m.
So make sure you check it out.
You know what?
Invite Grayson on as well, Kenton, if he can make it.
Maybe we'll do the first ever three-channel simulcast.
We can have it on locked on ACC and locked on Cains.
And I'm not even sure if we're allowed to do that,
but I'm making up the rules as we go.
We're going to do a three-channel simulcasts.
We just like a judge in Mississippi.
We just break the rule, break whatever rules we don't like when we don't like them, okay?
Yeah, like you remember about a month ago, we did a Darien Mensa simulcast, which was like breaking new ground.
That was on two channels.
We do a three-channel simulcast.
You know what?
We might invite Isaac and do a locked-on college basketball as well.
We'll bring it four channels.
Hey, now, hey, now we're getting crazy.
Now we're getting, you know, there's all this new stuff.
What better way to spend their valetize day than with a hate square from locked on ACC,
Lockdoor College basketball, Locked on Kings, and Lockedongham Walk.
We'll talk to everybody tomorrow on another episode of Lockdown ACC.
We are part of the number one Lockdown Podcast Network.
Your team every day.
