Starting point is 00:00:49 Believe it or not, they're really kind to the SEC, not as much for the ACC. We'll get to that. Let's talk about Kenton, which ACC teams are ranked wrong. Now, we unveiled this yesterday on Locked on ACC. I each had a vote for this at the kickoff conference media days a couple of weeks ago. So you see how they rank it one through 17. It's Miami at one, then SMU, then Louisville, Clemson, Georgia Tech rounds out the top five, Virginia, NC State, Virginia Tech, Pitt, Duke rounds out the top 10. Then you've got Florida State, Cal at number 12, Wake Forest, Syracuse 14, North Carolina, 15, Boston College.

Starting point is 00:01:35 16 and Stanford, despite their one first place vote, comes in dead last at 17. So I want to focus first, Kenton, on the bottom half. Let's say number 10 through number 17. Who do you look at who got ranked in the bottom and say, the media, we got this one wrong, this team is going to overachieve that expectation? The obvious answer is Cal, but I also want to talk about the team right behind them in Wake Forest. I think the Wake Forest got better at the quarterback position. Don't get me wrong.

Starting point is 00:02:08 Losing Anderson at one of those safeties, that's a big loss. He was one of their leading tacklers, if not the leading tackler, every year for the past couple. And, you know, losing Claiborne, I mean, a back like that, hell of a back. Their freshman wide receiver as well, the guy who opened up the game against NC State with a kick return touchdown. I'm not making light of any of those things. I'm not at all. But I think they got better at quarterback, and I love what Dicker. it's building there. I love the way that he is doing it. And, you know, every year, people ask me walking

Starting point is 00:02:42 away from media days, who sold you the best tree? Who do you believe? Who, which coach do you believe? And I always say, I don't think that's necessarily fair because there are certain guys that are just better orators. They're better at getting folks fired up. It doesn't necessarily make you a better coach. Dickard, on the other hand, sells the vision and has proof of concept. Nine wins, There's proof of concept there. You've seen that they could do it. And you could say, well, oh, the schedule was Sharman's soft last year for them.

Starting point is 00:03:12 They were a team that was picked to finish somewhere around the same area last year. They were picked to finish somewhere around 13, 14, 15th last year and they won't now again. So you don't tell me the schedule is easy when you're saying that they're supposed to be part of easy for everybody else's schedule. Right. Wake Forest, Demon Deacons.

Starting point is 00:03:32 Let me give y'all some love, because you're y'all deserve it. I think that they're criminally underrated right along with Cal. Yeah, I co-signed on both of those choices, and we've talked about it on this show. Wake Forest just had the quietest nine-win season of all time. They play way too many games on the CW or they're buried on the ESPN app somewhere so deep you can't find it. I just think, like, the majority of the media that voted on this was probably unaware that Wake Forest won nine games last year. I believe they are underrated. And Kenton, I'm also, and you know I agree on Cal as well,

Starting point is 00:04:09 but I'm also going to make the case for Syracuse, but there is an asterisk on this. I think Syracuse at number 14, Kenton, I'm going to be optimistic, and I'm going to assume Steve Angelly will not suffer a season-ending injury, knock on wood, two years in a row. And if I am to assume that is the case, I believe Syracuse, for all their other flaws,

Starting point is 00:04:35 will be better than 14th in the conference this year. I think they're ranked at least two or three spots too low. But we know, of course, we saw it last season. They were one quarterback injury away from not having a plan B or a C or a D. But you look at their offensive output with Angelli last season, Kent. And he played in the first four games of the season before getting injured in the fourth game of the year. in a loss to Tennessee, they put up 26 points. In an overtime win against Yukon, 27 points.

Starting point is 00:05:08 In a win against Colgate, I know it's Colgate, but they put up 66 points in that game. In a win against Clemson, they put up 34 points, most of those points taking place before Angelie's injury. So we're talking 26 points, 27, 66, 34. then after the Angelly injury, Kenton, they put up three points, 18 points, 13 points, 16 points, 10 points, 7 points, 12 points, all losses in their final eight games of the season. So I'm telling you, Angelly has to stay healthy, but I believe he makes enough of a difference that when he's on the field, Syracuse is going to be better than the 14th best team in the conference. And I think that's completely fine and realistic to say. At the end of the day, when you're going to be, you know, you're talking quarterback play in the ACC,

Starting point is 00:05:58 Steve Angelly was one of the best when he was healthy last year. My only problem with instant belief in this group, you can't tell me that you were one position going down away from looking that bad. Like, with all due respect, this was not a competitive team. This was not a situation where we were like, you know what, they can be better,

Starting point is 00:06:23 but I kind of see the vision. This team was deeply, deeply, deeply non-competitive when you talk about post-Angeli's injury. So I hear you, I see the vision, Dono. The only problem with that vision for me is when I look at what this team was, we're not just talking about, man, they were decent, they were close, but they lost some really tough ones. I'm going to read off some actual scores that happened last year. And this doesn't even include the fact that he said, when we played Notre Dame, when we got off the bus, we knew it was over. By the way, the same guy that said, winters get washed and had guys running on the field after the game said, we didn't even get off the bus.

Starting point is 00:07:08 We knew it was over. If you look at their last, what is this? So Angelie got hurt against Clemson, right? If you look at every game after that, Dono, I want you to guess, how many do you think they? lost because they lost every game after Angelio went down. Yeah, right. But how many do you think they lost by single digits? Ooh.

Starting point is 00:07:32 I'm going to guess none of them. You are correct. They lost by 35, 13, 17, 25, 17, 28, 63, and 22 to Boston College. Yeah, that was bad. When you're getting, when UNC looks like a real football program against you, beat you a 27 to 10. Hey, come on. You can't tell me, you can't tell me we're a quarterback away. You can't tell me, oh, and if you are a quarterback away, but I understand your point,

Starting point is 00:08:04 but I also, with my eyes, I saw how much better they were when that quarterback was held. Like they, they looked like a real, now their defense wasn't good, but they looked like a functioning college football team when Angelie was out there. But that's where I was going, Donno. even if we do take that Stephen Jelly is quite literally a superhero. We will take that for granted and say, hey, he is that. Then the question comes down to Fran Brown, what the hell are you doing? How could you be so derelict in your duties as a head coach as to not pick up a single backup quarterback?

Starting point is 00:08:41 Not that's good. That could just keep you, could just tread water. He ain't going to make no game winning plays, but he'll let you tread water. He'll let your offense look like a legitimate offense. He'll hit the passes. He's supposed to hit. He's not going give you 50-yard drops in a bucket or anything like that. But he'll hit that hit from. They didn't have that,

Starting point is 00:09:02 which is very concerning. So again, I hear you, Dono. I would love to agree with you because I like Fran Brown. I really do. But it's hard for me to say one player and one player only cost you losing games by 63 points. I'll tell you, let me make another case for Fran here. He did address backup quarterback in the transfer portal this year.

Starting point is 00:09:27 So they picked up Amari Odom from Kennesaw State, who led them to a conference USA championship. They also went out and got Malachi Nelson, former five-star recruit, doesn't look like a five-star player anymore, and Danny Lauder, who apparently played at Georgetown. I didn't know Georgetown had a football team. But here's the thing. They don't have anybody on a lacrosse scholarship playing backup quarterback this year.

Starting point is 00:09:55 Dono, I agree. I agree that they addressed the quarterback position in a meaningful way. I agree that they're going to be better than 14. I would be shocked if they were in, like legitimately shocked if they were in the top half of the conference. Cal and Wake Forest, I would not be shocked at all. My jaw would stay firmly in place right here. Like, wait, what? one of those teams finished sixth in the conference?

Starting point is 00:10:18 Huh? The firm one plays. If Syracuse finished sixth in the conference, I would legitimately say, oh, my God, give Fran Brown a lifetime extension, and I'm not playing. Get him what he needs. Get him what he needs.

Starting point is 00:10:30 And again, this is not me saying I don't think the Frank Brown can ever be a good coach. This is me saying right now, I struggle with the idea that one player going down cost you that much to where you don't lose any games by single digits, that's a little bit much for me. That's a bridge too far for me to believe

Starting point is 00:10:53 one year you're going to turn that around. Well, I want to talk about the top 10 and who's underrated or overrated there when we come back. Starting point is 00:13:12 I am Alex Dono, host of Lockdown Cains. Okay, so Kenton, we took a look at the bottom half. But what about, let's say, the top 10 here with Miami getting 165 first place votes, SMU second with six first place votes, Louisville, third. They got four first place votes. Clemson comes in fourth with seven first place votes. Georgia Tech got a pair of first place votes. Then you've got Virginia, NC State, Virginia Tech, Pittsburgh, and Duke, the defending ACC champs.

Starting point is 00:13:46 I guess maybe we could start there. Duke ranked too low, too high after losing Ments and Barka? They still got Nate Shepard running the football. How do you feel about the way the defending champs are ranked? You know, I think that they're fine. I think that they're not ranked poorly at all because you're looking at a situation where you say, well, they were ranked so high or whatever they were ranked last year, they won the ACC championship.

Starting point is 00:14:11 Number one, due to the tiebreaker rules, that's the only reason they were there. I will not take away that they won the ACC Championship. I will never be the guy that's like, well, it's a technicality, and it'll never happen again. Oh, well, so sad, too bad, results-based business. Their result is an ACC champion. So I give them all their respect for that. I can't buy Walter Egan. I can't buy it.

Starting point is 00:14:34 No. I'm sorry. And then, even if I am to buy him, who's your wide receiver won? I say all the time, every great quarterback, it's one of two things, right? Either he really is that superhero that he puts on the Cape and he saves the town every episode or he's got a blankie. He's got a guy that's always going to be open, always going to make it happen. You've got to have one of those two, right?

Starting point is 00:15:02 Miami, you got Derry Minza and Malachi Tony. And if that ain't enough, Cooper Barcate wide receiver one for Duke last year. SMU, you got Jennings. He's the guy. Clemson, you got a bunch of different. wide receivers that if healthy, they could be a number one on an ACC team. You don't look at that when you're looking at at this Duke team. You don't have multiple guys that you can say, hey, he'll be a wide receiver number one

Starting point is 00:15:28 anywhere else. You don't look at Walter Egan and say, hey, you can surround him with nothing and he will take a powerful team to the top half of its conference. So I think Duke is right where they should be. You know, I think I might flip Pittsburgh with Virginia and just swap them out, put Pitt at number six, Virginia at number nine. I just think there's going to be some regression to the mean for UVA and the post-Channler Morris era.

Starting point is 00:15:55 And I think Pitt with Mason Heinzschel is just a fine player. Their defense is always going to be good with Narduzzi. If Narduzzi wants to prove that the ACC is better than the Big Ten, he better have a strong season this year. I feel like Pitt at number nine feels a little low. You know, here's the interesting thing about Pitt being the number nine. and UVA being in number six. Pitt total score in terms of the vote, 1740.

Starting point is 00:16:21 UVA's total score, 1981. Now, why is that important? Although they are three spots apart, that is a 240 point difference. Pitt is almost 300 points overdue who's one spot behind them. Like, that's the difference in confidence that the voters have.

Starting point is 00:16:39 So the voters agree with you, Dono. The voters agree that Pitt is closer to UVA than Pitt is to do. That is what the voters are by and large saying here. And I'm going to tell you, that to me is what makes this question so hard about who in the top 10 is rated incorrectly because outside of Clemson being number four

Starting point is 00:16:59 where I'm like, who's going to be your quarterback? That's my biggest question there. But outside of that, everybody else, I mean, look at six through nine. All of those teams are separated. Don't we both feel that Georgia Tech at five is too high based on who they lost from last year. And you pointed out to me, and I've been looking at their schedule.

Starting point is 00:17:21 Georgia Tech has a really tough schedule this year. I don't think they're going to be the fifth best team. Not only is it the schedule, but with all due respect, I've seen nothing from Alberta Mendoza to tell me he's going to be a dude. And even beyond that, you talk about what that team is or is not. I like all the backs that they have. at some point in time, you're going to have to throw the ball. At some point in time, you're going to have to throw the ball.

Starting point is 00:17:48 And here's another thing a lot of people on accounting for. Georgia Tech lost not only their starting quarterback who'd been there for forever, the former offensive coordinator is gone. The offensive coordinator that came up with those super wide splits for the backs, where the backs are basically lined up as wide as your tackles, maybe even outside of that sometimes. And a lot of people don't think, well, how does a little thing like that mess with the defense? It messes with your alignment.

Starting point is 00:18:11 and football defensively is about alignment and assignment before anything else. Those wide splits mess with your eyes, mess with your angles, where you think to yourself, okay, wait, we should be able to seal this edge up. Wait, no, we can't because this running back is too wide. Well, okay, so let's get wider than the back. Well, what just happened there? Now I've opened up a hole in the middle of my defense because I've expanded and gotten thinner in the middle. Well, no, damn it, we got to be able to stop something here.

Starting point is 00:18:40 And then you're like, okay, we've stopped the power. would read, but Hoseley's going now, and now we stopped. No, Haynes is going. Well, which Haynes, Haynes King or Jamar Hayes? You don't know, right? So I do think that they'll kind of, you know, be a little worse this season. I wouldn't be surprised to see them slide back to the middle of the pack. And I love me some Coach Key.

Starting point is 00:19:00 But that's why I say the guys who get you fired up every year are not necessarily the same guys that are going to be getting it done because it comes down to a multitude of factors. And, you know, again, Coach Key is the type of coach. I wouldn't be surprised if they finish at five. I also wouldn't be surprised if they finish at 10 or 11. I wouldn't be surprised because at some point in time, your quarterback's got to pick that right arm or that left arm up. And he's got to go get it to some of those skinny guys on the perimeter.

Starting point is 00:19:26 He's got to do it. And I don't know what that's going to look like for this Georgia Tech team. Starting point is 00:21:34 who co-host the Andy and Ari Show does a lot of their written content as well. He is predicting the entire college football playoff field. And you notice that that very large logo that he has winning the national championship, The Texas Longhorns, who I will admit are stacked with talent. I'm not as convinced by their quarterback as some people are just based on the last name that he carries. But Texas is loaded, Kenton. He's got how many SEC schools in there? He's got Oklahoma getting in. Texas.

Starting point is 00:22:06 He's got LSU getting in, Georgia, getting in Texas, obviously. Ole Miss getting in. It's a lot of SEC, Kenton. does the SEC break their championship drought and are the horns the ones to do it? Dono, there is no championship drought in the SEC, just like there's no war in Ba Sing for those of you who understand, you understand. In the same way that, you know, they say Jim Kong, you know, Jim, what is North Korea's leader's name?

Starting point is 00:22:41 Oh, Kim Jong-un. Kim Jong-un. Kim Jong-un has never taken a poop. He's never done. it. His body doesn't work that way. He plays golf. He shoots in 18. 18. 18 Eagles. That's it. Hole in one, baby.

Starting point is 00:22:55 Bop, bop, bop, bop, bop. Just the same way that the SEC wins every single national championship. They win every single one of them in the preseason, Dono. Remember last year, Indiana, coming into the season, Indiana was a laughing stock who shouldn't be allowed in the playoff anymore. Remember that last year? Last year, coming into the season, Miami wasn't going to sniff the playoffs because Carson Beck is just, ugh, yuck.

Starting point is 00:23:24 Elon got the goods. They got those big old slowbacks. None of them can run. None of them can break off any big plays, you know. They got wide receivers out wide. Who's going to do something? Well, they're going to have a four-star freshmen show up and like the world on fire. He's not even a five-star, Dono.

Starting point is 00:23:42 He's not even a five-star. What are we expecting here, right? he's got some weird little thing going across his tape. What is this? What's going on? Right? Preseason. Preseason, Clemson, and, you know, maybe Penn State would have a chance to interrupt the SEC mafia.

Starting point is 00:23:59 And lo and behold, in the postseason, what actually happened? What actually happened, right? Miami made a deep run. Indiana ran rough shot to the championship game. They did. They did. So, again, all of these preseason predictions, for all these SEC teams.

Starting point is 00:24:16 Listen, I love me some Hollywood smothers, man. I'm still bumping Sosa Van Dros, even though he's now a long corn. Still love the guy. Heard nothing but great things about him coming out of NC State. And I'm not kidding you. I've heard, I've had other players who transferred out,

Starting point is 00:24:30 heard some god-awful things about them where I'm like, oh, I'm going to stop talking about him on my show. Not Hollywood smothers. By all accounts, hard work and do, good guy, low ego, all that good stuff. Love him. As long as Archibald Charles Manning is the quarterback. at that program, you will not win a national championship.

Starting point is 00:24:48 I am so sorry to tell you. It is a lot like Drew Allerhype all over again. I feel like, Dono, I always feel like I'm taking crazy pills when they tell me about these quarterbacks. They try to sell me the dream. And I say, okay, let me buy the dream. Let me watch the tape and buy the dream with you. And then I watch the tape and I'm like,

Starting point is 00:25:05 this is a nightmare. This is a nightmare. As much as I hate to give a King Crusader credit, Dante Moore is by far the better quarterback between those two guys. for sure. By far. More polished.

Starting point is 00:25:18 He's ready to go to the league right now. And, you know, I think Texas has a great team around Arch. I just think at some point in time, your quarterback plays going to matter. And Julian Sam beats him out in that category. Him and Sam Levitt, I haven't watched enough tape on Levitt to give a definitive answer there. But I know Julian Sand is a better quarterback than him. I would say a healthy Levitt is better than what we've seen from Arch. It's just with Levitt, I think his in his,

Starting point is 00:25:45 injury cost him spring, so we'll have to see how he looks this year. I know for a fact, Daria Minza is a better quarterback than him. I know that we just talked about Dante Moore. I'll go CJ Carr easily. Oh, yeah. Easily. So again, we're looking at a situation where of the final eight teams that this guy's predicting, maybe you get John Matere.

Starting point is 00:26:06 I think maybe him and John Matier depends on the day. Other than that. Him and Gunner Stockton, I might take, I might take Arch. I'll take Arch over Stockton. I'll take October Gunner. I can do that. But of the eight teams, we just named one that we're like, yeah, no doubt. The other seven, one is contested.

Starting point is 00:26:24 The other six are like, hey, y'all going to lose that quarterback battle. You have to win out everywhere else at such a high level. The quarterback battle doesn't matter. And here's the problem with that. This ain't those old Alabama teams where you are so much more talented than everybody else. It doesn't matter anymore. It doesn't work like that in today's college football. that now talent is more equally distributed, you need a gunslinger who can, with all due respect,

Starting point is 00:26:50 and I hate to bring this memory up for you, Dono, the difference in last year's national championship was that fourth down run. It was that run where Fernando Mendoza goes legend and says, hey, this is why I'm a high's winner. Let me show you something real quick. That was the difference in that game. If it was a more pedestrian quarterback who, you know, the coach trusts you less, you can't break a tackle, you can't make good things happen with the ball in your hands,

Starting point is 00:27:15 it would have been a problem. So again, I don't see how a team with lackluster quarterback play wins at all, but it just means more. So again, it's a hypothetical. And in hypotheticals, the SEC is, you know, about a million and five and zero. They could be playing the deities from every single religion there is. And guess what? The SEC will tell you, we'll lock Buddha up.

Starting point is 00:27:40 He ain't got no answer. for us. Your little Krishna over there ain't got nothing. Your little Yahweh, don't tell me nothing about that. We've got Archmanning, you know. The last thing I'll say on this, so he's got only Miami in from the ACC at a four seed. But then I feel like Ari is personally trolling me, or trolling Miami, at least, by having Miami, of course, lining up with Oregon in the bracket so that Mario Cristobal can get bounced by, you know, the team that he used to go. And obviously Oregon's a really good team, but I will say, what is Oregon done in meaningful playoff games in the Dan Lanning era?

Starting point is 00:28:18 They've gotten blown out, right? Mario Cristobal has actually had more success in the postseason than Dan Lanning has. So eat that. Lennie has beaten Texas Tech. He's curbs stopped them out. Other than that, nothing. Nothing much to talk about against power four teams as opposed to Christobal, who his one time going to the party, they did a whole lot of Dan.

Starting point is 00:28:41 They danced all the way to the end of that thing and came one back ball short of winning a national championship. So, you know, I do give Mario Cristobola all his love and respect here. And again, I look at this and I say, oh, it's okay. But preseason, the SEC always has 20 teams, 30 teams in the playoffs. You know, they only got 18, but somehow they'll get 30 in. They'll get the 2015 Alabama Crimson Todd in the playoffs. They'll get them in. They have more teams in the playoffs.

Starting point is 00:29:11 then the playoff has spots. Yeah, yeah. All I'm saying is the Mississippi State volleyball team needs to be considered for the playoff because when you look at how they're outside hitters really come out and attack that thing, you've got to believe that they could moss a couple of lowly ACC defensive backs.

Starting point is 00:29:27 You've got to believe it, Dono. So, you know, again, this is a situation where it's a preseason prediction and preseason predictions is hypothetical football. And who's the best conference in terms of hypothetical football? That's the SEC. It just means more. You know, they get so hypothetical with it.

Starting point is 00:29:44 They have actual head coaches saying, let's let Vegas decide who gets in the playoff because the odds makers know better than everybody else. Actual head coaches said that shamelessly. By the way, Brett McMurphy from On 3 put out a stat. The last three years, college football playoff records versus the power four, the other power four conferences.

Starting point is 00:30:08 The Big Ten is nine and three in those spots versus other Power Four conferences. The ACC is three and three. That's actually the second best record. The SEC two and seven against Power Four teams from other P4 conferences. And the Big 12 is Ofer. But the SEC two and seven. What you mean to tell me that the SEC is down there with the conference that's splitting the same amount of money that one team in the Big Ten is making?

Starting point is 00:30:38 for jersey patches? You don't say, Dono. You don't say that when they have to play other teams, all of a sudden, they look bad. Wow. Who could have guessed, Dom? Who could have guessed that hypotheticals are just hypotheticals? You know, who could a guess?

Starting point is 00:30:59 Again, they can be the conference hypotheticals. They can be the conference of preseason national champions. Because preseason national champions, it means about as much as me having locks if my mom did give you that perm way back in the day. I'm joking. I would never lie my deceased mother in such a way. But they mean about the same amount.

Starting point is 00:31:17 Nothing. Zilch, zero, nada. The postseason, regular, the postseason national champion is where it matters. And guess what? Miami has more appearances in the college football playoff national championship than the SEC does since the playoff expanded. How about that? How about that?
