your first purchase on this episode. Yeah, we have more media votes to break down. So the ACC preseason player of the year has been revealed. And I'm going to say something very nice about the ACC voters because I thought the top five was exactly the way I would have had it. ACC preseason team Kenton has been released. And Miami leads the conference with, so it's seven players who make the list.

but one of Miami's players actually made it for three different positions, making it nine selections for Miami, which is a lot. Not quite as much as Clemson had, though, last year when Clemson had like half the roster with 11. In the words of Dionne Warwick, surprise, surprise, because who's shocked that the team that was overwhelmingly voted, hey, this is going to be the best team in the conference. They have the most players on all ACC teams. Dono, here's an actual fact.

If you tallied up each and every team not named Miami's first place votes and you multiplied it by seven and a half, they would still be short of the amount of votes that Miami had in terms of first place. Every other really, here's the interesting fact, you could multiply it by eight because there were 20 first place votes outside of Miami. Miami had how many first place votes, Donno? 165. 20 times eight is what, Dono? 160. I'm glad you answered that for me. I was still getting there. Don't worry. We'll do the knowledge here on Lock on ACCC. So you could multiply it by eight and you still would end up in the situation where Miami is still the top team.

Now, that only happens when you have an overwhelming glut of talent or you have one or one or two guys that are like freaks show stuff. to the point where you're like, oh, that's these two guys, these three guys are going to end up number one through 10 somewhere in there. That's where these three are going. The reality is it's not a shock to anybody that the team that's picked the finish first also is now being picked to have the most all-ACC performers. Yeah, so for Miami, it's seven players, nine total selections. Here's how the other top representative represented teams played out.

Clemson and Virginia had four selections each. Louisville and SMU had two apiece. Then Boston College, Duke, Florida State, Georgia Tech, Syracuse, and Virginia Tech each had one selection. I thought I'm not trolling you. I really thought that they had a selection. We'll go through the team. We'll go through this one. So let's start.

Normally I would say that like, oh, Kenton, I thought NC State had somebody. Like I didn't mean it as a troll. I was like, where are they? But let's go through the team. So offense first, and then Kenton, I'll get your thoughts. Quarterback is Darian Mensa receiving 112 votes. Two running backs, Mark Fletcher, Jr. of Miami, and Isaac Brown of Louisville. Three wide receivers.

It's Malachi Tony of Miami, who got, I think, the most votes of anybody at any position. So that one was like almost unanimous. Malachi Tony, Deuce Robinson of Florida State, and Bryant Westgo, Jr. from Clemson. Tight end is Jeremiah Hasley of Duke. All purpose back is Malachi Tony of Miami, so he's on offense twice. Offensive tackles are PJ Williams from SMU, Mikhail Bowley from Virginia. The guards are Noah Josie from Virginia, Samson Okunlola from Miami, and Josh Bates is the center out of SMU. Anything they got wrong or anything they got really right on that offensive ranking. think PJ Williams is not just the class of the conference. I think he's the class of America in terms of left tackles.

He's extremely light on this. He can, I mean, he can redirect like there's nothing. And he had the one liner of the entire, of the entire ACC Media Day saying, when I protect Kevin Jennings, it's like being a man in the house having to protect my little sister, you know. And so we, which is a little odd. It's like, are you, are you comparing Kevin Jennings to your little sister? but I got the point.

Like I got the spirit of the comment. You get the point. You get, yeah. Don, no, you got a sister. You know what it's like. You know, you know. Yeah, it's true. It's time to go about your sister.

It's like, hold, hold on now, play. Hold on. That's my sister. You better watch yourself. So, you know, I think the PJ is incredibly correct because he has, and he has a fluidity that you don't see guys at that size with. And last year, he showed the ability to move around some furniture in a running game as well. So with him being who he is and,

and also Baker in the middle of that offensive line kind of anchoring and holding things down there. I think that they have the opportunity to be really special this year. But I want to say, PJ, that is one of those picks that to me, I'm surprised he wasn't unanimous because I don't see a ton of other left tackles in the conference that I would say, I had a year comparable to his last season. Yeah, on that note, PJ Williams, and I agree with everything you said, a tremendous player. He only got 96 votes. And that's what I'm saying.

That's what I mean. Yeah. See, you had, you had a bunch of players were in three figures, over 100 votes. Mensa had 112. I think 188 total voters on this. So Mensa had 112. Fletcher had 127. Isaac Brown, I'm also surprised, fell short of 100.

Tony, I mentioned 164. Deuce Robinson had 131. And everyone else is in double digits. Like, I'm with you. I thought PJ Williams would be pretty, like, when I was going through that page, of the ballot. I didn't have to think about it a whole while. I'm like, all right, PJ Williams, let's move on to the next page. Exactly.

Him and Isaac Brown, and everyone, Lord knows how much of Isaac Brown guy I am, okay? Lord, I think the world of that young man, he's got me nervous for when he comes to Carter Finley. I'm shaking in my boots already, and I'm done playing. I don't got to run guys like that down no more. And I'm still sitting here, like, what are we going to do, Coach Dorr? Hey, listen, you know, Coach Ellie, you don't got to tell me the whole game player, but like, do we have something playing for him?

We got to ask up because that guy, again, you could do it right. Every time in the game except three, and he'll go off on those three carries for 200-some yards, three touchdowns, and you just got to live with it. Well, let's talk about the defense when we come back. And I need to speak to the manager because I looked at the cornerback selections and I am not satisfied. So, you know, Kenton, and I know I'm going to upset some people listening to this episode

because Miami people get very cocky when the team is actually pretty good. But I was a little disappointed. And there are some good corners in the ACC. Don't get me wrong. But I was a little disappointed when I see that the two cornerbacks selected for preseason at All-ACC. It's Chris Peel of Syracuse. It's Ashton Hampton of Clemson. You're telling me neither OJ Frederique nor Xavier Lucas can get enough votes to be on that list. How dare you? I want to speak to the manager. Dono, let me tell you something. You should be happy that the

manager did this because the last time we had an overwhelming favorite to win the conference and the All-ACC team was just littered. Every time you looked up, you were just like, oh, another player from their team. Oh, another player from their team. Oh, another player from team. Oh, look, another guy. Hey, guess which team this guy's from? What happened? Yeah, it's true. It didn't end well. You know, so I'll take it. In the words of Mario crystal ball, that line of questioning is disrespectful to the game of football. Okay. We don't, we don't want to have to think about, oh, you know, who's preseasoned all ACC and all that good stuff? You want to be the guy at the end with all the guys on all

ACC. Coming in the last year, how many guys did UVA have on all ACCT? Oh, I mean, probably one or two, right? Was it any? Going out. Going out how many? You see what I'm saying? The number was accidentally. So if I'm Miami, I'm okay with these guys being here. And with all due respect to OJ. Frederic and his partner in crime, these guys are a hell of a corners in their own right. To me, it's much more, we don't have the type of, and this is with all due respect to the guys in the conference right now. We do not have the type of guys with long resume of complete lockdown, shut down, an entire side of the field to where you're like, it's irrefutable.

It's no, right now we got a bunch of guys that depends on your style and what you like the most. That'll be who's who's who and who's what in terms of the cornerbacks. Now, the safety position, if we would have got those wrong, then I would have said, hold on, brother. What are we doing? Because we got some safeties in this league that are big time due. But, you know, at corner, again, not saying that they're not big time, but it's much more, do you prefer a man guy? Do you prefer a guy that's going to press up a little bit more? Do you prefer a guy that's going to make more tackles and play a little bit more off-cutter, you know, all that type of stuff. Yeah, all right. So let's go over the rest of the team. I mentioned the cornerbacks who made it. Ashton Hampton of Clemson, Chris Peel from Syracuse. By the way, the voting was a lot less one-sided defensively.

There's only two players that received over 100 votes, so there was less of a consensus on the defensive side I noticed here. The safeties are Bryce Fitzgerald of Miami and K.P. Price of Boston College. Your defensive ends, great choices. There's a lot of good defensive ends in the ACC. Will Helt of Clef Lubin of Louisville. Your defensive tackles, Amad Moten Sr. of Miami, who was the second highest vote getter on defense with 126.

Kamari Copeland to Virginia Tech, great player. The three linebackers, Sammy Brown, Clemson, Cam Robinson, UVA, Mohamed Torre, Miami. And we mentioned the safeties in the corners already. So anything good or bad stand out to you there. I want to give one man some love right now that we probably won't be talking about a lot during the season because his team, P.U., absolute stinks of him.

K.B. Price, that is a young man that has been that Boston College the entire time. He's been there all the way. He's gotten calls. He's gotten calls. And this is, this is me speculating. But I'm a, as sure as the sunrise on the east and sets on the west, I'm sure he's gotten calls say, hey, man, get up out of Boston. Come, come play over here. We'll give you some money. We'll get you in the big time bowl games and all that good stuff. But he has remained loyal to the soil with Boston College. And that's just the off to field part of it. The on the field part of it, he is a absolute. monster in almost every single way you could want out of a safety.

He led that team. He was top three in all of these categories for Boston College, tackles, pass defended, and interceptions. And if you watch the game tape of Boston College play any game, you will know instantly. You don't need to know his number. Watch the game. And within five, six plays, you'll say, oh, that's KP.

Yep, that's him. Because he is, he's everywhere. He's got that long, lengthy frame. He's put some weight on that frame, but he still moves great. I love me some KP price. You know, if he would have gotten a portal, hey, I would have did a little Tampa. I would have did a little, hey, KP, come on, come on. Come on, come on down the coastline.

You know what I mean? You'll be all right. You'll be all right. Ain't nothing wrong with a little bit more heat. But he's a great guy, man, and I'm excited that he's getting that recognition now as a first team, all-ACC safety. And, again, I just think the world of them. I wish he were on a better team

so we would talk about him more. Or hell, Bill O'Brien, do your job. Yeah, why don't you make it a better team? I mean, you're right, though. K.P. Price still being a Boston College Eagle, that is the definition of loyalty, right? Coming off, a two and ten season

could have gone to a lot of programs with more recent success, but he chose to stay there. So he is loyal, loyal to a fault. Let's take a look at the special teams results here. So they're three specialists. Kicker Aiden Burr from Georgia Tech. You remember he hit that

super clutch game winner against Clemson. Against Clemson. Last year, I mean, you became a household name after that. That was it. He had a very good year last year. I think you'll have another good year again. Punter is Daniel Sparks from Virginia. And your specialist, Malachi Tony, from Miami. I'm not sure, Kenton, if it's ever happened before. Maybe it has where I feel like maybe Des Reed probably had multiple appearances in previous ones. But Malachi Tony appearing three times. Maybe Des Reed, but that hasn't been done too many times in the ACC. I don't even think Des Reed appeared three times.

Yeah, it was probably twice. Yeah, that feels a little outlandish. Don't get me wrong. I like Malacitone a lot. I think that he should have been on the ballot for, you know, all ACC or ACC player a year and all that. but there's a lot of stuff going on with that. I won't want to go too deeply into that. But to me, when he got on for receiver, that removed him from all purpose back, in my opinion. Because don't get me wrong, Malachi Tony. And Donno, nobody's watched more Miami football than Alex Donno except the guys on that staff.

That's just the reality, right? Probably so. And here's the thing. Dono, how many plays did Malikai Tony line up as something other than receiver? How many times did he line up at true running? or something along those lines. I mean, maybe once or twice per game on average, you know, something like... That's not enough to get you in the all-purpose-back conversation, in my opinion.

Like, obviously, you see the name. Yes, he was the best player that was eligible in the all-purpose-back conversation. I don't think he should have been. Maybe two, three times. Two, three times. Is that enough to get you? To me, to me, if you line up there, you got to give me at least seven to ten snaps at a position for me to talk about you there.

Okay. You know, remember the Ironday-Gadston situation, whatever, well, should we consider him a tight-end or should we consider him a wide receiver? I could hear the argument for both because he lined up in-line tight-in, about 10 snaps a game. He lined up in the slot a lot more. But you could at least say there's a good amount of time he's lined up in this specific role.

And granted, in Dino-Baber system, tight-ins weren't in line that much to begin with, but when they were, he was the guy. A lot. So I'm not sure how he ended up on the all-purposeback conversation as well as wide receiver and returner. But, I mean, hey, he is a phenomenal player. This is not a shot at, you know, Tony. This is not me saying, oh, he deserves less accolades and less love because we talked about some of the ways that he should have got loved that he didn't. But the reality is, I don't, you know, I don't necessarily like three times on one team.

Well, in the interest of precision and accuracy, I just asked Gemini, how many times did Malachi Tony line up at positions other than receiver? So it was, and I think this includes the playoffs. They don't specify, but exactly 44 times. So that's an average of, I mean, if it's regular season only, four times per game, if it includes the playoffs, that's a percentage that is out of my pay grade. I'd need a calculator for that one. But here's the breakdown.

lined up at quarterback or took direct snaps out of the Wildcat formation six times. He lined up as a running back 17 times and is a return. See, that shouldn't count. He lined up as a return specialist 21 times. So I think really the number is 23, not 44 because they include the special teams returns. And don't know, even if you include that. But see, this shows you everybody, even wearing the canes. hat and the Cades polo.

Alex Dono is an honest man. Because when we asked, how many times did he line up somewhere else? Dono's original answer was two to three times per game. If we take it down to that 20 number, divided by 12, what does that get you per game? In that ballpark. Less than one. In that ballpark. So, again, this is not a knock.

This is not saying he couldn't do it. I think he could. I think he could be that change of pace to Mark Fletcher. Just boom, boom, boom. And then all of a sudden, they're like, oh, thank you. Damn, we got to tackle Tony too now. I get it. I think he could do it.

I just don't think he's been asked to. You know what I'm saying? It's like saying that it's like a Steelers fan having to hear that Lamar Jackson is basically what Cordell Stewart was. And they're like, wait, what? Cordell Stewart played like eight positions. Could Lamar do it? Probably. Does he do it?

No. You know, it's a very different scenario there. And, you know, I mean, again, way to tie back into the ACC with our boy, ACC legend. last Heisman winner out the ACC Hopefully one of the Donald's boys changed that Maybe maybe my boy CJ Bailey changes it who knows You know Lamar Jackson

The magic of being named ACC preseason player of the year, which is a spoiler for what we're about to talk about. But Darian Mensa, Kenton, I think last week he had like the seventh best Heisman trophy odds. He's now at third for Heisman trophy odds. C.J. Carr, Arch, which is still a thing, I guess. And then Mensa. So Mensa is moving up.

So, Ken, I want to, you're making some faces there when I talked about Mensa, you know, shooting up those Calci odds for Heisman Trophy. I mean, is ACC player of the year that powerful preseason? player of the year, I should say, that powerful of an award that it boosts your Heisman odds. Well, that's the thing that's confusing for me, Dono. No new information came out. Yeah. Nothing new.

Nothing. No. Like, I could understand if we got word that, hey, C.J. Carr has suffered a terrible accident and he won't be available for the first five years or five, first five games of the year because he slipped on a banana pill and, you know, his meniscus is gone now. I'd be like, oh, okay, I get it. I understand him moving up. Oh, Arch Manning, people finally watched the film.

Okay, I get it. You know, understandable. Completely understandable reason that that would happen. But nothing changed. Nothing changed. Literally, it was just, hey, by the way, he's the ACC Pre-C season player of year. And everybody said, well, wait a damn minute. Let's go.

I need in on that action. I need in on it. He was already the only quarterback returning from last year that had 3,500, yards and as many touchdowns as he did with as few interceptions. He took his wide receiver one, took his wide receiver one over to the school that has the guy that's on the all-ACC team three times and the back that went into the playoffs and said, hey, I know y'all know me as a short yardage guy, but I'm going to start averaging seven yards per carry.

Give me a 55 yarder in here as well. Longest run of the season, something slight, nothing too major, bringing back his backup as well. bringing back multiple pieces on the second level and further back. And you're telling me that now people are just saying, oh, Darien Minza could go there. Daria Minza has two paths to win a Heisman

that a lot of people don't realize, don't apply to the guys ahead of them. He plays in a system where he won't have to be Superman and do it all, which both of the guys ahead of them have. He has the talent to be the guy to do it all, get you there. Only one of the guys ahead of them could maybe be in that conversation. And then he has

the plethora of weapons surrounding him freak show stuff. All of the weapons coming back, which again, none of the guys in front of him can say. They can't say they got the talent and the weapons coming back. CJ Carr's losing two first round running back. Two of them. And his big body receiver, Malachi Fields. Don't get me wrong. I think Jane Greyhouse,

wonderful. I think that team's going to be very good this year. They're losing a lot. in terms of skill position that he has to get reacclamated to. Minza is like, oh, yeah, I am changing teams. But so is my wife. And he's getting more toys. He's changing teams and he's got more. He left and took his boy with him.

He said, hey, hey, stop all this madness in Durham, man. Let's get up out of here, okay? They ain't got nothing going on in here, man. Let's head on down to South Beach and see how that treats us. So again, I think that it makes sense. But to me, he should have been the favorite all along. Yeah, I agree. So MENSA does win the prestigious ACC preseason player of the year,

receiving 97 votes. And then I'll give you the rest of the top five. There were nine total players on the ballot. The top five, though, is exactly the way that I would have had it. For this one, we just select one. But if they had asked us to order it, I would have had the top five the exact same way with MENSA at number one, Kevin Jennings of SMU2.

Isaac Brown Louisville third C.J. Bailey, NC State, fourth, and Deuce Robinson, wide receiver from Florida State fifth. That's like the cleanest top five I've ever seen. Yeah, that is a very clean top five. And that is what kind of surprises me about Isaac Brown not getting more of those first place votes when we talked about the ACC, you know, all conference team. Because what running back was ahead of them on that list? You didn't name a single guy where it's like, hey, there's a world where he puts up more numbers and does more than him. But that is a really good top five list. And I'll tell you what, Kevin Jennings, he's grown on me a lot.

He's grown on me a lot. He's grown his game a lot, which I absolutely love. You can tell that's a guy that's dedicated to his craft. He's not resting on his laurels. He's not letting his chin get soft from victory. He wants it all. And I'm excited to see him go for it because I like him a lot as a lot. a player as a human being.

The guy's just phenomenal. I'm going to see what you do, but obviously, you know, my boy, CJ, hey, C.J. Bailey, you know what I mean? Ain't no tamper going on around here. You can try all you want to, Dono. Oh, I tried, allegedly. He's loyal to the soil.

You understand? He's K.B. Price loyal to the soil. And we're not as bad. Hold on. Nobody's that loyal. Nobody is K.P. Price loyal. You're not wrong, Donald. You're not wrong. But, you know, this is a situation where we've got a fantastic group of guys. The only thing that I'm disappointed about, normally I can make a gripe. I can shake my fist at the sky that there wasn't a defensive player included.

Remember last year, I was all, Ruben Bain needs to be included. Oh, we should have wood. There were two on the ballot, but they didn't finish top five. So it was to Clemson had two defensive players. Sammy Brown linebacker came in six and Will Helt came in eight. So yeah, there were a couple defensive guys on there. They didn't get very many votes. And here's the thing.

I like Sammy Brown. I like Will Holt. Sammy Brown plays the game with his hair on fire. He is the definition of a sideline and sideline guy. He really is that. And Will Helt, phenomenal. Leading pass rush around the team that had two guys predicted going the first round coming into the last year.

Don't get me wrong. I like those two guys. I cannot in good faith shake my fist at the cloud and say, One of them needs to be in the top five. Because, I mean, I just think it's levels. And if you're knowing that you're a defensive player going into this, you have to be above and beyond. Last year, I could make that argument for Ruben Bay.

And so, no, he should have been higher. He needs to be higher. When Peyton Wilson was played, I could have made the argument. Peyton Wilson needs to be the guy. He's that impactful to the game. He needs to be the guy. Right now, we just don't have that type of defender in the ACC with all due respect to these defenders.

And here's the thing. This is preseason. So somebody, clip this. Prove me wrong. Prove me wrong. Show me that a defender in the ACC deserves to be the ACC player of the year. Show me something.

Yeah. That's well said. I want to say something before we go. And I'm not a sentimental guy. I'm always looking forward. But I must say it is bittersweet to say that, and I'm not even 100% sure that this is my last one, but I think this is my last show on Locked-on ACC.

And I'm staying with the network. I'm still doing Locked-on Cains, and you're going to see me on ACC squad shows, and I'm going to be blowing up Kenton's phone during football season with my hot takes while I'm watching the games.
