Locked On ACC - Daily College Football & Basketball Podcast - The ACC Is Healthier Than You Think... | Preseason Media Poll Revealed! Did They Get It Right?
Episode Date: August 1, 2024The ACC is financially healthier than college sports fans think it is. Revenue has increased more than 50% over the past five and over 200% over the past ten years! As noted by the News Observer newsp...aper, it’s not a problem of having money but of having enough money compared to the Big Ten and the SEC. Has the ACC truly been guilty of financial mismanagement as Florida State and Clemson have alleged? Those two schools are currently suing the conference in an effort to break free of the Grant of Rights agreement. Hosts Alex Donno and Kenton Gibbs discuss how the ACC can survive after the departures of FSU and Clemson but they will obviously take a hit whenever those schools manage to get it. Meanwhile, the preseason media poll has been revealed. Credentialed media from the ACC Kickoff have cast their votes and ranked every football team from 1 - 17. Donno and Gibbs were among the voters. They discussed the results and revealed which teams came in as surprises.Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors!GametimeDownload the Gametime app, create an account, and use code LOCKEDONCOLLEGE for $20 off your first purchase. He's Kenton Gibbs from Lockdown Wolfpack.
I am Alex Dono from Lockdown-Kaines on this episode of Lockdown ACC.
The preseason media poll is out.
Did the reporters get it right?
get it wrong with the ordered finish one through 17 of every ACC football team. We'll talk about
it. We'll critique it. We'll overreact to it, I'm sure. But Kenton, I want to start with with this on the
financial future and present, really, of the Atlantic Coast Conference. I was reading a great article
in the news observer. And of course, a lot of these numbers were revealed last week at the
ACC kickoff. You know, Jim Phillips spoke glowingly about the financials. And the
financials are objectively good in the ACC, but then when you start comparing them to a couple of other
conferences, that's when they don't look as good. But here's what they wrote in the news observer.
It's not so much a money problem as it is a problem of having enough money as judged by conference
commissioners and everyone from school presidents and administrators to boosters and fans. And if there's one
thing college sports has underscored again and again, it's that more is never enough. The ACC has
become Exhibit A of that reality amid the lawsuits threatening its future.
ACC revenue has increased more than 50% over the past five years.
It's up more than 200% over the past 10 years, more than 330% over the past 15 years,
and almost 550% over the past 20.
And yet in their lawsuits, both Florida State and Clemson have essentially accused the
conference of financial mismanagement, of failing its members,
television money has become more and more lucrative, they write.
So it's interesting the way that they put it, Kenton, it's like, if you were to just look
at the ACC's financials in isolation, you would say, wow, that's a successful booming,
growing business and growth is always the most important thing in corporate America.
The problem is when you compare it to the payouts and the monsters that the SEC and the Big Ten
are becoming, it doesn't look so good.
But they do point something out, Kenton, that in those Florida State and Clemson,
and lawsuits, they do accuse the ACC of financial mismanagement and violating their fiduciary
responsibilities. The numbers don't really paint that picture. Yeah. And you, as we've talked about
before, you have to go back to the previous administration in terms of commissioner and company to
even come up with that argument. And even beyond that, you're looking at a situation where it's,
that's a hard case to prove. It's hard to prove that there was a systemic from the top down
unequivocal failure to the point where it's like, hey, there is no way a judge can rule against this.
It's very clear that they did not do what they were supposed to do, not in terms of, hey, we took a bad bet,
but in terms of you were negligent, you were sleeping at the wheel, you avoided things that were very obviously going to be your path making more money.
I think that's going to be really tough to say the ACC has done those things, again, given the numbers that you just quoted.
Jimmy, I think that where the argument would come from, and this still has to be proven in court, where they violated their fiduciary responsibility.
You know, you, of course, brought up the previous commissioner.
If he really did cut a below market sweetheart deal for his son, Swofford Jr., who was an executive at Raycom, if he really cut a deal that he could have gotten a better deal with an open competition, then yeah, I could see that.
that obviously is going to be a big cornerstone in these lawsuits between Florida State and the
ACC Clemson and the ACC. And hopefully we get down to the bottom of that because obviously
for anybody who's got a horse in the race in the ACC, you would like to know that they're making
the most possible revenue. Another interesting angle has come up because, again, I don't know,
I don't know how excited ACC fans are to welcome in Cal and Stanford and SMU, maybe SMU a little bit.
but it's kind of kind of been met with like a ho-hum.
Okay, who cares?
Three more teams, but they're not like seismic needle-moving teams.
We've out of the conference.
But so this ex-account, Genetics 56, who's the guy who just, he, all he does is tweet all day, all day about conference realignment.
Now, I didn't appreciate how this guy went after our friend Drake Toll from Lockdown Big 12 earlier this week.
But nonetheless, this was interesting information that he put out on his ex-account.
He said, do the ACC put themselves in a good position for survival by adding SMU, Stanford, and Cal?
He says the answer to that is highly likely a yes.
Why?
Based on the language used in an older TV agreement between ESPN and Conflict USA and based on FSU's complaint against the ACC,
staying above 15 teams will not likely materially harm the financial impact of the TV agreement with the ACC.
In other words, ACC schools are unlikely.
to see a big decrease in their media rights revenue with the exit of FSU and Clemson.
So in essence, adding those three teams may have kind of saved the conference.
I know Florida State and Clemson weren't too happy about it, but Kenton, I think the ACCC,
they obviously when they lose Florida State and Clemson, whether that happens two, three,
four years down the road.
They're going to be in a worse situation, not a better situation, but I don't think it's going to
spell the literal end to the conference.
I mean, like I've always said, this is much more akin to the Big 12 without Texan
Oklahoma than it is the PAC 12 without USC, UCLA, Oregon, and Washington.
That's just the reality of what we're looking at here.
And that's why I'm very firm on the fact that perception and reality are not matching up
at the moment.
There's a deep perception of, hey, there's something going on.
There's something in the water that is not quite right here.
There's something that's not quite passing the smell test with the XEG.
see in terms of success or lack thereof. However, the numbers are bearing out objectively.
They're doing their thing. Phillips is doing his thing. He's showing up for this conference in the
way that he's supposed to. So I don't really see a way that people can look at the addition to
these teams and say, oh, my God, it was a terrible thing knowing what we know now.
Yeah. Yeah, absolutely. And also, you know, this goes back to what Phillips said a week ago
about how he's going to fight as long as it takes or these court battles with Florida State and Clemson.
You know, the reason why, I think the big reason why he's got to do that, it's not because he expects them to stay.
I think Phillips knows as well as we do. It's inevitable that Florida State and Clemson are going to get out.
But for Phillips, if he makes sure that it takes as long as possible for them to get out and the fee is as high as possible,
if you can keep the rest of the teams together?
Because listen, again, and to that point,
the genetics 56 made, the ACCC could survive
without Florida State and Clemson,
but could they survive without Florida State,
Clemson, North Carolina, Virginia, Virginia Tech, Miami, like, no.
So they've got to try to keep as many of the current schools in
as they possibly can.
That might save the conference.
Absolutely. And like I've said,
that the situation with Florida State and Clemson,
this is an example setter.
You have to make it clear.
You cannot leave this conference scots free.
If you want to leave, fine.
Pay us out our nine digits.
Go on about your way.
Going about your way.
Because again, that's a big enough deterrent to where most schools are like,
we don't have that in the conference and we don't want to do what it takes to get that.
We don't want to bank on private equity to get that.
Because again, private equity is always going to get their money back with a little
something on the back end of it.
So even if we were to say, oh, they'll give you this for a zero percentage of loan.
how many years do you say a Wake Forest?
How many years do you say Syracuse?
How many years would you say a lot of these brands thinking of a Duke?
How many years would you have to be good?
Or not even Duke because they're a private school and I'm sure they got a ton in the coffers.
But in terms of many schools in the ACC,
how many years of being in a positive do you have to bank on
in order to say we're going to make enough to pay back X amount of money
that's that's kind of closing that gap and chasm between us and the
us and the big two.
The reality is these teams are not here because of friendship and because they like each other.
They are here because they are held together by a contract.
And if this is, if a precedent is set that, hey, Jim Phillips is not a fighter,
he'll roll over and let you out at the first time of trouble,
then like you said, it's not whether or not you're
without Cleveland and Florida State.
It's can't survive without Clemson, without Florida State,
without Dirty Foot Club, without Duke,
without NC State, without Miami,
without all of these teams who now feel like
they can find greener pastures elsewhere
without having to pay a fee to get out.
When we come back, the preseason ACC media poll
just dropped.
They've tallied the votes.
We'll tell you where every ACC football team
is going to finish 1 to 17 this year.
And by the way, I can only
criticize the media so much because Kenton
and I were among the voters on this. We were
among the preseason poll voters.
I guess we could say we
did we get it right?
We'll discuss when we come back.
And by the way, did the
consensus number one make
number one atop this list? You want to keep
it locked right here. We're only getting
started on this brand new episode of Lockdown

Thank you so much for making this episode of Locked on ACC your first listen today.
For your second listen, make sure you check out our other shows.
We're in training camp mode, fall camp.
Kenton does an awesome job on Locked on Wolfpack.
I do my best on Locked on Cains, and I was out there at the first day of fall practice yesterday.
day talking with Cam Ward and Rubin Bain and Mario Cristobal and company.
So make sure you check out Locked on Wolfpack and Locked on Cains.
Speaking of the Cains and Wolfpack, Kenton, where did the teams that we cover finish in this ACC preseason poll?
For those watching on YouTube, I'm going to share my screen here with this Brett McMurphy X post.
And I'll make sure I shout these all out for the audio audience.
So unsurprisingly, you had Florida State finish first in the preseason poll.
They got 81 first place votes.
Clemson at number two, 55 first place votes for Dabo and Company.
Miami at number three, 17 first place votes.
I was one of those.
I don't know who the other 16 were, but I was one of those for Miami.
By the way, Florida State and Clemson were also in my top three.
So same top three just I put Miami on top of mine.
NC State at number four, Kenton.
I had mine the same way.
I had NC State at number four as well on my poll.
How does that compare with your top four?
And where did you have the Wolfpack?
Yeah, the top four were very similar for me.
I had the Wolfpack at,
I believe I had the Wolfpack winning it
with Florida State at number two.
There you go.
Somebody's got to stand up for their teams.
I'm going to tell you this, though.
I'm going to tell you this,
and I mean this from a very genuine standpoint.
point in terms of looking at that top four i think whichever way you cut it whichever way you slice it
there's a and i was a resounding belief that those are going to be your top four any order you want to
put them in that's up to you if you believe k k klevnik has got his act together you know you'll
you'll want to put them at one if you believe the dj u ceiling is a lot lower than we think it
maybe so is this floor you will want to knock floor to stay on number one if you believe in uh williams
and brown out wide for clemson as well that's another thing that could give them
there. Miami, if you believe that the talent can be coached well enough, that the coaching
won't lose them games, you would have them there. And of course, NC State, you think that
the offensive pieces are going to be just fine. That lineback, of course, going to come along a little
bit from what we saw in the spring game. So all four these teams have arguments. I don't think that
any of these four teams, you would say, oh, that's malarkey. There's no way. I'd be shocked,
appalled crying and throwing up if I saw them at the end of the year in Charlotte.
what would you say for like for for for Florida state is their best argument being that we we know they can do it and we know Mike Norvell can do it because they just won the conference last year do you think a lot of it is that or a lot of it is like truly believing in their talent and I take nothing away from their talent Kent and there's obviously a lot of new faces there on that team a lot of transfers but good players like very very good additions that they've made Florida state always have a great has a great has a
great defensive secondary, but do you think a lot of the reason why they get, you know,
almost 30 more first place votes than anybody else is we just saw them do it last year.
Yes, that's absolutely a thing.
Anybody who says they don't suffer from recency bias at all, congratulations, good for you.
Most people are not like you.
And the words of Andre 3000, you're only funky as your last cut.
And Florida State's last cut in which they had a full complement of their starters was winning
an ACC championship game.
So I'm not surprised that people are looking at the person sitting at top of the hill saying,
they're probably going to be at the top of the hill next race too, and that's okay.
So as we get out of that top four, I differed slightly on number five and number six, very slightly,
because I literally, I have them flipped.
So the media poll has Louisville at number five and Virginia Tech at number six.
And here's what's interesting about that, Kenton.
Virginia Tech got five first place votes.
Louisville got zero first place votes, yet they still are in front of Virginia Tech in that poll.
But I had the Hokies at number five.
I'm a big believer in Kyron drones, as you know.
And I'm also a big believer in not only their defense, but the Hokie special teams.
I think it's going to start to look a little bit more like Beamer Ball this year.
Beamer ball is back, baby.
Beamer ball is back.
I'm going to tell you something.
And I mean this from the bottom of my heart.
Seeing Virginia Tech be good at special teams makes my heart smile.
to a level that's a little insane, you know, the lunch pail still being there.
That is a program with an identity.
And I think what Louisville not having any first place votes despite being higher than Virginia Tech says is the idea that we've talked about before in terms of ceiling and floor, right?
I think that everybody sees Louisville's floor as being much higher than Virginia Tech.
However, I don't think people see Virginia Tech as have or Louisville is having as high of a ceiling as Virginia Tech does.
So moving on through the top 10.
So the media poll has, again, FSU, Clemson, Miami 3, NC State, Louisville 5, rounding out the top 5.
Then they've got Virginia Tech.
And then at number 7, I actually voted this one the exact same way, Kenton, SMU at number 7.
While I don't, maybe I'm wrong, I don't take SMU seriously as like a contender to win the conference because of their step up in competition.
But I do believe in their offensive talent.
And I think that that's going to be a football team that's going to score a lot of points.
And they have a very easy schedule this year.
Yeah.
And we talked about this team before in terms of their wide receiver court really is one of the best in ACC.
That's not an exaggeration.
That's not us saying, oh, well, well, they should be.
The only thing that you can question this team about is how will they look, taking a step up in conference?
Yes, they played against Power 5 for Power 4 now teams well in the past, but you're asking you this team, can they do it week after?
week after week after week over the course of an entire season.
To me, that's the biggest question.
Can they hold up in the trenches for all of those games?
And that will determine what their season will be.
So number eight and number nine.
Again, I had it the same two teams but flipped on mine.
So the media poll has UNC, the old dirty foot club, as you say, at number eight,
with Georgia Tech at number nine.
Georgia Tech, by the way, got one first place vote.
So probably somebody who hopped over from Atlanta to Charlotte who cast their vote for that.
So I actually, I had Georgia Tech at 8 and UNC at number 9.
And a big part of the reason is I believe in Georgia Tech's quarterback play a lot more than I believe in UNC's this year.
And that makes sense.
That means.
Haines King is prime time ball.
I don't care what anybody says about them.
Yes, there are some moments where you're like, hey, just take the sack, make a better re-right here, make a better decision.
When he is rolling at his highest clip, him to Haynes, the receiver, they're tough to stop.
They're extremely tough to stop.
And again, I think he has got that program moving in the right direction
as opposed to what Mack Brown has going on over in Chapel Hill.
So, and this, okay, number 10, this one, this one's interesting to me.
So not only does Cal, newcomer from Berkeley, crack the top 10 in their first season in the ACC,
but Kenton, they got two first place votes.
And you remember, we pulled up on Monday's episode, I think it was we pulled up the ex post
from that Cal fan who said nobody in the ACC scares me.
They're going to run the table on the cut.
Maybe he had a vote whoever that guy was because they got two first place votes.
Now this is one, this is the first one where like I personally, and I'm not saying my ballot is like some holy, you know, thing.
But this is where I differed quite a bit from the consensus because I had Cal 14th on my ballot.
Maybe I did them a little injustice at 14th.
But 10th with two first place votes, maybe they'll prove me wrong, but it seems a little high.
I do not understand this idea that somehow Cal is going to come over here and dominate.
I do not understand it. I do not get it. It makes no sense to me. Listen, we're going to have you on the show.
And you know who I'm talking about. My man who made the tweet that we talked about.
There's no need to pull up to Charlotte and cast the ghost vote like this.
We're going to bring you on.
We're going to ask you to tell us why we're wrong about Cal
because I too had Kyle near the bottom.
With all due respect, I think that Jay Knott is excellent.
I think that a good running game matters.
He could definitely be a game changer in the ACC.
But with that being said, they still have to find other weapons outside of them.
When teams start loading you up with eight-man boxes or seven-man boxes
when you only got five in the block, that's when you're going to see,
oh man, I guess this is a little different because we have shown precious little
and through the air.
Well, I want to talk about the final seven when we come back.
Plus, I've got a question to ask Kenton, given he's a former Division I defensive player.
Of course, he played defensive line at NC State about why defenses are usually ahead of
offenses when you start fall camp because a couple of Miami players said that that was the
case today when I was out there yesterday at practice day.
So folks, we're not done yet.
You want to keep it locked right here to locked on ACC.

All right.
So what stands out out of the bottom seven here?
And I'll repeat this for the audio listeners.
The ACC Media preseason poll is out.
Credentialed members of ECC kickoff last week all voted on this.
You've got Florida State 1, Clemson 2, Miami 3, then NC State, Louisville, Virginia
Tech.
SMU, UNC, Georgia Tech, and Cal rounding out the top 10.
Then you've got Duke at 11, Syracuse 12, Pitt, 13.
And then this one, Kenton, Boston College.
I'm not arguing with their spot here at number 14.
That seems fair.
But they got a first place vote.
Like, who in good conscience, in good conscience, showed up to the ACC kickoff last week and said,
yeah, BC, they're going to pull it off.
Forget about Miami.
Forget about Clemson.
Boston College is winning it all.
I think you're muted, by the way.
I know exactly who did it.
I know exactly who did it.
Alante James Black.
That's who it was.
That's who it was.
AJ, stop doing that.
Stop doing.
Listen, even Bill O'Brien feelings aside, okay?
Even Bill O'Brien feelings completely aside.
I love Castellano.
I really, really do.
I promise you, in terms of,
of people who would not declare themselves
Boston College fans, I don't think there's a
single person in the country who did not
get paid to do it that watched
as much of Thomas Castellanos
as I did. From the Northern Illinois
game all the way through the end of the season,
I had to see it anytime I
could watch him on TV.
That team around him
is veckless
to say the least.
The more that I watch them, the more that I'm like,
how did they get to a bowl game?
What was going on?
How did they do it?
Don't get me wrong.
Defensively, they did improve throughout the season.
But I'm sitting here saying to myself,
the belief that Boston College of all teams,
of the bottom seven teams,
they're not even a team that I would pick to surprise people.
They're nowhere near the team I would pick to surprise people.
So I'm very, very confused by that,
but more power to them and more power to whoever.
whoever's finger accidentally slipped on the button and went to Boston College.
So then Wake Forest at 15, Virginia, 16, Stanford dead last at 17.
But I want to follow up with you.
So which of the teams in the bottom seven would be the one you say is going to surprise people?
All right.
People are going to be upset at me for this because I've been a defender of this guy for a long time
and his seat is getting a little warm up there in Pittsburgh.
But Nate Yarnel's season, I have a feeling.
I don't think that they'll pop out and win the ACC.
I think they can be much better than the 13th best team in the ACC.
I think, I don't know why.
I have a feeling that nobody circles the wagons quite like Coach Narduzi.
And I feel like when his back is against the wall, he's going to put on a coaching masterclass here.
I don't, and this is one of the things I can admit, I don't have a ton of evidence to support this.
This is just a 100%.
I'm a football guy.
There's a gut feeling here.
But with all the rest, I don't see much either by way of talent to say, you all are headed shoulders above Pitt.
Like, I just don't see it.
So I think Pitt could be a team that surprises folks this year.
You heard it here first, folks.
All right.
So I was out Wednesday at the first day of Miami Hurricanes training camp.
And so back going to spring, I covered every spring practice, Kenton.
And the offense, Miami's offense led by Cam Ward, they probably won more spring practice.
than the defense did. But on day one, here's Cam Ward saying it. And then Ruben Bain, given the
defensive perspective, Miami's defense took the first day. They up right now. They're at 1-0, I believe.
We weren't as opposed to as an offense today as we need to be. And, you know, we just didn't play
our brand of football the whole time. We had spurts over here and there, but we got to be
consistent. That's the biggest thing for us. So they'll 1-0.
Yeah,000 percent. We were getting out to the room. Seven on inside run.
all the way to the last team call it.
A lot of young guys,
sports in the interception,
a lot of guys made some plays
from second level all the way to the lead line.
So we look pretty good as a whole unit,
but I'm pretty sure the office is going to try to bring them on.
So we all go up for another team.
Now, all my years covering football, Kenton,
and you played, I cover.
I sat on the sidelines and watched.
Usually early on in training camp,
first day of fall camp,
usually the defense is ahead of the offense.
Was that your experience when you played?
And why is that?
Of course, and it's because defense and offense are so different by nature.
The offense's advantage is knowing where they're going to go before the defense knows.
Now, defense is all about reaction.
That's what we're better at doing.
When offenses first get into fall camp, they have a very condensed version of the playbook.
They have very simplistic reads.
It's very much so you're not seeing.
a ton of double moves in day one of install. You're not seeing trick plays in day one of install.
You're not seeing things to take advantage of a defense's overaggression, which we all know,
day one of camp is going to bring out that overaggression. It's going to bring out that.
It's going to bring out since I put my pads on and knock somebody stuff loose. It's going to bring
that out, but you don't have the proper things to counter that day one offensively. So it's
normal for defenses who, again, their specialty is that.
and react kind of backyard, junkyard football thing, as opposed to offenses, there's supposed
to be some refinement.
There needs to be timing.
There needs to be, okay, this is how I'm going to get this going, which is definitely an exact
opposite end of the spectrum of defense, which is why early camp, especially day one,
lends itself to the defense.
I like what what Bain said at the end, that he knows the offense is going to try to write the
score in day two.
