We're available free, wherever you get your podcast. We're free on YouTube. We're part of the Locked-on Podcast Network, your team every day. Today's episode is brought to you by GameTime.
Starting point is 00:00:36 Download the GameTime app, create an account and use code, Lockdown College for $20 off your first purchase. On this episode of Lockdown, ACC, we'll talk about week 12 ACC football matchups, those that not only have ACC championship implications, but also we're looking at bowl eligibility with just a few games left to play. Will the ACC be a one-bid league for the college football playoff? Even before we started, I got Kenton telling me he's ready to compare the SMU Reservated the Texas resume, but Kenton Gibbs, he's Kenton Gibbs from Lockdown, Wolfpack.
Starting point is 00:01:09 I am Alex Dono from Lockton Caines, reported today by On Three Sports, Thomas Castellanos, quarterback, now the benched quarterback of Boston College, he's reportedly going to hit the transfer portal. And I'm not even sure if he's going to come back to BC because Bill O'Brien, you know, head coach of Boston College mentioned earlier this week that Castellanos had didn't, I guess, didn't react very well to being bench was going to take some time away from the team. He would update the media on when Castellanos would come back on Wednesday. O'Brien basically said, you know, we don't know if he's coming back. The reports come out about hitting the portal.
Starting point is 00:01:46 Now, help me with this because you and I, you and I are both big believers in Thomas Costalanos's talent, right? I would love to know if there's like more to this story because Costalanos, to me, does not look very good right now. whether whether or not you agree with him being benched. Anytime you hear reports, is why I'd love to know if there's more to the story, because any time you're talking about a player who essentially gets bench, and just decides to take his ball, go home when his team has three games left to play this season and a lot of things still to play for,
Starting point is 00:02:20 you basically quit the team after you got benched. Now does this become a situation, Kenton, where other teams that are looking at Castellanos, does this become a buyer beware scenario? Does it? Does it? Would it? I mean, you're talking about buyer beware for one of the most dynamic quarterbacks that is going to be returning next year because I think it's a foregone conclusion. He's not going to the draft and he's not going back to BC. So this is one of the most dynamic quarterbacks to hit the market. And you're telling me it's going to be a buyer beware. I can't remember which NFL exec said it. But one of them was quoted as saying, if Hannibal Lecter could make a tackle and ran a four, four weeks say he had an eating problem. So with that in mind, I mean,
Starting point is 00:03:07 you're looking at a situation where Thomas Castiano and a guy in Bill O'Brien, who has run away top talent in the past, this is not a new thing for him is now in this situation.
Starting point is 00:03:23 So I mean, and again, objectively speaking, this young man has not been used how he's been used in the past. Even beyond that, we have not seen the type of the type of scheming that worked for them earlier in the season. Even if you say teams got wise to it and everybody was, because he still has half the rushing attempts that he had last year. Yes, but they're not in the same way. They're not in the same way that, hey, we're going to use our back as a lead blocker to get Thomas Cosdiano some extra yarders,
Starting point is 00:03:54 which every team that has a really good running quarterback in the year of 2024 does. because everybody's taking advantage of this fun thing called numbers mismatches, except Boston College all of a sudden. So, you know, I look at this situation and I say to myself, I highly doubt that a quarterback hungry team next year is going to look in the portal and go, I don't know. His exit from Boston College was a little sticky for me. I'm not sure I want to run a file of the great and mighty big,
Starting point is 00:04:29 Bill O'Brien. Mm, tighten of the game, Bill O'Brien. You can't just coach players and take players, man. I don't think anybody's going to be too worried about that when they're thinking about Thomas Cox. Well, and let me, to your point, you know, it's obvious Costalanos is not a scheme fit for Bill O'Brien or maybe Bill O'Brien's not a scheme fit for him.
Starting point is 00:04:52 Because, yeah, you look at those rushing numbers. Like, this is a dangerous dual threat running quarterback. he had 1,113 rushing yards last season. So far this year, 194. Obviously, in a difference with the way he's being utilized. But again, I just think that, you know, if you, and I know, players are transferring everywhere left and right. Like last year, you even had players leave a program in January and then before they
Starting point is 00:05:24 even played a down for their new program in April, they were leaving for somewhere else. So I understand it. I just, again, you couldn't wait until the regular season was over to leave the team? Like, that's a little concerning to me. But you know what? With that in mind, Kenton, I, I've got a hunch. But like you say, there's going to be a number of teams interested.
Starting point is 00:05:44 Like, he's not going to scare power 14. Don't you feel like a fit for Costalanos, especially the history on how they build their roster? Florida State. Doesn't that make almost too much sense? I mean, come on. Come on. Don't send my boys in the graveyard.
Starting point is 00:06:02 But the play style, he gives you Jordan Travis vibes with the play style. And Mike Norvell has not been the same without Jordan Travis, wasn't very good before Jordan Travis, not very good after. Don't you think Florida State's going to make a run? I mean, I would be surprised if they didn't look at him. Because the two guys that they have on the roster are coming back, DJU is out of eligibility. I'm sure everybody in Tallahassee is grateful for
Starting point is 00:06:30 and everybody in the ACC in the ACC that's not a knowledge lamenting. But the two guys that they have on the team out of attorney, which is Brock Glenn and Brock Glenn's backup was who is the third guy? Luke Cromenhock. Yeah, Cromenhock it down there and hope somebody catches it. He's, you know, these are two guys that have you seen anything special from them? Have you seen anything from either one of those guys to indicate, like, it's not worth it to make a run of some QVs in the portal?
Starting point is 00:07:02 So I'd be shocked if Florida State didn't go after Thomas Costellanos, but I would hope he's smarter than to do that to him. So I would hope that he's got just a little, just a wee bit more sense than to do that type of foolishness. And I just want to say one more thing before we get off of it. Thomas Costiano says rush for 190 yards this season, correct? 194, yeah. 194, 73 of them came in the first game. That is what I mean by coaching malpractice. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:07:35 You used him in the capacity, which he's used to being used, to be the team that we all thought was really good. And it was like, hey, I need you to kind of sit back there and work it out in the pocket here. And I know some people are going to sit here and say, well, you know, that's just because they didn't need him to run as much or they tried to run a more. Did they? Did they really? I mean, when we watched that Missouri game, where you and I not both discussing,
Starting point is 00:08:07 hey, why is Thomas Casiano not running? What's happening here? So, again, I think that this is a moment where a coach and the player never quite set horses. And I don't think that anybody's going to look down upon Thomas Cascianos for not taking a benching well. I really don't. And even if there was somebody who would look down on him for not taking the benchy well, I still think on the open market, he's probably going to get a meal somewhere. He's probably going to get him a million-dollar NIL deal somewhere
Starting point is 00:08:37 because he's electric, he's dynamic, and he's proven to be a floor rate. He may not raise your team ceiling super high, but he took some Boston college teams that were just P-U outside of him, injuries all over the place and raised them up to a bowl team. Well, when we come back, I want to shift our focus back to the college football playoff. Is the ACC just going to be a one-bid league? Which of the contenders for ACC championship might be able to put up the best run in a college football playoff? And I want to read one of the YouTube comments, Kenton, we got yesterday.
Starting point is 00:09:13 Because, you know, I wasn't, and maybe it was fair, but I was attacked by a Louisville fan. I was viciously attacked. And I want Kenton to weigh in on whether I am in the wrong here or if I was in the right. Because you guys were only getting started. You want to keep it locked right here on this brand new episode of Locked on ACCC. For your next listens, check out our other shows. Kenton Gibbs and Grayson Boone do an awesome job hosting Locked-on Wolfpack. I host Locked on Cain, so we have you covered on those shows as well. All right, so Kenton, when we were talking, you know, ACC championship picture,
Starting point is 00:11:09 I characterized it as a three-team race where you've got SMU unbeaten in conference. Miami and Clemson both have one conference loss, but Miami does have a tiebreaker over Clemson. I want to read you this comment that we received on the YouTube channel from yesterday's episode. It says, Dono, Dono. You just don't like the cards, do you? You're wrong. Mathematically, he says, there are five contenders left.
Starting point is 00:11:37 Yes, he says it won't happen. So he's kind of admitting I'm right. He says, yes, won't happen. But mathematically, there are five. Let's give Miami another loss or SMU two losses. Let's have Pitt beat Clemson and Louisville. Pitt ties and win percentage of conference opponents puts them in the championship game, or let's have Pitt lose to only Louisville with the same scenario.
Starting point is 00:12:01 Louisville, their win percentage out of conference opponents puts them in. Miami, SMU, and Clemson have a poor conference opponent showing, playing FSU, and for some Stanford, why do you hate on the card so much, he says to me. Remember, you said if BC beat them, they would be the most underachieving team in the conference, not FSU, not NC State, not Stanford, not Virginia. I mean, I think that may have been Florida State is obviously the one. He says, come on, man, you're doing an all-ACC pod here. Not sure what Louisville did to you, but come on, man.
Starting point is 00:12:38 You know, Kenton, maybe I'm still bitter that one of my favorite high school football players ever, Teddy Bridgewater back in the day. I'm showing my age. I was really upset when Teddy Bridgewater decided. And I was when he decided. decided to go to Louisville over Miami. So maybe I still hold that grudge to this day. Oh, Teddy two gloves chose the cards over.
Starting point is 00:12:59 I'm a big bit. And then he finally, I'm also a Miami Dolphins fan. He gets to the dolphins a couple of years ago, but he's completely washed. Yeah. So here's the thing, Dono. Here's the thing that I think we need to acknowledge, right? Possible and probable not the same, right?
Starting point is 00:13:15 Like, is it possible for Megan Estabody and not to get married? Of course, we're in the same age, bragged, you know, I'm a tall guy. I'm taller in her. You know, as you can wear heels. Megan, if you're hearing it. No, my, that's the hero there. But it's possible. Is it probable, ladies and gentlemen, right?
Starting point is 00:13:32 That's always the question that we have to ask ourselves here. And this feels like, trust me, trust me to whoever made that comment, listen, I rock with you. Y'all know I love me some cardinals. Y'all know that. And I know that I've been accused of hating on the cards before. Ask your boy. And I'm not kidding when I say this.
Starting point is 00:13:50 beware the hair. Ask your guy. One of the best pass wrestling league, Aston Zolati, he and I had a conversation about how he passed races and about how I feel about Louisville. And he was taking aback.
Starting point is 00:14:04 And I said, yeah, Louisville felt a lot like home. When I went there, it felt really nice. I'm not going to lie to you. We played a game there, my red shirt freshman year, and I absolutely love it. With that in mind,
Starting point is 00:14:16 you sound like me when the lions used to be terrible and I used to like be watching the last. last week's scenarios where it's like, okay, so if we win, the Vikings lose, the Packers win, the Bears tie, we have a path. Hypothetically, yeah. You know, but it's like saying that when that 28 leg parlay hits, I'm moving out the project.
Starting point is 00:14:39 You know, I hit, let me brag for a second, but I, I hit a 14 team college basketball parlay yesterday. Now, the odds were, it was like three to one odds because I had a lot of big favorites in there. But I've never hit a parley that big. This wasn't one of those lottery ticket parlays, but I did hit a 14 team parley. Well, congratulations. I'm sure you took Mrs. Dono out to have a steak to size of her back or a Salsbury steak. I don't know.
Starting point is 00:15:10 You said it was a pretty low odds. But it was pretty low odds, yeah. I'm sure that hungry man TV dinner made everybody happen. You know what I'm sure. A pound of food. There you go. There you go. I'm sure everybody was happy from that. So, you know, again, hypothetically Louisville can do it. But in reality, not so sure. Not so sure about that one, my friend. All right. So whoever, well, first of all, Kenton, are you, I wonder, so the new college football playoff rankings came out last night. And I was actually kind of surprised they didn't drop Miami further. And I say that because the AP and the, you,
Starting point is 00:15:49 coaches poll both dropped Miami from fourth to 12 college football playoff poll who had Miami fourth last week only dropped them to ninth so I'm kind of wondering is there maybe renewed hope that there actually could be maybe two teams in a college football playoff from the ACC and again I don't want the scenario to play out this way because I'm a Miami guy but maybe Miami and SMU play in the ACC championship it's an epic game maybe SMU maybe SMU you wins in overtime or they went on a last second field goal. Is it possible maybe both teams would get in as one lost teams in the ACC? Or am I just doing this mental gymnastics?
Starting point is 00:16:31 And it's definitely a one bid league. All right, Donald, I'm going to give you three resumes. Okay. Let's play again. Let's play again. This isn't Saul. I'll promise you, we don't have your little one in the back tied up somewhere. We're going to make this thing pretty easy.
Starting point is 00:16:47 Although if you want to keep them occupied for a few hours, it's okay. That's how you know he can pair for real, ladies and gentlemen. But team A, okay, eight and one, no ranked wins. Their best win came against a team that was ranked at one point in time at its highest 21. And then they beat that team by 14. They beat another team by 15 who was never ranked, but people say they're good. And they have a seven point loss to a one loss team. Okay, so that's team A.
Starting point is 00:17:17 Team B, you're looking at no ranked wins, best win being against a four-loss team by a field goal. Their next best win, they blew out a team that is 500 at the moment in danger of missing a bowl game. All right, but who knows? And they have a loss by double digits, okay? And then you have Team C who has beaten a ranked team on. On the road, their next best win was against a team that was undefeated and ranked at that time past week six. And their third best win is against another team that's already bowl eligible. And their only loss was to a team that is undefeated at the moment.
Starting point is 00:18:04 Now, of A, B, and C, which resume sounds the best to you? I'm taking resume C. That's so interesting because Resum A C is number 14 Southern Methodist University. That's so interesting, Donna. No. Who are A and B? A is the mighty, y'all know I love them, the Penn State Nittney Lions, who do the same thing every year. And the sad part of it's Donald, did we not all know Penn State was going to be
Starting point is 00:18:33 the greatest beneficiary of the playoff expanding? Because we all knew they were going to be able to be the third, maybe fourth best team in the conference and still just, oh, we're going to sneak in the playoff by beating all these mid-teams. and getting blown out by the two good teams in the conference. But, and Team B is the Texas Longhorns. I knew Team B was Texas. I knew it.
Starting point is 00:18:57 I knew it. Your best win is against Pavia? Man, stop. Don't. When your best win is a team that lost to Georgia State, what are we doing here? What are we doing here? Like, if Texas's brand was not what it was, even if they still were in the same conference.
Starting point is 00:19:19 I highly doubt that anybody would be giving them this type of love. I highly doubt. So when we talk about the ACC being a one-bid conference, let's not act like this is a zero-sum game where there's not an objective pie that's being split certain ways and certain people are getting bigger and smaller slices based purely on what we think. Not what we've seen, what we think.
Starting point is 00:19:44 Because if we're based on what we've seen, SMU has the better resume. They've been the better team. That's just a bad. So, again, whether or not the ACC is a one-bid league will go to show a lot in terms of credibility for the college football playoff committee. You cannot tell me there's a world where the SEC has four plus teams where people are talking about, I struggle to leave a three-lossed SEC team out. A team that lost a quarter of their football games?
Starting point is 00:20:20 You're struggling to wonder. Yeah. And you're referring to the newest clip of Heather Dinnich on ESPN. Like, is she a lobbyist for the SEC? Like, every week she does this. And here's the crazy part. Do you want to know what university she's an alum of? Indiana!
Starting point is 00:20:40 Your boys will get screwed out of this. Wow. If you lose to Ohio State and they get in, four people. Plus, guess who's on the outside of that bubble looking in? Indiana, yeah. Coach SIG and the boys, they're on the outside. So I think that this is flatly embarrassing. I very seriously think that it's embarrassing.
Starting point is 00:20:59 And we can talk about the ACC's a one-bid league, but when we talk about it that way, I'd like to also mention, so Miami is bad because they play close games in conference to nobody. It's, okay, sure, sure. Right, right. But SMU isn't good because they're beating up on those same nobody. they're whooping the wheels of folks.
Starting point is 00:21:19 SMU is not having a ton of close game. I thought that pit bad against Duke. They should have done better against Duke. I think that's taken some of the respect. Oh, okay. I'm sorry. So a team that's already bowl eligible is the one taking the respect away. Oh, okay.
Starting point is 00:21:33 We can say what we want about Duke. We could talk about their fans. We can talk about the fact that nobody cares about that football. Whatever. At the end of the day, the fans ain't getting them to feel with them boys. At the end of the day, they have shown up and shown out time and time again to the where they earned the right to be seen as a good or at least above the average team. So I think it's very, very disappointing and disheartening to see the way that the ACC is being framed as a one-bid league.
Starting point is 00:21:58 But I want to make one thing clear. If we are going to frame it as a one-bid league, let's also frame who's getting all the big. Let's not just look at it. He doesn't happen. Let's look at who's take. You know what makes me like really, really afraid that the ACC is definitely going to be a one-bid league? Like when I hear like one of the and I think I love his work. I'm not criticizing him when I say this.
Starting point is 00:22:20 But you know, Mark Packer who's on ACCC network who, you know, obviously it's still a bit of an ACC cheerleader. He works for the network. When I see him on ACC PM basically resigning to the idea that yeah, the ACC is probably a one bid league. If Packers throwing in the towel, that's not a good sign. ACC network is under who, Donald? ESPN. So they get the same memo, you think? Interesting.
Starting point is 00:22:48 But here's the thing, though. Here's the thing I also want to acknowledge. We can acknowledge, like, what I think Packer was doing is acknowledging an objective reality of, hey, this is what the most likely outcome is. Not, hey, this is the correct outcome. I have not watched it, so I'm not going to speculate as to what he said or what he didn't. But I think even what Jackson was doing yes, or Jackson was doing on the squad, which will, you know, be out soon.
Starting point is 00:23:14 It's a situation where we discuss it in terms of what should be versus what is, right? And if we're talking about what is, then sure. In reality, the ACC could be a one-bit league. But why should they be is a better question. Why should they be? What are we looking at to say, eh, this team, they just, they don't belong. They don't deserve it. Oh, you know, SMU or Miami, the fact of don't deserve it.
Starting point is 00:23:40 Why not? What have either one of those teams shown you that's so undeserving? And before you say Miami's defense cannot stop a running nose, I'm sorry to tell you, what has Georgia's office shown? What has George's office shown you to say, that's an office I can compete at a playoff level? What have they shown you? Oh, I'm sorry, I almost win against them.
Starting point is 00:24:05 They came back a lot, though. They got really close. They put up a lot of points in that second half. Again, I don't understand why there are always these narratives surrounding the ACC, but the SEC is just the media's darling. Everybody loves them. And remember, Dono, was I not the first person to warn you that the Big Ten should also look out while they're cutting all these deals with the SEC?
Starting point is 00:24:27 Because the SEC is going to look up and realize, we don't need you, Jokers, either. And now, and now, SIG and company are looking up like, well, damn, we got to be in Ohio State or else. because Ohio State can lose that game to Indiana and still get in. Indiana cannot lose Ohio State and still get it. That's just not going on. So, you know, I digress. Well, I want to take a look at the ACC schedule for this weekend when we come back because we do have meaningful games not only for the ACC championship picture,
Starting point is 00:24:55 but teams are fighting for bowl eligibility this time of year. You want to keep it locked. We're not done yet on this brand new episode of Locked on ACC. Thank you so much for making this episode of LockdowneACC, your first listen and your first watch today. All right, Kenton. So I look at games with potential ACC championship implications. I have learned today not to count out Louisville. They're still mathematically in the mix. They're going to need like 10 other teams to lose, but they're still mathematically in the mix.
Starting point is 00:26:21 They need a little bit of witch an hour to go. Yeah, they're 20 and a half point favorites at Stanford this week. SMU, obviously, they are in the most command in their driver's seat right now, because SMU would probably have to lose two games to fall out of it. they're hosting Boston College this week, not with Thomas Castellanos, of course. And you've got 20th ranked Clemson at Pitt. Miami is idle this week. They're on a bye week.
Starting point is 00:26:52 So out of those games with ACC championship implications, do you see any possible upsets there? You know, I feel like if Costellanos was playing, maybe I'd give BC a shot. I'm not sure I do without him. I don't see any upsets here only because. of the style of football pit plays. They are a team that's known to, like, have these slow starts and like, oh, we'll wake up eventually. And I feel like if they kept Clemson and striking distance,
Starting point is 00:27:21 they'd be okay. I'm not sure they can do that. Because we all know when Clemson gets up, they get up. They get rolling. They get confident. It's downhill. No frills. It's going to get ugly in a hurry.
Starting point is 00:27:32 So with that in mind, I don't see any upsets happening this weekend. But hey, what the hell do I know? I've been wrong before. I'll be wrong again. I'm not hitting 14-leg parlays like you, Donald. I'm not the sousier, nowhere of ball that you are, brother. You know what's funny about that? I hit a 14-leg parlay, and in the same night, I lost a two-team parlay.
Starting point is 00:27:53 So, hey, who really knows ball here? Who knows about anything anymore? So games with bowl eligibility on the line. Boston College is one of those, but neither of us see them beating SMU on the road. North Carolina. They're 11.5 point favorites against Wake Forest. UNC is looking for their six win and bowl eligibility. Wake Forest needs to win two out of their final three in order to be bowl eligible.
Starting point is 00:28:22 And Cal, their eight point favorites at home against Syracuse. Syracuse is already bowl eligible. Cal is five and four. So if Cal Kenton pulls it off, they're going to be already a lock to go bowling. So you think we're going to have some teams clinching that bowl eligibility this week? weekend. You know, I wouldn't be shocked to see it. I will say that much. I would not be shocked to see definitely Cal as a team that they're right there. They're right there on the cusp. And as much as I hate to say it, as much as I would love, as much as I would, I would enjoy it so much.
Starting point is 00:28:57 It would, nothing would make my heart happier than to have old William Mack Brown's last game, be him getting his head beating his head beating by by NC State. That would make me so happy. But I think that North Carolina gets it done. They get to a bowl game. They learn them some mid, some, some, some Finway bowl or some quick lane bowl. I think they, they learned them some of that. And that ends up being Mack Brown's last ever game as a college football head coach. Again, I would love, I would love nothing more. Nothing would make my heart smile down. I would get on this show smiling from ear to ear for the rest of the year if that was the case. but, you know, I may not get my wish.
Starting point is 00:29:37 You know what I mean? That's the one wish I'm not going to get. Again, I'm still holding out hope for that date with Megastard. It is there. It's going to happen, Donald. I believe it. I'm rooting for you. You know, I am.
Starting point is 00:29:47 I always root for true love. So I hope you make that happen. Hey, you know, I appreciate you, Donald. Don't worry. You'll be one of my groomsmen for sure. Thank you.
