Starting point is 00:00:00 A team that we've maybe overlooked could be the biggest threat to the Miami Hurricanes in ACC football this year. We're part of the number one locked on podcast. network, your team every day. He is Kenton Gibbs, former NC State defensive linemen and co-host
Starting point is 00:00:42 of Locked-on Wolfpack. I am Alex Dono, host of Locked-on Canes, and today's episode is brought to you by Game Time. Download the Game Time app, create your account and use code locked on for $20 off your first purchase. We'll talk some hoops and some football on this episode. The latest bracketology from ESPN shows you the ACC-alleged locks, the teams that should be in, the teams that could be in. I want to react to that. But on these ACC football power rankings. Now, I certainly agree with who CBS Sports has ranked number one heading into this upcoming football season.
Starting point is 00:01:22 And that's the Miami Hurricanes, who I'm sure are and will be favored to win the conference. Now, Kenton, you told me you're not even sure if Miami should be number one. Give me any disrespect, you got. for me today. Well, I want to make this clear, okay? It's not that I'm not sure Miami should be number one. People are putting them in the consensus. There's no way that Miami misses category. And they're putting them in the same kind of vein that Clemson was last year. Yeah, I don't like that. I think that's wholly wrong. I think that doesn't make sense. When you look at what Clemson had returned from the year before, you could justify,
Starting point is 00:02:03 hey, that team should be the outright frontrunner. And everybody's going to look at me and say, Ken, you saw the season that Clemson had. Are you crazy? And I would say, no, that's exactly why I'm now looking at Miami like, oh, we may be giving them just a smidge too much love. What do I mean by that? Clemson last year was returning their quarterback.
Starting point is 00:02:26 They were returning two top 10 picks in the trenches. They were returning a ton of production out wide at wide receiver. they were returning their starting quarterback and one of the winningest head coaches in college football history who already had multiple ACC championships, multiple national championships. They had all those things laid out before them and somehow it just did not come to be. And now we're looking at Miami losing two prolific first round at latest because I get it, the boy is 25. He may not be a first round pick in Mesidor.
Starting point is 00:03:02 two at latest one of them going to go into top 10 the other one at latest is going to go mid-second round again that's me being very aggressive i highly doubt that mezzador last that long but in a nightmare scenario where people are like ah his age rounds up to 30 i don't want him early that's where he goes right so you lose that you lose big cc you lose bail your left tackle as well you lose all of these things and you say well returning a running back and Tony and some other receivers that's enough you'll lose all of that
Starting point is 00:03:38 and you said well the interior of our defensive line should be good and we bolstered our edge rushers through the portal as well as having our third guy in the rotation returns as well I'm not saying Miami should not be first I'm not saying that if you ask me can the the Mars has got the death being
Starting point is 00:03:53 pointed at earth who do you want I want equal dot no I want Miami as the first team But with that being said, I'm not as sold as everybody else that it's a foregoing conclusion who's going to meet Miami in the in the ACC championship. Yeah, I mean, I'm with you to an extent. You know, obviously when it comes to Miami, I'm very close to it, you know, covering the team on a day-to-day basis. Right. Now, I also, though, I'm with you on something because we go to these, you know, ACC media days every year and we're among the couple hundred people that vote.
Starting point is 00:04:28 you know, for who's going to win the conference and all that. And, you know, we've both been very critical the past few years of just this hive mentality. That everyone seems to kind of pick the favorite and they're unanimous almost every year. And yeah, last year it was Clemson and they didn't come close. The year before that, Florida State coming off of, you know, 13 and 1, really, but they were damn near unanimous in 2024 to win the conference. and they went two and ten. So I definitely think there's room for discourse here. Now, I'm with you.
Starting point is 00:05:03 I think Miami absolutely probably by a country mile has the strongest looking roster in the ACC, despite what they lost, also who they've retained and who they've brought in. I mean, Darian Mensa is the quarterback, I think, can do even better than Carson Beck did this past year. But this should at least be open for national discourse, Kenton, because I'm the first to admit that Miami in over 20 years as a member of the ACC has underachieved in conference. Like even last year, when they got all the way to the national championship game, they did so
Starting point is 00:05:37 without winning the ACC or playing in the ACC championship game. And oftentimes, the hiccup games that Miami has during the season are usually against who? ACC opponents and teams that they're supposed to beat. Miami tends to do better when they're facing the Notre Dame's and the Ohio States. the world than when they're facing the Louisville's and the SMUs of the world. So for that reason, I am definitely open to the possibility that Miami's not just going to run away with the conference. And it's not something I take for granted because Kenton, when Miami first entered the ACC, was 2004. I was in college at the U at that time. I have lived and died even before that,
Starting point is 00:06:19 but every season since, and I've seen these hurricanes, how many times are they supposed to win the conference and they've never done it. So I'm open to anything, but they definitely should. This should be the year that they win the ACC. It should be. But Donno, what if I told you that there was going to be a year where the ACC championship was going to be a seven-win team that lost to Tulane and Virginia? Yeah. It was, what if I told you that that was going to be a real thing that happened, right? What if I told you, Clemson was going to be an all-time letdown and Virginia is going to be one of the teams in the ACC championship? Would you not say, oh, this is Miami's year. That is their year. That is the moment where the, because I don't
Starting point is 00:07:08 think the ACC will be as bad as it was last year. And that's not disrespect to Virginia or due. That's not disrespect to those teams. I don't think that Virginia bought the level of the conference up last year. Virginia's success was not a thing that I looked at and said, Virginia is good. That means that we're all bad. That's not what happened. But what I will say is from last year to this year, we have better coaches. We have a lot more in terms of teams that are going in the right direction.
Starting point is 00:07:37 Last year, we had multiple teams that were floundering and we're like, hey, that team's going to need a new head coach. Last year, we looked at both of the Virginia schools. Hey, they're probably going to need new coaches. One of them goes on to win 11 games. Hey, the other one gets fired. last year we looked at Cala and Stanford. Both of y'all coaches could be gone. Both of their coaches were.
Starting point is 00:07:55 Actually, we knew one would be gone because he was an interim. And the other one, we said, we got an eye on you. We got an eye on you. And surely the eye was rightfully placed there because he's gone. So ultimately, there are lots of changes happening around the ACC to where we retain something like you said about Miami. The same way Miami retains up his best players, the ACC retains some of his best coaches. Locking up Red Lashley, massive, massive deal right there.
Starting point is 00:08:24 So you don't have any teams that are staying steady or going down except maybe a Florida State for the most part. But everybody else you would look at, either they're getting better from bad or mid or they're holding steady at pretty good like a pick. But everybody else is getting better for the most part. Yeah, but it's like better to a certain degree. but I just, and again, this is all on paper. Like we've, you know, like you said,
Starting point is 00:08:51 nobody would have thought Virginia would go as far as they went, nor do, even though they lost five games. But it's like on paper, like, it's hard for me to see anybody right now that's in Miami's wheelhouse. And when we come back, I want to go through the entire CBS power ranking, which has Miami at number one, but we have six other spots to go through. And a team you mentioned is SMU.
Starting point is 00:09:14 Is that actually the team that could be most, hoised to challenge Miami for the ACC crown this year. You want to keep it locked. We're only getting started on this brand new episode of Lockdown ACC. I'm Glea Butler, host of Lockdown Women's Basketball. And this is Mazda's Women's Basketball Snapshot, celebrating the work no highlight reel can ever capture. Number one ranked Yukon dominated Tennessee, 96 to 66,
Starting point is 00:09:42 turning a halftime tie into a historic win and avenging last season's loss by delivering the largest margin in the rivalries. history. AZ Fudd had 27 points and Sarah Strong added 26, as the Huskies remain perfect on the season, reminding everyone why they are the reigning national champions. In the Big Ten, number two, UCLA rolled past number eight, Iowa, 88 to 65, powered by 22 points from Angela Dukalage and a huge advantage in the paint, staking their claim as a national threat. These moments are earned off the clock, those long before the lights ever come on. The sweat, the fakes, the doubt, the scrapes, and coming back for more every time. Mazda puts that same drive into every detail. Wins defined the moment,
Starting point is 00:10:30 putting in the work, that defines you. There's more to a Mazda because there's more to you. Thank you so much for making Locked on ACC your first listen. So, Kenton, let me go through the rest of this really early CBS Sports ACC power ranking for football.
Starting point is 00:11:16 And then we can react to some of these. We mentioned Miami at number one. They've got SMU at number two. Virginia at number three. Of course, with a new starting quarterback. We'll see if it's Eli Holstein or Bo Perbula. Louisville at number four. Like Louisville's always like right there, right? Virginia Tech at number five, which would be a huge rise in James Franklin's first season there. They got NC State at number six, Clemson 7th. Georgia Tech eighth. Number nine, they've got Cal. I think we think that could be a little low. We'll circle back to them. Florida State at number
Starting point is 00:11:52 10, Duke at number 11, they just lost Mensa and Barcate, which stings. North Carolina, 12th, Pittsburgh 13th, Wake Forest at 14, Syracuse at 15, Stanford 16, Boston College at 17. And, you know, I noticed, Kent, I don't know if you feel like SMU at number two, is that too high or too low? I think we forget how close they were last year. I mean, had they just taken care of business against Cal in their final regular season game, they would have been.
Starting point is 00:12:22 the ACC championship game. They controlled their own destiny. They blew it. But they also had a regular season win against Miami, which is, you know, obviously something that they could hang their hat on. And it's why they came that close. And Kevin Jennings is back at quarterback. Like, factor fiction, is SMU the second best team on paper in the conference?
Starting point is 00:12:43 Well, since they've already pissed off hurricane fans once today, let's do it twice. I think they had too many Cains on their roster to win a conference championship. That was the problem. That was the problem. No, I'm joking. I'm joking. But in all seriousness, in all seriousness, I do think that they're probably the second best team because they're the most balanced.
Starting point is 00:13:01 They're returning a quarterback that has been there multiple years, been a started for multiple years, returning a head coach as well. How, and I know that that feels strange to say, but in today's world of college football, you're returning your head coach and your quarterback, three straight years together. That is a big, big deal. On top of that, SMU has always found a. way to be right there. You're absolutely right.
Starting point is 00:13:24 If they don't wet the bed at Cal, when they went down, drove down with, what was it, like 50 seconds left or something like that, take the lead. If they don't wet the bed and allow Cal to come right back down the field and get points of their own, they're going to the ACC Championship. And our ACC championship is a very respectable Virginia Tech versus, I'm sorry, not Virginia Tech. Virginia versus SMU. Again, no disrespect to Duke, but again, it's not great.
Starting point is 00:13:54 How many power four conferences can say a five-win team is our conference champion, right? It feels a little strange, feels a little G6-ish. That's just the reality. So ultimately, I look at this and I say, SMU at number two feels about right. They have a lot of production returning. And they had questions coming in the last year about, man, do they have enough in the stable to be back in conference championship contention? And they did. They were right there.
Starting point is 00:14:21 They were literally one drive. If one drive goes differently for them, they end up in a conference championship. So ultimately, I say the SMU being ranked number two makes a lot of sense. Yeah, I'm fine with SMU at number two. I don't know how I feel about Virginia at number three. I don't know why I just feel like last season was a flash in the pan, and a lot of it was Chandler Morris, who's no longer there. I think number three for UVA, like they're right in front of Louisville.
Starting point is 00:14:51 I just think based on the overall talent level, I would probably, at the very least, I would flip those three and four, if not bump Virginia down a little lower. I agree with you before a different reason. I don't even think that Chairman Morris was Virginia's biggest loss. Jamari Taylor was a worse horse. That young man, if he was even, he was leaving. He earned himself some NFL dollars. You understand?
Starting point is 00:15:14 He earned himself some big boy bucks. He going to play for the shield and do well for himself because of what he did last year. but I do agree that I think Virginia lost a lot that I don't think they quite replenished. I just don't think that they did a good job of replenishing those players. And it felt like that last year was their one shiny moment, but they've got a chance to prove us wrong just like they did last year. Nobody thought the news would be anything last year. So come on, Tony Elliott.
Starting point is 00:15:41 Show us what you got. But for now, Brahm is a proven product. Brom is a proven. And here's how proven of a product Brahm is. Go back in his history and you will see every year. year eight to nine somewhere in there and every year they're going to beat one team that they shouldn't and they're going to have that one loss that leaves you going yeah so forget how to play football what so who did you let coach walls who is the head coach of the women's basketball team lead
Starting point is 00:16:08 practice this week what happened to the original plot of the movie that's they're going to have that game once a year they always have they always have it and i told people last year after after one of their early losses. Everybody was like, oh, that's the game. And I'm like, nope, no, that's not it. That loss is like a, you kind of could see it. You can respect it. There's another one coming where you're just going to say, this is the Louisville team I know. So at Brown, while he does have that one loss every year that's terrible. He's a proven product. I'd move him ahead of Virginia and Tony Elliott. What do you think about the placement of Clemson at 7th, Florida State at 10th? Like I think, I think they're probably spot on with Florida
Starting point is 00:16:50 of state. I think they still have too many issues there. I don't know what, and we talked about, Clemson was like a unanimous number one last year. And now they dropped to seventh. So it's like people have kind of figured out that the magic is not the same there. But is it maybe an overreaction to drop them all the way to seventh? Because they've had, I mean, I don't know how many straight years, six or seven, they've had top 20 recruiting classes. Like Clemson is absolutely talented. I know they'll have a new starting quarterback, you know, not that Clubnik had a great year this past year, but they go from Clubnik to Chris Visina, but I still just think talent for talent.
Starting point is 00:17:29 Clemson probably is too good to be down at number seven, in my opinion. I think they should be top five. I couldn't disagree with you more. My mother, normally we expand your vocabulary on the show, but let me explain, expand your music repertoire here. My mother used to love listening to an old jazz or an old blues legend, rather, and B.B. King. You know what one of his most famous songs was?
Starting point is 00:17:51 The thrill is gone. The thrill is gone. The thrill is gone down there in Clemson, South Carolina. It's unfortunate. It's bad to see. But if you can't get it done with a quarterback that was supposed to go top five if he had the season, everybody thought he was supposed to have. With two defensive linemen that were supposed to be going top 20,
Starting point is 00:18:11 if they had the seasons they were supposed to have. With a Terrell brother out there at corner, with all of those things, you could not. And mind you, I didn't even mention a receiving court. And everybody said, hey, that may be the best receiving room in America. In America. And you're telling me that you barely scraped into bowl eligibility. But this year, I'm supposed to believe all of a sudden that something has changed despite the fact that the quarterback returning for three years, who was supposed to be the guy, couldn't get it done.
Starting point is 00:18:46 I'm now supposed to believe in Vazina. Who, mind you, Dabo said there's still a lot of time to go. And Vazina is not the guaranteed starter. That's true. He's just put himself in pole position in the race. Donald, I don't know about you, but if you were a betting man and you were betting on NASCAR and they let you bet the guy in the pole position or the field, what would you take just for the smart money every time?
Starting point is 00:19:11 I don't know, probably the field. The field. Okay. So he's not saying this is the guy. There's no way he loses this spot. He's saying he's in pole position. Yeah. Interesting.
Starting point is 00:19:22 I think Clemson's right where they need to be. The thrill is gone. Wow. And it's, you may be right. I don't know. Maybe it's just the mystique because like when I look at Miami's upcoming schedule and like I still, I look at having to play Clemson on the road,
Starting point is 00:19:37 maybe it shouldn't still mean something because they struggled to beat, who was it that almost beat them there? Troy. last year. Troy. He struggled to beat Troy at home, but I still look at going to Death Valley is like, oh, that's going to be difficult. I don't know. Maybe I'm wrong there. Now, one thing, on this CBS sports power ranking, they've got Cal down at number nine, which I think they're going to be sleepy kind of good this year. There's a lot of, there's a lot of justified hype for their new head coach,
Starting point is 00:20:09 Tosh LaPoy. The fact that they not only keep JKS there is, their quarterback, but they also got him some good receivers in the portal. I think three of their top five offensive additions in the number 14 transfer portal class in America, by the way, three of the top five additions were weapons for J.K.S. to throw the football too. So it's like, I don't think they're winning the conference because I don't know if they're strong enough at the line of scrimmage, but I think they're going to be better than ninth best in the ACC this year with JKS at QB. Yeah, Tosh Lepoy is a cow bear through and through. When people think about Cal, although Stanford is the school that gets the whole
Starting point is 00:20:47 elitist tag, if you talk nationally about Cal, people know. That's one of the most elite academic institutions in America. And LaPoy is not only a golden bear. He also graduated from De LaSalle High School out there in California, which is known nationally worldwide. If you know high school football, you know them as the team that had that hunted something game Winstreet or whatever it was. So this is a situation where they've got a guy that understands their culture, understands how they like to do things, bought in a ton of talent in the transfer portal, and kept JKS. You talk about keeping guys is one of the most important things, keeping QB1, especially when he can fling that thing like JKS can.
Starting point is 00:21:30 That is a massive deal. So I do think that Kyle is going to be a lot better than 9th. With that being said, I understand the thought of 9th because you're kind of asking yourself, So we are under New Year, under a first head, under a not just a first year head coach, a first time ever head coach. LaPoy has never been a head coach anywhere else. So you're expecting the growing pains. I can see the vision of why you would think that they would finish night. I can honestly see the vision.
Starting point is 00:22:01 Coming up next in the latest ESPN Bracketology, five ACC basketball teams are considered to be locks. and there's others with some work to do if the ACC is going to try to get eight, nine into the tournament after only having four in last year. You want to keep it locked right here. We're not done yet on this brand new episode of Locked on ACC. Guys, hiring isn't just about finding someone willing to take the job. Starting point is 00:24:35 Thank you for making Locked on ACC your first listen. For your next listen, check out our other shows, Kenton Gibbs and Gris and Grimms. Grayson Boone, do a great job on Locked-on Wolfpack. I host Locked-on Cains. And by the way, Kenton, on the latest bubble watch, NC State is not considered quite a lock, but they are considered in the next category of should-be-in. NC State and SMU are should-be-ins.
Starting point is 00:25:00 My Miami Hurricanes are in there with work to do. I can thank Miami's loss to Cal last week at home for being what put them in the work-to-do category instead of the should be in category. But what's the feeling in Raleigh, Kenton, for NC State probably being in at this moment if the tournament were to start today? You know, this is a situation where Will Wade,
Starting point is 00:25:25 he said two things would be the expectation in terms of year one. He said top four in the ACC and a tournament bid. Now, you just said that they're in the should be in category, right? Should be in. Yeah. Should be in. And they are eight and two in conference, top four in the conference right now, tied for third with UVA, who they have to play again, by the way.
Starting point is 00:25:49 Yeah. The filling in Raleigh is good. The vibes are high. After stealing one in Dallas, and I'm going to tell you, shout out to SMU basketball. Those boys can shoot the lights out. I have talked about their inability to defend multiple times, but when you can shoot like that, who gives a damn whether or not you shuffle the public? track meets every time.
Starting point is 00:26:10 Yeah. And if Boopi Miller is the one with the baton, I feel good if I'm SMU. I feel all right. He's a heck of a player. But the vibes in Raleigh are very high right now because objectively speaking, when you see a game where SMU shoots 45% or so from deep, right, and they're getting everything. It's not, I watch the game.
Starting point is 00:26:31 You would look at the stats and say, oh, man, they must have been fined lots of open shots. One of their guards hit a contested double-staffed. back over a center. What do you do with that? Yeah. What do you do? When a guy does that, that's, if you were to tell every coach in college basketball, I'm going to force the opposing team into a step back over a player that is four inches taller than your player with eight seconds left in the shot clock. They say, I love that. I'll take that every day of the week. Their guys hit multiple of those. They're a fantastic team. With that being said, when NC State came away with that win, I mean, it's solidified.
Starting point is 00:27:08 what Will Wade was talking about when he said, we're right through on the precipice. We just need to break that seal of winning these big games. And they did so at Clemson. And in Clemson, their first and only conference loss, first loss at home in, I believe, nine or ten games or so. They did that at Clemson and have not lost since then. I'm not saying they're going to finish the season undefeated from that Clemson
Starting point is 00:27:29 game forward, but I'm saying that they're riding the wave of that momentum into what is right now standing out a five-game win streak. So ultimately the vibes are high. The vibes are very high. Yeah, in Miami, the vibes are mixed to high. It's like, you know, the unfortunate bad recency bias is within the last two weeks, Miami's got a bad home loss against Cal and a worse home loss against Florida State. You know, they had good wins over Syracuse and Stanford in between.
Starting point is 00:27:58 And like, if you zoom out, you know, with an entirely, entirely new roster and a first-time head coach in Jay Lucas, You know, the team is fifth in the ACC with a conference record of, I believe, six and three. I know they, yeah, six and three in the ACC, 17 and five overall. They just don't have enough quality wins, but they do have some opportunities for those down the road. Just things like defense, which is kind of important, and free throw shooting, which is puzzlingly bad, have kind of failed them in some of these close games. But that's why those recent losses to Florida State and DeKal are why Miami is considered with work to do along with Cal and Virginia Tech. I mentioned the teams that should be in are Kenton's NC State Wolfpack and the SMU Mustangs.
Starting point is 00:28:47 Now the five quote unquote locks right now, Kenton, are Duke, Virginia, Louisville, North Carolina, and Clemson. So, I mean, you still, you feel good knowing that there's five alleged locks because that's more teams than the ACC got into the tournament last year. Absolutely. They currently, Bracketology currently projects the ACC to get eight teams in. I think last week it was at nine or early last week it was. So, you know, hopefully we can keep it around that number, Ken, because I would love to see eight or nine teams in the tournament. It'll make our job a lot more fun on Locked on ACC when March Madness begins. Oh, a million percent.
Starting point is 00:29:24 A million percent. And in terms of the teams in that work to do category and all that, all of us got work to do. Let's be very honest, right? Even Duke, who is a lot to get in, if they were to be a first round exit, people would start looking at Shire like, all right, okay. Where's our natty? Where's our natty, brother? You know, even with Will Wade at NC State, if they were to have a tragic falling, NC State has the second toughest schedule for the rest of the way. If they were to have a very tough showing on the rest of the way out,
Starting point is 00:29:55 nobody's going to be happy with that in Raleigh. And Huber Davis, his seat is hotter than fish grease over there in Chapel Hill, even though they're in the positive right now. So all of the teams have work to do. Even Miami, a team that was not expected to be much this year, that has been much better played above their heads for a lot of it. It kind of feels like Miami's coming back down to earth due to a lot. due to a lack of depth a little bit.
Starting point is 00:30:21 And that's kind of why you're seeing certain things go awry towards the later part of the season. But the reality is if there are to be more teams in the tournament, I mean, we're already at that point we're going to have more than last year. But if we are to get to that nine number, the teams at the bottom need to pull off some upsets. We need to see some big time upsets. And a lot of these teams have the opportunities to do so. but they've got to make it happen today. You don't have time anymore. We're not at that point in the season where it's like,
Starting point is 00:30:53 oh, well, you can neander a little bit. You can figure yourself out if you don't know who you are by now, if you are not prepared to get big upsets today, right now, this week, next week. If you're not there, it's pretty much over for you. Yeah, no, well, well, we'll keep tracking bracketology in the upcoming games because this is obviously a big stretch coming up here, getting to the home stretch of the regular season. Make sure you check out Kenton and his co-host,
