Whether it was court storming upsets or top plays, the ACC had all of it from the weekend starting through Monday.
We'll talk about the close one that was against Miami-U-N-C, the one that got a little rowdy in Winston-Salem
and a little bit in between with Forbes and Lunardi here on Lockedon ACC.
You are Locked-on ACC, your daily podcast on the Atlantic Coast Conference, part of the Locked-on Podcast Network.

It has been a rocky February between work schedules, between internet loss,
and between AT&T trying to play us with a $5 coupon.
We are so glad to be back and talking through some sports with you.
Kenton, how are you feeling?
I'm feeling great as always.
Any down above six feet above ground, we all right.
You know what I mean?
And I stand taller than six feet.
So I am, in fact, okay today.
All right.
Today's episode is brought to you by our friends at Fandhuel.

All right.
There's been a lot going on around the ACC.
You know, Kenton, as soon as we leave, it gets rowdy.
That's typically how it goes.
And that certainly has been the case for ACC hoops.
We've had some losses on the football side.
Will they get into the Big Ten or not conversations that we'll have throughout this week?
But as we stand now, there's a part of a game where a team upsets the other that has really become sort of this staple to programs and, you know, who basically storms better.
People rush to Franklin Street.
People rush after beating a top 10 program or, you know,
haven't been their rival in a couple years and finally get, you know,
the chance to enjoy it and celebrate.
But it seems to me that it might be getting out of hand.
Safety issues are starting to arise more and more.
And people are really piping up about the need for court storming.
Kenton, as much as we love our fellow whatever insert team,
how we feel about court storming once, you know, a big matchup is given.
to your fandom or you're given to you the program that you love so much.
Kyle Filipowski, dramatic.
John Shire, dramatic.
Caitlin Clark, dramatic.
But they're right.
Dramatic in the sense of what?
They all milked it.
They all milked it.
Like they all milked it and took it to a place that's just like, okay, we're going
really far with this thing.
Sure.
But with that being said, they are right.
They are right.
You know what I mean?
Like they are dramatic, but they are right.
Like those two things exist in harmony in this one.
And also us leaving and all this stuff happening.
It's like you go to school for 100 days straight.
Nothing happens.
But that one day that you miss, all of a sudden it was three fights and you crushed
them, wrote you a letter and all that.
I don't wait until we went missing a do-all list.
But any of you, all those folks are dramatic.
But course, stormy needs to stop.
rushing the field needs to stop.
as it exists right now to where people are doing it when there's either a still time on
a clock or B teams have had literally zero time to vacate the area.
Like we're creating a very dangerous situation for these athletes.
And while I don't think that the full potential or even a quarter of the potential
that danger was met in this situation or any other situation that we've seen this year,
it absolutely is introducing an uncontrollable stimuli that players,
and coaches should not be subjected to.
So sure.
Safety issues, number one, 100% hear you.
Had it happened to any other program,
had it happened to any other woman basketball player
that we are seeing for us in this year of our Lord's Savior, 2024.
Not a peep, not a murmur.
It would have gone right on about our way.
We would have talked about it.
We would have seen the celebrations,
and we would have been fine.
But of course it happened to Duke.
Of course it happened to Kyle Filipowski.
Of course John Shire has to be the one.
Because let me tell you, had that been a coach K-led Duke program where he got trampled, baby.
Course-soring with an official statement from NCAA, Jim Phillips, and all the like.
They would have been no more course-raming across the table.
Well, that's the thing.
I think we are heading there.
I think that this moment is one where we're.
heading there. And it's, to me, I think the only way to stop this, I mean, there's already a
rule in place that if you storm the court with Tom left on the clock is two shots and possession
for that team. It was not enforced. Have you seen it? Has it seen it. The rule is not in the
room with us now. I will admit that. But with that being said, I think the biggest thing that they can
do, I mean, and I hate to be this guy, I really do, but you need to find the ever
living crap out of these schools.
You need to make it very clear, hey, listen, upsets are part of this thing, but you at least
need to grant the away teams 10 to 15 seconds to exit.
I really would like a 30 second buffer potentially, but I mean, it's, I think there needs to
be some buffer for players to get off the court, get off the field, whatever the case
may be, so the fans can celebrate with their players, because again, it creates too many
dangerous situations.
Now, that sounds cute, but you think a Wake Forest program can't find the money to pay that fine?
So here's the deal, right?
Oh, okay.
I just want to make sure.
Nope.
Okay.
But that's why I said find the crap out of them.
Yes, it is not.
I don't want no cute.
If you start finding a mill, two mill per, oh, you better believe.
How many times are they upsetting people?
Let's keep it a band.
How many top 10 teams are in the ACC where it was a really good worth of?
store. So watch this. This is what I would do if I was D.C. I'd say, this is for all the
schools so nobody can say, hey, this school ruined it for us or that school ruined it. This is for
everybody. The first time we're going to set a threshold of four to five a year. I don't care
who gets them. How do they get them as a conference. If we reach four to five, the fine doubles.
So if you're the 16 to do it, congratulations. You just had to pay twice with number five and number
before I had to pay.
If you want to pay that game, it's going to be $1.5 million, $1.5 million.
The 16 to do it, congratulations.
You just got three men.
The 17, 18, 19 to do it.
Congratulations, y'all got three.
Y'all want to go beyond that?
Y' want to keep trying me?
Oh, okay.
It's like when your parents put you on punishment for talking back and you keep doing it
or your brother and sister say something funny, they think it's funny.
Now, everybody on punishment for it.
That's what I would do if I was in conflict.
I say, listen, stop storming these courts.
Stop storming the field.
Now, I do think it's ironic coming from Duke,
seeing it's how they stormed the field for the,
first football game after they beat Clemson.
But the reality is...
Get your elbows up.
The reality is...
Get your elbows up.
All I'm saying is this.
It is unsafe.
And again, the ACC and the NCAA as a whole
need to find a way to create
a safer environment. Because while we would
like to believe that everybody is sane and
normal and reasonable, fan is short for what,
Candace? Fanatic.
Fanatic. And people who are acting fanatic.
are not acting reasonably,
or not acting in the best interest of keeping people safe.
And granted, we could be preparing for a worst case scenario,
but I'd rather prepare for it and not have it happen
than wait until a player gets punched
or a player punches somebody or something like that.
I said your elbows up for a reason you think them jokes ain't done it before.
Like, first of all, let's be serious.
Two, Jim Phillips ain't spoke up for nothing else,
but he sure knew how to write a letter real quick for that moment.
I'm just saying.
Get the head.
Can you pipe up and get some of our team in the damn tournament
since you want to be piping up so bad?
Don't cherry pick.
When you want to come to the rescue now, Jimmy P.
Ladies and gentlemen, the jury, you can tell we got a Carolina grader
basketball season on this show because she ain't cutting Duke no slack.
There ain't no slack on that road.
Did that boy kick his leg out?
Now listen.
I don't.
Here's the thing.
Did he get pushed in the back?
Absolutely.
But then he also extended his leg.
It was giving Grace now.
And I'm just saying.
Here's the thing.
And here's the thing.
Here's the thing.
That's why I said.
I saw his extend his arms too.
Was it dramatic?
Yes.
Did he possibly take a dive?
Possibly.
Was it possibly initiated to contact?
Possibly.
I don't want to speculate because I saw it from multiple angles.
You know, part of me is like, no, that's just a natural reaction.
Part of me is like, it didn't look a little weird.
It did look a little weird.
But then it's like he's seven feet and 200 pounds.
Everything he does looks a little weird.
You know what I mean?
so. So I'm, oh, he's 250 listed at 250. That boy is 2.20 maybe with wet bricks in his pocket.
But the reality is I'm sitting here and I'm saying to myself, yes, this is all dramatic.
But how far do we want fans to be able to go? What has to happen before we create safety measures here?
Right. Final thought, though. Yes, final thought. As much as we want to create safety measures
to do all the things, do you know how much money that these ushers get paid per game?
Like what? 10 to 15.
$15 depending on the venue, right?
If that may be minimum wage.
Minimum wage.
And that's why I said.
Hush, hush.
You don't want Ms. Bertha.
You want Mr. Larry, Mr. Leroy.
It's over here.
And Debo, very excited, adrenaline having fans,
tweens.
What's the word?
I'm looking for people in their 20s?
All those things.
You want to have them be like,
hey, hey, hey, don't do.
But that's why I said.
Gratry.
Get out my way.
But that's why I said.
I'm going to go getting hit replacement because y'all want to play.
Okay, y'all don't make me enough of my part-time job.
I'm sorry.
And that's why the owners has to be put on the university as a whole structurally and not on those ushers.
That is, you can't put the, listen, you and I both know, right?
The most fit bouncer is like the, hey, that guy probably used to play their type guy.
Those folks still, if you had 20 of them, they're not stopping.
how many people can
fit into the largest field.
They blamed
Wake Forest's security staff.
And that's what I'm saying.
You can blame Wake Forest as a university
for not keeping the proper.
And you know what?
Let me let this be my actual last thought on this.
Please.
It's a shame that this took away
from the actual game that occurred.
Wait just cemented they sell.
They said, we're going to dip a toe in,
take it right back in terms of being in the tournament.
We're going to put a little leg, yeah, take it right back.
They sat, they showed their whole ass and got in the tournament,
and we're going to sit here and talk about whether or not Philipowski was
tripped and whether or not he'd be dramatic, whether or not he put.
It's a shame.
Forbes did his big one, because I know you love to say somebody did they big one.
Well, Forbes actually did do his big one in this game,
and we sit up here and talk about whether or not he tripped.
Now, it's a shame.
It's a shame that this took away from the game.
But a very...
Whose team is showing because your end?
C. Statside is starting to show a little bit. Please and thank you. All right, we've got to talk a little bit more, but Forbes is definitely a hot topic of conversation. Let's get to him in a second. But first, get buckets with your first bet on Band Dual America's number one sports book. Because right now, new customers get $150 in bonus bets with any winning $5 bet. That's $150 if your bet wins.
bet on all your favorite NBA players and teams with quick bets to the live same game parlay's
exclusive props and more just visit fandul.com slash locked on and shoot your shot vanduil is the
official partner of the NBA so kentine and i talking through all that happened and keeps happening
around the acc and forbes and lunardi certainly are you know a conversation that should be had
because Coach Forbes felt away about Lunardi's sort of angst towards the ACC when talking about the recent guys that won conference MVP.
And he made some great points if you haven't.
Look it up on Twitter just about, you know, the stock of play, the state of play that really is our conference.
You know, Powell Ben-Cara, he mentioned hadn't, didn't win MVP, but clearly the number one pick in the draft, right?
You had Moses Fright, you had Alondez Williams, a lot of these guys who are either
two-way players or, you know, had various degrees of going to the league or not going to the
league, but either way it goes, I don't know when this picture got painted that the men's
ACC is not great, but it's getting sort of out of hand.
And I completely agree with him on that one.
And to your point, as you mentioned, a lot got taken away from the actual game because of
the court-storming situation.
But Wake Forest definitely allowed themselves to be first, last four in when it comes to
the NCAA tournament.
Yeah, for sure.
and Forbes was right.
Lennardi has in terms of actually picking the field of 174 professionals measure,
the man finished 94th or 98th, one of the two.
Joey, you're below average.
Whoever is set in the curve, you're falling way the heck behind.
Right.
I'm sorry to tell you, Mr. Lennardi, but most of us,
if we finish that rank there at doing our job,
I don't know if you know, there's been a lot of layoffs lately.
It's been a lot of, hey, it's not us.
You know, it's not you.
It's just the market forces, you know, folks who get to drive in an invisible car.
You know, whenever your HR is called in the meeting and the visible car they drove,
they're going to slide you that little cobra shirt.
You're getting fired, buddy.
That's what happens to the average person that's that bad at their job.
So Forbes was absolutely within his rights to call it out.
And I'm glad to force pop the upset right after doing so because, again, to me, it doesn't make sense.
I believe Lenardi's wording was the ACC needs to recruit better.
How much better can you recruit than the number one pick in the NBA draft?
Right.
Multiple number one picks have been out of the ACC in recent memory.
How much better can you recruit?
Well, oh, I'm sorry, it's top heavy and that's one player.
Okay, how much better can teams perform than what the ACC has done in the tournament as of late?
Right.
For every one ACC team that's let you down in the tournament, I can name four or five that you looked up and said,
wait a minute, they're still in a tournament.
Right.
Yeah.
They're about to hang themselves a banner already.
So I don't understand it.
I get that the metrics are the metrics, and metrics are much like the universe, right?
Code, indifferent, uncaring to your struggle.
I understand that.
But with that being said, if the metrics are not matching up with the eye test,
if the eye test is consistently defying the metrics,
if the metrics say the ACC is bad,
but then the ACC goes up in that tournament
and show they behind like a little kid with the silver teeth.
Every time, every time that you got to give them their respect.
You know, little Dante is definitely trying his best.
Let me tell you something.
Them silver teeth go across race.
I don't care of his little.
Dante, little Ethan, little Julio.
If you see them silver tea, that's a demon.
That's a menace.
Julio is crazy.
I'm just saying.
Not, I'm not doing that today.
Yes, I agree that the ACC is getting this really weird, bad rep, but consistently
turning out, you know, eye quality guys, not just in the league and not just in
this tournament, but beyond.
And it's somehow how many different ways till Sunday did we have to fight for the name?
That's why, again, I get on.
Jimmy P because you do have to
politic this thing. There are people
that get opportunities and lanes
a little bit more than others simply because
of who's in the room. And I think that
we'd be lying to ourselves if we just
depended on metrics and not just a little bit of
hey, my friend tried their best. So let's
give them a chance.
The Mac has embarrassed us time
and time again. I don't know why we're still acting as
a fair legitimate conference. Like it's
just, it's maddening, I'd say.
I'm going to tell you this, okay?
I'm not a musical guy, but they're
was something to be said on Hamilton when they said, I want to be in the room where it happens.
I want to be there.
I want to be in the room where these selections are happening so I can see exactly what's going
into these processes.
Because in watching these games play out, and watching the early season matchups, and watching
these teams play against you.
I understand that Louisville is dragging the net down.
I get it.
The Kenny Payne error is hurting the conference.
Absolutely.
Hey, you got me.
You got me.
I have no defense.
that. But with that being said, that's one team. That is one team. Everybody else in the
conference, for the most part, is competitive. They are competitive constantly. We are about
to talk about a Miami team that everybody says is listless and lifeless, and yet they took a team
that is potentially and probably going to be favored in the ACC tournament to, I mean,
if this is a championship bomb. They were down some of their best. And that's what I'm saying. If this is
a championship bump, they took them all 12 rounds.
short-handed. Blow-for-blow
toe-to-toe. Needed a herculean
effort from their star to come
out with this win. And here's the other thing, and I'm going to leave it
right here. When Kansas
is upset
by one of the Big 12 bottom feeders, what a competitive
conference. Oh, what
a scrappy group.
What a tough, you know,
that group there, the Big 12th, toughest
nails. When North Carolina
is upset, when Duke is upset,
You see how even the top is bad in that conference?
It's crazy.
You break out the Fabriz, because it stinks in here.
Stop it. Stop it.
I 100% agree there.
I also think, you know, it has to do with not only the Jim Philis of the world, but the announcers.
Like, can we just talk about for 60 seconds coaches who happened to be black?
Because I swear for Lord, if I ever see the network that is supposed to be elevating us,
call coaches who happen to be black a thing.
I promise you I'm calling,
I'm adding the ACC myself.
Of all months.
I'm falling ESPN and I'm going to light them on fire.
Of all?
In Black History Month.
In Black History Month, coaches who happened to be black, baby.
The person that had to lead the conversation was Black.
Corey Alexander.
That's what made it most maddening.
because Corey, in your own time,
you were giving Hubey Davis
on the press conference.
That's what you were giving me, right?
Like, hopefully we can get to a place
where we don't even have to ignore.
Shut up.
Shut up.
I understand the sentiment,
but even in a moment like that,
even in a moment like that,
you have to.
But you got to point out
that it's stupid and dumb in that moment.
You have to point out that graphic
in and of itself.
Poor representation.
of the conference. Very poor.
It's not poor representation of the conference.
It's a poor representation of the production.
It's a poor representation of who decided to let that roll out.
It's a poor representation of the network as a whole.
But whose network is that again?
What conference is that network represent?
ESPN.
But what conference in particular is that branch of ESPN represents?
I'm dumb.
Don't do that.
It's the ACC network.
Whether we want to talk about it or not.
The same way the people are in our conference talking about
They thought they had something.
They thought, oh, because they have the most black coaches,
we feel like we have to say something during Black History Month.
So let's figure out how we can say it.
But because we have certain coaches who don't want that to be their stateful person who goes to Chapel Hill,
we need to make sure we try and fine-tune this thing.
So they feel hush.
And that's what I mean in terms of it's a shame because the same way that people say like,
oh, Candice and Kenner are getting paid by Jim Phillips.
Again, if we are, our check missing a zero or two.
I mean, like Jimmy, whip it up.
But it's literally that, right?
We act as bearers of the conference every time we do this show.
Every time we do this show, regardless of if we're tired, if we hungry, whatever we got going on,
when we get in front of this camera, we are bears of the ACC.
The ACC network, we're the bearers of the ACC when they put out coaches who happen to be back.
And it's a very disappointing moment.
I would have sat there as a play-by-play analyst and said, I'm not.
reading this and y'all can kiss my ass. That's probably why I'm not on the network. That's
probably why I'm not play-by-play announcer. But I promise you, had they said, I'm like, you can kiss
my ass. Excuse me, Sally in the booth. Let me tell you something. I'm not saying that stupid.
Thank you so much. All right. And back to you, Jimmy, John, Tyler, whoever was on the next
thing. I'm not saying that. Crazy. Absolute foolishness. But what was also foolish
talking about Chapel Hill, because this happened during the North Carolina, Virginia,
game. There was North Carolina Miami game where RJ Davis had to put up a Herculian effort
as Kenton mentioned. 41 points. Dean Smith Center record in order to get past Miami with
which they almost tricked that one off. That's the most frustrating part. If I got 41 points
and my teammates did not help us solidify the way by playing a halfway good defense. Oh,
everybody's hell on that line. Come on. Oh, he went off of 42. He went off of 40. Excuse me. Let me give him
that one little free throw.
Give him, give me, he worked for the free throws.
He worked for the free.
It's telling the line.
Everybody.
Don't even take out your jersey.
But you know what?
And here's what I'll say about that, right?
First of all, credit to RJ Davis because while I often joke about him being a free throw
merchant and all that, this was a game where he did it from the field.
He legitimately put the team on his back.
Every time they needed a big bucket, it seemed like he was coming up with it.
They knew where the offense was going and who it was.
going through, he just continued, continue to persist.
42 out of your 75 points is insane.
Yeah, but, but have we not talked about the fact that North Carolina
struggles to score outside of RJ?
Have we not talked about that?
Have we not talked about the fact?
Oh no, Mr. Double, man.
Oh, no, Mr. Double, I've been off the Baycock bandwagon.
I've been off the Baycott bandwagon.
Have I, have I not?
Have I, oh, wait, wait.
You have been riding that Bay God trade for quite some time.
Pull up. See, I wish I could throw the
challenge flag on you right now because the last
thing I said about Baycott, the fans was mad
at me because I said he
cannot, he has not proven that
he will consistently be the guy you can go
to in big games and in big moments.
He could take over the game.
It was this one. See, see how she did me.
I must not have been the co-hosts
because there ain't no way you said that.
I know you. I know you. You just like Jeremy
from Love is Blind. See, that's the problem with y'all
folks from North Carolina. That's the problem right there.
He was gaslighted just like
you try to gaslight me. I know for a fact,
I said on this show here.
All these episodes we did this month, I promise you didn't say it.
No, not in the six episodes this month,
but I know for a fact when we were talking about
players performing at big games, I said,
I have not seen him take over
on both sides of the court
to get the job done.
I have said that. I have said that.
I absolutely have.
You're not going to play with me.
Don't worry.
Don't worry.
Don't worry.
Don't worry.
Don't worry.
I'm coming with receipts.
I'm going to come with receipts after we finished recording the show.
But with that being said, with that.
Oh, no.
All I would do is look through the comments because, again, they talked about me like I was the lowest of the low.
They talked about me like I said something about their mama.
I said, what?
What the hell?
I'm just trying to tell you what I've seen.
And Candid, can I ask you a question?
Can I ask you a question?
You always do.
Let's just say.
Let's just say.
say for kicks and giggles that I did say that. Let's just take for granted that I did say that.
Uh-huh. Yeah. Would this game not further that point for me?
I've been out of the bank. I said when the man couldn't find a jumper, I was all set,
but that was over the summer when he was on that damn show. What was that show? What was that
Netflix? Out of out of baseball. But that, but that's what I'm saying. I said he could not
perform in the big moments when he needed to step open.
It was winning time.
He could not take over games.
Now, if I had said that, which I did, but we're going to pretend like Kansas is right.
And I'm great.
My CTE ain't knocking up right now.
I know with my CTE get backing up, this ain't the moment.
But if he could take over a game and be the guy, RJ wouldn't have to get 42.
But RJ did.
And I'll tell you what, to me, this bodes both well and poorly for this team.
It's a, it's a catch 22 because it's great.
season, hell, yeah, it's terrible.
Like, Format, you can't go cold like that, Buki.
I'm sorry.
You cannot go cold like that.
It's great to have a guy who can produce at the level of an R.J. Davis,
but you also are stuck kind of looking there and saying,
this team is supposed to be the scoring can come from anywhere.
And it's not.
It can come from one and a half guys right now.
And that's, you know, RJ Davis and Armando, if it ain't a big game.
And that's not okay.
Yikes.
All right. Well, all I know is that they're supposed to be at top of the ACC.
We're trying to uplift the ACC, and we're going to have to find somehow, some way,
a couple other teams to get us into the tournament.
So if it's not just Carolina, it's not just Duke.
Like Forrest is in this bad boy.
Clemson's still hanging on to this thing.
Any other people that you could make a case for towards the end of this?
Not at the moment, but there are teams who can make cases for themselves.
There are multiple teams that.
I can win some ball games down the stretch
to at least make the conversation.
Yeah, oh, Virginia is definitely in that range
to where I would say,
I would say that they'd be in my last four.
Absolutely.
Okay.
They've got to know how,
they got to put some points in the basket.
Yeah, they got to fill it up.
I mean, that's always been Virginia's problem.
It's never been the defensive end of the court.
It's always been Kenya.
If they don't get in the tournament,
are we over been it yet or what?
No, no, absolutely not.
You don't get over been in.
You don't get over a national chance.

That's crazy.

listen, Boo Corrigan, pick up the phone, baby.
I know you're home, baby.
You better, hey, Tony, how you doing?

You ain't even got to move that far.
Right down from North Carolina, right down for Virginia, North Carolina.
You know, some people make that commute.
every day, Tony.
See people barely stay for the office that they got now.
You think they're saying for 20 points?
They've seen it.
Can I ask you something?

Has the office that we've been producing before?
Has that given the national championship banner?
Has that given any final four banner?

How many other coaches got national championships
are they built in the ACCC right now?
I mean, right now, he currently has more championships
than my coach and your coach can buy.
At least my coach has been into the national championship most recently.
I agree, but he got more championships to both.
He has an assistant on the national championship.
Oh, now we talk about assistant.
the national
tournament.
Sometimes they go harder
than the actual head coach
but I digress.

It's been a quick 30.
Let us know how you feel
about court storming.
We love to know
what you feel about Lenardi.

And if you feel like North Carolina

away from having a see you later,

and NCAA tournament.
Add those conversations with yourselves.
Report back to the news.
And we'll catch you tomorrow.
