What a finish in Chapel Hill on Saturday.
I know Kenton wasn't delighted to see it,
but most everyone else was thrilled to see Duke go down at the buzzer.
You are Locked-on ACCC, your daily podcast on the Atlantic Coast Conference.
Part of the Locked-on Podcast Network, your team every day.
It's what college basketball is all about.
One of the best rivalries in the sport, arguably the best,
and it comes down to a buzzer beating three-pointer by Seth Trimble
and a big 9-0 scoring run to finish the game for Carolina.
Thank you so much to the everydayers for making Lockdown ACC your first listen.
We're available free wherever you get your podcast.
Free on YouTube.
We're part of the number one Lockdown Podcast Network, your team every day.
He is Kenton Gibbs, former NC State defensive linemen and co-host of Lockdown Wolfpack.
I am Alex Dono, host of Lockdown Keynes, and today's episode is brought to you by Fanduel.
The winter games are on, and there's no better way to follow them than with a bet on Fandual.
Fan duel, play your game.
We're going to talk on this loaded episode about the ACC football team most likely to have a drop-off next year.
Kenton's going to try to convince me why it's Miami.
Spoiler alert, it's not going to be Miami.
We're going to talk about the ACC basketball landscape, but let's talk Carolina against Duke,
and who better to break that down with?
Now, we brought on the guy from the winning side, and that is,
Isaac. Take that, JJ. Take that JJ, Jackson.
Co-hosts not only of Locked on College Basketball, but the host of Locked on Tar Heels.
What an absolute thrill Saturday in Carolina. So first, Isaac, let's talk about the game.
North Carolina down most of the way. At what point did you believe the comeback was in the works
and talk about that finish? Donno, when you say Carolina was down most of the way, let's be
specific. They were trailing for 39 minutes, 59.6 seconds. They led.
They were down all the way. Literally, the only, the first and only lead they took in this
basketball game was when Seth Trimbles three rifled through the net with four tenths of a second
left to go. It's crazy. You know, first of all, I want to start off by saying,
those Tar Heels are some mean guys, okay? You know,
I had to get the Shire family out of there unharmed myself
because they said that they were throwing them blows over there in the deed,
though.
But no, in all seriousness,
what led to that closeout run that 9-0 down the stretch?
Because like you said, this was not a game that Duke led.
This was a game that Duke, quite frankly, controlled.
Exactly.
Basically the entire way.
So what led to that last crucial.
two and a half, three minutes or so where it was just like nothing could fall for Duke and the
basket was wide as the ocean for Carolina. KG, a lot of it was Caleb Wilson had kept
Carolina afloat in the first half while everyone else did nothing. He scored 17 of Carolina's
29 first half points. And then in the second half, it was kind of both sides of the court.
Honestly, Carolina buckled down defensively, held Duke to like much lower percentages,
his field goal from two and from three,
while Carolina up to the ante on their own offensive side of things,
worked their way back into the game,
kept, got it tight down the stretch,
but then Duke's final bucket came with two minutes and 51 seconds left
and never scored again.
Interestingly, there were some shades of Coach Shire
just handing the keys to Cooper flag last year in those moments
where he would kind of turn it over.
They did the same thing where they gave it to Cooper,
excuse me, to now Camboozer,
and both of their last two possessions,
were missed field goals by Camboozer as Carolina locked in defensively left Malik Brown
by Biggs to him to try to help out.
Carolina, interestingly, on the other side, one of the ways they found to attack Duke was to get
Camboosor switched onto a guard because they switched one through four.
So you saw it on that final possession, for example, on the Trimble three.
They got Boozer onto Derek Dixon, the freshman guard.
He's not like, I could probably keep up with him in a foot race, but he turns the
the corner on Boozer, everyone else has to close out and then Trimbles wide open.
And so Carolina started finding better ways to attack.
And they made three straight threes.
All nine of those points were threes.
Derek Dixon, then Henry Vassar, which that's a wrinkle that Patrick,
Patrick,
was out of this game as well.
He had fouled out.
And then obviously the big one from Trimble at the end.
So the other thing that transpired after the game,
right after the game, Isaac was a court storming.
And I think there was also like a false start.
Donno, let me, Dono, let me correct you there.
It happened twice once during the game and once after the game.
Keep going.
Yeah, yeah, it was right.
Because when Trimble hit what turned out to be the game winning three,
the buzzer went off, but then there was actually 0.4 seconds left.
So the court was unstormed, and then it was stormed again when the victory became official.
Unstormed.
Yeah, for sure.
Yeah, and UNC gets fined $50,000, which we saw this happen.
several times during the football season.
The ACC has adopted now a policy.
And I think the interest is in the right place.
It's on safety, right?
Fans safety, probably more importantly,
player and coach safety.
When you storm the field or you storm the court,
the school gets fined.
The problem is I don't see it stopping anybody
from storming the court.
So is it, like, is there another way to do this, Isaac?
Like, is there another way to make the games more safe
than just the $50,000 fine that nobody seems to mind paying?
No, first off, worth every penny of that $50,000.
Oh, yeah.
And there's been, like, there's been a lot of Duke fans I've seen over the weekend, like,
oh, we would never.
We would never do such.
But I think contextually, it made a ton of sense.
Like, which I get it.
Like a lot of people would say, but you're Carolina.
You should never stroke.
Like, this is a moment given the context of what happened on your home floor,
the comeback.
And think of Seth Trimble, man.
Everything this dude has been through in an era of NIL and transfer portal and everything.
else. Seth Trimble is what is good and right about college athletics, a dude who has been at
Carolina all four years, following in his brother's footsteps, came back from that broken forearm
missed nine games, and now was delivering a moment like that. Yes, that is absolutely what
needed to happen. But yes, it's so, like safety for the players and the coaches, got to get them
ushered off the floor. That's the goal. But the problem is, like, look, hang on everybody. If you could,
if you could pause your court storm for about 50 seconds while we usher these young men out,
like, I just, how are you going to pull that off? Like, and I get it. It's so I think there's the
court storm, just let it happen, but find ways to have personnel and rope around the opposition.
Don't make them shake hands. Get them out as quick as you can because I don't see how you hold
the other team off. And so I hate that for Duke. You know, that can be a scary moment. You don't
know what people are going to do. Um, but that kind of is what it is.
is in some ways for me.
You know, my personal solution to the court storming problem,
field storming problem would be to have enough personnel there to where you form a human
tunnel in essence for the players and the coaches of the losing team to where you're like,
you know what, go ahead, do y'all thing.
But for right now, we're going to protect the players and the coaches of the opposition
because obviously people aren't worried about it.
Somebody going to punch that tremble.
Like, he just hit the game winner.
Nobody's worried about it.
They're going to hug you with anything.
The only thing Seth Trimble is trying to do is hand out Ben and Jerry's coupons to Duke as they go through the handshake line.
That's all that happens.
And that to me is the thing of where I see a very clear path where it's like, hey, all personnel, they should have like some type of cold word or something for court storming inevitable.
Form that line where you all are facing outwards.
You have a path for the coaches and the staffers to go through.
And obviously, you know, that solves some of that.
But let me ask you this, okay.
with this rivalry.
One of the things that I saw earlier in the day,
one of the stranger things I'd ever seen,
Jay Williams,
whose jersey is hanging up in Cameron,
led a tar hill chant on college.
He did.
Now, I'm going to ask you,
which one do you think was a more shocking moment for this rivalry?
The 9-0 run to close up the game?
Or a man who's just,
Jersey is hanging up in Cameron leading a Tar Hill chant.
Which was more surprising?
Oh, clearly the Jay Williams chant.
Like, that was great.
Now, this is a guy who has said, like, there was a world in which Jay Williams
ended up at Carolina, but the Tar Heels went in a different direction on the
recruiting trail, got themselves a quarterback and a point guard in the form of Ron Curry,
who they thought, you know, like, because he was the dude.
I look mistake on North Carolina's part there.
Jay Williams clearly one of the best to ever do it in the ACC.
Like that it was befuddling to me.
I don't obviously I haven't looked into the Duke side of that.
I don't know what their thoughts were.
But shocking as a Carolina person.
But you know what?
I think it was a good omen for the Tar Heels.
Not as good an omen for Drake May on Sunday night.
I'll say that though.
Yeah.
I'll take this much.
If any NC state great.
was to do that, his number would be taken down.
Pulled down.
We would pull it down same day.
Same day.
You know what I mean?
Chance for Kevin Howe would do it himself.
Because, you know, he's a former athlete, former wrestler.
So he wouldn't just sit up there.
Oh, Russell Wilson did what?
Yeah, go ahead.
Bring it out.
Because Jay, Bill handles that wonderful.
Like, I feel like Billis does a great job of being
without leaning into all that.
Like it almost feels like Jay is trying to McAfee his way into this thing or something.
You know, just being a little more big in that regard.
The other thing, one other thing about the court storm is a lot of Duke fans have cried like,
where's the technical foul for storming the court before the game's over?
The problem is the game was over.
The buzzer sounded.
And so it's because the game is actually, you know, it wasn't actually over when they reviewed it,
but it was in real time.
that's fine. The other thing is, even if they had assessed a technical, let's say Duke hits both free throws,
you're still down one with four tenths of a second left on the clock. So it's like, that's a nothing burger to me.
Well, when we come back, I have some personal business to attend to with Isaac Shade because my Miami Hurricanes and his North Carolina Tar Heels have a big game on Tuesday night.
It's bigger for Miami, I think, that it is for UNC because Miami badly needs a quad one win to try and secure an NCAA tournament birth.
want to keep it locked right here.
We're only getting started on this brand new episode of Locked on ACC.

Isaac, a massive opportunity for the Miami Hurricanes tomorrow night, taking on your tar heels.
There's a lot of local interest in Buzz in South Florida about this game.
How do you see tomorrow night's game playing out?
And what does Miami have to do to pull off an upset?
That's a great question.
Let's also zoom out and see the ACC ramifications of this thing.
These two teams are tied for fifth in the conference right now.
So as we start to think about that double by, that comes into play in a big way.
Speaking of which, Kenton and NC State have a huge.
game tonight at Louisville, who the cards are a half game back of Carolina and
Miami, NC State tied with Virginia, a game and a half ahead of both those teams. So
like massive implications in all that. And then I think, Kent, if I'm thinking correctly,
then Miami has to turn around and come to Raleigh on Saturday. So this is a massive,
a massive week in ACC standings and Duke and Clemson play on Saturday. And they're tied at
top. Anyway, huge stuff going on right now. For this game, what are the interesting,
wrinkles of it is I love Jay Lucas, man.
I think he is a great coach.
I think he's going to be great for our league and our conference,
good energy.
They go double big just like North Carolina does.
This North Carolina team has been a return to the Roy Williams era.
And you see that with Henry Vassar and Caleb Wilson.
Obviously, Coach Lucas is rolling that out in the form of Ernest Dudae at the
five and Malik Renew at the four Renews playing as like an all ACC caliber player
right now, 20 points a game.
You got Trey Donaldson.
I know he's a little banged up, but just right behind him in the scoring.
So you've got a lot to contend with.
I see a world in which potentially these bigs cancel each other out, fellas.
And then one of the issues Carolina has faced this year is high, high level guards,
kind of abusing them in a scoring way.
We saw that from Abuka, Akore at Stanford.
We saw it from Nate Kalmice at Wake Forest.
We saw it from Bupi Miller at SMU.
And so Carolina is going to have to figure out how to.
keep Trey Donaldson in check in this game. I know he's a little bit banged up right now,
but he's out there being effective. Something we need to keep an eye on is Will True Washington
play. He's been away from the team trying to work his way back in. And then also kind of a cool
storyline, a cool wrinkle, is Caleb Wilson just faced two of his former AAAU teammates against
Duke on Saturday night from that night ride as Peach Jam championship. Dante Allen on that same
basketball team who in true Washington's place will probably be starting at the two so lots of great
storylines huge opportunity as you said dono from miami to get a big win at home and i think here's the
biggest thing we got to look for for north carolina what kind of are they able to avoid the
emotional and physical letdown of a massive game against duke that is the single biggest thing to
watch for yeah you know sometimes guys like to have uh the the stone cold steve austin effect you
No, it's where you have one beer and it turns into two and it turns into three and then you have five beers and a bloody Mary.
But in all seriousness, when we look at the ACC landscape right now, you talked about NC State and Louisville's matchup.
You talk about high-level guard play. Pat Kelsey's team always going to bring hard, high-level guard play.
NC State has the defending ACC player at a week in Quiet Air Copeland, who was averaging 13 assists and one turnover per game last week.
It's crazy.
what do you see being the outcome of this game?
Because I think that this game not only has ACC ramifications,
but seeding ramifications, both of these teams are expected to be in the big dance.
So where are you looking at in this one?
That's a great question, Kent.
One of the things for Louisville in and out right now is when the threes are falling or not.
It's the same with Nate Oates team down in Alabama.
It is like on the nights when those are going down,
they look almost unstoppable at times.
but if they're not, if NC State can use some of that length that they have in the back court,
man, I think that could really slow it down.
Obviously, Mike Hill Brown, the excellent freshman has been back playing for Pat Kelsey's team.
But man, with back issues, you just never know game in and game out.
One thing that I would love, love to see like Van Allen Lubin take advantage of tonight is that
I don't think Louisville's front court is all that great.
I think they can be had.
I know that NC State is maybe a little undersized in the front court,
but man, what they lack in height,
I think they make up for heart in the front court there.
And so I think those are the two battles specifically I'm watching for.
Who can dominate the front court and is Louisville hitting their threes?
Great stuff here as always.
You want to follow this man on X at Isaac Shade and check out his two shows on this network,
locked on tar heels and locked on college basketball.
Isaac, thank you so much for the time.
Appreciate you fellows.
Good luck tonight, KG.
Now, Isaac, we got to warn you.
We know that the people are after you because shot.
said the last thing you saw before the Stafford got hit was Jerry Curl Juice and the pale fist.
So I don't know.
I don't know.
I don't know if that was your activator.
I don't know who's Jerry Curl it was.
But I'm just saying you might have to lay low for a little while.
I have I have alibis from Saturday night and I need you guys to hold on to those.
We're holding it.
We're on the show.
You were for sure on the show.
Yeah.
Exactly.
We were watching the game together.
Don't worry about it.
That's right.
I am shady after all.
I love it.
Oh, man.
We'll talk a little football when we come back.
Who in the ACC is most likely to have a drop off from 2025 to 2026?
Kenton Gibbs from Locked on Wolfpack, Alex Dono from Locked on Cains.

All right, so, Kenton, if I look at, you know, teams that were high in the ACC standings this past season in football, obviously, I think we're all wondering if Virginia, UVA, can sustain what just a remarkable season that they and head coach Tony Elliott just had this past year.
But I would feel like the team most likely, you know, to drop off from this past season, I look at the team that at the very end of the transfer portal,
had their starting quarterback poached and their top wide receiver poached.
And you've got my guy, Mario Cristobal, to thank for that.
Duke won the ACC this past year.
I think they're going to have a real tough time after losing Darien Mentsa and Cooper Barcate on short notice.
Is it Duke or is it someone else?
You know, I knew you were going to take the bank when I said a team that has the highest to fall,
I think will be the team that has the biggest fall off.
I knew you were going instantly go to your Miami because that's how Miami fans are.
The world revolves around Miami, right?
But you got the wrong orange team.
I'm predicting that the hooves take a tumble this year.
Yeah.
Hear me out.
Not only are they losing their quarterback and their starting running back who was all world.
They're also losing their top two receivers from last year.
Trail Harris going on to the NFL, Jamal Adron, very unsavory behavior that literally just came out today.
that now he's no longer on the team.
You're looking at a situation
where you're losing a ton
on the side of the ball
that kept you afloat last year.
Let's just be honest.
Virginia was not winning games
because they were dominant defensively
and the offense did just enough.
They were winning track meets on grass
and it worked out for them well
until it didn't in the ACC championship game.
And with that being said,
I don't think that they'll be as bad
as they had been before last year,
but I do think that they're going to take a tumble
back down the earth a little bit.
The only redeeming factor for them is their schedule.
I wouldn't say it's Charmin soft, but it's not exactly tough either.
You know what I mean?
You're starting off with NC State and Brazil.
Then you got Norfolk State, then West Virginia, then Delaware,
then Florida State, Syracuse.
So after game one, you got a stretch where you should go about four and O
or five and O, four and one, somewhere along those lines.
Then after that, you've got SMU, Duke, Wake,
Forest, Cal, North Carolina, Virginia,
Tech. All of those teams are wildcards
in terms of how good they'll be except North Carolina
MIP. That's the only team where I'm like,
you can pencil that team in to be bad.
Even Duke, I'm like, yeah, I
struggle to believe many Diaz defenses
will be that bad two years in a row.
Yeah, that's the thing, right?
Even with EGEDA quarterback. So I predict
that Virginia will come back down to Earth.
I don't think they'll be terrible again.
I just think that this will be a more
six, seven win-ish type season, as opposed to what they had last year.
I had to.
I'm so sorry.
You know, I don't blame you.
You got a kid.
That's about that age that makes sense.
But I think that they'll just tumbled down from that.
I believe they won, what, 10, 11 games last year?
I think they're going to come back down to about six.
I think that's where six or seven, maybe eight tops is what we're looking at.
So, you know, if you take my nominee is Duke and yours is Virginia,
I think most anyone can agree neither of those two teams who just played one another in the ACC championship game will be back in that ACC championship game next season.
Right.
I mean, who do you predict are going to be the two?
Now, obviously the smart money would be on Miami getting one spot in the ACC championship game, even though they tend to find a way to opt out of the ACC championship game every single season.
I mean, you got Notre Dame ops out of the Pop-Tart Bowl.
Mario Cristobal opts out of the ACC title game and still gets to the national championship game.
But, I mean, on paper, Miami should absolutely be there this coming season.
And then, you know, who is it?
Is it Miami versus SMU?
Is it Miami versus Louisville?
I could see that happening.
I don't know.
Who do you think the other team's going to be?
You know, there are so many teams that are interesting.
There are so many teams that are interesting in this spot.
And I really feel like SMU is the easy pick coming into this thing.
I really and truly do.
My only question about SMU is what are they returning defensively to get back to where they were?
Not to mention that defense down the stretch showed some serious major lapses.
Now, here's my only problem with Louisville.
Who's going to be your quarterback?
Have they finally figured it out?
Have they finally figured out, hey, we need a guy that's going to be here for two to three years.
So that becomes a question for them.
And then the only problem when you get beyond them is everybody has much bigger problems.
Everybody else has a bunch of stuff that you're looking at and saying, well, how are they going to do this?
Cal, as much as you love JKS, how is a first-time head coach going to handle things that manage himself out West?
You know, you talk about NC State.
what defense do you have to speak up?
Where is the defender, where are they going to come from?
Where is your pass rushing going to come from?
So ultimately, in Virginia Tech, of course, James Franklin in year one,
I mean, what does James Franklin look like?
Does he have the juice back?
Does he have it again?
You're asking yourself bigger questions about every other team.
So it de facto, by process of elimination, leads me to say it'll be Miami
versus Miami West in the ACC championship game.
come in this upcoming year i'm sorry sm you'll always be miami west until you stop getting all the
boys from the canes you know ncc state is miami north now so it's okay it's all right and we don't mind
be in a miami directional school it worked out pretty well for y'all but ultimately i think that uh smu is
going to be there we're going to be talking to graces singleton about what's going on with uh with his boys
and and maybe we won't be talking to donno about how'd y'all find another way to opt out in another year where you were
By the way, the expected starting quarterback for Louisville is Ohio State Transfer, Lincoln Keen-Holtz,
which is interesting because he obviously was never a starter at Ohio State.
So it's like good player, former four-star recruit.
He's got four years of post-high school experience.
He's an older quarterback.
But at least the last few years, Louisville has brought in guys who have extensive starting experience.
That's not the case here.
Yeah, and that's what worries me.
That's what worries me about this team.
As much as I believe that Brom is a quarterback whisperer Supreme,
yes, trademarked.
I'm the first got to call them that.
But in all seriously,
even though I believe that Brom is a quarterback whisperer Supreme,
at some point in time,
there's only so much a coach can do.
You know, I'm a big believer in,
and my coaches used to say,
I can get you through the first three steps,
but everything after that, you've got to be a ball player.
Are we sure that Lincoln can be the type of ball player
that when defenses say,
stopping Isaac is everything.
We're going to give everything we got to stop
and Isaac Brown. Now figure it out.
With your Rob Receiver number one from last year
year going, with your quarterback for last year going,
figure out how to pass the ball now.
I'm not sure. I'm just not sure
that I trust him to, you know,
make those plays in the big moments
as opposed to my boys down in
Dallas where, listen,
Kevin Williams, all you can say about him,
or Kevin Jennings, rather, all you can say
about him, all you believe about him. That young
man, when the moment of truth is there,
There's a famous rapper named Rumble who had a song where he said,
well, he performed when there's money right in front of him.
Kevin Jennings says that song with a resounding yes every single time.
So ultimately, if it comes down to a situation where SMU, Louisville, moment of truth,
who do I trust?
I trust the better quarterback.
I trust Kevin Jennings.
