Starting point is 00:00:00 College football fans are almost unanimous in the lack of support for expanding the playoffs to 24 teams. But here's why the powers that be are moving in that direction anyway. You are Locked on ACC, your daily podcast on the Atlantic Coast Conference. Part of the Locked on Podcast Network, your team every day. He's Kenton Gibbs from Locked on Wolfpack. I'm Alex Dono from Locked on Cains. and on this episode of Locked on ACC, notable updates from On Three Sports
Starting point is 00:00:39 on a couple of quarterback competitions within the ACC before the upcoming football season. We'll talk about the projected first round draft picks for tomorrow night out of the ACC and what it says about the current state of the conference. There's some very good and some bad in this. Bekenton, let's talk about a 2014 playoff.
Starting point is 00:01:01 And this week, it's sounding like, there's a sudden ground swell of support for the decision makers to expand this thing that is currently at 12 to double that field to 24. Now first, tell me, I think you're not in favor of this, but I can't speak for you. How would you feel about a 24 team CFP moving forward? Donald, let me ask you this question. Has there ever been a singular year of college football that you can remember where let's go with, let's go with 75% of that number. Has there ever been a year where you thought 18 teams could win a national championship? Never.
Starting point is 00:01:47 Okay. Well, what about, you know what? Let's shrink that number down even more. Okay. Let's take a full third off. 16. Has there ever been a year where you thought 16 different teams to be in that? No, definitely not.
Starting point is 00:02:00 I'll put a footnote on that. So, like, last year, I thought there were a couple of teams that had they gotten in, they could have been competitive. Notre Dame, obviously, you know, Texas was looking really strong at the end of the year. But then on that note, you could also say, like, if we're being real here, James Madison and Tulane who got in, like, they didn't really have a chance, but they got in because of the auto bid. So even then, you'd say about 12 teams could have legitimately won it. But Dono, let's throw those teams in there. Let's completely keep the antitrust part of this in place. Because that's why the group of five have auto bids.
Starting point is 00:02:42 It's antitrust. You can't keep them out altogether. You could if I was in charge. I'd say, get the hell out of my playoff. For sure. And then you'd be sitting right up in court, okay? But let's even include that. You just said 14 teams that.
Starting point is 00:02:58 And mind you, The verbi of juniors was could make some noise. Yes. Not, hey, this team is definitively a championship caliber team. This team, one injury, one bounced their way. They're going to be not just in a national championship. They will win a national championship. They have a good shot at a national championship.
Starting point is 00:03:19 Right, because even like some of the teams that did get in like Alabama, I don't really think they had a shot. Like, you know, they're still living off their reputation. So, yeah, really like out of the 12 teams that. got in, like how many of those teams, probably half of that at most, actually had a chance to win. Okay. So now, we're really getting into it now.
Starting point is 00:03:39 And you wonder why I'm wearing this forest green hoodie today, for those of you who are listening and not watching it. It's not because the list of high schools with the most players drafted in the last decade just came out. And Cass Tech is the highest rated public school once again. It's not because of that. Highest rated public school in America. It's amazing.
Starting point is 00:03:57 It's a number one second to none. But that's neither here. I'm wearing green because that's what's motivating is. The green. The gold games are dying. The players don't want to participate in bowl games anymore and all that. But you know what? You know, the NFL would look very unfavorably on sitting out a playoff game.
Starting point is 00:04:15 You sit out a bowl game? Who cares? You sit out a playoff game? Now, that's the indictment of your character, son. There was an opportunity for you to raise a big banner, get one of the big trophies, hold the big golden one and you didn't take it? Hmm. Is that the type of guy we won in our facility?
Starting point is 00:04:35 No, that's the type of guy that'll hold out on us for sure. Oh, that's the type of guy, you know, we've got to have questions about him. So ultimately, this thing is driven entirely by the money. Yeah. And that's just the reality. And I will admit that, Donald, there's more teams now than ever that can win a national championship. Because you remember, when I came up in this thing watching college football, there was only four to five every year. That was it. That was here. BCS and all that,
Starting point is 00:05:08 you really had four to five teams that you will watch in terms of national championship. Everybody else, you're like, hey, my favorite team is they're a good 10-win team, but hopefully they get a good bowl game, right? It's very different than today's world. So ultimately, I think that this is the powers that bees play at saying, you know what? How about this? We'll save bowl games by making players show up and do their thing. Yeah. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:05:36 So obviously, if they're having these serious discussions, it means, like you said, it's all about the green. Like, they are figuring out that a bigger playoff is more profitable than the current bowl season, which is pretty obvious, right? Now, my obvious concerns about expanding it to 24, we talked about one of them. There's not 24 teams that can actually win the thing. It's just there's going to be blowouts in the first and second round. That's one. The other thing is, and I'm going to have to die on this hill because us, you know, we're getting old now, Kenton, you're in your 30s, I'm in my 40s.
Starting point is 00:06:12 You know, we remember what really makes college football so special compared to the NFL is every regular season game. feels like it's do or die, right? When you're watching a contending team, and now, you know, teams are getting into the playoff with two losses. You get three losses if you're in the SEC. You get an extra mulligan. Like, you know, that's still something, though,
Starting point is 00:06:35 because you know, if you pick up that third loss, you're probably most certainly out. It used to be if you lose one time, it's going to be dicey to win a championship. But you open this thing up to 24 teams. The regular season is not going to meet. You're going to be having four loss, probably from the SEC with the favorable treatment they get,
Starting point is 00:06:53 five lost teams getting into the playoff. You're going to kill my regular season. The college football regular season is the best regular season in sports by far, and you're going to destroy that. Do you remember, and they weren't members of the ACC at this time, but do you remember when West Virginia have one of their greatest seasons ever, undefeated? Oh, yeah, they're going.
Starting point is 00:07:17 They're going. They're going. and then old Dave Stead and those Pittsburgh Panthers. Backyard brawl. And they ruined it in the ball. That was it. That was over.
Starting point is 00:07:31 That was a fantastic season. That was a fantastic. That legitimately was one of the best seasons that West Virginia will ever have. And that's no disrespect to West Virginia. I noticed a pit fan's going to be mad at me for saying no disrespect to West Virginia. I ain't got a problem with the guys.
Starting point is 00:07:44 But I think there has to be something in between. You know, like what we have now, it's perfect. You've got a mix between if you have the greatest season in your college's history and you're in a power conference, you're probably going to the playoffs. Like, that's good. The idea of people arguing and litigating a five-loss team getting in, don't know, people did it this last year with Texas, and I was disgusted. I said, are y'all serious right now?
Starting point is 00:08:19 Do you want this team? in the playoff. This is horrendous. This is horrendous. So I look at this and I say 24, if you want to do 24, you have to do something more equitable with the split of who gets in and whatnot. And I'm all for, again, take it back 100% to the computers. Because if you're going to do it like that, don't give these humans the opportunity. Yeah, get rid of that committee, goofy committee. Yeah, you know, and this is no disrespect to these folks, but the committee has had multiple people that have had literally zero to do with college sports. Other than, oh, this person is a super fan.
Starting point is 00:09:01 Get your, almost made a lose my clean rig. Get your out of that room. You're not important to be there. You're not important to be there. Let's get some serious folk, or actually, let's take out all the folks, serious, unsurious, and different because the reality is nobody can watch all these teams. Nobody can watch all these games. I'd be lying if I told you, if I told you, Dono,
Starting point is 00:09:22 I know what Hawaii's been doing up there at Thomas Chang Stadium or Clarence P. Chang Stadium. I can't remember which one it is. I just know it's the Chang Stadium and Sports Complex. I don't know. Didn't they used to call it Aloha Stadium? I still call it Aloha. They did. They did.
Starting point is 00:09:40 That's what his mom named him Aloha Stadium. It's all right to call it Aloha Stadium. But I don't, I'm not going to sit here and say I've watched every game for me. every team. And so let the computers decide, hey, this is what's going on. This is what happened. And we won't have stuff like, well, this player got injured at this time. So this team don't belong in. But this team that lost their head coach and have their coach and staff and they got a player that team's fine. I don't want it. I don't want. Well, you know, I like to put the tinfoil hat on from time to time. I have an alternate theory on why they're pushing this 24 team playoff,
Starting point is 00:10:16 plus I want to talk about because the draft is coming up tomorrow night. Starting point is 00:12:22 playoff, which was originally proposed by the Big Ten, Tony Petiti, their commissioner has really been pushing for this. The SEC has been against it because I guess the SEC makes enough money from their conference championship game. That's another thing that would go away. If there was a 2014 playoff, they would get rid of conference championship games, which I know you and I are not a fan of. I guess Petiti doesn't mind surrendering the Big Ten championship, but the SEC does not want to surrender the SEC championship game. But here's from the Yahoo story. A committee member joked that, hey, we asked the government for help with NIL, and now they're involved in the playoff. Now, in Yahoo, they write, because when I first saw this, oh, my God, is this coming from, you know, the Oval Office?
Starting point is 00:13:07 Like, who's pushing for this? Not exactly. So they write, Congress and the federal government are not exactly prying into the college football playoff. However, a 14-person presidential media committee, its existence supported by the White House, so it's not government people, but it's like a committee that they support, is holding real conversations about the future of the postseason. In fact, a fascinating discussion that unfolded last week, the presidential committee identified a variety of ways that the industry can generate more revenue. to help financially stress schools. One of those expand the playoff to 24 teams. Now, always, like, I'm not sure, like, if they actually will listen to this committee.
Starting point is 00:13:50 All of the committee does include people who are involved in the power for conferences in Notre Dame, so maybe. And with that said, Kent, and when I talk about the tinfoil hat, I think about how negotiations work, okay? and if there's like the real support is to expand it from 12, which it's currently at, to 16, if you draw a line in the sand that's even farther out from that one, like if there's people in that room who are like, you know what, we're at 12, I think we're good. In fact, 12 might already be too much. And then you've got people on the other side of that table who really want 16. If you come at those conservative folk who wanted it at 12 and say, well, we want to make it 20.
Starting point is 00:14:33 you argue about it for a little bit and then you ultimately say, you know what, why don't we compromise at 16 and we get what you want it all along? Does that make sense? I think this is just how the negotiation works. Dono, you know me as well as almost anybody out there. Outside of this job, I'm a recruiter. That's what I do. I do the contract negotiations. That's what I do.
Starting point is 00:14:59 That's why I can pay a little bit more than the average American. Because somebody's going to say whenever we're hiring a new person and there's a new great person for this role, that row to third, they're going to come in and ask something that's above what the listed price is on the website. And they'll say, hey, you know, I just think that I blew your way in the process. I need that. And then we're going to come in and say, well, can you get back down to the range? Because the range is the range. And we need you to go there. And then they come back and then I tell the team, boom, boom, boom.
Starting point is 00:15:32 you know, that's always how it works out. So, Dono, you're absolutely right. And everybody likes to say, in a good compromise, nobody's happy. And so the 24 people are going to be saying, well, oh, we only got 16. We're so unhappy. And the 12 people are going to be saying, well, I'm unhappy too. I didn't want to see it grow anymore. It's the nature of the world.
Starting point is 00:15:57 Again, Donno and I have talked about many things on this show that if we're looking at all of the what is objectively good for college sports and traditions. If we're looking at what's objectively good for these universities, if we're objectively looking at what's good for almost every part of the sport, and even in some aspects, the players, things would be much different. However, it's not that. What we're looking at right now, again, in the words of Aloe Black, I need the dollar, the dollar, the dollar is what I need.
Starting point is 00:16:29 What I need. Hey, hey, hey, that's what they're going for. So ultimately, that's what we're going to see here happened, whether it's 16, whether it's 24, you know, whatever it is, this is an expansion of, hey, we need more money, we need more territory. We need to put more stakes in the ground because back in the day, everybody used to watch a boat. Back in the day, it didn't matter what the game was. It was football on TV. It didn't matter if it was the Bitcoin Bowl, which, by the way, fun fact, I played in the Bitcoin Bowl. I didn't even know that.
Starting point is 00:17:00 That was, I don't even remember there was a Bitcoin. Bitcoin bowl? The St. Petersburg Bowl was the Bitcoin, St. Petersburg Bowl for like a year or two. And NC State versus UCF, that was the game. Hey. But with that being said, again, I'm sitting here on the outside looking in, and I'm saying, bows keep losing their relevance.
Starting point is 00:17:21 It used to be only your top 25, 20-ish guys would sit out bowling. Now, if you're jumping in the porter, you're going to sit out. Right. If you're projected going to first three to four rounds, you're going to sit up. First seven rounds, if we're being real here. First seven rounds, as if we got it back in the day when teachers had 20 rounds of draft. All seven rounds. Exactly, every single round.
Starting point is 00:17:45 So ultimately, that's what we're looking at. We're looking at a situation where bowls have lost their teeth. And if they've lost their teeth in excitement, what else did they lose? Viewership. And if they lost viewership, what else do they lose? Money. And it's hard to, it's hard to tell these folks, hey, money, cash don't rule everything around me. That's just not how it works.
Starting point is 00:18:08 All right. So the NFL draft on Thursday night, you're going to have the first round, okay? You know, doing some research on it. What's going on with the ACC? So the over under for first round picks from the ACC is six and a half. I see it probably going just under that at six. But if you look at the ACC players that are projected to go among the first 32 picks, Kenton. Francis Mowie Goa, Maui Noah, I should know how to pronounce his name.
Starting point is 00:18:37 By now, I covered the guy for three years. Out of Miami, the offensive tackle, likely top 10. Ruben Bain Jr., top 10 or top 15 from Miami. Akeem Mesidor, Miami, mid-first round to late first round projection. Peter Woods, defensive tackle, Clemson, late first round projection. T.J. Parker, Edge, Clemson, late first round projection. Blake Miller, offensive tackle, Clemson, late first round projection. And then maybe, maybe Avion Terrell, Clemson, cornerback, late first round projection.
Starting point is 00:19:10 If all those go, that would get you to seven. But when I'm reading through that list, Kenton, I notice all seven of those names are from just two different schools. So, I mean, and also, if you're looking at it from a Clemson POV, you may not have too many more first rounders after this year if you look at the talent level there. So I don't know, what does that say about the conference that the first round projections are basically, you couldn't say a monopoly, but it's like only a two-headed monster at the top. Well, I don't think that that says anything about the conference other than this is this particular year. Next year, I can guarantee you as sure as the sun rises on the east.
Starting point is 00:19:48 and sets on the West, there will be first rounders from other schools unless we see some major help things happen with certain folks. For example, you said the two schools are who now, Donnell? Miami and Clemson. Let me read you all of the players in the top 25 from the ACC, or I'm sorry, the first rounders in the ACC from CBS Sports first round mock drive for next year. Damon Wilson, the second edge from Miami. he is mocked at number 11.
Starting point is 00:20:19 Darian Minson, quarterback Miami, mocked at number 19. I know what you're thinking. That's too low. What the hell? Hold on. TJ Moore, 25, Clemson, Amad Bowden Senior, D. Lyman, Miami. But wait, there's more.
Starting point is 00:20:34 I mean, ultimately, what you're looking at here, you're going to see a lot of these guys go pretty, you know, they're going to be going pretty highly. And here's the most interesting thing about that. CBS sports left off to me the guy that I most see as like, somebody's going to go in the first round and give him whatever he. Well, it's a Ricky pay scale now, but somebody's going to get this guy and they're going to have to re him up big time in about four years.
Starting point is 00:21:00 Isaac Brown. Isaac Brown's going to make a ton of money somewhere. Like, you can say what you want about, oh, he's got durability, you got this, he's got that, eight yards of carry. Eight yards. Yeah. Like, what team is looking at a population? We're four back averaging eight yards per carry.
Starting point is 00:21:18 And he's going to say, you're a little too thin for me. I'm a little worried. And mind you, we're not talking. A little creaky. What are we doing here? Exactly. And mind you, we're not talking eight yards per carry on a low volume. Like he's a guy.
Starting point is 00:21:32 Yeah. A hundred care only player in the nation with 100 plus averaging that type of yard. So ultimately, these mock drives and all that, they can say what they want to do. And they, you know, this, this is just a year. where Miami and Clemson dominate this thing. But there's plenty of room at the top. If C.J. Bailey has a great year next year, who wouldn't want this tall kid that showed up,
Starting point is 00:21:56 wanted to compete, showed up with lawyers, all the things that they talk about all the time, makes every off-platform throw you can imagine. He has plays that are freak-show stuff to where you're like, only 10 guys in the nation can do that. Now, granted, he was still a little young last year, and he had those plays where you would say, only 10 guys in America would make a play that bad.
Starting point is 00:22:14 But when he's at his best, he was doing freak show stuff. And again, there are many, many players in the ACC that I can see, hey, they're going to make themselves some money. And Quiet's kept, even a quarterback up in Syracuse. And Jelly, if he has a wonderful year and leads them to eight or nine wins, who doesn't start looking at him like, wait a minute, what's going on with that kid? Even if he didn't start at Notre Dame, he took this team that looked completely veckless and useless last year to now eight, nine wins because he's the starter again.
Starting point is 00:22:49 Again, I'm not saying Angelie's a first round pick. There are plenty of other players in the conference that are on the bubble or all that type of stuff. But the reality is we're looking at a situation where this year is dominated by Miami and Clemson. Next year, I'm sure it will be as well, but there will be more first rounders from the ACC in terms of diversity of teams. I hope so. When we come back on three sports has a couple notable up. on two quarterback competitions in the ACC and how they think those are going to play out. You want to keep it locked right here.
Starting point is 00:23:21 We're not done yet on this brand new episode of Locked on ACC. Yes, my friends, the NBA playoffs are here where every possession matters. Starting point is 00:24:14 our other shows. Kenton Gibbs and Grayson Boone do an awesome job talking all things, CJ Bailey and NC State on Locked on Wolfpack. I talk Miami every day on Locked on Cains. All right. So Kenton, on three sports talked about, you know, quarterback battles, not just in the ACC around the country, but a couple of the ACC updates based on their intel from spring football. Now for Clemson, you know, they go chalk here with like the obvious choice, and that would be Chris Vizina to be the opening game starter. They say if Clemson played a game this Saturday, Christopher Vizina would get the start for the Tigers.
Starting point is 00:24:52 Sources tell on three. But that's not the biggest headline coming out of spring ball in Clemson's quarterback room. Chris Denson was thought to have the leg up on true freshman Tate Reynolds, but that has shifted. We've covered that, Ken, with Reynolds the clear backup now and expected to push Vizina in fall camp. Davos-Sweeney has held off on naming a starter
Starting point is 00:25:12 and he's praised Reynolds for his physical tools and armed talent, six foot two, two hundred fifteen pound quarterback with seven of ten for 74 yards and a rushing touchdown in Clemson's spring game. So I guess like Kenton, and you've brought this up before that like Dabo has not been shy in the past about if a true freshman wins that job, he's not going to be shy about putting the best guy out there. So do you think in the next four months, Tate Reynolds, who I think flashed more in spring, could legitimately pass Vizina and maybe get that opening day start in early September.
Starting point is 00:25:46 I don't think he's the opening day starter, but I do think that Clemses' offense struggles mightily against LSU and from there, and from where Vizena doesn't write to ship and put up 40 a game for the next few, that will start saying they take it in there. You raise a good point. With the opener being against LSU, that's probably not when you throw the kid out there.
Starting point is 00:26:09 At LSU now. Right. You know, so you're going, you know, normally Clemson's excited to hear the Tigers are playing in Death Valley. Wrong Tigers, wrong Death Valley. So this is, I think that this is going to be a situation where Bazina wins the battle, you know, out of camp. I think the offense looks a little anemic to start the season off. And then next thing you know, you look up and you say, well, you know, let's see what the young bucks got. You know, let's just see what he's got.
Starting point is 00:26:37 And the interesting thing is, you're going to probably. probably see Tate Reynolds either way that this thing goes because after you play LSU, you play Georgia Southern. So you dominate them. Guess who's coming in the game by the third quarter? Oh, Reynolds, probably by the sell. I mean, I would say probably by the second quarter, but they had a close call against lesser competition last year.
Starting point is 00:27:01 But now, either way this goes, it works hard in Reynolds' favor. Because if it's a close call, now what are you saying? Yeah. Why does this guy that's been the program for forever having us struggle against Georgia Southern? And guess who you got after that? The University of North Carolina. So you got three games where would any of us be surprised to see Reynolds in the game? No.
Starting point is 00:27:26 No. No. So if he's going to get some burn, whether it's bad, and it's like, hey, Fizina ain't getting a job done. Or whether it's good and it's like, hey, they're blowing these guys out. And then all of a sudden, that little, for those of you who watch Invincible, if you saw Mark Grayson trying to fly away from Grand Region Thrag and he was creeping up on them very, very quickly walking them down in the middle of space. I have no idea what you're talking about.
Starting point is 00:27:54 Don't worry about it, I don't know. It's people under 40. No, I'm just joking. I'm joking. But it's one of those things where that little, that little devil on his shoulder is going to keep getting louder. It's going to keep getting closer. And I think the Reynolds is probably going to be the starter because, again, if Zena was a dude, he'd already have the job by now.
Starting point is 00:28:12 Yeah. So the other one that they cover is for Virginia. And they note, you know, Chandler Morris got denied. That was one of the rare court Ws for the NCAA was to not let Chandler Morris play another year. So it's between Bo Perbula and Eli Holstein. So Perbula is a senior Holstein, I think, will be a third year soft. because he started at Pitt as the true freshman. He got he got benched last year's retro retro,
Starting point is 00:28:42 so he's going to have two years of eligibility after this. So it seems pretty obvious, Kenton. Pribula gets the first team reps in the spring game all throughout spring. Both Pribula is their guy this year. But, you know, assuming Holstein like stays put at UVA beyond 2026, he could be positioning self to take the reins after that. And he'll still have two years left after Pabula. Not only that, did we not see last year and have we not seen in recent history how important it is to have a good backup quarterback?
Starting point is 00:29:13 How many teams have we seen be absolutely undone because their starter takes a bad hit? You hear the wrong thing, go snap. You hear the wrong thing, do a little ripping. You hear, you know, he's got a funny little gimp. Next thing you know, your season is down the drain because your backup quarterback was not prepared. you know so i think that holstein is a heck of a backup option to go with as well as the fact that like you said he's preparing to have that that job for the next couple of years however i would warn caution now how good is it to have that job for the next couple years if and this is a big if
Starting point is 00:29:51 but if elliott cannot follow up last season success with something similar i'm not saying he's got to win nine 10 again but if he goes out there and wins six this year. I mean, you're the starter on a ship that is looking like it's sinking and, you know, maybe it's the portal again. I mean, it's this day and age you never know. Exactly. So, you know, there's a lot of interesting things here.
Starting point is 00:30:18 But again, that's not to knock UVA. That's absolutely a good thing to have for Bueller and hosting in that quarterback. Yeah, no doubt.
