When it comes to the ACC, it seems that we are still fighting the net, all the rankings, all the bracketology, all whatever you can imagine.
It's more that we win.
It seems like we take three steps back.
And really, only two teams going to make the NCAA tournament for the men seems kind of unrealistic.
But is it here we go again?

All right, we're going over some basketball today.
The net seems to be getting in the way for the ACC.
And we're going to talk about some of the teams doing well,
some of the teams doing men,
and some of the teams that are struggling,
all based on the weekend game matchups.
Kenton, how are you feeling?
You know, I want to feel great.
I want to feel good.
But the way that the nation is treating the ACC,
the way that ESPN is treating the ACC,
I'm sick and tired to be a sick and tired, obviously.
Yeah, it seems that, you know, once again,
we're in this fight of our lives to try and get a couple good ACC
teams in this bad boy that is the NCAA tournament,
and we have to yet again prove ourselves worthy of good basketball.
But, you know, maybe it's just, I'm not going to say it's any peaceful,
but maybe we should look at scheduling going into next year.
I don't know, I don't know.
I don't think it's scheduling at all.
I think, again, you need a bigger, better mouthpiece.
Yeah, you could talk about NET all day and all night.
But we had the number one team in the conference playing the number two team in the conference today.
And do we get any word from anybody saying, hey, this is actually a potentially big game?
You were one of the only people saying this could be a huge upset.
UNC needs to be on upset alert.
They need to be prepared for this game because this is a game that not only could go wrong for them,
but has serious conference implications.
And so I'm looking at Jimmy P and I'm saying, hey, man, what's going on, brother?
What's what we doing?
How's everything rolling?
Because, you know, at some point in time, we have to acknowledge there's something in the water that just ain't going right here.
When your top two teams are going out one another and there's nothing to be said there.
And even if you want to make the argument, well, Florida State is just tops in terms of conference record.
and Duke is the actual number two.
How big do you think the Battle of the Blues will be this year in comparison to the other years?
Even though both of those teams are ranked high later.
I believe they're both inside the top 10 right now.
Duke is number 12 but close, yes.
Top 15 right now.
Come on now.
Either way, it's still not going to get the hype of old Battle of the Blues.
And it shouldn't be that way.
But for whatever reason, all of a sudden, the ACC can't do nothing right.
Well, in ESPN's defense, they are doing college game day in Chapel Hill on February 3rd,
but I think that at this point, that's just a commonplace.
And that goes back to your point of that only time that people really feel the ACC is doing well is when Duke and UNC are doing well.
So it's like, okay, of course we can come back this year because it's worthy.
It's the UNC.
It's Duke rivalry.
We can relive and do all the things.
They are top 15 programs.
But it feels as if, you know, they were in Arkansas today.
I was watching when I was in the gym.
And I just think, you know, okay, cool.
But can we travel to Tallahassee?
It felt like it could have been a great opportunity.
Can you go to Cameron with Clemson versus Duke?
I feel like there were just, you know, also good moments there for our ACC programs.
Absolutely.
Absolutely.
And I think the most disappointing part of this whole thing is the idea that, hey, we're not good of Duke and USC are good.
But they're both good.
They're both good.
What more do you want from me?
What more do you want?
Oh, the net says that you're not this and that.
Listen, sometimes you have to do this fun thing called watch the games.
Crazy concept.
I know it's tough.
I know it's tough.
But sometimes when you watch the games, you see that some of the yin-yang and riftra
talking don't exactly make sense.
But let's get into the game.
I don't want to ramble on too long.
That's fine.
I think North Carolina is a great example of things going right for the A.C.
for men's college basketball in general, beat yet another really good program, 7568,
Florida State game where it came down to the wire.
It wasn't even seven points worth of difference, if you asked me.
And it was Harrison Ingram, RJ Davis, stepping up in big ways when it mattered most.
And I think that's something important, as we consider this whole preseason was all about
Armando Becos's return.
And I think Elliot Kadeau is finally starting, you know, finding his way.
and he's becoming the back court duo that RJ Davis certainly needs.
And it's just I was worried about this game feeling like, yeah, if we're going to get one punch in the mouth,
might as well be with Ford State.
Definitely not going to help the net.
But at least it gets this team back on like some sort of grounding just in case we're getting down this hard stretch of ACC play.
But they said, listen, we got it covered.
We're not stressed.
And it definitely seemed like this team wasn't stressed throughout the game.
You know, RJ Davis is trying to beat those free throw merchant allegations.
He's trying his hardest to beat him.
And boy, is he looking phenomenal as the ACC's leading score?
You already talked about Harry Ingram, but I'm going to tell you, you know, I know the man is still alive.
But that is Dennis Robin reincarnate.
Because if Harry is going to do anything, he's going to attack those boards with an enthusiasm unknown to mankind.
Only he's listed at success.
He's listed at 6-7.
I don't talk to some folks.
He's 6-5 and a half.
You know, he might have put those little jail insoles in
and get him to 6-7.
But, you know, and yet, every time that ball goes toward the rim,
you see Harry preparing to crash the glass like somebody said,
if you don't get that rebound, your family's done.
That's the type of energy he brings to the boards.
And that's the type of energy he bought it.
this game, which was essential to get over the home against the Florida State team that played a
very good game. This was not a game where, you know, Florida State rolled over. They got the wheels
whooped off them or anything along those lines. They showed up. They competed. They were right there.
It's just when it was winning time, Florida State just couldn't make as many plays as the Tar Heels.
And even beyond that, you know, there were some moments where you just kind of get looking, you say,
was it a foul? Was it not a foul?
You know, it could go either way, but those calls kind of went against them as well.
But that's the nature of basketball, right?
I mean, you've got to be prepared for that type of thing to happen.
And again, full credit to UNC, they won this game.
They're undefeating in the conference this deep in the season for a reason.
You know, there's nothing to be played with right now.
I definitely agree.
I think that, you know, for Florida State, they just needed some sharp shooters and clutch moments
and they just didn't have that, right?
guys that were shooting from three that any other day when you have someone who's just a pure
shooter that's going every single time. And it just was unfortunate that it came up short for
them. But credit to North Carolina that I think once again, everyone's playing their part,
understanding their roles. And to Ingram's credit, I think he seizing the moment of playing
Carolina basketball, right? Someone who comes in and really feels appreciative of the opportunity
given to him as well as Cormac Ryan, right, playing with some really good defensive power.
hitting clutch shots when he needs to.
So I think this is just really a positive shift for a program that was insane turmoil
last year.
Hubert Davis's head was on the stake.
All the vests have hot.
See, he wasn't going to be able to do it, blah, blah, blah.
But this to me feels like the first year where Carolina basketball not only back,
but they're cool with flying under the radar is not doing too much.
I mean, to me, the two guys that are kind of unheroded are the reason that they are in
the position they're in and that's Caddo and Ingraham, period.
I don't think, you know, we're seeing that R.J. Davis is a catcher shoe guy.
That's when he's at his best.
But what does he need to do to be a catcher shoe guy?
Somebody else needs to handle the ball and not just handle the ball from a standpoint of looking
for my own shot, but looking to set up your teammates.
Elliot Cadoe does that amazingly.
Harry Ingram is the heart and soul of this thing.
He is the engine that gets this thing going because at the end of the day, when there were
moments in lows where Florida State
looked like they were going to battle back, all of a
sudden you got a two, three rebound possession by
Harry. And it's just like,
oh my God, can we please?
Can we please get a defensive rebound?
And Harry said, not so fast, my friends.
So, you know, those two are really,
while they are getting some love, I don't think that they're
giving the love of, of course, Baycott and Davis,
which I think they deserve just as much,
if not more credit than those two.
Sure, 100% agree there. Let's talk a little more
about ACC Hoops and Justice
second, but we know that we are big football people here. We know you as well love a good game,
but postseason is getting underway and postseason is getting ready to wrap up. And we don't want
you to miss out on opportunities with Fandul, America's number one sportsbook. Right now,

Van Duel is the official partner of the NFL.
So Caroline definitely had a good start who could roll towards conference play.
It was Duke that was able to defend home well, where Clemson has visited Cameron a time
or two and come away, sweeped away with an upset.
but it felt as it came down to the last play.
Was it a foul?
Was it not a foul?
You never leave it in hands with the refs, game winning free throws for Proctor and everyone
is just in their fields.
You got Gerard, who's ready to go up to a ref and sort of lay hands, talk a little bit,
have a conversation about being frustrated with some of the calls.
And yet, you know, at the end of the day, a win is a win.
I think that Shire definitely felt like it could have gone both ways.
There were moments where this is just straight hard up,
ACC basketball, get in or get lost.
But, you know, did I not say the same thing for the last game in terms of certain calls
go your way, certain calls don't, and, you know, of course in Cameron, you got to know,
you got to know, you have got to mash that gas and do not, you know, give them the opportunity
to make it closer to have the ball going down the stretch.
So you could be standing on their announcers table and doing your best hints and impression.
That's what you got to do.
point blank period and you know this is a game that clemson played very well in i talk all the time
about get p j haw some help help is here help showed up help did their thing the help helped and yet
it just wasn't enough down the stretch this is a tough one this is a really tough one for clemson
because this is a clemson team that could have really used this win this this win right here
really bolstered would have bolstered any hopes they had of getting into that
that bubble conversation, getting more firmly into that bubble conversation.
It just didn't work out that way.
And again, when you think about Duke, you know,
you talk about how much depth they have and how many guys they have,
but you don't really think, oh, yeah,
their leading scorer is going to be Jared McLean.
You don't think that.
You don't, when you look at Philipowski, when you look at Proctor,
when you look at Roach, you're not thinking, oh, in a game like this,
this, McCain is going to be the X factor.
He's going to be the difference in this game.
And yet he was.
His timely shooting definitely put this Duke team in position to come away with a win,
which is exactly what they did.
And again, the end was, I'm not going to lie to you and say the end wasn't controversial.
I'm not going to lie to you and say, I prefer refs to swallow the whistle in that moment.
But it is what it is, you know, we move.
I think it's something to consider how worried we should be or not be for Duke.
you can sweep by wins in Cameron.
We know that they have had trouble on the road.
But for me, it's just sort of one of those things where the criticism that
Heber Davis got, I don't think John Shire receives.
And it's just also, is this just a weak year for men's college basketball play?
I don't know, because is Duke a number 12 team?
Did they show that for you?
I don't know.
It's not giving a dominant Duke that I'm used to seeing, right?
a dominant big Caucasian male who's able to just really take over the game.
And I've watched Duke for a very long time.
And I just, I don't necessarily feel that powerhouse Duke Blue Devil energy that I'm used to seeing.
Well, why do you think it is that Shire isn't getting the same, you know, same Iyer drawn his way that,
that Hubert Davis was during his drugs?
Well, you know, I think he's been fortunate enough to have, or unfortunate enough to have some players get injured, right?
So there's excuses a little more.
There's an opportunity.
I'm finding it.
There's opportunities for, hey, we don't have, we're not at full strength.
So I'm doing the best I can with what I got.
I think that might be at the top of the list.
I think, and I don't, don't buy my head off here.
But I think the biggest difference between the two is this is, I think that we could
agree there have been moments this year where some people say, hmm, this feels a little like a
Duke down year. Is that fair to say?
I wouldn't say it's a Duke down year because I don't know when Duke's, I don't know
of recent, especially with Shire, when Duke's been up up. But Duke has also had this dominance
to where it's hard to come behind the quote unquote goat. Right. And so with that being said,
and I want to go off that a little bit. They also just won the ACC championship. And that's
what I was about to say is you're coming off of that situation and even in this year,
which you're considering there's some struggles because of injury,
most teams would kill for this.
Most teams would kill for what they have, right?
Like the conference record, obviously a loss of Georgia Tech.
Obviously, you don't want some of the losses that they have in conference.
But when you look at their out-of-conference schedule and the games they played
and won out-of-conference, you've got to give them their props.
Now, don't get me wrong.
If Shire were to miss the tournament, I want to see people talk.
talk about him the same way they did with Hilbert.
I want to see the exact same thing.
Give the man his lashes.
But he hasn't been in that position yet.
Yeah, I don't think he'll be in that position.
Again, I don't know if it's a down year for college,
men's college basketball or what have you,
but do I necessarily feel like they're a top 12 program?
That remains to be seen.
There were other backups here that we're going to go over before we talk about
the net because Clemson was potentially affected by that,
as you mentioned and alluded to earlier.
but Boston College was able to squeak out a win against a solid Notre Dame team that's young and figuring themselves out.
But it feels like Boston College has just enough wins that gives you want to have hope for Coach Grant.
But at this point, it says, are we turning the corner or are we not?
But is it Boston College and this is just who they are?
Who knows?
I think this is who Boston College is.
But I think the biggest thing about that is I'm not, I don't want to say regardless of what happens, the rest of the
season, they're out unless they win the tournament.
But I will say this.
I'm not sure that they have the ability to do enough to where they get in without at
least making a very deep run in the ACC tournament, which is in New York now, right?
If they don't make a good run, if not win it out right in New York, don't get me wrong.
Good win by Boston College today.
You know, stick it to Notre Dame, a Notre Dame team that, like you said, young figuring their way out.
Coach that is brand new into that position at Notre Dame as well.
I get it.
I'm not sure that a game like this moves the needle,
but it's good to not lose this game.
I'll tell you that much.
Absolutely.
Virginia took care of business against Louisville,
as we have said multiple times on the show,
you got to win against the Cardinals, 69 to 52.
And, you know, I really feel like, you know,
I saw some tweets earlier, as nice as Kenny Payne is,
as much as he's an alumnus of the university,
and he's probably poured his heart and soul into that red and black is that's not what moves the financial needle gets butts in seats, gets you to where you want to be as a perennial powerhouse in men's college basketball, especially when you start having the goodness that has been for them from a football lens.
You want to sort of have that brick by brick across your athletic board and they're just bringing everybody down.
Kenny Payne.
Hold on.
Which camera am I looking?
into Kenny Payne is not the guy.
Do got to go.
Now granted, I'm not saying that you need patino back.
Not saying that.
Never going to happen.
But yes.
That's what I'm saying.
I'm not saying you need patino back.
I'm not saying get crazy.
Kenny Payne is not the guy.
Your program is so rough.
Those boys have the cooties.
Do you know what that means?
You remember when you were kids and y'all said, oh, my God, such or so has cooties.
What did that mean?
Stay away from that person.
They can't touch you.
Where else do you get it?
That is what Louisville is to the conference because if you lose to Louisville, well, you know,
when Calcizmo was tweeting about the Detroit Pistons, he was like, you just don't want to be,
at this point, you don't want to be that team, right?
You don't want to be the one.
Mind you, he and the Wizards ended up losing to the Pistons.
So, like, you know, eat crow.
But it just feels as if we're on that type of time with Louisville for the rest of the seats.
Like you just don't want to be that team that gets pops in the mouth upset.
So we can get Kenny Payne out of here so we can make this a more competitive basketball landscape for the ACC.
Because, I mean, one loss from them and you're finding yourself really, not even on bubble.
You end up out, not even in the tub.
First of all, there was no need to bring my pisses in this.
No need.
But second of all, you're absolutely right.
know this is a situation again it's getting untenable down there and some people are asking is
Tony Bennett kind of getting his swagger is this team is Beakman and company is McNeely and company are
getting there is Louisville okay well I'm just saying UVA is trending you got your swagger back
if you felt you got your swagger back by being Louisville have a hard look in there I'm saying
they're trending have a hard hard look
Yeah, nope.
Nope.
I'm saying they evisged a loss to NC State.
They go and dominate Louisville.
The team is getting dogwalked by Syracuse right now.
All right.
I just, you know, hey, cool.
Anyway, let's talk about one more game or two more games here, Miami and Pitt.
Y'all see how she treat me.
Y'all see how I get treated on the show?
I'm just not entertaining the foolishness.
Miami and Pitt, 7268 victory for the hurricanes.
And they talk about a team that's trending right.
Like the beaten pit is a good one for the hurricanes who definitely were in their fields as of late picking up some very random else that were not used to seeing from Coach Laranega.
Yeah, I agree a thousand percent, but I think the biggest thing for this Miami team, you know, it's a shame that we talk about them right after we talk about that whole who gets the cooties and like you can't lose to Louisville because they did, right?
Like this is a team that legitimately did that, but you are correct in same.
this is another team that is trending in the right direction.
The question is, how long can they sustain this and how healthy is no-Chad O'Meer going forward?
He is the centerpiece of that team.
He provides the presence down low, especially offensively and on the glass.
He's going to be vital to that team going forward.
So the big fella's health, critical to this team going forward.
Absolutely critical.
Absolutely agree.
Georgia Tech took a hard one against Virginia Tech in 91-67 victory for the Hokies.
And the Hokies are always that team that they can find a way to win.
I think their senior leadership definitely helped them in this case against a very young Georgia Tech team
and found a way to get back on the horse.
But the Hokies certainly are just picking and choosing up with some dubs.
And that'll be very helpful for them as they try and make their case for the NCAA tournament.
Virginia Tech is the biggest enigma there.
is. They really are.
Because you look at this team and you say,
oh, you get blown out
by FAU, you get
blown out by Auburn,
but then you go on a little bit of a win street.
And then you go one and four
in the next four games, but
the one win is against the rank
cleansing. And then after that,
you come out with a three-game win-street,
the capper of that three-game
win-street, which really, I'm not,
I feel incorrect in saying the caper
because there's plenty of time left for
them to keep this winning street going against a Duke team that we've talked about.
Struggles on the road.
Struggles on the road big time.
Going on up to Blacksburg, I look at this team and I say, who are you?
That's Virginia Tech team are we going to see?
But what we also know is regardless of the game, regardless of the day, Padula, Couture, and company,
they're going to shoot the blood out that ball now.
If they don't do nothing else,
they might not always make it.
Might not always be hot,
but they might not always defend.
But when they come to knocking down those triples,
oh, baby, go hit.
Three to the dome.
It's going down every time.
Absolutely.
Last game here, Syracuse and NC State.
Wrapped up as we were recording the show,
7765 victory for the Orange Men,
who I think are like the slow living,
just riding under the tide about having a pretty decent season,
considering you're coming off.
a retirement year of a legend and now you're turning the page.
I think they're doing decent enough and picking up a good win.
But NC State, you're having sort of a head scratching a loss where I don't understand
because this is a team that's very talented.
But at the end of the day, you know, we get back to basics.
It's fundamentals.
The ball has to go in the hoop.
You have to score points in order,
and you have to score more than the other team.
Do we have to talk about this game?
I think at the end of the day, you could be the hypeest,
most, you know, thug it out, you know, energetic, fight back.
You know, you play, y'all some dogs.
I give NC State that.
But you got to make some baskets, baby.
Do we have to talk about this?
We can, I can keep going.
You say that Syracuse is just getting off Beheim retiring.
Yeah.
There was supposed to be a shift in the frame, in the dynamic.
Not only in the triangle, not only in the hoop state of North Carolina, not only in the ACC,
no, I'll cap it out the ACC, but potentially the country.
You had, again, we already talked about Petino getting put on the outs for the reasons he was put on the outs.
You had Roy Williams retiring, taking all that legendary, you know, coaching pedigree with him.
You had Coach K retiring, you know, going to the North.
this nice little farewell tour, got all the guys in the Brotherhood come on out.
Good for you.
They got Beehom in that classic zone leaving the conference.
And NC State says, we got our guy.
We got our guy.
NC State says there's going to be the shift.
It's coming.
Everything's aligned.
The stars are perfect.
And yet, Coach Keats and this team continues to wet the bed.
So maybe you fired the guy, go find who you actually know to be good, and then you get this going
because, like you mentioned, all of these legends have retired.
So maybe you just need to young, fresh energy, fresh eyes much as we like keeping the ice cream.
It's just not enough.
We've given him all the grace we can provide, and we just move on.
Boob Corgan seems like the type that he can move on quick.
So I just, maybe it may be it's time.
Well, Boogorgian ain't had to make no tough decisions about the major, you know, the big three
in terms of men's basketball, football, baseball, and it's time in the NC State.
But damn, it is time to make a serious decision.
And that's all I'm going to say about it.
Because my mama told me, if you ain't got nothing nice to say, don't say nothing at all.
So I'm a hush.
I'm a hodge because that's all I'm going to say.
I heard Buchorg had made a great tough decision when it came to FSU, but that's either here nor there.
What we do want to wrap up the show with is the net.
As you mentioned, Clemson went into Cameron.
The loss sort of puts them on a serious bubble possibly out.
A lot of people are saying only two ACCC teams are now getting into NCAA tournament.
That being Duke and North Carolina seems insane and absurd to me.
And I just feel like once again I'm begging, what are you people watching?
Why do you not feel as if close games but losses are such a hindrance to allowing for other ACCC programs to be in a bigger, larger 64-width scheme of tournament?
Well, you know how that goes.
The metrics say, you know, I'm going to just say this.
Get these nerds out of sports.
Get these nerds out of my game.
Get them out of the game that I love.
Okay.
I'm tired of hearing what the analytics say you should go for,
where the analytics say that this team is a good.
Listen, the analytics can tell us part of the picture.
Absolutely.
They can definitely provide clarity to a picture.
Not going to deny that at all.
Right.
At some point in time,
And we've got to admit, hey, the analytics don't account for many, many things that, you know, these teams can or cannot do.
The analytics cannot account for how good Clemson is when Hall and Gerard are both rolling at the same time.
The analytics cannot account for how well Syracuse offense runs and matriculates when the ball flows through Judah, Mitz,
and he's not just looking to score.
The analytics cannot account for the fact that all, as much as you want to count out Tony Bennett,
as much as you want to say, this, you are, this university of a junior team, these holes ain't got it.
I'll tell you what.
Every time you doubt Tony Bennett, he gets lit like a tiki torches Charlottesville.
He is ready to get the job done.
every time you say he's not the guy or oh is he falling off oh is this team bad he shows up
and shows up the analytics don't account for that the analytics don't account for when you
want to talk about playing in march who wants to play to him who umbc fordum i mean i could
okay okay hey what do i know but i will say this analytics does not measure heart and talent
analytics does not measure work ethic and all the things.
And I think sometimes we get so caught up in what it says on data that we don't
account for what the team has been through.
We don't account for who, you know,
has come up big and big moments.
I think that's something to where, you know,
if there is a criteria that we see committees go through all the time,
a little bit of just what do we see with our naked eye might be helpful.
Yeah, yeah.
Again, sure, if you want to say everybody named them I want to play UVA, sure.
But again, guys like coach having and kids.
company, they're much better than the net would have you believe. That's just the fact.
That's just the fact. Absolutely agree. All right, we got a lot to go over here on Monday's show.
We're going to give you a little bit of peek into some portal conversations, some women's basketball
things, and make sure that we get you guys locked in for another great week of ACC content.
And as we talk about, again, the shift in the who is not vouching for us enough. We're going to
make our own bracketology praise and figure out just maybe who should be in this bad boy
when it's all said and done. You don't want to miss that. So come on back, leave us nice comments,
five-star reviews and all that fun stuff for Canis Cooper and Kenton Gibbs. Until next time.
