Starting point is 00:00:02 Complementary football is not just about offense and defense. It's also about special teams. And today, the Bengals special teams likely cost them what would have been a massive win in Pittsburgh against the Steelers. Well, you know, in the other phase on defense, they kind of take a step backwards on all three levels. And it's not just the defense and special teams. The penalties killed them, including a major one on special teams. Burrow played a pretty good game overall, but in the clutch, in the last play, fumble the ball to end the game. So how does that look on a supposed to be elite quarterback?
Starting point is 00:00:40 Today, it's the Bengals Squad, everything Cincinnati Bengals every week. Breaking down all the big hits and game-changing plays from the Queen City, the way only the Locked-on Podcast Network can. From the jungle to the playoffs, the Bengals Squad show starts now. Welcome to the Bengals Squad Show. We are live on lockdown Bengals and the lockdown podcast network celebrating 10 years of your team every day. We are not celebrating the Bengals today, though. They fell to the Pittsburgh Steelers 30 to 27 in Pittsburgh this afternoon. I'm Alex Frank, Coach Art Valero, Mike Santagana, Evan Stacy with you all here this Sunday afternoon to discuss the first Bengals loss of the season.
Starting point is 00:01:27 And it comes in the AFC North Joe Burrow with a late game. when the Bengals were driving in fuel goal range to potentially tie the game, maybe win the game. But gentlemen, when all three faces of the game are as out of sync as they were for the Bengals today, mistakes like that and mistakes like the Bengals made on special teams, they're going to cost you in division games. That's exactly what happened today. Oh, I tell you, absolutely right. You know what? You kind of wonder where their minds were in a game because you can look at the first two games match-up.
Starting point is 00:02:01 up so the year. And they came out and they were rolled and they did what it took to win. Defense was on fire. And today it seemed like the Steelers, who the previous two games were almost nil as far as their offensive production was concerned, came out and they looked like the leading team in the NFL in terms of offensive production. They ran the ball. They threw the ball. You have a 42-year-old man who's running around extending play. I mean, it was a conglomeration of all three phases. And, you know, the offense did what they needed to do. I thought they played really well until the last, you know, that last drive.
Starting point is 00:02:48 But the other two phases, I didn't think stepped up to a championship style of effort that you need to have if you're bound to go into the playoffs and deep into the playoff. playoffs. The defense stunk, right? Like we were so, everybody's so excited about the six points that they gave up against Houston. This was the worst offense in the league by points scored. They didn't have 30 points in the last two games combined. And they scored 30 today. And I understand. There are some people that are saying, well, hey, the punt unit, the punt return unit gave up some points. And I agree. Like the punt return unit, the defense only got off the field for punts twice this entire game. you know what happened on those a penalty that turned into a touchdown and then they muff the punt and give up an explosive play on a punt so yeah it's compounded by how bad the punt team is the
Starting point is 00:03:43 sealers are averaging six punts a game and you force two so it's not as if this went well outside of those like that's some hidden thing here that really helped out the steelers office Stios offense was kicking their butts the entire game and nothing more than that last drive, which Dexter Lawrence saved them with the sack. They, what did they give up 170 yards in a single drive? I know they didn't score a touchdown, but I mean,
Starting point is 00:04:09 that holding call, I thought that was something little iffy there on Metcalf, kind of got saved and immediately give up two more explosive runs to the same guy. And it's, it blew my mind that this defense, it blew my mind a little bit because I did think this defense was better. I didn't fully buy that this was some type of elite unit. I keep looking at the players.
Starting point is 00:04:32 I'm like, there's still some of these guys here from last year or whatever. It blew my mind that you would still have this type of game. This was basically the Russell Wilson game from two years ago that basically got Lou Anirumo fired done over again, where you gave up over, you gave up 30 points to a team, very likely will not score 30 points again in the next How long? How many more times do you think this year the Steelers score 30 or more points in a game that's not against Cincinnati Bengals? Three max. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:05:03 Yeah. So you're going to. And Evan pointed it out earlier. You know what? It looked a lot like a year ago. Once the ball cleared the line of scrimmage, the tackling was horrendous. And it was like if it wasn't for the running back tripping. there's another touchdown.
Starting point is 00:05:26 Yeah. And it's like, oh, that's crazy. That's what I mean. They wanted to give up 300 yards on the most important drive of the season. They can say, please score. Please score. Stop falling down. And the thing that got me the most was that Darnell Washington catch on the right
Starting point is 00:05:41 sideline. And he turns up, of course, Barrett Carter missed the tackle to start. So he gets a full head of steam. And I'm watching these guys. And they're like, look, what a savvy move from the wide receiver to box out the corner. I'm like, that corner doesn't want to get in the way. you know, he's getting boxed out at his own will. Oh, no, I can't reach Darnell.
Starting point is 00:05:59 Is it that surprising that Kyle Ducker is the guy to make the play? Not somebody that was on this team last year. Like that to me was so frustrating that nobody wanted to get in his way. Like, yeah, you're going to get run over. It sucks. It hurts. That's football. You're paid $5 million to go do that.
Starting point is 00:06:13 So go hit that guy, get run over, but force him out of bounds. And I hated it. So much about this game just felt like the last three, two years of when this team would get their butts kicked on defense by the Steelers offense. You think of the games from last year where it would happen because they didn't exactly have good defensive performances there. And then two years ago, the one that reminded me the most was the Russell Wilson game. Granted, not as many checkdowns that just went for 100 yards, but still tackling issues,
Starting point is 00:06:40 coverage issues, running into each other as corners. I don't know what you can do. It just feels like the identity of this team is to get their butts kicked by the Pittsburgh Steelers offense at least once a year. Evan? Yeah, I felt like I was in like a time machine or something, going back to the defenses of the past few years, like where I'm just begging for one stop.
Starting point is 00:07:04 Yeah, I mean, the Steelers just dominated offensively. They had over 400 yards of offense. Jalen Warren basically, like, was the whole team. He had almost 200 yards of total offense, seven and a half yards per carry, he averaged. And if that holding call didn't happen, who knows what he would have done. He was just explosive run after explosive run, breaking tackles.
Starting point is 00:07:26 And it felt a lot like 2025, 2024, where the tackling was bad, a lot of blatant coverage issues. Defensive line wasn't really getting much push on the offensive line outside of Dexter Lawrence. And they were just getting out physical and dominated. And then the offense was doing their job, you know, most of the game until that last drive. And then you can't, obviously, you can't have two special teams blunders that end up at 10 points. and very easily probably should have been 14 points that wasn't for Dexter Lawrence. And so when you have that, that's, I mean, the main reason why you lose the game.
Starting point is 00:08:00 You lose the turnover battle. You have two big turnovers on special teams and your defense is just getting pushed around and bullied. And they're in Washington. They still don't know how to tackle the guy. They tackle him at his shoulders and are like, why is. Yeah, then he runs five or six extra yards. And it's like, well, cut him down at his knees.
Starting point is 00:08:19 You're a corner. You're not going to be able to tackle this. 300-pound guy, you know, at the, at your shoulders, which I don't know why they continue to do that after him basically being like a UFC, W.W.E. wrestler against them last year, just throwing guys left and right, and they did the same thing again. So they just got out physical. They didn't, the defense didn't come off the plane, and it looked a lot like they did in the past few years. They got, they got humble. Evan's point. I thought I saw flashbacks of DJ Turner doing his best, Gino Stone,
Starting point is 00:08:51 impression. Oh, boy. On the long run that was called back because of the supposed to hold, he pulled his best rodman flop. It looked like I was watching the World Cup. And they called that a hold. You know, I'm going, this is crazy. The guy turned it down for, you know, business reasons. And he didn't want any part of it. And then he flopped himself on the ground. They got a call back. And then the next play. Med Calf caught a big one. Another 13 yard game, so he made up for it. And what right there was, uh,
Starting point is 00:09:27 when right there's DJ Turner's hands. That was one of the, that's one of the best plays that defender made all day. What do you mean? They actually set the offense backwards. By one yard because of where the holding was and it was half the distance of the goal. Yeah, that's the thing we had to a TFL. Oh, gosh.
Starting point is 00:09:42 Yeah, you might as well. Look, the Bengals played like they wanted to win the game, but they didn't. The Steelers played like they had to win this game. and they did. You go back to, I mean, I go back to the first play of the game. When, if you look at it, so the Steelers on their opening drive, four play, 73 yards touchdown.
Starting point is 00:10:02 First play, Aaron Rogers to Jalen Warren, 30 yards. Five-yard pass, incomplete. Third and five from the Bengals 38, boom, touchdown to Wilson for 38 yards. Mike McCarthy, and coach, you know this. You coached against Mike McCarthy before. He's a smart offensive guy. he knew where to attack this Bengals defense in their weakest links. We'll talk about that in segment two.
Starting point is 00:10:28 But this was so embarrassing to see that Bengals defense have no desire to tackle Jalen Warren. And then Darnell Washington, I get it. He's a different animal on tight end. At least try to gang tackle him. Like at least have one guy start to tackle him and that other guys come and rush in. Where was the rallying to the ball that we saw in the first two weeks? I saw none of that today. Miss tackles and then special teams blunders.
Starting point is 00:10:54 Oh my gosh. The two times the Steelers gave you the ball back, both of which you were up by three points. And with the way your offense was playing, you could have potentially gone on a backbreaking drive for Pittsburgh. But instead you commit a roughing the punter and then you muff the kick. And PJ Jules decided to try and pick the ball up instead of just fall on it.
Starting point is 00:11:16 Like I thought we were beyond these simple mistakes. Apparently not. Well, you know what? That was obvious. And you know what? You look at the great return that Williams had. Yes. One of the big pluses in the game.
Starting point is 00:11:33 And he got the ball out close to midfield, and it was three and out. Yeah. And it was like, whoa, get 20 yards and you've got three, you know? All you got to do is just get two first downs and you at least got three. Then the muff punt of it all is the the jewels part is the crazy part. The muff kicks happen, I guess. This was kind of, man, if I was Charlie Jones, I'd pick up the phone first. Like, hey, do you need a punt returner?
Starting point is 00:12:08 Yeah, no kidding. It's going on over there because I don't think he had this type of muff in such a clutch situation. But the jewels part of it is the bad, is the mental part. And I feel like there's something going on in these late games. We're going to talk about with the offense, but it just feels like there is some coaching issues here in terms of why is he not getting on the ball? Maybe that's just Jules, but there are some other issues going on in these late games.
Starting point is 00:12:34 But that one I couldn't believe because even if Jules picked up the ball, I mean, where are you going? You're just going to go get hit. Like you've spent so much time there. The muff happens. There's guys coming. you don't have time to pick it up and now become the new punt returner. You might have had a celebration in his eyes of like, oh,
Starting point is 00:12:54 and I'm going to be the guy that returns this one 30 yards and wins the game for the team or something. But you've got to just fall on that. You got to know who you are, man. You got to know what this situation is. Muff, punt, you live grenade. And that's what the Steelers did. And it's to Alex's point about having to win the game.
Starting point is 00:13:10 They immediately are sprinting and diving on that ball. Maybe in part, because if you watched last week, they actually had. something similar happened where they had a fumble and it got bobbled, I think three or four times backwards in that in that game. They fell on it. So now they're probably got a big coaching point of fall on these fumbles. It's more important to get the turnover than it is to get yards to, you know, pick up extra yardage here.
Starting point is 00:13:38 You have to make sure you aren't turning the ball over in the red zone in what will be the red zone for them. So you have to follow. possession. That's rule one. Maintain. Find a way, Evan. Yeah. I mean, like Mike said, when the ball's on the ground, you just pick it up, no matter. That's what they teach you on day one when you're playing football. If there's a live ball, you just jump on it.
Starting point is 00:14:03 That's like the easiest thing you can do. And then, you know, it just, you can't have these just like kind of mental lapses where it seems like football 101. And it happens like that. And even like the coaching staff, like Mike said, on that. that last drive they had to call it timeout because I don't know if a play wasn't called or what. So they blew. Substitution. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:14:24 And they blew one before they even were able to run a play. So if obviously if Burr wouldn't have, you know, pull with the ball, we could have needed that. And that was, you know, an error on them. So just sloppy overall. We probably want to wait to do that. But I'm fairly certain that was a substitution. Some guy didn't know he was supposed to get on the field. The officials holding the, holding the ball because the Steelers smartly,
Starting point is 00:14:46 Mike McCarthy, veteran coach, said, let's sub out nose tackles. We're allowed to sub when you sub. So they sent out their nose tackle, take 20 seconds off the clock to do that because you didn't know who was supposed to be on the field on the first play of two-minute drill. Yeah. They had problems in the first quarter. You know, even before the half, they had gone lost too. You know, usually, hey, you know, your offense squandered at three of the six timeouts during the game.
Starting point is 00:15:16 you know, I mean, you're cutting yourself down. Offenses shouldn't take timeouts. You know, defenses do to stop rallies, to stop times and positions. But offense, hey, that thing ought to be clicking. Whoever your personnel guy is, he needs to make sure that it's happening right now. Well, it's frustrating because, I mean, look, the overall frustration is last year was the defense. So this year it's going to be special teams. Great. So now we've got to worry about that. after how great Evan McPherson looked in the first two weeks, and he wasn't an issue today by any means. I mean, he was two-for-two on field goals.
Starting point is 00:15:51 But you think about Keishaw Williams and the muffed pun, and then you think about PJ Jules not falling on the ball, and then Cedric Johnson roughing the punter. You were gifted possessions in this game to where you could have potentially, with the way the opposite is playing, and I'll keep saying this, put the Steelers behind by two scores,
Starting point is 00:16:10 and you didn't. because you gave them the ball back. You gave them 10 points because of your special team's blunders. And Darren Simmons has been around for almost 25 years. I'd like to think this is just a bad game. I hope it's not a bad sign. Because today what I saw was a team that looked like they wanted to win, but they weren't willing to do what it took to beat the Pittsburgh Steelers
Starting point is 00:16:35 on the road in a game that they knew they had to win or else they were going to be two games behind the Bengals in the AFC North. Coming up, go ahead, coach. And now everybody, well, you know, everybody is two and one. Everybody's two and one, except for, you know, the Ravens who are playing right now. Yeah, and they're up 1710. So it looks like for right now at least, everybody in this division is going to be two and one. Coming up next, so much for the goodwill of defense built after two weeks.
Starting point is 00:17:05 Today, their weaknesses got exposed big time. Bangal Squad Show today brought to you by Game Day Men's Health. A quiz on your phone and a box at your door is not a clinic. Book your complimentary test and consult at game day men's health.com. I don't even know where to begin, gentlemen, with the Bengals defense today. At the very least, it's a major step back. I think, you know what? I would agree. You know what? They were rolling. Talk of the league. Like I said before, I think, you know what, people tell you how good you are long enough.
Starting point is 00:18:48 You're going to start to believe them and you no longer think you need to go out there and stay hungry. And today, all three levels were that way. You know, they show where Dexter Lawrence is the only one that's putting hits on the quarterback. He's the only one with two sacks. You know, before they had eight in two games. So where the edge of rushers were, I don't know. You look at in the running game, and I think Mike McCarthy did a great job in terms of their run game plan, is they ran edges when Dexter was in. And then when Dexter came out, because they do rotate so often, they ran the ball down to shoot.
Starting point is 00:19:30 And I think that that was very well thought out in terms of, hey, we can't move this guy. You know what? And he showed it on a couple of plays. You know, and the linebackers, I still don't think that. they could tackle. You know, they were in position and they couldn't. And they didn't. And secondary wise, you know what? They got taken advantage of by not only Metcalf, but and the big tight end, freeze booth was open. Great play design on the one touchdown that nobody, not a safety, picked him up going right down the seam. You know, so there were a lot of mistakes that were gone on,
Starting point is 00:20:10 that we hadn't seen. And I think that the Steelers did a great job of isolating on who the aggressive safety was in terms of the run game. And I think that when they have a matchup, anytime Aaron Rogers saw one-on-one with Ivy and a whiteout, regardless, he was going to take advantage of that. And he did. Because two weeks ago, yeah, two weeks ago against, in the United. in the opener, there were guys flying right by him in man coverage. So they saw it on film and they said, let's see if this guy can run or not. It started with Jalen Davis.
Starting point is 00:20:51 Started Jalen Davis. And I knew right away that the Steelers had clearly game planned very well for this game because the Bengals have been playing so much man covers these third down situations. They line up to the bunch in a 513 lock and level. So they're man to man with a guy across me. They switch release everything. And they've got Jalen Davis against a vertical breaking route. And in my mind immediately flashed to a play that some people were pointed out as like a highlight for Jalen Davis in week one where he recovers on an underthrown ball and makes a pass breakup.
Starting point is 00:21:22 Yes. And my mind went to if Baker Mayfield threw that ball in stride, that's not a Jalen Davis highlight. That is a touchdown, a 70-yard touchdown for, I believe it was a Mecca Egg Buka on that play. The second play of the game. Second play of the game against the Buccaneers. So they saw that, said, let's isolate Jalen Davis. We know he can't run. And they got Roman Wilson against him, which Roman Wilson is probably, that I think is by force because the Bengals are going to try in their man coverage to Max Dax and DJ with Michael Pittman and D.K. Metcalf.
Starting point is 00:21:56 So that just ends up being your matchup. That's probably also why they're level, lock and level on this, making sure we don't end up with Jalen Davis on D.K. Metcalf or whoever in this situation. So when he releases outside, Roman Wilson is sprinting up the field. I've never seen a corner look slower in my life than Jalen Davis trying to keep up with him. And it is a walk-in touchdown because he actually threw the ball in stride to Davis. It seemed like Davis got benched in this game because you saw a lot of Taccario Davis. So it seemed like Jailen Davis wasn't on the field as much. Maybe I'm wrong.
Starting point is 00:22:27 And maybe Tocario just came in for a few snaps and picked up penalties and whatever else was going on there. But it seemed like after that they thought we can't play with Jail and Davis on the field in the same way. because we want to play man coverage against these guys. And we can't do that when they can pick on one of our corners like this. So that's where it all started where I knew that the Steelers had done a specific game plan to take on the bangles. And like coach was saying, perimeter runs when Dex is in. And when he comes out, run it up the gut and take on this defensive tackles. We're playing well before this.
Starting point is 00:23:02 But I think you run right at those linebackers, force them to make tackles, make these guys run side to side. and then also, it's kind of what you're saying, you put Jordan Battle in a run-pass conflict with a guy releasing through the B-gap. He loves crashing down hard in those situations. So you just run right by him. And that was the second touchdown. So it really did feel like, for what it's worth,
Starting point is 00:23:25 Mike McCarthy did game plan well for this game to take care of some cracks you see on film. Like you see Jordan Battle just crashing really hard when runs are at him. And nobody took advantage of it yet, but he said, for 30 years. Here's a play that we could do to take advantage.
Starting point is 00:23:42 That was put a fast guy at fullback, have him release up through the B gap right at that safety, and he can just keep running right by him because he's going to want to make a play, make a highlight, make a tackle. You know, that's the thing that's going on right now. Everybody's got, in next week, they've got three games films.
Starting point is 00:24:00 Now they at least had two. And they said, they're not changing. Why aren't they going to change? Because they're rolling. Don't disrupt the boat when the boat's failing smooth. Evan? Yeah, I mean, the secondary, obviously, like Mike said, Mike McCarthy did a good job at game planning on targeting the weaklings of the secondary, Jalen Davis, and Jordan Battle. And, you know, both of those touchdowns, they had about five or six yards in between them, and they were wide open.
Starting point is 00:24:31 And then you have the crossing route in the end zone where Daxill and D.J. Turner just basically knock each other out of the play. and D.K. Metcalfe and Michael Pittman are open, just choose your guy and, you know, toss it to him. So that was, you know, those are just killers when you just have guys wide open constantly. And I think as good as the defense was the first few weeks, I do think it's interesting. If the defensive line isn't dominating, if they're not getting four sacks to game, if they're not creating pressures, if they're not making the quarterback's life uncomfortable. and he could just come and pick apart the secondary and the linebackers, how good is this defense actually going to be if the defensive line isn't the one,
Starting point is 00:25:12 you know, being the aggressors and making a bunch of plays. And we saw Miles Murphy and Boeimafi were no shows. The a judge just didn't do anything. Dexter Lawrence was the only one able to really put pressure on Aaron Rogers. And Aaron Rogers missed a handful of throws that he probably should have made that could have, you know, gone for bigger plays if he would have made those throws.
Starting point is 00:25:31 And so it is a little concerning that, you know, the first two weeks the talk was on the defensive line, on the defensive line, and they get neutralized in this game, and then the mistakes and problems of last year rear their ugly head again. And so I think as well as the defense played, the beginning of the first two games, I do think if the defensive line doesn't dominate, I think it was concerning how picked apart that the rest of the guys were. And, you know, DJ Turner, I think, is still a good corner. Dax Hill had made a few plays, but they were just able to pinpoint point the guys that they that were the wink leaks and attack and attack them.
Starting point is 00:26:05 And obviously when you have explosive plays and miss tackles and you're not, you're the, the offenses in front of the chains, they're not in obvious passing situations. And you can't let your edge rushers kind of just run, pin their ears back and run. And it's also a good game plan on the Steelers to not run the ball at the guy who's been dominating the run and Dexter Lawrence run outside of them.
Starting point is 00:26:28 Make these edge rushers play and run defense. And they weren't really able to do that. And once Jalen Warren broke the first level, he was able to shake tackles and turn a, you know, four or five-yard run into a 10-to-15-yard run, and you're not going to win games when you let up so many explosive runs and allow a 42-year-old quarterback to maneuver the pocket and be able to put the ball where it wants. Worth noting Brian Cook out. Oh, it was worth noting Brian Cook missed a lot of this game, too. I think that you're talking about these explosive runs. We're talking about guys getting back there. Would some of these plays have ended up being more like 20 yards than 40 if you had,
Starting point is 00:27:02 Brian Cook, their best safety available, but he wasn't there. There was a lot of injuries in this game. A lot of guys got banged up. I mean, Mike Kosicki got banged up and came back in the game and they had that touchdown in the fourth quarter, but Kobe Young left with a knee injury. And I was on the Bengals first play from scrimmage. Jalen Warren at 17 carries for 127 yards. And you were gifted his biggest run of the game being called back by a hole.
Starting point is 00:27:26 So what do you do later in the drive? Let him run up the same gap again. I mean, did anyone want to, you know, maybe put a hand on him with the line of scrimmage? I mean, here's the crazy stat for today's game. The Bengals had two sacks and three tackles for loss today. Dexter Lawrence had both sacks and all three tackles for loss. The others? No shows.
Starting point is 00:27:48 Boy, my faith, one tackle. Chris Jenkins Jr., one tackle. Miles Murphy, shut out. Like, to Evan, your point, if this defensive line is not winning the line of scrimmage, we saw this Bengals' weaknesses, are still prevalent. The linebackers still can't cover. Dax can't cover. He commits penalties. They had a crucial PI on third and one. Secondary has had penalties, holding penalties, whatever it may be, and the linebackers can't get to the edge. They're slow. Pittsburgh new to all
Starting point is 00:28:18 of your guys's points. Mike McCarthy knew. If we get to the perimeter and if we attack the Bengals linebackers, we're going to have success. And that's exactly what happened. That's exactly what happened the day. So they were gashing them with runs to the outside and away from Dexter Lawrence. Imagine that, not running up the middle. Darno, Washington. The Steelers today went big at the line of scrimmage and the Bengals had no answer for it. None. That's it. You know, that's what they prided themselves all camp was when you go 12 personnel, two tight ends, two whiteouts and a back, that because of their five bigs, basically, the two outside linebackers being Maffa and whether it be Cassius HAL or be a stand-up Miles Murphy,
Starting point is 00:29:15 that you weren't going to be able to run. But that forces you're right there as which one of those two guys do you want to drop if they're going to rock and roll and play zone covers. if not, they know you're in man. And now you've got to match up with the big kid, the big tight end against an inside linebacker or a safety if they're playing man free. Ooh, that's a physical mismatch. Well, it's a linebacker who's still a physical mismatch in terms of just the physicality, too.
Starting point is 00:29:48 I think the idea of this like five-man front and playing nickel to this 12 personnel is a good idea. until that tight end is 310 pounds and maybe their best blocker pound for pound. Like it's, that worked great when you face Dalton Schultz, who's a great receiver, but you know, an okay blocker combined with like Foster Moreau, which is kind of same thing or whatever else is going on over there. The Steelers, they have their own unique weapon in Darnell, Washington. So you should have a game plan that is a little bit more unique when he gets onto the field. I think you have to play some type of base there.
Starting point is 00:30:27 And maybe they did, and I missed it. But it did feel like some of this was kind of, we're still going to play 12. We're going to force, you know, you have to run the ball. And they did. And they did it really well. So that's disconnect here. And if they were playing base to it, it sure didn't feel like it. It didn't feel like they had their big bodies on the field when the Steelers went 12 personnel.
Starting point is 00:30:49 They weren't stopping the run at the very least and just getting gashed over their heads. It's like they couldn't do anything. Well, you know what? There was a lot of talk during training camp that they were playing kind of an odd front and then playing coverage behind it. And that's how they were going to stop the run, which was basically a jam front or a bare defense up front. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:31:14 Hard to run in the middle. But you know what? I have not seen that this year. I've seen a lot of over, you know, three techniques of the tight end side, true nose and Dexter Lawrence. or seen under three technique to the split-inside and Dexter Lawrence over the nose. And so I haven't seen that variation of what they, what I thought they were going to try to be in in base defense. And I didn't notice it today.
Starting point is 00:31:41 Evan. Yeah, I mean, it was just like they were just getting out physicaled on the line and they, the effort was poor at times. And against Darnell Washington, who yes, is a one-of-a-kind tied in. at 300 pounds and to be able to move the way he is. But you saw what he did to them last year where he was dominant again and caused a lot of problems. And I felt like their game plan was basically the same as it was last year to just let
Starting point is 00:32:07 one corner or like you said, Alex, there wasn't any gang tackling on and letting him kind of just shake off tackles and run wild. And, you know, tight ends have been a problem for the Bengals defense last year. It was a problem last week. And it was a problem again this week. And I think, you know, some of that's on the line. linebackers. And I think, you know, we put a lot of stuff on the linebackers to improve with Demetri St. Knight and Barrett Carter and, you know, through three games, I don't really know if they
Starting point is 00:32:34 have or not. And, you know, even when Knight went down for a few plays in this game, you know, Orrin Brooks came in and he had a few tackles. But that's one of the thinner positions on the team. So if, you know, God forbid, a injury comes up there, then that's, you know, again, another real problem that comes up even if you have, you know, Cash's house in a kind of a hybrid linebacker. He went the complete opposite way on one of the coverages and like a really easy curl go for a lot. But yeah, just I felt like they got out physicaled on the offensive, on the defensive front.
Starting point is 00:33:08 They were moving him down the field with pretty much ease. And the only person really making a difference or making any sort of plays was Dexter Lawrence. And that's not a recipe for success when one out of your five or six. defensive lineman trying to actually get through a tackle. I think you have to just have a video board of Darno Washington running through this defense before the Sunday night game. Just keep that up there as a reminder of what just happened to you. Don't let it happen again like it happened last year.
Starting point is 00:33:38 Like it's been happening to you every time you face this 300 pound behemoth. Yeah. And by the way, this stat just blows my mind. but I'll say it. Pittsburgh had one offensive touchdown through two games coming into this week. They had two in the first quarter today. First time, it's either scoring over seven or double-digit points in the first quarter in over four years. Yeah, you were feeling good about yourselves coming into today's game. And let's just say that Pittsburgh Steelers gave you a piece of humble pie and a big one. at that up next, something that may be coming part of the Bengals identity that could lead
Starting point is 00:34:23 to disaster. David Harrison here at the Locked on Commanders podcast, talk about butcher box. Starting point is 00:35:34 I appreciate all of you hanging out with us this afternoon after the Bengals fall to the Pittsburgh Steelers 30 to 27 in Pittsburgh now two and one on the season. There's a chance that all four teams in the AFC North can be two and one after day. All right. Seven, 12, and six. Those numbers are the number of penalties in each game for the Bengals this season. Guys, I'm worried. I am very worried that penalties and particularly untimely penalties may be becoming a part of this team's identity. And if it is, at the worst time this year, it's going to hit and it's going to be crushing.
Starting point is 00:36:12 No doubt. You know what? The crazy thing about the penalties is they aren't aggressive penalties. No. They're pre-snap. penalties. They're dumb mistakes that a professional football player should not make, should not have a wide out jumping off sides. All they got to do is look at the ball. You don't need to hear the cadence because it doesn't matter to you. Up front, you're not going to get an advantage.
Starting point is 00:36:42 You just don't want to be in a situation that puts you back five yards that's now a disadvantage. And the pre-stamp penalties will kill any football team. And right now, they have not reared their ugly head yet until the day. But they will, if those aren't addressed and you don't get any more, and I'm sure they're getting fined in the building for each of those penalties are in their room, the offensive line room or the wide out room. They're getting their own individual fines. But you know what?
Starting point is 00:37:16 they got to nip that in the bud or it's going to come back and haunt and kill you yeah i this felt the best for the penalties last two weeks i understand they won those games but it was you said it seven and twelve compared to six today and most of those last two weeks were false starts and off sides this time you had a mims offside that was weird it is still there you still had the uh You had a false start on the offensive line. And then you had, like coach said, that false start on a wide receiver should just never be happening. You can't be false starting as a wide receiver. You're setting the team back for what?
Starting point is 00:37:59 But then some of the other stuff was weird. Obviously, I think the kick is what you're talking about. Alex, you reared its ugly head in the worst moment is the blocked punt attempt to rough the punter and give up 15 yards. The only reason they are punting is because Rogers missed the throw. If you remember, it's a stop and go down the left side line. It would have been an explosive play again. But thankfully, Rogers missed the throw. This goes back to the special teams a little bit.
Starting point is 00:38:29 If I'm the special teams coordinator, why would I call a play that puts myself in a position to give the ball, to mess up, to rough the punter, to run into the punter? I feel like it is very tough to call the punt block in that situation. I know it's kind of hard both ways because you look at it. You're saying it's about midfield. They're probably going to get a good punt. Johnston's a good punter. But I would look at that fourth and one, even if this wasn't roughing, it would have been a first down.
Starting point is 00:38:56 So fourth and two, whatever it was. I really tough, really tough for me to justify a punt block call there. I'm not a special team's coordinator. But in my head, you got lucky that they got off the field in the first place. Let's accept the gift of the punt. This offense has been rolling and keep this moving. it's frustrating. The penalties are frustrating.
Starting point is 00:39:17 I think the penalties get better. This is just one of those things that I do have some optimism about. Just because they've been better, they've been one of the better teams that not being penalized the past however many years with Zach Taylor. So I think this gets better. But it did cost them today. I think as your point, Alex,
Starting point is 00:39:35 it's going to cost you in the worst moment. I think it happened. I think the roughing the punter penalty is probably something that swung. Well, it did swinging. a seven point, if not more, swing in there because it went from punning the ball to scoring a touchdown. And now you're looking at the ball game. So that to me is we already had the experience. They were better on offense to start the year.
Starting point is 00:39:59 And for whatever reason, instead of having a really slow starting offense, it was kind of slow the first two weeks. And this week it was good. They had the sloppiest team for the first couple of weeks. So whatever, they always have to have something wrong going on these first. few weeks. Evan? Yeah, the block, the roughing the punter one is just a backbreaker in every sense.
Starting point is 00:40:23 You just, it's just, you have to be smart about that. And like Mike said, you were, you caught a break with them not completing that pass. And the offense to that point had been humming and they'd been able to move the ball pretty effectively. And you, I mean, a field goal in that, and if you get the ball back, get a field goal, that changes, that completely changes the, the, difference of the game and then you have that real mental air where he just runs right into the plant leg of the punter and then they go down and drive score touchdown fairly easily after that and
Starting point is 00:40:55 so that was a seven point swing and then you know obviously the a lot of them have been mental errors as well like the the wide receiver fall starts or the off sides a few weeks ago where they're just lining up lining up in the neutral zone or you know mims had that questionable one where he was behind the line of scrimmage, which was, you know, I don't know exactly if that one was legit or not. But a lot of them have just been mental errors. And like you said, Alex, you would want to see that get better. And then in this game, penalties were one of the, that roughing the kicker penalty or roughing the punter penalty was the biggest one of the game. That turned the complete tie of the game. And if that doesn't happen, we might be sitting
Starting point is 00:41:34 here talking about a bengal squeaking out a win. But unfortunately, that was a seven-point swing. And those are mistakes that just cannot happen if this team wants to get to where they want to. than if they want to be a playoff team and can compete with some of the best. Because when you play against these really good disciplined teams and you're the undisciplined team, then that's going to kill you. Yeah. 648 in the third quarter was when Pittsburgh pun in and the Bengals were up three. At that point, you're thinking, okay, the Bengals just caught a break.
Starting point is 00:42:03 Rogers missed a throw down the sideline. There was pressure, which may have impacted the throw. You're going to get the ball back. Your offense is in rhythm. you turn Pittsburgh over the end of the first half, you scored off it with that great T. Higgins touchdown. You get the ball back and you go down, forget a field goal, Evan. If you go and get a touchdown there, you're up 10.
Starting point is 00:42:24 And you put Pittsburgh in that situation to where they can run the ball and they're going to throw. But we'll never know what happened because of one dumb penalty. It's dumb. It's dumb. It's exactly what it is. Backbreaking. instead of having that chance to knock out Pittsburgh in the third quarter on their home turf, you gave them life and they took advantage of it. How many five-yard penalties were there on defense today?
Starting point is 00:42:51 And how many have there been throughout the course of the first three games? So on defense, it's an automatic first down. A lot of five-yard penalties offensively. Go to the second quarter when the Bengals made it 14 to 10. Well, great, except there was a play. T. Higgins, 13-yard reception on third and four, wiped out due to an illegal formation by Amarius Mims. Good God, his right leg was like five yards behind the line of scrimmage. You just got to know where you are on the field.
Starting point is 00:43:22 In week one, it was four off-sides penalties. Like a lot of these penalties, and I'm hopeful, Mike, to your point, that they got it out of their system severely in the first three weeks in this game where it cost them to where they'll be better and more buttoned up as an operation on all three units. but by golly, some of them are just dumb. And I've watched Bengals teams throughout my life, lose games on stupid penalties, especially against Pittsburgh.
Starting point is 00:43:54 And that's exactly what happened today. At one point, do mistakes become part of your identity? That's a valiant question that we have to ask right now after this game. Well, you know what? they have truly in all three games. They've all had their damages done. And that is one, I know that the defense is going to meet long and hard tomorrow and get this game done. And the leaders in the room will take control of it, which they need to.
Starting point is 00:44:29 And they will be better or be like they were that they're not there yet by any means. And you know what? And on offense, I have not seen a team, an offensive football team, in more third and short situations as the Bengals were today. They were in third and two or third and four all day. And they weren't in those drastic unfavorable third down situations. Which is good. So they recovered. You know, they somewhat recovered from some of those penalties. but you can't ask Joe Borough to do it all. Sometimes everybody else, that's what creates a team.
Starting point is 00:45:14 That creates a unit when everybody is on cue and everybody's clicking with it. And as far as special teams concerned, hey, do your job. Just do your job. And that's all they have to do. You don't have to do anything special. You don't have to throw your body. When you get close and you're in front of the punter, that's time to. back off. You don't keep following through to where somebody can shove you into them.
Starting point is 00:45:42 You just got to slow yourself down as being an interior rusher on punt on punt cover. Yeah, you know what's interesting is like this past weekend was the 20th anniversary of the Steve Gleeson block kick in New Orleans. Go watch that play. And yeah, the Saints designed that play. That's not just, you know, someone where Steve Gleason just happened to block a button. Now that play was designed. Okay. I don't know what the Bengals were doing on that. If they were trying to go for a block, fine. Why? You just got the ball back.
Starting point is 00:46:11 Your defense finally got a stop that wasn't on a turnover. And by the way, Keishaw Williams, not just a muffed pun, that kickoff return to start the second half. What is he doing there? I mean, I know we're talking about penalties right now, and I hope that we don't have to have many conversations about this again, but you heard a lot of guys in the locker room after the game today say, a lot of it was self-inflicted.
Starting point is 00:46:35 You're darn right, it was. Better flush it out now in week three, albeit against a division rival, than in week 10 when you host them at home. And now you kind of have to win that game because you lost this game. Yeah. The really hard part is like we've been kind of hammering. This was the worst team in the league by points scored per game. Jacksonville is the fifth best.
Starting point is 00:47:02 So is it going to be better? and I understand that the Buccaneers were a better offense to the Steelers. Texas office looks brutal every week outside of the Bills game. So I'm not sure about that one. Maybe that was just a matchup for them or something. What's it going to look like when you face, and in my opinion from my estimates from looking around, your first really good offense.
Starting point is 00:47:25 The first really good offense you play, what is it going to look like? I think that is the question that's burning on my mind for next week and going, because I'm trying to put this past, look to the next week. of the, what's it going to look like? Because to me, it's going to look a heck of a lot like last year and the year before where Joe Burrow, you better be ready to score 40 because I don't see how this defense is
Starting point is 00:47:45 going to make enough stops against the Jaguars after having this game against the Steelers. Yeah, well, and you hope that the leadership is able to get them in positions to where they can. But you talk about penalties, if you give Jacksonville an automatic first down and like, you know, between the 40s, look out because they have a kicker who has an absolute bomb. of a leg. So you better be buttoned up in all three phases, especially when it comes to limiting penalties and limiting self-inflictions next week. Coming up, we have to revisit a conversation that's tough and quite frankly, I don't want to, but we got to anyway. Welcome to your most rewarding NFL season ever with Fanduel. I don't like having this conversation, but I feel like after today it is worth mention. So Joe Burrow, on the Bengals Final Drive, fumbles, games over.
Starting point is 00:49:33 Now, I've been seen tweets from media members and fans say that, you know, do we know if this basically hinting and implying that, hey, do the Steelers actually recover the ball? Maybe Eric Cole or somebody else was on it. Why are we even going to try to have this conversation? Because Joe Borough fumbled the ball. And I, and I, it irks me because he was tremendous today. Prior to that, he was not sacked one time. But he was on that one play.
Starting point is 00:50:06 And it goes back to this conversation. Joe Burrow in the clutch and went trailing. It's tough because there's not really a lot of moments that you can point to and say he did that. Well, you know what they, and it was. I mean, that is, he was trying to create. And you don't take that away from him. You know, Joe, keep doing what you're doing. just in a crowd
Starting point is 00:50:39 can sustain I mean sustain the football don't carry it loose don't carry it outside of your body but protect it until you can break that containment and get your eyes back downfield and that's one thing
Starting point is 00:50:57 that most playmakers have to do they have to continue to learn and you got to remember he has not been in that situation all camp all year And that's why there needs to be some situations where the quarterback, and you can't just hit a bag at him and let him roll out and let him do those things because that's unrealistic. You have to put the game back in the game.
Starting point is 00:51:23 And that's the first time he did it. I know that there's no one feels worse on that football team than Joe Burrow right now. And I think that when he's put under the gun, he's going to win a lot more than he loses. and we just got to let this play this thing. It's not something that happens all the time. We've got to let this play out and let Joe come to the front, take ownership of it, move on, and don't put yourself in that situation again.
Starting point is 00:51:52 The thing that I was wondering, it was, were they trying to get the ball down so they could tie it up, or were they trying to win it at that particular point on? If they were trying to win it, those routes were further down the field, and he couldn't find them. If he was trying to check it down like he did earlier in the game, because believe me, they were given those tackles plenty of help. That's why a majority of his yards came from checkdowns to the tight ends
Starting point is 00:52:18 and to the backs coming out of the backfield. They had a lot of those. And then T and Jammar did what they do. They caught a lot of balls today, and it was awesome. It was great. But he could, I don't know what they were trying to do offensively or what he was trying to do, whether it was trying to, hey, he got, arguably the best kicker in the league?
Starting point is 00:52:38 Do you want to tie it up and take it to overtime and know that you got the worst offense in the first two weeks scoring offense to try to have them beat you in OT? Or do you think you can win it in overtime? Yeah, I don't know what their thought process was. I was so frustrated. I wanted to talk about this two-minute drill this entire time. Okay. So how on a kickoff, your first play of the two-minute drill?
Starting point is 00:53:05 I brought this up a little bit. How do you not know who is supposed to be on the field? How are you making a substitution with, what, 25, 30 seconds left, which of course gives the defense because anytime the offense substitutes, the defense gets their chance to substitute as well and every smart coach in the league when you make a substitution, and they see, oh, what's that I say, 16 seconds on the clock. Hey, we want to actually change those tackles.
Starting point is 00:53:30 Hey, yeah, yeah, black, come running all the way over here. And make sure you jog. and we're going to send out whatever other big guy, Keanu Benton, to go jog his way out there. And that's why Burroughs getting so frustrating because you see the official saying he's got his arms out, which means that we're stopping this for the substitution. But the clock's rolling. And they didn't reset the clock.
Starting point is 00:53:49 So it's not an official issue. The officials didn't have a problem with the clock. So they are stopping the clock for that substitution, which means the Bengals made a bad, weird substitution on their first play. I don't know how you're not ready for the first play of two-minute drill after getting the kick. So they burn the time out. This comes back to haunt them because you're looking at this game again. Get the ball a little bit down the field.
Starting point is 00:54:11 The late checkdown that Burrow had was, I think, probably the worst decision because I don't even see the upside. He threw it to Chase Brown. Again, blows my mind. Throw it as feet. Don't make him catch this ball because he will catch it because he's supposed to catch the ball when he gets thrown at him. He won't swat it down. Not everybody's Larry Fitzgerald in that situation. So he caught the ball, got tackled for a loss.
Starting point is 00:54:33 what was it, 30 seconds that came off the clock from just all the receivers had to run their way all the way back down the field, line up, Burroughs, making changes at the line. And that clock wouldn't even be running if you threw it at his feet. So that's the really frustrating part about Burrow. And then the right guard, Dalton Reisner is peeing down his leg as as Derek Harmon lifts him off his feet. And then it's a push-pool swim move. He's not even connected to him anymore. He was turned around the other way watching as Harmon, pit burrow and yes that is very frustrating i think to be joe burrow in that situation of having a free
Starting point is 00:55:10 runner not a guy that is making trying to make a constrained one arm tackle against you that maybe you could pocket maneuver around but a true free runner at you he wants to make a play here and not get a sack and you think about why don't you want to get a sack because you just wasted 30 seconds you only have one time out because you wasted one earlier and you just had to waste one on a six substitution on the first play. If they had two timeouts there, I think either you either call a timeout after the checkdown that got tackled for a loss or maybe Burrow feels more okay taking the sack because he says, this sucks, but we're going to have to call a timeout.
Starting point is 00:55:49 We've got two timeouts left. We can still regroup and score here. If he takes a sack there, you're probably taking the last timeout you have. And now you've moved from a pretty decent chance to tie to a pretty bad chance to tie because you're either sprinting back and running a play or taking your last. time out and getting ready to run some type of, you know, spike drill that and set up a field goal that way if you get there. So that blew my mind in terms of how bad it was in that two-minute drill. And it all starts with you cannot as an NFL head coach take a timeout on the first
Starting point is 00:56:22 play of the two-minute drill because you don't know who's supposed to be on the field. That's just unacceptable. I don't see that anywhere in the league. If you're practicing that in training camp every day and in the preseason. Why is it surface in week three against Pittsburgh? When you have an opportunity to go win the game. Now, coach, to what you were saying earlier, Mike, that was a great explanation there on the two-minute drill. I think Joe Borough was playing to win the game there. Like if he takes a sack there, and again, Mike, to your point, if he has two timeouts, he probably takes a sack, Bengals call a timeout. All right, reset. Coach, you said the Bengals were good at overcoming sacks or in today's case,
Starting point is 00:56:59 penalties. All right, so you get a few yards back. You get back into field goal range. But because there was only one time out, Joe Borough felt like he had to make a play and he didn't. And the whole narrative of Fiffy's clutch, all right? He hasn't been in a lot of situations because the defense has been so bad. And then he's been trying to put away the game and maybe the Bengals have not. They did in week one. He led the Bengals on a game tying touchdown, drive. against the Ravens on Thursday night football in week 10, but they decided to go for two. They missed it.
Starting point is 00:57:33 They lost the game. They didn't win against the Chargers. They couldn't put away the game against the Ravens in week five of that year in 24. He had a touchdown that was dropped by Tyler Boyd in week 10 and 23. So is it all on Burroughs? Is it all on Borough? No. It's not.
Starting point is 00:57:48 But part of it is. But the other reason is coaching was bad in the two-minute drill today. The execution was not there. Evan, what did you see? Yeah, I think it more. comes down to coaching and execution. I think in a handful of, you know, the clutch plays that Burrow might have missed. I think, you know, some of that obviously is to blame on him.
Starting point is 00:58:10 But some of it is the play calling and the just inexcusable stuff like we saw, like what Mike was saying about the wasting timeouts and everything. And, I mean, Dalton Reisner should not just get blown off the ball like that and just pushed into Joe Burroughs lap within like a second and a half. And then Joe has to step up. And usually one of the best things that he does is he always puts two hands on the ball when he's moving up the pocket and is able to hold on to it. But I think like Mike said, because he didn't have a timeout or that second timeout, he felt that he had to, I think he was trying to either throw the ball away or he was trying to make some sort of play and trying to be Superman, trying to make the right play. And then, you know, the ball just got tipped out of his hands.
Starting point is 00:58:56 And obviously you can't have that knowing, you know, in the situation is like you're in field goal range. So if you get sacked, like, yes, it's, you know, not good, but you have to protect the ball first and foremost. And obviously, you don't want to take a sack there. But I don't think that was all Brough's fault. I think it was just kind of the play got blown up. He tried to, he tried to make the most of it. And it backfired and he got tipped out of his hand. But the reality is this offense is as star-studded as it is, has had times where fourth quarter,
Starting point is 00:59:26 need a big drive and they come empty handed and it's happened more times than I'd like to say and so you would you would hope that that would be bigger and we've seen Joe have this fair share of clutch moments throughout his career but at times yeah it is it is concerning that he's not time and time again like some of the quarterbacks he's compared to but I don't think it's all his fault I think sometimes the execution is bad the production breaks on them pretty quickly and I think some of the coaching either the play calling or the execution also struggles at times. Two drives today with the score tied to 27 or excuse me, it was tied to 27 the first time and then it was 30 27.
Starting point is 01:00:07 Punt, fumble, and you had good field position on both times. I mean, the Bengals, again, they had chances to put this game away or go win the game and they didn't. And now they're two and one. A huge home game next Saturday or Sunday, excuse me, against the Jacksonville Jaguars 1 o'clock. on CBS at Paycor Stadium. Got about a minute left. Straight up, yes or no? Does this loss change your outlook for the season?
