10 months ago, Joe Burrow and the Bengals were shut out at home 24-0-0 against the Ravens.
It was perhaps the lowest point for Joe Burrow in the Bengals and Burroughs career.
But after a seismic off-season and a three-and-two starts the season,
Burrow and the Bengals had the opportunity to flip narratives both locally and nationally Sunday at Baltimore.
And brings you back to 2021.
You know what? The key is being able to stop the run.
Stop that two-headed beast in Derek Henry.
and Lamar, and I think that they've got a great chance.
On the other side, it's got to be a Trey Hendrickson story.
The revenge game, the apology, the forgiveness.
Let's see what kind of game we see out of Trey Hendrickson this weekend.
Plus, our keys to the game, including one that helped coach your son and the New Orleans Saints
beat the Ravens back in week two.
Today, it's the Bengals Squad.
Everything Cincinnati Bengals every week.
Breaking down all the big hits.
and game-changing plays from the Queen City,
the way only the Lockdown Podcast Network can.
From the jungle to the playoffs,
the Bengals Squad Show starts now.
Good afternoon. It is Friday, October 23rd, 2026.
This is Bengals right here on Lockdown Bengals
and the Lockdown Podcast Network celebrating 10 years of your team
every day with Jake Lisco and coach Art Valero.
I'm Alex Frank. We're brought to you today by Fandual.
Make this your most rewarding.
season ever with Fan Dual Rewards Club every week. Check the Fan Dual app to see what's waiting for you.
What's waiting for us on Sunday is a massive AFC North showdown between the Bengals and the Baltimore Ravens
kickoff at 1 o'clock on CBS. Jake and Joe will be live after the game and then it will be me,
coach Mike Santagana and Evan Stacey on the Bengals Squad show. This is a massive game, gentlemen.
Let's not sugarcoat that. Jake, you and Joe have had many conversations about in the lockdown
Bengals is a sweet coach.
We had a conversation about it, of course, on Tuesday's Bengals Squad Show.
I turned it over to you guys.
In terms of Zach Taylor, and this may be the biggest regular season game he's ever coached in,
how significant of a game is this to you guys and do you think to Bengals head coach, Zach Taylor?
Well, you know what I think it's big.
Reason why is you never want to go down and lose a game in the ASC.
north so it's big from that standpoint they got to draw back to even you know having being one-on-one
in the north so i think it's big and i think that uh everybody has kind of shot for this one in the
Pittsburgh game uh as being you know because you have to win these games in order to
solidify where your spot's going to be in the playoffs down the road so I think it's big and
far as Zach's concerned, I think they're all big at this point, Doc. You can kind of see how
his style is changing a little bit. Not that he's feeling pressure, but he's just demanding more
out of the players. I think that Zach knows that if things don't go well this year, that could be
the end of his time in Cincinnati. That's part of where the quote unquote pressure is coming from,
whether or not Zach's feeling it or how he's reacting to it is, as you say, coach, a different
conversation, but in the history of
Zach Taylor and Joe Burrow and Cincinnati, I wonder if this
is the biggest game. It's a big game. If we were to go through
the history and like power rank the biggest games, I wonder where it would be.
The reason being it's week seven. It's a little bit early in the season,
but the playoff implications for a game this early in the season are pretty
staggering. There are a lot of division games in the NFL this week that are
similar in terms of the stakes at play here where, you know,
Dallas and Philadelphia, Philadelphia is not a quarterback, but
in the NFC east it's a little bit open this year if the if the Eagles can win that game
that could be a big deal if they can write the ship but for the Ravens and the Bengals one of
these two teams is dropping to O and two in the AFC North and that's obviously not where you want
to be and on the other side you got the Browns who I think are still absolute pretenders and
are eventually going to plummet back down to the earth and leave a massive crater
they have the two wins in the AFC North right now so
So obviously a big game because you want to get the win over who I think is the other chief
opponent in the AFC North race, unless Pittsburgh once again sneaks out of the division,
which could, I guess, theoretically happen.
But for the division race, absolutely massive game with huge playoff implications in terms of the Ravens' ability to win the division if they drop this game,
the Bengals' likelihood to make the playoffs or not if they drop this game.
They're going to have to win at some point one of these tough games on this.
schedule and no time like the present to get it done.
Zach Taylor's in year eight.
This is his 129th game, regular season and playoffs.
Jesse Mentors in his first season as a Bengals head coach.
Taylor has more experience in big games.
Now, you can question his coaching in some of those big games,
but the reality is he has more experience.
The Bengals have the healthier team.
And for that, this is a game to go out there and prove that you are the better team.
But I also think about it this way.
And Jake, you alluded to it when you talked about where does this rank among the biggest regular season games in Zach Taylor's tenure.
Well, that cathartic 2021 season that I mentioned in the cold open when the Bengals went to the Super Bowl,
I think if you had asked Bengals fans that night of Super Bowl 56, if they would win a Super Bowl in the next three to five years,
I think a majority of them would have said yes with what it felt like the direction this franchise was heading.
And that season was so cathartic that it did feel like a matter of when this team was going to,
win the Super Bowl. We'll get Jake back here in just a minute.
Coach, it just felt like a matter of when this team was finally going to win the Lombardi
trophy. Well, here we are now five years removed from that 2021 season. And it feels like,
you know, Bengals fans have just been waiting and waiting for them to get back to the Super
Bowl. And it just, it has not happened yet. But the last three years in particular have been
where this team and the fans, the elephant in the room is only,
gotten bigger. The angst, the anger, the frustration, if this team was ever going to win a Super Bowl,
here's another opportunity for you to recreate those feelings, albeit with a different team,
that we experienced in 2021 by going into Baltimore and winning this game on Sunday.
This is an opportunity being laid out right in front of you. Go out there and take it.
Well, of course. I mean, it is. And I don't believe there's anybody in that locker room.
that doesn't feel that way because they all know what's at stake and they don't want to disappoint
themselves and they don't want to disappoint each other and I think that their expectations going in
and there was a lot of talk about fast starts and believe me they might be in in that room
they're not the only they're not satisfied with being three and two they know that it was a
out there. And now it's learning from those lessons of those true defeats. And they could be
who knows where. The one thing that is very, very true, and Bengal fans know it. It is so
difficult to get to the playoffs, to win a game, and let alone show up on Valentine's Day of next year.
I mean, that is so hard to get there.
The ball's got to roll your way.
Health-wise, you got to stay healthy.
But you know what?
It comes down to showing up every game and treating them all like their playoff games.
Now, you say, is that capable of doing that in 17 weeks?
No, probably not.
At some point in time, you're going to drop your gloves like a fighter.
and you're going to get hit in the face.
But the key is you've got to carry those gloves up high.
You've got to keep punching and let the chips fall where they may.
And I think that this is very, very important to the organization, to the team,
and, you know, the leaders on the team.
And I think that that's why you can throw everything else out.
And that's why they play the game on Sunday.
And it's going to be a great game.
And, hey, we'll see what happens.
I think it'll end up being very, very exciting.
And I think that the Bengals, I mean, I myself, we won a Super Bowl in 2002, and everything was great.
And hey, we got another one.
Whoa.
Slow down.
Unfortunately, the football gods don't allow you to do that.
And if you are, then you built a dynasty la, New England, Kansas City.
Pittsburgh back in the day, you built yourselves to be able to play that way.
Really hard to do.
But that does underline the importance of this game for an early season game,
especially quite important.
Because I was thinking about what the other ones might be.
And you think about in 2021 and 2022,
they had division clenching games.
Those were obviously huge games.
They did it against Kansas City back in 2021.
That was a pretty big game at the time.
Going into it was a pretty big game.
It showed the Bengals or helped to affirm to the Bengals that,
hey, yeah, we can go toe to toe with these leaders in the AFC,
and we did it in a game that's going to win us in a division.
And it's a similar feeling, I think, for this game.
The caveat being is you're going to have another chance of the Ravens later this year at home
in a huge Thursday night New Year's Eve game,
and that's going to be potentially a bigger game than this one.
So, you know, we don't want to get too far ahead of ourselves
and crown this game when we have these other crazy games later this year
against divisional opponents and those sorts of things.
that New Year's Eve game, obviously going to be a big one.
But you can really change a narrative around your team around the fan base,
I think, that still is very skeptical of this team after the last few years,
where they've had the pieces, they've had on paper the talent in many of these years.
And then the plan didn't necessarily work out when the regular season came around.
And the other thing that's going to be obviously incredibly interesting is watching Lamar Jackson's status.
Now, I believe Lamar is going to play, but the Ravens apparently are going to have both
Lamar and Tyler Huntley speak to the media after Friday's practice in which Lamar is once again
participating to some degree. And he might be listed as limited once again. And so I do think there
are real questions about whether or not Lamar is going to be able to go. That's been the case
for him throughout his career with some of these lower leg injuries. And the Ravens are also,
I think, playing it quite close to the vest by having both quarterbacks speak this week,
where only the starting quarterback is required to speak to the media. And so,
I think the Ravens having both guys go out there is a little bit of an interesting recall.
Certainly is.
I've never heard of that happening, but that's what the Ravens are doing.
The Bengals players and coaches, they have been implying in what they've said this week of how big of the game this is to them.
And Joe Burroughs saying that there's nothing like the opportunity to go prove yourselves against a really good team.
They understand the importance of this game, being that they've already dropped the division game,
given what is ahead of them in the division and what's also in front of them with the opportunity.
You saw last night, the Patriots, and coach, to your point about treating every game like a playoff game, if you can really do that, the Patriots lost an interconference game to the Bears.
Well, now they're a game and a half back of the bills.
The bills are on their bi-week.
Had they won last night, they'd be just a half game back.
So every game in this league matters, especially the division games, and especially in an AFC, that is as deep and wide open as it has been probably in several years.
Oh, absolutely. You know what? And this is still, I mean, just like Jake had talked about earlier, for a game that has got this much feeling in it, this early. I mean, we're seven games going into the seventh week or actually eighth week for some. But it is still relatively early. And people need to be able to be prepared. Now, coming off a by week, I'm sure they got some work on.
the Ravens a little bit last week. They probably cleaned up a lot of things. They got themselves
back healthy for the most part. And I think that they should be on and ready to go. And I think that
this is the start. They need to look at it as, okay, the first quarter of the season's over.
We are in a second quarter or excuse me, we're in the second quarter of the season. How are we going to go to
that point and there is no half time. There is no halftime. We get no buy. So we have to start
stringing games together, victories together, and get ourselves on a role. When you start to feel
good about, hey, you're winning, you get those victory Mondays on Monday, where coach gives you
a little bit of time off and you come back in, ready to go on Wednesday, I think that's what
they have to make sure that they put into play and go.
I mean, shoot, they even had the vice president, for goodness sakes, show up to practice
the other day.
Hey, so somebody's on their side.
That's always a good thing.
Yeah, I'll bring up two things.
Lance McAllister on his Facebook page posted something about an email sent to him by a listener
talking about how commitment to renew your season tickets is coming up.
and the fact that this is such a big regular season game for Zach Taylor,
and if the Bengals were to lose on Sunday,
he'd seriously consider him not for doing his season tickets,
and if the Bengals decided to keep Zach Taylor,
if they fall short of expectations this year.
I mean, is that a little extreme?
Maybe, because even if you do lose on Sunday, you're three and three,
and you still have a chance to win the AFC North,
albeit not a great chance.
But, like, that's how important this game is to some.
I'm treating it like a playoff game.
Coach, I texted you that earlier this week.
And it's because the Bengals, aside from going back to the AFC championship in 2022,
have not sustained, they have not built what they did in 2021, built on what they did in a sustain way.
They've missed the playoffs the last three years.
And you think about all those games that they had in 2024,
that they could have won and gotten those feelings back.
That's why Bengals fans love to talk about 21 because they still don't know if this team
that feels like that 21 team, even though this is this team,
they just, they don't know if that team is going to be this good.
But here's the opportunity, much like in 21 against the Ravens in week seven,
to build that momentum, going to Baltimore, get a big time win.
And as you said, coach, starts stringing wins together.
I'll say this.
Two out of the three seasons, Joe Burroughs been healthy.
The Bengals have gotten to a championship game.
And we'll see what happens in the third out of four.
If that remains the case this year, they fell on their face.
in 2024 and they had a historically bad defense that couldn't close out games.
Offense couldn't close out games.
And so that's what remains to be seen this year.
They will be able to correct the story from 2024, where they've had some issues.
They've had the ball with an opportunity to go win in their two losses.
They could very well be 5 and 0 right now.
They weren't really in danger of losing the games that they won, in my opinion.
I don't think they were ever in any real danger against Tampa or Miami,
but they had chances to go win those games that they've lost.
And whether it was a close call here or Dalton,
are losing for the first time in the game there, Joe trying to make a play against the
Steelers. They're really close to pulling both of those off, I think. And well, we'll see how
the rest of the season goes. But if you want to get that taste out of your mouth, then be seen as a
different team in that 2020-14 that couldn't close out games. This is a big opportunity to do so.
And as far as stacking wins, I mean, it's not like it gets a whole. I mean, next week it does
get easier. But the quirk in the schedule is that after the Spain game, they come back and
play the Steelers coming off a buy in prime time, which is, I think, numerous times this season,
instead of the team coming off the international game getting the buy, the team coming off the
game is playing the team coming off a buy, which is a massive rest disparity, obviously.
It's always a rest disparity when you play a team coming off a buy, but then you're adding
the international tribal element.
And teams have not won those games in NFL history when they return from an international
game to play a team coming off a buy.
and for the Bengals, it's prime time against the Steelers at home.
So that's going to be a big one, but I'm getting ahead of myself.
We have lots to talk about with this Ravens game.
No question about that. Coach?
Well, you know what I think what he indicated in the article was that or the email that he received.
You know, the guy's kind of speaking out loud what all the other was, which the rest of the fan base,
and maybe thinking because there was so much hype coming into the year.
And then all of a sudden it's like, oh, okay, we're about the same as we've been in other years.
What's the difference?
And so I think this is very, very important for the players, for the coaches' staff especially,
that they need to write the ship and get all the oars in the water and all start rolling in one direction.
and take them. Don't worry about down the road.
Down the road will happen, but you need to take care of the task at hand,
which this week happens to be a divisional's foe and a rival.
And somebody that has been every time you haven't been to the Super Bowl,
somebody that has gotten into the playoffs and has gone away,
and they still have a dynamic football team around them,
regardless of who is calling the timeouts.
Ravens 6 and 3 against the Bengals since that 20, 21 season,
but the Bengals do have that win in the playoffs and that win in Baltimore on Thanksgiving last year.
I'll tell you how big of a game this is for me, guys.
Like, I keep thinking of Dan Marino because like Joe Borough,
he got to a Super Bowl in his second year.
He never made it back.
And he had a Hall of Fame quarterback in his own division in Jim Kelly.
Joe Burrow went to the Super Bowl in year two.
hasn't been back yet. Hopefully he will. But I just keep thinking about all the opportunities that
have been there for the Bengals, like I alluded to earlier, to build on that 2021 season and 2022.
And with that historically bad defense, Jake, as you mentioned in 24, they weren't able to do that.
Here is now another opportunity for the Bengals to show that this team is different and that this
team is capable of stringing wins together and making that run towards the playoffs.
Coming up, the Bengals chose door one by keeping Zach Taylor back in the beginning of the
the office, but they opted for a different door in another key area in March, making this a very
enticing more than just an undercard in Sunday's AFC North Showdown.

And Price Picks is now available nationwide. Who am I on this season? Well, we'll see him Sunday night.
Chiefs, Seahawks, I'm in on Chiefs running back, Kenneth Walker, the third, a ridiculous start to hit the season for the Super Bowl 60 MVP.
And former Seahawk now tearing it up with the Chiefs. Price Picks has your back too. And other apps don't.
Did you know if Price Fix invented the injury reboot?
If a player in your lineup gets injured in the first half and doesn't return,
your lineup can still cash.
The Price Fix injury protection policy helped users win over $31 million in the 2020-6 season.
So once you start paying attention to individual player stats,
you notice so much more during a game, who's getting the targets,
who's controlling the ground game, who's having a huge night,
that's what makes Price Fix fun,
because you can follow those individual performances through player projections.
Download the app today and use code locked on NFL to get $150 instantly in lineups if you win your first $5 lineup prize fix.
Run your game.
Let's go back to March in the start of free agency in the NFL and for the Bengals.
The reality is the Bengals could have if they wanted to and they didn't.
Extend an all-pro edge rusher and Trey Anderson, who by the way is regarded as the greatest free agent signing in team history.
They didn't.
letting him walk for a division rival.
But considering his disgruntal nature and the contract negotiation sagas that were previously prevalent,
the Bengals decided, yeah, we're not only going to reset our defensive line and locker room culture on that side of the ball with younger players and less disgruntle players.
We're going to go after waves of pass rush, supposed to a guy with three seasons of at least 15 sacks with the Bengals.
This game on Sunday, given that it's not only Trey Hendrickson's first game against the Bengals since.
being with them. It's also a putting the front office's validity in what they did this season
coach this offseason on the line Sunday. Well, I tell you what, there is, I'm sure he is ready
to prove that he was right and that ownership was wrong. And I think that he's going to come out.
Now, I guarantee you, he has been watching an awful lot of film because he knows where
it is stake, what's at stake from a pride standpoint. And I think that he's going to come out
and he's going to come out rolling. And I think the key thing is that they treat him so he doesn't
disrupt this whole game. Give Orlando Brown some help like they have the last few weeks with some
tight-in chips, with some whiteout chips, which I really don't know what that does for
you. But I think that they're going to give him some help because they don't want him
destroying the game because he is going to be so amped up. And I think that, you know what,
they, the Bengals had decided to let him go. The bad part about it is they got nothing for him.
And that you wish that they would have at least received something else. But I tell you what,
the front office has redeemed themselves because you had talked about it out earlier.
Alex about Trey Hendrickson being the best free agent signing.
Well, I don't know if you can call it a free agent signing, but to me it is, even though
you traded your 10.
But Dexter Lawrence is on pace.
He is on pace.
And the other ones, hey, they're playing well.
And it's better to have somebody playing well than not playing at all.
The ways of pass rush have also worked out pretty well.
Boy, Mape has been an absolute hit.
You mentioned Dexter Lawrence coach.
He's been awesome.
and we thought he'd be awesome.
He's been everything that we hoped he would be.
Jonathan Allen as a pass rusher has shown up in significant ways on significant downs.
They're getting occasional contributions from Miles, from Cedric Johnson,
from Cache's Howl still and excited to see Cache's coming off a buy
and see if he was, in fact, starting to be a little bit worn down,
something to watch for rookies.
And sometimes rookies are going to have those moments.
But Trey Hendrickson has not been as good as he was in Cincinnati so far this year.
Do I expect that to change on Sunday?
I do. I think that's how it goes. Sometimes these things are just a little bit too predictable, right?
He knows Orlando Brown very well. He's always given Orlando trouble. That's the kind of tackle that Tray can beat.
So I think you're also right that the Bengals are going to have to give help on that side because that is the side where that matchup will be happening.
The Ravens aren't moving Trey Hendrickson around a ton. He's still better on the right side of the defense, the left side of the offense.
So that's still where we're going to see that matchup. But you do have to get the front office credit for the way that they've rebuilt the defensive line.
after Trey's departure.
They've gotten deeper there.
They'd have a player directly replacing him in Boie Maefe,
who is pressuring the passer at a higher rate than Trey is so far this year.
And that's what his track record said.
Boy A Maffa in his first few years in the NFL was outperforming
Trey Hendrickson's first few years in the NFL before he arrived in Cincinnati.
So that kind of trajectory could still be available for Maffa.
And Maffa could have many more sacks.
He's been very close and hasn't finished a number of plays this year
where he could have additional sacks.
And that's kind of been the knock on him too, right?
But the rebuild that the Bengals have had in the trenches is notable.
At the same time, because of all the narratives going around this game,
you have to imagine that Trey is going to be up for this one.
And so keeping him off of Burrow as much as possible,
because we know that he can tow the line is something that the Bengals
are obviously going to be prioritizing this week.
Whether either team has admitted it directly or not,
there is some bad blood between Trey,
and the Bengals, and the players have kind of been hinting to you, they're happy he's no longer
here. They're ready to be him and beat the Ravens on Sunday.
Zach Taylor's even kind of alluded to it. You know what I want to see in this game that we've
been clamoring for at various times the last few years? If Joe Burroughs getting hit often on
Sunday and especially by Trey Hendrickson, I want to see some chippiness from the offensive line,
from Orlando Brown Jr., from Ted Karris, from Dylan Fairchild, Donald.
Rizner, Marius Mims, naming the whole offensive line.
Like, there is some bad blood, I feel like, in this rivalry, in of itself, and now you
had Trey Henderson now being on the Ravens, let's see some chippiness.
This is an AFC North game.
This is a big game for both teams, coach.
Like, maybe go out there and do something you don't normally do, which is getting, you know,
the Ravens faces a little bit, getting the opponent's face.
Well, you know what?
I think they approach every game like that.
the amount of talking that goes on,
that usually incites some chippiness.
This goes on.
But I think if they can finish and give him no,
him and all of them,
I'm not just going to put the game on Trey Anderson,
but the other defensive linemen and the linebackers,
if they can get after them and finish,
which they have to finish on pass protection
as well as in the run game,
finish their blocks all the time you give people no reason to get chippy.
You are playing within it because offensive line play is aggressive control.
And that's the way you need to approach it.
Now, hey, if you're winning, that's where bottom line comes in.
So, hey, if they start chirping, you hate to see a teammate leave and then people start saying, hey, I'm glad he's gone.
that's not good and the ownership should have known that way back because either you've got to make a
decision to keep somebody who could be lack of a better term cancerous in your locker room or but a lot
of all those guys especially in 5-0-11 they were in the building working hard every day and
Trey wasn't after he got injured for the last time.
And then, hey, no one knew when he exactly what it was that he was hurt.
They changed it from a groin to an oblique, I mean, they were bouncing all over the place on what it was.
And I'm sure if you're going in and you're punching in every day and you have that that you have to be around and you're trying to
to make things as positive as possible. Yeah, you're going to have some, there's going to be some
feelings. And I think that this is big and Orlando's going to be ready to roll, which is awesome.
And don't be surprised if a couple of times, Trey Hendrickon tries to spin inside. And if they're
sliding the protection to him, all of a sudden, Dylan Furchout doesn't go over there and blow him up
a couple of times. Hey, why not? You know, he's there. This is a physical game. This is a physical game. I can only
imagine the conversations we would have had on this show had we started it when
Trey Hendrickson was holding out or holding in, whatever that was, because we didn't start
this show until week 11 last year when Trey Hendrickson was already basically gone for the season.
Can you imagine, coach, the things she would have said in the offseason when Trey
Hendrickson was holding court with reporters on the practice field instead of being out there
while his teammates were trying to get ready for the season. It was not a great situation.
that distraction is off the books.
It will get settled on the field on Sunday.
Coach, let me ask you this,
because this kind of relates to Trey Hendrickson,
facing the Bengals for the first time since walking in free agency.
When the Buccaneers,
when you and the Buccaneers were in Super Bowl 37,
back in January of 03,
John Gruden was the Raiders head coach the previous year.
Well, guess are you guys facing the Super Bowl?
They're Raiders.
What about John Gruden said it?
Could you sense he was a little motivated to face his former team?
Oh, there's no doubt.
There is no question.
He had practiced against that team all camp for, what, two, three years.
And he knew them very, very well to the point where they didn't even change their signals.
So we were in San Diego prepping for the game on Thursday.
Okay.
And we were going scout team.
And John took over as the quarterback.
and basically audibled all the way, not all the way down the field, because the defense was that good,
but he was kind of giving them and mimic Gannon the whole way down.
So you knew he was, he was prime.
And some of the things that was coming out of his mouth early in the game, it was like, dude, hey, you know, I know this is the biggest game of the year.
But you know what?
You've got to keep yourself in check.
and you knew he was ready to go.
And that takes nothing to be able to do that,
especially if he just came from someplace that did not give you what you thought you were worth.
Well, that's, I can only imagine things that were said on that headset during Super Bowl 37.
Jay, Coach and I talked about this on Tuesday show,
but as much we talk about the Bengals and ability to close out games,
the Ravens have had their own issues for a.
really long time. Derek Henry has four fumbles this year. He's had several fumbles in the fourth quarter
the last few years. How much do you put into that being a factor in this game on Sunday?
Ball security is going to be paramount in these games. It always is. You lose a turnover battle. You're
probably losing football games. I think that if Lamar returns for the Ravens, it's just a much
different offense than they've had the last couple of weeks. And they managed to win one of those games with Tyler Huntley.
And so that's really what it comes down to when the Ravens are on offense. I'm more interested in what
the Bengals were able to do outside of Trey with the defensive matchup against Jesse Minter.
It comes from that Mike McDonald's school of defense.
Mike McDonald, of course, gave the Bengals issues more than any other defense that Baltimore
has employed, has stymied Joe Burrow, at least consistently.
I know the Bengals had a very poor second outing against the Ravens last year, but that
Thursday night came a very different story.
And so looking at this week, Colin Hamilton, obviously, is the headliner for this Ravens
defense. If Trey Hendrickson wasn't on the seamanus Max Crosby, we were talking about
Max Crosby, we were talking about Kyle Hamilton. But because it's Trey and he's got the former
Bengals ties, we're not talking about the rest of this defense quite as much. The Nate Wiggins matchup,
he's talked some smack about these Bengals receivers in the past. That's going to be a fun one.
Jamar's always gotten the better of Marlon Humphrey outside of one play last, or what was that,
2024. Yeah.
A crucial interception in that game. That's a matchup that you like. If you're the Bengals,
you're Joe Burrow. Not a about a BK back on the field for the Ravens.
going to be interesting to see him for the first time this year in his return.
But the interesting one for injuries on that defense, Jalen Hawkins, who's been playing
safety for them, most downs this year, is they're playing three safeties a lot in Baltimore.
Might have had a knee injury on Wednesday.
He went from limited to a did not practice on Thursday, didn't practice on Friday.
So that could lead to some changes in the way the Ravens are playing defense.
Not that if you're the Bengals, you can ever expect to get what you see on tape.
I think the Bengals probably lead NFL offenses and getting unscounded looks from opposing defenses.
Teams seem to do things differently when they're playing against the Bengals.
But losing that safety could shift the Ravens out of playing three safeties
and force him to play Kyle Hamilton more in that safety role instead of the slot and box role that he's been in.
So it'll be really interesting to see how they use Kyle Hamilton this week where he's been excellent in the slot,
obviously and in the box.
He's one of their best players, probably the best player on their defense, right?
Sure. And if his role changes this week, how does that change the game plan for the Ravens defense?
A question that we will see answered on Sunday.
Shailon Hawkins, again, as you alluded to, did not participate in practice yesterday.
Neither did linebacker Tavis Robinson with a peck injury, Hawkins with an injury, as we mentioned.
Jameson Hensley, the terrific Ravens speedwriter for ESPN tweeted,
Jake, you alluded to this 39 minutes ago.
If you just joined us, Lamar Jackson participated in warm-ups,
but didn't do much movement jogging or running during the media availability that they had at their
practice today, injury report coming out later today.
He's going to be questionable.
There's no doubt about it.
He's going to be questionable.
They're having both the quarterbacks talk.
They're going to play games with it until they can't play games with it anymore.
I've never seen both quarterbacks talk on a Friday media availability just from my advantage point.
Coming up, yes, Lamar Jackson, Derek Henry headlined the Ravens offense, but there's
another player that I'm actually most worried about going into Sunday.
Plus, this is not the Ravens defense of oldest we've been talking about.
One thing that Bengals can get against them that they've struggled to do,
so far this season.

When I think of the Ravens offense, yes, Lamar Jackson, Derek Henry, sure, future Hall of Famers.
Zay Flower scares me the most because what he can do as an explosive wide receiver,
he's one of the most underrated wide receivers in the game.
And his ability to take the top off the defense
and being able to burn defenses of those deep crossers.
He scares me the most going into Sunday.
He is definitely one of the best in the league.
And they utilize him very, very well.
Not only if it was Todd Munkin's offense,
but the current offense that they're in,
they know when they have somebody
and he is their number one target
coming out and passing situations.
So you better bottle them up.
And I think that it's going to be really because to me, I don't think that the secondary has, I think, what we thought they were going to be at this point in time.
We thought that they were going to be much, much better than what they are.
And maybe it's just a lot of the covers that they're playing.
I had thought that they were going to have a few more picks, especially from the pressure that that pass rush is putting on.
you know, boy, Mafe is getting some great pressures.
Well, that ought to convert into the contested throws down the field because the quarterback's off rhythm.
And I think that that needs to have happen.
So I think that from a coverage standpoint, I think that we've got to play him a little bit tighter,
pass him off, play a little bit more combination coverages.
And I think that if you can utilize him and force them,
to be basically one-dimensional, then even though you're one-dimensional, be careful what you're
wishing for, has the ability, whether it's Lamar running and he will choose when he wants to run.
He won't be like his normal self.
But with Derek Henry, hey, you can't go wrong with that big guy.
We have seen Lamar be pretty significantly impacted when trying to return from injury in the past
in terms of his ability to stand in when he's pressured to move around the pocket as well.
he does take a hit if he is actually limited.
And I think it's a question still as to how limited he may or may not be
after the ankle injury that he suffered.
But as far as Zay Flowers goes, he is a scary player.
Don't get me wrong.
The Bengals had a lot of success against Zay Flowers last year,
especially in their win.
He caught only two of his seven targets in week 13 last year.
He had a fumble in that game.
He had just six yards receiving.
That was a lot due to DJ Turner.
DJ Turner was shadowing Zay Flowers in that game.
and it'll be interesting to see if that is the approach from the Bengals again in this one.
In the second game, a little bit more success for Zayflowers,
caught three of his five targets for 68 yards,
so a little bit more of an explosive game, had a touchdown in that one.
But the Bengals have had some success against Dayflowers in the past.
That's probably his worst game of the season last year.
Catching only two of your seven targets is by far the lowest catch percentage on his targets
that he had last year.
The next lowest, I think, was 60% that happened in a couple of other games,
once against the Chargers or Rams.
I guess it was the Rams that he caught six out of the 10
targets in that game.
And his second game against the Bengals got three out of five.
So there are a couple of games where he's held to 60%
in terms of catching his target.
So the Bengals did a decent job against Flowers last year.
They'll need to do that again this year.
But I'm more concerned about Alex.
You mentioned Zay Flowers being the scariest thing to you.
We'll see if Lamar is in fact the scariest player on the field
for the Ravens offense is going to depend on how he's moving.
And if it's not either of those guys,
it's got to be Derek Henry and the Bengals' inability to defend perimeter runs.
The chunk plays they've given up on crack toss this year pretty consistently.
And so the Bengals will need to defend that particular play better and will, I'm sure,
be getting attacked on the perimeter.
Declan Doyle has shown some pretty intense creativity in the last couple of weeks without Lamar out there.
And so they're going to get hit by something they haven't seen before.
And the hope is that they're ready to contain it, ready to play assignments on football,
and do a good job when they do face those.
scotted looks in those perimeter runs that I'm sure the Ravens will try to get to this week.
No question about that. And coach, I want to ask you, how should the Bengals be better at defending
the perimeter run that Jake you alluded to, especially if Lamar Jackson plays in this game.
And if he does get to the edge, how do the Bengals get better at defending the run game on the
perimeter against the Ravens offense that is so creative and so quick, so fast?
Well, you know what? Their plus is that Derek Henry, although he will run it out,
side and on the perimeter. He's more of an inside the box guy. The negative part of it is front
and coverage have to mask. And I think it starts with those who are setting the edge.
Take yourself out of just being all pass rush oriented, but also knowing formationally how
they like to get the ball on the perimeter. Secondarily, I think that you need to
get your strong safety and your nickel, the guy in the slide, need to come up and be able to
force that thing hard.
And I think that that is the situation that we're in right now, is that we don't get as much
secondary force as what is prescribed on the coverages that they work.
If they're playing cover two, it needs to be the corners.
If they're playing quarters, it's got to be the inside linebackers.
If they're, you know, playing cover three, it's got to be the.
safeties of the nickel.
You know, so based on what the coverages are, and I'm sure they're going through every week,
whether the other team has shown it or not, they're running those particular bunch crunches
where they're tossing a ball outside or two-man crunches where the tackles are now pulling.
So I'm sure they're working at every different angle that they're trying to do
and trying to get that hard force out of the secondary and out of the linebackers to where
they can get out and go.
The one thing that you can't do, which has happened thus far inside, the linebackers are
really good when balls run in the box.
Well, shoot, you got all those big bodies taking up space.
When the ball's on the perimeter, now you're not only checking your gaps, but are you a step
slow?
Because now you're going to get cracked or you've got to pull it.
that's going to get out in front, and if you're a step slower, they're going to beat it at that
point. So I think that they're constantly evolving as they go, and eventually they will end up
putting a lid on those perimeter runs. Interestingly, about half of Derek Henry's carries this
year have been either to the tackle or to the end. So he's running quite a bit outside this year,
and about half of his first downs have been either runs to the tackles or to the ends of the
line of scrimmage. So either hitting the, what would that be, ABC gap or outside of that,
further outside trying to get around the tight end. So it is interesting just that they're running
him outside so much this year. And he's had some success there, four of his seven touchdowns,
14 of his 29 first downs and about half of his carriers. Well, you've got to remember both at Alabama
and at when he was in Tennessee, their featured runs.
with him were outside zone, which could end up being deemed wider if the tight ends are in
good shape or the tackles are in good shape or cutting that thing up to where all of a sudden
now that big body gets a head of steam going, oh, you know, there's not a lot of guys.
That's a business decision at that point done.
The silver lining here is the Bengals have had some really good performances containing Derek
Henry throughout his career with Tennessee and with the Ravens. I can count on probably one hand the
number of times Derek Henry's had success, really good success by his standards running the football
against the Bengals. Going back to say Flowers, he's had a very, very good start to the season.
32 catches, 471 yards, two touchdowns, 14.7 yards per reception. Another guy that you obviously have to
worry about, Mark Andrews. I mean, he's torched the Bengals defense in years past. We know the
Bengals defensive struggles covering tight ends.
23 catches, 181 yards, and a touchdown.
Now, the Ravens defense, this is not the Ravens defense of 2000, coach, I'm sure you
remember that.
This isn't the Ravens defense of that.
This is a flawed Ravens defense.
I know Kyle Hamilton's great.
Roquant Smith is still really good.
You got some dudes up front led by Namdi Manabike.
And I feel like the one thing the Bengals haven't done a lot of this year is yak
opponents, yards after catch.
You can do that against this Ravens defense.
I was watching tape on them last night.
And I noticed the Colts, the Saints, even the Titans were utilizing the middle of the field and gaining yards after the catch.
And Jake, you remember this back in 21, Week 7 in Baltimore.
CJ Uzama had a big catch and run for a touchdown, two of them actually, in that game.
Jamar Chase had a really big slant route that led to a lot of yards after catch right before halftime.
So if the Bengals can get the middle of the field working with Kisicki, Mike Kisiki in this game,
even Jamar and T on those deep crossers.
Get Dante Myers involved with his speed.
You can yak against this Ravens defense.
That's a big key for me in this game.
I think another thing is that the Ravens have been really bad,
and we talked about this on Locked on Bengals yesterday against a quick vertical game.
So get the ball out quick on those vertical routes,
hit those back shoulders.
If you're Joe Burrow, that's a way to take advantage of the Ravens outside
where Marlon Humphrey hasn't been as good this year.
I think you've liked the matchup with T. Higgins and Nate Wiggins when you get it.
And so it's not just middle of the field.
So I think I agree, Alex.
I would love to see this team be a better yak team in this game
and take advantage of the Ravens who have tackling issues of their own looking at it.
I mean, they've played one more game than the Bengals.
The Bengals have 47 miss tackles according to PFF charting.
The Ravens in one more game have 51 of their own.
So it's not like tackling has been something that has been excellent for the Ravens,
although it's a little bit more spread out.
Roquan Smith has five miss tackles this year of his own.
He's generally a pretty good tackler, though.
So I do think that'll be an interesting factor if they can get Jamar either winning downfield,
as he discussed in his press conference, or just using Jamar to generate those yards after catch
because he has been that guy.
You mentioned Dante Myers.
I think that's a good shout as well.
But with the vulnerability the Ravens have had on those quick, deeper throws, which are
mostly going to be your back shoulder types or your verticals on the outside, maybe some seams
against certain coverages, maybe Mike Keseki gets one of those.
Colby Young being back this week could be a factor as well as it was something that
Zach Taylor sounded like was going to have a bigger plan for Colby Young before he got hurt
on the first play of that game a couple of weeks ago.
So that's something to watch for this weekend as well.
Coach, is it weird to you when Jake is going through the Ravens Miss Tackles to hear those?
Because like normally you think of the Ravens and they are so good at tackling.
I mean, when you were coaching the Ed Ray Lewis, Terrell Suggs, Chris McAllister, Ed Reed,
this is not the Ravens defense I grew up with.
no well certainly they're not and uh you know what those those were all Aussie
newsome drafts that you had mentioned uh and Aussie was incredible at oh gosh yes how he wanted
to build that defense they were a very aggressive defense or not nearly as aggressive as they
uh as they once were but um you know what they the lack of tackling and in
You know what, those are just numbers that come up.
And we talk about it all the time, the perimeter tackling, the one-on-ones in the open field.
Those are very, very important because, you know what, there's really not a lot of guys behind you.
So for them to be as high as they are is really so, but it's not under new management, but it's under new coaching staff.
Those are things that you can take advantage of and you can take for granted a lot of times,
but you've got to work out.
Those are part of your everyday drills that have to be worked on and imposed so you don't end up losing that edge that you once had.
And I think that for not only the Bengals, but also for the Ravens and anybody else in the league.
If you're not working those things every day, at least a couple of times.
times a week, you know what? You're relying on ability, athletic ability alone, and that sometimes
will fail yet. You know what mistackles do? They keep drives alive. That leads into one of our keys to the
game coming up next right here on the Bangal Squad Show. Bangal Squad Show today is brought to you by

All right, coach, you alluded to this on Tuesday.
Sustaining drives.
So your son is an assistant coach on the New Orleans Saints.
They beat the Ravens in week two.
Here are their fourth quarter scoring drives.
They scored two touchdowns in the fourth quarter,
one of which they added a two-point conversion on that tied the game.
Their next one won the game.
The Saints two drives in that fourth quarter coach covered 518 and 638 time of possession.
So that means they held the ball for 1156 of the fourth quarter.
And you know what they did?
they wear down the Ravens defense, or they wore down the Ravens
defense, excuse me. And they also force missed tackles, including one on a
key third down late in the game. If you sustain drives coach,
controlled the clock, when time of possession, you're going to put the
Ravens in unfavorable positions for them. And that's advantage for your
defense. Well, you know, anytime you can
sustain your drives and continue to move the ball and move the
chains. You don't have to get big chunk yards. You just want to give them slow death as opposed
to fast deaths. If you're in a scoring match, hey, get as many points as you can as fast as you can.
But what that does is it also helps your defense stand on the sidelines and get a break
so they're not out there the whole time. And I think that if they're capable of doing that
and they are more than capable of doing that, I've seen, you know, just in the last few games,
the the Bengals have had sustained long drives.
But I think it comes down to the not turning the ball over and not creating those self-inflicted pre-snap penalties that has harmed the Bengals up until last week throughout the season.
And I think if they're capable of doing that, play discipline football, and do they should be, they can.
have those long, those long drives. And I think that, uh, that the score will be evident at the end of the day.
Both drives covered 68 yards in that game for the Saints. Their final scoring drive in that game,
16 plays. That's the standing of drive right there. Absolutely. Hey, and that's what you want.
You know what? I mean, slow death. Boy, that, that keeps that defense on the field.
and they only have a certain number of bodies.
And now if you've got a banged-up group, like is on defense and they're struggling a little bit,
you keep them on the field, hey, you're in great shape.
And then all of a sudden, boom, you hit one big, you get a big play, and you're going.
And you also beat the Ravens at their own game.
Jake, you alluded to earlier, ball security, winning the turnover battle.
You've got to protect the football, especially in the red zone.
Yeah, you always do.
That's every football game, right?
I'm looking at this game and I'm thinking about just running the ball at Trey Hendrickson when he's on the field.
You know how other teams have the Dexter's off the field?
We have a play sheet for when Dexter Lawrence leaves a game.
The Bengals should have a play sheet when Trey Hendrix is on the field on neutral downs.
And it should involve running right at him.
We were looking at this yesterday on lockdown Bengals, either before or during the episode, I can't remember.
And the Ravens are weakest at defending runs at the left end or sorry, the right end, the left tackle spot.
And when Trey is on the field, that gets even worse.
So given up five and a half yards per carry overall for runs at left tackle.
They're giving up over eight yards per carry for runs at left tackle when Trey Hendrickson is in the game.
We know after watching Trey Hendrickson for years in Cincinnati that he can be beat in the run game from time to time.
And maybe he makes plays in this game in the run game.
It makes me eat these words.
But if I'm the Bengals, I'm thinking about a play sheet for Trey Hendrickson.
Then in the game on mixed downs where I can run the ball at him, see if I can take advantage of him.
And now you've got to block those other guys too.
but that has been a spot that when I was looking at some of the numbers for this game
and looking at the tray narrative specifically,
I thought there was an opportunity there for some potential running success for a team
that is still looking for that rushing success.
And the Ravens have generally been a solid plus run defense this year.
But maybe they can get something if they run it right at tray when he's in the game.
On the other side, and coach you talked about it on Tuesday.
If you're the secondary, we've seen them come so close to intercepting passes,
not just Jordan Battle.
T.J. Turner's had some.
to Carrio Davis had some DJ Ivy's had some haul those in haul those passes in turn the Ravens
over this is the game to start doing that oh absolutely I tell you what there's nothing like getting a
pick you're going to probably get it you're either going to stop them from scoring or you're going
to get the ball in favorable field position uh for your offense and I think that it's it's time
that we start to on as as good as the Bengals.
defense can be and has shown, they need to start getting some turnovers, whether it's fumbles,
whether it's picks, whether whatever the case may be. And I know they've had a few. But you know what,
when you got these quality of safeties that have that kind of range and you got two corners
that are touted as being, you know, up for extensions, you know what? It's about time that they do.
And I know that once upon a time I said that, hey, it was defense on paper, you would think I thought that they would have like six picks for touchdowns.
We don't have that quite yet.
We got one, and that was by the linebacker.
But, yeah, we need to start to see those.
Well, I mean, you coached for a team that their defense return three touchdowns in the Super Bowl.
So maybe that's why you made that bull prediction there.
Hey, well, you know what?
That was when John challenged them at the beginning of the year.
I need 10 picks or 10 turnovers for touchdowns.
And the 10th came in the Super Bowl.
Wow.
Well, there you.
There you go.
All right.
Stopping the run.
We talked about that.
Hitting explosive plays.
We talked about that.
So four keys to the games.
The standing drive, stop in the run, waiting the turnover battle,
hitting explosive plays.
Jake, I know you don't make predictions for these games.
Coach, I don't know if you're going to make a prediction or you're just going to say the Bengals win this game.
if that, that, that.
I will say this.
The Bengals win this game if they secure the football,
which is every game,
and they don't hurt themselves by pre-snap penalties.
They win it.
I love that, Jake.
But this officiating crew pre-snap penalties is a good shout.
This crew has called some pre-snap penalties
a little bit more than some others in the NFL,
and the Ravens have had some issues with that this year.
The Bengals obviously have as well,
and they'll be on the road,
they'll be on the silent count,
week. Those procedural penalties have been brutal. Both of these offenses have
quarterbacks that can overcome them, but you'd rather not. Taking care of the football
playing mistake-free, obviously big every week. And then if they can do the other things we're
talking about, wind downfield with Jamar Chase and T. Higgins, who hasn't played in Baltimore
since I think 2021 for the Bengals in a road game in Baltimore. He's had injuries in those years.
And so an opportunity there for the Bengals to have both of their horses at receiver
in this game to try to win downfield. And then, yeah, containing Zayflower.
Lamar Jackson and Derek Henry when that Ravens offense is on the field.
It's pretty cut and dry when you talk about it.
It's much harder to do on the field.
Yeah, not only has T. Higgins not really played in Baltimore since 2021.
The Bengals haven't played in daylight in Baltimore since 2021.
The spotlight will be on Zach Taylor and the Bengals.
They look for a crucial early season.
I shouldn't say early season.
Midseason, Division Road win.
I think they do it.
3124.
