We assume that'd be for a tag-and-trade, but it's encouraging to hear that they're at least considering t...he option. Jake Liscow and James Rapien break down why that's good news and would make sense for the Bengals to try to recoup an asset for Hendrickson instead of just letting him walk.Plus, we take a look at the Seahawks-Patriots Super Bowl matchup for team-building lessons as they've taken different paths to the big game and the Bengals need to take big swings and build a better roster.Everydayer ClubIf you never miss an episode, it’s time to make it official. It's a near certainty that Trey Hendrickson will be playing his football elsewhere in 2026,
but a new report on Sunday indicates the Bengals are considering the franchise tag.
You are locked on Bengals, your daily Cincinnati Bengals podcast.
Part of the Locked on Podcast Network, your team every day.
What up Bengals fans and welcome to another episode of the Lockdown Bengals podcast.
Part of the Lockdown Podcast Network, your team every day, the number one sports podcast network in the land.
And he's James Repeat Object.
Let's go.
And we are locked on Bengals covering your favorite team here on this podcast since 2016.
Your best one-stop shop for all things Bengals on the internet.
Because James and I have you covered.
And we have for just about a decade here with all the news and analysis on your Cincinnati Bengals.
You could ever want or need.
Today we touch on the report that Trey Hendrickson and the franchise tag might be making acquaintances with one another in Cincinnati.
as a report from Mike Garofalo indicates that the Bengals are considering using the tag,
and then we dive into what the Bengals can learn from Super Bowl 60,
the Patriots and the Seahawks playing.
After we record this episode, we're recording before that game has occurred,
but regardless of the outcome, which we might talk about tomorrow,
there are always lessons for teams not in the Super Bowl to take away from the teams
that make those late playoff pushes.
We'll get there a little bit later in the show.
Today's episode brought to you by Fandle.
The winter games are on and there's no better way to follow them than with a bet on Fandle.
Fandle play your game.
And James, this caught me by surprise this morning as we were sitting down to record our first episode of the week,
a report from, I think the Insiders was it, the NFL network team that Mike Rofalo specifically,
that the Bengals are considering using the tag on Trey Hendrickson,
something that I've been firmly in the camp of, I'll believe it when I see it.
And assuming it would be part of a tag and trade, I'm still in that camp.
But this is the first report we have that indicates the Bengals are considering the option.
Yeah, it is, and this is great news.
Like, this is great news that it's at least being considered.
And guess who doesn't want to get tagged?
Try Hendrickson, Trey Hendrickson's camp.
And so to hear this, you, ideally, it's coming from the Bengals.
and that is something that they're seriously considering.
And it's something, quite frankly, Jake, they should do.
If you want to maximize your assets, get as much as you can,
even if you know there's no way on God's Great Earth that Trey Hendrickson's going to play for you this year.
And I think they know that.
I think their mind is very much made up when it comes to Trey Hendricksson.
And even though the fan base doesn't necessarily feel that way,
and they see us talking about edge rushers.
And it's like, well, what about Trey?
I don't think that's the internal debate or discussion.
Mike Garifolo is saying what he said is probably peeling back the curtain a little bit
with what the Bengals are looking at here and considering.
Should we tag him?
Is it worth it?
The pros, the cons, the risk, the non-risk.
And for me, it just isn't that risky.
It really isn't.
There's really no motivation that Trey would have to sign that tag.
He wants to go to free agency.
And if, let's say they tag him, because I think a lot of people would say, well, if you tag him and you get stuck with him,
if they tag him and he doesn't sign the tag right away and i can explain why he won't
then they can rescind it at any time but and this is the big but that makes sense the tag
window is open from february 18th to march 4th jake that's a long window you know what's included
in there the NFL combine the NFL combine is included in there and so you can go there
you can talk with the Cowboys who on Saturday, Jeremy Fowler said that the Cowboys were interested in the Colts were interested in.
There's all these teams that could be interested in Trey Hendrickson if he hits free agency.
The Combine's the perfect time to work out a deal.
That's what I would be doing if I'm the Bengals.
That's what they should do.
And if it doesn't work, if you get to the Combine and there's not a lot of interest and all of these things happen and it doesn't work,
you can just rescind the tag before free agency opens or when you secure that Odafeo a four-year
year deal or whatever deal, whatever contract that you want to get done.
That's what I would look at it as is a chance to add an asset in exchange for a guy
that you know is not going to be on your team anyway.
Something I want to look up now is when the last time a team rescinded the franchise tag
was out of curiosity.
But you mentioned the Jeremy Fowler report.
That's the other report we had on Trey Hendrickson.
We have the rum report from Mike O'Rofalo that says the Bengals are considering the tag.
and Fowler's report where he listed the Cowboys and Colts, like you mentioned,
and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers is some of the teams that may be interested in Trey Hendrickson,
and he said that it was inclusive of those teams, those aren't the only teams,
said that the franchise tag would be a mild surprise to him.
The relationship has run its course, he wrote,
and the tag will be above $30 million.
Perhaps it could swing a tag in trade,
but losing him in free agency could equate to a third-round compensatory pick if Cincinnati plays it right.
So that's the part that I wanted to get to is you might see.
Maybe you saw this report for Jeremy Fowler.
And you haven't heard us talk about the Trey Hendrickson free agency slash franchise tag decision that the Bengals have to make.
I think we covered it in the episode last week.
I think it was early in the week.
If the Bengals let Trey Hendrickson just get to free agency, hoping to recoup a third round compensatory pick,
which they would qualify for, Trey should make enough money, that that,
would line them up for a third round cop pick.
A couple of things here, right?
First, that doesn't happen until the 2027 NFL draft.
They would get it after this year.
Second, there's no guarantee that the Bengals actually get that pick
because we expect the Bengals to be active in free agency.
They don't have a bunch of their own guys to extend or sign this year.
They have a couple.
We would like to see them get Dalton Riser done.
We would like to see them extend at least one,
out both of their corners and maybe they explore extensions for a few other players.
Orlando Brown could be one that isn't necessarily the most likely, but it's something they
could explore, right? So there are some of the other guys that could explore extensions for,
but it's nothing like last year's huge money contracts that they're trying to work out for
their wide receivers while trying to figure out Trey's future at the same time.
Those distractions or priorities, whatever you want to call them, shouldn't exist this year.
there are pressing clear needs on the defensive side of the ball.
We expect them to address.
We expect them to address a safety and at least one lineman.
And I think they desperately right now need to go find a guy that they can trust to play in the slot on defense as well.
So bare minimum, those positions, ideally also a linebacker.
But that cop pick only conveys to the Bengals if they don't.
sign more free agents than they lose.
And there is far from a guarantee that they will have enough guys sign contracts elsewhere
to keep them in line for a third round compensatory pick.
Yeah, that's it.
Like, if they are in line to get anything for Trey, and this is my words that you don't have to
agree, Jake, complete failure in free agency.
Like, complete failure, because they should be signing quality.
Like I mentioned Odafe O'A.
I get it.
He might decide to deal bigger than Trey if they both hit free agency because of his age,
because of his draft pedigree, all of those things.
But that's where we should be talking.
Last year, I regret not being more vocal.
And we talked about him.
Like, there's no doubt we talked about him.
And he's playing on Sunday night.
Mount Williams.
They should have signed him.
They should have been in on him right away.
And maybe they couldn't have made it work or didn't want to swim in those waters or whatever.
But they should have been in on him.
And so that's it.
That's the, when you have four pro bowlers and none of them,
none of them are on defense and you know Trey Hendrickson's leaving,
you're going to have to swim with the big fish and try to land a big fish.
That is just it.
It doesn't matter.
If you're trying to contend for a Super Bowl, that's the standard.
And so it doesn't mean they don't need multiple medium-sized fish.
Of course they do.
And maybe they get a bunch of medium-sized fish.
And that's what works.
It worked in the 2021 off-season.
Medium-sized it up, maybe.
But if you get a bunch of medium-sized,
then that big fish,
Trey Hendricks and leaving,
you're not going to get any compensatory picks.
And that's fine.
I'm fine with that because you can control his destiny.
You can make sure he doesn't sign with the Ravens
and try to get after Joe Burrow.
And you can send his behind to the NFC
if you choose to.
All you have to do is tag him and work out a deal.
And it works out for Trey too
because you can let Trey negotiate with whatever team you agree to send him to.
So I think it could work out for all sides.
And that's,
why if you're the Bengals, you tag him so you can kind of control things a bit.
Having a little bit of control would be a pretty nice perk to say the least.
And keeping him out of the division, who knows where he could end up.
We'll see how it plays out.
It's nice to hear that they are at least considering the options available to them.
And like you said, they can use the combine as a period of time to explore that tag and trade.
A lot of those conversations happen.
And then they don't even have to issue the franchise tag until the very end of that window,
which is at the end of or right after the combat includes, the combine is really long.
It's like more than a week long.
It's deceptively long.
I'm there for a few days.
Yeah.
So in my head, it's a few, but you're right.
People are like, you still at the combine.
I'm like, no, I left four days ago.
Yeah.
What are you guys talking about?
Well, because the players get there.
The players are there for like three days before or two days before they start any on-field testing.
and they have the wave of positions.
So it goes over at least a week.
Yeah, we'll see how it works out with Trey Hendrickson, right?
The only the last thing I'll throw out on this topic is like the only way that it's not a failure and the Bengals get a cop pick for Trey is if something I think pretty unexpected happens and they have like seven guys on their roster go sign qualifying deals elsewhere.
And they sign six guys or something like that.
But like I said, the likelihood of that very low.
A couple teams playing in the Super Bowl today, James.
Later as we're recording this episode, perhaps before you've listened to this episode.
But there are always lessons that teams can learn from the teams in the Super Bowl.
Let's dive into that conversation coming up next.
Today's show is brought to you by Fandul.

and there's no better way to follow them than with Fandul.
Fandle play your game.
All right, James, the Super Bowl later today as we're recording this.
And every year, I like to think about honestly in each round of the playoffs,
like what can the Bengals learn from these teams?
What are the ways these teams got there?
Because there's always so many different paths you can take.
And one of the lessons is there's many different ways to win in the NFL.
Let's dive into that conversation.
Just a quick reminder that for the everydayers out there, welcome back.

All right, James,
do you think about the Patriots and the Seahawks in this game?
I've drawn some parallels between this year's Patriots and the Bengals in 2021 and the
2022, early 2022 in L.A., playing against the Rams.
What stands out to you is these are things that the Bengals can take away from these teams
who took very different paths, right, to get there, or even the final four teams,
but specifically these two in the Super Bowl, like, what are your big thoughts?
as you consider how these teams got to this point this year.
Well, if you think about it, the thing that stands out,
the Bengals need defensive trench help.
And what did the Patriots do?
Will they go get Melton Williams?
They throw him in the middle with a guy who probably should be a Bengal.
And it really wasn't hindsight at the time,
even though they were locked in on offensive line in that 2021 draft.
They trade down the Bengals do.
And think about that.
if you're watching this or listening to this before Super Bowl 60,
the Bengals could have drafted Christian Barmore and paired him with DJ Reader.
And they traded down with the Patriots.
So Bill Belichick and the Patriots, one of his last nice moves in the draft,
Bill Belichick gets Christian Barmore.
The Bengals weren't taking Barmore.
They were going to take Jackson Carman.
They knew it was a reach deep down.
So they trade down.
No one between 38 and 46 consider Jackson Carman, except the Bengals.
You know what's crazy about that?
It's unbelievable.
When we learned about that, because we learned that that was a plan that hours ahead.
It was a wild.
It was a really poorly kept secret.
Yeah.
I didn't even consider like, I mean, when they got to the pick and I saw who got picked in their original pick, I was like, yeah, why did they just stick and pick more?
Like, we liked Farmore that year.
But like, there was hardly a thought for the other options they had available to them because it was like, well, we know what they're doing.
Like, this is what their plan is.
there was hardly a thought for their other options there because of what they're playing man
that was just such it's just another exact their process sometimes but it's just sucks no it
just sucks and it sucks because they felt like they needed an offensive lineman in the first
two rounds like that's that's that's and they never made that mistake in another position
huh and they knew they needed defensive tackle help right
And so then they reach on Tyler Shelf, they get an extra picks, get shot.
Like, that's it.
The one mistake turns into multiple mistakes when you could have just addressed a need.
And then suddenly you have Reader and Barmore, like, that's a hell of a one, too.
Like I wonder how that turns out, especially when you had Ogon Joby, you had Hill.
Or were you about to trade for Hill?
You're about to trade for Hill.
So maybe that doesn't happen.
Yeah.
Yeah, maybe that happens.
You don't trade for Hill.
Fine.
I want to see that still.
So that just wanted to point out that part of history.
But the Patriots could have said, oh, well, we have Barmore.
We don't need to go this route.
And they were like, no, let's go get, let's go big fish hunting.
And he's made a huge impact specifically in the playoffs, Mitt Williams has.
And that's it is whether it's the big fish or some medium to low to medium guys like a K.
Levant Chase on who may have a huge impact in Super Bowl 6th.
the type of guys that you can target that end up making plays for you in these big games.
Really nice draft pedigree.
Obviously, it didn't work out initially for him in the league.
You sign him to a lower-end deal and guess what?
Productive.
Chase Young, it didn't work out for him early on.
He goes to the Saints.
It's kind of weird.
He just had his best year.
Miles Murphy, you hope that that's the trajectory he continues to have.
My point is sometimes it's okay to roll the Dyson Free Agency a little bit with these lower-end deals.
because it may work out well for you.
And that guy may end up being productive enough to help you win in key spots.
So they spent money.
They built around their quarterback.
I get it.
He's on a rookie deal.
But they spent a ton of money to address the trenches.
And that's what the Bengals.
I'm trench man for a reason, Jake.
The Bengals need to do that this offseason.
And so whether you trade, tray, or not, there shouldn't be a defensive lineman that isn't on their board.
Whether or not they like him, whether or not they think he's,
He's a fit, all of those things.
Like, there shouldn't be a guy that they're like, oh, well, we can't get that guy
because you can and you should if you think he's worth whatever he's worth.
They added significantly on the defensive side of the ball, the New England Patriots.
They followed that initial Bengals blueprint, right?
They've got the quarterback on the rookie deal.
They got a bunch of mid-range free agents to go along with that in addition to a top-end
free agent. And that's the
big one, Milton Williams.
Like when those kinds of players come along,
the Bengals
are almost
never in the conversation.
Trey Hendrickson wasn't
at that level that Milton Williams
was in terms of the interest around
the NFL.
DJ Reader not at that level. Both really
good players that, in
DJ Reader's case in particular, we were really
excited to see them sign, but not
at that level. But the Patriots went
far beyond just those couple of guys, right?
Like, they also added Harold Landry.
They added Carlton Davis, a couple of key pieces, Robert Spillane, some veteran consistency
in the linebacker room.
You mentioned K. Levin Chase on.
I think Christian Ellis, I don't know if that was more recent, a waiver claim from Philadelphia.
That was a few years ago now.
So that one doesn't count for this.
year but they did actively go pursue guys in free agency they weren't afraid to go
get a significant coaching upgrade when their coach didn't work out they made a
coaching change they brought in a guy that was established and available they've
developed players they've drafted relatively well I would say at least last
year getting a lot of impact from rookie
from the 2025 draft class, they've kind of followed the blueprint for a first contract
quarterback, for a rookie contract quarterback, right?
And I think the Bengals also did a lot of these things.
The Patriots just kind of went that extra step with Milton Williams compared to what the
Bengals did before the 2020 and 2021 seasons, right?
More or less agree?
What do you think about that?
Yeah, I think, sorry, I was just reading.
I got the dates wrong.
on the franchise tag.
It's the 17th through the third.
So big difference.
But, yeah.
Anyways, yeah, there's similar blueprints.
What's interesting is both teams, shocker,
have guys that I want that you want,
that we've wanted in the past.
And the Seahawks have certainly done it differently.
And yet, when you check the Fandall odds,
they're four and a half point favorites for a reason,
which I think is interesting to say,
the least. So we'll get to the Seahawks side of things coming up next.

Sam Donald isn't Joe Burrow from a contract perspective or from an on-field play perspective.
but he is not on a rookie deal either.
And so inherently, the way Seattle is going to build their team is going to look different
from the way the Patriots built their team.
However, in terms of using all of the resources available to them to add to this roster
in as many different spots as possible, while drafting well,
the Seahawks did that and have built this team.
that is one of the best rosters in the NFL, obviously, across the board and is now competing
for a Super Bowl.
And like you said, favored significantly to win a Super Bowl with veterans all over the place,
young guys making plays in the Reclamation Project in Sam Darnold.
But another team that isn't afraid of big swings, right?
Both of these teams not afraid to identify and take a big swing that the Leonard
Williams trade, the Sam Darnold quarterback change for the Seahawks among those big swings
that help the Seahawks get to this point. Yeah, I mean, there were people that thought that
trading Gino Smith and signing Sam Darnold was a lateral mover worse, like made them worse.
And the Seattle build is even harder because it's hard to find a quarterback. Like, it's hard to
do it that way in free agency and find a guy that can guide you the way he has. But you just think
about the hits, like Jackson Smith and Jigba has been insane.
Nickyman Worry has really came in and made an impact right away.
Obviously, you have the Byron Murphy's and all of the trench guys on that defense,
and that defense is what makes them go.
But their run game, like Kenneth Walker's awesome.
Zach Charbonnet for a big part of the year was really productive for them.
And I believe he's out this week.
But they go get, they spend on Cooper Cup.
And it's like, oh, yeah, he had a middle of the road season.
He mattered in that Rams game.
Like, he mattered when it mattered.
And that's it.
It's so easy to forget how close these games go down to the wire.
Like, think about 21 and 22.
Every piece you add can end up being the difference.
The Eli Apples are the difference between winning and losing sometimes.
Doesn't mean you don't need all those other things, but then get more.
And in the Bengals, they need to view it that way as continually adding and trying to find ways
to get better because that player or players and that role guy that you're not thinking of may make
the play that's the difference between advancing, winning the division, advancing in the playoffs,
getting to the AFC championship game, all of those things.
And I think the Seahawks are a really good example of that.
And you have Joe Burrow.
Like, what a luxury.
I would much rather have Joe Burrow, Jamar Chase, and T. Higgins 1 through 3 than Sam Darnold
and Jackson Smith and Jigba and Cooper Cup.
Now, those guys are making less than the Bengals guys right now.
So you could take advantage of that.
At the same time, if you're the Bengals, it's like, man, that defense is awesome.
And can you, if you give Joe just some of that, he's going to thrive.
He's definitely going to thrive.
So there are a lot of guys on that team that you look at and you're like, they would look good in stripes.
And that's it.
Like that's the path regardless of what the who,
we know that the Patriots were first in spending in free agency.
The Seahawks were fourth.
They had gigantic holes that they wanted to fill.
Well, the Bengals, you just won six games.
Six.
You have gigantic holes you need to fill.
And so you're going to have to spend to do it.
What's interesting is despite the free agent spending,
which I hadn't seen that.
That's interesting.
That's news to me.
The Seahawks were 29th in the NFL and overall cash spend in 2025,
which makes it all the more impressive that they're getting to the point,
that they got to the point they got to.
But the savvy moves all over the place to help them get here,
I think are worth shouting out.
And also just worth pointing out,
the Seahawks joined the ranks of the teams that get to extensions early
and got that early extension for Charles Cross drafted in the 2022 draft.
during this playoff run, they got that extension done.
But the trades, the free agents that they added, have really hit.
And that's the credit to John Schneider.
They've identified talent in a good way,
and they haven't been afraid to do things a little bit differently,
notably trading for Rashid Shahid,
who has made a difference for them as a special teamer and on offense at times.
going and finding a reliable third or second option for your for your passing offense in Cooper Cup the signing of demarcus lawrence crazy crazy good signing trading for luther williams obviously like all these different things that they did to go get guys that are massive difference makers for this defense julian love another one like every single decision that they made last year for unrestricted free agents for trades has essentially hit
like all their big decisions.
I know they signed
no, it was two years ago.
He was just on IR this year.
So the depth that they've built,
the draft successes they've had,
you mentioned Byron Murphy,
also stored Devin Witherspoon in there.
I thought he was in the last corner in the NFL this year.
Yeah, I forgot.
I totally forgot about hit six overall or whatever.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
And he's been everything that you would hope he would be.
The way that they put together their coaching staff,
again, another second year coach versus a first year coach for his team in Vrable.
Really impressive job of team building and using all the assets available to you
to build depth and build a strong top of the roster as well, obviously,
with the accolades that have piled up for these couple of teams.
The other thing that really stands out, honestly, for both teams is just get lucky.
stay healthy.
And that always stands out.
These are two of the least injured teams in the NFL.
If somebody figures out and cracks that code for injury luck and it's like,
you know what?
Our strength and conditioning staff has figured out how to keep our guys healthier
than any other team.
Like somebody can figure that out consistently in this league.
That's going to be such a huge advantage because it's every year that the healthiest teams
make it the farthest.
Do you think Joe B.
Burrow with the Patriots roster or the Seahawks roster, either one.
If you just put Joe Burrow in there at quarterback, throw money out just in general.
Do you think that they would be in the Super Bowl?
You think he could lead both of these teams to where they are today?
That feels like an insane question.
The answer is yes.
Yeah.
Okay.
Yeah.
Yeah.
So that twofold.
One, it would drive me crazy if on the Bengals, knowing that you have,
That's the hardest piece.
It is the hardest piece.
And two, hopefully it's motivating.
And it gets them to significantly spend.
I think we're going to start to hear a little more chatter about the Bengals,
what they plan to do.
And they better because Joey B.
He didn't say anything.
He didn't do anything at Radio Row, really.
Why?
All lies on the Bengals.
The pressure's on.
Sometimes the best messages are left unsaid.
We'll see what the Bengals do.
Joe and Jamart
or not Joe and Jamar and T
they did it
yeah
not quite as many
not quite as many headlines
as when Joe
not as many but some
especially nationally
I didn't see a single national outlet cover
T. Higginson Jamar Chase
did you
no I'm sure they did
I mean NFL dot com for sure did right
I would imagine
maybe that they're doing a podcast together
I don't know if they're covering
Jamar and T talking about
joking about
Who they want to go.
Yeah.
Yeah.
It'd be an interesting Super Bowl.
If there are things to stand out to us, we might talk about the results of the Super Bowl in our next episode here.
I, we're recording this beforehand, obviously.
Very interested, interested to see if this is a game where these quarterback step up.
I think Drake May has played terrible football in the playoffs,
has played against some really good defenses.
And I think this might be the toughest defense, the Seahawks have faced.
in the playoffs, especially with Milton Williams out there.
So the defense is in this game.
Jamar said it.
He told Ocho.
He told Chad on Radio Road, defense wins championships.
And that could very well be the case this year.
And so we'll see how these games play out or if these quarterbacks can overcome what could be difference-making defenses on the other side.
That's going to do it, though, for this episode of the Lockdown Bengals podcast.
Until next time, thanks for listening.
today.
Hootah and have a good bye.
