Starting point is 00:00:00 It just hasn't gotten better for Jake Browning in the Cincinnati Bengals offense. It's another disaster performance against the Lions. Let's break it down. You are Locked on Bengals, your daily Cincinnati Bengals podcast. Part of the Locked on Podcast Network, your team every day. What on, Bengals fans, and welcome to another episode of the Lockdown Bengals podcast. Part of the Lockdown Podcast Network, your team every day for better or for worse. James Rupin and myself, Jake.
Starting point is 00:00:35 Lisco are here for you on Lockdown Bengals covering your favorite team. We're every day, and we welcome back all the everydayers out there, all of you who make us your first list. And appreciate all of you who are sticking with us here on lockdown Bengals as we're sticking with covering a team that has given us a very little positive to talk about in the last few weeks. Actually, there is some positivity that I will get to probably at some point in this episode, James, which hopefully isn't too shocking.
Starting point is 00:01:05 but it was another really, really, really bad game where the Bengals got blown out. They were unable to do anything on offense until they were trailing by three scores in the second half. And this is who this team is at this point, and severe change obviously is needed to. Today's episode is brought to you by Mazda. Stay tuned later in this episode for highlights
Starting point is 00:01:25 from this week's moving the game forward. Mazda, move and be moved. And James, another game where Jake Browning did not give the Cincinnati Bengals a chance to win the football game. No, he didn't. And this is why, and we didn't get to do the whole veteran quarterback episode, we hit it on it on our Thursday show going into Friday, going into the weekend. So if you didn't watch it or see it, this is why I want a quarterback.
Starting point is 00:01:48 I want another option because the Bengals don't have another option. They are scrooed. If Jake Browning, it doesn't play well, well, they're not going to Brett Rippin. They're not going to Sean Clifford, Mike White. Well, he wasn't elevated from the practice squad. But if that happens, like maybe that, like, that would be the next guy, that doesn't make anybody feel good. And so what's interesting in our locked-on Bengals insiders at join subtext.com slash locked-on Bengals, they found this out on Sunday morning what the Bengals were hoping to do, how the Bengals thought that they would be able to snap out of this offensive funk and they believed in their game plan.
Starting point is 00:02:29 And I had talked to multiple people within the building about what the, how. they thought that the past two games are going to be the outlier on offense. So they responded by scoring a whopping three points in the first three quarters and having just as many turnovers, three as points, having just as many Jamar Chase tackles three as points through the first three quarters. And when you do that, when literally they were, I'm telling, they were so, they believed, not that they were, I think they thought they were going to win the game, who doesn't convince themselves going into a game, you're going to win it when you're a competitor. But I think they thought regardless of the outcome, they were going to be able to put up points.
Starting point is 00:03:09 And yeah, you look at that final score, and that final score is kind of believable. Like on a good offensive day for them, I thought maybe 3724 was in the cards. It wasn't that way. This offense stinks and a few garbage time touchdowns, which are part of the positivity, I'm sure. But that's not going to change the way I feel. And I feel like Zach Taylor and Jake Browning combined failed today. That's what it comes back to. They kind of, I don't know if you watch the press conferences,
Starting point is 00:03:38 but Zach Taylor's like, oh, this, it's on me, it's on me. And then Jake comes in and he's like, I got to play better. It's on me. And I'm like, yeah, it's on y'all. You both let everybody down. And they better fix it quick because this offense is one of the worst in the NFL. And they have some awesome weapons, as we know. So they should not be one of the worst in the NFL.
Starting point is 00:04:00 At least they finally hit a couple of plays at Jamar Chase later in this game. but I say that as like a throw-in, a token, you know, compliment that I'm saying to be nice. Like, the way Browning played at the start of this game doesn't give the Bengals a chance to win games. He's late, he's inaccurate, he's frazzled in the pocket, and he knew that. He took accountability for it after the game. And when Zach's saying it's also on him, he's the head coach, he's a head coach play caller, well, yeah, I mean, you're preaching to the choir of Bengals fans who want you to give up play-calling responsibilities, I think, in many ways, Zach.
Starting point is 00:04:33 But the other thing is that you have to find ways to help your quarterback succeed. And through three weeks, we have not seen that. We haven't seen them get to plays that Jake Browning feels comfortable, confident, and is thriving. And he's instead making repeatedly bad decisions, looking like a deer in the headlights much too often.
Starting point is 00:04:52 The Bengals almost had two safeties in this game, instead only one counted, and had a number of hits on Jake Browning that could have been additional insult to injury that didn't count. But the way he played in this game, I mean, the interception he threw to Mike Keseki, and I've said this a few times now, I think, but the interception he threw to Mike Keseki would have been incomplete if there was no one on the field in the Detroit secondary.
Starting point is 00:05:18 It was that far behind Mike Kiske. Like, when you throw an interception that even if there are no defenders, it's not getting to your intended receiving, what are you doing? Like, how are you making an NFL row at that point that's that in absent? accurate and into that much traffic where there are two Detroit defenders that could have picked it off. And that was one of two interceptions, the two Detroit defenders had the best chance at in this game. The other one was just a really bad late inside throw to Jamar Chase on an outbreak. And like when you're playing like that, late, late. That was so late. That was
Starting point is 00:05:49 so late. That's the way to describe it. Yeah. And when you're playing like that early in the game, the defense gave you a chance early in the game. That's what gets me in this one. That's part of positivity for me in this one. When the game was in the balance early, Trey Hendrickson gets a one-on-one with Giovanni Manu out of the University of British Columbia right across to Georgia straight for me. And Giovanni shouldn't be on an NFL roster. He's a practice squad player. He was overdrafted by the Lions. And when they got one-on-ones, Joseph Osai beat him like a drum and Trey Hendrickson beat him like a drum. They just didn't get enough of those one-on-ones. I'm critical of the defensive game plan on the first
Starting point is 00:06:27 drive in this game, but they got the strip back. They forced multiple first half puns. And the offense rewarded them by putting them on the field in the red zone immediately with the Jake Browning Interception of Jake Browning. So like the complimentary football, not even close. And it's all on the offense to me. Yeah, the defense had issues on the first drive for sure. I'm sure at some point I'll rip out Golden's game plan for the first drive of the game. But they got those stops early and were just rewarded with a pile of steaming dog poop. Like here, here's what you get from the offense.
Starting point is 00:06:58 Here's the present that we're giving you after you got a. takeaway after we laid an egg on our first drive. You gave us a ball back here. We'll give the, we'll give you the opportunity to get a red zone stop as a reward. Going into the fourth quarter, the Bengals had been outscored 104 to 16 in their last 11 quarters. So that's the Minnesota game, the Denver game, and then the first three quarters tonight when it was 28 to 3. Three points, they hadn't scored a touchdown on 19 consecutive drives. That doesn't include a kneel down at the end of a first half. It's just, it is the offense. It's 100% on the offense. The offense that, again, they go on the road. They were really struggling, but they thought that
Starting point is 00:07:45 they were going to turn a corner tonight and against the Lions. And fourth quarter aside, the game's over. It's 28 to 3. It's 28 to 3. And it's as ugly, I mean, those interceptions, the Kirby Joseph one, he's a center fielder. I mean, where it is just a lollipop throw, I'm not sure there is an everydayer that list is that could not have caught that ball because it was just, you know, shout out to the everydayers. You guys could have intercepted Jake Browning today because it was a lollipop. It was way easier than a punt because you didn't have the whole team running at you.
Starting point is 00:08:25 And so when you're giving the ball away like that and taking, safeties. And that's that first safety on Jake Browning. I know it didn't count because of the holding. That's awful awareness. Like just awful. You're holding the ball and holding the ball. You got to know I'm in the end zone. I got to make a decision. And by the way, maybe that is throwing it away and throwing it over a receiver's head into the stands. Fine. But you can't just sit there and then get sacked. That can't happen. And so, yeah, this this offense, like it's official. This offense is costing the Bengals games. And that's Jake Browning and Zach Taylor. And that's who I'm looking at. And I don't know the solution. I don't know if it's just going to stay the way it's
Starting point is 00:09:10 the way it is, but it needs something. Something has to change, whether it's their process, their mindset, their mentality, their approach, going and getting a veteran quarterback. So you have another option that you actually believe can guide your offense. I don't know, but something has to change. Yeah, it's been remarkably bad. I think Jake Browning is at the center of it. The way he played quarterback before this game was in blowout territory was miserable. You can credit him for the way he played in the fourth quarter to some degree. The first touchdown pass to Jbar Chase was a sensational play. It's just it doesn't matter at that point. Like you can give him his flowers for it for sure. It just doesn't matter when you can only score when you're down at least three scores or four scores.
Starting point is 00:09:56 or whatever it is. They did not move the ball outside of the end of the first half, unless they were down at least 18 points. Anyway, let's get to the defense that actually started this game pretty well. We'll discuss that topic. There are some signs of life here. It's just, is it enough? I don't think so.
Starting point is 00:10:15 We'll get there coming up next. Your favorite neighborhood spots while they run on Square. In this episode of Lockedown Bengals is brought to you by Square. There are certain businesses that truly make the neighborhood feel like home, whether it's a local sports bar packed on game days, the coffee shop that knows your order by heart, and you're probably going to be leaning on the coffee on Monday morning, especially following that game on Sunday at Paycor Stadium.
Starting point is 00:10:40 These places bring people together. And when neighborhood businesses thrive, the whole neighborhood thrives. And that's why if you're going to get a slice of Goodfellas, maybe a pine at mad tree, little shake shack, park pour, root beer stand, any of the local spots at Cincinnati Square is a proud partner of more than 4 million neighborhood businesses around the world. That's $4 million. You can go to square.com slash go slash locked on NFL to learn more.
Starting point is 00:11:03 But before you do, go support your favorite neighborhood spot. You'll be happy you did. Square. See you in the neighborhood. We're also brought to your day today by Mazda. Mazda's moving the game forward for those who believe it's not just about playing the game. It's about redefining it. I like to hold up my Mazda car keys to the camera when we have an episode sponsored by Mazda
Starting point is 00:11:23 because Mazda knows that there are moments that do more than just put points on the board they move crowds, they move culture, and they keep moving the game forward. And we simply have not seen those moments from Jake Browning, from Zach Taylor, from the Cincinnati Bengals in anywhere close to enough of a frequency this year to give us belief that the Bengals are going to do the things they need to do to stay afloat until Joe Burrow gets back. But we did see hints from this defense, from Trey Hendrickson, from Miles Murphy, from these corners, DJ Turner really turning his game around.
Starting point is 00:11:56 In this first half, T.J. Slayton was great. And so if the defense can just keep pushing it a little harder, maybe that's enough for this Bengals offense to find their way. Whatever moves you, you can find it with Mazda. When you follow what moves you, the unexpected is only the beginning. And just like there's more to every highlight, there's more to a Mazda vehicle.
Starting point is 00:12:16 Mazda move and be moved. All right, Jake, let's get to this defense. Let's get to Trey Hendrickson and get to a group that just, and I'm not saying they aren't flawless. because they are. Oh, yeah. But coming into the year, what was everybody was saying, when you were here for training camp in August,
Starting point is 00:12:37 it was the defense could just be average. If they could just be average, right. I think that's what they are. Like, I think they're at that point where it's like, are they perfect? No. Are they going to buck up and get some stops for you at times? I think so.
Starting point is 00:12:56 I look at this and whether it's the sack numbers, the turnover, the quarterback hits, the fact that they held David Montgomery to 3.6 per carry, Jemir Gibbs to 4.5 on 12 carries along of nine. Like, there's a lot to like, it wasn't perfect. I don't like Joseph Osai on Sam LaPorte. I don't like some of the matchup situation. So there's still frustration.
Starting point is 00:13:20 So I'm not saying there's not, but like I would take this sort of performance from the defense, but they were put in such crappy positions throughout the game that it's, really tough to say, hey, go hold the Lions to under 30. And I think they held up their end of the bargain for the most part. It's 37 points on the scoreboard, right? Mm-hmm. And 14 of those came on short fields after Jake Browning turnovers. And two of those came on a safety.
Starting point is 00:13:46 That's 21 points on full drives that the Bengals allowed at this Detroit Lions offense. And given, I think Dan Campbell was playing remarkably conservative football because he had confidence in his defense against his Bengals offense. And rightly so. him punting on, what was it, like a fourth and six from the Bengals 40-something, not a characteristic Dan Campbell decision. Dan Campbell goes for it on fourth downs. You went for it on zero.
Starting point is 00:14:09 Fourth downs in this game, I think, knowing his opposition. But given that, the Lions were 2 of 8 on third downs in this game. You take that. If you would have told me the Bengals would hold the Lions of 2 of 8 on third downs, I would first ask, like, that's not very many third downs. But second, that's pretty good. Or you'd say how many fourth downs? How many fourth downs did they?
Starting point is 00:14:29 And then you would ask, yeah, like how many fourths does it? They were only at six yards per play in this game. Again, part of this is probably a function of knowing their opposition, knowing that this was a blowout early in this game. But early in this game, in the first half of this game, we'll talk about the first drive issues in another episode, probably, unless we decide to rag on Al Golden's plan for the first drive and the dropping defense events into coverage thing in this episode.
Starting point is 00:14:56 We'll see. We'll see what happens. but the Bengals go six-plays 32-yards punt. Trey Henderson forces the strip sack. The Bengals get the takeaway. How did the Bengals rewarded on offense? Three-plays, three-plays, six-yards punt. Bengals, defense steps up again.
Starting point is 00:15:13 They force another punt after the Bengals go three-and-out. The Bengals have punted twice. They haven't done anything on offense. In the second quarter, the Bengals get another punt. Jake Browning then throws the own red zone interception. The Bengals defense can't hold. up again, they give up the touchdown on the drive the Detroit starts from the 17-yard line. Bengals go punt again, and the defense, once again, forces a punt.
Starting point is 00:15:36 Jake Browning, two plays later. Interception. What did the Bengals defense do? Force another punt. And finally, the Bengals scores some offense. So if you're keeping track, that is three punts and a force fumble takeaway from this Bengals defense in the first half to get you to halftime at 14 to 3, a chance to get to 14 to seven if this offense had any sort of teeth to it, a chance to get the game tied.
Starting point is 00:15:59 But of course, coming out of the half, it takes two plays for Jake Browning to throw another interception and for the game to be blown up into 21 to 3. Yeah, and that's the real backbreaker, if you will, with the way Jake was playing. It's like even with the two picks, it's 14.3. You get the ball coming out of the half. If that's when the offense woke up, maybe you can make it a game. Maybe the defense still has enough. but time of possession was so dominated at one point and this is early in the game like early second quarter it's like 14 to 4 at one point or something yeah yeah like it was like 12 to 3 and I'm like well this can't this this is not going to work yeah like the play count was like 25 to 10 at one point early in this game there was a point I tweeted this out and I put it on multiple socials but Jake Browning had two interceptions and average 1.8 yards per attempt
Starting point is 00:16:52 more turnovers than his yards per attempt. Like at one point, his quarterback rating was 26. Now, it went up a lot in that fourth quarter. But man, like, it's just, it's hard. When you're that crappy, ask Browns fans. When you're that crappy on offense, it hurts your defense. And I don't mean this week's, but I just mean in general,
Starting point is 00:17:15 because they haven't had a quarterback at 50 years. They've seen plenty of Jake Brown. Like, that's what it does. And it sucks. And it's ugly. And the final score might not be as ugly on weeks like this, but it still sucks. No one had fun today. The people listening to this, Jake, did you have fun today watching this?
Starting point is 00:17:32 It wasn't fun. I don't even think the Lions fans, and there were a lot of Lions fans here, blue streaks. I bet they had fun. Let's be a good. They had fun. No, I think they had fun because they won, but it was like a really boring, like, everybody's going through the motions game. Because I agree with you on the Lions side. Like, I do think that they were just kind of like, this is how we're going to play this game
Starting point is 00:17:51 and we're just going to get through it. Yeah. I mean, it reminded me a little bit of the Chief's Eagle Super Bowl last year. I had fun watching that as someone who was enjoying the Schadenfreude of the Chiefs getting blown out in the Super Bowl. But like, yeah, it wasn't for all of my no rooting interest friends that were watching that game with me, they're like, this Super Bowl is very boring. And they weren't watching the game in the third quarter. So yeah, in that sense, not fun. Yeah. Yeah, I just, it's one of those, right? I just, I think the defense has plenty to fix.
Starting point is 00:18:31 But did they, have they held up their end enough? Like, yeah, Trey Hendrickson had two sacks and a strip sack and, like, that's it. Like, that's what you're talking about. Miles Murphy gets a big play and gets to celebrate. Osai did. And T.J. Slayton, two quarterback hits from the nose tackle. And he was really good in the run game in the first half. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:18:52 It was really impressed with DJ Slaten's first half in this game. If you would have told me the Lions run for 118 yards and their longest run is under 20 yards, and Jemir Gibbs' longest run is nine. Like you sign up for all of those right away at the beginning of the game. I would. Yeah, I think the defense did enough, right? You just look at the results early in the game until the Lions get their second shortfield touchdown. And then the wheels start to come off, right?
Starting point is 00:19:19 then a seven plays, 80 yards, a really ugly drive. But at that point it's 21 to 3, and you're probably a little bit demoralized because every time you got the stops, oh, I have to go defend a 30-yard field. I have to go defend a 17-yard field. Oh, the offense went three and out again. And then the Bengals finally started doing something on offense and got from 28 to 3 to 28 to 17. And then the wheels were still off for the defense.
Starting point is 00:19:45 Like you get one more stop. Maybe the game actually gets interesting. but the defense in that defense, right? If the defense was one of the better defenses in the NFL, which is never our hope or expectation, then maybe this game goes differently, but the defense did enough in this game where it's, you're saying, man, if they have Joe Burrow in this game,
Starting point is 00:20:03 they're probably feeling real different about the way this thing goes. So that's not a good feeling. There are some other positives we can shout out here. There's the Al Golden first drive topic if we have time for it. We'll see. Maybe we'll try to finish here. On a bit of a positive note, talk about whether there's enough signs of life to have any belief going into Lambeau Field in week six. We'll go there to finish the show coming up next.
Starting point is 00:20:31 Today's show is brought to you by Fandle, America's number one sportsbook. And man, the NFL season, it's in full swing. And right now, new customers can bet just $500 and get $300 in bonus bets if you win. That's right. Pick a bet, put down five bucks if it hits. You own like $300 in bonus bets to use across the app. So maybe you had the Lions at minus 10 and a half, which, hey, maybe you got them early on last week at minus eight and a half before the Monday night debacle in Denver. Well, you would have won.
Starting point is 00:21:01 And then when that bet hit, you'd unlock $300 in bonus bets to use across the app. And whether it's same game parlays, whether it's live bets, whether it's standard lines, but the Bengals are double digit, major double digit 14.5 point underdogs against the Packers at Lamb's. at least as of right now. You've got to get on all the fun with Fandle. What are you waiting for? Visit fandle.com to download the Fandle app today and get started. So we've told you out of Trey Hendrickson, who had a nice little game as a pass rush for in particular.
Starting point is 00:21:33 We've talked about T.J. Slate who I thought had a nice game as a run defender, especially early on. Miles Murphy got in on the fun with the sack, I believe, on a stunt that was a third down play, right? Or was it a second down play? Either way, it was part of ending a Detroit drive. DJ Turner targeted only once in this game, had the pass break up defending Amanra St. Brown.
Starting point is 00:21:53 Shout out DJ Turner for settling in as the season's gone on. It's kind of a career trend for him at this point. And I don't know, that's kind of it on defense. Logan Wilson, I think, had his worst game of the season. Chris Jenkins wasn't very impressive to me in this game. Orrin Berks got the start, and they had a rotation at linebacker that featured Logan Wilson being on the play for every single play of the game and a rotation with the linebackers
Starting point is 00:22:17 besides Logan Wilson on the field to meet your site playing only 36 snaps for the Bengals in this game, which seems very low compared to what he's been at for most of the year. But the Bengals are trying some different things on defense or trying some five-man defensive fronts with two linebackers, two off-ball linebackers, or
Starting point is 00:22:33 meeting Detroit's 12 personnel with some heavier defensive fronts. So try different things. I will say, I know I said this is going to be a positive note. Maybe we'll finish on some of the positives on offense, but like the drop in defensive ends into coverage stuff that we keep seeing from this team week after week just is driving me insane at this point i feel like i've
Starting point is 00:22:52 been hammering it in the film review episodes in particular for weeks the replacement pressures aren't working i'm sick of seeing joseph o's high getting picked on in coverage joseph was targeted i believe multiple times josephs i was targeted twice in covers today and like 18 of gherrador's targets in this game i think he threw 23 passes 20 something like that low 20s 18 of them i believe targeted a linebacker or a defensive end For the Bengals, only a handful of targets targeting any defensive backs in this game. Yeah, which is wild when you look and you see that Amman Ross, St. Brown, had eight catches on nine targets.
Starting point is 00:23:29 And Leporta, five catches on six targets. Like, Jared Gough was 19 of 23. Didn't have to throw it a lot. But boy, was he efficient. Boy, was he effective. And that's what happens when you drop Joseph Osai into coverage. You think Joseph Osai can guard me? You can't guard Sam Roporta.
Starting point is 00:23:45 I'm not sure. Maybe he will. Maybe he could. Maybe not. I don't want to find out. It's an impossible job that they're asking him to do. No doubt. Like,
Starting point is 00:23:51 I'm not laying in that situation. What are we doing it? Yeah. Like, I don't like Sam Laporta against Logan Wilson either. Like, I don't feel great about that. But, like, that's,
Starting point is 00:24:01 winebackers are going to have to guard tight ends at times. Like, that's what I agree with you. I think that's a really, it's a tough ask. And early in the game, Osai was targeted twice, cam sample once.
Starting point is 00:24:13 And it really stood out in some, like, what felt like big moments when the game wasn't decided yet. And that's got to change. I just don't understand what that does. The idea is that you can maybe get a free runner sometimes because you've confused protection, or maybe you've dropped an end into a slant window
Starting point is 00:24:36 or a hook window that the quarterback isn't anticipating. You get a cheeky interception here. We've seen Lou Anarumo do it successfully. We saw, I should say, Lou Aniromo do it successfully previously when he was with the Bengals. And there is a time in place for these, but this seems to be like the bread and butter of the Al Golden defense. And, you know, today we did see a run slant and a run blitz get a tackle for loss. We saw a stunt get Miles Murphy's sex.
Starting point is 00:24:57 We saw some things work, but the replacement pressures are still driving me a little bit crazy, seeing these defensive ends drop into coverage. You could argue San Leportez is as good of a receiving side in as anyone in the league. Like, do you embarrass him? He had a good game. They could not tackle it. Do you want Joseph Osai guarding him? No, sir. And you're right, along the sideline, that's when I thought they were starting to break on defense.
Starting point is 00:25:21 Because along the sideline, Laporta cuts up field and doesn't, he gets knocked out of bounds, but isn't tackled. No, my four guys should have tackled him. And I was like, oh, man, this could be, this could be the breaking point. Look, R tone didn't change. And it shouldn't change. But the offense did score three straight touchdowns in the fourth quarter. and so if we're going to finish on a positive that is a positive and the throw of the game for Jake Browning was him rolling out to the right finding Jamar Chase Jamar gets both beat down heck of a catch great throw great catch yeah and and maybe and look after that it's a double move but then they drive downfield then it's a real drive I think that the double move was ridiculous I can't believe the Lions gave that up.
Starting point is 00:26:15 But you get four first downs on that, that final touchdown drive. Andre Yosevash got going a little bit. Maybe you can build off that. Maybe you can. I mean, you need to. Obviously, their last drive of the game was a safety. But to score three straight touchdowns, like maybe. But that's, that's like, how do you not, you go 19 straight possessions without scoring a touchdown?
Starting point is 00:26:40 And then you score three touchdowns and then obviously you have the safety late, which is a tough spot because you've got to push the ball down the field. Detroit lost a lot of corners to injuries in this game. Rock Yassin was in and out throughout the game. Brian Branch was playing through something, I think. But at least they found something. At least they got Jamar Chase going. That is a step in the right direction.
Starting point is 00:27:03 Jake Brown in completing passes to Jamar Chase. Does he need to pick better times and places to try to force the ball to Jamar? Yes, is it so nice to see Jamar get going a little bit in this game, the scramble touchdown, the double move. That's nice to see. It's nice to see Andre Yosevash finally put some numbers up, still waiting for T. Higgins to have his opportunity to put numbers up. Thought Somaget P. Ryan played another nice game.
Starting point is 00:27:26 And I actually played a lot in this game, like nearly an even snap split between Samaj and Chase Brown. And I think that's something perhaps to monitor with the way this running game is going. And, I mean, it's been tough for Chase Brown this year. They're very excited for his ability as a player, but they've obviously still struggled in the run game. The offensive line, not much better in the run game today. We'll see how they look on tape.
Starting point is 00:27:51 Obviously, Dylan Fairchild on that safety, not a good look. Orlando Brown had his hands full when he was trying to deal with Aidan Hutchinson in this game. The sack on the flea flicker was not good. Marius Mims did give up only the sack on the play that was called back, I think. So I think maybe when we go back and look at a Marius Mims on tape, that might be nice to watch. Might see a bounce back game from a Marius there, but not much else good to talk about on offense,
Starting point is 00:28:16 despite the scoring late. I thought the offensive line did start the game well. I thought they finished the game really poorly. I think early Jake was around 30% of his dropbacks that were pressured. He finished over 50%. So when they're pinning their ears back in the second half, the past protection did not hold up. But again, some of that we'll see when we rewatch the tape.
Starting point is 00:28:36 Sure. And that's when it's 28 to 3, that's that's been in your ears back yeah no doubt and uh one last bright spot evan McPherson good from 50 money mad yeah and tried to try to get that onside kick man respect the effort respect the hustle from from Evan McPherson there man diving in that pile as a kicker yeah no doubt and i thought he had it that's a that's a tough one to grab of course uh William wagner high snap ryan rico shout out to you getting it down yeah hey yeah So the hope here, right, is that the defense is showing some signs of life against a really good Detroit offense.
Starting point is 00:29:15 They got the early stops. They got the punts. They got the forced fumble. They found the matchup with Giovanni Manu. They went after it a few times and that they've maybe found something. But maybe the doors open at quarterback at this point. Maybe a change is coming. Do you think that's happening?
Starting point is 00:29:31 Do we not think that's happening? That'll be something that we get to this week as the Bengals prepare for another. brutal NFC North matchup with the Green Bay Packers who, yes, they're two one-in-one, but still look like a contender to me, at least comparing them especially to what the Bengals are doing right now. And that's what we've got to look forward to, James. Anything else from this one before you get out of here? I like points. Start scoring points. Before garbage time, preferably. That's going to do it for this episode of the Lockdown Bengals podcast. Until next time, thanks for listening. And have a good one.
