Locked On Bengals - Daily Podcast On The Cincinnati Bengals - Cincinnati Bengals’ Free Agency Has Been a HUGE Disappointment
Episode Date: March 12, 2026The Cincinnati Bengals had a strong start to free agency, but have missed opportunity after opportunity on deals in their wheelhouse to improve their roster. Jake Liscow and James Rapien discuss why t...rading for Osa Odighizuwa would have made sense, and lament missing out on mid-range deals over the last two days that could have patched holes before the pickins' got slim for remaining free agents. The Bengals' plan appears to be derailed, and while there are moves to be made, they need to prove they can get back on track before it's too late. Other teams keep doing the things that the Cincinnati Bengals need to be doing,
and the Bengals are just missing opportunities left and right.

What up Bengals fans and welcome to another episode of the Lockdown Bengals podcast.

podcast network in the land.
He's Jens Rapine. I'm Jake Lisco, and together we are.
locked on Bengals, even when the Bengals do nothing, we are still here bringing you free agency
coverage of all the things that the Bengals should have done, trying to find a path toward
success. If it even still exists now that free agency has been largely picked over their
trades happening that the Bengals didn't do that they should have done, their free agent signings
that are happening that the Bengals didn't do that they should have done. And well, we've been
covering this team collectively between the two of the three of the ones.
us since 2016 on this podcast. It's your best place to get up to date on everything happening
with the Bengals from a couple of guys that have been doing this for a long time. And on days like
today, James, I am more tired than normal thinking about this football team and the way this
free agency period has gone. The everydayers knew that we had large expectations for the Bengals
this free agency period. That is what the plan was that they have laid out themselves.
And currently they are well, well short of expectations, hard to see how they could possibly meet them at this point.
That's what we discussed today in the episode brought to the people by Fandul where you can get a boost for your wins, bigger wins, with the college basketball parley profit boost.
Head to Fanbool.com right now to get started.
And James Oza-Digizuo was traded for a third round pick to the San Francisco 49ers today.
The Bengals own a pick in the third round that is earlier than that of the San Francisco.
Francisco 49ers, ergo, the Bengals must not have called the Dallas Cowboys about Osir Diggi
Zua.
That's a reasonable price to pay for a solid to above average to good defensive player at a
position you desperately need.
But as far as we know, the Bengals weren't interested.
Yeah.
It's, this is the biggest one for me.
Like, out of everything that's happened, it just seemed like such an easy one.
Like maybe they just didn't believe in Logan Hall, right?
Maybe they looked at Leo Chenal and they said,
I mean, it's a really good linebacker class in this draft.
We wanted one of the big guys.
We wanted Quay Walker.
Right.
We wanted Devin Lloyd.
But if we weren't going to get those guys,
then we're just going to address it in the draft.
Maybe.
But Osa Diggi Zua is a cost-controlled,
27-year-old interior defensive lineman that would have been the highest paid
defensive lineman if he was a free agent in this year's class.
just signed a new deal last year.
The Cowboys, I think, are idiots for wanting to trade him
and putting themselves in a position where they felt like they needed to trade him.
And so when there was just that rumor,
and Jonathan Jones of CBS Sports was the first to report like,
hey, teams think that Osa Diggi Zua could be available.
And it was Tuesday afternoon.
I was like, in, in.
I'll do 72nd overall, which is the Bengals third round pick
and one of their sixth round picks if I have to,
because it fills a need with a guy that can help fill it now next year, the year after,
and maybe beyond.
He would fit what they do.
He would give them some juice on the interior.
And there just aren't many guys in this free agent class that would do that.
And it would fill a major need with a guy that can be part of the process, the face of your defense,
which Brian Cook, obviously you're hoping is.
Boye-Moffay, obviously you're hoping he is.
He would fit that.
And so all in, you look at the contracts, $57 million over three years, like, reasonable.
So there's just no reason why you wouldn't want a guy who's among the best interior pass rushers by a bunch of metrics.
And is regardless going to be a disruptor that you haven't had on the interior.
Like it just made too much sense.
And so when I saw he was getting traded to the 49ers, I was like, oh, the 49ers gave up their second rounder then.
because that would have been in the 60s.
No, they didn't do that.
They, or 50s.
They gave up the 90-second pick, which the Bengals could have easily be.
Yeah.
And it just adds to what has been a very disappointing two days.
There are all these things that have happened.
We talked yesterday about the O'Sman-Hall and Logan Hall a lot.
I don't think that just to be clear, you were doing this earlier,
but that is not an excuse for what they've done.
like if they weren't interested in those guys do something else do the osso a diggyzua trade
figure it out with a different one of these linebackers that you had a large role in mind for before
they signed with other teams because the theme of this free agency has quickly gone from
good players with quality playoff experience super bowl experience to did you think that was enough
because i like those two moves right
the full circle is we still like what they did at the beginning of this thing.
We like the deal they got done with Dalton Riser at a free agency.
We like the Brian Cook deal.
We like the Boy A Mafet deal.
We're going to circle back to the Boy A Mafia deal because there are details about the way that contract was structured that really run me the wrong way.
And it's kind of a repeat of a conversation we had last year about T. Higgins.
But the conclusion of our episode on Monday, when we recap,
the day that was was that can't be it.
They need to go find more impact players or more mid-range players.
They've done neither of those things now for two days,
which at this point really begs the question of what are the Bengals working on?
Because you get to this point,
I think the only way the Bengals have gotten to this point
is if things that they were working on have not come to fruition,
that they were anticipating getting done.
or maybe the market developed in a way they didn't anticipate guys got paid more.
Maybe it was guaranteed money.
Maybe it was this.
Maybe it was that.
But I don't think they get to the point they're at today if they haven't missed things in the last two days.
So what have they been doing?
What's next?
Those are the questions that I have because it doesn't seem like there's anything
happening because nothing has happened.
Yeah.
Yeah.
It's so underwhelming because they got off to such a good start in the,
they're they're they're when you have as many weaknesses as they have it's almost easier because
you can pick 52 different ways to make your defense better like when we were putting together like
free agent plans and pre in all that stuff i was thinking about it and it's like man you could sell me
on 80 000 versions of this and i would be fine with it and and now we're at like eight versions
like how i think that generous too it might be far less
less than eight. Like it's really hard to find that path as we have discussed and we'll discuss.
And I don't know the why, but sometimes the why doesn't matter. Like, why are they in this position?
What happened? Well, it really doesn't matter because your job is to get these deals done. Your
job is to solve this defense. I wanted minimum for starting level defensive players.
My standard was five.
I would have been underwhelmed a bit if they had left me with four.
Well, right now they're at two.
And a lot of the guys that are at that level are gone.
And it's going to make it really hard to do that at linebacker where I'm not sure there's a guy where I'm going to be like, oh, yeah, linebacker's pretty fixed.
Like, that's what I wanted.
I wanted to go into this draft feeling like you didn't have to reach at a spot because you felt like, you felt like,
you needed to fill it.
Because it's like a complete circle that they just keep going in over and over and over.
Oh, they have a need.
They should fill it in free agency.
They don't do it adequately enough.
And then they need to go to the draft.
And then they reach in the draft.
And then that player isn't good enough to fill that need.
And so then they have that need in free agency.
And then it just goes around and around and around.
And I was hoping that they would understand that they needed to fill those gaps, put some
calc into those holes.
And then it's at least sealed and solid.
If you get to the draft,
and the guy you want at that particular position isn't there.
And you're right.
It's probably less than eight paths of that being the case.
But we do need to continue the conversation.
What the hell is going on at Paycor Stadium?
What went wrong?
Did something go wrong?
We'll continue coming up next.
Today's show is brought to you by Fandul in college.

James, can I vent about contract structures and my fears about cap management or should we talk about the plan that we think has fallen apart first?
Well, I think it goes hand in hand.
Right? I do. And did that, did the way they structured Maffa's deal impact their plan when they started going after these guys? So let's do that because on day one, they go out and they get Brian Cook. As soon as we're done recording our instant recap, boy, Maffa is a bengal. And it's like, bang, boom. And then you're hearing that they're in online back.
And they're interested in linebacker and it's going to happen.
And they're interested in Devin Lloyd and they're in the running for Devin Lloyd.
And if they get Devin Lloyd, I mean, what a first day that would have been.
And I really wish I didn't want to spend big at lineback.
I really wish they would have gotten Devin Lloyd, especially now.
Because it's just where has that gone?
Why has that gone?
We have more details of where they're at cap wise.
And part of it is because of how they structure Boyer Maffa's deal.
So I think I teed you up.
So let's get to Tamafe and what's really making you angry about this structure.
Yeah.
I also want to reflect on, we've been doing this a lot, like when the Bengals have signed guys.
So you go back to when they signed Ted Karrison, Alex Kappa, which is the closest thing in terms of like bang, bang, here's two deals at positions of need right at the way, right away at the beginning of free agency.
It was those two guys a few years ago.
They didn't make another move until Eli Apple and Hayden Hearst, which was, I guess it would be the Thursday of that week, I believe, was when those deals came down.
So we'll see maybe they sign some guys tomorrow.
If they get through tomorrow without signing guys,
I don't know how much lower this crash out can get
that the Bengals fan base is collectively experiencing.
But yeah, let's talk about the cap structures here.
Last year, we did an episode after we had all the details
on T. Higgins and Jamar Chases,
contracts and the structures they signed when they did the extensions with the Bengals.
And we have one titled Salary Cap Malpractice,
something along those lines.
And that was because the Cincinnati Bengals,
decided to give T. Higgins roster bonus money that wasn't prorated.
They took part of money that could have been prorated and lowered his salary cap hit that year
by another $4 million or so.
And they said, you know what, we don't want to do that.
We're going to put all that money against the cap into 2025, the first year of that deal.
So they took a signing bonus of $15 million and gave him a roster bonus who didn't pro rate
of $5 million.
and that unnecessarily inflates that year one cap hit.
That's an indication that the Bengals don't want to spend more money.
If I hear the Bengals talk about how they used all their resources
and they were up against the cap this year,
it will be the biggest load of BS I have ever heard from this team
in a long history of them feeding us BS about their cap management style
because of not only that, which they repeated with Boye-Mafé,
where again, they gave them a $15 million-dollar signing bonus.
They gave them a $4 million roster bonus.
it doesn't pro-rate, this cap hit is bigger than it needs to be.
And that's before we even talk about the base salary.
A lot of teams would do a much lower base salary than Boyet Maffa gets,
and they would put that into signing bonus.
So, again, lower the cap hit now because the cap is going up in the future.
We can deal with that cap expense next year, where, by the way,
the Bengals currently have $114 million in projected cap space,
and that number will probably go up.
So not only do we have this element of things,
where the Bengals have inflated Boy amafi's cap hit,
needlessly by at least three and a half million dollars, I would say,
or three million dollars, I would say.
It came in three million dollars higher than I expected it to be anyway.
Yeah.
Three or four million.
They also have these restructure triggers they can pull.
They have a restructure level on Joe Burrow and on Jamar Chase
that both would be reasonable courses of action for most teams this year.
I think just about every quarterback has had their salary restructured into signing
bonus this year to free up cap space. Again, this changes nothing for the player, just frees up
cap space. And the reason you do this if you're a football team with a quarterback on a big contract
is because you want to sign players and spend money to try to win. And the fact that the Bengals are
not doing this or haven't yet, they still could. Maybe they pull that trade for Max Crosby out
of their hat, right? And then they have to restructure Joe Burrow to make that work. Great. I would love
to see that happen. But when you combine that and the way that they've structured Mafe to make his
year one cap hit oversized like they did with tea like they did with jimar to some extent to a lesser
extent but to some extent that is not a good sign for them being willing to spend money as this
free agency continues to get picked over yeah yeah it's i don't know why they continue to do stuff
like this when it's it's clear enough.
Like there are enough people that are smart enough to know like about it because you're
paying attention to it because of the Andre Prada's of the world because we're going to talk
about it because we're going to ask about it.
Like this cost you like that $3 million in cap space.
That's that's Chase Brown's cap hit this year.
You know, like you think about it that way.
Like that's what it is.
Like, that can cost you a, like, if you sign a guy to a two-year deal, and he's a pretty, like, that's your swing tackle for sure.
That's your swing tackle budget.
I bet you that's pretty close to Leo Chanel's cap hit this year.
Yeah.
It's a good one.
Yeah, I was trying to think.
Yeah.
So there you go.
It's, you got to be able to maximize what you have.
everyone has the same amount of cap space.
And maximizing it is,
it's the key.
It's the key to everything.
And the other key is Joe Burrow.
And you mentioned Joe Burrow restructuring.
He's aware of all these quarterbacks that have restructured.
He's aware that the Bengals haven't.
And I don't know how into the weeds he would get with the cap,
but I know he's aware how teams are willing to move things around,
willing to push the envelope.
And I guarantee you he is very, very disappointed at this point with what they've done.
Now, is he a little more patient than us?
Sure.
He's Joe Burrow.
He's focused on his stuff.
He's not refreshing Twitter every second and trying to stay in the news exactly when it happens.
At the same time, was he the one that text Ramar about that Max Crosby trade when I went through initially?
Like, Joe pays attention.
And he's paying attention now.
And that's what's scary about this.
I think the Bengals came into this knowing that they really needed to go after it.
And it felt that way in the building.
And suddenly we're one day in it felt like they felt it and their actions backed it up.
Two days in, okay, it's a little law.
Now we're three days in.
And it's like, all right, well, what the hell went wrong?
And is it even fixable at this point?
Yeah.
I think that's it, right?
Like I was like, okay, maybe they won't do anything on day two.
You thought they were going to do something on day two.
I was a little skeptical.
You can go check out.
the end of Monday's episode and end of Monday's third episode for when that conversation came up toward
the end of that episode but I didn't think like Lee and all was out there you know like some of
these obvious targets it just felt like that would make sense and they know doubt for day too yeah and
and now we're seeing the Bengals kind of do what they've done in recent years where they're looking
for those value guys that are lingering and maybe their market isn't there and and that's who they're
looking for but those guys aren't really there at positions that they need on the kinds of guys that
they like to go after.
So I do think that the plan went off the rails.
I do think that they had a plan to sign more guys than they've signed.
I think they have faced a rude reality that some of those players cost more,
maybe than they wanted to pay,
maybe guaranteed money got in the way.
Like I've said,
it is off to the case for them.
I looked it up,
by the way,
Leo Chanel's year one cap hit with the commanders is just over $4 million.
Goes up to $10 million in years two and three,
but the commanders with all of their cap space this year still,
minimize that year one cap hit because that is what
85% of teams
what you should do NFL do
yes doesn't necessarily mean you're going to win
but it means you have more resources and flexibility to
figure things out in the current year again I think the plan has gone off the rails
James let's let's break that down a little bit more because a lot of people are
out there saying man this is of course this is what was going to happen I still think
this is a surprise I'm surprised here
as we've gone two days without assigning to talk about.
So let's finish the show with that conversation
and discuss what the path could look like coming up next.
It's tax time.
But for a lot of us, the old way of doing taxes is, well, it's a lot.
Trying to book an appointment that's not the most convenient,
sitting in a waiting room with a stack of papers,
emailing back and forth,
and wondering if they really understand your situation.
But this year, you're getting a major upgrade with Intuit TurboTax.

and book your appointment today.
Surprised, James.
What went wrong?
They're trying to sign guys, and I assume they're just not happening because, like we've
said, a couple of times, one of the reasons is so disappointing, they started out so strong.
We were so pumped with the first couple of moves and what that could mean about what was to
come.
And the aggression fell off or seemed to you from the outside.
Yeah, I think that there are some surprised people in the building.
And that's what's scary.
I think that's the scariest part about this is like if the plan was, I'd never really
got the sense last year what the plan exactly was.
And it just felt like they were trying to juggle too much.
And it really did feel like that Jamar and T like lingering, what is it going to cost to get
them?
We know we have to.
That really impacted what they did in free agency, which it shouldn't have, but it felt
like it did.
It's no excuse, but it feels like.
like it was just used as one. This year, I think they were fully focused on free agency.
I think that they're not worried about Dax or DJ or anything like that. They know they needed
to add a lot of talent. They know that they were deficient in a bunch of spots. And I think
they were in on linebacker early. And so all of those linebackers are gone. You don't have one.
You're able to get a safety and you're better there. You're worse at edge because you traded
Joseph Osai and Trey Hendrickson for Bolié,
Maffet, essentially.
Like, that's a heck of a three days.
First day, successful, but you have to keep going.
And they didn't.
They took multiple steps back,
and they're worse now everywhere,
but safety.
And that's unacceptable.
You can't do that.
And I'll bring it up again.
Joe's watching.
And Jamar's watching, and they feel it.
When Jamar crashed out.
when he thought Max Cosby was going to Baltimore.
Like, he wants real dudes on that team in that building.
That's why the Osa Dickey-Zua trade, it made too much sense.
You get this guy that fills a need, and he's going to plug right in and help your pass rush.
Yeah.
And I just, I wonder where they go from here.
And I really wonder what went wrong because something had to go wrong because I genuinely think that there is a surprise in the building.
They're trying to be patient, but there's a surprise in the building that more hasn't been done.
Well, and free agency has really been picked over this year.
In past years that we're talking about where, you know, they get to later days and they're making some deals happen.
Like, it was around this time.
It was like an hour ago, a couple of years ago on Wednesday that they figured it out with Orlando Brown.
And I was leaving for dinner.
And it saved them.
Saved that whole free agency period.
Go ahead.
And like that guy isn't still out there this year?
that like he was conspicuously at the top of our free agent rankings and still out there that year
and this year it's like jacquam brisker juan jennings harold evocati kelsey uh from the inquire
said that the bengals aren't in on arnold abicati and then like who else is at the top here
that's going to swoop in and and be the guy like we're still talking about a lot of the same guys
but the young guys are no longer there,
and the opportunity to trade for Osa Odigizua has passed you by.
So now you're talking about what?
You're talking about Jadavia and Clani, Joey Bosa, Cam Jordan, DJ Reader.
We haven't talked about corner yet.
I told you this earlier.
Like we should be at the part of the free agency program
where we're talking about, you know, they probably should get a corner.
Probably should get some competition for Jalen Davis in the slot
or somebody who could give them a little bit of flexibility.
but right now they just have Jalen Davis Daxhill and DJ Turner.
So like we could be talking about corner.
But again, going down the list,
like talk about Bobby Wagner and Shaq Thompson and Levante,
David at linebacker, Callais Campbell for the 17th year in a row.
I think we mentioned Al-Qaeda Muhammad yesterday,
but like these are all guys that are not in the Bengals Wheelhouse at that point.
Not a single one of these guys is like, yeah,
that's a guy that Bengals would go after.
And that might be where they're at because these are the guys that are available.
Yeah, it's, it's tough.
Like, it literally, you look at it and they've never had ties to Judavian Clowny.
He's been a free agent how many times.
And they've just never, they've never went down that path.
And I just, usually when that's the case, they're just not interested.
They're just out for whatever reason.
The Joey Bosa stuff, like maybe, but I could also see him saying,
hey, I want to go play with Osa, Digi Zua, and Joe Bosa, or Nick Bosa in San Francisco.
You know, like, I just wonder what, what were they thinking?
What, was it, was it Hargrave?
They were thinking they were going to get Hargrave after he was released,
and then he ended up getting a bigger deal from the Packers.
Were they, I don't know.
I just, I don't know.
Are they, this is the thing.
I guess this is where I can, it's not even optimistic, but it's a real question.
do you think that things changed last night
when Max Crosby was suddenly available again for them?
Like do you think that they like, like reevaluated things a bit
and maybe that's why they're kind of moving slower now?
Like I, because I just don't understand why else they would.
That would be something that we could look back on with hindsight
and say that's what happened.
If that trade comes to pass, hey, man, Adam Jones thinks this happening.
Pac-Man Jones says it's happening.
Well, he said it might happen.
I guess that's different.
Yeah.
So, but that's it.
Like the Adam thing, whatever.
But like if that isn't it, why, what else would it be other than they're either scared off by prices, not, not moving fast enough?
Like, their jobs are on the line.
Like, the whole coaching staff is on the line this year.
Like, they know.
did they surprise themselves with getting boy amafay done and then they're like oh we're out of cap
which is a total cop out by the way and i explained that earlier like there's no you cannot make you
cannot cry poor and say you spent all your money when you have all these restructures you can do i wish
i had cash spending i don't think there's uh enough information in these databases yet to tell you
where the Bengals are for cash spent accurately for 2026.
So I guess we'll see where they land there.
The contracts aren't all updated yet because like the commander still says
210 million for this year and over the cap and they spent a ton of money in free agency
in the last couple of days.
So yeah, I'm curious.
They are currently well below my cash spend projection for them this year, about 25 million.
And at first I thought they were going to go over that number.
So there seemed to be moves left for them to make James.
And I adjusted my cash spend projection for them down this year based on the last couple of years where they've been a little bit short of what I thought they would spend.
And they're still well short of that number.
So I still expect them to spend some money.
But like, man, a lot of these deals in the last couple of days really would have made a whole lot of sense.
Yeah.
I would have.
And meanwhile, we're watching Fred Henderson go to Baltimore.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Which we called.
We knew it.
We knew it.
Easy call, but still called.
And it's tough.
Mark, Chase, waking up and asking people of today's April 1st, man.
Yeah.
Honestly, that's what sucks is.
You just know that those guys are,
they're watching close, but they know they need more, which is a really tough spot.
Like, Jumar feels like he's the best in the world, but he knows deep down that he cannot do it.
Joe feels like he's the best in the world, but he doesn't look up to anybody when he's on the field at quarterback.
And yet, they know that they need to add, and they haven't added enough.
And there were a lot of ways they could have done it, and they haven't done it.
and that's really disappointing.
And maybe by the time half of you hear this or watch this, they have, but as of now,
they haven't.
And it's getting harder and harder, like I said, for the path to this being a successful
free agent period, that being visible to steal your line of thinking.
And when you can't see the path, it's how you trip up real easy.
And the Bengals have put themselves in this position.
They can show us that they're great pathfinderers in hindsight.
site by figuring things out here in the next couple of days.
As we were recording, James, 10 minutes ago, Max Crosby tweeted,
everything happens for a reason, believe nothing you hear in half of what you see.
I'm a Raider.
I'm back.
And then an ex-wit have to finish things off.
So I guess that Adam Jones's sources.
We'll see.
They're trying to rebuild his value.
Yeah, we'll see.
We'll see.
Undertaker.
out of a burning door on Max Crosby's
Twitter page. Let's wrap up there, James. Hopefully we have
something to talk about tomorrow. Hopefully the path that we
cannot currently find is illuminated by some
bushwhacking from Duke Tobin and this Cincinnati Bengals front
office, but I know it was a big crash out for Bengals fans
on Wednesday. Two days of an activity will do that to you. Two days
of watching players that we've been talking about for weeks,
go to other teams. It's tough. And I can't blame
anybody for being very frustrated with this team.
and the inactivity right now.
We'll see what comes to pass over the next couple of days,
and we'll have you covered right here on Lockdown Bengals.
Until next time,
thanks for listening to this episode of the Lockdown Bengals podcast.
Hootay.
And have a good.
