Marcus, we're going to start with the Dallas Cowboys on this crossover.
What's going on with those Cowboys in this season, which feels like there's some parallels
to that Cincinnati Bengals season?
What's the biggest story with the Cowboys?
Yeah, I was just going to say anything that you watched Bengals fans this year from your
team, it's basically the same in the NFC with the Cowboys.
Just a very disappointing year for, listen, a lot of people thought the Cowboys were going to be
a playoff team, maybe not beat the 12.
win team that we saw last year, but a surefire playoff team, but they had so many injuries earlier
than the year, and they got off to a slow start. And then once they finally started playing better,
Doc Prescott lost for the year with a hamstring injury. And now you're just in this weird
five and seven season where they're not in the running for the first pick. And they're not in the
running really to make the playoffs either. So you're stuck in the worst spot to be in the NFL, which is in the
middle and just trying to figure out ways to make the final five games of the season interesting.
It's not the most enjoyable cowboy seasons for a variety of reasons.
Why has this offense, even with DAC, not performed to the level that I think people were
hoping, obviously with CD Lamb getting a big deal in DAC signing that long-term extension?
There's a couple different reasons.
Number one, they were ushering in two rookie starters on the offensive line.
Tyler got in at left tackle, Cooper Beebe,
at center. Gaiton's dealt with a lot of injuries. He's been up and down even when he's been
on the field. And then what hasn't helped is that your veterans on the offensive line,
Zach Martin and Terrence Steele have both regressed. And it's taken away their running game.
They have not been a very effective rushing team. They had their first 100-yard rusher last
week against the Giants Rico Doudal, the first time in over, I think it's two years. This is the
team that can't run the ball. And then when C.D. Lamb got a little bit banged up,
Brandon Cook has missed most of the year with an knee injury.
Jake Ferguson has missed a lot of time with a knee injury and a concussion.
They just haven't had all the pieces on offense,
and they are an offense that really needs to stay relatively healthy
in order to put up points.
And we've seen the last couple of years, like when they are healthy,
they can score in bunches.
They were the number one scoring offense last year.
But with so many guys missing time and with CD land missing all of training camp,
they've just been a little off all year.
And it's why they are in this situation that they're in.
But surely there's a great deal of hope this week for that Dallas offense,
with Cooper Rush getting the rematch with the Cincinnati Bengals,
a team that he beat a few years ago the last time these teams met
with Cincinnati's defense being the get right defense for so many teams this year.
I mean, yeah, if you watch the Bengals at all this year, you're right.
This has been a get right game for every opponent that's been on their schedule.
I just have my doubts with Cooper Rush, with a backup offensive line, with a banged up CD Lamb,
that they can score more than 24 points.
I think 27 is probably the limit on offense.
And we've seen over the last couple of games, like they can put together good drives,
but they really struggle in the red zone.
And if they aren't creating big plays down the field,
it's just really hard to sustain 12, 14 play drives against any defense in the league.
So you're right.
This should be a game.
The Cowboys offense has a good performance.
But whenever you have a backup quarterback on the field, you know there's a lot of randomness that happens.
And this happens, of course, last year with the Bengals as well.
It's just you can't rely on anything from week to week.
Brandon Cooks is the guy.
I think he's going to cook the second day.
I totally could see two big, big plays from him where he dials back the clock.
I think that's what's kind of maddening, I think, about this year for the Bengals is even with everything you said, and it's all makes sense from injuries to a backup quarterback, all of those things in the offensive line room for the Cowboys, it's like, yeah, still zero confidence that Lou's crew is going to find a way to slow down this Cowboys offense.
And one of the things that I want to see in this game is the Bengals love to play Nickel.
Like, nickel is their base defense, right?
the Cowboys over the last couple of weeks
have been using more two tight end sets,
sometimes even three tight end sets to get some bigger bodies on the field.
Do they try to run the ball against this Bengals defense,
which hates to be in base defense
and try to win the game that way?
Or do they see if they can spread them out
and get one-on-one matchups between C.D.
Lamb and Mike Heldon or maybe Brandon Cooks against Cam Taylor Britt.
I'm going to be very interested to see what style of offense
Mike McCarthy deployed in this one.
Yeah, if they go to 12.
personnel that will be interesting. The Bengals have struggled, as you point out, in base this year,
trying to figure out if they're trying to be more of a four three team or a five defensive linemen team.
And the last two weeks, they've started out with five defensive linemen in the first half.
And then they've gone to a four three in the second half, but putting three linebackers on the field with four defensive linens.
But without Logan Wilson, those linebackers are significantly worse for the Bengals, but we'll get there.
Well, and as I said, Jake, we saw last week early in the game against the Steelers, Russell Wilson just killed him on the little dump
off pass or the running backs over and over and over again.
Yeah.
And that's one thing that Cooper Rush does really well.
He gets rid of the ball quickly.
He can get it out accurately to running back tight ends.
Here it is.
If the Bengals want to play that kind of umbrella coverage and give Cooper Rush those
underneath passes, he'll take them all day.
Yeah.
2.0, baby.
Let's go.
Well, Jermaine Pratt, after the game against the Steelers was like, quick game.
Just quick game, quick game.
He said it 52 times.
but they couldn't get 52 tackles when needed.
Could Jermaine Pratt look any stiffer out there last week?
I mean, my gosh, he couldn't change direction or tackle and all.
The whole team looked like they were struggling to tackle in that one.
Marcus, speaking of defense and tackling,
let's quickly touch on the biggest story with that Dallas defense.
Is there something that we should know about?
Michael Parsons, obviously, the headliner.
What else is going on with that defense this year?
Well, I mean, we should start with Micah.
If the Cowboys are going to win this game,
it's going to be because of him.
And he's going to have plenty of matchups in this one that favor him,
whether they move him to the outside to go against Orlando Brown,
who was back last week,
but clearly isn't healthy.
His speed obviously is going to be a factor there.
Maybe they just line him up over Amerius Mims,
their rookie right tackle.
But one of the things the Cowboys have done lately is line Micah Parsons up as a defensive tackle
and try to get quick one-on-one wins to affect the quarterback.
And honestly,
matchup in this game, whether it's against Cody Ford or Alex Kappa.
Can you create quick pressure in Joe Burroughs face to make him get rid of the ball faster?
If the Cowboys can do that, I do think they have a decent chance of slowing down Cincinnati's
offense.
Yeah, that does sound like the magic formula for sure.
Let's dive into the Bengals side of things into their offense and, well, a defense that
I think you guys are going to know what that message is going to be.
We'll do that coming up next.

Welcome back to this crossover edition of the Lockdown Bengals and Lockdown Cowboys podcast.
Let's turn our attention to the Bengals side.
James, I want to start with you.
Just big picture outside of just the defense.
What went wrong with this Bengals team?
Because if you're a cowboy listener and you look at the box scores and you look at Joe
Burrow stats and you look at Jamar Chase's stats, it's like, how in the world is this
team like not in contention for the number one seat in the AFC?
Like what led to this season?
Yeah.
Well, what led to it?
Oh, that's a loaded question.
Right. Not having key guys like Jesse Bates, DJ Reader, letting those guys walk in free agency has certainly caught up to them.
That's an entire episode that we will do. How we got here, that's not pretty good. I want to be on that episode. That sounds fun.
Oh, it sounds like a nightmare. And it might be more than one episode. It might be like a five-part mini-series on how it happened.
Because you're right. When Joe Bro is playing at this level, the Bengals should be contending. And Monday night should mean, oh, well, are they?
going to overtake, insert whatever team you think would be there, the bills for the one seed,
are they going to clinch the division?
They should be in that discussion.
Those are the discussions we should be having.
And it's not that.
It's the opposite.
It's like, is it good for them to win on Sunday or on Monday?
Or should they lose because you don't want them to go three and two down the stretch or four and one
and just get a worst draft pick?
And ultimately, the common theme has been, when the game's on the last,
line, there's a mistake. And it's, it's been really, it's why they're one in seven and one score
games. And the defense is a huge part of that. It's not the only reason. There's turnovers.
There's game management issues. There's coaching decisions. There's a bunch of things that go into that.
And you really feel those mistakes when you're such a flawed team. And so it goes hand in hand.
But I think that's why the Bengals are where they are, four and eight, and really no shot at
making the playoffs.
Jake, I want to ask you about Joe Burrow because it makes me, oh, listen, I am a closet
of Bengals fan.
Let's just say that.
It makes me sick to watch somebody play at this high of level.
And then not to, they're going to be playing in basically no meaningful games in December,
which is hard.
Like, is this the best version of Burrow that you've seen so far?
It's the best he's played in the NFL.
He's having an MVP caliber season, both by traditional.
stats and by advanced stats and by the eye test. He's firmly atop the quarterback pecking order right now.
And I think like Lamar Jackson has an argument there as well, which I'm sure the Bengals audience of the show isn't loving me reminding them of.
But our mutual friend Joe Goodberry putting out a list of quarterbacks who met these thresholds this morning.
They had 12 plus starts in a season, 30 plus passing touchdowns, a 6.5% or better passing touchdown rate, less than a 1.5%
interception rate and seven and a half yards per attempt.
And there have been 12 other quarterbacks to ever do this.
And the Bengals have a bunch of these stats this year where you're like, oh yeah, all these
other teams that have done this are winning records and MVP's.
And of those 12 other quarterbacks that have ever done it, 10 won the MVP that year
for Offensive Player of the Year awards, a record of 157 and 31.
The only quarterback on the list is with a losing record.
that season is Joe Burrow, who's currently at 4 and 8.
Maybe it doesn't end up as a losing season.
Technically, that's so possible that they end up with a winning season,
but every other team on this list.
And most of these are 16 game seasons,
if not all of them being 16 game seasons.
The worst record is 11 and 5.
And you're talking about the Bengals being 4 and 8 right now.
And the pocket manipulation from Joe Burrow,
the playmaking that you've seen from him this year,
extending plays, hanging in there,
getting rid of the ball right before he takes hits,
and delivering accurate football.
is to open receivers, often in space, with immaculate ball placement that allows him to run after the catch, is he's been good before.
But I agree with Joe Burrow when he tells the announcing crew every week that he thinks he's playing the best football of his career, because I think he is.
It really feels like he's playing the best that he can given his skill set.
Like he's never going to be Josh Allen or Lamar as runners, right?
Like he's just, he's not built like those guys.
But as a, I don't even want to say just a pocket passer because it's not what he is.
but as a traditional dropback passer,
it's hard to envision anybody playing better than he is or better than that.
And yet they're four and eight.
So James, like just explain to the lot that cowboy listeners that haven't watched
just how bad has this defense been this year.
Oh, it's really the other way.
It's like, all right, well, who's been good?
And there's really one guy.
Trey.
That's been good.
Trey Hendrickson.
And I would say good.
A lot of people would probably say great and all.
It's Burrow, Chase, and Trey.
And I think it's hard to do this as a pass rusher on your own because you're getting so much more attention.
I get that.
But I think he's been good.
I don't think he's having a great season.
There are plenty of times where you don't necessarily see him wrecking the game like some of these other guys.
Like T.J. Watt last week wrecked the game.
And those are the type of plays that Bengals need from Trey.
It's also hard to expect those because no one else can get pressure.
And when you don't have other guys around him that can get pressure ever, why would you worry about those guys?
They're going to be in one-on-one situations until they prove that they can consistently get pressure.
And no one on this defense can't.
That's the bottom line.
That's what we've seen through 12 weeks.
There's no reason to think that Miles Murphy or Sam Hubbard or Chris Jenkins or Sheldon Rankins if he's healthy.
And I don't think he'll play this week.
We'll see, though, that's speculation.
I just know he's dealing with a serious illness.
It's tough because if you can't generate a consistent pass rush,
then your best guy can't impact things the way you would hope.
And the secondary hasn't been much better.
So it's all three levels too.
The linebackers, you mentioned Jermaine Pratt earlier in the episode.
I don't want to go too long on all three.
But Jake, I'm sure you agree.
It's all three levels.
None of them have been even good.
And when that's the case, you're looking at a bad defense.
Yeah, there's no complimentary football on that defensive side of the ball.
And usually talk about compliment.
There is.
It's bad complimentary.
Yeah, yeah, if you want to go that way.
And Jake, I was going to say, I mean, they've had injuries on defense.
It's not like they've been completely healthy, but it's not like they've been the most decimated unit on defense either.
And I think, again, please tell me if I'm wrong, but if you're a Bengal fan, I think that's what's the most discouraging thing here is that they've been relatively healthy on defense and they've been this bad.
it feels like some kind of big change needs to happen this offseason
to try to get them back to being at least a respectable unit on that side of the ball.
And some of its personnel stuff, some of its coaching stuff.
I mean, they're colossal failures in terms of player acquisition
and on the coaching staff this year, I think.
And some of that's like back in the off season when they signed shoulder
and rankings were like, okay, they're going to add another defensive tackle, right?
Like they're going to go get Callais Campbell or whatever.
And nah, not interested.
Then they go to the draft and draft McKinley Jackson in the third round,
which is a few rounds earlier than we expected them to draft a nose tackle in a class
where we talked to so many draft experts going into the draft last year,
and they're like, yeah, this is a bad defensive tackle class.
Not sure what to tell you there.
There's like Chavondre sweat, and that's kind of it.
And then they go that route with their second, third round pick.
So some of it's, you know, you can point to personnel.
You can point to them losing Dax Hill and DJ Turner,
who look like they're ascending at corner.
but yeah, I mean, there's really nothing that's gone right.
I will dissent a little bit from James on Trey Hendrickson.
I do think that because of what's around him,
I would still probably say I would consider it to be a great season for him,
especially as a pass rusher and this what we're accustomed to from Trey.
But that's just a minor disagreement between James and I probably
and doesn't go to the heart of the question that you asked.
Yeah, like, sorry, he hasn't made those games.
they haven't made on defense those game wrecking plays,
those turnovers,
that chaos.
And Trey can do that,
of course,
but what's around him certainly contributes to it.
Well,
and that's always been kind of the story of this Bengals defense.
They haven't been the shutdown defense,
but they've made timely plays when they needed to get off the field,
whether it's Logan Wilson making a play or Sam Hubbard,
who has basically been non-existent for most of this year.
They just haven't had those complimentary players step up
and it's why the Bengals are where the Bengals are.
Let's talk about some keys to victory for two teams that probably don't actually want to win on Monday night football.
We will get to that next.

Keys to Victory on crossover Thursday on the Locked On podcast network presented by Prize Fix
where you can play $5 and get $50 instantly with code locked on NFL.
Locked on Bengals and Locked on Cowboys here talking Monday night football and Marcus,
let's start with those Dallas Keys to Victory.
Cooper Rush, obviously, at the top of the list, right?
I mean, really focused on Cooper Rush here if you can't talk.
No, we could be.
I don't want to talk about Cooper Rush.
He's just a backup quarterback that kind of does the job of a backup quarterback.
What does-
Living referee in my mind, obviously.
Literally.
No, it's the defense in this one.
Douse isn't going to be able to stop Joe Burrow and Jamar Chase and Teagans.
Like, they're going to put up points.
But as we saw last week, the way to beat this Bengals offense is to create turnovers.
And we saw the Bengals give away the ball three times last week, two strip sacks,
one fumble that got tipped twice.
The Cowboys have the playmakers on defense to do it.
Michael Parsons can wreck this game.
Listen, there's no Steeler fan.
And so Michael, Michael Parsons is a better player than DJ Wat.
He can have a similar impact in this game, whether it's rushing inside,
rushing outside.
They've got Duran Blanback, who is one of their big time playmakers.
He's going to get beat.
He's not going to slow down Higgins and Chase.
But can he make a key play here or there to flip the game?
I think that's possible.
So for me, if the Cowboys want to win this game,
they're going to have to do it on the defensive side of the ball.
Yeah, it makes sense.
It's how you, Joe could still be great,
but if you're going to make things chaotic around him,
then you see it.
You can give up points and still live with it.
And so, well, would not shock me at all.
And I know, by the way, that that'll be probably the first thing
that Zach Taylor will mention when we ask him,
hey, what do you need to do this week?
It's like win the turnover battle.
It was last week, by the way, too.
He said the game's going to come down to turnovers,
and obviously it was a huge factor.
And one of the things that Mike Zimmer has done really well is the Cowboys,
since Michael Parsons has returned,
they've created pressure on 50% of their third down plays on their opposing quarterback.
So they are going to blitz the crap out of Joe Burrow.
Burrow is really good at beating the blitz,
but can you force him to get rid of the ball quicker,
throw into tight windows, get tip passes.
That's what you're going to have to be able to do.
want to stop this offense.
Zimmer's always been so great on third downs.
I mean, obviously, Bengals fans who have been around since before Joe Burrow, anyway,
back in the Zimmer days, know that Zimmer is a chef on third downs.
Yeah, he's been unbelievable.
All right, James, what do the Bengals need to do here on Monday night to win this game?
Well, first things first, you got to protect Joe.
And that one means if you protect him, then yeah, he should be able to do what he's done all season
along and you should be able to avoid the chaos that was three turnovers against the Steelers.
And the last thing you want to do is do that on the road.
The second thing would be turnovers.
Can this defense force a little chaos?
Can they Rick a little havoc?
And then third, don't let Cooper Rush dink and dunk.
Make him push it down the field a little bit, which is scary to say because it might still work.
But I would much rather that than a little dump off to Rico Dado that's going to go for a 15.
18 22 yards.
Luke Schoonmaker finishing with, you know, six catches for a buck 10 or something like that.
And two of them are tied-end screens.
Like I don't think anyone wants to see that.
So that's the key for every single week.
It's going to be protect Joe.
And then after that, it's going to be up to this defense.
Yeah, we can't let Jake's guy Cooper Rush take over this game, clearly.
Like, that's the last thing we want to see here.
You're going to be on the post game show with us.
If Cooper Rush goes off, Marcus.
Oh, Russell Wilson just threw for 414.
So, like, I'm not ruling anything yet.
But you talk about those, those dink and dunks, James, and the checkdown stuff.
If Dallas can just go quick game and the Bengals are like eight yards off again and not tackling because that's what they've done this year, they haven't tackled all year, then the matchup that you love if you're the Bengals defense, which, I mean, we've talked about this several times.
This is Trey Hendrickson against a potential third string.
You were saying, Marcus.
Yeah, Chia.
left tackle.
Yeah.
And Trey loves bad backup left tackles.
I mean, we've seen him this year even.
Fred Johnson gave him issues with, with, the game.
Yeah, I mean, there are some games you expected him to do a little bit more than he did,
but he's also eventually taking over games against bad tackles.
Was it the, Fred Johnson was with the Raiders.
Eagles.
Eagles, yeah.
No, the Raiders is when Trey Hendrickson racked up four.
Where sacks, it's why he's leading the NFL.
Yeah.
And against the Kansas City Chiefs back in week two, and their left tackle issues,
like he got a left tackle bench in that game.
He went crazy.
He, like, was the reason the defense almost won the Bengals the game.
So if you're looking for somebody on the defense to do it, that's Trey.
But Trey can't win in a second.
No, and a second and a half, you know, you can't let the ball come out,
can't be catching throw real quick.
The last thing I want to say here is when you have two bad teams,
motivation does matter.
And I think the Bengals actually did a pretty good job last week of competing against Pittsburgh.
Like they were in that game.
And you could see that they were fighting hard.
They just fell short.
The turnovers had a big deal with it.
But now that they're four and eight, have they come to the conclusion that the season really is over?
And do you see guys start to mail it in?
I think we saw this a little bit from the Cowboys as soon as the Dak Prescott injury happened.
To Mike McCarthy's credit, he's had them playing really hard the last couple weeks.
Can Zach Taylor have him?
his team do the same or are we now in like let's preserve our body mode and be ready for
2025 i'll be interested interested to see what the motivation and the energy level is from
both of these teams on monday yeah and zach has done a good job like even last year after
joe went down he kept everyone together and they were able to to win three straight at one point
in december can you continue that knowing like i think joe knows and it's just kind of
accepted it last week we heard from him after the game heard from him and his messages yeah the film
doesn't lie go out there and put good film out there it's like oh interesting so i i do think that
they'll respond but it'll be interesting to see if they actually go out there and do it yeah that'll
be one of the many storylines we're watching on the simpsons or regular broadcast you have choices
on monday night football this week bart versus homer i might go for the simpsons if if i can you know
That might add some spice to this game between teams with losing records.
But that's going to do it for this crossover here on the Lockdown Podcast Network.

We'll have more on Lockdown Cowboys and on Lockdown Bengals heading into this game on Monday night football.
