Calci trade what's next?
I'm Kevin Ostracker, Locked on Ravens.
joined with me is Joe Goodberry of Locked on Bengals.
And Joe, we have a heck of a matchup here in week number seven.
Now, it could look very different depending on who plays a quarterback for the Baltimore Ravens,
but we'll get into that in just a few minutes.
I want to start off with you in the Bengals' biggest story since he coming off of a biweek,
well rested.
Baltimore just finished an AFC North battle with the Cleveland Browns.
It didn't go in their favor.
How is Cincinnati feeling right now?
Feeling pretty good coming off of that Miami win, although it's the dolphins,
and they're probably picking top three.
You get the bi week to kind of figure some things out,
and they had some issues.
That game ended up being a seven-point game at the end.
Some people are kind of like, you know, you should beat the dolphins by 17.
And we reviewed the film and looked at some of the advanced data and EPA and stuff.
It was like, oh, yeah, the Bengals blew them out.
The game was just too close at the end.
But they're coming off the by week being pretty healthy.
Just one guy on the injury report from Wednesday's practice is Kyle Dugger,
who's coming back after missing the last couple of games with a quad bruise.
He was limited.
It sounds like he's on his way to be back this week.
So they're pretty clean there.
I know it looks very different in Baltimore.
I just saw the injury report and it's just two opposite ends of the spectrum right now,
which is going to be a big storyline for this game.
And Kevin, I don't know about you guys, but for me personally,
I think a lot of Bengals fans, we look at these Ravens matchups.
Like these are the matchups of the season.
And I know the Bengals have been down the last three years.
Burroughs had his injuries.
They haven't made the playoffs for three years.
But it hasn't felt like the Steelers without a franchise quarterback has been
that true rival. And it's really Lamar and Joe, it's a shame we haven't gotten these guys more often
because one guy is typically hurt half the time it feels like. But when they do play, it's been fireworks.
It's been such a blast. Yeah, these games are awesome. And the Ravens, I feel like feel the same way.
And I mean, I personally do feel like, you know, it's Ravens and Bengals at the top here. Yes,
I know Cleveland's currently leading the division. I don't really expect that to be a long term
situation, Joe. I feel like when we're sitting here and when maybe we talk.
again on New Year's Eve for that New Year's Eve matchup, it will probably be very big division
implications for sure. So look, these are two very explosive offenses. You know, Baltimore's
defense, I think, is playing really well right now since he improved their defense dramatically
in the offseason with the additions that they made. So, you know, it's not just this matter of like,
okay, can, you know, the defense to find the game. I mean, you can now have that both ways with both
Baltimore and Cincinnati. I mean, the Dexter Lawrence edition has been phenomenal so far
for the Bengals and some of the other editions as well.
You know, like Cassius Howell making an impact on the edge.
There are a lot of guys that we'll get a little bit more in the key.
I don't want to cheat too far into the second part of the show.
But for the Ravens, yes, you mentioned the injury report.
And Lamar Jackson first and foremost, you know,
I personally believe Baltimore really has no shot to win this game without Lamar Jackson,
especially with what we saw against the Browns with Tyler Huntley.
And, you know, Huntley was pretty terrible in that Browns game.
And you just can't rely on him to be.
be a guy that can go toe to toe with Joe Burrow and Jamar Chase and T. Higgins in that Bengals
offense. Now, Lamar Jackson, this was a whirlwind of a couple hours in Baltimore earlier
on Wednesday afternoon because initially the reports from the media were that
Omar wasn't there during the open portion of practice. And so everyone's all right. He's not
practicing again. Not great. Not great. But then when the media went back out kind of after
practice, Lamar was seen walking from the field into the field house. And,
And people like, oh, okay, well, he wasn't really dressed.
He was kind of in street clothes.
The reporters are saying he was walking with a limp.
I didn't see too big of limp in the videos that we put out there.
I think it was more just he was walking uphill.
But regardless, Jesse Minter then went to the podium and said that he did get a little bit of work in,
kind of was a limited, got some limited work in.
And then he comes out, Joe, that he is limited on the CVS receipt of an injury report that the Ravens had on Wednesday.
So that can mean a lot of different things, right?
Limited can mean a laundry list of different things when it comes to the actual participation
that he was able to do in practice.
Maybe he did very minimal.
Maybe he did a decent amount.
We don't know that information.
The Ravens are pretty tight to the vest with their injury report.
But clearly, Lamar being out there is important.
But at the same time, if he's not like at or at least near 100 percent feeling as good
as he can based off the circumstances, it was a pretty nasty ankle injury he suffered,
you know, maybe he's not able to move the way he wants to.
Maybe he's not able to throw the way or run the way he wants to.
And that puts both the Ravens and Lamar to disadvantage against, again,
a vastly improved Bengals front seven defensive line.
And, you know, I think to me, it's just about being smart with it where him playing in this
divisional matchup is so huge, but not at the expense of his long-term health.
If he goes out there, can't do what he does.
And then, you know, Dexter Lawrence bears down on him or someone else.
And, you know, there's a sack that happens and an unfortunate situation happens.
And he re-injures something or gets hurt even worse because he's not able to do
he does. So plenty of outcomes here, Joe, but obviously Lamar's status, the biggest storyline here
in Baltimore. No doubt. It's the biggest for the Ravens. It's the biggest storyline for the Bengals,
too, to be honest, in Cincinnati, is Lamar going to play? We let off our last show on
lockdown Bengals within our whole first segment was if Lamar plays, this is a game, right? And if he
doesn't, you feel so much better about this matchup. And honestly, I'd rather see both teams go at
at full strength. And it's because we've missed so much of each other's
quarterbacks for so long. Honestly, I feel for Baltimore because we've been in those shoes.
When you look at how much you miss your franchise quarterback, it's a terrible feeling.
No one wants to see it. No one wants to go through it. So we understand it completely,
if anyone does. But yeah, we're looking at this game like, do the Ravens push it?
Do they say, all right, Lamar, we need you now because they're hitting their hard stretch, right?
This is their, they're coming up where they're, you got to win, hopefully two out of three
of these if you drop three, if you drop, you know, two out of three,
it's Ravens could be in a hole after this. And the Bengals are hitting their easier part of the
schedule now. And they're hoping to win this game and then go on a run and build some distance
in the AFC North. And I'm sure that's the way they're looking. And I'm sure they are preparing
as if Lamar is going to play. When Zach Taylor talked about it today, they're like, oh, yeah,
we're going to, we're going to practice as if Lamar's going to play. And if he doesn't,
the offense doesn't change that much with Huntley because it's still a guy that can move.
and run around the Bengals, number one, run stop rate for stuffing runs in the league this year.
They are also letting up the most explosive runs in the league.
And a lot of them are coming from the quarterback position.
They've really struggled to contain quarterbacks this year and hold them to, you know,
if they're going to scramble a five to eight yards scramble,
they're going for 15 to 20 plus.
And so they've got to clamp down on that.
And if Lamar can't move, maybe that's helpful.
Either way, that is a big thing that I think the Bengals were focusing on during their byweek
is rushing with contain in mind and not letting these quarterbacks get outside the pocket.
Yeah, one of the biggest things with Tyler Huntley in is that the Ravens just can't push the ball down the field effectively.
I mean, there was a stat from the game against the Titans when Lamar initially got injured from Jonas Schaefer,
the Baltimore banner over here.
You know, Lamar averaged, like I have to find the exact stat because it was that wild.
But essentially, you know, the Ravens were able to push the ball down the field that such an incredible rate.
I thought I saw it today.
he had the highest average depth of target, right?
Yeah, and that's something he always is like top five, top three top in the league in that.
But the stat itself from the Titans game was Lamar, at the time of this, this was October, you know, early October.
He was averaging 10.2 air yards per throw.
That was one of the NFL's highest rates.
Tyler Huntley, after replacing him against the Titans in week four, averaged four air inches per throw.
Oh, four air.
Or air.
It's literally four.
But it's not something that the race.
Ravens do a lot is pushed a ball down the field with Tyler Huntley because he just,
he doesn't have that in his game.
You know, Kevin McCusick, who, you know, film study Ravens over here in Baltimore as well,
put out that like with Zay Flowers back quarterback, Lamar Jackson, 19 target, 17 receptions,
3003 yards, which is 18.6 yards per target.
With Tyler Huntley is 23 targets, 15 receptions, 118 yards, which is 5.1 yards per target.
So, you know, you're not able to utilize your receivers the way that you want to
when Lamar is not out there because your backup quarterback just kidding.
not push the ball down the field. So lots of stuff to get into here in terms of key matchups as well.
I'm really excited to talk about this because I think on both sides of the ball for both teams,
there was plenty to dive into. So I should have stayed too. We got plenty coming away here on this
crossover Thursday edition of Locked on Ravens and Locked on Bengals. First, the shell was brought to you

Moving along, locked on Ravens, locked on Bengals.
Kevin Ostriker, Joe Goodberry, still here with you talking about a key week seven matchup
between Baltimore and Cincinnati.
Now, Joe, I think, again, as I mentioned at the end of the first part of the show,
very much a lot of key storylines that we can talk about.
But the key matchup is something that really intrigued me here.
So I want to start with you.
Where's one area?
Maybe it can be player versus player position versus position they are looking at for this game.
So for Bengals fans, it's our first time seeing Trey Hendrickson back up close, right?
That was a guy who's been maybe their best edge rusher in franchise history in his five years there, right?
Maybe the best signing they ever had in free agency in their franchise history as well.
he was instrumental to a lot of their success in getting to Super Bowl and the
FACC championship and back to back years.
We liked Trey a lot when he was there, but he kind of left on bad terms and he goes
to Baltimore.
And that's never where you want to see some of your best players go in free agency, right?
He's to go to a division rival.
And he did.
So it's our first time to get to see him up close.
And he's going to go largely against Orlando Brown Jr.
at left tackle.
Trey normally rushes from that right side, right?
And the Bengals have realized that Marius Mims at right tackle is a stud.
He is everything you would want for a first round pick and more.
He's his island rate is second best in the league and his past block efficiency at right tackle is the best in the league.
So they are leaving him on his own over there and he is awesome.
Orlando Brown though, someone you guys know as well, right?
So he he's not the quickest guy.
And he's lost a little bit of strength in my opinion with the new footwork and stance he has.
And Trey likes to go to that bull rush if he can.
And if not, he's going to rip and speed around the outside edge.
The Bengals have been giving Orlando Brown a ton of help since about week two.
That was the Texans game.
The Texans just teed off on OBJ on the left side there.
And it made it really hard in the Bengals' offense.
And they're like, okay, enough of this.
Mims is a stud.
We don't have to send help that way anymore.
Let's send it all to Orlando Brown.
So let's see how the Bengals handled that.
Handled Trey Hendrickson, seeing him up close.
I feel like advantages Trey there completely.
But I don't know how many times the Bengals are going to give him that opportunity.
Yeah, that's going to be a big one too.
I mean, clearly there's going to be a lot of.
emotional, there's going to be a lot of emotion that goes into that game with
Trey, as you mentioned. And, you know, Trey's been really good. Like, the stats aren't going to
jump off the page to you, but he has been, I think, he's been a very nice addition to this
Ravens team in terms of pressure rate, you know, getting to, he had a sack against the
Sean Watson on Sunday against the Browns. I mean, look, he's missed the time with the finger
injury. He hasn't really gotten a chance to play a ton this season for Baltimore. But, you know,
the motivation factor will certainly be there.
And, you know, it's kind of like what I said last week when the Ravens played the Browns and Todd Munkin.
You know, I'm sure all those Browns players wanted to win for Todd.
You know, I'm sure on the other side, a lot of the Ravens players are going to want to win this one for Tray and kind of have his back in the whole nine yards there.
But, you know, one matchup I'm really looking forward to.
And this is something we talked about a little bit before we recorded.
Joe T. Higgins has not played in a lot of these Ravens Bengals matchups.
And so, you know, you have obviously Jamar Chase.
who I think if Jamar Chase had a choice,
he'd play the Ravens 17 times a year because he just,
the stats are ridiculous when he plays the Ravens.
Induct him in the whole family day.
He retires, if that's the case.
They probably induct him halfway through his career,
if that were what was going on.
But largely T. Higgins has not played the Ravens.
And he missed both games last year.
This is an interesting one because, you know,
T is a very talented.
I mean, the Bengals have two number one receivers on their roster.
Both Jamara and T are number one.
receivers. In Baltimore's secondary, you have Nate Wiggins, who obviously is your top guy,
Marlon Humphrey, who I'm probably going to see more in the slot than anything. You know,
they like to put different guys there as well. Kyle Hamilton plays in the slot as kind of a big
nickel. You know, Chaudo Wuzier, you have him, you know, you're seeing Keon Martin a lot in
the slot as well for Baltimore. There's a rotation, but the Bengals receivers versus the Ravens
secondary is going to be one of my key matchups here, especially because, you know,
It's not just about Jamar and T, but obviously, you know, you got to wonder about how Mike Kisiki's going to impact things from the tight end spot.
You have a couple of other receivers.
I think is Colby Young going to play in this one, Joe?
Sounds like it.
He'll be available.
Dante Myers is another guy that's intriguing to me.
Is there a front runner in that wide receiver three room?
Is it Yosufash?
Like, what's kind of going on there?
So Yoshi's on I right now.
He needs another week before, or at least a week.
He hurt his thumb.
So I don't know if we're going to be the guy if he was healthy.
He would.
but he was already starting to lose some reps to Dante Myers, who was a CFL player that Bengals picked up.
I want to say it was in February last year.
It was an awesome story throughout camping in the summer.
And he's a jitterbug type slot guy who you can give some yak plays to, even get him some jet sweeps and stuff.
Really good acceleration.
He's a fun player to have in that slot.
But they like to get Jamar on the slot a lot.
So when they do, though, that's where Kobe Young and Andre was playing.
And Andre was special playing on the outside there.
So it's really dependent on what they want to do with Charmard Chase.
But I will say this.
The guy who's been really key as the number three this year has been Mike Keseki.
And he is not a tight end, right?
He's just a big receiver.
He's a bigger, slower receiver.
But still, teams treat him at times.
I think he's like 93% either in the slot or out wide.
So when I say wide receiver, like strictly, he's out there.
Teams will sometimes treat him like a tight end and put a linebacker or a safety out there.
And the Bengals really feel like that's a big advantage.
There's been plenty of games or it's just one.
for Gaseki, but it's a touchdown.
And it's a key red zone play.
And there's even been plays or drives where they will go to Gaseki because he's
the forgotten man and you're so much attention going to T and Jemar.
But then when the other teams have treated him like he's a receiver,
and I think that's where he struggles more.
And the Bengals are like, okay, you want to use him as a receiver?
We'll start running the ball a little bit more.
So they kind of dictate their offense around how teams want to treat Mike.
It's like it's very interesting to watch on tape.
But you brought up T.
I just want to, for the Ravens fans who don't know,
T has not played in Baltimore since 2021.
The Bengals haven't had a day game.
It's been all night, prime time Thursday night games in Baltimore.
They haven't had a day game in Baltimore since 2021.
Remember Jemar Jace's rookie catches that slant, spins out of it, goes 70 yards.
That was the last time.
If you feel like an old man, listen to this, it's been a long time since we've been in Baltimore and the sun's been out.
Man, yeah, I see, I try to just block that play out from my mind because it's just so
scarring to me, but it is crazy.
We have plenty of scarring plays as well to share.
Lamar Jackson put a Nick Vigil in a blender as he goes and spins off him.
We could do a whole fourth segment about just terrible moments for both these teams in this
matchup.
But I mean, look, it's really exciting because again, like if Lamar does play, and again,
we don't know at the time we're recording this, but like it's two very high powered offenses.
And, you know, for some reason, it's funny because you talk about like linebackers getting
matched up on on Gizicki.
The Ravens are moving Zayflowers around a lot.
more this year. They're putting him in the slot a lot more this year. And teams will put linebackers
on him. And like, every time I'm like, why would you do this? Like it is not even like, you know,
the fast athletic guys who you think can maybe keep up. It's like very slow veterans. And I'm like,
you know, Jose, catch and run for 50 yards. And I'm like, yeah, well, what's going to happen when
you put a lineback around Zay flowers? I saw Zay is leading the league and average separation. And that's
probably why, right? They're moving them around a lot, putting them in the slot. And yeah, if they're
going to play zone and he's getting a linebacker of safety he's eating that up yeah 100% there actually
was one graph that i saw where someone did some it might have been separation but it was a certain
metric i can't remember what it was and they had the graph and then in the replies the guy was like
i couldn't put zay flowers on this graph because he broke it like it was so far to the right
and you know right right top corner and then the graph is like everybody all the logos are super
small and you just see a small purple logo and it's zay all the way in the right right and you're just like
man he's having an awesome year he's been there passing offense for really the past year plus now and
you're getting some contributions from rashad bateman you know others as well they're starting
to get some contributions from the younger tight ends matt hibner and josh quavis mark
andrews has been honestly a negative for the ravens this year especially in that i was going
to ask if they've missed Isaiah likely they they definitely have and you know there are a lot of
rumors about what actually happened whether the ravens offered likely contracts he didn't like
them and then they ended up giving the deal to Andrews and whatnot. But I mean, they definitely
miss what he brings to the table. And I mean, it's no surprise to anyone here in Baltimore that
he's doing what he's doing in New York right now. A lot of people thought he was the success
to Andrews to be in Baltimore for, you know, 10 years like Andrews. And, you know, Andrews is nearly
at that 10 year mark now. But Andrews just isn't the player he was three years ago or four years
ago, suffered the injury. And clearly the Buffalo game was a pretty low moment for him overall. And,
you know, it's, it's a lot more just about his role being a possession guy now.
You're not going to get a lot of the yards after the catch.
You know, Lamar and Mark still have a great connection, but, you know, he's fumbling
footballs and dropping passes.
You almost dropped the pass into an interception the other day.
So, you know, just a string of bad luck for Mark, who's been such a great raven for so many
years.
It's just, you know, he's a ring of honor player eventually, right?
Yeah, but it's just a matter of how the last this, you know, Joe, you know, well,
this is a what have you done for me lately league?
And, you know, lately it hasn't been.
great for Mark Andrews.
But we have to talk about some keys to victory because there are a lot of them for both
of these teams.
And they could be defining on whether the Ravens or Bengals come out with a win or a loss.
So State 2, we got plenty coming up on Locked on Ravens and Locked on Bengals.

Well, the major one to me is I really like what Declan Doyle is doing
on offense for the Ravens.
It's a lot of misdirection.
There's a lot of layers and tricks in there that I don't think a lot of offenses are using.
Just, you know, it went around the NFL circles last week, putting the tight end and pretty much the guard spot.
You know, he's off the line and he, the Browns don't even pick him up.
There are things littered like that.
I think you think the first touchdown is a great design, right, in getting to him wide open from what it looks like he should be flaring out to the flat.
Instead, he cuts it back.
No one picks him up because he's not supposed to go there.
Little layers like that.
The Bengals have two young lines.
linebackers that have struggled with communication.
And they're better than they were last year.
If you're a Bengals fan listening to this,
the Bengals linebackers,
Demetrius Knight, Barrett Carter, and year two,
they are better.
They are still having major communication issues
and it extends to the safety position.
Now, the Bengals have had injuries at safety this year.
They get Brian Cook back fully.
Even Zach Taylor stopped short of saying he's at 100%.
That's their captain back there that should help their communication.
But they're going to,
the Ravens are going to put them to the test
and make sure they're clean and clear on who they have,
because they're going to have to pass these things off.
There's going to be a lot of man beaters,
a lot of misdirection.
And I think the, I can't, I don't, I don't want to say,
I think they're going to be able to handle it.
I can't wait to see if they can handle.
I think this is going to be their toughest test for that young linebacker duo.
I'm really excited for that, you know,
I feel like, you know, with all the additions the Bengals made.
And look, I gave the Bengals a lot over the years for not improving the defense
the way that they needed to.
I give them all the credit in the world for growing up.
out there being aggressive with it, not just with the Dexter Lawrence trade, which was the big
splashy move, but a lot of underrated moves.
Boy, my thing was great.
Yeah, that one, the Cook one itself, I mean, lots of moves along the margins as well,
outside of that.
So, you know, the Ravens offense versus the Bengals defense is one that I'm really looking
forward to.
You know, I also, Joe, look to me because the Bengals run offense in terms of yards
per attempt.
I mean, there are bottom six run offense with just 3.6 yards per
carry this year. You know, the Ravens rushing defense this year is a top 10 unit. But I think to me,
a key is just, you know, making the Bengals one dimensional. And look, if you also have to worry about
Chase Brown in this while also having Joe Burrow, T. Agan, Jamar Chase, it's going to be not fun for
you. I think you have to eliminate the threat of the ground game first. So that you can pin your ears back
and try to get to Joe Burrow, get them on the ground, get that pressure. Because it,
if you have to worry about that and, you know,
the most effective way to use play action is if your run game is effective first.
And so if the Bengals are able to utilize their ground game with Chase Brown and, you know,
maybe some Lajip Ryan gets involved.
And I know he's more of a receiving guy for them.
But, you know, regardless, you can make a lot of problems with the Baltimore defense for the Bengals' offense.
And even if the ground game doesn't work that passing offense is still so lethal.
But regardless, you don't want to make it even more lethal by also having a lethal ground game.
You got to stop the ground first.
And I think the Bengals want to.
get Chase Brown going. In the Miami game, he had a fumble and they were starting to give more snaps to
P. Rhine, uh, because Pryne was just hitting the hole quicker and, and at the right timing. It's not
always faster. Sometimes it's letting the, the lineman climb to the second level and get to those
linebackers at the right timing. And P. Ryan looked smooth. He looked good. Chase Brown has struggled so
far this season, but he struggled last season. In the second half of the year, he was dynamite.
And I think the Bengals would like to get him going again and get back to that because it just rounds out their
offense so much. But if I can add one here, if Cam Juergens is playing, if it's Vega
Juane, whoever it is at center, Dexter Lawrence has, we've said it a couple times, it's been a great
trade. He has been everything that you could have hoped for as a Bengals fan. And there hasn't
been a center that could stand up to him yet. So I'm interested to see how that goes for Baltimore.
If we can see Cam Jurgens, he's not the biggest center either. So I think Dexter Lawrence
could have that huge size advantage there. They know each other pretty well, right? Giants and
Eagles, they've gone ahead to head. And I think.
feel like Dexter has had his number quite a few times when they've played.
So that is a big matchup.
What can the Ravens do interior on the offensive line to slow down?
And it's not just Dexter Lawrence.
The Bengals also Jonathan Allen was a good signing.
He's got three sacks already.
He's winning at a high rate.
Their last year's starters, BJ Hill, T.J. Slate.
And they just didn't cut those guys.
They said, hey, you're now the backup.
So they rotate four to five guys on there that they feel really good about.
And that's a strength of the Bengals defensive as a hold now.
Yeah, what a test for a new look.
Ravens Interior.
You get Dexter Lawrence one week,
get to go to Buffalo and play Dion Walker the next week.
And after we saw the film on former Ravens Center,
Tyre Lindemamom I'm out there in Vegas and how Dion Walker practically manhandled him.
Big test upcoming for this Ravens Interior.
So look,
I think this is going to be a great matchup.
There are a lot of different ways that both these teams can win.
But of course,
all eyes will continue to be on Lamar Jackson and his availability for this week.
Because obviously I think that shapes how this game goes.
in a very big way.
