James today, well, Aaron Rogers has finally let the Steelers know his decision.
He will be joining the Pittsburgh Steelers playing quarterback.
We're playing the Cincinnati Bengals on Thursday night in Cincinnati in prime time this year.
When I say that this move doesn't really move the needle for me, I think it's like a big picture
thing.
He is clearly better than Mason Rudolph, even at this point in his career.
I don't think there's any ifs or butts or debates about that.
But we're going to go through the different teams here in the AFC North.
And this goes back again to a question that we were considering a while ago, which is,
did the Bengals get better?
Yes or no.
Here's how.
Do the rest of the AFC North do enough to move the needle for their respect to?
teams.
The AFC North largely the same division, but this comes on the heels of this significant
news that Aaron Rogers has finally relieved the suspense for the Pittsburgh Steelers and
will join the team for mandatory minicap.
Yeah, we thought, at least I thought that this was going to happen.
We didn't really talk much about it because you're right.
From a needle moving standpoint, he's at best.
If he plays well, going to be the third best quarterback in this division, at best.
Like, that's the ceiling for Aaron Rogers.
And that's it.
So there we go.
We'll throw water on it there.
Even if he dials it back and plays like 37-year-old Aaron Rogers, which is unrealistic,
and is super normal and not weird and not a distraction.
He's not better than Joe Burrow in 2025.
And he's certainly not better than Lamar Jackson in 2025.
So you have the third best quarterback in the division.
But it does cement that the Steelers are.
They're going to be relevant.
They're going to be talked about in the north.
And they always are and they're always tough.
They have a really good defensive line.
And much like the Browns, they're always a tough matchup for the Bengals because they're
just super physical and they can get after Joe and they can hit Joe.
And so when I thought about the idea of Aaron Rogers in Pittsburgh knowing about the clunk heads
that Mike Tomlin has dealt with.
And you think about it, like Antonio Brown was pretty tame.
for most of his Steelers tenure until the end
and then he went off the rails
and Mike Tomlin said,
all right, get him out of here.
Tomlin is good at building a culture
and having a certain standard
and all the things that Aaron Rogers
didn't have with the Jets.
And so do I think that the Steelers can be
really, really, really annoying,
more annoying than they were even last year
with Russell Wilson?
I do because you look at Aaron Rogers's numbers
and I know it didn't look this way.
last year it didn't because there were times he really looked old but he still completed 63%
of his passes for 3,900 yards 28 touchdowns 11 picks I think back to when the Bengals beat
the Steelers and Joe Burrow and the entire Bengals team thinking of the help they needed
praises Aaron Rogers says how he looked up to him and still thinks he's really good player
all of those things.
And Rogers got the job done against the Dolphins that next day.
And they didn't get the help they needed from Kansas City, but got the help the other way.
So I think that element, or they, yeah, they didn't get, they needed Kansas City to lose.
Point is, is Aaron Rogers can still play at a pretty decent level, better than Mason Rudolph.
Will he make them a train wreck?
I think that's how this goes weird.
If Aaron Rogers acts like Jess Rogers and doesn't make himself part of the Steelers culture, I think this can go off the rails.
But if he's just a quarterback playing quarterback, I don't necessarily love it for the Bengals.
And I know a lot of Bengals fans are, but they have a culture there in Pittsburgh.
And I'm not sure he's going to go there and just completely crush what they have.
And there is still a solid team in Pittsburgh.
They trade out one headache for a similar point.
player, but much less of a headache in DK Metcalf and get rid of George Pickens. So that's your
wide receiver one for Aaron Rogers. They'll probably bring in one of Aaron Rogers old buddies
and wide receiver at some point here. We'll see if that happens. But besides Metcalf,
Robert Woods in that wide receiver room, a veteran who knows how to play the game. Pat Friarmouth,
a solid tight end, a decent run game with the rookie edition of Caleb Johnson, who the Steelers
invest a draft pick in. Jalen Warren still around there.
like you can see how the offense comes together.
Is it a significantly better offense?
I think it's kind of hard to make the argument that it's significantly better.
Is it better than it would have been with Mason Rudolph?
Yes.
Is that leaving the Steelers in a place where they will be an annoyance,
a thorn in the side of the division?
Yes.
Will the Steelers be able to take games off the Ravens with the Bengals?
It could happen.
I think they're good enough to take a game off of those teams that the teams that I still think
are the better teams in the division.
But does Aaron Rogers make the Steelers a championship contender?
Maybe in a very, very slim part of that scenario.
Like the best, best, best case scenario,
he runs back his late career MVP form.
You know, you saw a few years ago before the Achilles and all those things.
Because he did have that one season where he kind of like he was kind of petering off.
his career was looking like he's on the down swing and then he had that one season.
So like he could recapture that, but at 42, on a team that isn't star-studded on offense,
I think it'll be tough.
Now, the Steelers did get a little bit better on defense, I think.
They spend their first round pick on Derek Harmon.
Darius Lay should add some stability.
Even though I know he's old, he should add some stability to that cornerback room where that was a liability.
for this team the defense the front five in general still going to give the bengals a ton of issues
and they add derrick harmon to that group they're good that matchup is not not good like that that's
still going to be scary this year but the the big part of this the erin rogers part of this
are the sealers real contenders i still don't buy it all i know is is lucas patrick was brought
to town to shut down that
interior for the Pittsburgh Steelers shut down, blocked, clamped.
All right, I'll stop.
Keanu Benton is like, like, I know the Bengals hold him in really high regard.
They're like, oh, man, that dude.
And that's not even a guy that people talk about.
It's the best player on the Steelers defensive front.
Like to give you an eye, is he?
Yeah, well, obviously Cam and TJ.
It's tough, man.
I mean, they're, and I guess Harmon maybe isn't as good as Benton as a rookie,
But like, he really liked Harmon.
No doubt.
Oh, well, yeah.
I mean, that's the pick in a lot of scenarios, I think.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Anyways, it, uh, and not for the Bengals.
By the way, the Bengals were not picking Derek Carmen in the first round.
That was not a thing.
But, um, just pre-draft analysis, you thought maybe they would.
Uh, and we thought that maybe they would.
They're going to be a pain to deal with.
And if they get good Aaron Rogers, it's going to suck.
They might not.
They might get annoying.
I take baths and weird ponds and cover myself in mud, Aaron Roger.
And if they get that, then Pittsburgh's going to kick him out of there anyway.
But if they get a guy who's dialed in on football, which if you're Aaron Rogers and you don't want to end up like last year and your career like last year.
And I wouldn't either.
This is about as good of a place as you could ask for because the infrastructure is there.
You just got to go there and throw footballs.
What more could you ask for at 41?
So we'll see.
I still don't have them and I still wouldn't.
pick them ahead of the Bengals in this division.
And I think that's the end of it because I think Burrow gives the edge.
I think Chase, I think all these guys.
I think that they are still better than the Steelers.
But man, are the Steelers scary?
And did they, they're rolling the dice here on Aaron Rogers.
But if it works, Aaron Rogers doesn't need to be a Pro Bowl or there for it to work.
And, yeah, Super Bowl contender, throw that out.
But can it be thrown in the side and win 10 games in the north?
Steelers can do that, and that sucks because that means life's going to be a bit harder for Cincinnati.
That is the bottom line there.
We'll see if we have to deal with Aaron Rogers, Pat McAfee's show appearances, or if that's something that Tomlin can rain in.
But let's talk about the current AFC North champions of Baltimore Ravens, are they poised to remain the biggest threat to the Cincinnati Bengals?
Pretty obvious answer there.
We'll discuss coming up next.
Today's show is brought to you by Monarch Money.
Have you ever checked your bank account and wondered, where did all my money go?
Between dining out, online shopping, entertainment, maybe traveling to, we'll take mud baths or whatever it is that Aaron Rogers is doing.
Well, he's got plenty of money.
I'm not sure what his contract's going to look like.
But what Monarch Money is going to help you do is when life gets busy.
And life is going to be really, really busy next week because we have mandatory mini camp.

Let's talk Baltimore Ravens, James.
The team that was seen by many as the favorite going into the playoffs last year
largely runs it back.
They're seen by PFF, by the way,
as having the second best roster in the NFL behind only the Philadelphia Eagles,
the reigning Super Bowl champions.
And there aren't a whole lot of differences on this roster.
They're going to have a new starting left guard as Patrick Bikari.
is no longer with the Baltimore Ravens. Malachi Starks is going to start at safety as they're
dealing with an injury there anyway, which thrust them straight into the starting lineup.
Chidoby at Wuzier joins the cornerback room in Baltimore, but largely the same team.
That was really good. You still got Ronnie Stanley. You still got Tyler Linderbaum.
Still got Roger Rosengarten a hit for the Ravens at right tackle. You still have an offense that's
led, of course, by Lamar Jackson, who makes playing defense a nightmare for every single
team of the NFL, joined by Derek Henry in a run game that is by far the best in the NFL.
DeAndre Hopkins, Rashob Bateman, Zay Flowers, rounds out of wide receiver room that also
features Mark Andrews and Isaiah likely a tight end.
I can understand why the Ravens are still seen as the second best roster in the NFL, but
this will be the third straight year
the Ravens win the AFC North
that the Ravens won the AFC North in 2025
would it not?
It would and that's never happened
and so that's what they're trying to do.
They're trying to do with the Bengals
tried to do in 20203.
Injuries got in the way of that,
slow start got in the way of that.
And so yeah, you would say that history
and by the way,
the Steelers probably clinching onto this too
and holding onto this,
history says that the Ravens are going to take a step back.
but you look at that roster.
Yeah.
And it's like, oh, yeah, Mark Andrews, really, really good.
I get the ball was behind him and he dropped it in the playoff game.
But still, really, really good.
And Isaiah Likley, really good.
Zay Flowers, awesome.
They extend Rashad Bateman.
Is D'Hondrea Hopkins a reliable three at wide receiver when you have those tight ends
and you're not a pass-first offense?
You're fine with that.
I think it's just really tough.
And you know,
I was thinking about this.
I was talking about this with a friend the other day
because you look at this defense.
And I think this is a big reason why they're number two on PFF's list.
And they just steal Kyle Hamilton in the draft,
who is PFF's number one safety.
And so they go from Ed Reed and there's a little gap,
but then to Kyle Hamilton.
And then,
Before that, I believe it was right before that.
The bears, the idiots, the Chicago Bears, and that's exactly what they are.
They give away Roquant Smith.
So they go from Ray Lewis to Roquant Smith.
And so those are the two anchors of their defense as they have all these other pieces moving.
And obviously, Matabeeke is a huge part of their pass rush on the interior.
They have other guys.
I'm not saying that.
But, man, you go from Ed Reed and Ray Lewis to a few years.
years pass and it's those two guys and i know the bengals quick story one i know the bengals hold kyle hamilton
in really high regard i think in an ideal world they'll use dachshill in similar ways even though he's a
corner and not a safety uh or they've at least wondered why that wasn't the case in the past two
and this one's maybe more interesting the first time jemar chase played roquan smith as a member of the
ravens he was like who who's number zero and maybe i told this on the
the pod, maybe I haven't.
He's like, that dude was everywhere.
Those are the type of difference makers that matter.
And so for them to steal Hamilton in the draft and then trade for Roquan Smith and get him just because the idiots in Chicago didn't know how to manage their roster.
That's a heck of a one-two on defense to start.
I would say that Roquan Smith's performance is one of the biggest X factors for the Ravens on defense this year because he wasn't as good last year.
and he was great for them in his first year.
He was a nightmare for the Bengals to deal with when they had to go against the Ravens twice that season.
And they didn't have good answers for him.
And he was everywhere, to Jamar Chase's point.
He wasn't asking that question wrongly.
Roquan Smith was seemingly involved in every single play and at the football in every single play.
But I do still think there are questions facing the Ravens on defense.
They're strong in the secondary.
Marlon Humphrey and Nate Wiggins, Kyle Hamilton, and Malachi-Starks is a really
formidable way to start your secondary.
Genobey Uwuzier being your third corner, I think that's even if he's taken a step back,
which it looks like he maybe has now two years removed from that ACL injury.
You could certainly do worse at your third cornerback spot.
I do wonder how much they'll be able to continue to manufacture pass rush,
something that they've been really good at, but Adafay O'A and Kyle Van Noy being your eddruschers,
neither of those guys at the top of the league.
Matabike, really good player, not quite as disruptive last year.
Travis Jones, really good player, nose tackle.
So a lot of the Ravens, in terms of pressure production, does come from scheming it up,
and they do a great job of that.
But every time I see this matchup, I wonder, well,
Ravens be able to actually get pressure to Joe Burrow.
And Joe Burrow was really good against the Ravens last year.
He got got by Marlon Humphran to play, the strength of that defense, still the secondary.
I still think these will be really fun games.
I still think these will be tough matchups.
I still don't think the Bengals have a good answer for Lamar Jackson or for Derek Henry.
We'll see if any of their players in terms of development up front in terms of new rookie
linebacker additions can help with the speed and power.
and variety that the Ravens threaten you with in the running game,
I do worry still about the Bengals defense significantly playing against the Ravens' offense.
But I still, when I think about what I expect from these games,
and there's a long way to go.
But preseason, what I expect from the Bengals Ravens games this year is pretty similar to last year.
I think the offense is on both sides will be able to get theirs.
Yeah, I think it's fair.
I'm certainly not ruling the Bengals out by any stretch.
And it goes back to, I want to this conversation on our next show about roster ranking and everything.
But when you have Joe, Jamar, you have those guys, you're going to be able to go to toe to toe to with any of these teams, any team in the league.
And we see that with the Ravens.
But they're going to be tough.
They've stayed healthy.
And I think that's it.
They've stayed healthy.
And by healthy, I mean Lamar.
Lamar's healthy.
It's kind of like Joe.
It's a similar conversation.
You're going to have your shot.
You're going to be in every game.
And you're certainly going to have a chance.
So we'll see.
I think they're the favorites in the North for a reason.
I think they should be.
But there's also a reason why no team has done at three straight years.
And does that mean that it'll be the Bengals?
I don't know.
I think they have a good shot.
But you're going to have to get it done.
And it would help if you're right.
Roquan Smith continues to take a step back.
I still hold him in really, really high regard.
But yeah, he takes a step back.
maybe Kyle Hamilton slows down just a peg this year.
Lamar Jackson says,
I don't need to train as much this off.
No, all those things are going to happen because they should be hungry
because they lost a big game and they've come up short in the playoffs each and every year.
And so they're hoping that this is their year.
Meanwhile, the rest of the North needs to make sure that they don't make history and win it for a third straight year.
I do think Roquan Smith still had probably his best game of the year against the Bengals
in one of the few games.
for what I recall.
Torments them.
But he wasn't as noticeable in the other game, I think.
I don't know, man.
The most interesting thing about the Ravens thing to me is this AFC North three
year in a row thing.
Yeah, for sure.
Now, if any team would do it, I think it would be the Ravens.
But there are reasons that that's hard to topple that particular mark.
And a lot of it is attrition.
A lot of it is staying healthy.
And so that's what got in the way for the Bengals.
That's what's gotten in the way for,
teams in the past, but it's not going to be the biggest problem facing the Browns in
2025. We'll spend a little bit of time here talking about the projected seller dwellers in the
AFC North coming up next. All right. Let's talk about the Browns. You mentioned it. They're projected
to be fourth in the division. They'll certainly have the fourth best quarterback in the division,
regardless of how that shakes out, and whether it's Joe Flacco, Shador Danders. It's not going to be
Dylan Gabriel. I'll break the news right now. But, yeah, yeah.
Yeah, zero chance.
I can't believe they used a third round pick on him.
Or can he pick it?
Like literally any of those guys have a better chance than Deli Gabriel, who might be my height.
But whatever, he's on the roster.
He's getting that third round pick money.
He signed his deal earlier this week.
Congrats to him.
They're going to be a pain for the Bengals, Jake, because of the defensive front.
They keep Miles Garrett.
It looked like he was out.
Instead, they paid him a ton.
He didn't show up to the offseason program.
That was a thing in Cleveland.
But overall, this is a team that Bengals.
one should finish ahead of, of course, but beat week one and ideally sweep as you try to get your
your, your, your, your, your FC North Crown back from Baltimore.
It's one of those games on the Bengal schedule, well, two of those games on the Bengal schedule
that feels like just take care of the ball and things will be okay.
The Brown's offense looks so bad.
And David and Joku is a good player.
And Quintchon Junkins looks like he's going to be a good,
NFL running back.
And Jerry Judy's an okay wide receiver.
But that offensive line is not the offensive line.
It used to be Jack Conklin, Wyatt Teller, Joel Betonia.
They're all still there.
But none of them are playing as well as they used to.
And that entire offense just looks like it's going to be tough.
We've talked a lot about pulling teeth on the lockdown Bengals podcast this offseason.
That's what watching the Cleveland Browns offense should feel like.
most weeks. Now, is a Bengals defense ready for week one?
After what they did last year, hopefully the Cleveland Browns' offense experience in week one this year is pulling teeth.
But then you mentioned on the defensive side of the ball. And it's hard for me to see the Browns as a better roster.
They have just so much money locked up in a quarterback that won't be playing for them.
But adding Mason Graham is adding a good player, coupling that with Miles Garrett.
and Carson Sussinger in the second round.
So we got Denzel Ward in a secondary room
that has annoyed the Bengals skill players in the past
with Martin Emerson,
who took a massive step back last year,
Greg Newsom as well.
The Browns just, despite all that money they're spending,
aren't getting what they need to get out of their football team.
And a lot of that, I think, is down to the culture and the quarterback.
But it's hard for me to feel
like the Browns should be standing toe to toe to
with the Bengals on paper, but yet every year.
Well, sure.
They managed to.
No, they will.
It'll be tight games.
But they're games like if you're going to get off to the hot start
and you're going to be a real contender, not just for the playoffs,
but to win the division.
And we're going to be talking about seating in December and not playoffs
and playoff contention.
Got to handle business.
Got to handle business against the Browns twice.
It's tough because there's,
It's not going to be an easy game in the North.
There's just not.
And part of it is they're going to be able to get after Joe.
Who knows what that looks like with the secondary, but you look at it, and there's talent
in that secondary.
And in the past, they've been able to slow down the Bengals offense.
The Bengals obviously were able to figure it out last year.
But that's, they're projected to finish forth for a reason.
and I see why.
I also understand why a lot of Bengals fans
and probably those internally with the Bengals
make a face when you have to deal with the Browns
because it's a tough matchup.
And so they're going to have to go there and show,
hey, yeah, you might have added some talent
in that running back room.
And I do.
I think the running back room is going to be much better
with Judkins and Samson as a one-two punch this year
than what they had last year.
The Jerry, Judy, Sedric Tillman, Deontay Johnson
and trio, it's
interesting to say the least.
They could work.
I mean, they have talent there,
but is Joe Flacco going to recapture the magic from two years ago?
Or is Shador Sanders going to be ready to go right away
and have them in playoff contention?
I think that that's really tough.
Yes.
But it's still going to be a tough matchup for the Bengals.
And so I think that's how you sum it up.
They're not a true playoff contender.
But could they?
be a thorn in the Bengals side because of Miles Garrett and because of Mason Graham.
I mean, just think about that alone, having to deal with those guys.
If Mason Graham is who a lot of NFL evaluators thought he was coming out and Miles Garrett
fresh off of a new contract and motivated.
That's tough to deal with.
And Isaiah McGuire, with that second year leap for them last year, really took off adding
a guy I remember talking about pre-draft.
We talked about him.
Yeah.
So, you know, past rush issues.
for the Bengals to deal with with the Cleveland Browns, I think, remain.
And worth noting, the Browns only won three games last year, and the Bengals beat him twice,
but the Browns took games off the Steelers and the Ravens last year.
So the AFC North is never going to be one of these divisions that is like the AFC South
or even the current AFC East where there are some good teams, like the Buffalo Bills are a good team.
but then there's some real bad sellers while their teams.
And those divisional games are always tough.
I think you talk to any locked on host about the bills matchup against the Patriots.
And Joe Marino would sit here and tell you, yeah, I'm confident in the bills against the Patriots,
but it's still a divisional game, man, and sometimes those get weird.
Sometimes they know each other so well that those games get away from you.
Not as much a case in the AFC South where the team that happens to be decent in the AFC South
just seems to run away with that.
division every year because that division sucks that's why historically it's just been so bad like so
bad it produces number one seeds like the tennessee titans when the bengals beat them in nashville
because the division is just miserable you get you get six games sometimes every year against
really bad teams so right 10 i was a legend a legend jesse bates loves him the the point i was
trying to make here is that the the afc north even this year with teams that i don't know that any of the
teams in the AFC North got significantly better than they were last year.
The Ravens were already really good, but I don't know that any of these teams got significantly
better.
It's still not going to be one of these pushover divisions in the NFL.
It's just not like that.
The AFC North is going to continue to be brutal.
It's going to continue to be annoying, and there are going to be games that are going to continue
to be tough, at least on paper in June.
And that's the way we see the division right now.
Where do you think the Bengals are?
We've decided Ravens favored should be favored.
I think I agree with you there.
Steelers, Steelers, Bengals, honestly, like somewhat close, but I do give the Bengals the second place standing there.
I think in my June thoughts.
And then the Browns clear last.
Yeah, Ravens, Bengals, Steelers, Browns.
It is close.
The Bengals don't have the defensive front that the Steelers have, but they do have the quarterback.
and quarterback breaks that tie for sure.
And so Steelers are, the Steelers could win the division.
Like it wouldn't shock me if they won the division.
But I certainly think they're third today as we look at how things are.
Mike Tomlin knows how to get a lot out of that team in the regular season, at least.
He's got a ring now.
I know it's been a while.
It's been a very long time.
They still.
They did it.
Don't.
You can't take that away from them.
Joe Burrow was like, eight.
No.
Well, no, like for real.
Like he wasn't even.
Yeah, it was a very long time ago.
I was in high school.
So.
Very long time ago.
Aaron Rogers beat him in the last Super Bowl he was in.
I was so excited about that.
I was in college for that one.
I was in college for that one.
I was watching that one with a few Steelers fans in my first job in Madison, Wisconsin,
after university at the time.
Roodle, you were with Steelers fan.
I, the whole, I mean, I was in.
watching them suffer.
It wasn't only Steelers fans.
It wasn't a Steelers watch party,
but they were present at the Super Bowl party.
Yeah.
Got it.
Well, not much you could have said after that season.
Yeah, but it was nice to watch the Steelers lose.
