Two years in a row, Netflix's quarterback will feature a Bengals quarterback.
This year, it's Joe Flacco.
And once again, I ask, how can you not be romantic about Joe Flacco?
You are locked on Bengals, your daily Cincinnati Bengals podcast.
Part of the Locked on Podcast Network, your team every day.
What up, Bengals fans, and welcome to another episode of the Locked on Bengals podcast.
He's James Rapine, and I'm Jake Lisco.
We are Locked on Bengals.
today discussing our hopes and dreams for the Bengals schedule that will be coming out tomorrow
or today, depending on when you're listening to this episode.
And Joe Burrow has doubled down on his approval for the front office's approach to this
offseason.
And we'll get to those topics a little bit later in the show.
But we're going to start, James, with Joe Flacco taking up for Joe Burrow and appearing
on Netflix's quarterback this year.
And that will highlight the trade for Flacco last year, what led.
to that trade. One would assume the transition from Cleveland to Cincinnati. Also on this year's
edition of quarterback is Jaden Daniels, Baker Mayfield, and rookie quarterback from the Tennessee
Titans Cam Ward. And I'm biased. I love Joe Flacco story last year. I have said, how can you
not be romantic about Joe Flacco more times than probably anyone on the planet, including his wife?
But I think it's a really compelling storyline, especially when you put it up against those other
quarterbacks who were on teams that were just as bad as the Bengals last year, but were the
starters the whole time. And I just don't find out as compelling. Maybe Cam Ward's rookie story
will capture some people, but I'm excited to see Joe Flacco on quarterback. Yeah, how Cam Ward got
our guy Brian Callahan fired is going to be real fun to watch. No, I'll pay attention to it. But
the Joe Flacco scenario, why this is so interesting to me, is why it was so interesting in
the moment. Week one, you're going to see Joe Burrow, Joe Flack.
and everything that happened in that game where the Browns and a lot of,
a lot of reasons to believe that they should have won that game.
And a couple of drops turned into interceptions really cost Joe Flacco.
And a few weeks later, after the Bengals start 2 and O and then drop three straight,
and it feels like their season is just going to go down the drain and they're going to drown,
they get this life preserver in this 40-year-old quarterback that comes in, drives down 71.
I hope that's highlighted in quarterback.
And suddenly the Bengals have to pivot because they weren't doing quarterback for a second season.
And suddenly the docu series or whatever you want to call it, the Peyton Manning led drama that is, you know, documentary style is suddenly back into our lives.
And I'm excited about it for that.
And let's be honest here.
The reason why you drop that line, which I'm not going to do that, to Jake, let's go trademark, is because of what he brought.
to this Bengals organization.
And from an energy standpoint, things flipped.
It flipped for us.
It flipped for the team.
It flipped for the locker room and the coaching staff.
There was a real belief that their season was back on.
And so whether it was going into Lambo and feeling like they had a shot in the second
half when things got going and being one stop away from getting the ball back to Joe Flacco,
down six with the chance to go win the game or winning against Pittsburgh and Aaron Rogers
on Thursday night football, just eight days after he was acquired,
or the heartbreak of the next two weeks,
where it really felt like the Bengals were back in it
and had a chance against the Jets to get to 500.
They blow that game.
Flacco gets hurt.
There was no doubt during that week that Flacco was going to play internally.
I think he told his teammates,
hey, I'm going to play even though my shoulders hurt all of those things,
and he plays against the Bears, and they almost blow off a miracle.
Like, there's a lot of fun in a month span there
that is going to be really interesting.
And so, yeah, I'm excited about this in some ways.
I think it's more intriguing and could be more captivating than when Joe Burrow was on
quarterback.
And I don't say that lightly.
I think that, thank goodness he got traded because otherwise, if this was just Brown's backup
quarterback Joe Flacco bench for Dylan Gabriel and everything that went on and he didn't
get traded for Cincinnati, this year of quarterback might stink.
Instead, they have a huge storyline with Flacco.
and some other pieces, because I do think that the Jane Daniels saga and how he underachieved
after being so great year one and dealt with injuries and all of those things, I think that'll
be interesting as well.
So it should be good.
I'm in.
I'm in for sure.
Maybe to some people, the Jane Daniels thing will be cool.
I don't.
It's bias for sure.
It's an NFC quarterback.
I pay much less attention to the NFC as someone who is tracking the Bengals closely.
and looking at their chances to make it somewhere.
I don't think it's close for all the reasons that you talked about.
I mean, Flacco have, what, one bad game as a starter for the Bengals
against the second time in Pittsburgh?
Like, they were right there with New England,
and a lot of that was Drake May starting that game terribly,
and I don't think Flacco necessarily finished that game.
We had the big six.
They win with Burrow, but yeah.
They were in a position to win the game.
Anyway, the first four games, unquestionably better than the next.
too for Flacco after the by week where the shoulder injury lingering could have potentially
been a factor but it would be much more interesting if they had won those games like they hold
on against Chicago they hold on against New York two games that they could have one but either
way the the trade will be fascinating the week one I hadn't even thought about that angle the
the Bengals beat the Browns by one point and beat Joe Flacco by one point in week one and so
that will also be really interesting.
And then how does the documentary handle the return of Joe Burrow for the last six games?
And Flacco's return to the bench and his role in that capacity.
I imagine we'll see less of Flacco at that part of the season if they go chronologically,
which I assume they will.
But it'll still probably provide us some glimpse into how he settled into that role with the Bengals
that he will once again be filling for the team as we head into 20.
26. And I think that is a little tidbit that'll be probably much more interesting to Bengals fans than
anyone else. And I'm sure we'll get an iconic moment, right, of Joe Flacco sitting in a restaurant
by himself in peace and quiet, enjoying a meal, right? After he talked about that last year,
that's surely going to be a scene in this TV show, right? It will. And I do wonder how many
clips they use of that. Like, he had so many good one-liners and stories.
and thoughts during this.
And I just, I really hope there's a camera when he's on the phone with Zach Taylor.
And Zach Taylor says, hey, you want to start Sunday?
He's like, yeah, right?
Yeah.
Because that excitement, he thought, he probably thought he wasn't going to start again in Cleveland.
The writing was on the wall that Cleveland ownership was out on Kevin Stefansky.
I mean, Stefansky won that final game over the Bengals and he gets fired, right?
Like there, there, there, there's a lot, a lot there where I was like, hmm, like I just, for me, it's, it's, it's really, it's going to be cool to see all of the, the, the emotion, assuming he let that process.
He might have went right into like starter mode, let me focus and that's it.
But it also might have been like, oh, man, here is, just like it was a Bengals lifeline.
Maybe it felt like a lifeline for him to show everyone, which he did, that he can still play at a high level.
I don't know, but maybe.
And I also wonder, we overlooked the Pro Bowl thing a little bit.
I think it would be cool at the end of the show if they had something where he gets the call about going to the Pro Bowl.
It's his first official Pro Bowl that passed on it a few times in the past.
I hope we get that emotion, too.
Again, hard for me to imagine that cameras around, but maybe they were.
Maybe they were able to orchestrate it and capture that.
could be cool if we get it.
If nothing else, we'll get something to do with the Pro Bowl,
where once again, Joe Burrow was also there.
And I am usually not excited for these things.
But Joe Flacco story last year,
I found to be uniquely compelling.
And so I'm going to go out of my way to at least watch the Joe Flacco scenes.
Last year, all I did was watch the Joe Burrow scenes when Burrow was on quarterback.
I didn't really care too much for the rest.
But pretty cool to,
to get a deeper look at the Flacco story from 2025.
That is one of the more interesting stories you could have for a guy at that stage in his career,
getting traded from a bad team to try to pick up a desperate team on the other end
and come so close to doing.
So like I said, it would have been great if they had won some of those games,
especially for the TV show,
but it's still going to be really interesting to see all of the things that we've talked about here.
And it would also be interesting to see the behind the scenes on Joe Burrow,
this offseason as he watched the Dexter Lawrence trade go down.
I'm sure we'll hear from Joe soon about what his thoughts were
and his perspective on the Dexter Lawrence trade.
We haven't heard from Joe a whole lot since then.
Just a couple of interviews with some small outlets and, well, not small outlets.
Vanity Fair is not a small outlet, but Vanity Fair is on football.
That tiny publishing company called Vanity Fair.
You ever heard of it?
And he did give Butch Hobson a couple quotes for Bengals.com.
But we'll hear from him, I assume, in greater details soon.
And we'll hear from him about the trade.
But once again in that interview or quote with Jeff Hobson of Bengals.com,
another stamp of approval from Joe Burrow on this Bengals offseason that I wanted to revisit yesterday.
We will revisit now coming up next.
Today's show is brought you by game time.
Look, it's schedule time.
Game time is the perfect time for scheduled time.
because in life, whether it's ordering food in minutes,
watching everything, including Joe Flacco and Joe Burrow on quarterback,
on your phones, or buying tickets to live events,
well, the live events part hasn't caught up with the rest of those things,
how quick, easy, seamless it is until now.
Game time is going to help you get into all of your favorite games,
all of your favorite matchups, every single game that is released on the Bengals
schedule on Thursday night.
You will be able to check out with game time.
And look, from seeing the full price up front, which I think is huge, there's nothing worse, Jake, than looking at prices, be like, oh, that's a good deal.
Clicking it going to checkout and boom, it's nearly doubled.
Or it's gone up 60%.
Game time shows you the all-end pricing.
They also have the seat views, panoramic views.
So maybe you haven't been to Houston, a place that the Bengals are playing at this year.
And you want to see exactly what it's going to look like from the seats you're looking at whenever that schedule comes out.
boom, you can do that.
It's quick, easy, and makes life so much easier.

that's square sq u a r e dot com slash geo slash locked on nfl run your business
mortar with squint get started today jake joe burrow as you mentioned has talked a few times to
little outlets like vanity fair big outlets and big writers like like jeff huh tiny that yeah small
yeah deuce vaughan size right uh sized outlets uh but jeff hopsin and bengles dot com is is much bigger uh a
much bigger enterprise.
And he talked with Burrough as well after the international game was announced.
And obviously we're going to get the whole schedule on Thursday night.
But to me, this quote stood out as I was reading Bengals.com.
He said there's energy emanating throughout.
You can feel it.
We still have to go out, execute perform, keep getting better throughout the offseason.
But with the guys we have in here, we have everything we need.
And that last line is so huge.
because there's been a ton of speculation discussion.
It will continue about Joe Burroughs future.
It's not going anywhere at this point.
I think they could win a Super Bowl.
It would still be here.
It's just part of it.
It's part of life with a star like this and a market like Cincinnati.
But the we have everything we need.
I think this is the first time Joe Burrow has felt that since 2022.
I think this is the first time he's truly felt that way in a long time.
time and we have everything we need.
That's a hell of a spot to be in.
I get it's only May, but it is music to my years, your ears, probably everybody listening
and watching their ears when Joey B is saying something like that, we have everything we need.
Maybe 2023.
Not to nitpick too much, but like after 2022, I'm sure they thought they would be back and then
he gets hurt.
I don't know that he went into 2023 thinking that it was going to be a letdown year the
way it was, but he got hurt. That was part of it, right? Like, don't you think 2023 probably felt
reasonably confident? For sure, day one of training camp, 20203 is the best I've ever seen Joe Burrow play.
Yeah. It was one practice, and it was the best I've ever seen him play. And literally, he was so
dialed it. It looked like he was ready to go. And then obviously, you have the calf and then the,
you know, the contract stuff. And it just, it never felt like really after that day one,
it felt like they were always chasing.
So I don't know if he had the opportunity to say,
we have everything we,
we have everything we need.
I don't even know if he had a chance to really evaluate what it was
because he was always worried about getting his body right.
And by the time he did,
then the other thing went wrong with the wrist.
So yeah, that's an odd year.
But in May, in May that year,
he probably was feeling like they would be right back competing in the AFC.
Probably.
I mean, they had just added, they had just added Orlando, right?
But little did we know the Nick Scott, Dax Hill combo wasn't.
You know what I'm saying?
Well, I remember going into that draft or like the Bengals aren't drafts in a safety.
And they did.
They drafted Jordan Battle.
But they, there's a lot there, man.
The league at large was much more correct about how desperate they were going to be for
safety and didn't seem like their plan was to address safety and they did anyway i i agree
largely with the sentiment that you're saying here is that we went into this offseason calling it a
huge offseason and i was like well we'll see if they do anything because the last two off seasons
have also been pretty big and finally we got this we talked about the vanity fair quote a small outlet
small interview is what I meant to say, especially as it pertains to football.
Tiny outlet.
Yeah.
I wonder if they ran out of a garage.
You know what?
Vanity Fair should probably be given us a little bit of something for mentioning their small
publication so many times on this podcast today.
Anyway, in that article, there was a specific mention that evokes the idea of Joe Burroughs saying
the front office is to recognize that we're in a window here.
And again, now he's saying, we have the guys that we need.
And so once again, publicly praising, appreciating, approving the approach by the Bengals to this offseason.
And notably, I think this changes significantly when they take the swing on Dexter Lawrence.
I think that will be something we look back on as a turning point.
And we'll see how it turns out.
But the energy that followed the arrival of Dexter Lawrence and the confidence that has grown
from that move for pretty much every player that has been asked about it is certainly noticeable
at this time of year. And when you have guys like Tim Hasselbeck going on NFL live with a panel
of folks talking about, you know, I compare him to Matthew Stafford and his years with the lions
and blah, blah, blah, the injuries and the lack of success. Shout to John Sheridan for this.
compared Joe Burrow through six years to Matt Stafford through six years.
Burrow 43, 33 and one in the regular season, five and two in the postseason.
Stafford was 35 and 42 in the regular season.
So I had a losing record in the regular season where Joe's 10 games over 500.
Stafford seven games below 500 with the Lions and 0.
And two postseason record for the Lions.
So he made it to the postseason twice, like Joe did, didn't win it all once he got there.
They never won the division in the first six years of Matt Stafford's time in Detroit.
He was a pro bowler once Joe Burrow, obviously won the division twice, has been a three times pro bowler.
So shout up for John Sharon finding just that very simple comparison that I think almost immediately debunks the comparison to Matthew Stafford.
And he played Stafford did in Detroit for, what, 12 years before he ended up getting traded to the Rams.
So we have some folks out there that are still talking about this narrative that are still pushing it.
Meanwhile, Joe Burrow is doubling down on his approval for the way the Bengals went about this offseason in a period that he recognizes and praise the front office for recognizing is a window that they needed to go after.
Look, Jake, a lot of what people are saying about Matthew Stafford is what they should.
And Joe is the next Matthew Stafford.
They should look at Los Angeles and that guy named Justin Herbert who films music videos in the offseason and no one really talks.
talks about that because that is a far better comp when it comes to that. And I don't need to look at
stats or anything like that. But it just, Burrow, yeah, the Bengals failed Burrow at times, absolutely.
There's no doubt about it. But dismissing it that way, especially with what they've done this
offseason and in the success they had early in their career, I'm just not going to do that.
And Joe saying what he said, we have everything we need. How many times did Matt Stafford say that?
answer not many and part of it is Joe Burrow is better than Matt Stafford was at any point in
Detroit and that's a huge factor when he's healthy he is better and he's a true legitimate MVP
candidate and Matt Stafford may be one way now in playing the best ball of his career now
well Joe Burrow in his first six years better than Matthew Stafford's first six years and
John Sharon did point it out and I'm glad he did so there you go
Let's talk about what we hope to see from the Bengal schedule.
Our one opportunity to do so here, we talk about what we're hoping to see from the schedule
the day before we get the schedule.
We'll, of course, have our thoughts on the schedule after it's released for you tomorrow.
But let's talk about what we're hoping to see what we're not hoping to see in this year's
schedule to finish the show next.

It goes without saying that if the NFL schedules another Thursday night game for the Bengals in
Baltimore, there will be riots at NFL headquarters.
The Bengals fans in mass will travel to New York and riot.
There will be protests if it is six straight years, six straight years, five straight
years of primetime games in Baltimore for the back, especially if there's a night football
again.
It would be a fourth straight Thursday night.
Yeah.
You know, and you certainly know this about me.
There is a part of me, not a lot, but there's definitely a part of me that was.
love that villain role and you go there and you win again because they did that last year on
Thanksgiving and it was like a huge win and they should have done it two years ago and nearly
did and didn't and it does feel like a stack deck when you have to deal with that and so being
in that position like there's a big part of me that in general likes that like being in those
positions that being said it's a really tough position
to be in and we've seen the Bengals in it enough and it would be nice if that wasn't the case and
mostly because I know the Bengals feel that way they don't want that Zach Taylor's comments on
Tuesday reflect that Joe Burrow last year when we asked him about it shortly after the schedule
came out those reflect that as well so I would be surprised if it happens again but if it did
I would instantly go into okay fine you think this is how it's going to be fine and that's
just kind of like my mentality with things so there's part of me that's
that likes that.
But I don't think it's realistic.
I don't think the NFL can do it again.
They can't do it again, right?
No, I think it's actually the opposite.
And I think I've said this elsewhere when I might have said it last year when they released
the schedule.
And like Mike North, the schedule guy, people, every dayers will recognize our conversation
about the schedule guy from yesterday.
So shout out to the everydayers out there, those of you who make locked on Bengals,
part of your daily routine.
He acknowledged last year.
that it was kind of a thing, right?
It was not necessarily desirable to have that being an ongoing thing.
So if anything, I would guess the opposite.
And I've said this, like primetime Baltimore in Cincinnati this year.
Thursday night would make it extra poetic.
And so we'll see if that's the way it ends up going.
That is something I would like to see.
Give that Thursday night treatment to Baltimore on the road.
Because Baltimore, I remember I looked,
and I think for the AFC North, Baltimore has played the fewest road,
division Thursday night games in the last, what, 10 years or whatever it was that I looked at.
I don't remember what the time frame was anymore.
I'd have to go back and find the research, but it's time for Baltimore to feel that short
week travel to a division opponent.
And so we'll see if that is the case this year or not.
Other things that we're hoping for, and I talked about this yesterday, James, I was looking
into how exactly the procedure worked around the buy week.
international games and I found that comment from the president of the Detroit Lions who have
an international game this year and he said that the by week is no longer guaranteed to be the
week after an international game. I'm hoping that that's got to be, right? It's got to be.
That's where it should be. We kind of made that assumption yesterday. I'm hoping that's where
it is. If it's not, I think we'll probably have complaints about it tomorrow. Orlando Brown in his
comments to Jeff Hobson in that article that we referenced earlier also assumed.
that there would be a buy week and week 10 after that week nine trip to Madrid.
So hopefully that's the case.
And there's no screwy business with the buy week for the Bengals,
knowing that they have this international game right in the middle of their schedule.
It's like an eight and a half hour flight.
I looked it up just to give like from from here, just to give you an idea.
And the time zone difference is air time like six hours.
Six hours, yeah.
Yeah.
So you lose 14.
let's just say you jump on at at 6 a.m.
And it's like, let's go, let's round up to nine hours, right?
6 a.m.
Well, it's really noon.
So you're going to land there and it's going to be night.
And so that's going to burn your whole day.
And so when they do it, all those things, whatever, I don't know.
But it's definitely going to mess with you some.
And then so to get back and have to play, that would be tough.
Like I'm just going to assume, maybe I'm going to make an ass out of myself,
but I'm going to assume that week 10 is up by.
I'm not booking my vacation yet for week 10, but I'm hopeful that they would be smart enough to allow that to be the buy.
It continues to seem like the common sense thing to do.
That comment from the Detroit Lions president really does stand out.
And I don't know his name is why I'm calling him by his title.
But it was someone high up and executive in the Detroit Lions organization who was talking about it,
talking about it with relation to the international games.
And so I, you know, I looked at flights preliminarily to Madrid.
and it's a funny thing where like for me I would be leaving at say like 4.30 p.m.
and landing at 5.30 p.m. but it's the next day or something.
And like 12 hours have passed but it's 24 hours later kind of thing.
Yeah, yeah, yeah, because you're losing nine or whatever plus the flight.
Yeah, yeah, it's weird.
That was that was something that I noticed when I looked.
Like it's 12 hours to get there, but it's 24 hours later in graphical time because the time's
any other schedule quirks that you're hoping for here for the Bengals.
I do expect them to open at home.
Have we hit on that?
No, that would be great.
I expect that, and that's strictly based on Reds.
Like, that's the only thing, look at the Red schedule.
And you look at week one.
Are they at home?
The Reds are.
Yep.
So it would make sense that it doesn't roll out Monday night, right?
They can do a Monday night game.
And then all that's wrong.
I thought I saw someone said that week one Monday night, the Reds have a night game.
So that would not be.
No, no, no, I mean week two.
Oh, week two.
Yeah, yeah.
Yeah, yeah.
So, like, week two doesn't rule it out.
Could be that, right?
But I just try to read the tea leaves as best you can.
It, we'll see.
I'm pretty excited.
I like a lot of these matchups.
I think that, you know, I'm excited to see the schedule.
And I think there's rightfully so.
What do you think the announcement's going to be?
How do you think they're going to announce it?
The Bengals haven't really gone all out for these in the past.
Last year was like Joe Joe Burrell, here is the 2025 Cincinnati Bengals schedule.
Cut.
Remember it was that one.
They haven't had a ton of fun with it.
They're not like, what is it, the Chargers?
Usually speaking of the Chargers twice in the episode, that's usually one of the big ones.
I don't know how they'll do it.
The Los Angeles Lions with Justin Stafford.
Is that what you're talking about?
Right.
Yeah.
Yeah.
No.
What?
Oh, man.
Yeah.
Yeah.
There's a lot.
talking about. There's a lot there.
The Los Angeles Lines and Justin Stafford.
It's wild.
Because Stafford plays for the other L.A. team is where I got hung up.
No, no, no. Yeah.
The only other notes that I...
The Detroit cook, get it?
Yeah, the other notes that I have looking at the schedule here.
Kansas City at home, prime time, that would be a good one for prime time.
I would like to see the Bengals have an imbalance of primetime games at home versus away this year,
which is something that has worked dramatically against them in the last couple of years.
their split of home and away primetime games has been dramatically road heavy,
and that has been accentuated by them losing home primetime games
that are getting flexed out of primetime because they haven't had the seasons they've been looking for.
So that's one thing that I'm looking for and hoping for the Bengals schedule.
And they play a couple of Florida teams at Jacksonville, Jaguars, Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
And you could even extend this to the New Orleans Saints and the NFC South playing in a dome,
that it would be great to see those southern teams in Cincinnati.
in December or later.
And I think you expect the last two weeks of the season,
the way the NFL's been doing it lately to probably be divisional games,
or at least toward the end of the season,
you probably will see more divisional games there.
But getting some of those Florida teams in Cincinnati,
when it's a little bit colder, could be a nice little bonus.
Yeah, I like that.
I, it, especially Miami.
Miami's the one for sure.
Jacksonville gets kind of cold anyway.
Like I don't think it would be that, that different.
But, yeah, it would be surprising to see a September Jacksonville.
The past two in Cincinnati have been in September.
You think 2021 was that Thursday night game you came to?
And then last year was week two.
So you think that it would be more surprising to see it in September again than you would just say, like, yeah, they'll do that again.
I maybe either one like neither would shock me but I just
like Miami is right
Miami would love to come to Ohio in September
you know so from their point of view they're like yeah I hope that Bengals
I mean Miami is probably going to be a dumpster fire this year
and I say that knowing that the Bengals lost to the New England Patriots a week
one two years ago Miami game is in Miami sorry Tampa though
Tampa is a road game or a road game for Tampa Tampa Tampa Tampa Tampa
is in Cincinnati.
And that's the other Florida team.
The Bengals are going to Miami this year.
Yeah, yeah, that's right.
So, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
Gotcha.
Yeah.
Be nice to be going to Tampa in December.
Let's flip that.
Let's trade.
Well, you could go to Miami in December instead.
We already did that.
Well, you can do it again.
I already did that.
I already saw how that is.
That's a lot to a little.
Unless there's something on the line, man.
I already know how that one's going to end.
We'll have a full reaction.
to the Bengals schedule tomorrow, which I'm sure
will have something to be upset about.
I have an ongoing complaint.
I don't know.
Don't be negative.
Every single year, I've taken issue with the way they put the schedule together in the NFL
and competitive advantages that are baked into the schedule due to rest disparities,
travel disparities, and things like that.
The NFL does not prioritize rest equality, travel equality,
fairness, in my opinion, competitive equity when they're putting the schedule together.
They're prioritizing marketing, which I get it.
They are an entertainment business, but that is why I expect to be upset about something.
I guess.
We'll see.
I'm going to be optimistic here.
It's going to be the perfect picturesque bengal schedule, and Jake is going to think that they're going to go 17 and 0 after he sees it.
Perfect.
And if I do, I will tell you.
We'll be back with that schedule release review tomorrow here on lockdown Bengals.
then thanks for listening hoota and have a good
