Another almost game for the Cincinnati Bengals.
They almost overcome adversity.
They almost win at the end, but almost.
It doesn't count in football.
You are locked on Bengals, your daily Cincinnati Bengals podcast.
Part of the Locked on Podcast Network, your team every day.
The Bengals once again come up short in the clutch,
and that's where we're starting this episode of the Lockdown Bengals podcast.
Yes, another very frustrating viewing experience
as the Bengals lose at home in week four
with the chance to walk off against the Jacksonville Jaguars.
He's a good, great object.
Let's go.
We are locked on Bengals.
Bengals also lose both Jamar Chase and T. Higgins to injuries in this game.
The officials went crazy, lots to talk about,
and a very frustrating loss for the Bengals to drop to two and two.
This episode brought to you by Fandul,
where you can make this season your most rewarding yet with Fandul Rewards Club.
Every week, check the Fandul app to see.
what's waiting for you.
And Joe, I almost made this episode
just like too many missed opportunities.
That's it.
That's the whole episode.
Too many missed opportunities.
And then we could close it there.
But there's actually a lot to talk about here.
There's so many things that went wrong
at so many times in this game
from a punt decision on the very first drive of the game
to the way the Bengals finished the game
from start to end.
There are things to be critical of.
There are things this team could have done
to win this game with the opportunities they had
and did not capitalize it.
Yeah, once again, a heartbreaking loss at the end of a game
where you have an opportunity to drive down the field.
And you're doing it without T. Higgins.
You're doing it without Jamar Chase.
And at this point, I was pretty reluctant to have any hope, right?
They get the ball.
And I'm like, okay, you've got a chance.
Let's just see.
The receivers aren't out there.
And then bang, big throw, bang, big throw.
You know, Mitch Tinsley, Mike Keseki.
And I'm like, oh, man, they may actually have a chance here.
I thought this episode was going to be, so before we talked too much into that, I thought this
episode in like, end of the third quarter beginning of the fourth was going to be, they just
weren't good enough today, didn't have it, just couldn't move the ball well enough on offense.
You got 10 points on offense, not acceptable.
I don't care, you know, if you're missing your best player in Jumar Chase.
That's where my mind was in the fourth quarter.
I was probably hate watching the fourth quarter more than anything because I was so frustrated
with this offense.
And then you get that last track and they have a chance.
And they're down there.
You're in the red zone.
You've got four opportunities to push this ball and make a play.
And it looked like they had Mike Keseki open on one play.
It looked like Dante Myers got pass interfered with on a slant.
It looked like Mitch Tinsley's got a guy draped all over him
and forcing them to the sideline as the ball is approaching.
And then we can talk about the final play at some point.
But again, it comes down to this offense could not capitalize and steal
a win to end this game.
When we go back through this game,
and we probably will still do our rewatch,
it's going to be painful.
It will be there for those of you
who are just can't let go of it,
who want to relive it with us for some reason.
I mean, really frustrating game.
More frustrating than last week for me,
but we well be doing that for our Everydayer Club
and for Joe subscribers on Twitter.
You can find out more about the Everydayer Club
at Lockdown Bengals.
com.
But when we're doing this,
when we're going back through the tape,
I don't know how many pieces of paper we're going to need for the missed opportunities in this game.
Because like I said, it starts at the beginning of the game with the punt decision from your 44 yard line on fourth and less than a yard.
And then we get multiple plays where Joe Brod throws a red zone interception with a chance to take the lead, right?
Take the lead late in this game.
You have touchdowns called back on holding for both teams in this game.
You have special teams mistakes by both teams in this game.
penalties out of control, holding penalties out of control from this officiating crew,
period.
I don't know what you can do about that.
That's just crazy.
It was a chaos game for that, right?
Because it was on both teams.
I'm sure the Jags would have been frustrated had they lose this game with some of the penalties
called as well.
I just don't want to watch a game where there's that many penalties.
And then obvious ones don't get called.
I just, I hate everything about that.
I don't even want to talk about it because it was so poorly officiated.
Yeah, I don't know how we can't talk about the Dante Myers play in particular.
at the end of the game.
This was like what they put in that one year you were allowed to review DPI for
because a player literally got tackled well before the ball arrived.
That's as clear as it gets to me.
And the officials here who apparently not too long ago,
at least the head referee was a college official,
not to spend too much time here,
just swallowed his whistle there.
And they chose some weird times.
It felt like to swallow whistles where it felt like every other play was a hold for a lot of the game.
There are a couple parts of the game where they're like,
ah, we're not going to call it this drive.
You guys can go ahead.
which has got to be a very frustrating experience for the players as well.
But you have two Joe Burrow interceptions,
one of which he's hit is he's throwing.
I don't put a ton of that on Joe Orlando Brown.
Let's the pressure gets home there.
That ball might have been tipped.
The second pick,
hard to defend Joe Burrow on that one.
Maybe Mitch Tinsley is supposed to keep running on his route there,
given that it's man coverage.
And Joe doesn't have the awareness,
again, thinking that it's man,
that there's a linebacker there sitting.
And maybe that confuses Tinsley and thinking he should sit down
in that little void.
And it leads to the miscommunication or such there because the Bengals don't pick up a tackle, tackle choice.
Defensive tackles run a little game.
The Bengals don't handle it.
So there is pressure that's involved there as well.
But Joe Burrough simply cannot make that mistake, especially in the Red Zone.
Then you get to the final drive, which is a gift because the Bengals very poorly defended a screen on third and 10,
which was third and seven, whatever it was, third and long, an opportunity for you to get off the field on the defense.
they give you a gift by not throwing it past the sticks in the field of the field
because of how successful the Jaguars were there all game.
Their success rate, middle of the field, intermediate has got to be astronomical in this game.
They give you a gift and a chance to make a tackle short of the line of scrimmage
and you got guys getting blocked up, missing tackles, not getting off blocks.
You get lucky that Parker Washington steps out of bounds.
You go all the way down the field only for you to miss three shots,
including the Mike Keseki could have been go-ahead touchdown that Joe Burrow doesn't
deliver on target and then a throw short of the sticks on fourth down.
I had so much adrenaline and I think it's adrenaline because I was like shaky after this
game and I think I put that towards adrenaline because there were so many moments of
frustration and and building frustration through this game because there were a play like a
third and 18 early in the game where Jordan Battle can't make a simple tackle.
First of all, we like this the tight end go off the line of scrimmage.
free for 15 yards again, which happens later on the on the third down before the Parker
Washington screen, right? They just let the tight end go over the middle. And the fact that they
even get a second chance there is lucky. I know you're 12 yards off of him on third and
eight. What do you think is going to happen? I can't practice squad safety outside leverage. You
know they're trying to go middle of field. You're trying to drop a linebacker from zero into that
window and it just doesn't work. Right. You're you're, you're, you're, you're, you're,
putting so much as from out this directly at L. Golden, you're putting so much pressure on those
defenders to make something out of nothing on that play that it drives me nuts. And this extends.
I want to get to like how you think Joe Burrow played. I'd like to talk about that because a lot of
discussion on it. I'd like to talk largely how the defense played, but just a couple of points here.
One on the L. Golden thing there on defense that they, you know, you're asking these guys to make
wine out of water, right? Just because that play has failed from the beginning. You can see as they
lineup. You're like, nobody's on the tight end. No one's on him. What are they going to do?
They run, they put the guy out in motion and they go, okay, easy. We got a safety there,
12 yards off of them. Like, what are you trying to do there? And then the same can be said for the
offense. Most of the successful plays today were guys winning contested catches or making
crazy catches on the sideline. That is not sustainable. The run game sucked today.
The blocking for the run game was terrible. How many, we could probably count,
three mistackles forced the entire day.
Probably one from Dante Myers, one from T. Higgins.
And there was one other one, and I can't remember what it was now.
But that's not acceptable either.
We need guys to make guys miss.
Chase Brown, especially.
It's starting to become a thing.
Chase Brown isn't making anybody miss.
But the line and the tight ends and the wide receivers blocked like crap today.
I was so frustrated with the run game that at some point I'm like,
you probably shouldn't run the ball the rest of the game.
And they don't.
They don't.
They just go straight shotgun.
We're going to throw this ball.
but they don't have a great concept.
They've got guys standing in windows.
Guys aren't running down the field.
They're not pushing it.
They're not threatening it.
And the Jags are teeing off.
And I am at this point of,
I came into this game like,
it's okay to lose this game because the Jags are very, very good.
And then I have flipped 180 completely
because I hated the way this game turned out.
This is a very frustrating loss for so many reasons.
And those are going to come back up as we work our way back through the game.
But you're right.
The offense in this game felt so static.
It felt like there were a number of plays in this game where Joe Burroughs throwing to stop targets,
trying to fit the ball into windows, trying to play timing, football, rhythm football, and the Jaguars offenders.
Travis Hunter lighting up Dante Myers or Jerry and Jones, I think it was working through,
or maybe it was a safety working through the back of Mike Gaseki for a pass breakup or two that stand out,
where you're throwing the static targets and the Jaguars are just getting downhill.
Flying.
And Burrow did hit some balls downfield in this game.
They early in the game found some success over the middle.
their very first drive featured a successful running back screen,
a successful play action pass,
and then that promptly disintegrated.
But let's talk about how Joe Burrow played.
Joe Goodberry.
We'll continue the discussion on that topic coming up next.
Today's show is brought to you by our friends over there at Butcher Box.

Jake, let's talk about Joe Burrow and his performance today.
A lot of conversation.
At one point, he's completing about 79% of his passes and he has a 7.5 yards per
attempt.
I don't know what it ended up either because I didn't get time right after the game.
But he was good, I want to say, for most of this game.
But most of is not going to be good enough in this scenario or in the situation, I feel like,
because the interceptions are going to stand out in a game shortened on possessions, right?
We talked about this in the preview show, that these teams are going to take all the time on the clock.
They're going to methodically push this ball down the field, right?
And it's going to be 10, 12 play drives for both teams.
Through the first half, each team only had four possessions.
At that point, Bengals are down two scores, and I'm thinking if you get four in the second half,
you better score on every single possession.
And they have an interception.
They have a three and out.
a bunch of low probability plays again because the screen gets blown up and then we got a back
shoulder ball and then a vertical ball to Mitch Tinsley again goes to the point of the offense
just being completely no flow at all. But Burrow overall, I think this game is going to come down
to those mistakes, especially the interception, the second one. And then that final few throws
to end this game. And it's hard for me to say that those people are wrong that again are going to
say Joe Burroughs not clutch that are again are going to say Joe Burrow didn't have a good game in
this game despite the numbers because it's not going to show the checkdowns. It's not going to show
taking a sack and not wanting to push the ball downfield. I can't say too much because I tend
to rely on the film and see what the film says afterwards. But I got to say coming away from this game
live, I don't think he played well in the moments that mattered. It's a tough game because
down to down Joe Burrow is pretty good. Yeah. He's actually exceptional for a large portion of this
game, but this was a game where because of the run game, Joe Burrow had to be better than that.
He could not have the mistakes he had.
You can't be near perfect for 95% of the snaps if the other 5% are disaster plays.
And turnover is one of which is in the red zone, one of which is missing Mike Keseki for
potential go ahead touchdown because then at least the Jaguars have to go drive down the field.
At least then you can say you've done your job if you're Joe Burrow.
If the Bengals were able to convert that first down to Chase Brown, the Jaguar start taking time out.
So like the time isn't really a factor here to me, like the fact that Mike Keseki could have scored too soon or whatever.
That's just a misthrow from Joe Burrow.
But the overall stat line for Joe Burrow today, 39 of 54, which I'm going to quickly do the math here, is a 72% completion percentage on 54 dropbacks.
That's 7.9 yards per attempt.
He had 428 passing yards in this game.
And the Bengals ran the ball 15 times for 23 yards.
So that's why this is a game where Joe Burrow had to be perfect.
And this is a game honestly where, yeah, the defense only gave up 22.
And one of those was short field, right, after Joe Burrow threw an interception,
one of those scores for Jacksonville.
Yeah, the Brian Thomas touch on.
The defense very well could have given up 30 plus in this game.
They made some plays.
Don't get me wrong.
Some guys made some plays in this game on the defensive side of the ball.
But like Brian Parker stepping out of, or not Brian Parker.
Parker, Parker, Washington, stepping out of bounds on that screen pass.
Saved them.
That's just luck.
That should be game over right there.
And instead, the Bengals get a chance.
So Joe Burrow needed to be better in this game, which is tough, man, because he was really good.
And he was getting them down the field at the end of the game without T, without Jamar.
Like, that should be a no chance situation.
You're down to two receivers on your roster.
And then Joe Burrow makes mistakes after doing all that good stuff.
And the Bengals don't win the game because he doesn't find.
Mike Keseki or because he throws that red zone interception.
It's tough, man.
Football's a hard game.
This is the game of Joe Burrow has to be perfect to win for this team because he was
for the most part.
But that is the opposite of being perfect.
Perfect means you're perfect the entire time, right?
You're 100% perfect, which is impossible.
And that is not an easy task.
It's why it's such a frustrating concept to even try to imagine this being a thing that we're
still relying on in your.
six or is it whatever it is 2026 that that were this far relying on burrow to be so good
without t higgins at the end which i thought t fought this game man because soon as he became
number one there are positives i would love to talk about i understand this is not the time
i assume the fan base does not want to hear about some of the positives that we did see on defense
on offense but t fought through this man because he was thrusted into that number
one role. And you could see the Jags were getting handsy. They wanted to fight him at the line
of scrimmage and put a safety over at top. They treated him like a number one. All the saying of
T would be a number one on 20 other teams. Well, put that to the test. And he showed up and he bawled
out until he got hurt. And he would have made a difference at the end. Probably they probably would
want to target him. They probably would have went to him on one of those four plays at the end.
That slant, try to run through T on a slant. It doesn't happen, right? He fights that guy off typically
and is able to catch it. You're at least dictating coverage, right?
Like maybe T. Higgins doesn't get that opportunity Mitch Tinsley gets to fight through one-on-one coverage for the fade or the go ball that they throw there because T. Higgins probably just beats your butt on that play and then you give up a touchdown.
But you do dictate the coverage because you know they're going to get a safety over the top of T there.
And then you can take things that are better probability chances.
You can see that it was a very low probability offense for the Bengals on that final drive.
I mean, you're hitting a go ball to Mitch Tensley who credit Mitch Tensley on that play.
man, that guy continues to be a highlight real when he gets his opportunities. He only catches
six of his seven targets in this game, but that was a big one. And if he could have come
down with that one where he needed to fight through very likely holding illegal contact and
or defensive fast interference, then we're singing his phrases much further than we are here because
he did leave those opportunities out there. But Dante Myers made a crazy catch on that drive,
right? Yeah, he did. He fights away that corner and brings it in. Again, very physical at the catch
point and that's not Dante Myers game. He fights, he fights, I think it was Jerry
Jones again. He fights off Jones and manages to bring in a catch and they get a low,
again, a low probability, beautiful throw to Mike Gaseki in a window between three
Jaguars defenders on the sideline. It's not enough. Like all these things we could say.
Crazy catch. Things that are usually signs of a team going down to win the game.
The Gaseki touched out earlier in the game. Crazy throw. There's a throw over the middle of the
field to Jamar Chase as, as before.
he left the game when Burroughs getting hit.
This is a crazy throw under pressure in a window.
I mean, there's a lot of that in this game, but it's not enough.
When you throw it 54 times, you only score 74 or 17 points because you have two
turnovers.
It's not enough.
Like this is another game where it's almost.
And at some point, that's going to be the team's identity.
Now, they can recover here.
There's a lot of season left.
If you would have told me before the season, they were two and two after four.
weeks. I could have seen a vision to success from there, but that doesn't mean it feels any better
right now in another almost game that saw T. Higgins and Jemar Chase leave with injury. We'll continue

Obviously, big factor in this game, Joe,
is Jamar Chase leaving the game early.
I was very upset with this play.
It's a face mask and then hit on a defenseless player
after he's been put into defenseless position due to the face mask.
That one rubbed me the wrong way, but the Bengals lose Jamar Chase for the rest of the game.
And immediately it looks like it takes the offense a while to find its footing again.
They never really do.
I mean, they're able to eventually start moving the ball again.
We just talked about Joe Burrow with his 400 yards.
But the things that we worried about for Jacksonville were their ability to create turnovers,
how good they've been on third downs, how good they've been in the red zone.
Those were areas that the Jaguars continued to win against Joe Burrow and the Benchon.
angles in those key moments in this game.
I'm tired and frustrated with watching our guys blatantly get taken advantage of at times,
whether it be penalties, hitting burrow late, just roughing our guys up on the ground.
In this scenario, it's Jemar Chase.
It's the best player on the team.
It gets a very bad face mask, right?
His head is twisted as far as it can go.
I'm worried about his neck when he's down first because I didn't see the hit coming across.
And then the hit happens.
And I'm ready to fight as a fan, right?
I'm sure the listener is too, right?
At that moment, you're feeling like, somebody do something.
Somebody stand up for your guys.
I watch these other, I got Red Zone on.
I got another TV on to watch other teams.
There's fighting and these, I'm not saying I want the Bengals to turn into the 2015 version
of the Marvin Lewis team, but there is a line a little bit of stand up for yourselves.
They're hurting your guys.
They're lifting legs on double teams going back.
But you know what I'm saying?
And like these things are piling up that are starting to frustrate me a little bit.
And I would like our guys to be taken care of when it doesn't feel like the refs are doing
their job in managing that part of the game.
Let's finish on the defensive side of the ball because the Bengals also lose T.
Higgins later in the game.
We've talked about that final drive without him.
And it's an ad doctor injury for him, according to Ben Baby.
I've seen report on this.
And if that's a long-term injury, I mean, that's a soft tissue injury.
So you got to worry about that lingering for T.
Dalton Reisner didn't look right either.
I don't know if you saw on the interception, he tried to run.
He couldn't.
Yeah, I thought his knee exploded.
I thought whatever the like minor knee injury was suddenly became a major knee injury,
the way he came up, hobbled on that play.
Good as if finishing the game.
It'll be interesting to see on tape how he was moving.
Maybe that's part of why the run game looked defunct.
The left side of the offensive line also had issues again.
I'm definitely past a point of concern.
We haven't talked about this for a while with Orlando,
but like this game pushed me over the hump for Orlando Brown,
just with the consistent pressures that he's given up, something we'll talk about this week.
But let's talk about this defense a little bit too, because the areas of the field that we were worried about were promptly taken advantage of by Trevor Lawrence and the Jacksonville Jackwires.
Trevor in the middle of the field on intermediate throws was four for six for 68 yards between the numbers in the short part of the field, eight for nine for 89 yards.
That is 15 of his 23 attempts coming in the short to intermediate middle of the field at 10.5 per attempt at least.
I mean, that's a, that's huge.
Yeah, for, for, let's see, for, do I have it here?
No.
So in the intermediate, it was 11.1 and in the short, it was 9.9.
Yeah, so probably about 10.5, you're right.
The Bengals couldn't stop that middle of the field stuff.
And like, we knew there would be weak links today.
There was a drive where Barrett Carter or Barrett or Saw there.
Orrin Burs was out there for Demetrius Knight on one drive.
He got picked on the key for the key third down in the fourth quarter.
That's picking on Rustyast for practice squad safety, who's,
just in a very bad situation, manned up on a tight end from way off.
That's a tough spot for him to be in.
And outside leverage also.
And I didn't say that earlier.
Yeah, outside leverage.
So inside leverage for a slant and you try to drop a linebacker into it.
There's no way Barrett Carter's getting back there.
I didn't think Barry Carter was even bad.
He was.
Honestly, Knight also, they both had tackles for a loss.
I liked in the first quarter, Elgoin's like so much attention are spent on these
detackles.
Let's shoot the gaps.
And they were successful.
But the Bengals did not get enough pressure in this game.
It's not like the Jags ran the ball tremendously well,
especially with the benefit of some of these holding penalties,
erasing some huge plays for Jacksonville,
the way they erased at least one play for the Bengals,
probably multiple plays for the Bengals.
I'm thinking of the Smajai Piron touchdown,
but only pressuring Trevor Lawrence on 18% of his dropbacks,
as far as I can see here.
They do get a bunch of sacks out of it.
They convert four of them into sacks,
so four out of their five pressures converted into sacks.
And so we'll see what those pressure numbers are out.
It felt like more.
But you're right.
I can, if I'm thinking about it, it felt like more in my mind.
So, but as I'm replaying the ones I can remember, because I try to record plays as
are happening from the TV, they did all result in sex.
Next gen stats has a pressure rate for the Bengals at 40%.
So that's much higher.
So we'll have to see how this settles after we watch it.
So some disputing or some data sources in dispute here.
There were too many plays, though, where like,
Trevor Lawrence has a very clean pocket.
Like Joe Burroughs pressure rate in this game, not crazy,
according to the initial numbers that I saw.
And next-gen stats against Sumer has it at 38%.
And that's not good, but it's not insane.
Felt like Joe was taking hits a lot in this game.
Felt like Trevor was sitting in clean pockets a lot in this game.
And that's where like the offensive differences come up to,
the coaching differences on offense,
Liam Cohen putting his guys in better positions than Zach Taylor did in this game.
there are too many plays that, you know,
the defense gets Jacksonville behind the chains and it's not good enough to get
off the field because of tackling because they look slow at times,
especially in the middle of the field, right?
These guys look extremely stiff to me,
whether it's Warren Burke stopping his feet for a half a second and then letting
the lineback or the tight end run past him,
the safeties, of course,
of course you're going to have issues with Russ East and BJ Jules out there.
Although I thought Jules made a couple of tackles or other times,
some big runs, especially where I'm like,
Yeah, probably not a great angle.
And then Jordan Battle comes running straight up with his arms out.
And I'm just like, come on, guys.
The leash has to be extremely short on Jordan Battle once these other safeties are healthy, Jake.
It's got to be.
We cannot have these plays like this.
And then the corners, I don't know who you have to challenge to get more physical out there.
They need to take on these screens.
They need to take on these blockers.
And they take on the run game at a much better level than they currently are.
even the young guys that you think like DJ Ivy and Scario Davis, they should be fighting for playing time.
They should be fighting for that opportunity.
Show you can defend the run.
I don't think they know what they're doing at a high enough level to do it.
And then I'm watching DJ Turner and I'm like, come on, man.
I know you're not the biggest guy, but we're swimming here.
Or maybe we're not.
We're drowning here.
And then he gets a big pass interference call.
They didn't even attack the corners.
It's going to be an interesting thing to even watch on film because all we talked about was how good these receivers are, Jake.
And the Jack said, we don't even have to throw it to him.
Yeah, they haven't thrown to their tight ends all year.
And this was like, oh, yeah, it's going to be a Brenton Strange game.
I'm like, oh, maybe we'll see because they're not throwing to Brenton Strange very much.
But in this game, he leads their receiving room by a pretty large margin.
Overall, this, like I said, just a very frustrating game.
Jacksonville gets only 19 first downs in this game.
They're five of 11 on third down, which, like, you can kind of live with that.
And it's a game that, again, this is like an almost and an if.
So I don't want to go too far down this path.
But it's a game where, like, Jamar doesn't get hurt.
He doesn't get hurt.
Sure.
I feel probably way differently about how this would have gone, but that's not what happened.
And once again, we're talking about an almost game for the Bengals,
a situation where the Bengals come up short.
We'll be back a little bit later tonight for the Everydayer Club for Joe subscribers with a bit of a rewatch.
The squad show will be up next year on Locked on Bengals.
Until then, thanks for venting with us here on this postgame episode of the Locked on Bengals podcast.
We'll see you next time.
Thanks for listening and have a good book.
