The Cincinnati Bengals kicked off OTAs and everyone is present and accounted for.
And that's a bigger deal than you might think.
We're going to break down all the biggest takeaways from day one of OTAs.
You are locked on Bengals, your daily Cincinnati Bengals podcast.
Part of the Locked On Podcast Network, your team every day.
What up, Bengals fans and welcome to another episode of the Lockdown Bengals podcast.
He's Joe Gooberry.
I'm Jake Liscoe.
We're your host of the Lockdown, Bengals.
Bengals podcast, your daily one-stop shop for all things. Cincinnati Bengals and the Bengals opened up
OTA. Zach Taylor held a press conference today for the first time in a while as the Bengals are
starting the organized team activity part of the offseason program. The last few weeks have
technically been a ramp up process called phase one and phase two. And as OTAs go, it was actually
a pretty exciting day today because we got to see the DJ Turner was present. Jamar Chase is there.
Joe Flacco is out there taking staffs under center.
So we're going to get you all of the big takeaways from OTAs and Zach Taylor
as the Bengals had their open practice of the week today on Tuesday as we're recording.
And in the meantime, between last time and this time,
since the last time you heard from us, Miles Garrett was straight out of the division.
We haven't gotten a chance to talk about that yet.
So we're going to talk about that a little bit later in the show.
But Joe, we're going to start with the takeaways from today's OTA session
and Zach Taylor having some very, very,
positive things to say about DJ Turner and Jamar Chase, who haven't been around the team so
far in the offseason program. They're there now. As practices start to ramp up a little bit,
there's a little bit of actual competitive offense versus defense drills happening into Bengals
practice today. And DJ Turner getting the number change to zero was a topic that Zach Taylor
discussed during his presser today as well. I think it's a big story that everyone's there and the
vibes are high because it's been every year we've had something to talk about once OTAs arrive,
from Shamar Stewart to Trey Hendrickson, Jamar Chase, when he was trying to get his deal,
even to wondering when Joe Burrow would get his done, right?
And there was, Trey Hendrickson, multiple years, I should have said, but it's good.
Part of the reasons the vibes are high aren't just the moves they've made.
And every player's talked about, like, oh, that's a nice sign from the people upstairs that want to meet us
and I think Jemar said that they believe in us that we can take this team to the next level.
But that everyone is there and accounted for and everyone's locked in.
And yes, DJ Turner right away, Zach Taylor's press conference at the end of the practice,
I felt like he went out of his way.
Of course, people are asking him about DJ because he's there because he's not holding out
because he wants the extension.
But I thought Zach went out of his way to make sure people know that DJ is somebody
that is an integral part of this locker room, of this team,
calling him basically a leader and somebody that comes by every morning, says hello,
says good morning, and that because of what DJ has done on and off the field,
which this tidbit here shocked me, it's something small if you care about numbers.
Zach said, I allowed him to submit that request for number zero because he said he didn't
allow Jesse Bates and other players that have asked for in the past that Jesse wanted number three
and Zach turned it down.
I didn't know Zach had this type of power or control over this, you know, over numbers.
I thought that'd be a much bigger thing or maybe a small thing that he didn't even care about.
But no, he said it was up to him and he granted it for DJ Turner because of the player he is.
The classic head coach responsibility like high school sports.
You go to your head coach if you want a number, right?
And I guess that translates all the way up to the pros, at least for the Bengals.
I thought it was a really interesting tip bit as well that he called Jesse Bates and was like, hey, we're doing this.
But you warm me down.
DJ Turner's quote, according to Zach Taylor, was.
Jesse Walk so I could run in terms of wearing down Zach Taylor on the conversation to change numbers.
But the fact that DJ Turner is there, I think, is significant as he is working, I think, actively or hoping for an extension with the Cincinnati Bengals.
We will, we're planning to anyway, have Mike Petralia with us tomorrow to discuss what DJ had to say in the locker room as he met with reporters.
and we want to make sure we're bringing you that inside the locker room insight.
So we'll get to a little bit more of that tomorrow,
as we'll have more to get to from today's open practice.
So we won't get to everything that we want to today.
That'll be one of the topics of please into tomorrow.
And you mentioned it, Joe, the energy, the vibes being so high right now.
Try to remember the last time the team and the city felt this way at this point in the off season,
where it's not just Dexter Lawrence, you're right.
I think the arrival of all of these guys,
Jamar and DJ Turner getting there,
Joe Flacco, getting there,
elevating the energy even further,
according to Zach Taylor.
When's the last time we were sitting here in early June
feeling like, yeah, this is really feeling good right now
with no distractions and all that stuff
that you mentioned as well?
And this thing's really seeming to go in the right direction
heading into the season.
You know, I'd probably say 2022,
And Zach didn't mention, you know, multiple seasons ago and how the city is bought in and the team and all that.
But he didn't give a year either because he was asked this at this press conference.
And when he was asked, I thought in my mind, 2022, because we were coming off of 21, the Super Bowl run.
And it was like house money, right?
We were feeling great about everything that happened.
And hey, maybe they'll get back.
But yeah, that's, that is the vibe I'm getting now.
And it's probably why, or not why, it's probably helped by so many larger analysts.
saying the Bengals are due for a run or maybe the favorites in the AFC North.
I think that goes a long way as well.
But yeah, even on the field today, I thought everybody looked crisp, everyone looked sharp.
You know, there wasn't anything where we're expecting a guy coming back from injury.
We saw Eric L.
All running routes.
It looked like it should in June and even better.
I mean, there was big plays.
There was balls completed down the field.
There's under center offense, which we always talk about in the summer.
you come away at the number one or the practice that's open to the media not day one but the you know
today's practice and you go hmm you know this might be a year where we actually have something to
talk about in the summer in a positive light yeah no daily contract watch attendance watch
samar stewart not participating none of that this year with cash as hell whose contract still
isn't signed but hasn't been missing for any part of the process and so we're not really talking
about it because the contract will get done that's how these things work
There's no, there's never really a concern that Shamar's contract wasn't going to get done.
It was just kind of a, at some point, somebody started up a story about him thinking about going back to school because he's working out at A&M facilities and everything.
And so, like, that was a little bit weird.
But the contracts are always going to get done.
It would be an albatross, something incredibly rare for it not to occur.
So there's no real concern there.
The other thing that we're, I think, going to dive into a little bit more here over the next couple of days and weeks is, well, what's the direction?
for the under center part of the game.
And Zach was asked about it.
I thought his answer was interesting here
because it sounded to me like Zach still feels like under center
is like, yeah, it would be great if he could get under center
to finish games, which is not really the direction
that we exactly want to see the under center offense go.
Like, Justin Rascati just talked to Jeff Hobson for Bengals.com
about this as well.
And that conversation was more of like marrying the past game
and the run game and finding that direction under center
is what I would like to see the best.
the Bengals do.
And if part of that is like, yeah, now we can go under center and we can run it as part of our
one, two, three, part of our main pitches to go to, then you can close the game there and
you're not going out of your comfort zone to try to finish games under center, which they were
able to do in some of those Joe Mixing years.
You can remember some games where they pounded the rock with Joe Mix and finish games,
but it's been a while.
And so finding a way to get more comfortable with that, I think in the regular flow of the
game, in addition to being able to use it to close out games as a direction I would like to
see it go. But with Joe Flacco out there in particular, it was Joe Flacco clips that I saw
anyway. There was a lot of under center turning your back to the defense, play action kind of stuff,
and some of the offense versus defense walk through drills they were doing. Yeah, and I thought
that was almost offensive in his response there. Like, yeah, we'll get under center. We need a
lead. We need to be ahead, right? And that makes sense. And I did think of like that Raiders game that I
just blurted out while you're speaking in the Titans game and the playoffs. And there were moments where
they really tried to lean on that run to...
I mean, they even tried to do it in the Super Bowl, if I recall correctly.
Yeah, they probably should have thrown a little bit more in the Super Bowl, you know,
in that fourth quarter, but I don't want to talk about the game.
I was almost jumping.
I was open to analyzing that one.
We don't need to do that.
But yeah, that was interesting to me because there are a lot of answers you can give
for why they do so much under center in the summer, and it doesn't always translate to the fall.
But he didn't.
He just said, we'll do it when.
the game script allows basically.
We've got a lot of alignment notes and participation notes that I want to get to today
because that's some of the stuff that really interests Joe and I, like,
where's Samar Stewart lining up?
What's Cassius Howell doing?
Who's playing slot corner?
Where's Jack Andrews?
Some of the stuff that we talked about yesterday,
we got a glimpse at some of those answers and some of what we were able to see from
practice on Tuesday.
And Eric All participating, I want to make sure we cover what Zach Taylor had to say about
the plan for ramping Eric All.
back up because I thought that was an interesting answer as well as they're easing him back into
the process. We'll cover some of those notes coming up next. This episode of lockdown Bengals is

vacations, long days, more time outside in nice weather, more plans with family, with friends. But for a
lot of people, summer can also feel surprisingly overwhelming. Schedules can get full really quickly. Routines
can change and sometimes it feels like you're trying to do everything at once instead of just
enjoying the nice weather and the season and that's why it's important to make time for yourself
too and therapy can help you create a vision of summer that feels manageable and enjoyable

As you said, Jake, many of the personnel alignment depth chart things that you can see the
first day, that's what gets me excited.
As soon as we start seeing clips posted on X and on Twitter from the beat that's there
to see all this, I instantly start saving those videos in slow motion and just,
okay, who is this?
Who's that?
What number is this guy?
Oh, that guy looks a little thicker than before.
He looks stronger.
Whatever I can pull from it, because that's all we get for evaluation purposes.
but I thought there were a lot of interesting notes,
especially on the defensive side of the ball.
And one of them that we talked about before we started recording is Joe notices even
Zach Taylor looking a little bit more.
I did.
I just wanted to get the joke off there.
Keep talking about some of the things that stood out to you as you were watching
the defensive alignment.
So the first thing I wanted to see is how much three, four stuff would we see
or how much would it be the four three over under stuff where you're going to bring
a linebacker down to the line of scrimmage the way they were doing it with Demetris
Knight, right?
So a little bit of a distinction there.
And there was still, after practice, some of the beat writers were saying that they saw Mafei and Howell both at an outside linebacker alignment.
And I wanted to know if that was more of a three, four outside linebacker.
Is it, like I said, over under, or is it just straight up?
This guy's playing outside linebacker in a four three defense.
From the clips we saw, it was a bit of both.
We saw one where Shaka Hayward went down to the defensive end, outside line.
linebacker edge spot in an over front.
And if you're trying to imagine what that would be,
imagine like Jermaine Pratt playing as a part of the attached surface a few years ago.
Demetrius Knight was doing this last year,
something that we've talked about a lot where you've got four defensive
linemen with their hands down or maybe Trey Hendrickson on the other side has his hand up
or maybe it's hand up.
I guess that doesn't really matter.
But there's another player who's traditionally an offball linebacker like Demetrius,
like Jermaine Pratt, who is walked down and is directly over, say, a tight end
or on the outside shoulder of a tackle as part of the defensive surface.
And a lot of times you'll see the defensive line almost shift over one technique.
So you'll see Shamar Stewart go from D-N to almost a three tech spot.
And then the linebacker comes and replaces the defensive end there.
So to help visualize that.
So we saw that.
And then we did see a couple more plays of them in a real three-four front
with both edge guys on the line of scrimmage and three defensive tackles.
Sometimes it was two defensive tackles in Shamar Stewart as the one.
and a lot of stuff to pick through from that.
Yeah, I think the Shamar Stewart alignment stood out to me significantly
because he's consistently playing inside.
And nickel looks and three down,
and the three, four looks that you're talking about as well.
They're using him as kind of a three, four end,
who's going to play some three tech, maybe five tech,
in some of the four down linemen looks,
the four defensive linemen looks in nickel packages.
So I'm sure he's still getting some base run and base four, three kind of stuff.
outside when they will go to that and I'm sure they will still have some of that in their
defensive arsenal but it seems like at least for now early in OTAs right and a small sample of
the plays that actually happened today there appeared to be a pretty significant emphasis on the
Bengals getting something from Shemar Stewart inside with Boye Maffe and Miles Murphy playing outside
and Shemar's working a lot with the twos as well so he's out there a lot with Cassius Howell and with
you know,
Cedric Johnson will be,
or yeah,
subject Johnson,
right?
Yeah,
Cedric Johnson,
the other end with,
you know,
Land of Robinson's out there
in some of these looks as well
and some of the three,
four looks and sneaking on the field
because you can hardly see him
because he's 511,
but he's out.
No joke.
That's what happened on one clip
as I was sharing it with subscribers on Twitter.
Jake said he's watching and he's like,
I don't see Lana Robinson.
Where is he?
And then he kind of squeaks out
between the two big defensive tackles next to him.
But yeah,
thinking of Sharma,
Samar and Landon Robinson on the field together, as they're mixing some threes and four units in there, I would love to see Antoine and Paul Rylind get a shot with those guys if Cedric Johnson's already getting a shot.
Because you've got to think at that point, if we're already at defensive end number five, whether that's Johnson or Shramar Stewart, you may want to keep six.
You may want to go a little heavier with that position, especially if they're going to use them as much as they are with the deputy they may have this year.
And I wonder if Powell Rylund is in that conversation or if he's more in the Cashus Howell conversation,
where it seems like Hal is consistently, I think if there's a guy that's going to drop into coverage
and be more of that like three, four outside linebacker, like old school style, he's going to drop into coverage,
you know, five to seven snaps a game.
If the Bengals were full time, you know, think Dick LaBow Steelers kind of outside linebackers
where they're a little bit more hybrid players.
Like that seems to be Cassius.
That seems more like Antoine Powell Rylans, Cup of Tea and his style if he actually has a legitimate shot of competing here because I know he's one of your guys going back to the draft sheet when he was coming out.
Didn't really get an opportunity to get on the field for the Bengals a whole lot, if at all last year.
And so we'll see how much of a chance he really has to compete.
But the packages in alignment for Shamar Stewart for Cassius Howell, interesting.
and I think the slot corner conversation appears to be a competition between Jaseer Taylor and Jalen Davis right now.
And both of those guys got work in the slot with the ones and the twos or the twos and the ones respectively.
Jaseer Taylor with the two's, Jailen Davis with the ones for now.
I expect that that will be a competition that will get into the summer and late into the summer,
assuming the Bengals don't make a move there, which at this point I'm not really expecting them to unless it's,
is like Dalton Riser again last year where they get to training camp.
They're like, ah, we're not really comfortable with these options.
Let's see what else we can do to bolster the room.
I think that seems to be the direction that competition is going.
Yeah, and if you're wondering where Tukario Davis fits into that,
he was with the twos on the outside.
DJ Turner Dex hit with the ones on the outside.
So if something develops, maybe Ticario looks really good in OTAs
and then in the summer in camp,
and then maybe the idea that Dax could play more slot,
because people have brought that up,
As of now, that is not what's happening.
So maybe we see it develop.
It gives us a good start point today to see if anything emerges as training camp happens.
Let's talk about the tight ends a little bit as well as we have some notes on those guys today.
Eric Al continues to work in non-contact settings.
Zach Taylor said that that is a plan for now as they're ramping him back up.
But I thought that it was a pretty fun description of Eric Al from Zach Taylor.
The love for the game that he has a physicality aspect to the game.
And you can see that with the way that they used him
and the way that he played football
when he was on the field for them as a rookie
and they put him in all those roles as a blocker.
But it was good to see him out there moving well,
running hard.
Yeah, I think that it's a promising look
that hopefully they might be able to get something
from Eric all this year.
But it sounds like it will be a little bit slow going for him
in terms of the amount of contact that he is taking on.
Is they're going to bring him along
and make sure that he's good to go?
We'll see what that looks like.
sounded to me like it's going to be a slower plan there.
We got a little bit of a look at Jack Endries today too.
He was out there in a two tight end look with the twos
along with Cam Grandi,
where he was attached to the line of scrimmage,
but he was a second offset outside tight end.
We also saw him in motion from outside
and a little bit of return motion on a different play.
So Jack Endry's getting a little bit of positional versatility here early on,
getting some rest with Joe Flacco.
Nice to see him out there.
I would assume it's like the threes at tight ends if he's out there with Cam Grandi at that point.
But I remain bullish on Jack Hendries despite the alignment with the three today, Joe.
Yeah, I would think the number two, if all's not out there right now with the 11 on 11s or even maybe even seven on sevens,
I would think the number two tight ends are Cam Grady and Jack Endries.
And I'm saying that because I see Hudson is more of a backup to Kaseki where he's in the slot move type of goal.
Yeah.
Yeah. The tight end room has very defined rules.
And that's why I'm so hopeful for injuries and all,
if all can get back to give them a little bit more versatility at that position.
Because right now, and every day, I've heard us talk about this a bunch over the years.
You got the Hudson pairing for depth with Mike Keseki.
You've got the Drew sample, Cam Grandi, kind of tight end.
And then you're hopefully going to have Eric Al and Jack Endries as the different type of
more versatile tight end.
We did not get to the backup offensive line alignment today.
I would like to talk about that.
We'll make sure that we discuss that at some point here in the next couple of days.
Brian Parker, very interesting use for him to start.
We'll talk a little bit about who's out there at the swing tackle spots,
who's competing for the backup tackle job right now.
And it doesn't appear to be Brian Parker who seems to be getting work on the interior for now.
So those will be some notes in addition to others that we didn't get to today,
as we'll have more from OTAs to talk about tomorrow.
But Miles Garrett is no longer in the AFC North,
and we didn't get to talk about it on yesterday's episode
because we had finished recording right before the trade happened.
Well, we're going to discuss that a little bit now
because it feels good that he's not at least playing for the Browns.
But Jared Verst is a pretty good player too.
We'll discuss that trade and the impact on the Bengals coming up next.

Miles Garrett is no longer Cleveland Brown, Joe.
And while he goes to the Los Angeles Rams and Aaron Donald apparently is contemplating,
returning from retirement.
And we can think about the nightmare scenario of having to face those two guys in a Super Bowl
because that is the only time the Bengals would play the Rams.
this year and discuss and fantasize about that potential eventuality,
the Bengals no longer have to deal with Miles Garrett when they played the Cleveland
Browns. And of all the thorns and the Bengals side that came along with playing the Cleveland
Browns over the years, whether it was the wide zone game and Nick Chub and the great
offensive lines they had, the Bengals never seemed to have an answer for Baker Mayfield
putting up some of his best career games against the Cincinnati Bengals in that same offense,
the cornerbacks that have given the Bengals issues over the,
over the years. It was all brought together by Miles Garrett. That guy's an alien. He's one of one.
He is the best to do it at his position in the NFL and it's not particularly close.
And now the Bengals don't have to deal with him the two times they play the Browns.
And there's Jared Verse there instead and that guy's pretty good too. He's no slouch.
It's also not Miles Garrett. And I think that the matchup was particularly bad for Orlando
Brown stylistically as well. Not that there's a good matchup for Miles Garrett. But his job, I think,
get much harder in the NFC with some of the tackles he'll be facing there.
That'll be really fun to watch for people who just love football,
the Trent Williams- Miles Garrett matchups twice a year.
That's going to be awesome.
But more awesome than that for Bengals fans is that Miles is no longer in the AFC North.
What a relief.
Man, I couldn't be more excited.
And I've always been a fan of Miles Garrett.
How can't you be?
Like, he's just watching LeBron.
Young LeBron just dominate by being such a physical freak.
That was watching Miles Garrett.
And we can talk positively about him now because he's gone.
We got to have before because we respected it as NFL fans.
But, man, what a nightmare it was to deal with him every year, twice a year.
We don't have to see that anymore.
And it just, I mean, the Brown's got compensation.
Jared Verst is a good player.
He has 157 pressures and 14 sacks in his first two years.
They've got back-to-back rookie of the years now, right?
It was Jared Verst and then Harrison Sweatinger.
That is a good thing for them.
They get a first round pick.
They're trying to reset.
They need those picks to get a quarter.
quarterback. All of that said, they are worse this year than they were two days ago. And that
makes me happy because you look at what could have happened in this AFC North. I mean, at one point,
Max Crosby, Miles Garrett, we could have been worried about all of these guys and it didn't happen.
Crosby's gone or didn't ever happen. And then Miles Garrett's gone and that is a relief.
It is a relief. And Miles was a tear against the Bengals almost always. They actually did a pretty good job on him
in week one last year.
I thought he didn't make as much noise.
He was dealing with some stuff all year last year, too,
with the chronic foot and ankle,
foot and or ankle.
He still got the record against us.
Yeah.
Well, we don't have to talk about that.
What was interesting, though, as you mentioned,
the compensation.
So I do just want to shout out Brandon Thorne,
who does great work on the true pressure rate,
true sack rate,
where he charts all of these guys
and watches them individually to document
whether it's a low-quality win, a cleanup win, a high-quality win,
or something he calls a rare high-quality win,
which is a high-quality win against somebody he considers an elite tackle.
So if you beat Trent Williams cleanly or you beat Tristan Wirth's cleanly,
you're getting a rare high-quality win in Brandon Thorne's book.
And he puts all that together into a formula,
and he comes up with a true sack rate and a true pressure rate.
And last year, Jared Verse was fifth in true pressure rate.
according to Brandon Thorne, behind just Will Anderson, Josh Hines, Allen, Aidan Hutchinson, and Micah Parsons,
ahead of Daniel Hunter, Chris Jones, Abdul Carter, Jalen Phillips, Miles Garrett,
Jeffrey Simmons, Zach Allen, Nick Benito, George Carl Laftus, who is much higher on this list than I would have thought,
and Kobe Turner, who also plays for the Los Angeles ramp.
So I think that's interesting.
And I'm not saying that I think Jared versus is going to be as good as Miles Garrett or be as impactful as Miles Garrett,
but it is worth noting that he is another young piece that is going into a defense that,
like you mentioned, still has Carson Swessinger, who is coming off of a rookie of the year campaign.
And Mason Graham, who is a highly touted interior defensive line prospect, who you can presume
will have something of a second year leap.
So the Browns are reloading, and we'll have to look out for that in the future, I think,
more than this year, like you said, is they're trying to accumulate draft picks.
Everybody's trying to get draft picks for 2027.
and nobody wanted to trade future picks this year to try to move up in the draft.
Well, the Browns have managed to pick up a 2027 first in a class as expected to have some quarterbacks in it.
And so that'll be a long-term thing for the Browns, but at least for this year, you feel so much better about those Browns matchups.
When even if it is still a good player in Jaredverse, it's not Miles Garrett out there.
That's right.
And as we're wrapping the show here, I just wanted to bring up the quote that Zach Taylor had on Eric, all.
because you mentioned it, but we didn't get to it.
He said, if you look up the word physical in the dictionary,
there would be a picture of Eric OLL.
He just wants to run through your face and your chest.
There you go.
That's, yeah, exactly what I was referencing earlier today.
The play of the day as well, we can talk about today
as we're wrapping up the talk on OTAs was T. Higgins on a back shoulder,
hands catch, reaching back away from his body,
just barely beating Dax Hill and a seven-on-seven rep.
You'll see that on social media for sure.
Yeah, if you just look at social media, it's out there.
easy to find. And that was a fun play
today. We're hoping to have Mike Petralia
with us tomorrow. We're still working on some scheduling details
there. So we'll see
whether we can put that together
with our schedules aligning tomorrow
or not to get you that on field
and in the locker room insight from
him. And that is our
plan for the next episode of Lockdown
Bengals. Until then, thanks
for listening to this episode of the
Lockdown Bengals podcast.
Hootin. And have a good one.
