The Cincinnati Bengals spent their biggest offseason chip on Dexter Lawrence.
So without a first round pick, how does that shake things up for the Bengals for the rest of the draft,
which will now start for them on Friday?
Let's break it down.
You are Locked on Bengals, your daily Cincinnati Bengals podcast.

What up, Bengals fans, and welcome to another episode of the Lockdown Bengals podcast.
He's James Rapine.
I'm Jake Liscoe.

Today, we will eventually get to the Bengals number changes that they announced shortly before James and I sat down to start recording this episode.
But the focus for today is how does the draft change now that the Bengals don't have a first round pick, now that the Bengals have Dexter Lawrence on the team,
and there are reports that the Bengals were considering Peter Woods
and that option, if things broke a certain way,
thinking that they might have to pick a player
and other reports that they had graded as a mid-to-late first-round player,
that would line up with the idea that they thought they might have to take Peter Woods at 10
and said they trade that pick for Dexter Lawrence.
And James, now we start looking at round two, round three
and thinking about where the talent might be in alignment with what the Bengals would like to do
with those picks and how that's going to shake out in the aftermath of the Dexter Lawrence Strait.
Yeah, that's, it's so much different now navigating.
I mean, a top 10 pick, you can play out 52 different scenarios and it's probably going to be
one of like seven different ones.
Realistically, with this, you could say, oh, well, this corner is going to be there or this
linebacker is going to be there.
Or man, edge rusher, you never know.
Is defensive tackle still a thing?
probably not at this point you have a huge investment there but there's still a lot of
i wonder though because if if they were willing to draft peter woods 10th in some scenarios
what if peter woods is there 41 what do you do and for sure and maybe it is i i've told you like the
kela banks thing like is is is he 20th on their board and cleared medically and one of those guys
and by the way i didn't i didn't tell you this but i do have that clip of of brian brink's
Rodis that mentioned the Peter Wood scenario.
And it's, it would have made me sick if they picked him at 10.
But if he's there at 41 and he's 20th on their board, can you ignore that?
Like, it's still the same logic.
The draft player is not positions element.
And it's more likely that a player in the top 25 on your board is there at 41 than a
player at the top two on your board is there at 10.
It's just how it works, how the draft is, and how the evaluations
could differ, needs differ.
So, yeah, I mean, it wouldn't shock me if defensive tackles in play.
They've had so much defensive tackle thirst for so many years.
It's not like they're young at that position anyway.
It would be interesting, though, if they went defensive tackle essentially at 10
and then defensive tackle again at 41.
I wonder about roster spots at that point, because if the five guys are going to be
Lawrence, assuming they keep Slaten, Slayton, and nose tackle, and then you've got
it.
And maybe that's hit.
it could be it's something that they maybe explore trade options maybe they just keep them maybe they
just say we want to have a great backup nose tackle and t j slayton we want that slayton lawrence
package for certain situations so we're going to keep slayton uh but we'll see what they what they do
in that one but then for the other three guys you're going to have bj hill jonathan allen those guys
for sure and they're not cutting chris jenkins you have to really be a screw up for the bengals
to cut you if you're a premium pick they one day two pick
And Chris Jenkins is not in that category as far as I know.
So McKinley Jackson would be on the fringe.
And if there are injuries, you know, you see what happens there in training camp.
And that forces you to do certain things.
But like you had another player to that mix.
They keep in six defensive tackles.
That's where it gets difficult to project them spending a premium pick now on a defensive tackle in the aftermath of this trade.
You could probably take that off the list day one day two, probably.
But again, if they were this high on Peter Wood, that's why I asked a question.
You know, if they're willing to go as high as 10 and he's there at 41, does that complicate things?
Yeah.
And the reason you're mentioning this is Brian Bratis was on the Jeff Kavanaugh show on YouTube and was like they were talking because the Cowboys, it's a Cowboys show.
Jeff covers the Cowboys.
The Cowboys have the 12th pick and the 20th pick.
Well, the 12th pick is really close to 10.
And whether or not it was beneficial that the Giants now are drafting 10th overall, Dallas has a need on defense as well.
and Brian, well, he brought quite an interesting take.
Here's Intel for you, Jeff.
Here's Intel for you.
They were going to reach on Peter Woods.
They were going to take Peter Woods at 10.
Intel was telling me that Cincinnati was going to reach on a defensive tackle.
Whether or not it's true, we could debate.
We don't need to.
The Bengals traded for Dexter Lawrence.
But if Peter Woods is there at 41 and they were potentially considering it at 10,
you're right, why wouldn't they be in on this guy at 41?
The roster crunch is like we talked about.
That would be the thing, right?
Like they've spent the asset on Dexter Lawrence.
So do they have, it could be one of those things where they love the player,
but they don't feel like they had the roster spot for him at this point, you know?
And they, we saw them last year kind of do this where they didn't have a guard.
And based on what we knew about their board, they kind of pivoted and said,
yeah, we're going to get a guard in round three.
and then they look up and I guess I may be spoiling something,
but I think Barrett Carter was ahead of,
why am I forgetting his name?
Dylan Fairchild.
Del and Fairchild, yeah, sorry.
I was thinking about Demetrius Knight because Carter was in that mix,
but Barrett Carter was round two grade.
I think he was ahead of Dylan Fairchild on their overall board.
But you're right, roster crunch needs all of those things.
Like you can go that route.
And so, yeah, it's just,
when's the next player if they really were in on Peter Woods?
And it wouldn't shock me if they were.
They've had that defensive tackle thirst.
At the same time, corner, linebacker,
if they don't address either of those spots at 41,
that's definitely going to be the,
oh, well, what are they going to do at linebacker?
Who's going to be there?
What are they going to do at corner?
DJ now with a new number,
Dax, both in contract years,
obviously that nickel spot is a need as well.
I wonder if that DJ Turner number change portends an extension that is coming.
A lot of times these number changes are tied to extensions.
I'm just saying.
He said add another blank to your offer and maybe it'll get it.
There you go.
We will talk about those number changes like we said later in the show.
We spend a lot of time here leading the show with a talk about defensive tackle
because of the Peterwood story.
And I think that's fascinating to Brian brought us quote or clip that we played.
And Bradus isn't just some guy.
Like, this is a deeply connected man to the NFL.
In part of that video, he talked about how he used to call Duke Tovin around the draft.
You're like, hey, we're open for business.
And Duke would be like, all right, have a good draft.
Talking about the Bengals' lack of interest generally in moving around.
I still think that there were a number of players ahead of Peter Woods for the Bengals,
and that aligns with other reporting.
And they just didn't think those guys were going to fall to them.
And so that will be fascinating to watch a tent is who is actually available when that 10th pick comes around.
There's obviously a butterfly effect to some degree.
Like maybe Dallas doesn't feel like they have to trade up to go target a guy.
They thought the Bengals were going to pick.
Maybe that's something that happens now while we're on the topic of Dallas.
Because the Bengals were pretty well projected.
They wanted one of those defensive players.
And so maybe there's a team that thought we would have to trade up.
And now they're thinking, oh, the Giants will pick Jordan Tyson.
And that's all the hype this week, Jordan Tyson and the top 10.
10. But you talked about corner linebacker.
Really hard to imagine right now for me, James.
So Bengals pick in the second round not addressing the secondary or the linebacker position
based on how we thought this offseason.
Come on.
Trenchman wants a weapon.
Yeah, he can't say Jeremiah love anymore.
So you got to talk about guys that are going to be available in the second round.
He can't fall.
he can't fall to 41 he can't i'm sorry i'm sorry
they're a dream james
i wish we can talk about what we think that second round priority is going to be
with the way that we're talking about players that we expect to be there
and honestly that's where it points even more to me to linebacker and and corner
and there are some exceptions it's not just those two spots but when you think about the
players that are expected to be available when the bengals are on the clock at 41 and
what we think they need to do, what they feel like they need to do, what you would expect them to do.
And they do draft for need.
Don't get me wrong on this.
They do draft for need.
We saw it last year like we talked about.
So let's talk about those round two potential scenarios here, the positions of players they might target after the Dexter Lawrence trade coming up next.

Jake, we talked about this before the Lawrence trade.
And this, so this is when defensive tackles very much in play at 41.
And how likely it was that pick 41 was going to be a defender.
Because if they go corner round one, you could have seen safety round two.
You could have seen defensive tackle round two.
If they didn't go corner round one, you could have seen corner round two.
Obviously, linebacker, huge need.
And with the way the board should play out,
I assume there's going to be a linebacker or two that they're interested in,
a corner or two that could potentially make it there.
I'm more worried about corner, by the way.
I wonder if they'll be picked through.
I wonder how picky they are if they want a guy.
Usually they do with inside,
outside flex,
not just a nickel only,
especially that early.
Maybe I'm wrong on that,
but it's going to be interesting to see how they navigate it,
especially if they don't want to go defensive tackle
in its linebacker corner edge.
But I forgot edge until just now.
Like defensive players,
it should be multiple guys near
or at the top of their board at Pick 41.
And I wonder if there's one safety,
if Emmanuel McNeil Warren,
who is being discussed today as a guy
who could get there in the second round?
Like, is that where they pivot
and go safety?
Let's go.
They have added to that spot.
And since they added Brian Cook,
we've, yeah, no doubt.
It's probably a good pick, right?
He was expected to go late first for a lot of this process or even midfirst at some points.
But we've talked about the Bengals, sometimes when they invest big money in a position,
Brian Cook for safety is huge money, especially for that.
They don't necessarily like to go invest premium assets in that as well.
They might use a later pick on a safety, but I have a hard time projecting a safety in the second round,
unless it's maybe a manual vignal war.
That would be the one exception where you can see them maybe if they really like
I'm going that route.
But it's got to be a defensive player now, right?
Like the world in which there was an offensive player possibly,
like say an offensive lineman in the second round,
who they think can develop into a right guard of the future,
center of the future, whatever it is,
one of those interior offensive linemen spots of the future and be a backup this year
or a swing tackle who they can develop for the future.
Swing tackle.
Yeah, that would be the one that I would think maybe.
I think that was more likely.
when we were expecting a defensive player to be picked 10.
Because then they could say, well, we got a guy,
and you can say they added Dexter Lawrence, sure.
But then they could say, well, we got a young player at 10,
we got a young cost control building block at 10.
And now we can maybe get an offensive piece and go back to defense third round.
Now, really hard for me to talk myself into them going with an offensive option in the second round.
I mean, I know they've added Lawrence, but like they still have an addressed linebacker.
They still haven't a dress corner.
They still haven't added that additional piece.
We think they want it edge.
So like where you could have projected one of those guys to be drafted in the first round,
now they're not going to add at one of those spots at this point.
Yeah.
Well, because think about all the positions you named at 10,
we weren't talking Peter Woods at 10.
We weren't talking defensive tackle at 10, obvious reasons.
Yeah.
Month and months ago, sure.
But.
And I agree with you, by the way.
I don't think Peter Woods was really in consideration at 10.
Maybe not.
Maybe we're way off.
I don't think so, but.
He was like the, oh crap, this is what we're going to have to do, which is what, again,
why I think they made the trade.
Yeah, for sure.
And it was a take it or leave it scenario based on the reporting.
They were like either we're going to hunker down and knock out our top 10 list this week
and draft or we're going to go get our guy in sexy dexy, which is a lot of fun.
I think everybody's excited about it.
But yeah, I think it's tough because of the uncertainty with DJ and Dax.
You haven't addressed linebacker at all.
And I know Al Golden set up, he talked about Demetrius Knight for like three minutes.
That doesn't mean that the Bengals don't want to add a lineback.
I think they really do.
They're not going to force it.
And that leaves them in a tough spot.
It puts Al Golden in a tough spot to ask about a couple guys on the team for the next three years right before the draft, too.
they clearly wanted to add at that spot in free agency.
Yeah, and they want to in the draft.
But 40 players have to go.
Like, if you told them that Rodriguez and Golda are both going to be there at 41,
and insert who are maybe it's CJ Allen,
I think they probably take one of those guys.
I don't know exactly who.
Maybe we will by draft night when it comes around.
But as of now, like, they're working on that now and figuring that out exactly what
fits, how it fits, how they should approach it.
And they're also playing out, okay, well, here are the linebackers that could be here in
round three and be available.
Here are the corners that could be there in round three.
And what are they looking for at linebacker?
Because just because there are a bunch of guys in the beast, right?
And Dan Brugler's draft guide or a bunch of guys that you think that they should target on
day two at this position or that position.
Well, maybe it's only half of that because this player doesn't meet what they're looking
for is in a right fit or they don't like this or there's a medical red flag that we don't know
about like there's a lot of factors that we won't know that could cross some of these guys out
and so that'll be interesting to see their approach hopefully we find out exactly what it is
i do hope you know this about me that's why i got excited about mcneill warren if a stud falls
like you name them i'm in if mccoy is there assuming that it's not some crazy thing where
he's literally never going to be able to play.
Goodness gracious.
Can you imagine him at 41?
Like that sounds great.
Sounds a little scary with him specifically.
Like he might fall into the second round because they're saying he might need another
surgery, like might not play this year.
And does he?
Like can you can you?
Well, yeah, that's a question for the Bengals and their medical team, right?
But like can they afford to take that risk if he's an error call situation where like
there's a bad surgery, there's a bad surgical outcome and he needs to go get that fixed,
you know, and can't play for a year.
Can you afford to take that?
do that at two in the second round.
I don't think you can't.
I, well, if he needs another surgery, then now you're like, deck stacked against
this guy who hasn't been healthy since he's 19 and played in two and a half.
You have to just fast forward another year.
And it's a much different conversation.
So, yeah, I mean, that's way different.
That, to me, would be, like, medically failing him and not much different than, oh, he's,
he's sliding.
Like, if you think.
he can give you five years that's different for sure then fine well because there's that longevity
report out there and it's like well longevity he's got to be good first even worry about like that's a
great problem to have that's the the real issue yeah those are at 41 no doubt if you're if you're
worried about like arthritis being an issue for him that's going to cause his career to be cut short
versus he needs another surgery because there's an issue with cartilage or something right now
then different different thing but like there's a reason that you're talking about him falling to the
second round after we were talking about him being a potential like the guy that made the most sense
at 10 i think he was i think he was it i think he's ahead of peter woods on their board well
prior to the medicals like we don't know what the medicals say we don't i i i said what i said now again
you're you're right i don't know but i think like in likelihood in in the world where the bengals
have the 10th pick that woods would be lower than
McCoy today, but they don't have the 10th pick, so I'm not sure it matters.
So let's talk about some of the names for the second round, some of the guys that could
fall, some of the guys that could be likely targets. And then how does that shape things out for
the rest of the draft? Now, again, not having that first round pick instead adding a proven
commodity index for loan. It's not like they added nothing. They do add a significant player
there, but no first round pick now and how that might have a knock on effect and how that might
change our expectations for what the Bengals might do in this draft. We'll finish the show
with that and number changes coming up.
Numbers.

By the way, Jake, they do have some new odds.
The sexy dexy odds is what they're calling them now
at Fandul.com. The Bengals plus 190 to win the
AFC North that getting a boost. It's been plus 250 plus
230. It's bounced around in the mid-toes. But getting a bit
of a bump slightly behind the Baltimore Ravens at minus 120. But
clearly ahead of the Steelers, clearly ahead of the Browns. The
Bengals consider the second best team in the north and
have the second best odds to win that division. If you're looking

We're getting to the point, James,
where the consensus board is more or less finalized.
And it might be,
there might be some small tweaks between now and the draft.
But the consensus board as we track it,
has these players in the range that if they're fallers,
these are guys that would be fallers,
if they were available to the Bengals,
and then some guys that we'll talk about
that could be potential target.
So fallers would be guys like Peter Woods
like we talked about, but T.J. Parker
from Clemson,
name that if he falls,
I would circle for the Bengals.
Avion Terrell, if he falls all the way
into the second round, all the way to 41,
I think that's the guy, the Bengals are target,
and he might be a guy that projects
best of the slot in the NFL.
So I think that's interesting.
Chris Johnson, who I think has
a lot of late first rounds
steam right now. If he's there, I think that's a great candidate for the Bengals at 41.
Colton Hood, again, projected to go at that turn first, second round. If he's there,
awesome pick. DeAngelo Pons finishes 37th in our consensus board. I think that's quite interesting.
Do the Bengals see him as a guy that can play outside at his size in the NFL? That'll be the
question. But a player that comes out extremely strong in our process, great productivity, has that
dog in him. You know what I mean? Like great athleticism would be a really fun one.
CJ Allen, you mentioned, but then the other linebackers had that we're getting into the range of
more of the expected draft position at 41. The Zion Young, Malichide Lawrence, Jacob Rodriguez,
R. Mason Thomas, Gabe Accus, Jake Golda, set of players. And not really a corner there.
Brandon Cese is the corner in this range that I think would be in play.
But if one of those other corners falls, I think that's where the Bengals would go to corner.
If you can't get a corner in the second round, I think it does dry up.
There are a couple guys that you might like after that.
But corner to me feels like unless there's a guy they love, the corner faller is probably the ideal scenario for them in the second round right now.
Yeah, I got most excited when you said Chris Johnson, which I think it's really unrealistic.
But would love it.
That's why I mentioned McCoy, because I do think that if there's some scenario where he's, he's flagged by some of these teams, but the Bengals don't have a flag on him, they may say, hey, let's go.
Let's see if we can do it, and especially if they don't think he needs another surgery.
So, yeah.
Yeah, there are a lot of paths.
The ideal one might be corner in round two.
And a guy that has some flexibility that gives you, like, key depth.
And I'm not sure we can obviously revisit this after the draft.
The draft is just a few days away.
I'm not sure there are a ton of Eli Apple types that you're like, all right, well, this guy
could come in and give you some stability.
I haven't looked a ton, but you do start to let your mind wander a little bit.
Like if they don't address edge, there are a couple guys that would make sense if they
wanted to go that route.
If they don't address linebacker, there's a couple, but it doesn't feel great.
It feels like they do need to get a linebacker at some point.
but the bottom really does drop out of corner.
And especially if they aren't in on the ponds is of the world, the nickels only.
And that's probably what he projects to be.
But I like him.
And put that out there because he is a baller.
And I like that you put it that way.
And sometimes it's okay that you don't fit the right measurables if you are a baller.
And I do think that it would be one of those things where people would question him
and then he'd get on the field and wherever he goes that's going to happen and he's going to make
plays and he's going to be in the right spots and do the things that defense his coaches ask him to do
and be a a winning player which obviously matters he plays with incredible physicality for his size
but like like usually he's all guys too yeah and you see that with mike hilton right but he also
has the the juice like incredible athleticism to go along with it the other corners if you're
talking about a guy falling to the third round like Keith
Adney right now from Arizona State
is 65th on consensus that would
be your third round target at corner
Davis and David Nossum
from Ohio State is
I think a very divisive player but if you're talking
about a third round potential
corner that is a name
that stands out there
Chandler Rivers more of a slot guide
Jalen Kilgore
is probably more of a safety
for a lot of teams but played a lot of
slot recently for South Carolina
So those will be like your third round options.
But the third round linebacker,
you're probably hoping for Jake Golda to fall.
He's consensus 55,
but depending on where you look,
he's anywhere from solid second round to mid third round.
And then Josiah Trotter will be the other one,
67 by consensus.
So you'd be asking for him to fall a little bit into the third round.
That's what makes it tough to think about day two
because they might not get the linebacker to fall to day three.
They might not feel like there's a linebacker they love in in the third round of the draft
unless they're considering guys like J. Sean Barham,
part of the solution.
Like if they're categorizing him as a linebacker, like hybrid kind of player,
then the options open up a little bit.
But I wonder how that affects their thinking.
It's definitely hard for me, James.
When I'm thinking about because our next episode is the last one before the draft
trying to do a predictive mock here, like it's really hard for me to say like,
all right, do I feel better about the corner or linebacker options?
in the third round and like who do i think is actually going to be there and that's got to be
one they're thinking too yeah so i i hadn't looked at the sheet at all uh when it when it comes to
this player and i was like i wonder where ticario davis is because of his measurables i'm like man i
wonder if the the bengals would be in on him and he's way he's one ninety one on the sheet
he's projected to go in the fourth round according to dain uh but one ninety one on the sheet
and then i look up just a little bit and josiah trotter's right there too
Yeah.
And so when you think like third round like need pick,
those are,
that's kind of where you could see it.
Like they're like,
man,
we need a corner.
Maybe we trade down in round three from 72 to 80.
In,
that's it.
Takario Davis is the guy.
Like I just want to mention him too because he's,
he's lean,
but he's six four.
Maybe they think,
hey,
he can develop into a guy.
Because what I think they,
I assume they'll be targeting as a guy that can start.
if Dax and DJ, if one of those guys sign elsewhere.
And so it would be projecting to help them now and then potentially be a starter
next year.
Like that's what they're looking for.
So the other ones to mention there, Devin Moore from Florida, taller, bigger guy,
Julian Neal, also taller, a little bit bigger for the position.
Those guys are 100 by consensus right now.
So they would be seen as reaches in the third round by some, but not necessarily all.
so those would be some other corners for the third round or maybe even fourth round maybe they can get one of those guys in the fourth time and maybe that's it maybe that's where it ends up which we're going to be talking about corner being in need but then like where does the the swing tackle fit in and where does the interior offensive linemen fit in we'll talk about where we think they will address those spots as we get to our predictive mock james but like i think it says something that we're so focused on corner linebacker right now and and we're just days from the
draft. We're on the same page, I think, with that one.
Feels like that needs to be a priority for them early, early being on Friday,
because they no longer have that first round pick.
So we'll get to our predictive mock tomorrow.
Want to touch on these number of changes before we get out of here, James,
because the Bengals have broken precedent once again.
Not only have they traded for Dexter Lawrence, but perhaps even more surprising.
No, I'm kidding.
It's not quite more surprising, but it's actually not that far off.
The Bengals have allowed DJ Turner to wear the number zero.
Brian Cook gets his number six.
Dexter Lawrence gets seven.
Samar Stewart goes to 94.
There's a shuffle among the interior defensive lineman.
It's all Jonathan Allen, now wearing 93, McKinley Jackson, wearing 91.
And Boy, Amoffet, by the way, 53.
So that's an interesting one.
But six for Cook, zero for Turner, 97 for Lawrence, the headliners here.
Yep, love it.
I love that McKinley Jackson took over 91.
Samar Stewart wore four at A&M.
So he gets 94 now.
Makes sense.
Jonathan Allen's always wore 93.
Should keep that.
And Dexie.
Well, yeah, man, you're the big fish.
You get 97.
Of course you do.
But man, Agent Zero and Brian Cook, Mr. Six.
I love those two.
Those look great.
I'm just seeing those in the back end, number six and number zero.
It's a great day, my friend.
And they haven't given the single digit numbers to defensive players.
And so that's why it's interesting.
That's why I mentioned, like, is there an extension coming for DJ Turner?
These number changes have, like I said, they've often been tied to new deals for the Bengals in the past.
And Dexter Lawrence and Jonathan Allen landing on the defensive line leads to a number of shuffle among defensive linemen.
Brian Cook gets the number when he signs his contract.
And then there's the conspicuous zero change for DJ Turner, the only player on this list, I think, who is not a newly signed player.
who's changing a number because
not because his number is going elsewhere,
but apparently because he wanted to
and the Bengals let him do it.
So that one is interesting.
Potential canary in the coal mine?
I don't know.
Maybe a conspiracy theory.
Maybe just...
If you're right, sign him.
Sign him.
Let's go.
DJ Turner contract extension.
Add another zero.
That was the joke earlier in the show.
Now you guys get it.
Everyone gets it.
That's going to do it for this episode
of the lockdown Bengals podcast.
Our next one is a predictive
Mark, we'll be back with you after Thursday night.
We'll talk about what happened at 10.
We'll talk about who's available to the Bengals for the second round
and how things have shaped up all the surprises that are sure to come
in what might be a weird first round this year and a weird potential draft
where there's not a whole lot of consensus anywhere.
So we're covering you all week here on lockdown Bengals.
It is draft week and that is where our focus is.
And until next time, thanks for listening.
Hootay and have a good one.
