As expected on Monday, the NFL handed down a one game suspension for the Jamar Chase spitting incident with Jay Lamansy.
He's appealing. Let's break it all down now.
You are locked on Bengals, your daily Cincinnati Bengals podcast.
Part of the Locked on Podcast Network, your team every day.
What up Bengals fans and welcome to another episode of the Locked on Bengals podcast.
Part of the Locked on podcast network, now the number one sports podcast network.
out there, and that is a badge of pride that James Rapine and myself, Jake Lisko, where we've been
covering the Cincinnati Bengals here on Lockdown Bengals since 2016, the best one-stop shop online,
on the internet, the best podcast out there for you to say after date on all things,
Bengals.
And unfortunately, James, some breaking-ish news.
By the time people listen to this, it's not quite breaking as we're recording this,
breaking news that Jamar Chase has, as expected, been suspended for one game by the NFL.
Jamar Chase is appealing that suspension that by the time you listen to this,
maybe you know the result of that appeal.
I think James personally that he has a pretty tough uphill argument to make to win that
appeal, especially when considering some of the guys that might hear that appeal.
But because it was caught in camera, caught in 4K, as they say, that suspension decision,
I think pretty easy for the NFL to make on Monday.
Yeah, I think he was always going to get suspended.
We may differ a little bit on the appeal process
and in how much of a shot he has.
We'll get into that.
He is appealing, by the way.
That was certainly the plan for Jamar's camp
pre-knowing and knowledge of the suspension.
But the suspension comes down late Monday afternoon,
Eastern time, around 4.30 is when it started to make the rounds.
And look, no one should be surprised.
Anyone that saw Austin Breeski's video,
my guy Austin of Fox 19 like Jamar did spit on him and so it is that simple it is it really is
from a a discipline standpoint and I think Jake that's where you're coming from and we're going to
hear from Zach Taylor coming up Zach Taylor talked just to give everyone a real timeline here at
three Eastern and defended Jamar Chase acknowledged that Jamar made a mistake didn't want to get
into what could happen from the league and all of those things and so we'll hear from
Zach coming up.
But this is the, if this holds up, just from a football standpoint, good luck against
New England.
Like, good luck against arguably the hottest team in football.
What do you mean, Jermaine Burton isn't coming to save the day, James?
I did see Jermaine in the locker room on Monday.
I do think he's feeling better.
But to your point, yeah, I mean, that's, Shamar Chase is your best player.
And clearly when he's taken away, it's tough for this offense.
So look, I think that's the biggest takeaway is you're already climbing up Everest when it
comes to this season.
And you and I have kind of moved on from a this season standpoint after losing after they
lost to the Steelers on Sunday, which I think a lot of people are in that boat.
But the Bengals internally and players wise, of course they're going to go out there and try
to beat New England on Sunday.
So a lot harder to do that if Jamar Chase isn't out there.
And, well, I think we're going to know pretty quickly on Tuesday, some point during the day, Tuesday, what happens with this appeal.
But like you, I mean, if we were looking at the Fandall odds, of course, Jamar Chase, the odds are in the suspensions favor, not in the Jamar Chase wins the appeal type thing.
I'm trying to figure out what the best grounds for appeal would be.
Like, obviously, there are a couple of plays earlier that involved Jailan Rand.
Maybe playing a little bit after the whistle or toward the tail end of the whistle,
T. Higgins getting hit a couple yards deep into the end zone, starts things off early in the game.
Jamar Chase obviously takes a vicious hit after he doesn't haul in a Joe Flacco pass.
And it's kind of hard for me to tell.
I watch replay a couple times to see, does Jayloramsie see that that's incomplete before he lowers his head and plows into Jamar anyway?
because I couldn't really tell.
And I think if it were a neutral situation
and we were talking about this,
or if it was a Bengals player that hit a wide receiver that way,
we would be saying,
well, what do you want him to do?
If the player catches the ball and you let up,
then he,
and Mr. Mark Chase on the other side, especially,
like he could just go for six.
So it's definitely late.
Don't get me wrong.
I'm not trying to defend that hit from Jalen Ramsey,
but it's borderline enough that, you know, from the league's perspective,
there's like, ah, well, those are football plays.
And trash talk is trash talk.
Guys talk all the time.
You can't spit on somebody for talking to you.
And that's where I wonder what exactly the defense would be.
I wonder if it would be, as Jay Morrison wrote about over at bengalstalk.com, James.
And this is technically speaking, the first time a player will have been suspended for spitting.
And Jalen Carter was, quote, suspended because he was ejected from the game.
It was a suspension with time served.
He was fined a game check of salary that made that ejection, which was before the Eagles' first defensive staff of the game,
a time served kind of thing.
So that's the precedent that people are talking about today.
Before that, and Jay did a great job of covering this.
There isn't really precedent for a suspension for this.
I wonder if that's a route you go and say, you know what, fine them.
There's all this precedent of fines for this sort of misconduct, but maybe not a suspension.
I wonder if that's an avenue that go.
Yeah, twofold.
It is that.
You would go the precedent route for sure and say, hey, show me.
One, two, and I think you can make this case.
And to your point, is it borderline?
Fine, borderline.
But they were borderline all game.
And it was borderline all game.
And from the jump, the fact that, well, from the jump, they were trying to get in Jamar's head.
We'll start there.
And they were trying to bump him and shove him and hit him and do it.
And I get it.
You're saying, oh, it's football.
And like, that's fine.
I think Jamar should have grabbed Jalen Ramsey by the helmet and thrown him into the stands after the borderline hit that I tweeted out on Monday.
That's what he should have done.
That should have been the time where he lost his cool and composure.
me personally that's the one that i think because that's how you get really messed up like he could
have gotten really hurt and it was a crazy hard hit and yeah he was left out the dry and all of those
things that's the one i would have been upset about and so how many of those can you find
and use as as part of your defense as to why things escalated to that level and there was build up
and build up and build up like i i do wonder now to your point they may say nope it's football
That's it.
And if that happens, what's it going to cost Jermar?
Because I think that's the other part of this.
$50,000 big ones.
Isn't it more than that?
Because there's like the per game.
Oh, no, no, no.
Yeah, it was 450 plus the 50.
Yeah, yeah.
548 plus 50 something that.
So 50 plus thousand.
It's just shy of $5,000 and $8,000 that it will cost Jemar.
Honestly, like, thank goodness, his base salaries at $8 million, right?
And that number isn't higher because it's one 18th of his base salary.
Well, Jaylen Carter,
like talking about precedent here.
And again, I don't say any of this to defend Jamar.
Just to be clear about that.
He's wrong.
We're talking about hypothetical appeal defenses for Jamar Chase.
That's why we're having this discussion.
This is mostly a hypothetical conversation.
None of this justifies spitting on another human being.
You shouldn't do that.
That's bad.
But in terms of the precedent conversation,
if we're talking about the appeal that Jamar Chase's camp can make,
maybe you're listening to this podcast as you're burning the midnight oil,
getting ready for that appeal on Tuesday.
This would be by far the biggest financial penalty for a player for this sort of thing.
Jalen Carter's rookie game check was like five digits or something because it's a rookie deal.
And the Bill Romanowski example stood out to me.
I know that there's been inflation since then,
But Bill Romanowski for it, I assume this was in the 90s, maybe early 2000s, was fined for spitting on a player, $7,500.
And now you're talking about not only the suspension, but the financial penalty on top of that.
1997, 1997.
Yeah, I assumed it was the 90s for a $7,500.
Yeah, you spit on JJ Stokes.
And then there's a couple other examples in there.
Like, Terrell Owens didn't get a suspension months because it wasn't caught on camera.
And apparently only one camera.
I wonder if there were others.
I wonder if one of the all 22 cameras also caught this or not.
But it is caught on camera.
So there's not that excuse.
If it wasn't caught on camera,
I really wonder how this would have gone.
Point is, is $500,000 for a guy like Jamar who just got paid a lot of money,
is kind of a drop in the bucket in the grand scheme of things.
But that's a lot of money.
And it's way more money than any player, I think,
would have been cost for this sort of misconduct.
in the NFL's history so you know those are some things that if i were jemar's defense attorney
in this appeal or whatever that i got i might bring up yeah i i want to get to zach we need to
get to zach and hear what he had to say again he talked before the suspension so it's about jama
it's about the situation but i also have a point i want to bring up about jama and jalen and i think
it's an important one to point out and i think bengal's fans will enjoy that so we'll do that coming
next. Today's show was brought to you by friends over there at Peloton. Look, folks, it's time to

All right, Jake.
Let's get to my overall thought that has really stuck with me for the past 24 plus hours.
Probably 26 hours or so, as we sit here, that we've been dealing with Spitgate or whatever you want to call it.
But I'm going to call it Spickgate for now.
And maybe not because it's pretty clear as day that that happened.
Jalen Ramsey is 31.
But my man is washed.
So washed that I can't believe that 25-year-old Jamar Chase in his prime best receiver on the planet let Jalen Ramsey washed.
And I get it.
He's only 31.
But it is not, it's not 2017 anymore.
This isn't I'm the top corner in the league and I'm going to try to fight AJ Green and get in his head.
In the year 2025, who gives a damn what J. Ramsey thinks?
Who cares what he says?
I don't know, like from a speaking standpoint, I have no idea how he got Jamar to engage so quickly.
And maybe it's because Jamar thought he was just going to crush him again like he did a month ago on Thursday night football.
I'm not sure.
But when I like take the thousand foot view and I think of superstar wide receiver Jamar Chase versus washed up star who had to switch positions in the past couple of weeks, Jalen Ramsey.
And he's still an effective player, but he's not what he once was.
I can't wrap my head around that part of it.
Like take away the fact that this is locked on Bengals and anything.
This could be locked on anything.
Why would a 25-year-old star give a damn about what a wash star thinks?
You shouldn't care.
And so that is the surprise to me is that Jalen was able to.
It's one thing if it's mono-imano,
25-year-old star versus 27-year-old star, and they're going at it.
But this isn't AJ Green versus Jalen Ramsey in 2017 in Jacksonville.
This is wash Jailen.
and a guy in Jamar who just happens to be the best receiver on the planet for my money.
Yeah, I think it's honestly a pattern that we've seen from Jamar in select instances.
We haven't seen it a ton against the Steelers.
He's generally had a lot of success against the Steelers.
Jake Brown in games a couple years ago, notwithstanding,
he's generally been pretty successful against the Steelers and the Raven,
so we haven't really seen it come out a ton in those games.
We've seen now this incident,
there was one previous incident in a Ravens game.
You've seen it a lot, though, against the Chiefs, a team that he clearly despises.
And these teams can at times, when things are going well, especially getting to Jamar's head.
And so that's where for Jamar, this can be a learning experience, right?
You are Jamar Chase.
You're still that guy.
You can't react that way.
even if you're doing everything else right.
And I'm sure, and when Zach Taylor talks about this,
and we'll hear what he had to say in a minute here,
even when all that stuff is true, and I think it is.
I think Jamar Chase goes about things the right way.
There are times, and I think we've talked about this on the podcast before.
If you haven't, I've certainly talked about it just before or just after recording.
There are times where Jamar seems more interested in physically engaging with opponents,
especially opponents that are trying to press him a lot,
that are talking a lot of trash to him,
then just trying to beat him.
And we have seen this, like I said,
especially against the Chiefs,
a couple times throughout his career,
the Steelers clearly got to him on Sunday.
They got into his head with the way they were treating him,
pressing him, putting another guy inside to press him
if he release his inside,
pressing him and putting another guy directly over him,
even though he's outside the numbers,
the amount of attention that he got,
the amount of trash that was being talked,
and Jalen Ramsey, especially with some of those hits,
they got into his head a little bit.
So to your point, you got to find ways to rise above that
and find more productive ways to channel that energy.
Is it easier to sit here and say that on a microphone
than to do that in a game when you're getting punched in the mouth over and over?
Yeah, but that's part of the job if you're Jamar Chase
and part of what you're getting paid to do.
Yeah, I think my response would be,
Jaylen, you're so old that you need to triple cover me right now.
You need all this help.
They don't even let you play corner anymore because I'm in the same division as you.
And that would be it.
And I'm sure some of that came up.
But then when you don't get the ball, then that's where the frustration boils over too.
No doubt.
No doubt.
And see, I don't want to get into the Zach Taylor conversation.
We're about to hear from Zach Taylor in just a second.
But you got to find a way to get T. Higgins the ball of Jamar's commanding that kind of attention.
You got to find a way to get these other guys.
You know, it's a whole thing that.
Oh, yeah. We talk about that. The film episode that we got coming tomorrow, we talk about the double double, the Bengals lack of answers to that, all those things.
Yep, for sure. So I'm looking forward to that. I haven't seen that episode yet, obviously, because we had this breaking move, but Jake and in Bengal Sands, they will have that for you on our next show.
But let's get to Zach Taylor. He had a nice back and forth with Mike Petralia of CLNS Media at CLNS.com about Jamar Chase. We asked him a bunch of questions. This isn't everything that Zach said.
about Jamar, but a decent chunk of it and pretty noteworthy stuff, I would say.
And again, this is before Jamar Chase was officially suspended from the NFL.
Zach, have you had conversations with Jamar about what happened yesterday in Pittsburgh.
I have. Yeah, I'll just keep that to myself.
Are you concerned about the image of the organization being really under a lot of criticism nationally?
And I'm just curious what the conversations are like internally that you have all the time with Mike and Katie and
on matters like that?
Well, first of all, I've always been impressed with how Jamar's handled himself
because he is in a lot of these situations where he's got to target as a top player.
He gets a lot of respect that way.
And so guys try to do a lot of things to get his attention and get him off his game.
And I've always thought it was unbelievable how he's handled himself
in some really high pressure emotional decisions.
Obviously, what happened is crossing the line, we can't have that.
And I know he'll own up to that.
But beyond that, I've always sat up here and praised Jamar because he's one of the best leaders we've got the way he goes about everything.
He plays with the tumble of motion.
He plays with a ton of leadership.
Our guys respond to that.
And I've always appreciated how he's handling himself.
I guess the reason I ask you is you're really the only moment we have to talk to in the organization that can reflect how the organization feels after a really unfortunate, an ugly moment like yesterday.
Yeah.
How do you feel?
How do they feel?
Well, again, I just, Jamar is one of my favorite.
I love how this guy handles everything that he's been a part of.
So making one mistake doesn't disregard everything this guy's done that's been positive for us.
And so I think that's what you're asking.
I really don't know what you're asking me.
But again, I can't say enough positive things about Jamar and think about the amount of situations people have tried to put him in
in the way that he's always responded.
And we're not all perfect.
We're going to make a mistake here and there.
But I stand by Jamar, and I know it's an emotional situation.
I know there's a lot of things going on there that lead to things like that.
And again, we'll just continue to move forward.
And what have you heard from the league?
No, I haven't heard anything.
This weekend?
Do you anticipate having Jamar?
I'm not going to make any, I have no idea.
Is it somewhat disappointing, given how much he had, you meant out to be a captain this year,
made a lot of strides and how he kind of handled himself, especially with us,
maybe on the field, and for him to kind of have this?
Is this somewhat of a setback?
No, again, people are allowed to make a mistake.
So that's all I'll say about it.
Zach Taylor on Monday, again, before Jamar Chase was suspended.
And look, he did make a mistake.
And I think that there's a decent chance, Jake, that he is suspended and that this does hold up and more than a decent chance,
a really good chance that this is the case and they're playing without Jamar on Sunday.
Yeah, we will wrap up the conversation on.
Jamar Chase and get to some of the other
notables from Zach Taylor's
Monday presser including news on Camp Taylor
Britt. Trey Hendrickson
already doubtful this week. That's not great
news. We'll wrap up on
Jamar and get to those topics to finish the show next.
Today's show is brought to by
Fandall. Fandall is America's number
one sports book and you got
to get Fandall right now
because Fandle was the place
where you can go to wager on
Bengals Patriots. Any
guesses, Jake, on what
what the line is here. I'm not sure if you've looked. If you've looked, then just go ahead and
throw your guess. I'm going to guess 10 points for the Patriots. Seven and a half. The Patriots
are seven and a half point favorites right now. The over under set at 48 and a half against the Patriots.
Look, tough spot to be in, tough spot, especially with the uncertainty surrounding Jamar Chase.
I'm not sure. I assume that line already reflects the Jamar Chase suspension. I think it should be
more than that because offensively now you're like, all right, well, how are they going to
get the points necessary to compete at that level,
considering they have a safety that can't tackle on linebackers
that just get their ankles broken in space.
All right, anyways, the point is,
is you can get on all the fun with Fandall.
And it's not just the NFL.
Maybe you're sick at the NFL and you want to get on the NBA.
Well, the NBA is perfect for our same game parlor.
They have live bets.
They have so much more at Fandoan.
Right now, Fandall is giving new customers $300 in bonus bets
when your first $5 bet wins.
All you have to do is go to fandul.com and sign up to play your
game with Fandall.
Again, that's Fandall.com, the official sports betting partner of the NBA.
Zach Taylor backing up, Jemar Chase.
I think, like I said, there's a lot to that.
I think that from a human element here, yeah, he made a mistake.
Yeah, it's inexcusable.
Yeah, he should face the consequences in the music for it more than likely.
Whatever shape those consequences end up being after repeal.
And then you move on.
And you learn from it.
Jamar is the kind of guy that I think will learn from this.
I know he has had and Jay Morrison also covered this fairly extensively in that article
of Bengals talk.
Some finds in his past, I wouldn't necessarily expect to see this become the norm for the kind
of person that Jamar has shown himself to be over his time in Cincinnati.
So I'm not sure how much else there is to say about that.
I was just thinking about that line, though.
Seven and a half, you said, was the, was the Fandul line?
Yeah.
Yeah.
Yeah, I obviously went high.
I wonder if they're baking in the very slim odds that Joe Burrow returns this week.
I don't think that's happening.
But Zach Taylor did say, speaking of things Zach Taylor said, that Joe Burrow is trending
toward working into 11 on 11s in practice.
This week, last week did some seven-on-seven work, was not willing to commit to a timeline for Burrow,
but as we're going to talk about Camp Taylor Britt and Trey Hendrickson's injuries and all those things,
Joe Burrow continues to march toward a return.
And I think that what you could take away from Monday's press conference with Zach on Burrow was,
yeah, it doesn't really matter that we lost to Pittsburgh.
It won't matter necessarily if we lose to New England.
Joe Burrow wants to play football again this year.
And if he feels good, he's going to play football again this year.
That was kind of my takeaway, James.
What did you think?
I think I tried to get Zach to say that, completely say it.
And he applauded the effort.
I will be very, very critical if record doesn't matter.
If it comes to putting the most important person, arguably in history of the franchise,
but certainly over the past decade and the next decade, even if he's not playing for the next decade for this franchise.
I will probably disagree with the decision.
But it does feel like it's trending that way.
Better beat New England.
It's all I have to say.
Better beat New England if you're trying to try to sell me on Joe Burrow returning.
It's going to be the Jermaine Burton breakout game, right?
Look at you just get.
Come on now.
Don't.
Is Jermaine Burton going to be active if Jemar Chase is suspended this weekend?
It's a question.
It's a real question.
It's a crazy thing.
that we're asking for sure it's a real that's what i mean like it's it's not a an obvious oh well germain
will just be up like maybe he will be but it might be kendrick prior you know and and i think
germane it's a good opportunity for him to show that he's ready to go you know uh he's had he's
had his fair share put it that way but uh a couple other injuries speaking of opportunities it felt
like cam taylor brit was maybe turning a corner i talked to some people behind the scenes that
felt like over the past few weeks, and this is prior to Sunday's game, that Cam Taylor Britt was
really engaged and playing better and in handling his business and all of those things. So
kind of a shame that injuries in general are a shame, but it's a shame that he could and likely
will be out for the rest of the season and has a foot injury, probably going to undergo
surgery, the Liss-Frank injury, according to Zach Taylor, just sucks. I did see him in the
locker room left foot had a boot on it was on a scooter was zooming around on that scooter
but might be the last we see of cam tetherbrett this season and who knows maybe the last we see
of him in bengal stripes yeah i think it would be a mild surprise if we see him play another game for
the bengals but you never know when the offseason comes around or what exactly they'll they'll
learn about the injury there's always a chance but uh that that the injury isn't what they think it is
but it seems like it's very destined to end his season.
It seems very likely, I should say,
that it's destined to end his season.
And then it would be a surprise,
at least a mild surprise to me,
if there's a reunion with Camp Taylor Britt this offseason.
But they've done surprising things before
in terms of bringing players back that we didn't expect.
C. Germain Pratt, C. B.J. Hill.
Trey Hendrickson, also already doubtful this week
against the New England Patriots,
And we're going to talk in that film review about the game Miles Murphy had.
Hopefully it's a breakout game for him and the ways that he won,
the ways that he was able to be a standout performer against a Pittsburgh Steelers on a defense that was really lacking them.
But you're going to continue to feel Trey Hendrickson's absence.
I think since we last discussed, Trey, it was revealed that he is going to need offseason surgery.
I don't believe we've talked about that on the podcast yet, has a core muscle injury,
a.k.a. sports hernia is what this used to be called
that will eventually require a surgical intervention to repair
and Trey is trying to put that off until the offseason,
but it looks like already doubtful.
And this could have been a trip to the IR, I think, at this point now,
with another game missed for Trey.
Maybe not close to it.
Yeah, close to it.
It's odd.
I will say these core muscle injuries are weird.
Like there's been multiple times, I know.
of different players that have had issues and then you look closer and closer and then you realize
that's what it is.
But, yeah, unfortunate, not sure.
If Trey should come back, I did ask Zach Taylor about that.
He said it won't be record-based.
It's health-based.
Easier decision with Trey, I would say, is morbid as that may sound versus a guy like Joe.
But it is one of those things where you talk about the dead cat bounce.
And there's a lot here when it comes to Joe.
But I don't want Joe coming in on his horse saving everyone's job when they've sucked all year.
They're one in seven without them.
Like who's done a good job?
Who's done their job well right now?
And I know that's a different conversation and not one that we plan on having this is the Jamar Chay suspension story.
But like that's one we're going to have.
And this idea that, and I, you're right.
I don't think he's going to play this week, but like the three and eight Bengals on Thanksgiving and Joe Burroughs returning.
Like that sounds like my nightmare because you're three and eight.
Like that's it.
Like it's done.
You're done.
Yeah.
And there's at least one person in the building that needs to be able to tell Joe Burrow no.
And if they want to hire me to do it, you know, pay me double what that Jamar Chase fine is per year and I'll do it.
You didn't know.
I just go in there.
I don't disagree with you though.
Like if there's a if there's a chance that he re-injures that thing and this is probably not something that we talk about at the 29 minute mark of a podcast is probably something that we'll talk about it again.
It's fine.
Yeah.
But if there's a risk of re-injury for this thing, turf toe is a kind of injury that can really derail careers.
And that's not something like I'm not saying that's the case for Joe.
I'm not saying that's what has happened or will happen.
but it is a thing that for other players in the past has shortened or altered careers.
And that is scary to think about even if he goes back out there with a boot or with the metal plate in his shoe,
even if he's fine.
What is the upside?
There is upside, but it is limited when you're not playing meaningful football games.
Yeah.
There's a ton here.
But now that's called a tease because we're going to get to more of that.
but we do have film tomorrow.
I'm excited to check that out because there are going to be some positives and there were some positives.
And I'm glad you and Mike hit on some positives.
Plus, let's see.
Oh, real quick, you're going to see Bengals squad shows here on our locked on feed.
They're live on YouTube and then twice a week on audio.
If you see that, we're still here.
We're still doing five a week.
So if you don't hear Jake's voice right away or my voice, well, that's okay.
You'll be able to find us.
So we might just be one down.
I know that happened on Friday with our game preview.
Just noting that, that just means more bonus content coming your way here on the Lockdown Bengals' feet.
Yeah, a couple of extra episodes per week, Alex Frank hosting those.
I will participate from time to time for most of the ones that are midweek.
And you'll catch Bengals Sands, Mike Santagana on the post games, along with former coach Art Valero.
that is like James said, extra content.
So if you are confused about what you are hearing
and you're one of the people that's at the end of this episode,
you probably have already noticed this.
We'll continue to remind some folks a couple times here
as we got the new content.
Everywhere you get your podcast on YouTube,
you'll see it everywhere, the extra show
that is going to be a separate little bit of extra content
for all you Bengals fans out there that can't get enough.
But that's going to do it for this episode
of the Lockdown Bengals podcast.
Your next episode will be with Mike's Antigna and my
We're going to get into the film takeaways against the Steelers.
Until then, thanks for listening.
Hoodei and have a good one.
