After an off season of ESPN headlines about Joe Burrow wanting out of Cincinnati,
I think we can put that to bed.
I don't know if they're talking about it,
but Joe Burrow seems satisfied with the Bengals aggression this off season.
You are Locked on Bengals, your daily Cincinnati Bengals podcast.
Part of the Locked on Podcast Network, your team every day.
What up Bengals fans and welcome to another episode of the Lockdown Bengals podcast.
He's James Rapine. I'm Jake Blissko.
We are your host of Lockdown Bengals.
And today, well, we're covering the Met Gala.
Not exactly, but that's where Joe Burrow did an interview with Vanity Fair
and talked about football a little bit
after talking about his designer and all the things that go into Met Gala Life.
I really have no idea, but you can check out the interview at Vanity Fair
and find out about Joe Burroughs' latest hobbies as well.
We're going to start with what Joe Burrow had to say about football
before we get to some of the other interesting comments about football,
from some of the Bengals that were in attendance for the Bengals off-season program,
namely Dax Hill, who I found to be pretty interesting at his locker
during the open locker room on Tuesday.
But James, let's start with Joe Burrow, as we do,
as shows that cover the Cincinnati Bengals do,
because it's been a long off-season of us listening to national shows,
shouty shows, as Steve and Sam like to call them,
talking about Joe Burrow should force his way out of Cincinnati.
And we're back.
We're back to Dan Patrick before the Bengals drafted Joe Burrow.
And all of these shows talking about, oh, they better make Joe Burrow happy.
They better.
Joe's going to want out.
Joe's not going to want to play in Cincinnati.
And I think this quote from Vanity Fair shows that there's some real satisfaction from
Burrow about the way the Bengals went about this off season.
And there should be.
And I think that's where I would start.
if we had to guess what Joe was thinking before the Met Gala,
before the conversation with Vanity Fair, guess what?
It would be, hey, he's pretty pleased with the additions.
And I'm sure he really likes that Brian Cook and Boye-Mafé are in stripes
and that he has a guy like Dexter Lawrence in the middle of this defense that they can build around.
And so a lot of the things we've said that our listeners and everydayers are in on,
I'm sure Joe's in on.
And guess what?
We have the quote now to back it up.
he said, quote, I'm really excited about the moves we made this offseason.
We need to get better.
So it was exciting to see the initiative from everybody in the organization to realize
that we're in this exciting stage.
We're in our primes playing great football, finding guys like Dexter and Brian Cook
to really solidify that defense.
So the young guys can also kind of rise up.
We're really going to try and achieve what we want to achieve.
He also mentioned Mafe as well.
And for me,
like these offseason additions, I thought, oh, well, Joe's going to feel like he has a shot now
to win a Super Bowl for the first time in a couple of years. I don't think he really felt that way
going into last season. I think he thought, hey, I'm healthy. The defense could be a little better
with Al. We'll have a shot if we get in. Now I'm sure he feels like he has a real puncher's chance
the way he did in 2022 after they had proven it. And then they came back with an even better
roster. So it's good to see Joe Burrough speak this way. The fact that he mentioned,
the organization being taking initiative and realizing that they're in their prime,
I think is pretty noteworthy because now is the time he should be winning.
We say it.
You better believe that Joe knows it and feels it.
And so I'm not sure there's anyone more excited than him to see the moves they made over the past couple of months.
Yeah, a lot of this quote you could just write off is like, oh, he's talking to Vanity Fair.
They asked a token football question at the Met Gala.
like Burrough's going to say nice things.
I'm excited about the moves who made this off season.
Like, yeah, of course.
Joe's going to say that.
That means nothing.
We added these guys and he names the guys they add.
Of course.
Like, of course Joe Burroughs going to say that.
But yeah, the part that you point out is a part that stood out to me as well that
showed that there is actually to me some meaning in this quote.
If there was concern about Joe's opinion about the front office and their ability to put
together a good football team, it's exactly the part of the
quote you talked about.
Exciting to see the initiative from everyone in the organization to realize that we're in
this exciting stage.
And he didn't say window, but you might as well have said window, that we're in this window
instead of exciting stage.
The tacit acknowledgement there that the team did approach this offseason differently,
the team instead of we want to be good every year, we're trying to do something sustainable,
acknowledging that we need to do something differently this offseason.
And that's what Burrow is recognizing here,
is that the organization realized
that this offseason needed to be a little bit different
for all of their denials.
Oh, yeah, we're always looking at traits.
This one just happened to come together.
What made this one different?
Had a hard time getting that answer out of anybody
that worked for the Bengals.
But I think that Burrow here is saying
what we've all thought
that they did treat this offseason differently,
that they are, I think,
seeing the culmination of the last,
last few years of frustration, whether it's Burrow being hurt or them losing when he's healthy
because the defense fell apart and now seeing like, hey, we have a veteran offense that returns
all of its starters, one of the oldest offenses in football, by the way, and that might include
Joe Flacco and Josh Johnson is part of the equation. Those guys certainly elevating the average
age of the Bengals offense, but they've got these guys that are in their primes like Joe's saying
here and are in a window and they're finally treating it.
as if they need to push the envelope for that window.
And I think that is the big takeaway here for Joe's quote is the observation that,
yeah, they are doing things differently.
You guys aren't crazy.
The front office might be downplaying it,
but they obviously have done something differently here.
And Joe seems to approve pretty strongly.
He does.
And the thing is with all these events, right?
And Joe's popular.
He's the most popular athlete in Cincinnati sports history.
It's not particularly close.
And there are going to be comments that mention Pete Rose or Johnny Bench or insert whoever, right?
It's not even close.
He could stop playing right now.
And he's by far the most famous Cincinnati athlete by a wide margin.
And it's because of the era he played in as much as anything else.
But that fame gets him into the Met Gala.
And it gets him into the, you see him in the Kentucky Derby.
And the Derby posts his reaction.
And that is news.
he has paparazzi following him around even though he's been in los angeles and tried to keep i would
would say a relatively low profile day today and we still see images of him influencers working out at the
aloe gym and yes what he's working out there too and someone finds a screen grab of him in a in a mirror
in a mirror and why is that relevant well it's relevant because everywhere he goes you better believe
they're like man you better get the hell out of Cincinnati if they're going to keep treating you that
way. And if he keeps losing and they keep being perceived as a team that isn't trying to go all
into win, that will get into his head. And he will start to think that and believe that. And so
this offseason was big and getting him to believe that they will do whatever it takes to win.
And they've done essentially everything. I don't really think he views it as our linebackers,
right in Barrett Carter
Demetrius Knight why didn't you address linebacker
like I think the average fan would mention that right away today
for the Bengals I'm not sure Joe views it that way
I do think that there's one more thing
that you may be able to guess Jake
that they could do to completely
leave any doubt or take away
wipe away any doubt in the back of Joe Burroughs mind
when it comes to all in and being focused on winning
and I'm going to run that
you coming up next.

All right, Jake, I think the one thing that the Bengals could still do,
and maybe there's a plan to do this,
but they haven't done it yet, and I'm sure you know.
Joe Burrow is very much aware that all of these other quarterbacks
have had their contracts restructured.
He's been asked about it a ton,
and I think that would be the other piece here,
is when that happens, if that happens,
they've traded a top 10 pick for a dominant defensive player
that you feel like is dominant if you're Joe Burrow.
They've restructured your deal.
They've added all these other pieces that are proven pieces that should help your defense.
They brought back Dalton Reisner.
They brought in Joe Flacco and are spending more on a backup quarterback than they've ever spent.
You can look at all of these waves of things and moves that they've done and it checks a lot of boxes.
And so I think that's the one that remains for fans, certainly for us, I think, to a degree.
And certainly for Joe Burrow, even if he wouldn't say it publicly.
Yeah, I mean, you add on to that keeping the guys that he listed for them to keep last year.
Trey Hendrickson departs this year.
They go out and bring guys in free agency and draft Cassius Howl and trade for Dexter Lawrence to try to remake that defensive line and build a deeper, more comprehensive unit than one that relied on Trey's star power.
The only thing is the contract structures and Joe Burroughs restructure or Jamar Chase restructure.
and trying to spend a little bit extra,
they would probably say that they're spending extra on Dexter Lawrence,
especially next year.
I think we talked about it right after the trade.
Dexter Lawrence this year costs roughly the same amount of cash
as the 10th overall pick would have cost to Bengals.
So he doesn't actually represent, interestingly, to me, maybe only,
a cash increase this year, Dexter Lawrence versus a rookie contract,
but certainly a cap hit increase and a future cash increase there.
So they're spending more.
They're one of the top 10 for now cash spending teams in the NFL.
They didn't do everything we wanted them to do.
We talked about that a little bit this week with the linebackers.
They didn't do everything they wanted to do with the lineback edition.
If they had restructured Joe Burrow, would they have felt more comfortable doing that?
Maybe.
I think at this point, the Bengals would probably be correct to say restructuring Joe Burroughs contract.
at this point in time is a questionable value proposition.
And part of that is, again, this is like the fourth straight episode that I've talked about this,
looking ahead to next year's cap situation for this team,
they might think that it just makes more sense to start the restructures for Joe next year
and just find another way to get through this year somehow with the cap being relatively tight,
especially for them, and figure out a plan to get through this season and then next season
deal with restructures. And the reason, and they could do it both seasons. Sure. They could.
But the reason that they might feel that way is that generally they're going to want to restructure
as little as possible. Their history shows us this. They've never done it. They kind of did it with
Joe Mixin. There was a pay cut involved there. That's why I don't count it because there was a pay cut
involved there. But they have done some void year manipulation. They did it with Joe Flacko's
contract. So they're sprinkling that in from time to time. They're exploring these mechanisms a little bit.
But the reason they might want to wait until next year is that restructuring Joe this year
pushes an additional cap expense into next year.
Then even if they restructure him again next year, that additional expense from this year is there next year.
Even if they roll over that money, which at this point in the off season, they probably would, right?
That does increase the cap liability because they've restructured some of that money into the future.
Now, if they want to put this off as long as possible, that's where you could see them saying,
you know what, we'll just start this process next year, where,
our biggest cap concerns are, and that's me, I'm speculating there about what they think their
biggest cap issue is in the near future.
I think they think it's next year.
So they could just think, well, we'll just start this process next year.
And then it doesn't have as big of a down the road impact because we're only, we're starting
the whole process one year later.
And that's where they think it gets a little crunchy.
Yeah.
Look.
And if that's the case, if it is.
year later and that their plan is next off season great just communicate that with joe and i think
he'd be like all right let's roll and in that's it i think the communication with joe is going to be
important here because if you have his buy-in and i don't know why he wouldn't be bought in now i
understand why he would have been looking around like what the hell is going on after the past two off
seasons though i really do especially last year after he played so well coming off of the wrist
what they didn't do with the obvious needs here's t-jerk here's t-jose jose jose jes here's
Jay Slayton and a new defensive coordinator, Joe.
And guard.
Yeah, like it wasn't just defense either.
Like it's offensive line too.
And it was a huge question.
And so they've done a lot of great things.
And they deserve credit.
And I'm not shocked at all that Joe Burrow is excited about it.
And the other part of the quote that is important that hasn't been highlighted from Vanity Fair,
he said, this is fun.
And he was referring to the Met Gala.
And then he said, but soon it's going to be our job to go out on the field and
execute. And the reason why I think that's important is there are plenty of people that see him
doing the things that he does in the offseason and because it's so loud, it's so public,
he's such a star. They're like, oh, well, he's not focused. He's so Hollywood. He's so,
all these athletes are doing different things. It's broadcast higher and he's getting to more
exclusive events and it's louder because it's Joe Burrow. Guess what? He's a baller, man.
And the fact that that surface, that quote surfaced, and then the Jordan Palmer picture of him training as well on Instagram.
I think that that's noteworthy.
Joe Burroughs putting in the time, he's going to be ready to go.
That's the least of the Bengals worries that Joe Burroughs is going to have himself ready to go.
And I would expect him to report to Bengals offseason workouts at some point this month.
Would be stunned if it's not this month.
Yeah.
When do OTAs officially start in June for the Bengals?
because the way the off-season program works, for those of you that don't know,
there's the phase one, which is what they're in now, which is conditioning.
Then they ramp up a little bit to phase two where there's some football activities.
And then eventually they get to full-on OTAs, which are the optional training activities
that is after the ramp-up process before the month off and then you get training camp.
Do you know when OTAs officially start for the Bengals off the top?
Yeah, they do. June 2nd is when OTAs start.
So you're going to see him then.
mandatory minicamp is June 16th, 17th, and 18th.
But I would be stunned if you don't see him for OTA's rookie mini camp is Friday for those
wondering.
And then you have three full team workouts on May 12th, May 19th, and May 26th.
Next time we'll hear from Zach Taylor, potentially May 12th.
But obviously that's subject to change, but that gives you an idea of where things are.
I do think we will hear from Joe when he gets to town and start.
starts working out when that is I don't know I think it'll be this month I think it'll be
ahead of OTAs I think he'll be back yeah that would make sense after rookie mini camp the the rookies
obviously will start working out with the full team and they'll be integrated into the team activities
of the practices that they're having and Zach talked about that on shragher's podcast that he went
on for for 20 minutes not a whole lot of new information there if you're a Bengals fan if you want to
ingest ingest every bit of Bengals content you can go check it out um Zach has
didn't tell anything to Peter Schroger that you haven't already heard about the Bengals.
If you want to hear about Taylor's trips to Vegas, by all means, go check out his appearance with Peter Schroger.
But, yeah, one thing he did talk about was that they're going to start doing some of the actual football stuff and not just conditioning and things like that.
Shortly after the rookie minicat that concludes this week, which will be one day, then the rookies will join the team and start to get into football activities.
with the whole team.
And if Joe shows up shortly after that,
when they're doing actual on-field football stuff,
I don't think that that would be as surprise to anyone.
But it is something that we're going to have to monitor, James,
because there's, like you said,
plenty of people that are paying attention to the events Joe Burrow is at
in a negative light.
He was in like three cities and three days for the Kentucky Derby,
some F-1 race in Florida, and then the Met Gala.
So I think that was three cities and three days.
Maybe it was four days.
quite a bit of activity for him socially for a few days there.
But I still don't have any real issue with like Joe Burroughs preparation in the way that he
competes.
And until there's, I think, more evidence that that is not the case, I don't have a problem
with him doing a few things in the office.
Yeah.
Welcome.
He's going to continue to do those things and that's fine.
Guess what?
He needs to perform when it's time to perform.
And I think he's doing plenty of work to make sure that he's ready to go.
And I'm sure we're going to hear about this.
So if like, because the Bengals were two and oh to start last year.
But Joe wasn't great in those.
I mean, he got hurt in the second game, obviously.
But he wasn't playing great yet.
So, you know, are we going to hear about this if Joe isn't midseason?
He was great in the preseason, which I always thought preseason was dumb and it was stupid.
So that debunks that.
They suck against Cleveland always.
And I think he would have probably dominated the Jags since Jake Browning through three touchdowns and three picks.
We're going to have to talk about Joe Burrow playing in the preseason again pretty soon, huh?
Are we?
I imagine so.
Oh, I mean, you know my stance on it.
It has not changed after last year when he dominated a bunch of plumbers.
You know, practice squad guys, Joe Burrow better than the practice squad.
One guy that's not going to be on the practice squad is DACA.
Hill. Is he going to stay outside or move inside? We'll discuss coming up next.
Today's show is brought to by Rougiet. The NHL playoffs are here where every shift matters.

James Dax Hill was one of the Bengals who was greeted by several media members on Tuesday
and in the wake of the Bengals not adding a slot corner, drafting to Carrillo Davis, who
profiles to be best suited to the outside, he was asked about his desire to stay outside
or once again changed positions and Dax was very clear about this.
And I found this to be pretty interesting because it wasn't the most neutral political answer that Dax could have offered.
And he did say things about, you know, I want to do what's best for the team, obviously.
But that did come up.
But like, that wasn't it.
It was, I want to play outside.
I want to stay outside.
It's best for my development.
It's best for my mental health, which he laughed about, as he said.
But I think there's clearly a big rein of truth to that.
what stood out to you in the conversation Dax had with some of the media on Tuesday?
Daxo always wanted to play outside.
Daxo wanted to play outside last year.
And now that he said it publicly, I can say it.
He definitely, that's his preference.
Would he be willing to do whatever?
Absolutely.
And I think that that's the balance.
But I think he's most comfortable outside and he should be.
Look at how he played when he was out there.
It's just super smooth down the stretch of games.
And that's where he's really going to get paid.
Because if he's at his best outside with the way the cornerback market is moving,
you could be talking about $15 million per year minimum and much higher than that if he plays really well this season.
And I'm sure that's where his head's at.
I mean, it's been a wild four seasons for Dax Hill.
And it started with him dazzling as a rookie, pre-Jessie Bates coming into training camp.
And then he doesn't really play.
and then he starts as a safety his second year.
And it's just, it's been all around, all over.
And I think he'll play some nickel this year.
That's just going to be part of it.
But Daxo on the outside, I do think that that's the plan right now,
barring something unforeseen, that aligns with what the Bengals want to do,
and it'll be DJ Turner and Daxill outside.
But Dax is versatile.
And so are there going to be times where he has to kick inside and play the nickel?
Probably some, but I think he'll primarily be an outside corner.
he's going to get his wish what did you make of the he was asked have you have they communicated
a plan with you he said not yet what what do you think's going on there not nothing i don't think that's
out of the ordinary right i i think that they're probably evaluating everything right now including
should we go get a nickel corner should we go get another outside guy what's available what fits
I'm sure they still view corner as a mild need.
Certainly, you want another guy in that room, certainly at nickel or outside,
so it frees Dax to play the nickel more if you need it.
And that's the thing.
Like worst case, whether Dax likes it or not right now, he's the backup slot.
He is your second slot.
And maybe you have the first guy.
Maybe it is Jalen Davis who talked.
I don't know, though.
Like, is Jalen Davis a lot to make the roster?
I don't think so.
He's certainly not a lot to start.
and if you're this Bengals team evaluating things,
Dax Hill's versatility is part of why he's so attractive.
So I'm not trying to rule out anything.
They probably haven't communicated because there's no need.
It is phase one.
I think they certainly will with a,
the action plan I think is how Al Golden would phrase it.
And they'll give that to him at some point between now and the end of OTAs
and probably going into mandatory mini camp,
they'll kind of be on the same page.
there but during this conditioning period i think they're still evaluating the roster and kind of
planning things but i like i said i think dach's on the outside i think he's safe for the most part
that's where whole play barring something really unforeseen a couple things first we'll probably get
some idea of this when we see them doing their first on-field drills because dachs hill will line up
somewhere on the field when they do like seven-on-sevons or something and we'll see where he is yeah yeah
yeah yeah for sure the other the other thing
that occurs to me as Jalen Davis,
right now he is a roster lock, I think.
Like today, no other moves made.
I think that he's, like,
even if somebody beats him out to playing the slot,
like he's your backup if he doesn't win the starting job right now.
Now, could there be a move made that makes him not a roster lock?
He's been on the practice squad for a lot of his career.
Absolutely.
But until that move happens.
Is he a lock because he doesn't really?
do special teams and that's where like if he doesn't if he's not your starting nickel i know they've
carried him in the past i like would they carry him i i think that that becomes a question because i think
dj ivy obviously tremendous special teams value uh josh newton would be the one that that you would
look at but i imagine newton would have the edge i just have a hard time seeing him losing the slot
battle right now oh for sure right now like today yes yeah yeah agreed and because of that
Like that that's what it is.
He has played special teams in the past, too.
I know he hasn't done it the last couple of years.
He hasn't been as active the last couple of years,
but 2023, 198 special teams, that's 2022, 98 special team snaps,
201, 105 special teams.
So those years, much more active on special teams.
So kick coverage, punt return, and field goal block units,
not on punt coverage units, which is a big one that stands out.
He only had six snaps on any punt coverage units in 2023.
Just looking at what pro football focus.
has charted for him on special teams in his career.
But from 21 to 23, played a good amount of special teams.
So if he works his way back into those units for Darren Simmons, of course, he has some
experience doing that in the past, just not as much this year, was on some kick coverage
in Week 18 of 2025.
That's all he did for kick coverage reps for Jalen Davis in 2025.
So at least there is some background there is all I would say, as far.
as Jalen Davis and special teams.
Yeah.
And that's it.
It could come down to that.
But for me,
if you're the Bengals,
like,
where are you best?
And if you find an outside guy,
and maybe it is Takario Davis.
If Takario Davis is awesome,
and he's one of your three best corners,
well,
then Dax may have to move inside.
Like,
there is a path.
That's the path.
It's like,
if it's get your best three on the field.
Yeah.
Would be great.
Like,
give me that problem all day long
where Dax has to,
because then if that's,
that's the case, then you're feeling really good about your secondary because of what you've seen from
Ticario. And I think once again, I've brought this up before. You can take the Leon Hall approach.
And when you are in base, Dax isn't coming off the field. He's going to play outside,
assuming he can handle that. There's no reason to think that he couldn't. And then when you need him to go into the nickel,
you can play it with matchups too. Like if you're playing against the team, like say Brock Bowers,
the Raiders, maybe you want Ticario Davis dealing with Brock Bowers. Maybe you don't. Maybe that
that's a match for you and still rather be Dax Hill.
But you get the idea, maybe Isaiah likely.
You want to match that with size and you want to use Ticario in that spot instead of Dax.
So it gives you some matchup flexibility as well if those guys are your best three corners.
Yeah, for sure.
And that would be great.
And it would be an awesome thing to happen.
I think that the Bengals think that that's possible, whether or not that's realistic or not.
we'll see you would love that if you could have a third rounder much like Dylan
Fairchild right like comes in makes it clear hey I'm ready to go now great great if their best
three corners are DJ Dax and Ticario then this should be a pretty darn good secondary and
I would love it but as of now I would pencil and Daxo on the outside yeah and I still
am a fan of that I know that that's not what he did in college he was at overhang defender in
college and he had that versatility.
He's just like not the size of the guys that are really good at that in the NFL.
I'm sure he could do it and they could put him in that role.
We haven't seen the Bengals execute that role at a high level and that includes trying
to play Dax in the slot in the past.
They have Kyle Dugger on the team and Ticario is even a bigger guy in terms of length
and height.
So those guys could be in more of that role.
We'll see where Jalen Davis fits in as well.
But how they use the slot as the slot position has evolved in the NFL with Kyle Dugger doing it in the past.
Nickyman Worry, obviously, last year was the one that everyone paid attention to.
But as that position has both the traditional slot corners and then these like versatile defenders like Kyle Hamilton and Nickyman Worry and that kind of player in that job doing different things,
it'll be really interesting to see how the Bengals use their personnel in that respect.
And maybe that does involve Dax Hill.
Maybe he stays outside.
And we'll start to get a better idea of that as the Bengals start lining up and doing some football drills, some seven-on-sevens and things like that in the coming weeks.
And we'll be keeping an eye on where Dax is as they do.
And where these rookies are, how they're fitting in.
That's still a topic I would like to cover James is how these rookies will fit in and what their initial roles will be as they get accustomed.
to life in the NFL and try to help the Bengals achieve their goals, as Joe Burrow would say,
this season.
And we'll get to that and so many other topics as a Bengals offseason continues rookie minicamp
coming up later this week as well.
But that's going to do it for this episode of the Lockdown Bengals podcast.
Until next time, thanks for listening.
Ho-Day and have a good one.
