Starting point is 00:00:00 Joe Burrell let the deep ball fly here on Friday on these fields right behind us. Let's get into some practice observations from the Bengals Friday practice. You are Locked on Bengals, your daily Cincinnati Bengals podcast. Part of the Locked on podcast network, your team every day. What up Bengals fans and welcome to another episode of the Locked on Bengals podcast. A little bonus episode out here outside of the practice fields down at Paycourt. I'm Jake Liskow. He's James Rupin. We're part of the Lockdown Podcast Network here on Lockdown Bengals,
Starting point is 00:00:40 covering your team every day. And today we're going to get to some quick hitters, a little bonus content for you here as the Bengals had a more laid back practice, let's say, a lot more special teams in there to break things up. But Joe Burrow really let the deep ball fly a couple times too. Yeah, he did. Absolutely. It was the story of the deep ball. It's a story of practice.
Starting point is 00:01:02 And it's the most deep balls he's thrown in a practice. this since dealing with this wrist injury and don't take my word for it or Jake Jake's word for it talk to multiple players that would say that and back that up and multiple guys saying how great Joe looked how locked in he was and this wasn't a pre-planned thing at least for the guys that were on offense dealing with that I think this might have been and maybe it was for Zach and Joe to be clear but they didn't go into this practice thinking hey Joe's going to throw a bunch of deep balls today. And that's from multiple units of talking to guys. But everyone gave the thumbs up, really excited for what they saw from Joe Burrow today, which was a deep ball to
Starting point is 00:01:45 Charlie Jones, where he gets enough separation against Josh Newton and then is able to adjust with the ball in the air. That has been all over social media. The Shedric Jackson deep ball off script, rolling out. I mean, he did it a bunch of different ways today. Yeah, we described that as a yolo ball as we were walking out talking about. I mean, that's a throw that you don't always see Joe Burrow. I don't know if we've ever really seen Joe Burrow make that particular throw in a game, rolling to his right near the sideline and just chucking it downfield, hit shed in stride behind 49ers, Jamar Chase. Yeah, good call. I mean, he's done things like it before, for sure. But I mean, across his body, deep downfield, behind the defense. And good for Shedric Jackson,
Starting point is 00:02:31 by the way on the receiving end of that one, got behind Mike Hilton and it was back-to-back plays, which made it very noticeable. The Charlie Jones play, that's his primary read on the play. That was a hit the back foot, one hitch, deep ball to Charlie Jones on the sideline and a great effort from Charlie. If you haven't seen the play
Starting point is 00:02:47 on social media, go seek it out to get the knee down in a contested catch situation. And I think that Burrow is feeling pretty confident in that wrist right now to take those kinds of deep ball throws. He mentioned that in his press conference yesterday with the amount of volume that's been on that wrist in the last couple of days here.
Starting point is 00:03:08 He's feeling pretty good about where things are at. For sure. Feeling good about where he's at physically and to do what he did today on the heels of yesterday, where it was intense, where we talked about the heat, the humidity. And it was a quick turnaround. That's the other element here. It's not like they had a full 24 hours. Practice was much earlier today. Started in the morning.
Starting point is 00:03:29 Joe is not necessarily a morning person. Spoiler alert. So for him to come out here and throw the ball like he did, it's huge. And we'll see what he does moving forward. But as of today, we're eight days away from him making his 2024 preseason debut. And so for him to unleash the deep ball without T. Higgins, by the way, T. Higgins was limited, did a little bit, but was really, really limited in what he did. So to do that, I think that's pretty clutch to see for this team and for Joe.
Starting point is 00:04:03 Yeah, and it was a big day for Charlie Jones too. I think in general, with the absence of T. Higgins, with the absence of Jamar Chase, with the absence of Jermaine Burton, who didn't practice after dealing with an ankle injury yesterday, he looked relatively okay out there when we saw him out there, was squatting, and there was pressure on the ankle, of course, when you get into that position, just to talk about the ankle itself. But for Charlie Jones and Andre Yoseva, and for the rest of these receivers,
Starting point is 00:04:29 including that Chedric Jackson play, there was a big opportunity for those guys to get additional work in with Joe Burrow, with the first team. Not that those guys weren't working with the first team before, but I think Charlie Jones in particular has stacked a couple of nice days in a row
Starting point is 00:04:42 talking about some skill players, and that was noticeable, punctuated by that deep ball today. For sure, Charlie had a great, his best practice of camp was Tuesday. Then he practiced well, clearly impressed Jake yesterday. And then today, obviously with the deep ball, multiple catches from Joe Burrow, continues to work with Joe Burrow.
Starting point is 00:05:01 So really, really good to see. There's some other practice takeaways. Well, I want to know one more thing on Charlie Jones was watching individuals, and this may be nothing. This just may mean that today this was what they chose to do. But I think every single ball Charlie Jones caught in individuals today was from Joe Burrow. So they have quarterbacks working on both sides of the field when they're doing those. Joe's throwing to one side. Jake Browning's throwing to the other side and every single ball for Charlie Jones today came from Joe Burrough.
Starting point is 00:05:30 So again, could mean nothing, but it could just be that today's the day they're working on things more, more intently. But as you said, James, there are some other practice takeaways. Pardon me as I look down at my notes here. I think I'm the only person out there taking notes with pen and paper. Jake's a nerd and I'm not going to let him tease him because this is a really short video. So stay tuned. Chuck Sizzle Sizzling. Get his practice notes.

Jake said he has a bunch of sizzle in his practice notes here. I can't read his handwriting.
Starting point is 00:07:02 So instead of me reading it to you, Jake, what notes you have? Yeah, I can hardly read my own handwriting. Is that Icarly? 11's early. 11's early. Looks like Icarly. Not thinking about Icarly on the practice field. Notice that Sheldon Rankins wasn't out there today.
Starting point is 00:07:19 There were a few vet days, so I don't think that's cause for alarm. There were some guys working on the rehab field and mentioned T. Higgins earlier. So some vet days. Amarius Mims was back at practice. So if you didn't see those updates on social media from James and myself, I think we both had tweets on that topic. Marius Mims was back out there. I thought he had a pretty good practice. I was watching kickoff returns early.
Starting point is 00:07:39 But one thing that really stood out when we get to the 11 on 11 and 7 on 7 work is today seemed like a day that the Bengals coaching staff really wanted to get a look at rookie corner fig Newton. And Josh Newton was out there with the ones rotating with Dax Hill at times, with DJ Turner at times. And even with Mike Hilton at times, working at all three corner spots. And it seemed like a day for him to get a long look at how he's playing early in camp and earned that opportunity perhaps yesterday after a strong showing in individual drills for himself. And it was interesting to see him get some work in with the number ones as they continue to rotate those guys.
Starting point is 00:08:15 Yeah, it is. And he's battling for the fourth cornerback job minimum, you know. And so you need another guy that can go outside. or maybe give you some depth at nickel and give you that. And so far he has been impressive and brings that level of physicality. And I think he's impressed the coaches with it not being too big from him from a knowledge standpoint. I don't think he's treading water from a scheme standpoint or anything like that. So the preseason is going to be big for him to show that he does belong.
Starting point is 00:08:49 But we saw this last year with DJ Ivy. You impress early. You press these veterans early. and you can end up contributing, even though you're a late rounder. And he didn't go as late as Ivy in the draft. They clearly believe in him. And not only do I think he's going to make the roster, but I do think he could push for playing time at some point this season,
Starting point is 00:09:06 which when you're a day three pick and we're talking on August 2nd about that, that's a win so far for Josh Noon. Yeah, we talked about the offense earlier. And so just wanted to shout out Josh because he was working so much with the ones. But that in and of itself is notable. The fact that they wanted to get that extra look at how he would perform with the number one unit going against a little bit of a higher end competition, some guys that are going to make the team a wide receiver. I think that is certainly a notable one.
Starting point is 00:09:37 Some other fun notes, Akim Butler talking about the second and third unit a little bit here. Notice his first motion into tight end and pass block rep. That's a small note, not terribly notable. He is working at wide receiver almost exclusive. but I thought it was kind of interesting to see him take that one rep where he motioned into tight end. Wide receiver for now. I'm just kidding. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:10:03 On the topic of tight ends, notice a fun two tight ends set with Mike Gaseki and Tanner Hudson. Tanner Hudson got the target on that play. Could see some 12 personnel featuring those two guys as obviously receiving tight ends, but perhaps there are some size mismatch kind of things they can do from a personnel perspective using 12 personnel, two tight ends on the field without Drew Sample. Outside of that, the standouts for me today, James, on the defensive side of the ball, where B.J. Hill, Joseph O.S.I.
Starting point is 00:10:31 And Vaughn Bill had a really nice diving pass break up on a, again, a bit of a yellow ball and extending the play kind of ball on the sideline to Charlie Jones, I believe. Was it Charlie from Joe Burrell? It was the Charlie. It was one of the really nice highlights of Vaughn this camp. And the secondary, one, they haven't been pushing the ball. super far downfield. So Gino Stone really hasn't been tested a ton. Had a PBU on Thursday. Confirm that with him today that he got a hand on that against Trent and Irwin deep downfield.
Starting point is 00:11:00 But Vaughn, and he probably gets sacked. BJ Hill probably sacks Burrow, but in practice, you let the play roll, see what happens. And it honestly was a great play by Burrow, pushes the ball downfield, and really nice play by bell to knock it away. And that's why he's out there. Those instincts, making great play. plays like that on the ball and he to me is firmly entrenched as that starting safety. You can really hear Vaughn more than anyone else on that defense communicate, although I did also hear and I don't know who it was. So the second team defense was out there and I heard somebody yelling dragon and they accurately identified the concept that the Bengals were running
Starting point is 00:11:38 on that half of the field. It was a slant flat combination. That is the dragon route combination. It was still a completed pass for the offense, but it was nice to hear the second team defense with that recognition as well. But the communication, from Von Bell is certainly notable. The veteran presence is palpable, and I don't say that terribly lightly. That's not something that I put a huge amount of stock in. But to summarize things, I really say that it was a back and forth day. There were the deep ball wins for the offense late in practice, but the defense had their sheriff stops as well. And like I said, Joseph Osai and B.J. Hill, both with a number of pressures and disruptive plays on the defensive front. So really back and
Starting point is 00:12:17 fourth practice today would be the summary. And those are all my notes. My notebook is now closed. Anything else to add? Yeah, plenty to add. One, better handwriting, handwriting class maybe. No, I'm just kidding. My handwriting sucks too. This is the Joe Burrow day. So if you're heading out to a family thing tomorrow, maybe you're coming down here to see Luke Combs and you see another Bengals fan, be like, yeah, Joe Burroughs dropping dimes at Bengals practice because he looked really good today. They're off tomorrow. We'll be back here Sunday. They will be back here Sunday. And we'll be covering it. So subscribe on YouTube, follow wherever you get your podcast. And I'm not going to sign us out. I'm just going to let Jake Liscoe do his patented outro. You know, you're talking about my
Starting point is 00:12:57 handwriting. I'm just impressed you're able to do this looking into the sun without a hat on. That's going to do it for this episode of the Lockdown Bengals podcast. Until next time, thanks for listening. Hoodey and have a good book.
