Locked On Bengals - Daily Podcast On The Cincinnati Bengals - Joe Burrow sends a clear message to Cincinnati Bengals' front office ahead of regular season finale in Pittsburgh

Episode Date: January 2, 2025

Joe Burrow sent a loud and clear message to Cincinnati Bengals brass in his midweek press conference this week: Stop letting great players walk, and start getting important contracts done early. Jake ...Liscow and James Rapien break down why Burrow's comments are fascinating as the Bengals' star QB continues to be vocal about key decisions in his media availability sessions. Plus, we get into a game preview for the Bengals' trip to face the Pittsburgh Steelers in Week 18 Saturday Night Football, where they should have an advantage - as usual - with their receivers against a questionable secondary, but will have their hands full with the Steelers' pass rush and need to sustain on defense against a team that overperformed against them earlier this season.Join the Locked On Bengals Insider Community! https://joinsubtext.com/lockedonbengalsFind and follow Locked On Bengals on your favorite podcast platforms:Apple Podcasts: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/locked-on-bengals-daily-podcast-on-the-cincinnati-bengals/id1159723162Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/7AObc0lh0WmQl5fJVgtajsGoogle Podcasts: https://podcasts.google.com/feed/aHR0cHM6Ly9mZWVkcy5tZWdhcGhvbmUuZm0vbG9ja2Vkb25iZW5nYWxz?sa=X&ved=0CAYQrrcFahcKEwio_sXtj8nuAhUAAAAAHQAAAAAQAgStitcher: https://www.stitcher.com/show/locked-on-bengals Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors!PrizePicksDownload the app and use code lockedonnfl to win $50 instantly when you play $5. Starting point is 00:00:00 In Joe Burrough's last pregame press conference of the year, he sent a very clear message to the Cincinnati Bengals front office about their player retention strategies. Starting point is 00:01:08 Today we're going to get started with Joe Burroughs press conference comments from earlier this week as you're listening to this episode a little bit later in the week. But due to the schedule, this is the first time you've had a chance to talk about it. And then we'll get to this final must-win game. We've called a lot of games must win for the Bengals this year. So fittingly, they finished the season with another one of those. But, James, there was nothing terrible. subtle about the way Joe Burrow talked about the Cincinnati Bengals' failures to get deals done
Starting point is 00:01:40 early with key players in his press conference earlier this week. It's fascinating comments from Joe before this final game of the season. Yeah, very fascinating. I mean, the fact that he was willing to offer what he did, not just about T. Higgins, and we can discuss that, but about the front office in general. One thing that we've talked about, maybe he just listens to the Locked on Bengals, by the way. Wouldn't be shocked. Joe Bro is a big Locked on Bengals listener,
Starting point is 00:02:10 especially in the offseason when he has some time. But in all seriousness, everyone has said how you need to get these deals done early. If you had been aggressively trying to get T done two years ago when he was extension eligible, nearly two years ago, then you don't have this problem. You're playing on the franchise tag, and you're wondering if it could fit, if he could stay.
Starting point is 00:02:32 Jesse Bates is obviously another key example, prime example of that, of draft, develop, shoulda, coulda, would or retain, didn't retain. And if you had just been aggressive after year three, like you were with Joe, by the way, getting a deal done, then you can make all of it fit. And Jesse Bates is still playing safety here. T. Higgins is under a long-term deal. Jamar Chase would already be under a long-term deal. He would be the other example.
Starting point is 00:02:58 And even though I'm optimistic that Jamar gets a deal done, it's a little harder when you don't do it early. And so we all know that. Our everydayers know that. Most Bengals fans and analysts know that. And so for Joe Burrow to go out and say that is that's a pretty powerful message to the front office. And really now we're talking about a month, almost an entire month going back to last month following that Monday night game, a win over Dallas. where he's like, yeah, T, we want T back. And since then, Joe has been willing to be a bit more outspoken.
Starting point is 00:03:36 And that does put pressure on the front office. There's no doubt about it. They feel it. I think they know it and are certainly aware that the most important man in the building, most important person in the building, to be very clear, Joe Burrow, the comments that he's made over the past month, including the ones earlier this week. Yeah, and there were also some specific comments about T. Higgins, that we'll get to here in just a second.
Starting point is 00:03:59 But what I find so fascinating about it, and that's how I framed it initially, is the specific verbiage around, that's why you try to get those deals done early. And there's nothing, like I said, there's nothing subtle about that. That is talking about those three key players, T. Higgins, Jamar Chase,
Starting point is 00:04:20 those are the guys still with the team. And I have to believe that Joe's thinking about Jesse Bates when he's thinking about this as well. But even if you ignore Jesse Bates, talking about it getting harder to do these deals now that you're closer to free agency for Jamar Chase and you've gone through a franchise tag, you're already for T. Higgins, assuming that they're going to approach those negotiations again this offseason, which is the message you're hearing largely from Joe, but we'll get to that. those deals not only get harder, but they get more expensive, which is doing yourself a disservice as a team that is trying to fit things in under the salary cap. And the prime example of getting deals done early that we have always talked about, and I'm sure there's more examples than just this one team.
Starting point is 00:05:10 But the Philadelphia Eagles are at the forefront, it seems, of getting extensions done with their key good players, as soon as possible on a regular basis. And that leads to them having some of the best players in the NFL under contract ahead of them getting multiple contracts that will reset those numbers. So A.J. Brown, a great example of this. Multiple deals come after that that elevate the ceiling in the wide receiver market. And it goes for a number of players on that Eagles team from the offensive line
Starting point is 00:05:47 to the defensive line. The obvious advantages of getting deals done early with the ever-constant inflation of the salary cap in the NFL, market resetting from numerous players getting deals and the proclivity of agents and players to always want to get more than the last guy did is going to cost the Bengals money. There will be a financial hit to waiting
Starting point is 00:06:14 because a salary cap will go up and they're going to try to index Jamar Chase's deal from Jamar Chase's agent's perspective to the salary cap and say, well, if Justin Jefferson got 13.7% of the salary cap last year, we want that to be what Jamar Chase gets this year. And guess what? 13.7 of 295 million is a lot more than 13.7% of 250 million. Sure. So very basic math there that the Bengals are costing themselves money with. Yep. And when it comes to getting deals done early, what do you need to do? You need to give guaranteed money. And that's what it comes back to. That's why Jamar Chase isn't done. That's it. It's the guaranteed money that the Bengals were willing to do or not do. And they were willing to break their structure a little bit. You've got to break it a lot of it for Jamar. No doubt. You're going to have to break it something for tea. He's not coming back for the first year of guaranteed money and that's it. And so, So that's something, like there's a meaning there from what Joe was saying, and he's saying. And what I think is interesting, you mentioned the comments about T saying that, you know, and he was honest.
Starting point is 00:07:26 He was how bothered he would be if T wasn't back, if Saturday night was their last game together. And I actually loaded in the clip here. So here's Joe Burrow, the full-length clip. in the exchange here. Yeah, whenever a great player leaves, you wish you could have found a way to keep them. You don't want to make a living out of letting great players leave the building. And, you know, I think that's why you got to do everything you can to get those deals done early.
Starting point is 00:08:08 And so that's the clip we were talking about. I thought it was T as well. That's what happens when I load clips in on the fly. But the point is you got to get deals done early. They didn't get it done early with T. And yet Joe is making this point to keep T. And any time he's brought up, it's the same message. It's been the same message.
Starting point is 00:08:28 And he said he hasn't really thought about Saturday night being his last game with T and Jammar in a Bengals uniform. He said, quote, it's obviously a possibility, not one that I'm excited about. And then he hesitated, Jake. and I do think it matters that he hesitated, thought about it and said, but that's not in the plans, I would say. And that's the key point that you're focused on. Yeah, I think that throwing that in there does a couple of things.
Starting point is 00:08:54 One, if it's not in the plans for it to be the last time that those guys play together, that suggests that there's an alternative plan that would keep them together. And maybe that's just Joe Burroughs plan. Maybe that's some concept that only exists in Joe Burroughs had. But if it were, only in Joe Burroughs had I be a little bit surprised for him to say it the way he said it in that press conference. The other thing that that does is it once again publicly affirms the face of the franchise, the guy that's dragging them as best you can into this final must-win game with slim playoff hopes alive, reiterating his stance that T. Higgins is a need. T. Higgins should be part of this team in the future. And that is the plan for me, even if it's not some other plan that exists that he's aware of.
Starting point is 00:09:48 The plan for me involves keeping T and categorizing him, obviously, is one of those great players. You don't want to let leave and one of those deals you should have gotten done early. And that's why I'm going into this offseason, whether it begins Saturday night, Sunday, or in a month and a half, expecting the Bengals to get something done with T. Higgins. And I think that's fair to say. Again, Joe is the most important person in the building. When he keeps tripling and quadrupling down on this, all right. So I expect it to get done. We'll see if it gets done.
Starting point is 00:10:22 This is probably the fifth time, six time we've talked about this, Jake. It certainly won't be the last year. But we do have a game to get to as well. A must-win game for the Bengals if they'll keep their season alive. We'll start to discuss that coming up next. Today's show is brought to you by prize picks. It's playoff time. And if you're like me, you want to make the most of these final weeks of football action,

Starting point is 00:13:00 and however many of the Bengals play the rest of the year, whether it's Saturday or not, the reason I would be confident going into any of these games is because of Joe, Jamar, and T. because you have that trio on offense that's just kind of leading the way. And let's say Jamar gets taken out. Well, then you still have T taken out of the game with double teams or whatever. And I'm not saying that's going to happen on Saturday, but going into these games,
Starting point is 00:13:25 these prime time, it's their fifth road primetime game of the year. It obviously starts with Joe, but the Jamar T, that's just so frightening for opponents. And you know, you can picture, especially the people that have worked. watched hard knocks. Mike Tomlin talking about 9, 1, and 5 just being so tough to contain and stop. Yeah, and that's obviously where it starts for the Pittsburgh Steelers and what keeps the offense going for the Cincinnati Bengals, especially with the Chase Brown question mark this week. We still don't know what's going on with him as of the time of recording this. Perhaps by the time you're listening to this, you've gotten some additional information. But there are a lot of
Starting point is 00:14:05 questions in the air around this Bengals team on offense from an injury. perspective this week that we don't have answers on right now. That will certainly impact the game as well. But Joe Burrow T. Higgins, Jamar Chase, the engine that makes the Bengals go. And against the Pittsburgh Steelers, it's a pretty good engine because the last time these teams played, those guys pretty well abuse those Pittsburgh corners. And Mick and Fitzpatrick is still back there in the secondary. And there are certainly strengths on this Pittsburgh defense, but they are not a cornerback. And when Joe Burrow, I'd identifies cornerback mismatches with his receivers.
Starting point is 00:14:44 And Zach Taylor is thinking about his game plan. And Dan Pitcher is thinking about the game plan for a week. What have we talked about this team doing for a long time? We haven't talked about, you know, the need to get things outside of structure for a while. The Bengals offense has been doing well during this five-game winning streak. And even before that, it wasn't all the same stuff we were talking about earlier in the year where Joe was creating everything off script. There's still some of that.
Starting point is 00:15:09 Don't get me wrong. He's still creating a lot. The offensive line is a part of that. But this offense is primarily driven, maybe not primarily, often driven by Jemar Chase or T. Higgins, getting isolation matchups and winning isolation matchups. And they should do that this week. That is why you start with those guys, obviously, in any conversation. But especially against the Pittsburgh Steelers this week, if you're looking for a weakness on that defense, it is a cornerback. And I think we really saw that play out the first time these teams play.
Starting point is 00:15:43 Yeah, I would agree. I think that's why they were. I mean, they crawled back into that game. They were down. It was eerily similar to the Eagles game. And then they willed themselves back into it. And if Josh Newton or anyone on the Interimus defense realizes that Justin Fields is going to keep the ball on third and four, they get the ball back to Joe. Like, I went back and looked this week.
Starting point is 00:16:07 It's like, man, that was like. such a huge moment after the defense got beat like a draw mall game long as this offense kept them in it and gave them a shot. So you need that early on for these guys to set a toe. And if they can do that with less than 100% of Marius Mims and less than 100% Orlando Brown Jr. Or Orlando Brown Jr. and I think it might be Cody Ford at right tackle. I saw him get some reps in practice this week. I think that would be interesting if that's the case, especially with Devin Cochran, because that means that Cordell Volso won't be at Lefgar, like the whole thing.
Starting point is 00:16:48 It impacts a few different spots if you go that route. So we'll see. Hopefully it is a Marius, and he feels confident. It's going to be super cold, the broken hand. That's tough. It's a tough ask. And so we'll see. But 22 degrees at kickoff, that is such a big element to this because you know Joe's
Starting point is 00:17:08 going to get a hit. He's going to try to extend plays. He's going to try to do all those things. And the way for the Steelers, the path for the Steelers to disrupt that is T.J. Y is the rest of that pass rush. It's not the cornerbacks. And so the pressure to me, from a receiver standpoint, is find a way to get open quick and dominate the game. And so hopefully Joe can hit that ball out fast and you guys still make big plays and are able to do what we've seen them do for me.
Starting point is 00:17:38 most of the year after the catch. So we'll see, but there's so many levels to that in layers because you don't want to ask Cody Ford to block or make Joe extend on every play. And there's a scenario where that's the case, Cody Ford to block for three plus seconds or something of that nature. And it's still a fierce pass rush from Pittsburgh. That's what we're talking about, right? The reason the Bengals end up losing that game is T.J. Watt does this thing. Joe loses a ball. There's also an interception in that game that Joe throws. But this starts with the pressure from the Steelers, and that's where they're looking this week.
Starting point is 00:18:18 And Mario Smith's playing with the club on his hand against CJ Watt doesn't sound very fun. Cody Ford, starting at right tackle against T.J. Lott also doesn't sound very fun. But you also have Alex Hysmith, Cam Hayward on that team. And honestly, the opportunity for Pittsburgh to take a look at that Denver tape and see how Denver kept Joe in the pocket really well and took away those escape planes. And one of the big reasons that he ends up getting sacked seven times in that game
Starting point is 00:18:47 is because Denver does a great job of having somebody free or in those escape routes that Joe Burrow has taken so often this year. And so if Pittsburgh also makes that adjustment in their pass rush plan and keep somebody available to contain Burrow in the pocket, that makes his job much harder and makes the offensive lines job much harder. And it's already going to be, I can imagine challenging to watch at times how the interior line deals with Cam Hayward and how whoever's playing right tackle deals with T.J. Watt. And they're going to have double teams for Watt, sure.
Starting point is 00:19:26 And hopefully that helps. And you get Orlando Brown on the other side. And Orlando is able to reprise his performance last week. and that's the foundation of the past walking plan, I'm sure, but it's still going to be very challenging for those guys. And if you're talking about the path or the Steelers to disrupt the Bengals on offense, which they managed to do early in that game
Starting point is 00:19:47 but weren't able to keep up, a lot of that is how do they disrupt Joe before the ball comes out of his hand. Yeah, no doubt. I mean, that's it. That's the, if there's the plan, it's not for the Steelers defense. to try to contain this offense.
Starting point is 00:20:05 And Joe Burrow, after the win over Denver said they're the best offense in the league, they're going to need the best offense in the league again on Saturday night if they're going to beat Pittsburgh. Part of that means, by the way, not turning the ball over the way they did the first time. No doubt about it. No doubt about it. And at the same time, this defense, well, they couldn't stop Russell Wilson, who threw for 414 in the first matchup. They're going to need to force some turnovers and not give up 400. 14 passing yards to Mr. Wilson.
Starting point is 00:20:36 We'll dive into that side coming up now. Today show is brought to you by Fandle. America's number one sports book. And the Bengals, well, they're trying to win their fifth straight game. They're trying to finish with a winning record for a fourth straight season for just the second time in franchise history. A big reason I bring up those turnovers on the offensive side of the ball as we transition to talk about the defenses is because that was a big difference in the game. The Bengals even had a pick six to start that game.
Starting point is 00:21:39 And then proceeded to not stop the Steelers once until the fourth quarter, the only punt they forced in that entire game. And immediately after that punt, the Bengals fumble and Pittsburgh Steelers return it for a touchdown. The Peyton Wilson. 41 to 24 lead. Peyton Wilson, yes. the returner of that fumble. So you need to take care of the ball if you're the offense on the one hand.
Starting point is 00:22:08 This goes back to before this winning streak when complimentary football just wasn't there. When the defense did manage to get stops, the offense wouldn't capitalize on the opportunities too often. And it wasn't just the defense's issue, right? But the defense also couldn't get enough stops. The only drives on which the Steelers didn't score points were a missed field goal attempt that was blocked by Joseph Osai. to start the second half, which definitely gave the Bengals some life, big play, right? That punt that I mentioned, a couple of drives later,
Starting point is 00:22:38 that leads to the fumble six, the next drive for the Bengals, and then the end of game, when they didn't need to score. They were able to kneel it out. That's the only drives for the Steelers that didn't end in points. So regardless of how well Joe Burrow and the offense were playing, if the defense repeats that kind of performance,
Starting point is 00:23:00 where they can't stop Russell Wilson and the Steelers really at all, or maybe only once. Yeah. That's not a recipe for success. So you need to see them continue this confidence-building stretch that we've seen from them lately and hope that that translates here in a second matchup against the Steelers' offense, which is not a 44-point offense. No.
Starting point is 00:23:26 Or 37. You should do both. defense scoring points. You should do better than that against the Steelers' offense. It is below average on paper and objectively. Yeah, it is below average, which is why, much like last week, this week, all eyes are on Lou. If Russell Wilson Thursday for 414, they may make Lou drive back to get his stuff. Like, his stuff might just get sent to his house, but like, hey, man, you can't come back on the plane.
Starting point is 00:23:53 And I'm kidding. They wouldn't do that to him. but like jobs are still on the line here as much as we talk about the playoff scenarios and how the Bengals need the Jets to beat the dolphins and Carson Wentz to somehow lead the chiefs past the Broncos if the defense does what it did on December 1st then heads are going to roll and they still may roll anyway by the way I'm not saying they won't but that cannot happen and so like that performance is as bad as any and so it goes back to my quick game thing would remain, you know, like, be ready for that quick game because that's what
Starting point is 00:24:30 the Steelers are going to try to do is quick game and over the top. And those are the two things. And so George Pickens, Calvin Austin over the top, quick game to anybody else, do all the basic stuff. And so I want to see a buttoned up defense. If you get physically beat, right, but you're in the right spot and George Pickens just skies over Josh Newton for a catch. I can live with that. I can't live with, oh, man, miss tackle, just on an obvious play that you should be in the right position and you should take the right angle and you should be able to make the play. So hopefully we see a more buttoned up disciplined Bengals defense because that's what's led to some of these turnovers, not all of them, but some of them. If you're in the right spot and you're
Starting point is 00:25:17 you're able to deflect the pass, then who knows? Maybe someone's going to be there to make the play. And it's such a huge thing. Turnovers. I remember talking to Zach Taylor right before that Pittsburgh game. And this was not an on-camera thing. So no one saw it. And we're like, hey, what's going to decide the game?
Starting point is 00:25:37 And he said turnovers. And so that's a big thing for sure. The only way that matters is if the defense can just get off the field in general. Maybe that is with turnovers. It doesn't have to be with punts. Turnovers are better. We'll see if they can do it. Opportunism is totally fine.
Starting point is 00:25:54 You give up 400 yards, but you have three takeaways. You can win that game. It's not ideal, but it's okay. You can win that game. We've seen them win games like that. We've seen defenses historically win games like that. It's not always pretty, but if you can create havoc at the right moment or pull the right lever, push the right button at the right time,
Starting point is 00:26:14 and get that turnover, then you can. can win that way. So can the complimentary pass rushers get to Russell Wilson and not let Russ play a throwback game where he's making plays outside of structure, right? Can they do a better job disrupting there? I think George Pickens is going to cause problems, right? I think that the Steelers running game is going to cause problems for this defense. That's the track record for both of those units and players in those matchups. But if you can find somebody opposite Trey Hendrickson, to try to help make some havoc in that backfield. Can Joseph Osai get a hand on an arm to create another interception kind of thing, right?
Starting point is 00:26:57 And in order to do that, like you said, you got to have guys in the right places, can't have coverage busts in Week 18 because you're miscommunicating and one half of the cornerback backfield doesn't know whether you're passing things off or running with crossers. You know, you can't make those kinds of mistakes again here with the stakes. And the time of the season, seeing those sorts of mental mistakes late in the season would be unpleasant. And so if you can get those things, as you said, buttoned up straightened away, then you can have some confidence and some things are going in the right direction.
Starting point is 00:27:32 And we still have the same questions about some of these players who continue to play for future roster spots and roster competitions and stuff like that that we've been watching throughout this late season run. Yeah, there's a lot of guys. I think Chris Jenkins, he's a little nicked up his knee. He needs a bounceback game. I think that that's fair to say. I think some of these young guys, it would be nice for Miles Murphy to make a, maybe make one of those splash plays.
Starting point is 00:27:58 Little strip sack would be nice for Miles Murphy just to get his, because we've seen some pressure, but get his name in that box scored in a big way. And honestly, the other thing we've talked, everyone's focused on Joe Burrow and Jamar Chase and the records they're pursuing. I mean, 5,000 yards, triple crown, all that stuff. Trey Hendrickson needs a couple of sacks here to lead the NFL in sacks. I know he wants to. And so if he's going to get there, you could use a couple of sacks going Trey's way this week.
Starting point is 00:28:27 Yeah, and the last time these teams played, Trey did not get home for a sack. Four pressures, according to PFF charting in that game on 28 past rushes. And just getting the Steelers into situations where those guys can pin their ears back. Yep. Would be helpful. McKinley Jackson, can he continue? to build on three straight, solid to great performances. You know, some of the plays he's made lately, he's only playing 20 or so snaps a game.
Starting point is 00:28:54 But if he can continue to flash that way, give us some confidence in McKinley Jackson for the future there, the way he's been having some nice late season performances. And you're talking about Miles Murphy, but what about Cedric Johnson? How do those staff counts play out? That's one of the fascinating elements this week is who are they putting on the field in those past rushing situations? Is it Cedric Johnson the way that he was out there a little bit more to finish the game in week 17? Or is a Miles Murphy in those spots? That's another interesting facet.
Starting point is 00:29:22 I joked with Cedric. I was walking to practice on Wednesday and joked with Cedric because it was kind of chilly. It's the weather turned here, Jake, from December 31st to January 1st where it was like 50 and unseasonably warm to like 30. And it felt 20 and it was really cold. They were practicing outside. So we're walking out to practice. And you could just hear him, like, kind of shiver it, like, not shivering, but just like, like adjusting his body.
Starting point is 00:29:50 And it's going to be super cold on Saturday night. And I was like, hey, man, it's warm out here. And he was like, yeah, I wish. So he's going to have to get ready because it's going to be even colder on Saturday night. And I'm sure he will be, by the way. But it definitely felt colder because it was so unseasonably warm here over the past week or so. Yeah, you haven't had the acclimatization period. That's right.
Starting point is 00:30:12 It's just that sharp change. We will be with you after the Saturday night football game. Either way, when we know whether Sunday will matter, whether we're going to be watching on the edge of our seats, some of those late Windows Sunday games that the Bengals may or may not need, depending on how Saturday goes. And we'll have those takeaways for you here on Lockdown Bengals after the game. Until then, thanks for watching this episode, Houda,
Starting point is 00:30:42 and have a game. Thank you.
