Starting point is 00:00:00 After hearing from Joe Burrow for the first time in quite a while this on season, it's safe to say, Burrow is bullish on his Bengals in 2026. You are locked on Bengals, your daily Cincinnati Bengals podcast. Part of the Locked on Podcast Network, your team every day. What up, Bengals fans, and welcome to another episode of the Lockdown Bengals podcast. He's James Rapine and I'm Jake Lisco. And today we heard from Joe Burrow for the first time this off season, and the first time he's had a press conference since the Bengals went out and signed Brian Cook
Starting point is 00:00:40 and traded for Dexter Lawrence and signed Boye Maffei and Jonathan Allen and got through the NFL draft and made all the moves they made, brought Joe Flacco back. The moves we've been talking about on this podcast for, well, getting to the point that we've been talking about them for months. March was two months ago at this point when free agency went down. And this is the first time you've heard from Burroughs since then. And he invoked talk about the Super Bowl and the Bengals all-time passing touchdown. record being in play this year, even though he's 50 touchdown passes off that mark, if it gives you any idea of where Joe Burrow is setting his sights for his own performance this
Starting point is 00:01:17 year and talked a lot about what the front office got done this off season, talked about the talent level being as high as it's ever been in his time with the Cincinnati Bengals. We're going to dive into that claim a little bit more later this week, but a lot of Joe Burrow comments and answers to questions to get to James Rupin, and you were there, of course. What was the number one thing that stood out to you as you sat down in Paycor, talking with Joe Burrow today? How encouraged he was with these off-season moves and everything that we had read, right, whether it's that little magazine that the everydayers remember Vanity Fair or Jeff Hobson in Bengals.com,
Starting point is 00:02:01 which is anything but little vanity fair. It's one of those where you, you're like, all right, I think this is how it's going to go, but is it? And some of what he said was similar. Some of what he said was expanding upon what we've seen. But the thing that I think he said multiple times is how fired up he was, fired up when the Dexter Lawrence trade happened. I asked him if I would have told him in January. And I was the one who asked him about the free. agent quote free agency is paramount and we need to be aggressive and all those things that quote
Starting point is 00:02:34 that was used over and over by everybody because it was Joe Burrough saying they better be aggressive well he said yeah if you would have told me this in January I would have been fired up and excited and he ended every single one with right but now we got to go out and do it and I think that's where he's focused and for the everydayers and for the Bengals fans that are tuning in because they want to know about Joe Burrow I think the encouraging thing can be Joe Burrow feels like like he has a really real chance to win a championship this year. And he's always going to think he can go out and win because he's Joe Burrow and that's the natural thing. Like he has that in him, right?
Starting point is 00:03:13 But there are levels to it and to feel like you can go out there and win and to feel like you have the talent that's going to be able to go out there and not just compete for a championship but go win a championship, I think it's two different levels. So the main takeaway is just how encouraged Joe is with the roster editions. And what it could mean for his future, their future, the significance of the Lawrence, I mean, there's so many ripple effects from it. But you just got to look at the front office and say, man, you guys have done a hell of a job
Starting point is 00:03:42 because I do think that Joe Burroughs tune, his mindset has shifted. And I've said it a thousand times on this podcast. He's the most important person in the building. And so for that to be the case is huge. Yeah, he talked about the front office. He's talked about the criticism from fans, from me. And he said, hopefully we can put that behind us and move on, essentially. Like we don't need to talk about the front office not doing enough right now, says Joe Burrow.
Starting point is 00:04:10 So while we can still talk about some of the things that they didn't do and we're going to continue to monitor the linebackers, he talked about the linebackers a little bit today as well. And that one stands out. I know there are fans out there that want to talk about wide receiver three and are very interested in that conversation. We've talked about swing tackle, but the moves that they made to. to reiterate this for the, how many times do you think we've said it? The moves that they made are significant moves. The move for Dexter Lawrence is a rare move.
Starting point is 00:04:40 And Joe Burrow acknowledged that as well. And I think that it's interesting to think about his audience when he's saying, okay, it's time to let off the front office here. We have been critical of the front office, right? Media's been critical in the front office. Joe Burrow says, it's not time to be critical of the front office right now, guys. and he's talking, I think, to the media and to fans to some extent, right? But he's also talking to the veterans on this team, I think.
Starting point is 00:05:08 And he's talking to himself. He's talking to the locker room. The front office gave us what we need, guys. Now we got to go do it. And that's why I think he kept coming back to that. He's always going to come back to that. That's always been his mindset. Talk is talk.
Starting point is 00:05:23 That's one thing. And it's always, we're going to go do the hard work. That's always been his mentality, right? but it is interesting to think about who he's talking to. And I don't think it's only media and fans when he says it's time to move on from some of our criticisms as the way the roster has been put together and the moves to front office has or hasn't made. Yeah, it's go, it's, I'm not sure if he prays or not,
Starting point is 00:05:50 but he's prayed for times like this, right? The coaching staff has prayed for this where it's like, all right, well, now it's on us because now we do have the talent. Now we do have the ability. now is the roster perfect no but should they be up there with the top teams in the league absolutely and what have we said what do we say in 2024 with the flawed bengals team that had no defense and could have used jakelis go on the back end instead of gino's note what do we say we said if you let joe in oh boy good luck all he needs is a chance in a one and done scenario you never
Starting point is 00:06:20 know like joe burrow jimar chase and you just start looking at it it's like man that's scary What if they can go back to the way it was in 2022, when they were rolling going into the playoffs, when things were rolling, when for a lot of the 10-game winning streak that they were on, they were the best team in football. And that's what I think is interesting, is like this roster is,
Starting point is 00:06:51 it feels much different than it did in January when a month prior, guess what we were saying? Hey, if you let them in, going into that bills, if you let them in, like they got Joe Burrow and they got, but they were just so flawed
Starting point is 00:07:05 that you're like, okay, well, again, Joe, Joe's going to feel like he has a chance in any game, but how realistic was it, honestly? And unless he played perfect,
Starting point is 00:07:18 wasn't realistic. Now, does he think he's going to play perfect? Sure, he's talking about 50 touchdowns. And just to be, clear because I looked it up while I was doing it. It was funny. It was like a podcast where we throw around stats and then I look it up. I'm like,
Starting point is 00:07:30 all right, Joe, I got you. He's 47 touchdown passes away from tying Andy Dalton for the franchise record, which is kind of insane like this soon. And no, it's just insane that he's only 47 away in my mind. No, I know. It's a lot of touchdown passes that he's thrown in a small amount of time.
Starting point is 00:07:47 Considering the time he's missed as well. And then I said, so 47 to tie, 48 to break. And he looked, he's doable. doable. So that's where his confidence level is. And that's where it should be. Because Joe Burrow, we should be thinking about MVP's right in that element of it. And I think he's very much aware going into his age 30 season. He'll be 30 in December. And his age was brought up a few times by him. I think he's like, all right, now it's go time. It's time for me to be the best
Starting point is 00:08:17 in the world. That should be his mindset. When we look back at 2024, that incredibly frustrating year when that was the talk that you're bringing up like, man, if they get in, look out. Because you look at their losses and it's like the one point loss to Kansas City in week two, the one point loss to Baltimore in week 10, the touchdown loss to the Chargers in week 11, a bit of a different game there, six point loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers in week 13, all these one score losses throughout the schedule, the week five, three point overtime loss to Baltimore, a bunch of games that they should have won, right? In that period, a time where they just couldn't close out, whether it was the offense making mistakes,
Starting point is 00:08:57 the defense making mistakes. They're losing games at a ridiculous clip when scoring 30 plus points compared to the rest of the NFL in the last two seasons. And so that's why we've talked about, man, can the defense be average? Can they give up 28 instead of 35 in a couple of these games? And then you win some of these games that you didn't win, you know? And that's where it's interesting to think about, and we're going to dig into this. like I said, we're going to dig into this tomorrow.
Starting point is 00:09:24 We're going to dig into just how big the talent disparity is this year to those years or this year to the last times they were in the playoffs. But if Joe's talking about the talent this way, it's pretty easy to extrapolate a defense that's at least average, right? And it's pretty easy to think about this offense reprising what they did in 2024 when Joe Burrow threw 43 touchdown passes nearly 5,000 yards and had an MVP caliber season. And that's the kind of conversation we're having now. which feels a lot better than some of the conversations we've had in recent years. Yeah, 48, by the way, doable if they just get a couple more stops, right?
Starting point is 00:10:03 Just get off the field a little quicker. If he gets a couple more possessions, a couple more turnovers. Gino Stone makes a few more tackles. You know, it's never going to get old. Gino Stone tackle jokes. I think they will, though, because I think we're going to forget about it. That's what I hope is that we forget about it so much with the addition of Brian Cook. and that maybe is where we go next.
Starting point is 00:10:22 Joe Burrow once again praising Brian Cook, that we just don't have to talk about it anymore. You know what I mean? Yeah, because it's not like I'm saying like Jackson, Carmen, Miss blocks or Germain Burton missed meetings. Like you just hope it,
Starting point is 00:10:35 it's so far in the past. It comes up sometimes, but not like it's different, you know? Yes. Yeah. So yeah, there you go. Let's put it.
Starting point is 00:10:41 Hey, Brian, Brian Cook and Jordan Battle. Help us forget. We'll talk about Cook coming up next. Support for today's episode is brought to you by Square. Well, Square is going to help you take payments, track sales, manage inventory, and keep your business running smoothly. without the juggle of a bunch of disconnected tools. And you'll get $200 off square hardware. Again, that's square.com slash go slash locked on NFL. Run your business smarter with Square. started today. All right, Jake, let's keep it moving here with Brian Cook. I love it when things
Starting point is 00:12:33 line up. And boy, oh, boy, has the Brian Cook stuff just lined up where I noticed this little interaction last week. Then Joe Burrow talks to Jeff Hobson. And then again, multiple times on Wednesday, goes out of his way. And I do think it goes out of his way to mention Brian Cook in his leadership, in his presence and setting a standard, which is a new part of the quote, it doesn't feel like, like they've added a bunch of safeties, right? Nick Scott and Gino Stone are the biggest names, but they brought back Von Bell. Like, they've added free agent safeties in the past. This feels like a guy who can lead, but also has game and can also still play.
Starting point is 00:13:18 Obviously, he's in his prime at 27 years old. And multiple times bro called him the top free agent safety. I don't know if he watches us or not, but it did feel like his thoughts really aligned with what we thought about Brian Cook and what Brian Cook could add and has already added to this defense. Yeah, and we were talking about the leadership aspect as well, right? One, yeah, he called him the best free agent safety. He also called Dexter Lawrence best defensive tackle in the league in his opinion. So when you get two guys that Joe Burrow thinks for the best available at their respective positions, one in free agency, one by a trade. Yeah, it makes sense that he's going to be a pretty happy guy about that.
Starting point is 00:13:56 And we'll talk about how involved he was or wasn't. He was asked about did you issue not an ultimatum? What was the word used? Essentially a list of demands like this, a mandate. This is what has to get done this off season to the front office. So we can talk about that as well. But when it comes with Brian Cook, you talked about it setting a standard for the moment he arrived that he's going to hold the rest of the defense too.
Starting point is 00:14:19 And we talked about this actually a little bit on the squad show because Art Valer. who's with us on the squad show James. Obviously, coach in the NFL, talked about from experience. You cannot lead in this league if you're not getting results on the field. You can't just be a guy who's leading in the locker room. It's why coaches, there's obviously leadership with coaches, right? But it's different from player leaders because you're not doing it on the football field. And the way that you can be an elite leader in the NFL is you are both a leader in terms of your personality traits.
Starting point is 00:14:52 you're producing on the football field. So if there's a standard being set by Brian Cook that Joe Burrow is noticing and has noticed from the moment Brian Cook arrived, then that is translating on the field in some way, shape, or form. And they obviously haven't competed yet. Joe Burrow talked about that as well, talked about being excited to get to the competitive part of the offseason program in OTAs in a couple of weeks. But a noticeable standard from Brian Cook here, identified by Joe Burrow that you talked about
Starting point is 00:15:20 last week that we've talked about leading into this episode as well. So it's going to be very exciting to see just what that level is they get on the field from Cook, given what they've endured the last few years at the safety position. And the thing I like, I asked another veteran about Brian because we were just talking about guys and Jordan walked by and I asked about Jordan and he said good things about Jordan. But then I asked about Brian and that this guy's been here, done that with Jordan, been on his team for multiple years, been teammates for multiple years. So you would expect them to have a good rapport.
Starting point is 00:15:53 But I asked about Brian, and it was the same thing. I think he caught him goofy. And you could tell, like, it feels like he's, he's been part of the locker room for a long time. And this guy isn't necessarily a starter. He's going to play alongside Brian Cook. I would expect him to make the team, all those. But it was just funny that same vibe, same thing. completely different interaction.
Starting point is 00:16:20 There's no way this guy saw what Burrough said, at least in the press conference when it came to Brian Cook. And I didn't mention that either. And it's just how quickly he's – and by the way, that's how it should be. You're 27-year-old with two rings. You're a leader at UC. And maybe that impact in Kansas City was there, and we just didn't necessarily feel it. Because Brian isn't like a loud, boisterous guy. Whole mess around and joke clearly.
Starting point is 00:16:44 But it's not like he's the loudest guy in the locker room or anything like that. that from my couple of times around him. So I think that that doesn't mean he's not vocal either. I definitely think he's got a good rapport, but it feels like he's been here for quite some time. And maybe it's like Orlando from that standpoint, because Orlando really quickly got from Kansas City came here and settled right in and fit and culture-wise was in it.
Starting point is 00:17:11 And maybe Brian Cook's going to be that same way. And they really, they just not have not had that since Jesse. at that position with any of the guys, including Jordan, including Dax, that have been that leader, have been that standard setter. And so hopefully that that'll be the case with Brian. Yeah,
Starting point is 00:17:28 that is the start that he's gotten off to. And I think the impact that we're going to see from the guys they've added, and Burrow talked about getting better in a number of different places, went out and aggressively made it happen, filled some holes that we had from, years past got better at a lot of positions.
Starting point is 00:17:49 And naturally, with the coverage around Burrow this offseason, I thought it was nice that he was asked, was there a mandate to the front office? Like, hey, you guys better get this done, man, I tell you what, outside of what we heard from him in press conferences, right? Like, this is a paramount importance offseason for them, that the free agency is going to be crucial for this team. And we didn't really hear a whole lot from Joe after that. There was no radio row.
Starting point is 00:18:17 out of appearances for him this year, like last year. There wasn't any talk show circuit where he was out there essentially very publicly talking about T. Higgins and Jamar Chase and those extensions, T. Hendrickson, Mike Keseki and those things. But Burrow was still involved. He said to a lesser degree than past years, which I found interesting. But let's discuss how he approached this offseason in terms of the front office, in terms of what he talked about as he's aging
Starting point is 00:18:46 and doing some more things outside of football, at least that we're noticing. He pointed out, maybe it's a little bit more visible now than it used to be because he doesn't feel like he's done more non-football activities this year than other years. But talk a little bit about those couple of aspects of what Joe Burrow had to say on Wednesday to finish the show next.
Starting point is 00:19:06 Today's show is brought to by Fandle. The NBA playoffs are in full swing and whether you think the alien, Victor Wembenyama, and the San Antonio Spurs are going to cruise past the Thunder or maybe you think SGA and the back-to-back MVP is going to cruise to
Starting point is 00:19:23 title number two. Fandle's the place to go. And oh, my good, did you see what happened? Jake, did you see what happened Tuesday night in the NBA by chance? I vaguely saw a little bit of the Cavaliers come back. No, nope.
Starting point is 00:19:40 The Knicks come back on the Caval. Yeah, I don't know what's going on. The reason I ask is because it was the biggest meltdown ever. And I would have lost, like, all of the money because the calves were up 22 with 750 left. And they lose the game in overtime to the Knicks. And that's the fun of Fandle. 11, 11. Holy. Their win probability was 99.9%, Jake. And they blew it. And they're done that. That's, have you? I, like, it was worse than 28 to 3. It was worse than, it was worse than, uh, yeah, 28 to than the Pacers last year when they made a crazy comeback against the Knicks.
Starting point is 00:20:20 The point is, anything can happen in these playoffs. I'm convinced of it wild, wild times. And Fandall is going to make, well, that much more fun. And right now, new customers can bet $5 and get $150 in bonus bets if your first bet wins. Turn $5 into $150 in bonus bets just for getting started. All you have to do said to fandle.com, that's fandle.com. Fandle, play your game. James, what did you make of Joe Burrough saying that, you know, he didn't get his postseason meeting in
Starting point is 00:20:50 with the front office, didn't work out for timing. He was in contact with the front office throughout the free agency process, but he said he was actually less involved this year than previous years. When you heard him talking about his approach to the Bengals free agency side of things this off season, what were your thoughts? I, so it could go twofold, right? It doesn't work out schedule-wise, but sometimes saying nothing is better than saying something. And I really do wonder.
Starting point is 00:21:18 Yeah, it's a little weird. I do wonder, and look, we aren't alone here, so I'm not trying to pat ourselves on the back. So I prefaced it with that. But a lot of what Joe Burrow has said, or we think he has said or thought, really aligns with a lot of our thoughts from a, oh, man, they should add this guy or they should be aggressive, or they should do this, or they should put their chips in. And they, so from that side and the other side, and I think we are right about this, where Joe's like, what the hell are we doing? And my fear is when he does his, I'm Joe Burrow the star, or if he goes and gets a coffee in Cincinnati, everyone's thinking the same thing like, man, why don't the Bengals treat you better? Why aren't they putting you in a position to win? Why aren't they?
Starting point is 00:22:10 and now he can't he doesn't have that because they went out there and they did that and he feels that and so I do wonder if he's like I'm not going to meet with these guys like they need to figure it out and they know what I want and I wonder if part of why they make the Dexter Lawrence trade and why they were I think aggressive behind the scenes and kind of not shopping the 10th pick but I think they were willing to move pick number 10, which is just unprecedented for the Bengals, period. It would have been surprising if they move 41 in January. Hey, they're going to trade their second round pick for a starter.
Starting point is 00:22:49 We'd be like, come on. It's just not something they normally do. Maybe why they were open to that is because just like us, Joe in the organization, and maybe they felt Joe, like, we've done some good things, but that's not enough. we're not going to be enough. And it really feels like that that Dexter Lawrence move really put it over the top, change things, change the vibe, change the energy, all of those things.
Starting point is 00:23:14 And so what do I make of it? I make that there was real pressure. And if you're getting the silent treatment, those of you with significant others, you get that silent treatment. That's probably way worse than a knockdown, drag out argument. It is not fun. And when it's the franchise and the most important person in the building giving you that silent treatment,
Starting point is 00:23:34 and I'm not saying he did that. He said they were good communication and on the phone. But if you can feel that there's something there, boy, oh, boy, do you want to get that smoothed out? So I think they did. They had to feel the pressure. They had to feel the pressure, right? Like we felt it. So they had to feel.
Starting point is 00:23:51 Yeah. I mean, there was a reason that the discussion was what it was around Burrow, the soft season. The quote from Burrow was, I would say we had a lot of communication during free agency. We didn't have our postseason meeting like we typically have. I would say, if anything, I was less involved than in past. years. There's no secret that the last several years didn't go the way we wanted. There's a lot of blame to go around for that, myself included, said Burrow. And so we're in a great spot this year. We brought in great people, great players. You can feel the vibes as the locker room. The energy is
Starting point is 00:24:16 elevated right now. We have some veteran guys that can come in and show the younger guys on defense what it takes, what it means to be great every day. And that's exciting to be a part of. That's after or in the same press conference that he said, we went out and aggressively made it happen when he said, I think we know where we needed to be better. So this one, potentially missing this postseason meeting, which he said is just kind of how it happened for timing issues. And he can speculate about that. He's been busy. Like he does a lot of things. Yeah, yeah. But he did say, as you mentioned, that there was communication throughout the process.
Starting point is 00:24:51 And he also said there was less than normal. So I do wonder how behind the scenes this looked for Burrough. He obviously was very excited when they traded for Dexter Lawrence. He was asked about that and his reaction to that trade today. It talked about how hard it is to find that kind of player with the 10th overall pick and that they go out and they get this player that he thinks is the best defensive tackle in the game, right? And so there's a lot of excitement there. That Lawrence trade, though, is one that we're going to look back on as such a pivotal
Starting point is 00:25:21 point in the Joe Burrow era. It either works out. And Lawrence is the guy that we were expecting him to be this year. And this defense is built around Lawrence and his impact and his gravity. We talk about gravity on offense with Jamar Chase. We're going to be talking about gravity on defense this year with Dexter Lawrence and his presence on that defensive line. Or if it crashes and burns, that's the other way that we're going to look back on this, right? Like either way, no matter which way it goes, that trade is such a pivotal moment that I think we're going to be looking back on as we think about this era of Bengals football.
Starting point is 00:25:59 Joe Burrow turning 30 talking about not being sure if he's aging or if that's just general soreness as he as he talked about approaching 30 and I think he's got a few years before the aging stuff starts to set in as speaking from experience. I'm 34 Joe and I don't feel nothing. So good to go, brother. And you're in better shape than me. So that's it. In all seriousness, like kidless, that's the thing that really gives you is if you're losing
Starting point is 00:26:29 sleep and doing all those things you got he's good man 29 into 30 fine plenty of time uh from that perspective i uh it's um it is interesting to hear him bring up the age though and but he's also talking about wanting to play for a long time and that's part of his work life balance in the off season and all these things so i mean i don't mean retire i know i know you feel it when you turn 30 like everybody who's turned 30 knows what it's like to turn 30 well especially if he's dating and then he's alleged i don't give a damn who he dates but like someone who's much not not 30 and closer into the 25 range right like that that's going to matter too because guess what all of her friends are probably going to mention how you're about to be 30 and so that's going to get brought up like that's
Starting point is 00:27:19 just it right like i if you work with people that are younger than you or whatever then that's that's part of it. So it, I mean, he's been in the league a while now. And this is the time going back to the record part of it where, because we talked about T. Higgins yesterday and like expectations. And I said double digit touchdowns and 1,200 yards. They should be in their prime right now. And so I'm hoping, really hoping that that's the case because it, if it is,
Starting point is 00:27:54 we could see 50 touchdowns. And I can't say should see because should is a lot. Like that's a lot. But if you just say, oh, well, Joe can average four touchdowns per game, which it's less than that, three plus touchdowns per game. Jamar has double-digit touchdowns.
Starting point is 00:28:12 Tia's double-digit touchdowns. Really easy to see the path to that coming to fruition if this offense is as good as a lot of people think it could be. It's tough. though. Like, there's something hard about their schedule this year is that they play Houston and Pittsburgh twice and Baltimore twice, depending on what their defense looks like in the new era there and they play Cleveland twice. So the entire division throws hard defenses at you. They get Houston on top of that. So there's some pretty difficult defensive matchups, not to mention,
Starting point is 00:28:43 I'm sure one of these teams is going to pop up and have it better than expected defense for the games that I haven't mentioned. Like maybe Indianapolis figures some things out late down the year and Lou Aniromo comes up with one of his quarterback kryptonite game plans and they make it hard on Joe in that game too. Like, it's a tough year to be talking about 50 touchdowns, something that Joe Burrow has never done in a regular season. But I like that that's where his mindset is. And I like that he's thinking about in the offseason how to make sure that he's balancing things in such a way that is sustainable. Right. We saw him hit an emotional psychological low last year where the losing was taking a toll.
Starting point is 00:29:27 And so it is important to find multiple ways in life just true for everybody, right? Multiple avenues toward happiness and fulfillment in life. So I think it's a sign of maturity for any human being. Joe Burrow, you listening, your friend down the street, whoever it is, to have multiple ways of finding fulfillment in life and decentering when there's one specific thing that you're so reliant on and such a big part of your identity. Obviously, football is going to be that for Joe Burrow, 95% of the time. But having something else to rock with, I think, is a pretty important piece as well. Next time on lockdown Bengals, we will discuss what it is that Joe Burrow is calling the most talented
Starting point is 00:30:16 roster in his time in Cincinnati. Is that true? Is this Bengals team in fact the most talented we've seen? We'll get into that next time on Lockdown Bengals. Until then, thanks for listening. Hoodey and have a good.
