Starting point is 00:00:00 The Cincinnati Bengals have a three-day weekend, but McKinley Jackson has hit the IR. Let's discuss the state of the Bengals defensive line room. You are Locked-on Bengals, your daily Cincinnati Bengals podcast. Part of the Locked-On Podcast Network, your team every day. What are Bengals fans and welcome to another episode of the Locked-on Bengals podcast. I'm your host, Jake Liscoe. He's your host, James Rapine. We're part of the Locked-on podcast.
Starting point is 00:00:36 we're covering your team every day on YouTube and everywhere you get your podcast. Welcome back to the everydayers. Shout out to all of you who make us your first listen. And welcome to everyone who is new to this show. If you're new and you're looking for frequent daily updates on your Cincinnati Bengals, while you're in the right place, you can hit the subscribe button. Today we're going to reflect on the Bengals defensive line room that has been hampered by injuries, several guys on the injured reserve on that defensive line.
Starting point is 00:01:06 And we still have to talk about Jamar Chase Watch. We're as sick of it as you are, I promise, but we can't not talk about it. We will get there a little bit later in the episode, in addition to reviewing the Bengals' final additions to the practice squad, including some guys you heard about yesterday on this show, if you were paying attention late in the show. James, we start with the official move for McKinley Jackson to the injured reserve. Yeah, it's unfortunate, and it's a possibility we've discussed.
Starting point is 00:01:35 and I was hoping it didn't come to this and unfortunately it did and so McKinley Jackson's going to miss at least the first four weeks of the season he did get some work in on the rehab field on Thursday but the rookie nose tackle big brace on his right knee still
Starting point is 00:01:53 and I think this is about one roster space of course but two playing it safe much like Miles Murphy I think they're in a different way of course but still banking on McKinley Jackson to make an impact this year. And it just stinks, Jake, because think about it. Like, we're talking about a guy
Starting point is 00:02:10 who as early as week five could be in NFL games, and he didn't play a preseason snap. He didn't get all those joint practice reps that you would hope a rookie would be able to get. Think about the evolution that Chris Jenkins that we've seen from him over the past few weeks.
Starting point is 00:02:27 And McKinley Jackson gets none of that development, none of that growth because of this knee injury, and now he's going to miss the first four weeks of the year. I was pretty bummed. I knew was a possibility, but it kind of sucks that it's a reality now. And if they need a nose tackle early in the season, that might just be JTFellé, that might be practice squad callups for the guys. They added to the practice squad in Justin Rogers or even Dominique Davis,
Starting point is 00:02:50 who the Bengals had to keep on the practice squad after he was not really very active in the preseason recovering from injuries throughout. But those are two nose tackle bodies they've got on the practice squad if they need them. But it is a bummer for McKinley Jackson, a guy that was going to be asked. to fill very big shoes in DJ Reader's role as the only nose tackle at the time that we thought was going to make the team. Of course, he did make the team. Just ended up going to IR after Zach Taylor said that he had a slightly more optimistic recovery timeline compared to Miles Murphy, who's also on IR, of course, or Brad Robbins. But unfortunately, the optimistic timeline was not
Starting point is 00:03:29 fast enough, I think, to be comfortable with it. And in addition to playing it, say, if you've got a rookie who, to your point, did not make it into preseason games, did not make it to joint practices. So if instead you can have an opportunity to call up guys if you need to from your practice squad who did play through the preseason, once they're comfortable with your playbook in the case of Justin Rogers, who at this point is catching up as quickly as he can, well, then maybe that makes a little bit more sense than trying to rush a rookie back who missed a bunch of time. Yeah, he would know your playbook, but you didn't get all those reps and maybe needs time to get back into shape and get caught up on everything going on,
Starting point is 00:04:07 whereas instead you could have guys that are at least practicing with you if you choose to use a game day activation on that body type because you need a nose tackle this week. Yep, yep. It did make me think of, and now that we know that McKinley Jackson is out for four weeks, and we don't know, but our good buddy DJ reader was activated by the Lions off the Pupp list. And I don't know if he's going to play week one.
Starting point is 00:04:33 And heck, he may miss three weeks. I don't know when he'll be back coming off of that quad tendon, serious quad tendon tear. But how different would we feel if Reader was signed? Let's say he takes the Bengals deal or the Bengals go up and give him what he got in Detroit, which is essentially a one-year deal, even though it's two, unless he's awesome this year. He's probably not going to see that second year.
Starting point is 00:04:58 How much different would you feel about this defensive line? because I think on paper a DJ Reader, Sheldon Rankins, certainly you have, whom I miss, I'll BJ Hill, and then you have Chris Jenkins as your four. And then if you still drafted McKinley Jackson, now we're talking about your five and you're not banking on him early. And it's just, it feels a little different, Jake. It's still a situation where you might need one of Rogers or Dominic Davis or J2 fell like week one.
Starting point is 00:05:25 It sounds like the timeline for Reader in Detroit, according to Dan Campbell, is they're shooting for week two. that they're not expecting to have him back for week one, but regardless, getting DJ Reader back for week two, if he's DJ Reader, the way that we think he will continue to be DJ Reader, he's recovered from this injury before. Well, that would certainly be a shot in the arm for the defensive line.
Starting point is 00:05:45 And it's a little frustrating in retrospect. They could have done both moves. They could have kept DJ. They could have added Sheldon Rankins in addition to keeping DJ Reader. They could have additionally drafted Chris Jenkins and they could have additionally drafted McKinley Jackson or waited until later in the draft to even draft Justin Rogers themselves if they were so inclined. That was an option that they could have taken in the seventh round.
Starting point is 00:06:09 If they wanted to use that third round pick in another way, if DJ Reader was so on the roster. So certainly a butterfly effect there that we observed throughout the offseason. And you mentioned before the show, the irony, I guess, of DJ Reader coming off the Pupp list where your rookie that you've drafted in Cincinnati to replace that role, even if that isn't, even necessarily McKinley Jackson's strength being a two-gapping nose tackle. That's not what he did well in college, even though he has that body type. There's probably an acclimation period required there. The irony that he needed to go to IR while DJ Reader is getting ready for week two
Starting point is 00:06:45 is something that now exists in the universe. And the argument, and this is how we can tie this into what's next, back in March, is probably, you know, Jamar Chase is eligible for a contract extension, Jake. And I know you're in love with the idea of talking about Jamar Chase's contract and what could potentially happen with Jamar Chase's contract. Did he practice on Thursday? And is it time to start wondering if he's actually going to be on the field for week one if your head coach, Zach Taylor? We'll discuss that coming up next. Today's show is brought to you by five-hour energy, Five-hour energy fixes tired fast.

Again, use Locked-onFB at five-hour energy.com. In the locker room after practice on Thursday, Mike Hilton was talking with the media and said that we kind of expect him to be out there week one, referring to Jamar Chase, but who knows?
Starting point is 00:08:53 and that seems to be a vibe. The player is still with Jermar Chase and Mike Hilton still seems to think, we kind of expect that this will work itself out and he'll be out there week one, but also careful to say, but who knows, we don't know exactly how this is going to go.
Starting point is 00:09:08 Something that perhaps is now more in the forefront of the minds of the Cincinnati Bengals coaching staff after Zach Taylor for the second consecutive day talking with media had to say, I'm not going to make any predictions about Jermark Chases, practice participation. It might look a lot like yesterday, referring to when Jamar Chase entered the indoor facility in street close, about 12 minutes, 13 minutes into practice. And it was pretty similar to yesterday, James. Jamar Chase arriving some amount of minutes between 10 and 20 after practice
Starting point is 00:09:40 started in street clubs. Yeah, I'll actually check the timestamp of my social media post. 151. Practice started at 130. So 21 minutes. Take the minute that I used. to probably post it with a watermark. And so it's probably 20 minutes, I would say, that he did. And certainly strutted, I will say. He had the Jamar strut. I was the first camera on him, like physically. A lot of them were zoomed in, not looking at the cameras at all, walking past,
Starting point is 00:10:10 and shades on. Look, it is officially time if you're Zach Taylor, I think. And you have this three-day weekend. You're back Monday. And I'm sure they've discussed it some, but now you need to really make sure that you're prepared to not have Jamar. Hopefully you do. Hopefully something gets done. But the more I think about it, and obviously we talked about it yesterday, but Zach Taylor put his foot in his mouth.
Starting point is 00:10:39 Why? Because Jamar changed his mind or did a 180 or didn't like the dialogue that was being had. from a contract standpoint, like something changed. And so he's back to holding in. And so who's to say that Jemar Chase couldn't show up for practice on Wednesday, show up for practice on Thursday next week, and then say, you know what, I don't like how this is turned. I'm not going to play against the Patriots.
Starting point is 00:11:09 Like have the plan now. You have the three extra days. And I know it's, you could just say, oh, well, they have depth at receiver. They'll be ready. That's fine. But the game plan is much, much different as you know, Jake. if Jamar Chase is out there versus Jamar Chase not being out there. And so if I'm Zach Taylor, if I'm Dan pitcher, that process is already being put into place now.
Starting point is 00:11:33 I think there is some fortuitousness that the Patriots are the week one opponent. And we'll get more into this matchup next week. We will have all of our game preview and crossover show and all these things that you're used to on lockdown Bengals in the regular season. next week leading up to week one. But the Patriots do have a solid secondary. Christian Gonzalez, obviously, the headliner there, Marcus Jones, Jonathan Jones, the other corners, Jabroo Peppers, Kyle Dugger, the safeties,
Starting point is 00:12:04 and Peppers really resolved his career, revived his career, found a path forward outside of Cleveland and has been a pretty solid player. So the secondary is not the weakness of that team. So you would rather have Jamar Chase to take advantage of that. I mean, there's no game in which you would not rather have Jamar Chase. But then you got the chiefs in week, too. So if Jamar really wants to amp up the pressure on this front office and start to really play hardball and say,
Starting point is 00:12:37 you know what, I'll eat the financial penalties, which are outlined very well. I know you've got to post on your website about it, James. There also is an article by Joel Corey, who's a former agent who has written a about financial matters and NFLPA matters and great detail before if you're interested in reading the nitty gritty. Jamar Chase stands to lose millions of dollars if he holds out into the season, up to millions of dollars, I should say. So there's reason for Jamar to play, but also if he just wants to go get paid and Chad Johnson
Starting point is 00:13:12 certainly thinks that the guy wants to get paid before he plays in a game, go check out his timeline on Twitter for what I'm talking about there, the pressure could be amplified if Jamar makes this something that he's going to take a hard line on. It is weird, though. I still can't really totally grasp the return to practice to then return to holding it. It could just be that, like you said, something changed. The CD Lamb deal got done. Something changed in the conversation. He didn't really like the direction. Things were going. It was a good faith measure like Adam Schaefter said, And it was like, okay, I'll practice a couple of days. But let's get this thing done.
Starting point is 00:13:50 And then it didn't get moving the way he wanted it to get moving. And so he returned to the old tactic. But anything we're saying about this, as it has been for much of the week, besides when Zach Taylor prematurely put this thing to bed, is speculative. We don't really know what's going on behind the scenes. No, not until he talks. Right. And I think he's not talking honestly by design because,
Starting point is 00:14:16 the old saying, if you can't say anything nice, don't say anything at all. I think being loud about it, and you can be loud without speaking, and I think the past two days have been exactly that. The question here is, does the front office even feel the past two days? Do they care that Zach had to put his foot in his mouth? Do they, does it move the needle for them that this could be a distraction? And by the way, if he misses week one, if it goes into Wednesday and Joe Burrow is answering questions about Jamar Chase after practice because Jamar didn't practice, I'll tell you right now, that's a distraction. I promise you, as good as this locker room is at handling this stuff, officially a distraction, then.
Starting point is 00:15:04 You just can't dodge it. You're talking about week one, just a few days before you play the Patriots. I talked to you about this. I thought the Joe Burrough stuff last year was a distraction. he signs it the day before they play Cleveland. They agree to it less than 72 hours before they play Cleveland. It was like 66 hours before the season opener. Like that's tough to do and to work that out and to go through all the emotion that comes with signing that type of deal for the entire team because they know what Joe means.
Starting point is 00:15:35 And the entire team also knows what Jamar means. So there are layers to it. And in my question, outside of wanting to know numbers, would literally be, all right, is Jamar doing this? Does it move the needle at all for you, Mike, Katie, Troy? People named Duke. Duke doesn't really handle the contract talks at all. So that would be the three people that I would want to ask that to. And I don't know the answer.
Starting point is 00:16:04 I don't know it either. Maybe it's just Jamar Chase really doesn't like the chiefs. And he saw the Joe Burrow news come out shortly into that chief season opener last year. He's like, yeah, I like that. Let's see that again. I don't think that's it. But it's fun to think of because, I mean, he is petty about the Chiefs now. He would not say Patrick Mahoney's name.
Starting point is 00:16:28 That is the thing that exists in Jamar Chase. I don't think that's what's happening here. But that would be next level pettiness. That would be very funny. It would be wild if that happens again. I literally said months ago, I think, on this pot. Like, I don't want it to go down to the wire. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:16:46 I don't want it to happen, Jake. And well, history could repeat itself. I think that would be an ideal scenario, though, if they can get something done. If Joe is the franchise, then Jamar is the next in line. I don't even want to, it's not the heir to the throne, but he's right there next to the franchise for sure. Sure. Those are the two guys you build around. We can lean into Game of Thrones. He could be the hand of the king.
Starting point is 00:17:14 But I think he's even more like. I mean, the hand of the king at times in the Game of Thorn universe, we're not going to go too far down this rabbit hole. It's essentially the king. Yeah. So there's that. He certainly is strutting like the king right now. I'll tell you.
Starting point is 00:17:33 He's not doing setups in the driveway, but he's certainly walking around. The other thing about this, I think is unfortunate that we've observed over the last week is it's really everyone is exhausted of this at this point. We are. We said that we were at the beginning of the show. A lot of you probably skipped to the last segment because you're sick of hearing about this. I think it's tiresome for fans. I know that it's not a comfortable place like you said. I think yesterday rocking a hard place for Zach Taylor. It's not a comfortable place for him to occupy because
Starting point is 00:18:09 There's no GM, like John Lynch went and talked to 49ers media yesterday about Brandon Ayuk. That's not happening in Cincinnati. So you got fans feeling uncomfortable about it, arguing about it on the internet. You got your head coach in a bad situation. And your players are having to answer questions about it. Yesterday was Ted Karris. Today it's Mike Hilton. Whether or not that's a significant distraction, a material distraction, we'll see.
Starting point is 00:18:35 Maybe this doesn't end up mattering. But everyone is having to answer questions. about it from your head coach to your players and fans are dealing with it and bickering about it. It's not a great situation for anybody. And whatever side you're on, I think you can agree that it would be better than not to get this thing resolved and just get to the football. I think that's where we all want to get. Yep. To the football.
Starting point is 00:19:00 Speaking of football, the Bengals made some football moves. They finalized their 16-man practice squad with four new faces that weren't on. on the roster during training camp. We will tell you who those guys are coming up next. Passion drive and patience. The formula for winning championships is also what keeps your ride or die alive. eBay Motors has everything you need to maintain your vehicle and level it up to peak performance.

Starting point is 00:19:55 Keep your ride or die alive at eBay motors.com. Eligible items only exclusions apply. eBay guaranteed fit only available to U.S. customers. The Bengals did indeed finalize their initial preference. practice squad, the initial 16 guys that will be on that list. We mentioned Justin Rogers yesterday. We also mentioned Kendall Milton and Isaiah Thomas yesterday. Those guys signed to the practice squad on Thursday.
Starting point is 00:20:23 And the final piece, a guard from Baltimore to Sean Manning. That is the new guy for the Bengals, who is an interior offensive lineman wearing number 66, as Nate Gilliam did not land with the Cincinnati Bengals on the practice school. Yeah, I'm surprised surprised surprised that it's Manning instead of Gilliam do we see the Gilliam go anywhere else did did you happen to see? Not that I've seen by the way Jackson Carmen just got called for holding while we were talking Nate Gilliam. I do not see Nate Gilliam anywhere holding 79. He's not even on a roster right now. I can't believe Jackson Carmen keeps getting called for penalties but no, I do not see Nate Gilliam. All right, Jackson, stop holding.
Starting point is 00:21:09 All right. No, I don't as of now. So I haven't seen anything, which is interesting. I wonder if he's, I hope he's not like hurt or anything. Yeah, me too, obviously. Never want guys to be injured. I would say that it's maybe a mild surprise. He was one of the guys when we talked about the wave players
Starting point is 00:21:28 that I thought they would want to bring back. DeShon Manning has been in the league for a couple of years, though, guard from Kentucky, has played well in the preseason a couple of times and never really made it into preseason action for the Ravens. The Ravens have their own issues on the offensive lines. So this isn't necessarily something that we should be raving about. It's not like the Ravens had 11 starter level offensive linemen, which would be a pipe dream for any NFL team, and Manning was just an odd man out. But I do think that some of the people that cover the Ravens, the route for the Ravens were not happy to see Tashon Manning go.
Starting point is 00:22:02 Some people had him as a dark horse to make that roster as a backup offensive linemen. And I think there was an expectation that he would be back on the Ravens practice squad, but perhaps he sees a more direct path to playing time or potentially getting onto a 53-man roster with the Bengals where, yeah, there's Cody Ford, yeah, there's Jackson Kirkland, who's back to working a guard from what I can tell in the limited practice footage and practice observations that are available to us now that there are a regular season practice schedule. But adding some interior line depth did make sense
Starting point is 00:22:35 where yes, they have Trey Hill as well, but if they think there's some upside with the 6-3-340 to Sean Manning, take a guy from your division rival, why not? Sure. And I'll trust them here because they've clearly been willing to turn over a new loop.
Starting point is 00:22:56 leaf like when it comes to the offensive line. Think about the guys we're talking about here. Jackson Kirkland, Matt Lee. Cody Ford is still new, relatively speaking, when we're talking about just got called for holding again. Jackson, Carmen, Trey Hill, who I think he's still obviously in the organization on the practice squad. I think they like him.
Starting point is 00:23:15 But last year they clung to him when they probably shouldn't have and kept 10 offensive linemen. This year they were willing, all right, we'll expose you. Let's see if someone clanged you, if not, we'll keep you around because we like your attitude. and all of those things. So, yeah, I, I'm fine with them taking a flyer elsewhere, even though I'm still surprised that Nate Gilliam.
Starting point is 00:23:34 One, isn't on the practice squad, but two, just isn't in the league right now. That's surprising. Also, Alan George, not in the league right now. I thought he had a good preseason. I haven't seen him sign with a practice squad anywhere. Also, just a bit surprising. That's all.
Starting point is 00:23:49 Yeah, we'll see what happens there. There are teams that are probably still in the process of finalizing their last spots for their extra. external players, especially on the West Coast. Maybe their physical is happening right now for some of the teams in the Pacific time zone as of the time of recording where in my time zone it is 1248 p.m. just afternoon. So it could certainly be some physicals at this point. But the Bengals did make a choice, to your point, James, to keep five tight ends and keep the extra
Starting point is 00:24:18 safety and keep Mumajong meta instead of keeping the 10th offensive linemen. But I honestly like the external moves they've made on the practice squad quite a bit. The only spot where I'm a little bit skeptical of the practice squad at this point is at corner, but they have Jalen Davis there. And Jalen Davis is a fantastic piece to have on your practice squad. So that mitigates it, but he's more, as we know, a slot guy in Nickel Corner. The safety and outside corner, PJ Jules and Nate Brooks, I thought Jules actually had a pretty good preseason,
Starting point is 00:24:51 but they could do a little bit better there. That's fine, though. I mean, we're really nitpicking at that point, but really like the additions of Justin Rogers, Kendall, Milton, Isaiah, Thomas, and Tashon Manning for the external guys. A lot of the guys they kept are guys that we thought they would try to keep because they had strong preseasonesons in one way, shape, or form as potential practice squad candidate.
Starting point is 00:25:13 So by and large, pretty happy with the moves they've made over the last 48 hours. Yeah, for sure. And a guy like Kendall Milton, and you could throw Justin Rogers, like even Isaiah Thomas in here, probably. But Kendall Milton could see snaps this year. Like, it would not shock me if you told me that right now. You look at their running back depth or lack thereof. I mean, they have, obviously they brought back Trayvion Williams, so you have three on the roster and you have one on the practice squad. Like, that's your fourth guy.
Starting point is 00:25:47 Is he a call up week three if you need him? Yeah, probably, you know, like we could see him early if there's an injury. And so I do think that that's a spot that I would still look at and continue to look at for the Bengals just throughout the year. Because it's still pretty thin. I mean, he's your fourth guy and you only have four guys, like one injury and you have to add someone. And we're used to them at least having guys that they're comfortable with familiar faces. And this year, it's, it's just a bit different in that running back room. And who knows, maybe it'll work out.
Starting point is 00:26:24 I will say Kendall Milton, you nailed it yesterday. And he's a big back. He gives them a dynamic that they don't have in that backfield. And so that's also, I'm like, man, he could be active in the near future. Like, is there a chance that he gets comfortable and shows some special teams forte and maybe, you know, makes a push here or there? I wouldn't shock me. I think it's a chance to get there because he is a unique player
Starting point is 00:26:51 as far as that Bengals backfield goes with the size that he possesses. For his size, he's a decent athlete. His 10-yard split was pretty good for a larger running back at the combine. His jumps were pretty impressive for a larger back at the combine
Starting point is 00:27:07 and obviously he has the Georgia pedigree. So if he can learn the offense to be in the right place at the right time, you could see it. I mean, I was looking, I can't remember exactly when it was, but you knew that I had talked about Kendall Milton in the pre-draft process, a guy that the Bengals had some contact with. And all of these guys, by the way, were guys the Bengals had pre-draft contact with.
Starting point is 00:27:28 I'm not sure about Chisham Wharton, now that I think of it, I didn't double-check that one, but the three other guys, Rogers, Thomas, and Milton, all guys they had pre-draft contact with. At some point, I was looking at him as a guy that I thought the Bengals might target on day three. And instead he ends up on the team as a practice squad acquisition. But to provide that kind of skill set he had, and he was pretty good as a pass blocker for Georgia as he took on that role a lot more this year than he had in the past, he kind of made sense as a different kind of back the Bengals might be interested in
Starting point is 00:28:03 if they wanted that bigger-bodied bell cow traditional style of back. Not that Kendall Milton is going to be a bell cow for the Bengals, but just from a physicality perspective, he has that tool set. I thought he could make sense. And there he is with the Bengals in a room that is, as you said, James, Chalo, even when you consider the practice squad, just four total running backs practicing with the Bengals right now, certainly an opportunity there for Milton could present itself.
Starting point is 00:28:29 Yeah, it could. And hopefully he can develop. I asked Zach how they're going to treat these guys because there are new faces. And you have today and then you have three more practices and a couple walkthroughs before week one. And yeah, they're practice squad players. still want to get them up and running and moving, especially in a running back room that only has three guys ahead of Milton.
Starting point is 00:28:51 And it's going to be a crash course, I think, when it comes to the playbook over the next few days and then get them in a position to compete, is what Zach said. So hopefully they can do that soon, all of these guys, because I think at least three of the four could realistically be called upon earlier rather than later due to depth questions or just potential injuries that we could see that are inevitable in football.
Starting point is 00:29:18 This is also probably the most we'll talk about any of these guys for the whole season. The way the practice squad tends to go is that it gets a lot of focus up front. And then unless those guys are needed or unless there is a breakout, we don't tend to talk about those guys much more over the course of the season. So I'll take the over because I think that there will be a time when either Rogers or Milton becomes a pretty big time. But those are the two that I would wager on. Sure.
Starting point is 00:29:45 But even when there were practice squad, even when there are, I should say, practice squad call-ups, it's not like they are a huge focus unless they have to be. And we'll see. Maybe that happens this year because, as we've discussed, their situations where those guys could be relied upon for significant snaps. Yep. We'll see. Hopefully everyone just stays healthy.
Starting point is 00:30:06 Turn the injury slider all the way down like in Madden and everyone stays healthy and Jamar Chase's deal gets done. One day they will find that setting in the NFL. We can only hope. That's going to do it for this episode of the Lockdown Bengals podcast. You might have noticed the AFC North Season preview recently on your Locked-on Bengals feed.
