Locked On Bengals - Daily Podcast On The Cincinnati Bengals - OT CLAIM: Bengals Add Myles Hinton On Waivers To BOLSTER Tackle Depth, But Questions Remain

Episode Date: August 31, 2026

The Cincinnati Bengals were still in the market to improve their offensive tackle depth after the initial cut to 53, and claimed Myles Hinton, who fits the "developmental tackle" role more than it loo...ks like he'll be a swing tackle. The former Philadelphia Eagles 6th round pick displaced Tight End Tanner Hudson, but the question remains whether the Bengals will add a veteran OT3. Jake Liscow and Joe Goodberry discuss the Hinton addition, and dig into the Bengals' practice squad after the Bengals had none of their cut players claimed by other teams, but saw Mitch Tinsley and Cam Grandy sign to other practice squads. Key pieces like Shaka Heyward and Bralyn Lux will provide quality depth, but the guys wonder whether other offensive linemen are on their way to the practice squad.  Photo Credits: Tork Mason Bill Streicher  Everydayer Club The improved Everydayer Club brings you access to ad-free audio, the Subtext insider club where you can text Jake and Joe and get Bengals updates in your text messages, and Joe Goodberry's members-only Discord with over 1000 other Bengals fans—all built for our most loyal fans. Starting point is 00:00:00 The Cincinnati Bengals improved their tackle depth with a waiver claim on Monday, but we're still not sure that third offensive tackle spot, that all important swing tackle is really solved. You are locked on Bengals, your daily Cincinnati Bengals podcast, part of the Locked on Podcast network, your team every day. What up Bengals fans and welcome to another episode of the Locked on Bengals podcast. The day after cutdowns, we talk preck, squad and waiver claims.
Starting point is 00:00:37 And Joe Goodberry, myself, Jake Lisco, will get into all of that in this episode of Lockdown Bengals, plus the very few notes that we have from Cincinnati Bengals social media about what's going on with the Bengals practice. So there are no longer open to the media. We're now in the regular season portion
Starting point is 00:00:54 where media locally are only allowed for the first 30 minutes, which is your warm-up, your stretch, your indie, and then they're out of there. So a lot less details coming out of practice, but we do have some notes. get to a little bit later in the show in addition to the bengals that have gone elsewhere and what the beginnings of the bengals practice squad are looking like because as of the time of recording at 7 p.m. Eastern time, we don't have the full bengals practice squad quite yet, but we can start Joe
Starting point is 00:01:21 with the offensive tackle the bengals added. Their one waiver claim they were awarded. There were a whole bunch of tackles claimed and the bengals added to their room. We'll get to that in an episode brought to you by Fandle. College football Saturdays are already packed. with reasons to get excited in this season. Fandul's giving fans even more ways to get in on every matchup. You can join all the action at Fandul.com. And Joe, the Bengals, had a legacy player,
Starting point is 00:01:46 a second generation, at least NFL player to their offensive tackle room. Yeah, and Miles Hint, I'm sorry, I thought you're still going there. Jake, you got me off guard there. I yapped enough.
Starting point is 00:01:58 Your turn. It's my turn, yes. They made a claim for Miles Hinton at offensive tackle and were awarded him. We don't always get information on if they've claimed other players. So, you know, but we know for sure they wanted an offensive tackle. We talked about this after the cut down.
Starting point is 00:02:15 We've been alluding to it and pretty much forecasting it since what? I mean, one of the preseason and then the Cody Ford cut happened. And it's questions we keep getting is the offensive tackle number three on this roster? Is it Jalen Rivers? Is it Javon Foster? Who's it going to be? It looks like it may. maybe Miles Hinton, at the very least, they want to get him in the building here and see what he can do.
Starting point is 00:02:41 This is a guy that was a former five-star recruit, started at Stanford, went to Michigan. I mean, he's six foot seven listed at times three 45, 323. I think it was at the Combiner Pro Day when he was coming out, 34 and some change arms. He moves really, really well for a big guy, especially if at times he was 345 and then he's moving really well. There's some poles and some second level blocks where you can see that athleticism from Hinton. And the Bengals like their big offensive tackles. So they put in a claim. I think some of the Eagles offensive line reputation is playing along here as teams were interested in their backup offensive linemen.
Starting point is 00:03:22 And you got to say that at this point, I don't know that this means the position is answered or solved. It's just buying another lottery ticket in the hopes that you can develop one of these young guys to, be that offensive tackle number three. A bit of a lottery ticket, but when you've watched the tape, Joe, you talked about the tantalizing pools that he had in college, the pulling blocks and the athleticism that he showcased. I watched his snaps against the Bengals. It was a tryout for the Bengals, apparently in that final preseason game. And actually, both of the tackles will play the fourth quarter for the Eagles were claimed.
Starting point is 00:03:53 Eagles put another tackle on their practice squad. So incredibly deep at the position, apparently, unlike the rest of the NFL. But you can see the athleticism and the kickslide as well, the pass protection. posture looks incredible. And you compare that with Javon Foster, who did have a solid preseason. He played reasonably well when he was on the field. He got good results. But we talked about the upright posture and the way that he played looking a little bit clunky that didn't look exactly like a natural NFL tackle where you watched Hinton and it looks very different mechanically or aesthetically. Maybe it is only aesthetics. But you mentioned that he was a five star
Starting point is 00:04:27 recruit. And I didn't know that. I find that really interesting because my first impression when I watched the, I don't know, 15 or so snaps that I watched of him against the Bengals today. And I saw, you know, he was drafted in the sixth round. And you think about his path through Stanford and Michigan, if he was good, he would have been picked earlier. And if he had lived up to the tools as a five-star recruit, he would have certainly been picked earlier. So my impression was that this was a guy that had never quite lived up to the toolkit that he
Starting point is 00:04:53 has because you see that movement ability. You see the length that he can play with and maybe it's hands. To me, it looked like his hands weren't landing with a ton of power consistently. There wasn't a whole lot of seeing the defender jolt back when the punch went out from Hinton. And so that could be something that is a great fit. And where that lottery ticket kind of makes sense with the coaching style that we have with the Cincinnati Bengals and Scott Peters and the way that he approaches teaching, punching, and hand usage in particular, because the feet look good, quite frankly, to me.
Starting point is 00:05:25 And, you know, I watched 15 snaps against, you know, Isaiah Foskey and Powell Rylan for the Bengals Foske, by the way, on the practice squad, we'll give you those updates and talk a little bit more about what we know about the practice squad a few minutes. But you can see where the potential is. And so, like, I like that part of this move. He's a good piece to compete with Javan Foster for OT4,
Starting point is 00:05:47 but not necessarily for OT3 with two weeks to go into the preseason. Like, if this move happened even a month ago, And he has all of training camp to go prove himself. That's one thing. That's different. But I also said yesterday, Joe, I think I've never seen a player make a team off the fourth quarter of a preseason game. And that's exactly what Hinton just did. He didn't make the Eagles, but he played 15 or so snaps against the Bengals in the fourth quarter of the final preseason game.
Starting point is 00:06:10 And that is certainly part of why he gets the claim from the Bengals. Another interesting thing about this is we say at times that if you play well against the Bengals, they have more interest in you, right? So here's this final preseason game. He plays well in that one. He also played the Bengals in the preseason in 2025. If you remember the beginning, the week one of preseason was against the Eagles as well in Philadelphia. The Tanner McKee game.
Starting point is 00:06:37 Tanner McKee, he made a name for himself. But Hinton was charged with two sacks in that game. I went back and watched those as well. And one was a blitz that he just did not see coming. And there was, I read scouting reports from his draft profile that, said that he had some processing slowness and maybe didn't always see stunts and twists. Well, you had a blitz here where Barrett Carter kind of loops around. We have a slot blitz.
Starting point is 00:07:03 So the running back picks that up. The end goes inside. So Hinton kind of gives them off to the guard. And that just never sees Barrett Carter coming through that gap. And Carter launches himself in the air. And Leroy Jenkins it and gets the sack. And then the next one is a Taven Brian cam sample twist. Yes, it feels like that was five years ago.
Starting point is 00:07:22 It was not. that was last year. It's been a lot of turnover on this roster in the back half. But it's an end tackle twist stunt. And it just doesn't finish the play. He kind of just is okay holding on to Taven Brian. And it's a coverage sack as the quarterback steps up. And Dave and Brian just slides inside and finishes the playoff.
Starting point is 00:07:42 And you kind of see like, you know, you probably could have power stepped him and pushed him inside a little bit more. So as I watched more of the film after that, I also thought he had some passiveness in him a little bit. bit and then low awareness. So yeah, I think he needs reps. He needs to be coached up coming from the Eagles where that's what they were known for. If they don't have Jeff Stoutland anymore, hey, Scott Peters, what we saw some of these guys develop on this offensive line. That's a decent bet to take. But you're right. Does this mean he's offensive tackle number three? And do you
Starting point is 00:08:12 feel comfortable with this guy stepping in? And what if it has to step in at right tackle? Doesn't look like he has a lot of experience there at all. It just, you don't feel good about where they're at still at this position. You feel like you should still be scouring the free agent market looking for a veteran to feel a little bit better about that spot. Yeah, I don't know that the answer was ever going to come on a waiver claim, but the veterans that are still out there that the list hasn't changed as far as I know are still interesting. You mentioned Jeff Stoutland and you mentioned the awareness and that was something that I noticed as well. He was late to process a stunt this year against the Bengals too. It didn't lead to a sack, but a long developing stunt that is set up by
Starting point is 00:08:51 a spin move and he didn't really exactly figure out in real time what was going on. So a little bit late to pick up that stunt. So it could just be like you said, that need for refs to get the speed of the game down. But the quote from Jeff Stoutland on Miles Hinton last year was high praise. When you find tackles that are very athletic and smooth and they can slide their feet in protection, they're long. They're very valuable in this league. They're hard to find developing those two players for me, the legendary coach Jeff Stoutland,
Starting point is 00:09:16 is very exciting because they can become anybody they want. But to your point, Joe, doesn't answer the question about OT3. That being said, they did have to make a corresponding move to get Hinton onto the roster. We'll discuss what the Bengals did and where they might be going with that move, the shape of the practice squad so far, and the other bits and bobs that we have from a busy Monday coming up next. Today's episode of the Lockdown Bengals podcast is brought to you by Fandul, College football Saturdays are already packed with reasons to get excited. And this season, Fandul is giving you the opportunity to have even more ways to get in on every single
Starting point is 00:10:00 matchup. Back your favorite team, build a same game parlay, bet team props, or make your picks on the biggest game of the weekend. And throughout the season, keep an eye on the Fandual app for even more ways to get rewarded. With a full slate of college football every Saturday, there are plenty of opportunities to follow the games and find new ways to get involved. And that's to me the best part. Because I don't have a favorite college football team.
Starting point is 00:10:25 I like the entire slate on Saturday at noon and just seeing what's coming, who's playing, the big rivalries. Maybe I can pick a certain player or a matchup that sounds, you know, interesting and fun to keep an eye on. And that keeps me into college football. And you can do that by visiting fanduil.com to get started today. Jake, they had to have a corresponding move. You make a claim.
Starting point is 00:10:49 something has to happen. And we had to wait like three hours to get this. You know, the, the waiver wire process is at one o'clock. Very weird day, the day after all the cuts. So we know the Bengals make this claim and they get Miles Hinton and we're like, okay, here's a tackler. Are they going to release Jalen Rivers or some debate? You know, I'm between Bengals fans. I'm on X. I'm talking on Twitter. Like, I think they should, I'd rather have Hinton over Foster. Maybe they should release Foster. And it really comes down to a move that the Bengals have made quite a few times. And you have a vested veteran that you can release that doesn't have to go through waivers and you can say, hey, we like you, Tanner Hudson, who is ultimately released, I kind of
Starting point is 00:11:27 avoided that for a second there, but we like you, Tanner, we want to bring you back. We can put you on the practice squad. We can call you up. If someone goes down, we want you. And if it's a guy like Tanner Hudson that has that relationship, you're not worried about him going off somewhere else because they did lose players today. We'll get to that. You can release a guy like this in Tanner Hudson. So it makes a ton of sense. It does make them a little bit more thin at tight end than I expected after the 53 man initial cut down. Went from a position where they had five tight ends on the roster and thought Cam Grady would get onto the practice squad. Now there's four tight ends on the roster and Tanner Hudson is in the wind for now.
Starting point is 00:12:05 And Tanner Hudson might be back on the practice squad tomorrow for all we know. It's very possible that Bengals would probably really like to keep him around. And that's why I was a little bit surprised if he was the cup. considering the cut candidates. I did consider tight end, but I consider Jack injuries as potentially a little bit more in danger, just because Tanner didn't play in that last preseason
Starting point is 00:12:26 game. And maybe he had a small injury that caused us to read into that more than we should have. We don't really know either way there. It might have just been that there's nothing else they need to see from him. They wanted to get the reps for the younger player. But not having anyone else, maybe Josh Katas, comes back on the practice squad at this point, just because of the
Starting point is 00:12:44 familiarity, maybe they're interested. in that one. Maybe they go externally, but there are still some spots left on this practice squad, Joe, that the Bengals will have to fill externally, certainly for offensive linemen. If Tanner Hudson is back on the practice squad,
Starting point is 00:12:57 though, with an agreement that, like, yeah, you'll be called up on game day. We're not ready to put Jack Hendries out there for week one. We want you on special teams for week one. And eventually we'll figure out some way to get you back on the 53.
Starting point is 00:13:10 That's plausible, right? That's possible for him because as a veteran, not subject to waivers, he can sign with the Bengals on the practice squad. As soon as he wants to, unless he's interested in exploring opportunities elsewhere, maybe he is going to get a 53-man opportunity elsewhere. Did you say that Cam Grandy went to the Vikings? I don't know if you said the team.
Starting point is 00:13:29 He chose to sign. Okay. He chose to sign with the Vikings practice squad. Also Mitchell Tinsley, if you haven't seen, chose to sign with the Texans practice squad. So a couple guys there. And we assume McKinley Jackson's going to seek opportunities elsewhere. I'm only bringing this up because we did talk a little bit about trade opportunities at cut down, cut down time. And I wondered about all of those guys.
Starting point is 00:13:53 We also, the Bengals didn't have any of their cuts claimed by any other team. So if we were thinking they're at really deep this year, well, other teams didn't agree so much and didn't have interest. What was the most surprising one that didn't get claimed for you? Sorry, and add what you were going to add about Braylon Lux that cuts you off. I think maybe I was thinking Tinsley. I was thinking maybe Charlie Jones for Return Man. But then I did read like the athletic had a list of players that were cut, the best players. And he put, I don't remember the writer was.
Starting point is 00:14:28 Excuse me there, if you remember Jake. But he put Braylin Lux number one as the best player that was cut. And I'm a big Braylin Lux fan. So I'm going to take a second here and say when we step back a day later, I thought I'd rather have Braylon Lux on the 53 if he's going to get claimed because now I was thinking he was going to get claimed. I'd rather have him than Josh Newton. And especially because you don't have a backup slot guy either right now, which is Cyr Taylor going on IR. And I thought about this.
Starting point is 00:14:55 And I'm like, man, you know, we didn't really criticize any of their decisions. But if I could and if if Lux got claimed, I would have had that take. But now we're okay. You can make that argument for sure that Braylon Lux, especially with the preseason he had in game specifically where Newton was making a lot of plays in practice. is this kind of been his MO in the NFL that hasn't always translated to games. Braylon Lux might be a gamer a little bit by comparison, where there's some players that just, for whatever reason,
Starting point is 00:15:20 I've talked to coaches about this. Their practice doesn't translate to games, and that goes both ways. Sometimes they don't practice as well, and they play really well, and sometimes they practice really well, and it doesn't translate on game day. So maybe a tale of two worlds there.
Starting point is 00:15:33 I don't know that Braylon Lux is practicing poorly. I'm not claiming that I've ever gotten that impression. I don't think we've ever heard anything like that. up Bradleyn Lux, but it was Daniel Popper who listed the 13 most interesting players on waiver wires. And I'm just looking to see if any of these guys were actually claimed. I don't know everyone that got claimed today. I think maybe the running back, DeRosier, DeRosier got claimed. Was that the one running back claim? There's one running back claimed. And we're talking about the Bengals looking for running back claims. There's one running back
Starting point is 00:16:05 claimed in the entire NFL. I did go over the entire list of every cut from every team. and I didn't really come away with too many running backs that I was interested in that you had to put a claim in. Like I think Damon Pierce was a Vest of Veteran, you'd have to claim him. The only other guy was Damian Martinez. He's been cut twice now, back-to-back years and get guys like Dean Connors who went undrafted. There was a bunch of low-ranking guy. So there really wasn't a running back to claim. And the most interesting guy probably of this preseason that barely played, Jamal Haynes,
Starting point is 00:16:34 as of now, isn't listed on the Bengals practice squad, as there are two other running backs listed on the practice squad. That's Kendall Milton and Kendrell Bullock, which surprises me, but Bullock was over Haynes pretty much all of free season. And Milton has been for a while now. Probably there are before. And, you know, Gary Brightwell has been mixed in a little bit. But it did seem like they have liked Kendall Milton for the last few years now.
Starting point is 00:17:00 Still, I watch Mal Haynes on this practice squad, Jake. This one that's going to be controversial, I think, with Bengals fans. I think when you do. a plus two play out of a minus two to plus two scale. This is the old PFF grading scale where you can get a grade from a zero to a plus two to a minus two for a given play. And the plus twos are very rare. When you have a plus two run, an exceptional run, a 1% run that you don't see every week in the NFL. And he did in that final preseason game.
Starting point is 00:17:30 That makes an impression on everyone. I'm sure it made an impression on the Bengals as well. But the reason that I wasn't surprised. and I don't know if you said you were surprised or not. The reason I wasn't surprised is the entire preseason these guys were ahead of Haynes. And I guess the corollary to what I claimed yesterday that you can't make a team in the final quarter of the preseason
Starting point is 00:17:53 is that you can't make your team of the preseason. You can impress other teams, but maybe you can't impress your own team because they've seen you in practice a whole time. They've seen, I guess, not enough in the case of Haynes to get him on the field until that point. He had one carry until that point.
Starting point is 00:18:14 We had seen some of Kentrell Bullock in previous games. And he was also pretty good in that final preseason game. He had a fumble, which you can and should hold against him. Can't be putting the ball on the ground. But he ran the ball really well himself in that last game. It just there wasn't the highlight run that Haynes had. And so I get that. The Milton choice, I guess is a little bit more interesting to me,
Starting point is 00:18:37 but that is a guy that they've built some trust with over the last couple of years. So it shouldn't be too surprising. And especially because they're only keeping three running backs that. I mean, Milton's pretty much running back four at this point. Even though he's on the practice squad, he's got familiarity. He can return, I believe. We saw him in kick returning situations earlier in his career. And he's a big body guy, so it gives him a little bit of that.
Starting point is 00:18:57 But yeah, I think what last point then on tight end and talking about Tanner Hudson being released, if he's not brought back because we kind of made it seem like a foregone conclusion, there is a chance that he isn't even brought back at all. Yeah, I think it's somewhere else. That's a great clarification. I think it's possible that he returns and technically feasible that he returns. Yeah. And if not, the way they currently stand, let's just take it because we have the day today.
Starting point is 00:19:20 If they bring them back tomorrow, we can, you know, update. But as it sits today, it's Drew Sample. It's Mike Keseki. It's Eric All and Jack entries. And that's kind of thin. A lot of people complained about keeping five tight ends. Like, why would you do this? Remember, Eric All is a very bonus territory player, right?
Starting point is 00:19:36 Like we're hoping he can stay healthy. We're hoping he can make an impact. It's been years since he's been able to get through a season healthy. You know, I'm knocking on wood. I don't want the bad juju out there. But just, you know, I think all five of these guys would have played with injuries being the rookie that they're trying to protect. So we'll get to the practice squad.
Starting point is 00:19:55 I think there's some fun conversation there of who's there. And we had to play a return to practice. That's a very important piece to this Bengals defense in 2026. We'll get to all that coming up next. Football is finally back, and that means Sundays are about to get a whole lot more interesting. Every week brings new matchups, breakout players, big performances, and plenty of storylines to follow. And if you like getting even more engaged with the players and the stats that you're tracking and you're watching, there's a new way to make game day more exciting.
Starting point is 00:20:25 Price Fix is bringing out its best offered yet for kickoff. New users who sign up can get $150 in lineups so they win their first $5 lineup. and prize picks is now available nationwide. With prize picks, you're building daily fantasy lineups by picking two to six players and selecting more or less on their projected stats like passing yards, rushing yards, or even fantasy score.
Starting point is 00:20:47 And for week one's opener, Sam Darnel just needs one yard against the New England Patriots to cash his pick. It doesn't get any easier than that. If you want to get started today, you can download the app, use code, locked on NFL in prize picks. You'll get $150 instantly in lunch.
Starting point is 00:21:03 If you win your first $5 lineup, that's at prize picks, run your game. So I have one closing thought on the tight end room. And then we'll discuss the rest of the practice squad here and the good news that we got from the clips of Bengals practice that occurred on Sunday. Because as far as we know, unless they lied to us, they didn't practice on Monday. The last point is that this is a bigger opportunity potentially for Jack Andrews if Tanner Hudson doesn't return. Because we outlined a scenario where Tanner Hudson is on the practice squad and is called up for week one to be a a special teamer to play tight end four, but that doesn't happen. Then expanded opportunity for Jack injuries right away. Couldn't see him game day active as early as week one where previously I would
Starting point is 00:21:47 have assumed inactive. And it's still possible that they only go with three tight ends, but a much greater chance for him to be active if Tanner Hudson isn't around. Yeah, good call. And that'd be good because we're both big believers in Jack entries. And it sounds like the Bengals are as well. It's nice to get that confirmation right when these guys all make the roster, although they tend to do that in Cincinnati. But if you're a big fan of any of these prospects and like them and their future upside, it sounds like the Bengals share that with you. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:22:13 And so with that said, the Bengals have officially added 11 players. So there's practice squad. Unofficially, that is 12 because one of them, assigning from the Los Angeles Chargers needs to get to town and pass a physical. That will be defensive end edge rusher Garmin Randolph. And we'll talk about the list here.
Starting point is 00:22:31 Josh Johnson, not on the practice squad, I'm not terribly surprised by this because somebody might want him to come back up. And that might be a little bit of a more complicated conversation. Would love for him to return and be available to the Bengals in some capacity because of how good he was in the preseason. But Sean Clifford is a Bengals practice squad quarterback. That would add the asterisk that is for now there. They have four open spots on the practice squad still.
Starting point is 00:22:55 We talked about the two running backs earlier. Two wide receivers right now and Noah Thomas, who we thought was a no-brainer. We thought they actually maybe hid him in the third preseason game a little bit. bit to make it easier to get him through waivers because their teams out there like Miami putting in 12 different waiver claims and having a second little draft for themselves for cast off from other teams because they're so bereft of talent. Not bad, no, honestly, I thought they made some fun moves. Not this, this is locked on Bengals, but I looked at it.
Starting point is 00:23:22 I looked at it and said, solid. I mean, and I wonder how that impacted team. Somebody made the point. I think it was one of our listener. It might have been SC Palm, who has a lot of good points. following the entire league, was talking about how teams might have made interesting roster decisions
Starting point is 00:23:39 to try to shelter guys from Miami specifically, knowing how many claims Miami might put in, and they did. That was six or seven claims they were awarded. They might have even put in more than that. Their waiver priority was actually behind the Bengals at 11. But the other wide receiver of the Bengals keep is Jordan Moore,
Starting point is 00:23:56 who I think is in his second year, right, from Duke? Yeah. I remembering that correctly. And there are no offensive linemen on this practice squad right now. They're 10 on the 53, which is a lot. But there are no practice squad offensive linemen right now. You would have to imagine they'll go add somebody there to fill out the offensive side of the ball because they've got every other position but tight ends.
Starting point is 00:24:18 So maybe a tight end and a couple of offensive linemen from external teams. If it's not Tanner Hudson could be the direction on the offensive side of the ball here. You know what else? We didn't mention that Liam Anderson went to a different practice squad. That's right. He went to do you have it? I was thinking Colts. but now it really doesn't matter but it right really doesn't matter they got joe giles
Starting point is 00:24:40 harris they got shaka hayward on the practice squad they got brail and lux they got rusty east so they're good at those positions if they need someone i would think one other corner would be valuable for them and yeah maybe it was a dolphins i'm in dolphins of course of course yeah of course they just added a bunch of players but yeah it's a good opportunity for him to make it there again doesn't matter for us we got Shaka Hayward and Joe Giles Harris back. They can be elevated. They're good special teamers. You could almost rotate.
Starting point is 00:25:07 You could do like three games of one guy, three games of the other guy for elevations, get you to almost the midway point of the season with those guys helping you on special teams if you absolutely have to because they only kept four linebackers, which people questioned. But we also, you know, warn that that would be the case because of playing more three, four defense. You really don't need that many. Jay Morrison pointed out that they haven't kept less than five linebackers since
Starting point is 00:25:31 he started tracking rosters in his roster spreadsheet in 2006, I think he said. And the biggest haven't been a three, four defense in all that time. That was a big difference this year. They're putting less linebackers on the field. And we talked about the likelihood that he'd get those guys under the practice spot. So right now you've got seven guys on the defensive side of the ball in the practice squad between Braylon Lux, Isaiah Foskey, Garmin Randolph, Howard, Kraus, Hayward, Joe,
Starting point is 00:25:55 Al-Shares, Rusty's. They got their priority guys, I think, on defense. because I think that they probably had Giles Harris and Hayward ahead of Liam Anderson even though we might have done that a little bit differently. It was kind of a bummer to see him go. He had a good preseason. But Foskey, I think, was very much a priority keep for them on the practice squad. Braylon Lux, Howard Cross.
Starting point is 00:26:16 I think those guys were all guys they really wanted to keep around depth that they really valued. And I think that's also true of the linebackers. But no outside corner here. If you're looking for them to go eight and eight, they maybe could add one more corner to the practice squad. Maybe you could add a safety, maybe you could add a defensive tackle, although with six defensive tackles on the 53. You got seven between the 53 and your practice squad. You might not need another one there. But still room to add some guys to this practice
Starting point is 00:26:43 squad, Joe. I've got one other one other take now because they are going to sign Garmin Randolph, who was a 25-year-old rookie out of Baylor, went undrafted, very long angular edge player listed at six foot eight. I think he actually measured in at six six and some change almost six foot seven. So you see that. I think he had three and a half sacks his final year at Baylor, even though he was 24 and some change. So it's not power forward on the roster and they had get one. My point on all this is that sounds like to be the end for my son, Antoine Paul Rylund at that position. And that makes me sense. So while I still get Braylon Lux and I'll keep banging that drum, uh, the Antoine Paul Rylan dream probably is dead. But you know what
Starting point is 00:27:25 dream isn't dead? That they have two really good. corners on this team and to start week one as Dax Hill returns to practice today. The Bengals put out like a sizzle reel of highlights almost from their practice on Sunday. I keep saying today, but we got the video today Monday. But you can see Dax involved. You can see him dressed. You can actually see him in some type of either seven on seven on seven or 11 on 11 because he's covering of pass from Joe Burrow to Colby Young and a really quick still shot,
Starting point is 00:27:55 the screen grab that I took. And that's good. I mean, stack sales on pace for week one. And the Bengals seem like all systems go on the defensive side. Honestly, that's one of the mission accomplished things about the preseason is they're going to walk into week one pretty healthy.
Starting point is 00:28:10 Yeah, we didn't know about the Brian Parker and Drew when we boldly proclaimed that on Friday night. And that's a bummer, but he's also not a starter. It's interesting when you think about the continuity that we've talked about, Joe, and they'll have continuity at corner now with out any disruption,
Starting point is 00:28:24 hopefully with those guys. being ready to go for week one and Jalen Davis played a lot of slot for them down the stretch. So in some ways that can be seen as continuity. That's still a place where I guess with Braylon Lux there, you feel a little bit better about it, but still wouldn't hate an addition there if they're looking around to make additions. I think additions at this point would be a little bit surprising. Maybe you see one extension get done. I don't even know how hopeful we are for that.
Starting point is 00:28:48 That's probably a conversation for a different day. But to me, it was interesting to look at all the continuity they have on the offensive side of the ball. Obviously, they've overhauled a lot of their defense. The depth on the offensive side of the ball is completely churned. You got different backup wide receivers this year. I think all of them are different. I mean, Kishon Williams was with the team late last year. But if you go week one to week one, though, there's massive churn there with Dante
Starting point is 00:29:15 Myers making the team. And I think maybe practicing again for Jamar, we'll have to keep an eye on Jamar Chase's status as we get some of these partially open practices later this week is he had that hyper extension and they're presumably really easing him back in wide receiver depth totally overhauled tight end depth totally overhauled behind gaseki and sample where now it's eric all returning and jack injuries no tanner hudson there for now and we'll see if that changes or not also true of the offensive line where they returned one backup in jalen rivers and everybody else in that offensive line room outside of the starters the depth completely turned on offense so i just found that to be an interesting little note last note for the for me, Joe, would be that we found out why Annie Agar was in Cincinnati all those weeks ago. When she came to Cincinnati and said there was some big NFL thing happening, she's going to be working with Jemar Chase on the podcast that he told folks about when he had, think he was on the Pat McAfee Show with T. Higgins on Radio Row. The, I don't even remember what it's called, something about one. Chasing number one.
Starting point is 00:30:17 Is it chasing Uno or chasing number one? One of those two things, the show that he was working on is now going to be in partnership with Annie Agar. And so if you're wondering, we got that answer. Thought maybe it was the NFL draft, which some people did when they saw that. It is not. It is, in fact, the Jamar Chase collaboration. So now we know what to look for there for his show. But that's all the news we got on this Monday.
Starting point is 00:30:39 The Bengals will be back at practice Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, this week. And so we might have some limited thoughts to get you from the limited bits of practice that we will observe. And we'll keep an eye on this roster and how things are shaking up what the rest of this practice squad has in store right here on. Lockdown Bengals. Until then, thanks for listening to this episode of the Locktime Bengals podcast. Today. And have a good one.
