Starting point is 00:00:00 The Cincinnati Bengals will play one more football game in the 2025 season. Let's break down what we're looking for as the Bengals wrap up. A season that's going to go down as a very forgettable one in the Joe Borough era. You are locked on Bengals, your daily Cincinnati Bengals podcast. Part of the Locked on Podcast Network, your team every day. Well, on Bengals fans. And welcome to another episode of the Lockdown Bengals podcast, part of the Lockdown Podcast network, the number one sports podcast network in the land.
Starting point is 00:00:39 Happy New Year, folks. We're recording this on January 1st. And the Bengals play one more football game in the 2025 season, even though it's 2026. Happens every year. Gets me every time. We're going to break down what we're looking for from the Bengals as they wrap up their season.
Starting point is 00:00:54 And like I said, a season that for the most part is going to be one that we don't look back on with a ton of fondness. But Joe Burrow has returned and is playing fun football. So hopefully we get one final bit of fun offense, fun football to watch for the Cincinnati Bengals to wrap up. Because they're playing their starters, they're trying to win. Might as well have fun doing it. Today's episode brought to you by FanDuel.
Starting point is 00:01:17 Before tip off, check out the FanDuel app and see what's dropping during NBA happy hour every Friday from 6 to 7.30 p.m. Eastern Time. James, the Bengals are playing the Browns this week. And I think a lot of our listeners are probably watching Oregon and Texas Tech right now. As we're recording this episode, those teams are playing Ohio State lost to Miami on New Year's Eve. I think a lot of people watch that game. A lot of people are talking about David Bailey and Ruben Bain and Caleb Downs and probably Peter Woods. And well, we're going to talk about those guys for a while here in the near future. But today, we're going to talk about this final contest for the Bengals of the 2025 season because then we're not going to have any.
Starting point is 00:02:04 Bengals football to talk about for about nine months. So got to enjoy the football while we've got it. We've got it here for one more game. The everydayers, welcome back. One final game to talk about with you all that are with us every day. And all of you who make Lockdown Bengals your first list and appreciate all of you. And Miles Garrett, obviously looking for the record here, James, probably the biggest dramatic storyline of this game.
Starting point is 00:02:30 But is that the number one thing you're watching for? for anything else? What's on your mind as you think about this final game? Well, one, you just reminded me that there's a bowl game on, which I was like, oh, man, full disclosure. I'm like, I have a TV like 10 feet front. I'm like, oh, well, very rarely do we record when football is on. Yeah. Like, so, or I'm on the road, I'm at the stadium or whatever, or it's like noon on a Tuesday. And so there's not football on normally. So, yeah, it's going to be nice as I brush up on things here while we chat. But it also, did you wish anyone happy New Year yet? I think I did.
Starting point is 00:03:08 I either said it in my brain or I said it out loud. You can say it too. When you were doing your intro, I was like, oh, we got to make sure we wish everyone a happy new year because we're grateful and thankful for all of you that support us, whether you're in every day or you're coming back for the draft takes. I think that's the misconception that a lot of people have, like at least in my life, they're like, oh, well, things are going to slow down. And it's like, well, yeah, I won't go to the stadium.
Starting point is 00:03:32 but I think there's going to be a lot of people that start coming back now because they want to know offseason stuff, what's going to happen. And obviously we're going to have you covered every step of the way. The Miles Garrett thing is obviously number one from a NFL history standpoint, storyline standpoint. And we can definitely discuss that. But for me, I think it would be really big for this offense to drop 30 on the Browns. to kick their ass to quite frankly to put it exactly how it should be like if i'm zach taylor joe burrow jemar chase t higgins joe called them the best defense in the nfl and i get it i understand why and it's been a tough matchup for them you're playing really well right now what do you have to
Starting point is 00:04:23 prove just that you can contain miles garrett even if he does get the sack record i don't think you can really worry about that and then go drop 30 like you did on miami because the last time you play an a fc north team you got boat raced and your season ended so that alone would be uh would be something offensively that i would be looking for have have some consistent success against a defense that has has had your number for the most part and really dominated you in week one the bengals won that game 17 to 16 but the offense was rough first game of the season in cleveland always a little bit rougher always league colleagues playing in that game They have made a trade at cornerback in Cleveland since the last time these teams played.
Starting point is 00:05:07 So it's Tyson Campbell will be playing alongside Denso Ward in the secondary now. Devin Bush looks like he is light bulb on in the second level, Carson Swessinger. A couple linebackers that I'm sure the Bengals would like to have. Kevin Bush is a free agent, by the way. So if you're a free agent shopping at linebacker, you can't Kevin Bush in this game. And to your expectation or hope, it would be great if the Bengals can go out there and drop 30 on the Browns. I think that's a high bar. I do think this is.
Starting point is 00:05:45 As Joe said, I think this is one of the best defenses, if not the best defense in the NFL. Miles Garrett drives a lot of that. Alex Wright on the other side drives a lot of that. Mason Graham winning a little bit more as a pass rush or down the stretch drives that. It's all from the front is my point here. and Dentsel Ward always seems to get up for this game. And Tyson Campbell, this will be the second time Tyson Campbell's seen the Bengals this year on his second team. The Bengals got him the first time around, but he's been playing better in this Brown's defense as well.
Starting point is 00:06:13 But there isn't a whole lot of pressure from the other side of the ball. Like my high expectations in this game are on the defense. Don't go out there and look like you did against the Jets. Don't go out there and make Shadur Sanders look awesome. The way you made Justin Fields and that Jets offense look awesome. let them score 39 points. The defense has been better lately. They've been against these teams that are down and out,
Starting point is 00:06:36 putting up performances like their teams, like they're playing against teams that are down and out. You should be doing that against this Brown's offense, one of the worst in the NFL, which is why their record is what it is. It would be great to see them take that step against this Brown's defense, or Brown's defense, yeah, to close out the year.
Starting point is 00:06:54 Yeah. And put together another performance where you have all your pieces on offense, and the whole idea of your team, the whole concept of the Joe Burrow team that needs to change in the future, to be honest. But the whole concept of the team this year is, we can get by with an okay defense.
Starting point is 00:07:11 They didn't really get an okay defense, but we can get by with an okay defense because our offense is good enough to go toe to toe with any defense in the NFL. That's the idea. And they haven't really shown that, at least in a while. They did it in one game against the Steelers.
Starting point is 00:07:27 The Steelers have a pretty good defense on paper. The second game against the Steelers didn't go so well. It was Joe Flacco. I get it. Getting blanked against the Ravens. Can't do that. And that's, you know, when you're down and out a little bit as well.
Starting point is 00:07:40 But that game really makes you down and out. So if you do it against a bad team here, even though it is week 18 and this game has no other stakes, Miles Garrett's playing for a record. It's still the Battle of Ohio. These teams still don't like each other. So you go out there and you put up some points. And you can feel good about that at the very least.
Starting point is 00:07:59 least. Yeah, that's, that's it. It's like what is there meaning? Well, yeah, there's meaning in individuals and we've talked about that for a few weeks. Like, you can build on it and there are guys we can discuss specifically. But as far as like the team, I think it would be big for this offense to do that. I do. And there isn't many overarching takeaways I'll be able to have from any week 18 matchup. But when you're going up against a defense that has a lot, they're playing for a lot, they're clearly still playing hard.
Starting point is 00:08:35 We saw it against the Steelers and they win that game. Obviously, they have the Miles Garrett record element of it, which we can discuss because it is a big part of this. Like, they're going to be playing really hard. And so if you can match that and go out and play the way, the way you played in Miami and then the way you played against, to Arizona, two bad teams. The Browns are better than those teams because of their defense. Not that Miami is far off. And if you look at the records, Miami is certainly better.
Starting point is 00:09:09 But I look at it and I'm like, man, this Browns matchup is far more terrifying than either of those games, regardless of records or anything like that. So if Joe goes out there and completes 75% of his passes or 70% of his passes and is efficient and the offense is moving the ball up and down the field and scoring, well, that would be, that would be a heck of a thing to have happen. And there aren't many scenarios where I think you could say that in any week 18 game. That means nothing really. But I do think it would be meaningful for this group because they're going to be asked to do it again next year.
Starting point is 00:09:42 And they're going to have to deal with Miles Garrett and Denzo Ward. I looked up his contract just in case. I was like, oh, cap casualty, no chance. $29 million in dead money. They only save $3 million if they moved on from Denzel Ward. That's not happening. I was just thinking like, could he be? No, it's not happening.
Starting point is 00:09:57 So you're going to deal with these guys next year as well. So doing that and having some success against them, I do think it matters. The Miles Garrett's sack record obviously matters as well. We can discuss that and continue. It is a season finale day here on Locked on Bengals. We'll continue the conversation coming up next. Today's show is brought to by Robin Hood. Nobody knows your money goals better than you.

Starting point is 00:11:11 move for figuring out how to deal with miles garrett again as well one last thing that i wanted to close on with the offense and and the reason that we're talking about it the way we are because so many people like who cares season's over why are you guys talking about this talk about talk about the draft positioning we'll talk about draft positioning because even at the bengals lose If the Bengals lose, the first things I'm going to talk about, as long as everybody's healthy, are, hey, man, look at that draft order. Look at how that has broken the Bengals way here in Week 18 a little bit. But the last thing on the offense for me is it's proof. It's another piece of evidence that your proof of concept for your team, and this is what I was trying to get to previously.
Starting point is 00:11:52 your idea for your team, your concept for your offense, can do that for you against good defenses. Because you're going to run back essentially this entire offense. If they can, I think ideally they're running back this entire offense. Maybe there's a different piece of tight end or wide receiver three or wide receiver four or maybe there's a new starter somewhere. But if they can put up a strong performance against the Cleveland Brown's defense, that's obviously still playing well, has been great all year. year, Miles Garrett chasing that sack record, all these things.
Starting point is 00:12:27 Yeah. It's just another feather in the cap that, hey, this idea for the offense works. Now let's go get a defense, right? And that can shape your offseason in that way. Now, the Miles Garrett's sack record is its own conversation. And people are invoking the Brett Farr of Mike Strahan moment in history. You know, I went and watched before we started recording out of curiosity. just because, and I know Joe Burrow doesn't see it this way, James,
Starting point is 00:12:56 but I don't want to watch a Miles Garrett highlight reel that is some incredible win, incredibly violent hit on Joe Burrow for 20 years while this stack record stands and it's, you know, the career highlight moment for Miles Garland. I don't want to watch that personally, selfishly. Joe isn't going to play that way. He talked about it on Wednesday, but what are your thoughts around this? Yeah, I think it sucks that he didn't already get the record because you know he's going to get it. Like I expected to get it.
Starting point is 00:13:29 And I asked Joe and he said, he's gotten me a lot. He's gotten me a lot. And I think he's gotten him 10 times. I believe it is is the number I saw. And maybe I'm off on that. Look, it's the downside to Miles Garrett being in your division and you being the drop back passing team that you are and having such a. prolific quarterback because there's going to be a ton of highlights of Miles sacking Joe. That's why I mentioned, by the way, if you go hang 30, then when Browns Bengals is mentioned,
Starting point is 00:14:01 you're going to see some of those highlights too and not just the Denzel Ward interception from 2021. Remember that the pick six where Joe just gets shaken out of his boots and that really dictated that game. Like there's just, there's something about this matchup that's so Miles Garrett based. And it would have been a huge win had he kept his trade request in and got moved. And this is kind of going down to Brown's tangent now a little bit, and I'm not trying to. But I told Spencer German the other day on our crossover, like, oh, this is offseason kind of.
Starting point is 00:14:37 They should trade Miles Garrett. I really believe that. Like, he's going to be as valuable as any defensive player ever after this season because I do think he gets the record Sunday. I don't think the Bengals are, we know the Bengals aren't going to say, all right, well, you're not getting the record and call plays that way. But if you're going to do that, you better win the game and you better be good on offense. That's the other element here. Like if Joe's going to take those hits, if he's going to be subject to the 23rd sack of
Starting point is 00:15:08 the season for Miles Garrett, well, at least make it worth it. And worth it means scoring. Like the worst case scenario here, Jake, is week one, where it's this. just awful, ugly, bruise them up game, Miles Garrett gets the record, and it goes down to the wire, and it's 17 to 16, and you don't feel great about the offense,
Starting point is 00:15:29 and even if they win, the season's over. And I know for a fact, after last year, and they were obviously playing for something when they played Pittsburgh last year, and everyone saw Joe on quarterback the next day, like, there's nothing I can do about it. I can just sit here and watch.
Starting point is 00:15:44 He was so beat up after that Pittsburgh game. Like, you can't tell him. hell because he's on the couch and he's eating a sandwich and all those things. Like next day in the locker room, it's noticeable when Joe has a limp or something like that. And we weren't in there the next day because there was a Sunday. They were dark, no media access. I know he was really beat up after that game. They were playing for something.
Starting point is 00:16:06 I don't want him to be really beat up on Monday regardless, which is a, it is a tough ask. There's no doubt. It's been a good year for the offensive line, especially in the second half, Marius Mims a big part of that. Dylan Fairchild, Dalton, Reisner, big part of that. Orlando Brown, he's had his down moments, but he's also a big part of that. Ted Karras has been steady along the way.
Starting point is 00:16:28 I mean, it's at the point where we're not talking about, like, man, they've really got to fix this offensive line. And finally, James, your preseason proclamation, that this should be the best offensive line of the Joe Burrow era has come to fruition with an offensive line that's, like, playing pretty well. And not just yours. I mean, I've said it, too, over the years.
Starting point is 00:16:46 And then I started resisting it to be like, I'll believe it when I see it. But I mean, what a week it would be if they can go out there and run back what they've been doing recently against some pretty bad pass rushes against the best pass rush they'll have seen since the last time they played Pittsburgh. And it didn't go so well the second time around in pass protection. They haven't really faced a team with guys like this. And there's only one guy like Miles Garrett really. But guys that approximate that on the defensive front since they played. Pittsburgh. And it didn't go so well for them in that game since then it's been pretty darn good.
Starting point is 00:17:22 If they can go out there and be reasonable against this Cleveland front, it's another, you know, vote of confidence. And yeah, get Dalton Riser back here. Maybe you address depth a little bit. Maybe you address swing tackle a little bit. Maybe Jalen Rivers becomes that. Maybe not. Maybe you find a piece here or there, but you feel pretty good about your starters.
Starting point is 00:17:44 That'd be a great place to be after. this week 18 game. And so that would be another thing to watch for and a thing that can shape, it's going to be our last impression, right? So it's going to shape our lasting feelings about, okay, this is what the team needs to do in the offsees. We're pretty sure we know what direction we want them to go.
Starting point is 00:18:02 But this is the last, the last little bit of information we're going to get as we start to think about our ideal offseason plans for this team. Yeah, it is. And I, this is going to be a shocker to a lot of people. I don't think, even if they do bring back everyone offensively, I don't want to rule out adding offense, like in general, whether it's offensive line or running back or whatever. Because I do think that the, it's real easy. Let's say they score 30 on Sunday.
Starting point is 00:18:37 Everyone's healthy. And how does this offense operate without T or without Jammar? Or, by the way, if Joe's nicked up. Like there's, there's a lot of questions about this roster. And they need to be a good enough roster to where if Joe misses a month, they don't go one in three or oh and four. And they went oh and four in their first four games without Joe, obviously.
Starting point is 00:19:04 So that's a huge offseason topic as well. But man. Yeah, we're going to have a conversation this offseason about like adding pieces to the offense and the marginal benefits. there, but then like the reality, the pragmatic benefits of building depth and how you balance those things when they clearly have like dire needs for anywhere from four to six spots on this defense. Speaking of this defense, James, should we talk about that for a few minutes here? To wrap our final preview show of the year, what do you think?
Starting point is 00:19:36 We should. And I was going to make some kind of Gino Stone snarky comment, but I'm not going to. It's a new year, new me. So we'll talk about the defense coming out. next. Today's show is brought to you by Fandall. Fandall is America's number one sports book. And look, we get it. The Bengals, they only have one more game left, by the way. Seven and a half
Starting point is 00:20:02 point favorites on Fandall right now. The over, under, I'm checking to make sure it was at 44.5, Jake. So I'm going to see if it moved. The point is whether it's the NFL, whether it's NBA, whether it's, you're thinking, oh, well,
Starting point is 00:20:18 the Cincinnati Reds are going to make another move. Yeah, it's 44 and a half, seven and a half point favorites for the Bengals. This is your chance to get in on all the week 18 action with Fandle. It's America's number one sports book for a reason. They have all the props, all the odds. Obviously, the college football playoff is in full swing. You can wager on that as well. Miami upsetting Ohio State.
Starting point is 00:20:37 All that means is it gets downs that much closer, that much closer to being a Bengal. For those that are thinking about that safety position, look at Jake. Jake's already thinking about positional value, baby. Look at him already doing it. That is not what that headshake was about, to be clear. Okay. That's the beauty of Fandle is anything from NFL draft futures, which they will be there, to something as simple as a live same game parlay.
Starting point is 00:21:03 Check it out today by going to Fandul and downloading the Fandle app. And by the way, NBA is in full swing as well. Check out their new NBA happy hour every Friday from 6 to 730 Eastern, a little basketball, a little action, and a whole lot of Friday energy. That's NBA Happy Hour only on Fandall, the official sports book partner of the NBA. James, this defense has been a sore spot all year. Statistically, since the buy, they've been reasonable. They've been the defense that we asked them to be this year.
Starting point is 00:21:38 Statistically since the buy. That includes some clunkers. That includes a second half against the Buffalo Bills that was dreadful. That includes a pretty bad game against the Baltimore Ravens, when the offense wasn't going either in week 15. And the whole team was probably at its lowest or second or third lowest. Lowest, certainly with Joe Burrow in that game. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:22:02 Second half against the Patriots, not good enough. Second game against the Steelers, not good enough. The entire first half of the season, not good enough. But recently, they've strung together moments in games against good offenses, like the Patriots, like the Bills for a few drives. and more than just a few moments against bad offenses, against Miami, against Arizona, against that same Ravens offense that was struggling in week 13,
Starting point is 00:22:33 now can they do it against another bad defense? Just like I don't want to see this Miles Garrett highlight forever that I think I'm going to have to see forever. I don't want to be hearing about Shadur Sanders coming on in this final game of the season against this Bengals defense. Oh, man. I mean, maybe that gets the Browns to commit to Shadur for another year.
Starting point is 00:22:57 And there's a silver lining there. But I don't think Shadurr Sanders is good. This Brown's offensive line is a mess. They're down. Quinchon Junkins. They don't have reliable wide receivers. This Brown's offense is worse than any offense they've played this year. And given what they've done lately and given that they're running all these guys back
Starting point is 00:23:18 and we'll talk about whether or not we think they're going to make a move at linebacker that they need to make, they better go out there and put on a show against Shadurr Sanders and this Brown's offense that is just so far from anything that approaches watchable NFL offense. Yeah, I get it. I do. That's kind of my fear. I think the Bengals are going to win the game. And if you win 20 to 16, I'll just throw out a score, 20 to 16.
Starting point is 00:23:48 and the defense forces three turnovers and Joe Burrow is 18 for 32 and he's got a little limp to him afterwards and he was hit eight times sack three times that's just that's gonna suck okay and I think that's like
Starting point is 00:24:05 a pretty likely outcome like all the above and it's that just stinks that stinks for everybody involved and you're right they should this defense should be able to get pressure on Shador. Shador holds the ball.
Starting point is 00:24:22 I watched him at Colorado hold the ball. Not shocked at all that in his first preseason action. He held the ball and he took some bad sacks. He's going to do that because he tries to make plays and he drifts back. And so Shamar Stewart, guess what, man? You got one last week? Get two this week. Get two this week.
Starting point is 00:24:41 Have a big week. Get that momentum. Have a trio day. Get three. and then you have four sacks in your rookie year and something to build on. Like that's what you want to see. And the Browns, what they've done,
Starting point is 00:24:57 like last week, Shador, high completion percentage and two interceptions. He's going to give you chances to get the ball. Maybe Geno Stone pats his stats a little bit, right? See, that's kind of optimistic. I'm not taking too big of a swing. New you, new you.
Starting point is 00:25:13 Yeah, that's right. Maybe Geno Stone gets an interception or two. but this that would be how on brand would that be by the way uh huh yeah gino stone four picks you say you know anyways stop it i'm just saying you've already broken your new year's resolution i'm not i'm just saying how on brand would it be if they're like well stop it i i i think this defense should like like i'm hoping the office offense can be dominant. I think this defense should be dominant, which is a weird thing to say.
Starting point is 00:25:52 Like, they should be able to control the game, which this is the other part that scares me. Zach Taylor is going to go into this game being comfortable punning on fourth and four. And like, you know he is. AFC North. We feel good about our defense. I don't think he's going to be like, all right, let's drop back here with Miles Garrett, fourth and four at the 45. Do you? Like early? I don't. No, yeah, no. I think he's going to be super conservative
Starting point is 00:26:20 because he believes that the Bengals defense will win their matchup with the Brown's offense. Yeah. How's the weather looking? Haven't looked. Haven't looked. You hear typing, that's because I'm looking up the weather. Sunday, 38, cloudy, see the wind,
Starting point is 00:26:37 not very windy. Not ideal kicking conditions. I was hoping for one more long, like 60-yard attempt for Evan McPherson. Don't think we're going to get that. 70. It's a little cold for the ball to fly that well. Last thing.
Starting point is 00:26:50 He's had a great year. Yeah. Yeah, he's been much better. Whole special teams unit. And I treated this and somebody was very unhappy that I said something positive because he can't please everybody ever, no matter what. But special teams unit for the Bengals has been really good this year. Coverage unit's been good.
Starting point is 00:27:08 The kickers have been good. Longsapper, maybe has some room for more consistency. But so does a punter. but special teams overall been good. Anyway, last thing that I wanted to get to here was the draft order stuff real quick. The Bengals lose. They have a chance to get up to eight in the draft order.
Starting point is 00:27:27 They're currently picking 10th that the season were to end today. New Orleans plays Atlanta. Both those teams are on winning streaks. But if New Orleans manages to beat Atlanta in Kansas City, I would expect, we'll beat Vegas as Vegas is continuing to try to tank for that first pick.
Starting point is 00:27:44 Cincinnati could if they lose go to eight if they win well then you're hoping that Atlanta beats New Orleans and Miami somehow beats New England who's playing for I think seating still yeah they they
Starting point is 00:28:03 I think have a chance at the one seed if Denver loses so unlikely for Miami flip a coin for the Atlanta, New Orleans game. Realistically, though, you're still talking about anywhere from from 8 to 12 for the Bengals. If they lose, they're between 8 and 10.
Starting point is 00:28:23 If they win, they're probably picking 12th or 11th. 12th, probably, I think. Maybe. Yeah. Odds-wise, if you look at some of the analytics, and I mean, it's basically 75-ish percent, 80, well, no, it's like 85 percent that they're picking 11 or. 12. And part of that is a lot of Yeah, a lot of people think that they're going to win, obviously.
Starting point is 00:28:51 If not, well, then yeah, they have a chance to move up, but the scenario, here's the downside. We know they're playing their starters. It's like the scenario where they lose isn't going to feel good, even with the draft position. Not in the moment, but by the time we get to draft season, hopefully we'll have forgotten about it. Well, will the how they lose, right?
Starting point is 00:29:15 Yeah. Because I don't think they just go out there and lose. I don't. So what went wrong to cause that loss? Is it just that three fumbles and everyone's healthy? And it's just Miles Garrett had, you know, a forced fumble and Denzo Ward picked it up for a touchdown. And then there's a pick six. Like if that happens, then fine.
Starting point is 00:29:34 I could get over that. But you get my point here is I feel like the path that I'm losing is probably going to involve something that wouldn't be, wouldn't be fun to talk about. So maybe not. Maybe I'm wrong. Yeah. I mean, if they go out there and lay an egg, it's not going to be pleasant. We'll have the silver lining of potential draft positioning, but it will not be a pleasant path to get there at this point because they're starting their starters all along.
Starting point is 00:29:58 Now, if they had never played their starters here in these last three games, they were tanking, which is something the Bengals have never done. We'd be talking about a potential top six pick. And we're not talking about that. You have one more thing to say about that before we get out of here? Yeah. Do you think Gino Stone should play or do you think they should save him? for next season.
Starting point is 00:30:17 Yeah, obviously they got to play Gino Stone in this one. I think if there's a path to that number eight draft pick, I think I never said New Year, new me. That's going to do it for this episode of the Locked-on Bengals podcast. We'll be back with you after the game for one final post-game show of the 2025 season. Until then, happy New Year, Ho day and have a good.
