Locked On Bengals - Daily Podcast On The Cincinnati Bengals - STILL WAITING | Cincinnati Bengals in the mix for Teven Jenkins
Episode Date: March 12, 2025On the surface, it was a quiet day for the Cincinnati Bengals while they worked on a clear priority in upgrading offensive guard. Jake Liscow and James Rapien break down the latest as the Bengals are ...one of the teams in pursuit of Teven Jenkins' services. While we waited until nearly midnight to record in case the move was coming, we're still waiting. The guys also discuss where the Bengals -should- be on Trey Hendrickson at this point (back at the negotiating table) and the remaining priorities for the team as they are still some distance from improving their roster for 2025.Join the Locked On Bengals Insider Community! https://joinsubtext.com/lockedonbengalsFind and follow Locked On Bengals on your favorite podcast platforms:Apple Podcasts: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/locked-on-bengals-daily-podcast-on-the-cincinnati-bengals/id1159723162Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/7AObc0lh0WmQl5fJVgtajsGoogle Podcasts: https://podcasts.google.com/feed/aHR0cHM6Ly9mZWVkcy5tZWdhcGhvbmUuZm0vbG9ja2Vkb25iZW5nYWxz?sa=X&ved=0CAYQrrcFahcKEwio_sXtj8nuAhUAAAAAHQAAAAAQAgStitcher: https://www.stitcher.com/show/locked-on-bengalsSupport Us By Supporting Our Sponsors!BetterhelpDiscover your relationship “green flags” with BetterHelp. those updates come directly to your phone number.
And it's been a busy day for the lockdown Bengals insider group
because the Bengals have been focused on offensive guard.
That was our expectation for them going into free agency.
That was a clear priority for this team.
And we're still waiting for the move or moves potentially to happen at this position.
do do do do do do yeah it's uh waiting and waiting and waiting and waiting some more i mean i wanted
to get my haircut today jake and i was like i don't know like totally slipped my mind i know those of
you watching on youtube james is wearing a hat because he hasn't had his haircut yeah he hasn't had a
haircut and it's late and i was like you know what basically it's time for me to get a haircut
anytime if if i wake up and it's out of place then i know it's too long and so it's it's been out of
place for multiple days since I've woken up.
And so there you go.
There's enough about my hair.
But yeah, I thought something would happen.
We knew they were in on guard.
Our insiders knew they were in on guard.
We talked about it on our last show.
Spoiler, they're in on guard.
And nothing's happened yet.
And I think it will.
I think by the time a lot of people will see this or hear this,
Kevin Jenkins could be signed by the Bengals or someone else.
And that's probably the big domino that's going to fall here and start
some movement in the guard market.
Maybe the Bengals get him.
Maybe it's one of these other teams that I've heard that are interested,
whether it's the Giants or the Seahawks.
And once that happens, then let's say the Bengals get him.
Well, then the Giants and the Seahawks are going to pivot and go to their next guy.
And meanwhile, the Bengals will do the same thing if those other teams get them.
So I think Tevin Jenkins is kind of, I don't want to say holding up the market.
I don't want to do that.
But once the 27-year-old guard that's going into a second
contract gets sniped and scooped up and put on whatever team on a multi-year deal that's
going to make him very, very rich, well, then it's going to be the next guy.
And those teams will pivot and you'll start to see things speed up a little bit.
And it needs to speed up.
I mean, it's been such a slow process.
Even at guard, you've seen some big deals.
But the Will Friesda was ridiculous.
But overall, I look at it and it's like.
I expected more movement at guard, especially with the way the draft is this year.
And it just, it doesn't seem to be there.
Like the Bengals could still certainly add two guards.
And I would, even if they get Tevin Jenkins.
I would add another veteran guard.
Hopefully they're feeling that way too.
But, yeah, they're focused on Jenkins at this moment.
Jenkins has played both interior offensive line spots in his NFL career.
He has played tackle in his NFL
career as well. I would imagine that the move for Kevin Jenkins would be for right guard with the
Cincinnati Bengals. And then there's still a discussion as to how they would look to upgrade
left guard. Do they wait until the draft or whichever guard spot Jenkins isn't playing? Or do they make
that move for a veteran? After Jenkins, you would expect the next guy that is commanding the most
significant money on a multi-year deal to likely be Mackay Beckton, who of course broke out
in Philadelphia at Guard. He's just 26 years old. P.F. F. F. F. F. F. F. F.
PEP has him projected at three years, $10 million for Jenkins at three years,
$13.3 million per year.
Those are both per year numbers, not overall numbers.
So 30 over three for Bechton and 40 over three for Taven Jenkins.
And I think that's pretty accurate.
I think I'll probably be in that realm.
And will the Bengals go there?
I think that that's because I don't know about the money.
I know interest.
But the Bengals may be offering three for 30.
Who knows what they're offering, you know?
And when you look at the fries deal, he was projected at four years 57, ended up at five years 88.
So that's a three million more per year.
I think in general, the PFF estimates have been a little bit low this year on quite a few players.
The guard market not excused from that.
And so wouldn't surprise me if Taven Jenkins ends up making a little bit more than that projection, three years, $40 million total.
But we'll see where that falls into place.
that is what we have been waiting for largely.
And like you said, James, by the time people are listening to this,
maybe that decision has been made.
Would you pivot to Jedrick, are you in, did we talk about Jeddrich Will's?
We did briefly.
That wouldn't be my next choice.
That could be a choice to bring on to the roster to provide depth and then great.
If he wins the spot, fantastic.
It's gone swimmingly.
But I think my next choice would be for someone that I,
could trust and rely on right away and didn't have to count on being a rehabilitation
project.
Yeah, maybe it's, maybe it's Tavin and Jedrick.
And that's the route you go.
Like I just want two.
I'm still grimacing.
Are you?
Why?
I just would want better.
Like if you're going for a second one, I would want Will's to be competing with Cody Ford
and somebody else, maybe a rookie or maybe a better player.
He would be.
He would be competing with him.
for it though well yeah but i want that to be behind somebody that i can trust right away sure sure yeah
wills isn't going to sign to be a backup i mean and that's so that that would be that i'm not interested
most likely sure bettin signed for for very low-end money high-end backup money and a great
offensive line situation if it was a deal like beckton where he was competing for a starting job
but not expected necessarily to win one then okay but if the other option is cody for
Not okay.
I get that.
I think I would be in on the idea.
Beckton signed in May, basically.
I mean, it was, I think it was right before the draft.
And that situation is just, it's different.
Now, who knows?
Maybe Will's will end up there.
I, why do you say Tevinette at Left Guard, by the way?
Just experience.
I said, right?
I said, right.
Right.
Why did you say that not left?
Like, there's a.
The reason that I assume that is because,
that is a position that the Bengals released Alex Caput and is clearly vacant.
Cody Ford was also the best position for him last year was left guard.
What I would do?
Yeah, Cody Ford.
Cody Ford's a backup.
I agree with you there.
This is called the Tevin and Kevin connection.
And it would be Tevin Jenkins, left guard, and Kevin Zitler, right guard.
And that would be it.
It would be the Tevin and Kevin connection come together to protect Joe Burrow.
They put their powers together with Ted in the middle.
And boom, secure the pocket.
You have Cody Ford as a backup.
Who knows?
Maybe Jedrick Wilson is just out there in April and you can add him as a backup too.
But that's what I would go for.
And if the cap issue is an issue, and I don't like doing this, but I'm going to anyway,
Cordell Volson.
Create $3 million if you need to.
If that's what's holding you back from adding a Kevin Zeitler.
Like, you kidding me?
Like, do it.
That's fine.
If you can move on from a, at best, guy who's competing for a starting job to completely
upgrade your starting lineup, do it.
And so that's where I would be at.
I don't know about you.
And maybe it is, Kevin Jenkins of left guard.
Maybe that's a plan if that does, in fact, end up being the signing.
We'll talk about it more if and when he does sign.
But he has played certainly more in his career at left guard, 1,193 snaps of left guard in
his career to 852 snaps at right guard. His entire season in 2024 was a left guard,
split time a little bit in 23 was a right guard in 2022, has performed admirably at both
spots. Ideally, you have a clear plan for him. You're not moving him around a bunch because
you want him to be very comfortable with the side he's playing. But honestly, it would be
the first move that would significantly provide an upgrade, at least
on paper. And that's all you can really ask for at this point in free agency. It was a quiet day,
James, for the Bengals stars as Bengals fans are still asking often, anything on tea, anything on
T? We'll talk about what's going on there or what could be going on there coming up next.

Jens, before we pivot to talk about the Bengal stars, just to wrap up the guard conversation.
If it's not Simon Jenkins, they will need to pivot and pivot quickly.
I'm very curious to know what the backup plan would be there and what else they would be working on,
what other groundwork they've kind of put into place to say, hey, we might need to come to you quickly tomorrow.
Because that is a position that obviously they're prioritizing, obviously needs to be significantly better.
We've talked about Kevin Zitler.
You've talked a lot about Brandon Shurfers' Lopsch, and I've mentioned Wilhelm.
Hernandez, who's been great as a pass blocker, Dalton Reisner, another one that fits that
category as well. But for all those guys, I just mentioned, you would love to see them in addition
to the Tevin Jenkins move. And so we'll see what happens there. And I will be very curious to
see how that develops. Yeah, I think it's the, the pivot, obviously they have a backup plan,
but what I think is interesting is how many, at least for me, like,
quality like to me like sherf and zeitler are such clear upgrades like i'd be fine if they just
would have targeted them on targeted these guys on monday i would have already done it i would have
prioritized one of those guys and whether it's jenkins or insert whoever else that you can get
to play left guard maybe it is beckton but to me however you can find a way to get to that's what i
want we'll see if they do it we'll see if they listen real quick just for full disclosure and
case anyone isn't aware. The reason I mentioned Jedrick Wills, it's because he was the first round
pick left tackle of the Browns when Scott Peters was the assistant offensive line coach in Cleveland.
It's interesting because the parallels are pretty similar to Mackay Beckton last year with Frank
Pollock. Frank Pollock was in New York when they drafted Beckton. It didn't work out in New York.
They brought Bechtin in. Obviously, Bexton didn't end up signing. They signed Trent Brown.
And they were looking at tackle. It's different this time around. But maybe Scott Peters likes
Jedrick and thinks Jedrick can be a good player and if so if he still believes in him
that could be a path they go down even if it isn't right away in an instant pivot on
Wednesday so yeah I think uh I think that's all of the Jedrick wills run we'll we'll talk about
for now but you never know it might come up again I'll just conclude by saying I'm fine with
Jedrick wills if he's coming in to compete as the sixth guy if the expectation is that he can
have the clear path to a starting job.
I'm less in there.
I just keep coming back to,
I want somebody more proven, more reliable,
especially in guard.
I mean, you're talking about a position change there, right?
So I would just want more proven pass protector
for Joe Burrow in this offense.
I get that.
I get that.
I get that.
I get that.
Let's talk about T. Higgins.
The market for edge rushers,
we'll start with Trey has almost entirely dried up.
There's still some guys out there that could be complimentary players.
But at this point, and I've said this on Twitter,
I've said this, I think, on our subtext that our insiders have gotten.
I don't know how you don't go back to the table with Trey at this point,
the way things have gone.
You're well into wave two, three of free agency at this point.
Your pass rush is already looking.
suspect. Honestly, even with Trey, you would like them to add pieces to the pass rush.
What are your thoughts here, James? We haven't really heard anything significant in a couple
of days. We were hoping that if they were going to do a trade, it would have come together
more quickly than this. Where are you at on Trey Hendrickson at this point?
I really, it's one of those things that's so frustrating because I think it's a very simple
solution. And I was talking to NFL people because we give strong opinions and we do this every
single day. And sometimes I'm like, you know what, let me just ask and see if I'm way off here.
And these people aren't tied with with Trey or the Bengals. I don't want to dog in the fight here.
And they're like, yeah, you're right. And what, what did I say that I want to? Would you pay Trey?
How valuable is having a star?
Would you want to piece out that money elsewhere or have a, and it's a no-brainer?
And that's kind of been the case, really, since the Combine.
I've talked to multiple people about it, just because that's the one.
You could say, oh, well, he's 30 and not great against the run.
And you could start to pick things apart.
And guess what?
The Jimmy's and Joe's that you're bringing in to replace Trey Hendrickson are probably not going to be Trey Hendrickson.
inadequate to what Trey Hendrickson's giving you in a win now season.
And so now when the top pass rushers are gone,
and we're literally talking about Kala Von Chason is being one of the potential top guys,
most interesting guys available, which, by the way, I would be on board with.
Spoiler.
But get trade up.
It's very, very simple.
And these things, they don't have to be as complicated.
is it feels. And that's what I, I don't know why it's that way because they're really not
that complicated. We see deals all the time and veterans earn bigger contracts. I mean,
Sequin Barclay. It was just very quiet. There wasn't loud grumblings and the Eagles just did that
and got Seacuan Barclay paid more money, 20 plus million per, all these things. That's what
the Bengals should do here with Trey Hendrickson and get him to 30 million per, 32 million per,
and get it done because he makes them better.
And I really don't see the scenario
where they're fielding a championship level defense,
not better than last year.
That's not the bar.
A championship level defense without Trey Hendrickson
on one side rushing the passer.
Requires him to get very lucky.
With development, with draft picks,
with whatever.
It requires, for my perspective,
sitting here on March 11th,
just before the clock turns,
turns over on the East Coast of March 12th, it would require a great deal of luck for them to improve
compared to 2024 on defense without Trey. And the run defense might be better, but right now the
pass rush is already a concern. And like I said, that's even with Trey because they don't have
that do-it-all defensive tackle right now. Again, we'll see what happens with development there,
right? But they need more dynamism at defensive tackle. They need a guy who can do it all there.
We'll talk about this in just a second when we talk about the other priorities for the Bengals.
like what about a Dennis Gardak?
You keep,
Trey, you go get Dennis Gardeck to add into your rotation as a designated pass rusher.
Sure.
And you don't care that he's turning 31 this year,
been a highly productive pass rush when you can get him on the field in those situations.
And you have guys for your third down and long situations
or clear passing situations and two minute drills.
But that starts with keeping Trey.
And so I don't see how you don't strongly consider,
if not just decide to get back to the table with Trey.
at this point if you're the Bengals.
And it would be pretty disappointing to me if they don't because it doesn't sound like
they're getting that first round pick, right?
I think if that was the case, you would have seen it happening more quickly than it has.
And even if they did, again, you're then relying on hitting in the drafts and a bit of luck
in development.
And I think that's a hard path to choose if you're the Cincinnati Bengals trying to get back
to the championship contention right away in 2025.
All right.
we covered one T name with Trey.
What about T, T?
We'll get to that and other priorities coming up next.

com.
People are asking pretty nonstop.
Anything on tea?
And we've got a deadline of sorts, not an official deadline.
They haven't until July 15th, technically speaking, to get a lot of time.
long-term deal done with T. Higgins.
But by the time the new league year starts on Wednesday, all teams must be cap-compliant.
And boy, would it be nice.
The Bengals are currently cap-compliant, but boy, would it be nice, assuming they don't
do something weird with the structure for T. Higgins contract to have that cap-hit reduced.
And the way you do that is by getting an extension done.
What are the chances, James, by the time the new league year comes around?
Feels pretty low.
Yeah.
You know, I thought it was like 50-50 yesterday.
Just because of that, like they'd have that urgency to do it.
And here's why it sucks.
Because we know that the Bengals have a line that they don't want to cross.
They are always going to have a nest egg of cap.
Like when you go to over the cap, you're never going to see, oh, my God, the Bengals are really pushing.
Like they're within a million dollars of their, like, that's just that's not where they're going to be at.
and okay, fine, I accept that.
I'm not debating that.
That's their philosophy and strategy.
Fine.
But the last thing I want is T. Higgins to have this $26 million cap hit from now until June.
That sucks.
I would much rather it be done, even though they've accounted for that $26 million already.
And get that down to $18 right now.
Because that $8 million, or let's say it's let's go $10.
that $10 million cap it if they wanted to
could get them both guards pretty easily
from a cap standpoint.
And that's what sucks.
And I don't know exactly what the numbers would look like,
but it could.
Who knows what guards they end up with, right?
But knowing that,
knowing what we're going to talk about here
when it comes to the pass rush,
knowing the theme of the offseason for me
is more going to want more pass rush,
more protection, more guards, more defensive tackles. Yeah, I wish that this T thing would be done.
And I, maybe it's complicated, more complicated than I realize. But I don't think it is.
I really don't. I think all of these are pretty simple, cut and dry. And here we are. None of them are done.
And it doesn't sound like they're terribly far off either, at least T and Jammar, listening to Ian Rappaport on Monday, talking to Pat McAfee,
about these deals.
It's not like there's massive gaps necessarily at this point,
at least if Rappaport is correct.
But I agree with you.
It's very frustrating that there just hasn't been the urgency to get those across the finish line.
And when you look at the structures of Bengals have done on some of these deals so far,
the cap hits are coming in higher than I expected them to on pretty much every deal that
they've done so far.
Now, there's a chance that some of these roster bonuses that we're seeing,
for example, for T.J. Slayton are in fact going to be treated as signing bonuses from
a cap perspective, and without getting too nerdy about it, that will just lower the cap hit this year
significantly for a guy like T.J. Slayton. And we'll have to see what the BJ Hill deal looks like,
because that's the biggest deal that the Bengals have done so far. But for now, with some of these deals,
and they're smaller deals, so it's not necessarily a huge issue, especially if they go with
more aggressive from a cap perspective structures that push cap hits out into the future on the bigger
contracts they sign, it'll offset. It won't matter at all. And this,
criticism will evaporate immediately. It's just a point of worry right now, let's say,
that they're really pushing extra cap dollars into 2025. And if that's the case,
if it turns out that that's what they're in fact doing, then it really makes you wonder how
they're going to execute on Duke's plan to not just pay more money for the same roster.
Because that's what he said at the combat. And right now they are not a better team.
they have a way to go to get there.
And that's where we're going to finish the show, James, with can they get there in free agency?
Can they do enough in free agency to actually be better than 2025?
I think they can in some spots.
But I think it's going to take the draft, too.
They're going to have to hit in this draft.
But let's talk about where they can get better by continuing to adjust priorities in this free agency class.
Well, yeah, they can because they can have a better pass rush by understanding that the draft is to supplement what you do now.
and they need to do more now.
They just do.
They need to do more.
Two guards.
Katie, Troy, Elizabeth, Duke, whoever the hell.
Two guards.
Cody doesn't count.
Cody is a backup.
I know apparently I haven't read Jeff Hobson.
Apparently it was like, yeah, I know I'm going to get a shot.
Like, no, Cody, you're not going to get a shot.
You're going to get a shot at helping when this team needs you.
Like, because what they're going to do is they're going to sign a guard.
And then they'll draft a guard in the mid-rounds,
and then that guard will compete with Cordell Wilson and Cody Ford.
And no, that's not what I want.
I want two starters.
I want five linemen where there's no clear, obvious weakness.
These guys don't have to be perfect, right?
Not perfect.
But if you have Tevin and Kevin and Ted and Orlando and Amarius,
you feel pretty darn good, especially if it's Cody Ford and a rookie and Matt Lee
and insert whoever else you want, you probably have a tackle in there as well.
That would be my plan for the offensive line, so I want more.
But the defensive tackle room is very similar because they need more here.
And you can't go into the draft saying, oh, man, we're going to pick 17 on Walter Nolan.
It can't be that simple because if you do that, you're going to get burned.
I've seen this movie, this Bengals movie too many times.
Just don't back yourself into a corner.
What if the best player at 17 isn't a defensive tackle that can rush the past
of the way you want?
What if it's a safety?
What if it's insert whatever?
What if it's a corner?
And so do enough to where you don't have to force that.
One, two, can you imagine the Bengals saying we have too many good defensive tackles?
It's the dumbest thing I've ever heard.
Like they need to sign a pass rusher on the inside.
They just do.
And I do think that there are people in the building.
I do know, actually.
There are people in the building that feel the same way.
So here's to hoping that those people get their way.
And they sign a three tech because they need a three tech.
And the last time the Bengals made it all the way to the Super Bowl,
they had a real three tech.
And Larry Ogon Jobi mattered in that Oakland Raiders playoff win at Paycor.
To be clear, Larry Ogonjobie would not be my first.
choice and I also reflect.
I mean 2021, Larry.
Yeah.
I mean 2021 Larry, to be clear.
Like they need a three tech like that, not current modern day Larry Ogunjobie.
And Levi-Ozareke is still out there.
And that's a guy that can do more for you than just pass rush.
Yeah.
Because that's my concern at this point with the signings they've got on the defensive
interior and the two rookies that are going into their second year is that they're going
to say, all right.
This is the run defense defensive tackle grouping we have on the field.
I hope they don't throw.
And all right, this is the pass rushing defensive tackle unit we have on the field.
I hope they don't run.
And that's something that Justice Mosquado pointed out was a problem for the Green Bay Packers.
And they employed T.J. Slaten, of course, when he was on the field, the splits for run defense were great.
The splits for past defense weren't so great.
So not only do they need a pass rusher here, but it would be great to have a do-it-all guy
so that you're not going one-dimensional too much with your personnel packages and giving up too much in one direction or the other.
And that is a challenge, I think, at this point in free agency, maybe before free agency even started, quite frankly, on the interior of the defensive line.
But especially when you look at the edge situation, got to be able to do both to some degree.
You can't just be nothing one way or the other based on your personnel.
And Malik Collins is that.
He's a past rusher and he's not the run stopper.
But it's a name that I would mention.
But yeah, they, maybe they find that guy in the draft.
I just can see it now, right?
They don't add another defensive tackle.
Like from a pushing the 53-man roster standpoint.
And then they draft one.
And then one injury and suddenly it feels much different.
And that's what I hate.
It's like address this now.
Go get one now.
And we'll see if they do.
I'm with you.
I'm with you, by the way.
Levi.
Levi, Kevin and Tevin.
The triplets, baby.
That's what they call them.
Sure.
Why not?
I mean, I don't know if they do.
Oh, we do.
They do as in we do.
If they get all three, we're calling them the triplets.
We'll, yeah, we'll get shirts made.
Kevin, Tevin, and Levi.
shirts done
Locked on Bengals after dark
Trench monsters
Can you imagine if they did that?
Like you know damn well they're not going to do that
But could you imagine
It would be great for them to start making moves
That could help us to think
That at this point in free agency
They've made moves on paper
That have them on track to being a better team in 2025
It's always been the goal
And they have to get there
Not there yet.
Until next time, that's going to do it
this episode of the Lockdown Bengals podcast.
Thanks for listening.
Ho day.
And have a good one.
