It wasn't Joe Burrow touring Radio Row on Wednesday and said Jamar Chase and T. Higgins would like the Bengals to make waves this offseason.
Let's get into it.
You are locked on Bengals, your daily Cincinnati Bengals podcast.
Part of the Locked on Podcast Network, your team every day.
What on Bengals fans?
Welcome to another episode of the Lockdown Bengals podcast.
Part of the Lockdown Podcast Network, your team every day, the number one sports podcast.
Network in the land. He's J. J. Zrapin. I'm Jake Liskow. We are your host of Lockdown Bengals,
bringing you daily Cincinnati Bengals coverage since 2016. All the analysis, all the news
about the Cincinnati Bengals that you will ever need all in one spot. And we've been doing it
for so long that you know it's a reliable place to get everything you need. Welcome back to
the everydayers. Welcome back to all of you who make Lockdown Bengals your first listen. Today's
episode where we will dive into the clear wants expressed by T. Higgins and Jamar Chase,
sounds like to the Bengals organization and to the media at Super Bowl Radio Row that
Satcho Burrow talking about needs this time.
This time it's the Bengals star wide receivers talking about what they'd like to see the Bengals
do this offseason.
In an episode, brought to you by Fandle, it's the last call for football on Fandul.
If you're a new customer, just bet $5 and get $200 in bonus bets if you win.
And James, this week, we've been waiting to see if Joe Burrow is going to pop up at any Radio Row interviews.
Talked about that.
Talked about keeping an eye on whether Joe was going to show up.
And he has it as of the time of recording.
That could change.
You're going to jinx it.
You're going to jinx it.
What we have seen was a day of Jamar Chase and T. Higgins working their way through Radio Row.
and answering a bunch of the same questions from a bunch of different people
as they went through probably eight to 15 different interviews.
Jamar Chase was live streaming the whole thing,
which I think is pretty entertaining.
He's got a cameraman following him around in San Francisco.
I thought that was pretty entertaining.
You get a little bit of the behind the scenes with Jamar's stream.
But the headline is that these guys are thinking big fish.
And some of that might be because of the way
the questions are being asked.
I think one of the times they were asked,
like what pro bowler would you want to add to your team?
But pretty consistently,
what do you guys have to do to get back to the championship?
You got that taste in your mouth.
What do you have to do to get back to playing in the game this week
instead of being on radio?
Starts with the defense or, in some cases,
specific big fish that T. and Jemar have in much.
Yeah, guess what?
T. Higgins and Jemar Chase agree with you.
Yeah, you watching or listening.
They agree with you.
They want you to call this shot and they want the Bengals to listen.
And I think it's smart.
One, because if you think about this defense,
they need a face of the defense type player.
And so naturally, that's what you're going to do is you're going to go big fish hunting.
And they should go big fish hunting.
And that's what win now teams should do.
It doesn't mean that it's going to happen.
I think we'll get into realistic scenarios of like what it would,
cost and all of those things coming up.
But as far as Max Crosby is concerned, well, he is going to be available this
offseason.
Jay Glazer reported that.
That part of it is pretty true.
So why wouldn't the Bengals be like, yeah, we're interested in him.
Why wouldn't you be interested if you're Jamar Chase?
Why wouldn't you be interested if you're T. Higgins?
What I think is tough here is when your stars go out and they say this.
it, if you're the Bengals, it sets another expectation, another level in a good way,
by the way, when I mean tough.
Expectations are high.
And they're not just high on Locked on Bengals.
They're not just high on my other platform, Cincinnati Bengals Talk or Bengals Talk.
They're not just high there.
Like it's not just me saying it or you saying it or the other podcast that you listen to
or watch or consume.
It's not that.
It's everybody.
Everybody's looking at that front office.
and we usually talk about Joe and what Joe's thinking.
Jamar Chase and T. Higgins are telling you what they're thinking.
They know that saying those names puts the standard at a really,
really high mark and a high level.
And they don't really give a damn about the first 50 plus years in history of this franchise.
They're talking about in 2026 should the Bengals make a splash.
They want them to, whether or not they will, we'll get into.
But I like that these star wide receivers that the Bengals,
that the Bengals made the right decision about, invested in long term,
are saying, hey, go get one of these dudes,
especially one that we know is likely going to be available this off season.
I think one of the things that I like about this,
and this is really small, is that these two guys, and Chase Brown,
I guess you can say he slipped, right?
And he let his feelings be known in the locker room.
Got a little slap on the wrist from Zach.
finish game finish it yeah and that applies to the offense too by the way like it's not like
it's just a defense over the last two years it hasn't finished games what is largely the defense right
the defense has been statistically not where it needs to be for a team to consistently be winning
games and we've seen that be the result they're losing games with they score 40 points or losing games
to the score 35 point like shouldn't be happening maybe once in the last two seasons instead of the
five times or six times or whatever the number is,
whatever their record is in games
they score 31 plus or 32 plus or
all those stats you've heard
over the last couple of years that are just like
an inexcusable level of defense.
But Jamar and T,
that frustration was largely held in.
There were some hints of it,
but nothing like the finish the effing game
from Chase Brown at the locker room, no outbursts, right?
So they,
They, as true professionals, kept going out there doing their job.
T. Higgins comes back from a concussion to finish the season and try to finish the season strong,
eventually gets to the Pro Bowl, right, and talked about how much he enjoyed being out there.
It was his first one.
It means a lot to him.
That was something else, another small thing.
It still means a lot to T anyway that he got to go out to the Pro Bowl this year and got to go out and participate in his first one.
But this is the first year hearing of it.
in the off season.
And I think the first interview they did was Pat McAfee.
And they did a bunch.
But the first one, Jumar is asked about the stuff.
He's like, oh, man, I'm not going to say too much.
You know, I already told Zach what I think we need.
Zach knows.
Yes.
And then as a day went on, you get asked the same question over and over.
Like they start talking about a little bit.
But like even, you know, on the show with Chad and Shannon Sharp,
the nightcap show.
Jamar started with like defense with championships.
Yeah.
And that's,
that's all he said.
It's like,
you know,
we're just not,
we're just not there as a championship level.
Now,
the specific names did come up later,
but it's not like these guys are going out there
being like,
man,
this defense stunk,
they let us down,
blah,
blah,
like,
no,
they're just talking about adding.
And I think it's a small thing,
but like you said,
they're on the same page as everyone.
It's glaringly obvious to everyone in that building,
everyone that follows this team.
They need to get better on that side of the ball.
And then the question is, how do they do it?
Are they involved with any of these big fish?
What is their approach to free agency in the draft?
Those are the questions that we'll be answering over the next couple of months.
And should, should they?
And I think that's an important element because there are going to be a lot of people
that say that Bengals will never trade for Max Crosby.
I've been a fan for so many years.
I mean, we get that all the time.
And it comes with the territory.
And by the way,
thanks for watching.
Thanks for consuming.
Thanks for being a fan
and love and locked on Bengals.
But part of our job is to tell you whether or not they should.
Not will they?
Not would they.
Should they?
And what it would look like if they did.
And so that's what we need to discuss because guess what?
I'll spoil it.
Of course they should be in on Max Crosby.
We'll continue the discussion coming up next.
Come on, man.
Spoiling things like that.
Let's go.
Today's show is brought to you by Zock Doc.

Terms the conditions apply if you're hiring, do it the right way with Indeed.
All right, Jake, I spoiled it.
Of course they should be in on Max Crosby.
Why wouldn't you be in on Max Crosby?
The two names that T and Jemar mentioned,
Max Crosby and Jeffrey Simmons,
I think there's one on the surface,
why wouldn't you trade for both of them?
Right?
Like, of course,
you would love the generational defensive tackle
that's been awesome
and almost carried Ryan Tannahill past you
and looking back,
that's kind of how it was in the divisional round
when Joe Bro was sacked seven times
and somehow the Bengals escaped with the win four years ago.
Jeffrey Simmons is a big part of that.
And I know the Bengals fear him.
I also know the Bengals fear Max Crosby and think really, really highly of Max Crosby and
love how he plays and loves the nastiness he plays with and all of those things.
Like if either guy becomes available and it does sound like Max Crosby is going to become
available, you're a win now team that has a generational quarterback and multiple weapons on
the outside and cap space and draft assets and you need to get better on defense.
Just surface level, of course you're interested.
of course you make the call.
So the Bengals absolutely need to make the call on both guys,
but especially Max Crosby,
because I think of the two,
he's going to be the one that's available.
Yeah,
I think when you hear some names,
Jeff Simmons is really exciting, right?
I mean, T is specifically out there talking about,
I want to sort of the interior defensive line,
because Shannon and Chad,
I think it was Chad,
it was like,
you're Duke Tobin,
you got the GM head on.
Like, what move are you specifically making?
And T's like interior defensive line.
Go get Jeff Simmons.
you know that that kind of thing now just them is availability i am very skeptical of with robert sala
going down there like giving up the the star you defense if you're defensive head coach robert
salla probably not uh although andre parota pointed out james that maybe maybe there's a sweat
available a big sweat available you're making me sweat i'd be in in and so you're talking about
to Vandre Sweat.
The Bengals were 100% in on Tavandre
Sweat in the 2024 NFL draft.
Not where he got picked.
I don't think they would have taken him
in that Chris Jingen's role.
But instead of Jermaine Burton, if he had fallen to 80,
with all those character concerns,
I think they would have taken sweat.
Yeah, that's where they were ready to take the character swing
in the third round.
Max Crossman.
Wrong guy.
God.
He's still just out there.
Germain Bird is just out there still.
He'll probably get a tryout, right?
Like he'll land somewhere for training camp.
Is it now the time to like...
I think a training camp.
I guess you could do a rookie,
you could do like a rookie mini camp and bring him in.
Yeah, probably.
God, third one pick two years ago.
Go ahead.
Max Crosby is somebody you should
absolutely be exploring.
And you should be exploring
can we package tray
and a pick
and a tag and trade
to get Macs.
X Crosby. You are uniquely positioned among NFL teams in that you have control of an asset
at the same position that produces at a similar level that you can explore this tag and trade option
with. Do the Bengals, do you have any confidence in the Bengals in having the agility to do that
sort of thing? I think that's part of the conversation because I've seen some discussion in the last
week and Joe Goodberry, certainly a friend of the show, has said some of this, like,
not even really entertaining the idea of the tag and trade because there's just no faith
that the Bengals will get it done.
And, you know, it's hard to blame people for that mentality sometimes.
However, certainly something you should explore, right?
Like, what's the asking price for Max Crosby?
That's part of the question.
Are they looking for the multiple first round picks that Chicago got, not Chicago,
that Dallas got from Green Bay for Micah Parsons.
Like, is it that kind of?
Are they looking to recoup the same amount of value they got for Khalil Mack?
Calil Mack was a little bit younger when they did that trade.
And I think seen as a more dominant player, but speaking of Chicago, like thinking about that trade,
I don't know what the value would be.
But if you're talking about like, yeah, tag and trade, trade and send a first round pick,
send your 10th overall pick for Max Crosby.
Is that the price?
And if that's the price, which it very well could be,
then I think it's going to give some Bengals fans some pause.
And I think it's going to give the Bengals front office a ton of pause, right?
Like we're, you know, getting out of the should into the will they?
Talking about the Bengals giving up their low price mystery box draft pick
for a very expensive, proven commodity in a position they need.
That's not something that's a very very,
very Bengalsy thing to do.
But what are your thoughts if the price is around there?
I would call the Raiders and I'd say, hey, you can have pick 41, the Bengals second round
pick.
And they're 2027 first in our 2027 first and see what they say.
And that's where I would start.
And then I would say, oh, well, if you're worried about pass rush, we will tag
Trey Hendrickson.
you can have a cost-controlled former runner-up defensive player of the year,
all pro-defenseive end, and work out a deal with him and we'll throw him in.
I would be willing to do that.
So that's what another fourth-round pick possibly that just goes there.
And there's going to be a lot of people that say, oh, well, Max isn't worth a future first,
a second, and tray.
That's fine, but the Bengals aren't paying tray.
It's like a sunk cost.
It's gone.
It's done.
It's over.
and so that would be where I would start is the two this year, the one next year.
And hopefully that just gets it done.
And it might get it done.
Like the 41st overall pick and then a one next year, like that might be their best offer.
He is not Michael Parsons.
This is not Michael Parsons.
It shouldn't be.
It really shouldn't be.
It shouldn't be.
And so, and by the way, if it is, then just don't do it.
Like, that's fine.
Like there is a price that is too high.
There's no doubt.
With Micah,
it's always possible that Dallas just got fleeced.
And like that should have,
and they should have gotten more.
And like that price ends up being the going price for a guy like this.
But Micah is in a different tier than Crosby and was younger.
So that's a factor.
By the way,
I would do two ones.
Like right now,
if you're talking healthy,
Micah,
I would probably do three ones for this Bengals team.
Like,
because who care?
Like in the grand scheme,
but he's hurt and that's not going to happen.
So looking at this, that would be my mindset.
Pick 41 in a 2027 first, see what they say.
And if they're like, we want a little more, be like, well, we'll tag and trade tray to you.
And you can work out of deal with him as well because maybe the Raiders think that they can turn this around pretty fast and do that, which is fine.
It would also be a nice consolation prize if you're the Raiders to say, well, we have Trey Hendrickson, a one and a future one and a two this year.
for Max.
Like you could sell yourself on that
or certainly sell the fan base on that.
Here's where it gets interesting
and you brought up the scenario.
If the Raiders say,
nope, we're not doing all this red tape,
no nothing.
We want the 10th pick for Max Crosby.
Straight up, that's it, cut and dry.
I think it's hard to say no to that.
I've thought about it a decent amount.
I think it's hard to say no to it.
I would give me pause,
but if you're the Bengals,
you would absolutely have to consider
saying yes to it.
and it's because Max Crosby could instantly impact everything you're doing,
everything you're trying to rebuild, everything you're trying to do,
and how many guys in this draft can do it,
how many of those guys will be available at 10?
Like, you're right, it's a mystery box and it's tough.
And so that would be tempting, put it that one.
Got to find out how short Rubin Bain's arms are before I agree to send a 10th pick.
for Max Crosby.
He might not be there, though.
And if they're not that,
that's what I mean.
I'm not how short his arms are.
Because if his arms are short enough,
so maybe he'll be there.
I got you.
Yeah.
All right.
So would you take,
would Jake take Ruben Bain or Max Crosby?
Oh, I'll answer that question.
Next.

James, I would take Ruben Bain in that.
Ooh, Jake talking about the money, worried about the money.
No, I think Ruben Bain's really good.
as part of it.
Like, yeah, there's a mystery box element with all these guys.
Maybe the short arms dooms him in the NFL.
Who knows?
Like, if he's available to the Bengals of 10,
maybe that's because the arms are actually only 28 inches.
That's literally a Tyrannosaurus tracks or something.
You know, who knows?
But from what I've seen from Ruben Bayne,
I think he's going to be really good.
And then, yeah, I am worried about the money after that.
Because if I think the player is going to be really good,
and you can save the contract for the,
the first over or for the bengals first round pick this year is going to be a 30 million dollar
contract over four years right and by the fourth year of that deal that guy's that guy's that
guy's cap hit is 10 million dollars mass crossy cap cap hit if the bengals were to acquire him
this year would be about 30 million dollars and would be a deal that they would have to rework
immediately because after 2026 uh i think there might actually be a rolling guarantee that
kicks in for 2027.
I think I looked into this last time when I thought it was all funny money.
Yeah, it's 2027 salary of 29 million is guaranteed for injury that becomes guaranteed on
the third day of the league year.
So you would have guarantees in 2027, but then after that it's just salary with nothing
keeping them on the bus, just free to cut whenever you want.
So Crosby is going to want his deal redone too, and that's part of it that scares me
off if I'm the Bengals, but when you can save what the entire value of that rookie's pick is
one year of Max Crosby.
And I think that rookie is going to be really good.
Now, if it's a different rookie, which is reality, because Ruben Bay probably doesn't get to them at 10.
Then it changes the conversation.
But if you're going to ask me straight up, would I rather have Ruben Bain at 10 and
Max Crosby than Ruben Bain for me?
Can I tell you what GM James would do?
Bengals, you could call me.
I would get.
I would trade the 10th pick, right?
Today, I would trade the 10th pick because you're right.
Operating in reality, whatever, you're hoping for downs.
You're hoping for this guy or that guy.
In reality, they may take, insert whatever player you really don't want as a Bengals fan.
I think Celtic is the guy right now.
But that's the sentiment, you know.
That would be it, right?
And who knows, right?
Who knows if we feel that way in a couple months?
I don't have an opinion of him today.
I'm full disclosure.
And I've seen stuff on him.
I'm just not going to, you know, plant my flag anywhere.
I'm not even planning my flag on Caleb Downs yet.
And everyone's convinced he's, you know, the next coming.
So that being said, if I'm the Bengals and I'm the one calling the shots and I'm the one writing the checks and I'm the one making the decisions, I would say, you know what would look great?
Max Crosby and T. Cray Hendrickson?
Just dominating, dominating opposing offenses with DJ Reader and T.J. Hill in the middle.
that's what would look great.
So how do I get that?
How do I do that?
Well, first, I got to make sure I can obtain Max Crosby services.
And so if it's the 10th pick, it's the 10th pick.
I would prefer it to not be the 10th pick.
But let's say it's the 10th pick.
Then I would make it clear to T, like, hey, you know,
you guys can be Jamar and T on defense.
You guys can do that.
And so, yeah, maybe you do rework Max's deal.
And that bridge that was burnt,
I, if it were me, I would make sure that that bridge was rebuilt.
And I would have Trey on one side and Max on the other because I think there are a lot of people that are going to hear us talking about Max and like, well, why wouldn't you just pay Trey?
Well, Max is more complete than Trey.
Trey's sacks look great and you're going to look at the sacks and he wins past rushwise.
Guess what?
Great.
Imagine that tandem.
And so that would be my defensive front.
And after I get that done, I wouldn't, I don't think it would be hard to call DJ Reader and say, hey.
you want to clog up the middle here with T.J. Slayton and B.J. Hill, Chris Jenkins Jr.
I think he would say, yeah, I want to clog up the middle so we can get to second, third, and long, and overwhelmed with our two defensive ends.
So there we go. I just fixed it. Spend a lot of money and get it done. And by the way, Max and Trey, you are going to have to take some defensive end friendly deals.
But just structured a certain way. I think you could get it done. There you go. I just solved it, Jake. Let's go.
Yeah. It might be as much of a fantasy as the person in my social media mentions, it's like, man, they should just go get both.
Go get Max and Jeff Simmons.
It shouldn't be that big of a fantasy, though. Like, Trey's on the roster.
Yeah.
So like, just call, Bengals, just call me. I'll make it happen.
Honestly, I'll make it happen. Just now, if the Raiders want three ways for Max, then there you go.
The fantasy goes out the door.
It's also, yeah, you can make it happen.
But yeah, at that point, the reason is such a big fantasy is obviously that you're asking
the Bengals to do so.
And when we get to like the realism of all this stuff, I don't think any of this stuff is
realistic, to be honest.
And I think people out there that are listening to us talk about it, like there's a lot of
people that feel the same way.
Should it be that way?
Probably not.
But you know what?
Maybe they surprise us.
But when you talk about all the money required for those two guys and all of the cap
finageling this front office would have to do to make it work to try to, you know,
your, your, your, your, your, your, Max, Rosby or Max Brosby.
Well, just focus on Max now.
I'm just saying what I would do with the tray and Max.
We know Trey is not coming back.
There's no real scenario.
I'm just saying that for the Bengals to get anything done with any of these high price
free agents, like you're talking about, all right, are they going to restructure Joe
and spend a little bit more cash this year?
And that's, again, probably a more detailed conversation for another day.
the Bengals can create like $18 million or $15 million a cap space,
if the cap ever becomes their constraining factor just by converting some of Joe Burroughs
money to a signing bonus, which doesn't change any cash expense or anything like that,
just purely accounting, which is what the salary cap is, just an accounting tool.
And we'll see if they do any of that this offseason.
It's on the wish list, right?
We talked about the wish list and spending a little bit more.
more cash this year might be necessary.
We'll see if they go that route because there have been years where they've been,
you know, in the top half of the NFL in spending since Joe Burrow arrived.
This is a year to do that because you're so deficient on one side of the ball that it might
require a little bit of a cash infusion to get things moving in the right direction there.
And that's going to come in the way of like potentially bigger signing bonuses, right?
for certain veterans on the defensive side of the ball
to entice them to come and play
and fix your defense. And so
that's what's the head of the Bengals this off season is
it all comes back to the same things in the end
is like are they willing to pull some of these levers
for team building to acquire the talent they need on defense?
Yeah. I mean, and that's, it's going to be painful.
Like paying Adafi OA, what?
Let's go four for 88.
Like, let's just say that, right?
Like, you're going to be like,
well, does that fix it?
Like, oh, does acquiring 29-year-old Max Crosby fix it?
Does, like, any way you do it, it's going to be that way.
I think the Max one, the reason that they should be in is, one, I know the coaching staff
loves Max, loves the way he plays, loves a lot about him.
I assume the front office does too.
I know Joe Burrow does as well as praised him a ton and has a lot of respect for him.
So there's it, like just his game overall, like game recognized game type of thing.
But he's available.
Like, he's going to be available.
And if you're trying to fix a side of the mall,
you're going to watch Baltimore go trade farm or something like that, right?
And like, how does that feel?
How does that land?
Also, that's another reason why you tag, Trey.
So you can kind of control where he goes.
Yeah.
Just so you know.
Dude, can you imagine?
Yeah.
And Trey Hendricks and Sacks Joe Burrow and the Baltimore Ravens are going to win this game
on Thanksgiving in Baltimore for a third time in four years.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Yeah.
I like this.
I like Jamar and T, baby.
Let's go.
There's more here.
We haven't even hit on all of it.
We've done a lot of it.
But I think this will be something we discuss at least a little bit more at some point this off-season.
Turns out Jamar and T are also part of the Trenchman club.
That's going to do it for this episode of the Locked-on Bengals podcast.
Until next time, thanks for listening.
Ho-Day and have a good one.
