It was a hot and intense practice for the Cincinnati Bengals on Thursday.
Let's break down the biggest notes and takeaways as the Bengals ramped up intensity.
You are locked on Bengals, your daily Cincinnati Bengals podcast.
Part of the Locked On Podcast Network, your team every day.
What up Bengals fans and welcome to another episode of the Lockdown Bengals podcast.
I'm your host, Jake Liscoe.
He's your host, James.
We're together in person for one of our few shows a year where we get to do this and I get to try to keep my focus.
You're making him lose his focus.
Well, James tries to distract me and I think I'm doing all right.
So far so good.
So far so good.
We're part of the lockdown podcast network here on lockdown Bengals covering your team every day.
We're on YouTube.
We're everywhere you get your podcast.
Shout out to all the everydayers out there.
Shout out to everyone who makes us their first listen.
I met a few of you out there today.
Thanks for saying hello.
and thanks for making us part of your regular schedule.
If you're new to the show, of course you can subscribe,
and that means you will not miss an update like this one
because you'll be subscribed.
And that makes it really easy.
James, today we have a very intense practice to get into.
Zach Taylor sat up here very close to where we're sitting right now,
and before practice told us that when the pads are on,
they get through that first one, they get the day off,
and today was planned to be a more intense day.
it just so happened to also be on a sweltering day with some pretty wild humidity.
I got to say, I'm not used to the Cincinnati humidity.
Jake Liscoe brought the most intense practice of camp so far.
Joe Burrough said that was fair.
I talked to multiple guys in the locker room that agreed with me, and it was competitive,
ultra competitive.
We'll get into different plays and things like that.
But to Jake's point about the heat, the heat impacted everyone.
I mean, there were multiple guys.
Josh Newton cramped up.
Multiple other guys as well.
I'm trying to think of outside of Amarius Mims, who we're going to get to in a second.
But the heat was clearly a factor.
Amarius Mims didn't tell reporters it was about the heat, but he left practice early, left on a cart.
I know there was a scare there, but it was the heat.
He plans on being back out there tomorrow, more of a precautionary thing than anything,
talk to reporters afterwards.
So really good news there.
and I got to be honest, it was so hot.
And I'm at every camp practice.
So it's not like I'm exaggerating it here just to feed into it.
I know when it's hot at Bengals training camp,
but it was like, all right,
at the end of the team drills, Jake,
when Burroughs out there and rolling out and rolling out
and throwing on the run to T. Higgins,
I'm like, all right, let's just get the hell out of here healthy.
Like, let's just do that.
And unfortunately, that didn't happen because Cam Sample,
appeared to suffer a pretty significant injury, we'll see, but was carted off at the end of practice.
And literally it was at the end. It was after the final 11 on 11. It was when they were working on some special team stuff.
And the offense was out there to get into field goal range. And Kim sample left on a cart. So we'll see about his status.
Zach Taylor didn't talk after practice. It did look serious, though. So we'll see about that one.
But yeah, injuries were on my mind for a lot of camp today.
Yeah, and unfortunately there was the one for Cam Sample.
It was like the last play of 11 on 11, where he went down trying to rush on the left end,
was reaching for the lower leg, was in the locker room on a little scooter type device,
the knee on the scooter.
So something lower than the knee is what it would appear to be based on the way he was getting around,
but we don't know any specifics at this point.
Don't want to speculate further than that.
Hopefully it's not as bad as it appeared, but he was down for some time before leaving
on a cart. And that is a bit of a down note to end the practice. Outside of that, the other things
that looked scary and it felt like a lot was going on because men's left practice. And then I walked
back and, you know, you had just finished writing about it and came to talk to you. Oh,
Burton left practice. Yeah. And it was it was back to back. Burton also reportedly is nothing
severe. He walked off under his own power, was not carted off. He had his left shoe untied as he
locked off the field because they had taken that shoe off to examine something with his foot or
ankle. But it doesn't sound like there's anything too significant there. Going back to CanSample,
though, that leaves them very thin on the edge. And both in terms of getting through training
camp and these hot practices where they only have so many bodies because Trey Hendrickson and Sam
Hubbard continued to not practice, Zach Taylor, again gave the update there that they're,
at least Sam Hubbard week to week. And, uh, Tray to two, but both guys week to week. I,
also think both guys could play soon if needed.
Yeah.
And this is a, we know what they're going to be when they get out there.
Let's get them ready for the opening.
That's kind of what Zach had to say about it as if this wasn't training camp, it was a
different time of year.
It would have been different for Trey.
The timeline, the week to week timeline would be different for Trey and for Sam.
The only other one was Mike Hilton got hit below the belt at some point.
He came back to practice and was fine.
there was a got to protect the McNuggets reference yelled across the field that was fun for me to
observe longest yard baby uh but was it was a pretty intense day a lot going on out there and and the heat
was i mean jay morrison posted a picture the the thermometer on on paycord 96 and like 60% plus
humidity yeah and that's the that's 96 is 96 i 96 is no problem but when the humidity is really high too
it makes for an intense practice.
And we're going to get into some specific plays.
Just to mention, like, when Cam went down,
it was after the main competitive element was pretty much had passed.
Like, there were 11.
It was 11 on 11.
But they were running like one more play,
and then it was going to be special teams.
And it wasn't like they were going all the way downfield,
and it was one final drive.
It was like the last play.
So it just sucked.
So you hate that on August 1st.
You hate that anytime, but certainly on August 1st.
And you're right with Trey and Sam not practicing right now.
They're pretty thin there.
They got thin up wide receiver too today, where Burton went down.
Also 17.
Undrafted.
I need my roster.
17 undrafted, Cole Burgess.
Cole Burgess left and T was limited.
And so when you have all that, obviously Jamar's not out there.
So wide receiver got thin too.
So Trent and Irwin, Charlie Jones, Andre Yosevash, some of those dudes were getting a lot of work.
Yeah.
And when T did practice, to his credit, I thought he was awesome.
I thought he was one of the players of the practice.
Maybe that's where we go in just a minute.
But to summarize the injuries, I think that's all of the notes there.
If you have.
No.
I think it's time to get into practice observations.
Thoughts on practice.
practice of training camp. We will do that coming up next.

All right.
Let's get into some practice takeaways.
I keep saying how intense the practice was and it was.
And let's start at the end because I do think that that last 11 on 11 period when they're basically playing to 18 offense versus defense.
And it's the first team offense without Amarius Mims.
Obviously, Trent Brown is still out.
You have T. Higgins who was out there for a lot.
out of that session. So you did have him, but no Jamar. And it really felt like Joe Burrow and
in the offense was like, all right, we're going to get down there and we're going to score one
way or another. And they were able to do that despite a Trent and Irwin drop over the middle,
despite a Chase Brown drop. They overcame a penalty on Jackson, Carmen, where he got pulled
a false start penalty. So Cody Ford ended up coming in at right tackle, Joe Burrow and company
inch their way down field. And then Burrow finds Andre Yosef.
for a huge touchdown that just kind of, it felt like a game winner.
It felt like a, all right, we ended practice with a, on a positive note after kind of
struggling at times on offense today.
Yeah, there were, you mentioned a couple of drops, the defense getting their hands to
footballs in the air.
Joe Burrow threw his first interception of practice a little bit earlier in the session in a
seven-on-seven period that of all people, Dejohn Anthony,
jumped a pass intended for Mike Gaseki and Joe Burrow, after practice, talked about how in the 7-on-7 period he's treating it a little bit differently than he wouldn't a game.
He's trying to make some throws and be a little bit more aggressive, so maybe not a throw that he would make in a game, but still you have to credit Anthony going against starting tight end for the Bengals and going against Joe Burrow in that 7-on-7 period.
But they did come back with 11s to finish up practice or as a move-the-ball period where the Bengals offense, first-team offense, got stopped and held to a field goal.
driving a lot of the field, and that ended up in a field goal attempt.
And that included a really nice play for T. Higgins.
I think that's a play that Bengals Social posted, a play where T. Higgins comes down on the
sideline with, I think, Mike Hiltoning coverage.
And T. had a few plays like that throughout the day, a few deep balls, a few really nice
catches for T. Higgins.
And he's looked really good throughout this training camp so far, in my opinion.
And then to finish practice after that, after being held to the field goal,
in that period and to finish off that drive with the touchdown to Yoshi, who ran a route that
Joe Burrow described as a good route for the bigger receivers that Jamar Chase has been running,
going back to LSU specifically drawing that parallel to Jamar Chase in a route that he's run
with Joe Borough quarterback going back to their college days.
I thought that was an interesting highlight from the Bengals quarterback as well.
A great way to finish things after Joe Burrow threw what could have been a touchdown on yards
after the catch of Trent Nervin, had Trent Nervin been able to bring in the pass.
And after Zach Moss had a nice run that perhaps he had the ability to run through some
tackles, they whistle things dead on light, relatively light contact.
They weren't live hitting in this drill, obviously.
But Zach Moss might have had an opportunity to score and drag guys into the end zone as well,
a play or two before that Yoshi touchdown.
So a nice way to finish practice for the offense after the defense had their share of wins early.
For sure.
and the Andre play.
It's the touchdown that kind of capped practice.
That's when I thought practice was going to end.
And then they went to the 11-on-11 special teams drill to keep everyone on their toes.
To me, it was such a huge play and kind of set the tone for the end of the day.
But Andre mentioned this in the locker room afterwards.
The fact that he studies Jamar video-wise,
and that that's what they've done
and they slowly built that up and his confidence
in running routes like that that Jamar
runs all the time,
whether he's got a lineup at Y or Z
like he feels, or X, excuse me,
he feels comfortable there.
And that's,
that's beautiful.
Because honestly, Andre
has continued to make plays.
Like even two days ago when he had a couple drops,
like Erwin today was the one that had the drops.
A couple days ago, Andre had a couple drops.
responded with multiple catches and team drills in 11 on 11 anyways.
He's having a heck of a camp building that trust with Joe Burrow in the fact that he scores
in a key moment in a really intense session.
And it's on a Jamar Chase route with Jamar Chase sideline.
I think that that's noteworthy.
The other note on Jamar that I think is interesting.
And I asked Andre this, how engaged has he been?
Obviously, we know he's holding in.
Obviously, we know he wants a big contract.
And he has no plans on practicing until that happens.
well, I get that.
And I also wonder how his teammates feel about that.
Well, he's locked in.
He's helping on the field.
He's giving young guys pointers.
And when you do that, it's much, much easier, I think, for teammates to be like,
all right, Jamar, go get yours.
Like, if you're being selfish and being loud or mopee or whatever, like that,
and I'm not saying he would be doing that, but that has definitely happened in the history of the NFL.
And he's not doing that.
He's helping these young guys, whether it is at Andre Yolo,
Sivash, Charlie Jones, or even the guys like Col Burgess and undrafted guys like that trying to make the roster.
Yeah, I think that wide receivers and those young wide receivers have largely been the talk of training camp.
There are questions about those guys in each press conference that I've attended, which is two.
But in Zach Taylor's press conference before practice and in Joe Burroughs press are after that many, huh?
Yeah, all two of them.
There were questions about Charlie Jones and Andre Yosevash.
And specifically, I think that there's been a lot of attention.
praise for Yoshi. You've heard it from us and you also have heard it from not only the coaching staff,
but also Joe Burrow, who specifically was very excited about Andre taking that leap,
showing that he's able to perform at a level where it seems like Burrow really trusts him,
regardless of where he's lined up. And so seeing what role eventually ends up being carved out
for Yoshi will be very interesting. I still think that we'll see some of that receiver rotation that
we have discussed throughout this offseason, but it at this point in training camp anyway,
it feels like Andre Yosevosh has done a lot to claim a lot of snaps for himself in his second
year. Yeah, I think he's going to play a ton. And it's so interesting, wide receiver wise,
how it's going to play out because all of these guys make plays and have made plays. Charlie
Jones had a couple of plays today. Again, we'll see on a, on, on, on Remain Burton, how
severe it is. Hopefully it's not because I think he would getting him snaps, having him play in all
three preseason games would be huge for his development, just getting him those reps. Obviously,
Burroughs not going to play in all three of those preseason games. It doesn't matter. You want to
get 81 out there. So hopefully we know more on him tomorrow. Hopefully it's good news. But wide receiver
room, that's certainly a battle. Offensive line-wise, you had your head in that offensive line or your
eyes pointed in the direction of the offensive line for a lot of camp one-on-ones happened
real quick just to close the book on wide receivers charlie jones this was during while jake was
looking at the trenches i was looking at the one-on-ones charlie josephash yeah charlie jones and and
and josevash did really well in one-on-ones charlie beat dax and dj in one-on-one's andre got a ton of
separation as well and then joe under threw uh who was oh it was germain joe
Joe Burrow under through Germain.
And Josh Newton had the ball in his hands and dropped it on a deep ball.
Where Germain had some separation, but Josh Newton was in pretty decent coverage.
And yeah, that's one that I think Joe would went back.
And certainly Josh would went back because it would have been an interception.
And there was one more, oh, to your point about Higgins, Burrough did connect with T on a deep ball.
Did you mention that already?
Well, that was in, was that sevens or elevens?
It was the team.
It was 11th.
It was 11th.
It was early in practice, connected with T.
I think it was the first throw of against Cam.
The first play of 11 on 11.
T.
It just immediately won.
Sacks, Cam Taylor Britt, off the line of scrimmage from the release and just ran by him.
And yeah, easy connection there.
Pitch and catch for Joe Burrow when his receivers went on the line of scrimmage like that.
Speaking of the line of scrimmage, would you see from the big guys?
You saw Marius before he left with the heat issue.
you saw all of these guys for the first time in person this camp.
Yeah, I was watching to see where Matt Lee was in the rotation,
what those rotations looked like.
And the most interesting things to me about the practice today for the trench guys
was when Amarius left,
the first guy in it right tackle was Jackson Carmen.
And then for a solid amount of time,
it was Jackson Carmen working with the ones.
And then he had that false start.
And there's a short leash for false starts in practice.
And immediately it was Cody Ford and at right tackle.
Cody Ford is going to probably be one of the early substitutions at a number of positions.
I think primarily guard when the three tackles are healthy, the two Browns and Amarius Mims.
But if they need a tackle after that, there seems to be a belief that Cody Ford will be the guy that has positional versatility.
It seems like Matt Lee is still working his way up.
the depth chart. What I watched when Frank Pollock was working with the offensive line
early in practice was a lot of work and an extra attention to hand placement and past
protection, both Cordell Vulsin and Matt Lee, getting some extra time with Frank Pollack there.
Cordell at one point got a pointer from Frank Pollock after a rep, and then a couple of reps later,
I heard Frank tell Cordell Bolson, oh, that's so effing good. He was very pleased with the short
the short-term correction there,
the quick turnaround on the correction there from Cordell-Voson.
So I was obviously eager to see Matt Lee and see where he is in terms of the pecking order.
He's still working his way up there as a pure center.
There were some opportunities where Trey Hill was working at Guard
and Matt Lee was working at center with the second team at some point in practice as well.
So they're still working that out, I think they're still trying to find their depth there.
But what Amarius Mim's injury revealed is that there's no other,
real tackle depth on this team.
You got Jackson Carmen and you got Cody Ford and those guys could be in the mix there.
But after those first three guys,
I still think that they prefer Jackson Carmen inside working at Guard,
even though he's gotten plenty of work at tackle and training camp this year.
And Cody Ford's primarily working at Guard as well.
So you have some flexibility there behind the top three tackles on the depth chart.
But ideally those guys are the ones playing tackle for the Bengals all year.
No doubt.
They haven't been three deep in a while anyways.
Yeah.
So three deep is deeper than they've probably been at offensive tackle in quite some time.
Maybe since the Anthony Collins, Andre Smith, Andrew Whitworth days.
That's probably it.
So you're talking over a decade.
Regardless, we have some starters to discuss.
When will they play in the preseason?
We know, and we will discuss that coming up next.
Today's show is brought to you by Fandul.
I love sports.
I love them so much.
I never want them to stop.
And right now, there isn't much going on outside of, wait, the Olympics, outside of Major League Baseball, outside of NFL futures bets.
The point is, is there's never a downtime for Fandle.
And that's why all summer long, Fandle is hooking up all customers with a boost or a bonus daily.
That's right.
There's something for everyone all summer long with Fandle.
Maybe you want to get in on the Olympics because you think LeBron, James, and Steph Curry,
and Team USA is going to handle business and win gold.
Maybe you don't.
Maybe you're going to go against America.
Maybe you think it's going to be one of these other teams that are really,
really talented.
Well, you can wager on that and so much more with Fandall.
So whether it's Cincinnati Reds, whether it's Bengals Futures,
whether it's the Summer Olympics, head over to fandle.com
and start making the most out of your summer.

Zach Taylor disclosed today when we should expect to see Cincinnati Bengals starters this preseason.
I was surprised that we got this memo from the Bengals head coach so early in the practice.
And I was also honestly shocked to hear Zach Taylor say that the plan right now is for the first game.
And when he explained it, it started to make some sense because they have the shorter weeks and the joint practice afterward.
This is when I brag.
Go ahead.
Yeah, James discussed this as a possibility, and I was pretty dismissive because it's so rare.
James, no way.
Well, they play the starters week one of the preseason?
I still think it's weird, especially with all the entries they have.
But they seem to have that plan in place.
Joe Burrow talked about being excited to get a series in,
so it doesn't sound like it will necessarily be extensive work.
We'll see what it obviously turns into a little bit more than a week from today.
But it does sound like that is currently the plan.
It sounds a little tentative, but Zach said that that seems to be the direction he's leaning right now.
Yeah, we're still a while away, eight days away, I believe.
Is it eight?
Yeah, it's next Friday.
It's the first.
The game is on the 10th.
Oh, nine days away.
So we're on nine days away.
So it's next Saturday.
There we go.
You could tell how close I'm paying attention to the schedule right now.
It's really a day-to-day type thing.
That being said, called it.
And I called it.
Because they have joint practices.
And Zach didn't chalk it up to that, but I'll chalk it up to that because I think that's what it is.
You get a ton of great work in these joint practices, controlled work, more reps than you're going to get into a preseason game.
And so this first preseason game, that doesn't mean Joe can't warm up and go through the routine in these other games.
And who knows, maybe they try to play them in a couple of them, maybe week one and week two.
It wouldn't shock me, especially with some of the injuries like Jake pointed out.
But this is the week next week where you don't have a ton of practice time.
It makes sense going into that preseason game to start at home, get Burrow out there,
get him comfortable.
And I asked him about getting hit, by the way, in the preseason.
Hey, Joe, you want to get hit and pop back up?
He's like, well, one, two is a bit strong, which is fair.
But I do think that coming off of any kind of serious injury that is on his radar, on everyone's radar.
and it would be nice to get that one out of the way, as he said.
So it's probably going to happen against Tampa Bay or maybe not.
Maybe Amarius Mims and those guys just keep Joe Burrow upright and no one gets near it.
Yeah.
I mean, obviously that's what we would like to see.
Yeah, absolutely.
That's what I think everyone would like to see.
And T kind of pointed that out.
He was like, man, it's good to have Amarius Mims.
He said with all due respect to everybody else that we've had,
but it's good to have Amarius Mims protecting number nine.
which was nice.
Yeah, there's growing praise for Amarius Mims.
And there's certainly a lot of excitement.
I mean, we've talked about his ceiling a lot.
And I don't know that we need to rehash all of that now,
but the excitement continues to build,
I would say, around Amarius Mims.
And it's going to be exciting to see him go against some other competition,
I think, with the absence of Trey Hendrickson,
with the absence of Sam Hubbard.
The competition has been guys that you need to be good,
if you're the Cincinnati Bengals.
The Bengals will need Joseph Osai,
especially in light of this cam sample potential injury,
and we don't know the severity of yet.
They'll need Joseph Osai and Miles Murphy to step up and be good,
like solid contributing role players on this team
behind Sam Hubbard and Trey Hendrickson,
who have both had their own injury and durability issues.
At times, they don't miss much time,
but they've missed some time in recent years.
And so it would be nice to see Mims get some competition
against some other teams and for this cornerback battle to go against some other teams,
that'll be Tampa, as you mentioned, Mike Evans for these corners if he plays,
but who knows if Tampa is going to play starters because it's weird to play starters
in the first preseason game.
I still think it is.
Even if Zach's answer does make sense and he went on to really highlight the lack of
continuous practice time after the first preseason game where you have shorter weeks and
you have the preseason games mixed in there.
whereas before that first preseason game,
you get like the three consecutive,
four consecutive weeks of practice.
For those watching on YouTube,
I have the I told you so.
Yeah.
I told you so, look to Jake,
I will say this.
Like he wants a pat on the back.
Do it, do it.
I'm sweaty though.
There we go.
It's real hot.
I will say it.
Not in here.
It's just we're still hot.
I'm still hot.
Yeah.
That said,
I still wouldn't play him in the preseason.
Like if Zach was like,
hey man,
what should we do?
I'd be like, enjoy joint practice, Joe.
So I, and I know I almost feel like I'm in the minority there.
I think I really do.
I think because Joe wants to play in the preseason.
Like he is excited for it and he's excited for the opportunity.
I mean, he sat up here and talked about how nice it's been.
You know, the first questions of his pressure today were like, how did you like that heat?
And he's like, yeah, it was good.
Like, I haven't had the opportunity to do that.
So while it might be a suffer fest,
for the fans and for some of the players in attendance,
he's relishing the opportunity to get the practice in and get the work in.
And I think he feels the same about getting a little bit of work in in
in a preseason game as well.
And there's also, I think we've talked about this going back to the very first practice
of camp, a little bit of a different approach through this preseason
from Zach Taylor and this coaching staff and from the team.
And I think a lot of that has to do with getting out to a faster start.
And I don't know that they're like emitting that readily right now,
but it's hard to think that it would be anything but instilling that urgency at the beginning of the season
with this relatively soft open to the season that we've discussed on this show in the past
and getting to that point ready to hit the ground in a faster fashion than they have in recent.
Well, for sure.
You can't keep digging a hole and jumping in it and then saying, all right, we're going to climb out of it.
is stubborn and is resilient and tough as Joe is and this team has been.
And if they start slow, they're going to take that same approach and they'll probably be,
they'll rally back like they did last year and then things kind of fell apart when Joe got hurt.
I get it.
But you don't want to be in that position.
And so that's why I do get the logic of making sure Joe is ready to go, making sure
these other starters are ready to go.
And you're not going to have Jamar.
I'd be shocked if someone.
Not that nothing will get done and we'll talk about what's next for Jamar, probably on our next show, which we may have a little extra stuff coming your way, but we'll certainly be back together on Sunday after practice.
So it will be interesting to watch what starters.
It's easy to say starters.
What starters are going to play?
I don't think Trent Brown is going to play.
So this is a big shot for Amarius Mims in the preseason.
But we got to get there first.
There's still multiple practices.
I'm thinking, what, one, two, three, five before now.
Is it really five?
I'm here for six practices.
I'm leaving before the first preseason game and I've attended one.
And that leaves five doing some quick math there.
There you go.
Five more practices.
Yeah, I guess so.
I guess we have three over the next four days and then two next week.
Yeah.
There you go.
That's five.
Jake, good at math, but still got it wrong when it came to the Bengals plan to play Joe
Burrow preseason game number one.
It's fun doing this in person.
How many episodes do you think you're going to remind me of that?
Seven.
It'll probably last longer than the 18 flights he took to get to Cincinnati.
It'll definitely be a focus, I think, in our preseason game one preview.
I think I'll be hearing it that day, at least a couple times.
That's going to do it for this episode of the Lockdown Bengals podcast.
Always a treat to get to do these in person down here at Paycor Stadium.
I'm glad to be back and excited to watch five more practices in person.
We'll have more observations and takeaways from those practices as the Bengals get ready for that preseason game number one
that will apparently feature Joe Burrow and some Cincinnati Bengals starters.
Until next time, thanks for listening to this episode of the Lockdown Bengals podcast.
Ho day and have a good one.
