Trey Hendrickson made a surprise appears for the Cincinnati Bengals offseason program, but it wasn't to practice.
It was to air it out.

Is this Trey Hendrickson Contract Drama Saga continues and I think will continue for some time?
We're going to start the show there before we dive into some of the other notes from the open practice.
and Trey Hendrickson certainly dominating the conversation with his surprise appearance on Tuesday.
And today's episode is brought to you by Fandul,
where new customers will get $200 in bonus best when your first $5 bet wins
and wanted to take a moment here to shout out all of you who make Lockdown Bengals your first listen.
James, let's dive in to the Trey Hendrickson remarks today.
First off, a surprise that he shows up, that he's at Paycor at all.
he walks out to practice in a polo shirt and some pants, obviously not participating in the practice.
And then decides or the team decides, I think more likely that he's going to talk to the media on the field, on the practice field, which from an observer perspective who wasn't there today was a wild sequence of events.
Yeah, I wasn't expecting to hear from Trey today.
Obviously, we saw his statement yesterday.
I didn't know he was going to be there.
And then I saw him walking out.
And I'd just take a video of Joe Burrow.
And I'm like, all right, well, this is the first practice Joe Burroughs been at for media because of the gala last week, the regatta gala.
Oh, wait, what was it?
Anyways, don't answer.
It was a joke.
So I think it's a friend's reference, by the way.
Not many of our listeners or viewers will get it.
I don't even get it.
Yeah.
A regatta gala.
Anyways.
Trey Hendrickson probably won't get it either.
And Trey Hendrickson doesn't think that the Bengals get it.
And clearly that's why he's here is frustrated and really frustrated.
I think part of it's the narrative element of it, a big part of it, wanted to clear the air, as you said, wanted to make things about as clear as possible.
And we can dissect all of that.
But before we do, yeah, it was a huge surprise that he showed up.
And I think what Trey is doing now is he's searching for answers, trying to get answers.
And whether you watch the video and I posted it on social, it's literally 24 minutes.
And I do think there's a lot of good information there.
But I think he wants to make it clear, whether it came through or not, that, hey, this needs to be solved.
There needs to be urgency.
I don't know why there isn't urgency, but there needs to be urgency.
We need to figure this out one way or another.
And I think that's my main highest level takeaway.
Before we get into quotes and different things that he said,
Trey Hendrickson wants this resolved because he is,
it's not just that he's not happy with this current contract
because you could say that back to back to back years, really.
I think he's at another level here where he's going to
just miss and skip and and be willing to do that he didn't want the the narratives about
first round pick and all of these things uh to be floating out there for months and so
now this chapter may be closed we might not be hearing a lot maybe we will maybe we'll hear
from trey hendricks next week but we might not hear from tre hendricks again uh tray hendricks
again until something is done and i think that's what's interesting now is do the bengals
give a damn, what's their plan?
But I think Trey is really got some urgency here to get something done at some point,
whether it's a trade or a signing.
Looking for communication, right?
And what could that communication be other than a contract offer or openness to negotiations
where from the Bengals perspective, perhaps they feel they've made their last invest.
Maybe not.
Maybe there's room there.
Maybe they can still talk it out.
maybe it's a tactic.
Maybe they want him to feel that urgency and that pressure and feel impatient.
And he said himself that he's trying to work on his patience.
Sorry, you wanted to jump in there, I think.
Yeah, I just don't think they've even said, hey, this is our last and best.
From a communication standpoint.
Like, I'm sure that, you know, they've made them an offer at one point this offseason.
But I don't think that came with, all right, well, this is final offer, take it or leave it type scenario.
Just throwing that out there.
I don't know.
It's certainly possible that they haven't, but perhaps their actions are telling you that it's very likely the last invest.
Maybe not.
Maybe it's not very likely that it's last and best.
Maybe they are waiting and will come back with some other offer.
But to your point, Trey Hendrickson would like this to be done sooner than later.
He is taking it aggressively to the media to try to light a fire under the team, to try to,
inspire action in a way that I don't think there are any other public negotiations in the NFL
that are at this degree of public negotiating at this point where I think that speaks to
Trey's position and what he's trying to get from the team and the team's position, which is
not really engaging with Trey Hendrickson in a meaningful way or a way that feels to the player
to be a meaningful way.
And Trey talked a lot about this.
And I do encourage you, I will take this moment to encourage you to go watch the full video
because I think we're going to talk about it here.
And you're going to see tons of quotes on social media if you're on social media.
And I saw all the quotes on social media as it was happening.
And then I went and watched a video myself personally.
And I came away with different thoughts than I had when I had just read the quotes.
So when you're listening to us talk about it and try.
trying to distill it into the big takeaways for you, you might want to go just check it
out yourself because you might come away with a little bit more context if you hear it
in its completion independently of hearing us talk about it.
And it's on the YouTube channel Cincinnati Bengals talk is the easiest way to do that.
I think that the other element here, and I think we'd go back to like January, January,
Whenever we started to really look at the offseason and bring it in full focus,
did we think this negotiation was going to be pretty?
Like, did anyone think that it would just get done?
Like, I think there are a lot of people that wondered about T and Jammar and how long that would go.
And it got done early enough that it was like, oh, well, surely they'll just get trade done now.
And I just think this was inevitable.
It was inevitable because the Bengals are always late to the kids.
game. It's why Jamar didn't get paid last year, which impacts this year. It's why T,
I don't think they were planning on paying T eight months ago. I'm not sure anyone would admit that,
but I think that's pretty fair. And so they do that. And then it's like, oh, well, yeah,
Trey, we'll revisit it if you produce well, and we can get more into that. But I don't think
there are many scenarios, especially after the defensive end market had shifted this offseason.
And it's gone bananas compared to where it was just a few months ago.
I think from a Bengals perspective, right?
Other teams probably wouldn't flinch at Payne Trey or signing to the contract that he's
looking for from a year's perspective.
But the Bengals clearly are.
And are they willing to get closer?
And I think maybe that's where we go next is how does this end up?
Where does it end up?
Because it's messy now.
And does it get messier before it gets cleaned up and you have Trey Hendrickson on the field?
I wonder.
So we'll dive into more Trey Talk coming up next.
Fandu makes it easy to stay in the game before tip off and live with player props,
performance trends, same game parlay.
Fans have more ways than ever to play smart and win big.
And I got to be honest, I was certainly hoping that Steph Curry and the Warriors
we're going to get it done.
Steph Curry's out.
The Warriors are stinking up the joint,
and that's not going to happen.
Anthony Edwards is a lot of fun, though.
So whether you think that the Minnesota Timberwolves
are going to continue their run
after making it to back-to-back,
I assume back-to-back Western Conference finals,
or maybe you're looking at one of these other teams,
Oklahoma City.
Maybe you think that the Knicks have just captured the Big Apple
and not just the Big Apple,
but the NBA are going to win it all.
Fandle is the place to get in on all of the action
From live betting to player props to same game parles,
you can do those same game parleys live during the game all in one place.
Fandall.com.
And right now is the perfect time to sign up because you can head to fandle.
com, place your first $5 bet, and you'll get $200 in bonus bets if your bet wins.
That's it.
$5.
When you have that winning $5 bet, if it wins, like I said, you get $200 in bonus bets at fandle.com.
Make every moment more with Fandle, official sports betting partner of the NBA.
You're ready to talk about where this ends up.
I want to talk a little bit about how we got here.
One of the interesting things about Trey's comments to me was that we learned a little bit
that we've been speculating about, that we've had some inkling about but weren't exactly
sure what precisely went down.
And we still don't know exactly.
We're getting one perspective here.
We're getting the players perspective here.
But I think Trey was pretty clear on these notes.
And so we have a couple of things to talk about when we talk about how we got here in the second kicking of the hornets nest in two days from Trey Hendrickson that I think was somewhat spontaneous.
But first, there's this comment about it being provoked and it coming about it being the statement to Adam Schefter, the subsequent trip to Cincinnati to meet with local media by a text from Zach Taylor informing and or threatening perhaps Trey Hendrickson with fines if he didn't.
in short for mandatory mini camp.
So there's that bit of it.
There's the promises made that I want to talk about.
And he elaborated on that a little bit.
And there's the difference in the quote unquote short-term offer,
the Bengals have been strongly pushing.
And that's what Trey said, more or less,
versus the long-term deal with guarantees that Trey wants.
And those are three things that I thought were some of the interesting,
notes in addition to the strong statement that trey is saying today he will not play on his current
deal which i think this is the first time he said directly all right yeah i don't think he will
i think that's a very real thing does he have to play at some point you know will he play so his
contract tolls does he just sit completely not let it toll and sit there on the bengal's cap and
and just sit there and just sit there i wonder he doesn't need his contract to toll to get to free agent
Like, his goal is to get paid.
So I think that that element is interesting.
But as far as, man, there's so many layers to it.
But I do think that the Zach stuff is interesting because, one, why does Zach need to be the one?
And I'm sure he was told to do it.
And maybe he felt like he needed to.
You know, we're only getting one side here.
Zach needs to be the one that says, hey, Trey, you're getting fine.
Zach's the coach.
So that's dumb.
That's BS.
I'll call that out right now.
It's just stupid.
Someone in the front office needs to handle that
and be the one to send that text.
I agree.
And so let's start there.
Because it just puts Zach in a really crappy situation.
And he put in plenty of crappy situations with this job and he's paid for it,
which is great.
But like,
you don't need to be the middleman all the time between the front office and the players.
And if that's what they think part of being head coach is,
yeah, at times,
but it was to me you want to lean on him because he has a good relationship with the players
not hey go go discipline this guy and let him know that hey we're fine and i like so i just i think
that that part is is really that's dumb it's a dumb move by the bengals if that's what they did now
maybe zach went on his own and said it and was trying to make a point to his player that's different
but i i figured i'd point that out i i do wonder
though what the strategy would be to tell tray at this point i wonder well not i wonder i also
thought it was interesting because at first i was like why would tray be mad that he's being told he's
going to be fine for a thing that could be a heads up like hey tray just let you know you might get
fine for this or you you know we might end up finding you if you're not here for minicamp is it a
heads up or is it a threat is it that simple tray's elaboration on this point was that it feels
like giving up.
There's,
he's,
I don't know how many days
there are until mandatory
minicamp.
Trey said 20.
He said 25.
He said 30.
He said different amounts of days.
Whatever it is,
it's ahead of time,
right?
And he felt like the,
the assumption that it
wouldn't get done by
mandatory mini camp was disappointing,
was assuming too much.
That was part of what he said,
upset him.
But even still,
do you think that's it?
He also said there was a quote,
unquote,
incident with Zach,
maybe it was just
the fine.
But is that really why he's like changing his plans, flying to Cincinnati early,
showing up a pay court, talking to media, issuing a statement through Schefter?
Or is there more to it?
I wonder.
Well, I think there's more there between him and Zach, clearly.
I don't know what.
He clearly didn't want to go there.
I think that's a takeaway.
He, like, he went, he started to talk about it and he's like, I'm going to dial this back.
Because I followed up.
I tried because I was curious, like why now, what changed? What is it? And it, again, to me,
and maybe it's because they lost Christian Sarkesian and now they have one less scout. I'm joking.
But can't someone else send that text? Can't someone else do that? Oh, by the way, hey, Bengals,
you want me to do it? Great. Million bucks a year. I'll send all those texts. I'll handle it all.
and I need permission to continue to do lockdown bankers.
That's it.
That's pretty cheap, right?
They're penny pinching on Trey Hendricks and the NFL sack leader.
They're going to pay a front office member a million bucks eating.
The best they can do is $5 lunch allowance a day.
That's the best they got.
Hey, that would be a, anyways, I can't.
I'm not going to do that.
But yes, that would actually have some currency inside Paycor.
I do.
So there was that.
What were your other?
I'm forgetting you had certain things you wanted to hit on and I agreed what was your second one I'm trying to remember the second one I remember the third one was the difference between long term and short term and what the I have something one yeah let me let me speculate on that you'll figure out the second one while I'm doing this promise is me was the other one perfect so it'll go right together so speculation on what I think the Bengals are offering versus what Trey wants speculation don't know Mike Brown didn't call me Duke didn't
call me, didn't hear from Trey on this, don't know. All right? On one side, I think that the Bengals are
offering Trey Hendrickson A one year extension. He took one before. Why wouldn't he do it again?
He's already 30. He'll be 31. He's earned a year extension. I bet you the Bengals offer him like a year
for 28. Maybe they get to 28. Maybe it's 26. I don't know. I think it's in the 20s.
Ray is looking at this market, and I'm sure he wants three years.
I don't even think the Bengals got to two.
Again, maybe I'm way wrong.
I think that they're way off.
These two sides are so far off.
And that's where it gets more heated and he's frustrated.
And it's like, what is going on?
Because I think they're at like one year, 27 or 28.
Speculation, not real.
And I'm sure Trey wants three years, 35 million per, 33 million per.
I'll give you a discount based on the market, $32 million per.
And that is the Grand Canyon separates these.
Like, maybe I'm way off.
But if I had to guess, I would say Tray's like three years, $100 million.
They're at like $1 for $28.
And I'm just throwing out numbers.
Please don't quote them or act like I'm reporting.
But I do think that that's probably not that far off.
What's your read?
Well, think about the guys he kept.
mentioning he mentioned miles garrett daniel hunter max crosbie several times and he should shouldn't he
mention those guys and crosbie got 35 and a half garrett got 40 and daniel hunter got 35 and 600 just a little bit
more than 35 and a half i would say max crosbie didn't get anything guaranteed beyond 2026 that is an
entirely cuttable contract after 2027 i would offer that deal to trade today
And Trey would not take it.
There's no way.
Is Trey opening him up to being cut for free in 2027?
Because that's what Max Crosby did.
He might.
I don't think he is.
If he does, great, make that offer because that's free if you're the Bengals.
It's just the same way that earlier in the off season, I said,
there's no cost to giving him that third year.
The debt money is so minimal.
But if they can't even get to the second year,
they get him to the third year would be tough.
I don't think they would offer him the math.
Max Crosby deal today. And I get it. It's a lot of funny money that juiced up the numbers.
I don't think they would. I don't know what they're doing. I mean,
that's literally pay as you go. Those are all team options with zero dead money dollars,
not just low dead money dollars, zero dead money dollars in those extra years for Max Crosby.
Yeah. It's, that's the, the interesting thing about it because again, speculation.
do we really think the Bengals are offering two years?
Like, I don't.
I don't.
Well, right.
That's what I'm saying.
Like, if they're not even getting to two,
then you're talking about a chasm to get to three.
Let's finish this up.
We got to talk about the promises that were made to Trey.
He specifically mentioned last July.
He referenced the explosion of the edge rusher market as well and did not apologize for
his colleagues getting paid.
And we did get one bit of good news.
at this practice as well, Demetrius Knight, making it onto the field.
We'll finish with those notes coming up next.
The promise part of it.
So two things.
One, Trey did say the first round pick element, I just want to get this out of the way before.
And then we'll get to the promise that they never promised the Bengals that they would get a first round pick,
that it was about exploring and the Bengals wanted a first round pick, exploring his value.
And so, yeah, of course, yeah, we'll try to get you a first round pick.
I get that logic.
I do make sense.
It always seemed weird.
Like, oh, yeah, we promise we'll get you a first round pick.
It's not like his agent can go to the Colts and say, hey, will you give up 14 for me?
Like, it just doesn't.
It's really not how it works.
It's like, oh, well, let's work on a deal.
And then you call the Bengals and work on your side of the deal.
So there's that.
The promise part of it, I think is interesting because I, in July, I'm sure the
Bengals looked at it and said, hey, we're going to get Jamar done this year.
T's walking.
Trey, play well, and we'll get you paid.
I think that's probably how they felt.
Like, I think they were really open to it, I'm sure, this time last year.
And then circumstances changed and not just change with T.
And obviously, it didn't get Jamar done.
But then the edge market changes and the Bengals are in one spot and the edge market shifts.
And that's, that puts them in a tough.
position that puts tray in a unique position and so i i get why this is here now i would have
sped the process up and found a result or an answer one way or another if on the bengals much
sooner but yeah the promise thing what did you what did you make of that because that's that's obviously
been a big topic and was for trey as well well well one it what you're just talking about there
underlines this chronic issue of the bengals just waiting too long and then everything costs
and then they find themselves in these spots where they feel pressed for giving the extra money
or they find themselves needing to pay more than they have to pay.
And so like that's an age old problem that we've beat to death.
But I thought it was interesting that as Trey was talking about it, he's saying he's essentially
framing this as like, yeah, the organization could say they've done right by me.
They didn't get specific.
We didn't talk about number of years.
We didn't talk about the amount of money.
We couldn't predict where the edge market was going.
And that's where the quote about not apologizing for the defensive end market prices going up came from.
But I'm of two minds here.
One, like you said, circumstances change.
And at the time they had that conversation, T definitely wasn't in their future plans.
Nobody thought T was in their future plans at that point.
And so if you're talking about paying Hendrickson and Jemar this offseason,
okay that probably to the Bengals at the time seems really reasonable and I'm not excusing them
they still have the money to get this done with Trey in its future years I think they're worried
about more than than this year next year but this idea that it's hard right because teams will
say a lot of things at a lot of times and then things change and
And when conditions change like that, Hendrickson sees it change one way and the Bengals see it another way.
And now you get to this spot now where you have this chasm.
So while there was this conversation last year, how much thought can you put in a conversation last year where so much can change?
And that's something that I think Trey has even alluded to a couple of times here where he's talking about,
I don't want to talk about what I'm going to do in the future because circumstances can change.
Yeah, it's just a complicated situation, I think.
It changes, but honestly, and we're going to have more time to discuss all of it, honestly.
I mean, it's not going to be.
Well, and there's more, like there's so many layers.
Like, we're not going to get to it all.
Like, there's like four different topics in my head right now about Trey or the organization.
But just have a plan and you get the plan moving.
I think that's like if tray was in Buffalo right now or Atlanta or wherever he'd be fine.
Or if he had signed a deal here, he'd be a static and he'd be on the field.
To me it's like, all right, well, if your plan is to play it out and like that's what you're going to make him do, then just tell him that.
Because he has two months to, he has two months to prepare mentally for that.
if your plan was to trade him or you consider trading him, then really consider trading him.
Don't just give him this weird permission thing where a trade really never got close because
asking price was clearly way too high and like it just, it never felt like a trade was even
remotely imminent.
And if you plan to pay him, then just pay him.
And if you're offering a one-year deal, well, that's not realistic either.
I don't think.
And I don't think he will take that.
I probably wouldn't take that.
And so that's what's weird here is it's like,
I don't really care at this point,
but pick a lane.
And obviously the lane that makes them the best in 2025
is having Trey on the team from a cat perspective,
plenty of ways.
They can add to Trey's dollars this year
and add two years onto his deal.
And by the way,
I do think a two-year extension would get it done.
I don't think Trey's going to tell them to pound sand if the money was close and there's one
year less.
Or he would go the other way.
If it's one extra year and the money is less than he wants, well, maybe he's willing to compromise if the guarantees are a little higher.
Like I think he'll blink in one of these areas because he wants to get paid.
I'm not sure he's going to blink in all of the areas and just want to sit there and play out the year.
But by the way, if that's what you want him to do, just tell them.
just tell him now so he can wrap his head around it.
And if he throws a fit, he throws a fit.
But I'd rather it happen now than him throwing a fit in August.
Like, which one's better?
I think in May, it's much better.
Well, that's where you have the, this is our last and best.
And if that's not going to do it, the alternative is this.
You can't, you can't sit out the entire year.
But it's, couldn't he set out the entire?
Because he doesn't need his contract at all.
He'll just sit there on their cap.
Just sit there.
Couldn't he?
I mean, I think I have to look into it.
My understanding currently is that if he just doesn't play the season,
the contract year does not count.
And he's still under contract with the Bengals.
Sure.
He likes to sit out.
But then he'd be like, all right, well, I'm an $18 million cap hit next year.
And he just sits there.
But he's not collecting that money either.
So, well, he's rich.
There's a game of chicken there.
Yeah.
it's just like uh why why why is it always this oh yeah i could that's challenging pain in that
like if they had just traded tray did i necessarily agree like is that something i would have said
in january february like no i would have paid tray but i could get it like you could sell me on it
like you could sell me on the vision you better get the draft picks right you better use that money
in free agency you better like you could sell me on it
If you said, all right, well, we just don't really want to pay Trey, then have a different message in these public forums because at least in the public, that hasn't been the case that they've said they want to keep Trey and they want to give him a raise and all of those things.
Does that mean just one year?
Well, that's silly.
You know, we know that's not going to get it done.
So I think that that's where I'm at.
The saga continues.
I think my primary advice of the Bengals would be to be a little bit more forward thinking.
And I've been asking them to do this all offseason.
But like we talked about with the Max Crosby deal, that's free to cut.
If he's not playing, and again, I don't think Trey would take the Max Crosby deal.
But for the Bengals to get to the Max Crosby deal, that involves guaranteeing $30 million next year.
That involves guaranteeing next year's deal.
And the Bengals have such an issue with.
future guarantees, that that's probably a non-starter.
And Max Crosby has 2026 guaranteed and nothing after that.
Literally, I think he would do it.
I think Trey would do that.
If you bumped up his guarantees this year, like bumped up his salary this year,
and then he had guaranteed money, 30 million guaranteed or whatever the Max Crosby deal is in 2020.
And then you could point to it.
It was good for Max Crosby.
Yeah.
Like then if you're the Bengals, then you could be like, all right, well, what do you want me to do,
Trey like what do you want us to do because Max Crosby is younger than you and I think he would I
again I don't know I'm speculating on the years and that I but I think he probably takes that
because it's two years of money that's a lot of money man and if he's still playing well he's
going to get more money and they have this obstacle of guarantees and this obstacle of years
and there are ways to do it and maybe just maybe Trey would just say no
obstacles fake obstacles they're self-imposed i did uh do a little twitter poll on this and got
2,500 answers so far who are you most upset with in the tray hendricksson contract dispute
51% right now say bengal's front office 30% say both hendricksson and the bengals front
office both of them are just doing a terrible job here 11 and a half percent say i'm not
really upset with anybody i understand both sides or i just can't be bothered to care and 8%
land on the player side.
8% think Hendrickson is the fault.
I will say that a lot of people replied
and said it's Hendrickson's agent,
and I don't think you can differentiate those two things.
No, that's a try.
But I don't know how those people voted.
So if you think it was the agent
and you didn't vote because the agent wasn't an option,
I don't know about that.
But out of the 2,500 people,
I think that's a pretty clear split.
You said 2,500?
2,500 votes, yeah.
Yeah, if only we could get a dollar
for all of those 2,500
and then put that towards Trace guaranteed money,
we'd be 2,500.
Oh.
I need a little bit more than 2,500 votes.
Honestly, maybe that, I said, hey, we'll give you an extra $2,500 guarantee.
So we weren't expecting to spend the entire episode here on Trey Hendrickson.
We thought it would be a lot of our conversation.
Do you want to throw in the notes here.
Demetrius Knight is back in practice.
He tweeted that himself in response to the less than reputable account that claimed there were issues with the injury
protection waiver the Bengals have for rookies.
Samar Stewart, however, still sitting out perhaps because this is Kelsey Conway reporting
on this now as well, something to do with the injury protection waiver that the Bengals have.
We still have no clarity on whether the Bengals are actually an outlier in terms of the injury
protection offered to rookies before they've signed their rookie deals.
And until we have that clarity, it's hard for me to come down hard one way or another
here.
This could just be the agent being a little bit weird about one word.
in the waiver that is weird language to him where no one else seems to have a problem with it.
It's the first time it's happened.
It's only going on for one player.
So I don't think that we know the full story there,
but Shamar Stewart continuing to not practice on Tuesday.
Yeah.
I think we'll have to dive into this a bit more on our next show because there's a lot there.
Well, next show is going to be the schedule.
Oh, that's right.
So Thursday, we'll come back to the topic.
If Shamar Stewart isn't on the practice field,
this week and we don't get wind of that, then there's going to be a Shemar Stewart episode
coming your way, at least a segment about that.
But yeah, the schedule, the schedule, the schedule, no international games, Jake.
What I'm rooting for, two things.
Green Bay in September, Miami, November, December, let's do it, baby.
Or January, but probably not because they're just going to do AFC North games in January.
Because they'll have two games in January, right?
And no Christmas game, by the way.
I don't want a Christmas game.
if that happens are there multiple christmas games because i thought i saw the christmas game as
announced there's a couple oh yeah so we will find that out tomorrow we will have your
reactions tomorrow the bengals have the least travel we already know that the least travel of any
team that i do not have an international game in 2025 that's going to do it for this episode of the
lockdown bengals podcast thanks for listening and until next time hooday and have a good one
