Another head coach and the AFC gets fired, but is Dan pitcher going to stick with the Cincinnati Bengals?
Let's break it down.
You are locked on Bengals, your daily Cincinnati Bengals podcast.
Part of the Locked on Podcast Network, your team every day.
One up Bengals fans and welcome to another episode of the Lockdown Bengals podcast.
Part of the Lockdown Podcast Network, the number one sports podcast network in the land.
He's J.I'm Jake Liscoe, and we've got you.
you covered here every day on the Lockdown Bengals podcast.
Welcome back to all the everydayers out there and all of you who make
Locked on Bengals your first listen.
We've been keeping an eye on what's going on with the Cleveland coaching search
and Dan Pitcher's potential future as a head coaching candidate up north in Ohio.
And it doesn't look like there's a ton of momentum in that direction right now.
And with some of the other coaching moves around the AFC where Zach Taylor and Andy
Reid seemed like the last guys standing in this conference, there are increasingly interesting names
available if the Bengals are in a spot where they need to make a change, an offensive coordinator,
and it just continues to draw that stark comparison between other teams in this conference and the way
the Bengals are handling things with their coaching staff and the different amounts of leash that
exist around the NFL, inpatient owners, patient owners, whatever you want to call it.
It's an interesting contrast.
The Bengals also made a roster move, signed a player to an extension, not the player that
everyone wanted to see an early extension for, but we'll finish the show with the Tanner Hudson
news in a few minutes.
But let's start with the Dan pitcher update, James.
What's the latest feeling from your end as far as Dan pitcher's candidacy for the Cleveland
Browns job?
Yeah.
I thought all along that he was going to be.
one of the finalists and impressed in his interview.
They're obviously very much aware of what he did here in Cincinnati.
This is interesting for me because obviously I have contacts up in Cleveland and I work there for a spell.
And part of what the Browns want to do, and certainly on Monday we were seeing this, Jim Schwartz, their defensive coordinator, they're trying to keep him.
and someone, a media member, to be clear, last week, my buddy Darrell Ryder was like,
hey, would Dan pitcher be willing to do like an associate head coach less offensive coordinator
thing with Jim Schwartz?
And look, if I'm Dan, I would already be turned off by the quarterback situation.
But the weird power potential structure with Andrew Barry, who seats should be hot, I would imagine their GM.
and you mix that with a defensive coordinator that I think has the players ear and the players want to stay around.
I don't know.
I think that that may scare Dan off some.
That's why we haven't seen at least as of Monday a second interview.
I think that's why.
I don't think it's because the Browns were turned off by Dan.
Maybe not.
Maybe I'm way off on this.
But the Jim Schwartz love might make it tough, even if naturally it would fit, right?
offensive mind and defensive mind,
Jim Schwartz probably wants to be the head coach.
And so how do you balance that if you're Dan?
I'm not sure you do.
Regardless, I think that's the Brown's goal,
and that's why you've seen them interviewed the 30-year-old
from Jacksonville and go that route.
Dan Pitcher isn't a 30-year-old.
He's been experienced.
And, you know, he's far more experienced, I would say.
And so, yeah, don't be shocked if this is,
if this is this is it for dan at least as far as cleveland goes now buffalo who knows but uh i think
as far as cleveland goes it looks like they might be going in another direction whether that's on
dan's accord or on their accord the early reports out of the names bubbling up for the buffalo job
i'd be surprised if if pitcher is on their list now i don't know why why wouldn't he be i just it just
doesn't seem like that's what buffalo's doing like that the names that you've like it's it's like it's
the nays you heard about the Tennessee John like the the the Matt Nagy's of the world like the
direction you can kind of get a vibe of like the kind of coach yeah like the kind of coaches that these
teams are interested in and look Mike McCarthy in Tennessee might make sense not to go too far down
this rabbit hole but like to stabilize the team Mike McCarthy will go in there and you'll probably
start winning some games now are you going to win a Super Bowl you know you got a one out of 20
one out of 20 chance of getting the you know you get a good team like he's going to do it one out of 20 tries
kind of thing you know but you could do worse yeah you could you could by the way side note
just because we'll go off of track of McDermott why wouldn't the Browns be interested in him
just throwing that one out there the Ravens could be interested like the Ravens if you could
get the McDermit Brady combo that that fits pretty well in in Baltimore
Right?
Like stylistically, Lamar, Derek Henry, the kind of offense they want to run,
the kind of run game that Joe Brady put together with the bills,
with Josh Allen and Cook.
You know, there's some parallels there.
It's also like pretty late in the process for McDermott to be getting out there.
I've seen speculation that Tomlin might be pulled out of his retirement.
I don't think so for the Buffalo job and would want to consider that.
I'd be surprised there.
Is that an upgrade?
I don't even,
I don't know.
I'm trying to win in the playoffs.
It's not like Tomlin's done it.
He hasn't had Josh Allen.
I think the,
the assistance that Tomlin has hired have been a huge problem for him in the last decade in Pittsburgh.
Yeah,
it's kind of the simple take there.
But the Cleveland is getting back to Dan Pitcher,
the second interviews that they have requested include Jim Schwartz,
who they,
I think I agree.
They really want to keep Jim Schwartz.
So why wouldn't you?
That defense has been really good when Jim Schwartz has been there among the best in the NFL
a couple of times when Jim Schwartz has been running that side of the ball.
Obviously, Miles Garrett helps with that a lot, but Schwartz deserves a lot of credit,
I think, for running that defense at a high level when the rest of that team has just been on fire.
The offensive side of the ball has been a mess, head coaching stuff.
I think it's interesting when you talk about Andrew Barry keeping his job and how that might affect the way coaches see that opportunity with Barry potentially on the hot seat.
And if Barry gets a higher coach in Cleveland notoriously impatient with their coaches, and then that doesn't work in a year or two, then you're out already.
There's probably not a great feeling of security with Barry keeping his job instead of like coming in with a new GM.
But in addition to Jim Schwartz, it's Grant Udinski.
the Jaguars offensive coordinator, Todd Monk,
and getting a second interview, the Ravens offensive coordinator,
Mike McDaniel, former Miami head coach,
getting a second interview request.
I think that's it.
Who would worry you the most out of that?
Like from a Bengals perspective.
Like losing pitch would suck.
So it helps that they're not losing him,
at least as of now.
But is it Mike McDaniel with like Jim Schwartz sticking around?
Like Mike McDaniel and then you got Schwartz?
Because maybe McDaniel wants to do that.
and yeah.
I think that's it.
Like,
I don't know,
like there's three offensive coaches here who,
I think Stefansky is a good offensive mind.
And that offense is just so defunct.
There's so much work to do from the offensive line,
the quarterback,
the receiver.
Like that offense is just a mess entirely.
There's maybe a good running back if they get Quintan Junkins back healthy, right?
Yeah.
And tight ends.
Recovers well from,
from the ACL.
Yeah,
they have some tight ends for sure.
but that offense is a mess, man.
Like as much as a Bengals defense is a mess,
that Brown's offense might be in worse shape.
And so, like, yeah, they're trying to bring in these three different
offensive coaches to try to write the ship there,
but can only paper over so much as an offensive coach.
And I don't know which of these.
I don't know much about Yudinsky.
I don't know how much you find the coattails of Liam Cohen, you know,
like is that?
Sure.
Yudinsky is it Cohen.
I don't want to spend too much time talking about the Brownshead
coach, I guess. But like Mike McDaniel on paper is the one that like stands out as like, if they get
McDaniel on offense and Schwartz on defense, they again have really creative, really strong
offensive mind and a defensive coach that is given the Bengals and the rest of the league
issues for the last couple of years. And I think that's it. That's probably what they're viewing
it as is right. We have a defense that gives the Bengals problems. And who would you be most worried
about? I'm more worried about Jamar and T than I am Derek Henry.
And so it's to me, this Bengals offense is why you want to keep Jim Schwartz around.
He's the guy with the talent that the Browns have had that can slow it down.
It's been an awful matchup for the Bengals.
There's no doubt.
Like they had no business losing that finale.
And yet they did.
And it irks me.
It's helped them draft wise and whatever.
But like, they're no business losing that game.
It's ridiculous.
Yeah.
And in the defense and that matchup is a big reason why.
Why? What if Dan Pitcher does end up getting it? What could it mean with the Sean McDermott firing?
There's a name that we should at least mention that is now out there that's getting head coaching buzz as well in the division.
And we'll see what it means for him. And if it could impact the Bengals, we'll have that conversation.
Plus, familiar faces coming back that later in the show coming up next.

All right, one thing that happened in Buffalo, Sean McDermott gets fired, and that's a whole topic.
I think that some Bengals fans are reacting to the fact that Zach Taylor is still around Sean McDermott fired.
and his 8 and 8th playoff record, all of those things,
but his overall record really good.
But it means that Joe Brady is available.
He interviewed for the Baltimore Ravens head coaching job.
He's getting some head coaching buzz in general,
including with the Buffalo Bills.
Naturally, Jake, with Dan Pitcher, at least getting some interest,
and who knows, maybe the bills do show some interest in him.
Maybe he gets an interview with one of these other openings
and ends up elsewhere.
To me, it's nice knowing that, hey,
there's at least one other realistic offensive coordinator option that could be out there to replace Dan Pitcher.
We obviously have talked about Brian Callahan, but Joe Brady would be a nice option as well if that were to transpire and Dan Pitcher were to get a head coaching job.
Yeah, there's obviously the connection with Joe Burrow going back to their LSU days and all of the success they had there.
It's interesting because the strength of his offenses in the NFL seems to be more of like the running game architecture.
And I wonder how much of that was Aaron Kromer, the Bill's former offensive line coach who's now retired.
And for me in the past, when there's been a discussion about Joe Brady as a potential head coaching candidate, when we were talking about, maybe Zach isn't secure in his job.
Maybe he didn't have a secret one year added onto his contract that we didn't know about.
And we thought there was a chance of the Bengals actually moved on.
I was interested in Joe Brady if it came with Aaron Kromer because I gave him a lot of credit for the run game as well.
and the development in the run game that Joe Brady's offense put forth
and was really good for a lot of the year.
A lot of Bill's fans after that game, after that loss are like saying stuff like
man, of Sean McDermott and Joe Brady survived this.
Joe Brady, a guy that I think Bengals fans see with a much more positive light than Bill's fans.
I think a lot of Bill's fans were pretty sick of Joe Brady and see it as Josh Allen
putting on the cape because that's what the media tells them is happening every single week
when it's not really what happened in that game again tangent but josh howl turned the ball over
a ton of times and his team kind of helped keep him in a position where you know that that broncos
offense was so bad for so much of that game that the bills were able to take that game down to the
wire anyway that point aside i think that this is pretty unlikely for a couple of reasons now right
like one, we don't think that Dan pitcher is necessarily still in the running for the Cleveland
job one way or another. He's not on that list of second interviews. That could change by the time
you're listening to this. But as of the time of us recording this, they've requested interviews
with four candidates for second jobs. And Dan pitcher is not among those. So seems to suggest that
that's going in another direction in Cleveland. And two, like you talked about,
Brian Callahan would be the obvious place that the Bengals would turn first.
And I think that that reunion would make a lot of sense.
It wouldn't surprise anyone if that were to occur.
But if Mike McDaniel doesn't get that Cleveland job,
and the Bengals do lose Dan Pitcher, say Dan Pitcher suddenly beats on Mike McDaniel
for that job or something like that, right?
I will be calling Mike McDaniel too.
And we've talked about this on the show.
I'd be calling Mike McDaniel.
I'd be calling Joe Brady.
I mean, I'd be talking to these guys.
addition to knowing, you know, what the relationship between Zach Taylor, Callahan, Burrow
looks like, knowing that those guys can operate at a high level together, I would at least
be interested in finding out about some of these other guys too.
Yeah, I think the options, that's the part that's important.
And honestly, McDaniel, for me, would be super intriguing.
I don't think the Bengals would be even close to what he would be looking for money-wise, right?
and with all these offensive coordinator jobs that are available,
the Eagles, Tampa Bay, teams like that, Chargers, Detroit,
like those are some good jobs.
And so the way my head went into this was like,
all right, well, if pitch leaves, Brian Callahan, it makes sense.
What if the Browns do circle back and end up,
because this is fluid and it's the Browns,
in a higher pitcher a week from now,
because their plan doesn't work or something behind the scenes goes awry or whatever happens.
And let's just say that.
Well, Callahan may be an offensive coordinator by that.
Mike McDaniel may be an offensive coordinator by then.
He might be a head coach.
Yeah.
If on the bills, would I be at least interested in that?
Yeah, I think so.
I think there are going to be a lot of teams that are interested in Mike McDaniel.
And there's just a lot of openings where the chairs haven't settled yet.
So having another possible.
offensive coordinator option who Joe Burrow I asked him about it last month ahead of that
Bill's game he's like oh man had a lot of great times with Joe and and Jamar Chase said how much
he learned from him and so when you have those two guys and the familiarity there you have to
mention it now what would it mean would Joe Brady come here without being able to call plays
what would Zach Taylor be willing to give up the play like there's so many wrinkles to this
that we don't really need to get into right now because Dan
pitcher still has the job. But having another option out there that has familiarity with
Joe Burrow and Jamar Chase, that's not a bad thing. There's no doubt about that. Yeah.
We'll see if you have to cross that bridge, obviously. The other part of this is like another
perennial playoff coach fired in the AFC. I know it. I don't know how much else there's
to say about this. It's just every time it happens, it's like, wow. They better be right.
Like these playoff teams are these big expectations, these coaches are part of the reason they have the big expectations.
I think Buffalo is crazy for firing McDermott and not being.
It's another one of these situations where like in Cleveland, like with Andrew Barry,
if I'm on the outside looking at the way that this roster has been put together and Bean has security there,
I would maybe be a little trepidious.
And that's why I think like some of the candidates that are being discussed early,
like including Brian Dable are these familiar names.
And Davis Webb is another one,
like a guy that used to play with Josh Allen.
Yeah.
Like these kind of familiar hires,
trying to find somebody that Josh Allen knows well.
And it's interesting.
You put it into context with the report from Ari Maherov
that the contract hold up between Harbaugh and the Giants
centered on reporting structure.
Harbaugh wanted it in writing that he would report directly to the owner
instead of the GM.
And so like I wonder if these sorts of things,
now, especially now that this is like publicly reported, if these sorts of things come up with
some of these jobs too, like in Cleveland, in Buffalo, like I want to report to the owner.
I don't want to report to this GM that may be on thin-ups.
And in just going back to Dan Pitcher, he saw that first time with Brian Cahillan.
Although I guess they promoted Brandon Bean, sorry, they promoted Brandon Beats.
Whoever gets hired in Buffalo, I think they formally are saying like you're going to report
to Brandon Bean.
Yeah.
And that's worth.
That might be worse.
Yeah.
Then keeping Duke Tobin to give you an example of things like that because he's talking about
drafts.
There's there've been a lot of issues there.
And well, they need to hire me because they need ride receiver help.
And guess who thinks about wide receivers 24-7, 365?
I do.
We'll continue the conversation with the newest member of the Bengals that has re-signed a deal

Cincinnati Bengals announced an extension.
Monday and Bengals fans immediately asked why is this not Dalton Reisner
Dalton risiner next these are the common replies I saw on social media they get a
one-year deal done with Tanner Hudson who continues to serve in the backup rule to
Mike Gaseki had a few red zone sub packages that he he saw the field for even when
Gaseki was healthy.
Mostly will continue to be the backup to Mike Gaseki.
Expecting this to be, as Andre Perota, the resident Bengals cap expert on social media,
points out a veteran salary benefit deal should be somewhere around a million dollars
for a cap hit and is also not a terribly binding contract.
But Hudson continues to have fans in the building in terms of the quarterbacks that
throw him the ball is a guy that they see as a.
a very reliable backup option and returns for a one-year deal.
This is a kind of deal that you see get done in January, James.
These veteran salary benefit deals that are going to be around a league minimum kind of deal,
the one-year easy kind of Hudson's not expecting a very robust free agent market,
likes the team, the team likes him, can get this kind of thing done very, very simply in January
compared to a guy like Dalton Riser, who I think we're going to continue to wait for news on
for at least another like five, six weeks here.
Yeah, I think we all thought Tanner Hudson was coming back.
It makes sense.
He was productive when called upon.
Joe Burrow really likes him.
He's easy to throw it to.
He knows the playbook.
He can play his role.
He's not going to cost a lot.
Makes a lot of sense.
It doesn't mean that the Bengals don't want Dalton Reisner.
It also doesn't mean that they're pushing to get something done right now
that anything is imminent. And so
do I think the Bengals
want to keep Dalton Reisner? I do. I think the coaches
like him. I think his teammates like him.
The front office certainly
would want to keep him and he wants to be
here. And that's a heck of a start.
But I'm not
waiting on pins and needles this
week thinking something's going to get done.
The Tanner Hudson, even the Tanner Hudson
deal, honestly, not
shocked, but it
was a bit surprising on Martin Luther King
day when that was announced in late
late Monday morning. We're seeing that like, oh, okay, Tanner Hudson, he signed his deal. And that might
have been agreed to two weeks ago, right, right after the season ended and, or when he was on vacation
or something like that. But he was in town. They get the deal done. That's great. And maybe he was
in town the whole time, too. I don't know the exact specifics, but deals like this do get done,
maybe more well. I would love for Tyson Anderson to get done, for example, some of those guys like
that. And I think Anderson's going to have probably a bit more of a market than than Tanner Hudson would.
Maybe they get it done anyway. But yeah, I don't, I don't think this is an indication that they're
really working to get Dalton Reisner done or pushing Dax Hill right now. Not that those won't get done
at some point, but I'm not waiting on pins and needles thinking that they're going to be done this week.
Some other deals that you could see happening imminently could be guys like Tyson Anderson. That's a good
shout but Jalen Davis will be another one of these guys that you can see signing a similar
kind of deal. Jalen Davis and Unrestricted free agent 30 years old, Tanner Hudson, or 30 years old
next year. Tanner Hudson is going to be 32 next year. I think you could also see potentially,
and this is a bit of a longer shot, I think, but potentially Cordell-Wolson would be in the
same sort of bucket. But outside of that, I would be a little bit surprised to see a ton of other
deals getting done in the imminent future here.
like the
Marco Wilson I guess
would be the other one
if they're interested
in bringing them back
but I'm not very convinced
they would
but it'd be like a Tanner Hudson
type deal
you know the same thing
and he got paid more than that last year
they do need corner depth
like depth
the the fringe of the roster
the training camp
battle kind of piece
but outside of that
like even Lucas Patrick
I think
might want to see
what kind of options he has out there
certainly Dalton Reisner
is going to want to probably wait to hear that combine chatter.
I think even can't sample, even if there's interest in him coming back,
maybe that's the other one that you could see happen before the combine.
It's these kinds of deals that I think you should expect to see in January now.
If the Bengals prove me wrong here and go get Dalton Ryzer done in the next couple of weeks,
I'll give them a lot of credit for that, to be honest,
because that means that they were very proactive in getting that deal done.
it's something that they could do, but getting ahead of the market and giving him a deal strong enough
to prevent him from wanting to do that combine legwork with his agent,
to prevent his agent from wanting to find out what other options are out there for
and what the market is exactly.
That would be something that I think you would credit the Bengals for if it does happen.
And if it does happen, we'll credit them for it.
Two for ten.
Two for ten.
And let's see how close it is, how far it is.
that that would be where I'm at.
The Flacco one would be great.
I don't think there's really a chance
he keep him from free agency.
Flacco might be a free agent until June.
Yeah, I don't know.
I don't know why he would necessarily do that
other than just not wanting to do the offseason stuff,
which is fine, I guess.
Yeah.
But we'll see.
Regardless, they're clearly not asleep at Paycor,
for those that make those just,
jokes. They're awake. Now, whether or not other deals will get done, it would be nice. Inking Dalton
Reisner would be, I mean, I think people would be like irrationally ready to throw a parade,
a party, at least a Reisner party somewhere. I shouldn't even say irrational because the guard thirst
has been there for damn, a decade almost. Yeah. Well, the Bengals get a deal done in January
after I spent some time telling people deals don't get done in January.
These are the, I did say it.
These are the minor deals you sometimes see in January.
Yeah, yeah.
You did.
At least you covered in there.
You got to get the disclaimers out there, right?
We'll be keeping an eye on, of course, what's going on with the coaching market.
If anything definitive occurs with Dan Pitcher, we'll have you covered there.
And got the national championship game later today, James.
College National Championship game.
Got a few prospects to watch.
for the Bengals, potential Bengals draft prospects.
And the Bengals really care about how these guys play in these championship games.
So you know they're going to be watching as well.
I mean, the entire NFL will be watching this game, I'm sure, for scouting purposes.
But that's what we got coming up next year, unless there's bigger news on the Lockdown Bengals podcast.
And until then, thanks for listening to this episode of the Lockdown Bengals podcast, Hoode.
And have a good one.
