Starting point is 00:00:33 as we take a look at the Broncos quarterback position going into training camp. There's no question as to who the starter is. But maybe one of the bigger questions surrounding this position group specifically will evolve around who is the backup quarterback behind Bo Nix. We'll go through and answer the question as to whether or not the Broncos will carry two or three QBs on their active roster coming into this upcoming season, especially with Davis Webb as the play caller. We'll highlight the main battle that you need to watch at this position, Jared Stidham versus

Starting point is 00:01:01 Sam Ellinger. but we're going to kick things up by talking about the biggest story and the one that matters more than anything. Bo Nix fully clear, ready to go for the start of training camp and whether or not Sean Payton will also slow his approach with bringing Bo along, even though he is fully cleared to go. We'll go through all that here on today's episode of the show. So let's get into it here, Broncos country. One of the bigger storylines facing Bo coming into 2026, I think if everyone is looking at it from the outside perspective is, will the ankle surgeries be something that hinders his game?

Starting point is 00:01:32 We met with Boe during mandatory mini camp, the offseason program where he said the doctors, they went in on the cleanup procedure and my ankle's as good as new. He said, if not, my biggest worry is that I'll be able to be more mobile than I have been, which, you know, if that were to be the case, that'd be scary for the NFL. Bo's mobility is such an important aspect of his game. I think so far through his first two years in the NFL, we've seen that. He's got nine rushing touchdowns. There's been moments, key moments where his legs and his mobility have helped the Broncos win

Starting point is 00:02:01 games. I'm going to go to one of the more important examples in recent memory, and that's against the Houston Texans. That vaunted number one defense in the NFL. He scrambles out to his right and almost kind of sets up perfectly because the Texans, they overpursuit on the play. He cuts a back, has a 25-yard run that really helps set up Will Lutz's game-winning field goal. And Denver's come from behind victory on the road against a very formidable AFC South opponent here. And so when I look at Bowen, his mobility, I think that was one of the things that everybody wanted to know, will it be limited? I've asked Sean Peyton and Sean answered me directly by saying he doesn't think that there's going to be any limitations. Bo is going to be fully cleared and ready to go.

Starting point is 00:02:41 Like that's going to be an element of his game. They're not going to try to take away. And rightfully so, because if you try to take away something that is so effective for a player that helps him be the best version of himself, well, then you are really kind of limiting. You're handcuffing that player. And that's not what the Broncos want to do. Certainly that's not what Bo Nick's wants to do. He's had ankle procedures dating back to high school, dating back to the college area. And even, I think a lot of people forget, after his rookie season, he also had a cleanup procedure on his ankle after his rookie year. He had three transverse process fractures in his back. That did not require surgery. The offseason procedure he had was an ankle

Starting point is 00:03:16 cleanup procedure. And that really didn't impact him, I would say, at all, in the 2025 regular season. So I'm expecting Bow's mobility to remain intact here. And I mentioned it earlier here. This Broncos team has sky high expectations coming into this season and all eyes are going to be on Bow Nix. But I also think there's this unfair narrative that a lot of people have painted about Denver's QB1 here. There are a lot of people trying to diminish what he is accomplished in his first two seasons. 24 wins in his first two years.

Starting point is 00:03:45 Back-to-back playoff appearances, a playoff win against Josh Allen and the Buffalo bills that got them to the AFC championship game, one game shy of the Super Bowl until that ankle injury popped up. There are a lot of people trying to diminish his success by saying, well, you know, Bo's just been carried by this defense. Bo's been carried by his offensive line. I think we saw on the AFC championship game how well that offensive line plays because of Bo Nix. Same offensive line unit that Russell Wilson had.

Starting point is 00:04:12 And, of course, we believe quarterback sacks mostly are a QB statistic. It's not necessarily what the defense has done. I'd say nine times out of 10. And for Boe specifically, in his first two seasons, he has been. the least sacked quarterback in the NFL. Compared to anybody else in his draft class, he has 64 total career touchdowns in two seasons, which is more than anybody else in his draft class,

Starting point is 00:04:38 more passing yards than anybody else in his draft class right now. And it just seems like a lot of the national media neighbors want to pick apart bow. And here's what I'll say, Broncos country, please pay attention to me as someone who is boots on the ground in Dove Valley Daily up close and personal covering this Broncos team, unlike a lot of other people that are unlike people in the national media, if they do not come to Denver's practices,

Starting point is 00:04:58 they don't pay attention to Denver outside of box scores and whatever advanced analytic they want to use to try to justify something. Stats can lie in a sense when you look at these advanced analytics. I think there's value to be had in them as long as it's painting the picture and context of a situation here. A lot of people say Bow Nix isn't an accurate quarterback. Well, last year he only had a what, 15.1% or 15.9% of a bad throw percentage on 612,

Starting point is 00:05:25 attempts. He had an on-target percentage of 77% last year. And that was significantly better than Caleb Williams, but a lot of people want to leave Bo Nix out of the rankings. They have him ranked 18th in their quarterback ranks. Who cares about all that stuff? At the end of the day, I've come to grips with it. And I think the reality is Broncos country, knowing that these people, these national media folks don't attend Denver's practices, I would know. I'm there every day. I've been there every day for the last four years. Just take my word for it. Stop investing. Stop investing. much in what they had to say. Pay more attention to what we're saying because we're there every day. We're trying to give you everything that we can see from what we are allowed to report on

Starting point is 00:06:02 here. So when it comes to Bo, we know he's fully cleared, ready to go for the start of training camp here on July 28th, which is just a little bit less than 10 days away. And the one thing I want to say, too, since we saw him at mandatory mini camp or he really didn't do any team drills. He did seven on seven drills and he completed three or four passes. If we're really charting that, keeping track, but his first pass was a touchdown to RJ Harvey. You know, kind of getting off right back where he started because the last throw he really had was the Marvin Mims touchdown. He had a couple of other ones as well.

Starting point is 00:06:33 And he set up obviously the throw to Marvin that drew a PI that set up Will Lutz's game winning field goal against the bills. But for Bo here, you know, the question for him coming into training camp, really what we're going to be watching, even though he is fully cleared, fully ready to go without limitations, will there be days here at training camp where Sean Payton reigns him back a little bit? I would not be surprised if that's the case. In Broncos country, I don't think we should read anything into it. Because historically, what Sean has done for guys who have been coming off of major injuries,

Starting point is 00:07:03 he has always had this approach where they will practice this stretch of games. He'll participate in team. But don't be surprised if Bo gets a day off or Bo has a limited day where he only does QB drills seven on seven, but maybe doesn't do team drills during one of the training camp practices. And I know Broncos country is going to be at a lot of me. So do not be alarmed when that does happen. I'm saying right now prepare yourself for the Broncos and for Sean Payton, Dave, so have to rain Bow win just a little bit because here's the deal.

Starting point is 00:07:30 Yes, you want as many reps as you can hear, but the number one thing is not doing too much, understanding where Bow's body is at, listening to it because you can afford to give Bo some rest days. He'll still be on the practice. It's not like he's going to be a non-participant at all. So prepare yourself for that. I'm excited to see what Bo can do, especially on day one. I know a lot of people are going to be paying attention to that. But I think those are the storylines you have to follow here for Bo.

Starting point is 00:07:55 The two procedures here, obviously the one after the Bill's game, the cleanup in April, which has not been a big deal at all. Bo is locked in and he's ready to go. Broncos country, and he's the guy that is going to lead this team to where they need to be. But it can't just be all on the shoulders of Bo. That's where you need support from the run game, which has been non-existent since Boe's taken over as QB. They have not had a good run game here in Denver.

Starting point is 00:08:16 And more importantly, you've had playmakers dropping the ball. 43 drops last season. that has to pick up. That cannot be the case here in 2026. And that's why they went out and they got Jalen Wado to help Bo Nix have all the pieces around him that are necessary. And I believe it will take off here for Denver in 2026. But arguably, one of the bigger storylines that we must follow going into training camp, backup quarterback. Last year, we saw the Broncos, unfortunately, have to tap into the backup QB role at the AFC championship game. And it didn't work out. But Jarrett Steadom might not be that guy with Sam Ellinger chopping at the bit to get. it role as a QB2 here in the mile I city. We'll break it down here on today's episode of the show. Starting point is 00:11:21 It just wasn't as widely broadcasted. And according to Broncos, head coach, Sean Payton, that's probably going to be the same exact case here going into training camp here in just under 10 days. Let's dive into the position battle at quarterback that Brockos Country needs to pay attention to. And thankfully, it is not a scenario where we have to worry about the starting quarterback job ever again, or at least for a long time. Knock on wood, hopefully that's the case. But Bonnix is the starting quarterback, and it is unquestioned that he is the guy. But behind him, some questions have. risen a little bit, whether or not Jarrett Stidham is that guy behind Bo Nix.

Starting point is 00:12:14 Now, Jarrett has been in this Denver Bronco system with Sean Payton the longest coming over initially in 2023. When Sean took the job, he became the backup quarterback to Russell Wilson. And over the course of time, we've seen a little bit of a smaller sample size here with Jared. We've got to see it against the final two game stretch at 2023 when Russell Wilson got benched because of his contract language, where we saw him against the charter. and we saw him against the Raiders.

Starting point is 00:12:41 They won against the Chargers. They didn't win against the Raiders. And one thing that maybe stood out in that, and this even translates to the AFC championship game where he did get the start in place of Bo Nix, who was on IR after the injury. The small sample size that we've seen from Jared Stidham, it kind of showcases that he does not necessarily have

Starting point is 00:12:58 the athletic profile that Bo Nix does inside of this offense. And there are a certain amount of wildcards that we've got to pay attention to here. And I'm not saying that the Broncos backup quarterback needs to have a very similar athletic skill set to bonex. I think that helps. But there are things that Jarrett Stidham does well as a veteran that makes sense. And now that Davis Webb is calling plays, and these guys have a lot of ties in common.

Starting point is 00:13:23 Davis, obviously, Jarrett and Sam, they all have the same quarterback trainer that they work with in the off season. Davis Webb still will get together and do some stuff here. But now that he's in the coaching world, he's the offensive coordinator and the true play caller here, now it really goes to can you design an offense that not only fits what Bo Nix does well, but if Bo has to miss a game or misses any time, how can you have someone step in offensively at the most important position of football and how can they perform even if they can't do the same things that Bo Nix does? That is hard.

Starting point is 00:13:56 That is hard to replicate. Now, obviously, Sean Payton has a history of other guys stepping in after Drew Breeds went down. You can go through and look at guys like Teddy Bridgewater. Trevor Simeon even stepped in a little bit. They didn't have a winning record with Simeon when he got to start, but Teddy Bridgewater went 5 and 0 when Drew Breeze had to miss some time. And then James Winston comes in as well at some point and has a really good record before he had the ACL injury initially. So it's hard when you factor in, okay, what is this offense demand of the quarterback? Mobility is obviously one of the most important things. Can the guy take care of the ball? That's very important inside of this offense.

Starting point is 00:14:30 And I would also argue, too, like, are the pieces around the quarterback sustainable? It goes back to Sean Payton's quote where he said during the week of the AFC champion, championship game. And this got revealed a little bit more inside of Seth Wickersham's recent article he put together at ESPN when he spent two weeks with the Broncos saying that I'm not worried about Jarrett Stidham. I'm worried about everybody else. That is the right mindset to have. But ultimately what struggled for Denver was Jarrett Stidham just made that one play, that one mistake that ultimately cost the Broncos the game. And look, I'm not going to pin the loss solely on Jarrett Stidham, right? I thought Jarrett Stidham got off to a pretty decent start. We saw him

Starting point is 00:15:08 throw the touchdown to Cortland Sutton, but it was the shovel pass. It was just, hey, throw that away if you can. You know, he tried to do it, but unfortunately it resulted in a turnover. And that led to the only touchdown of the game for the New England Patriots. So there was that correlation that, hey, even though that, you know, Jared Stidham, didn't give up the touchdown, his impact, his play resulted in the Patriots, ultimately scoring. And that was the difference maker in that game.

Starting point is 00:15:32 And there were just certain things that you thought of, man, if Bo was out there, Bo's not doing that. Like Bo's athleticism and mobility might have helped them in the run game a little bit, even in the snow where he could have fought forward for, you know, fourth and a one. He could have got a QB sneak. He's done that. You could have done a QB drawer, QB power with Bo there. I don't think you can do that with Jared.

Starting point is 00:15:51 And that's not a shot at Jarrett Stedom in any way, shape, or form. So the athletic profile, that might mean more for the Broncos QB job coming into this upcoming season compared to what we saw last year. And the sample size, like I said, we've seen what Jared hasn't been necessarily the greatest. He hasn't come out and just been this world beater, so to speak. And I know that's hard to expect of a backup quarterback. I think sometimes we lose side of that because we've seen some great stories around the NFL. Look, I mean, look at Nick Foles coming in after Carson Wentz tore his ACL and they win a Super Bowl. They beat Tom Brady and the New England Patriots.

Starting point is 00:16:24 Those types of Cinderella stories, they're nice, but they're hard to come by. It's a rarity in today's game. But now here's the wild card. Sam Ellinger, obviously, one thing that I noted about Sam during the offseason program, I felt like he was. the most aggressive quarterback. And he didn't hesitate to pull the trigger, especially when trying to attack downfield. He saw something. He saw a matchup that he liked and he wasn't afraid to throw it.

Starting point is 00:16:45 And he even throw it downfield, throw it into the middle in between a safety and another defender because he felt like he had the arm velocity to get the ball there. I like that confidence from Sam. He's a little bit of a gunslinger. I like that. We saw that last year. And now that he's more comfortable in this system going into year two,

Starting point is 00:17:03 I think it is worth paying attention to. How does the quarterback rotation behind Bo Nix look like during training camp between Stidham and Ellinger? On the contrast, I'll go back to Jared Stidham. He got most of the first reps in the offseason program. The thing that I noted about Jared was he, unlike Sam, he did not pull the trigger as much on downfield throws. He would take what the defense gave him, which isn't a bad thing, right? Sometimes as a quarterback, you have to take what the defense gives you. You don't want to force it into a rough spot.

Starting point is 00:17:32 But at times, I wish he would have been a little more aggressive. Now that's just an early sample size. Now he comes out in training camp and he's throwing the ball downfield. He's not afraid. Then I think, okay, now we're going to have a very interesting QB2 battle between he and Sam Ellinger. But so far, Ellinger coming into training camp is the guy to watch because of that, has a little bit more of an athletic profile.

Starting point is 00:17:51 And on top of that, last year, he had multiple opportunities to go join other team's 53 men rosters and he chose to stay in Denver. There is something about Denver that he likes. And I mentioned, Stidham, Davis Webb, and Ellinger, they all worked with the same quarterback trainer in Texas. So maybe that is something to watch. Maybe there's something that Sam says like, hey, I have a chance to really build my image here in Denver, even if I'm not the starting quarterback, but as a backup,

Starting point is 00:18:17 you can certainly do that. He can put yourself in that position. And so that leads us to the biggest question for the Broncos quarterback battle of training cap between two QB2 options is going to be, will they carry two or three QBs on the active roster going into 20? 26. Will Sean Payton and the Denver Broncos carry two quarterbacks or will they carry three on the active roster? That is a big question.

Starting point is 00:20:03 that we have facing this team going into 2026 where Sean's not going to be calling plays anymore. It's going to be Davis Webb. We've highlighted the storylines around Bo Nix and we talked about Jared Stidham, the momentum that he has and Sam Ellinger from the offseason program. And they will all come to ahead here in the month of July leading into August as well as preseason action takes place where the Broncos have one way preseason game to start and then two home preseason games and everything is going to be on the line for both of these quarterbacks. Now, the biggest question is, does Denver carry two or three?

Starting point is 00:20:35 Now, I think you can go through a multitude of situations. Bow's rookie year in 2024, they carried three quarterbacks. It was Bo, it was Jarrett Stidham, and it was Zach Wilson, who was that third emergency guy. And in 2025, it was Sam Ellinger who was that. But it was primarily Boe Nix and Jared Stidham. You had flexibility with a player like Ellinger because he's a vested veteran. You could release him and immediately sign him back to the practice squad. and that gave the Broncos flexibility.

Starting point is 00:21:03 And there were times where he got elevated to the game day roster, even if he was inactive. He served as the emergency quarterback. And there were some times where Sean Payton took care of him as well and ensured that he got a game check by making him active on game day in place of another player. But overall, the ideal scenario here for Denver is to have two QBs, I think, on this roster. That's my personal preference.

Starting point is 00:21:26 And you can still have a third. But this is where things get a little interesting, right? Now, we haven't talked too much about him on this episode specifically because of his status in terms of where he's at. But Sawyer Robertson, former quarterback out of Baylor, and if you don't know about him, go watch John Gruden's quarterback camp, the feature he did on him. He's a smart, smart kid. We saw him during mandatory mini camp, and he was the fourth quarterback there.

Starting point is 00:21:50 Now, this is where things get very interesting. That leads me to believe that Denver could carry two under their active roster. And it is going to be whoever wins the backup job between Jared Stidham and Sam Ellinger. And really it goes back to what Sean Payton said last year. He said, we see competition. It wasn't different last year. There's nothing that is etched in stone. There just isn't.

Starting point is 00:22:08 And that's a good thing. And that applies going into training camp for both of these guys right here. So whoever doesn't win that job will more than likely not be on this roster. I'd say come September when you have to make your final roster cuts. And that's where Sawyer Robertson, if he can have an impressive training camp, and if he can go through and even play well in the late stages, I would say, of the preseason. We're making things very interesting because we're going to see Bo in the preseason.

Starting point is 00:22:33 We're going to see Jared. We're going to see Sam. But how do you divide those reps up in a preseason game with four QBs? I don't think Denver, since Sean has come here, and maybe I'm mistaken, maybe Ben Danucci who was one of those guys. I can't draw my memory back that far to remember that specifically. But how does Denver manage four quarterbacks with preseason reps? To me, that is very, very interesting.

Starting point is 00:22:54 Whereas last year, it was just Jarrett and Sam in the games that Bo didn't play. And I think that was against the Arizona card. Cardinals where we didn't see him. We saw him against the 49ers early on, and we saw him against the New Orleans Saints, but we did not see him in that week two preseason game against the Cardinals. So you're going to have to figure out the rep share here for him. Could Soya Robertson be the Broncos practice squad quarterback going into 2026? I think based on how he performs in training camp and obviously the preseason, Adoro will open up for him. And also, we have to go back to him. And this goes into our Broncos country training camp bingo game.

Starting point is 00:23:26 take a drink every time Sean Payton says that you're not just looking at your roster, you're looking at 31 other teams rosters throughout training camp and throughout the preseason to see what guys might hit the waiver wire when roster cuts do take place. I would expect a few new faces on Denver's roster, ultimately when it's all said and done by the time that they have to fill out their regular season roster here after the final preseason game. They really have two days after it's a Friday and then that Sunday, they have to have the active roster put together here.

Starting point is 00:23:56 That's when roster cuts take place. It's crazy. I believe that's August 30th, if I'm not mistaken. So the Broncos will move quickly. Once again, my prediction is two quarterbacks here on Denver's 53. Bo Nicks, whoever wins the job, and then you have practice squad flexibility with Sawyer Robertson. Maybe there is going to be a situation that does pop up with one of these teams here

Starting point is 00:24:17 when it comes to the QB job. Like I'm looking at the Arizona Cardinals, and I'm thinking of Jared Stiddom there. And I understand that they. They drafted a rookie as well. They didn't draft them Premier. They still have the ongoing contract dispute with Jacoby Brissette down there. But I'm looking at that situation saying, okay, maybe that team will be interested in them. And I understand who Gino Smith is back with the New York Jets.

Starting point is 00:24:39 But I don't think Gino is that guy. I just don't. So could Darren Mugi maybe tap into wanting to pick up Jared Stittam? If he doesn't make the roster, maybe he signs with the New York Jets. And even if he's not the starter, maybe he's the backup. there to Gino Smith. And I'd say he's probably got a better chance of playing in New York than he does here in the mile high city. So we're going to be watching some other team scenarios across the NFL as it pertains to the quarterback battle here for Denver between Sam Ellinger, who was wanted by several teams last year. And that's going to obviously factor into the equation as well,

Starting point is 00:25:10 especially if he doesn't win the job. If he doesn't win the backup quarterback job, I would expect Sam to be elsewhere, to go to one of those teams that were certainly interested in him where he'd probably be the QB2 for some of these other teams.
