I'm Cody Roar, Credential Broncos,
reporter for my high sports.
Join as always by Sarah Bedinger,
site expert over there,

And on today's episode,
we are going to talk about
the Sean Peyton bombshell
that was late afternoon
yesterday at the NFL Combine,
where he announced,
Davis Webb will be calling the plays
for the Broncos offense in 2026.
As he gives that up,
we'll also analyze how that
boost the Broncos offense with Webb, maybe now coming in as the play caller.
And on top of that, we'll also talk about how this move impacts Sean Payton and what he can do going forward all on today's show.
Sarah, look, there were a lot of people.
And look, even myself, too, I was skeptical.
I had been on the record of saying, I'm not sure Sean's going to give up play calling,
but you and I have went through reasons here on the show as to, hey, why would Davis Webb stay in the Mile High City?
We'll come to find out.
We now officially know, Sean Payton, will be handing over the.
play calling Reigns to Davis Webb this season.
He is, and it's a surprise for many in Broncos country.
I think a lot of folks were in that camp, Cody, of saying,
I just don't know that Sean Peyton will ever really do this.
And I don't think Sean Peyton would ever do this if it wasn't for the right guy that he
was offering the opportunity to call plays to.
And that's exactly what he said at his scouting combine press conference, Cody,
that, man, it's got to be somebody who's good enough to deserve to basically be
handed over these duties and Davis Webb is just that impressive. We know that he got an opportunity
last year during the preseason that impressed everybody in Broncos country and you and I had even
kind of joked like, boy, that might have been a mistake by Sean Payton to let him do that because
now everybody in Broncos country is like, when's Davis Webb going to call plays? Well, Sean even
admitted and acknowledged during his presser, Cody, that he was considering this change dating back
to midseason last year. So this is something that he's been thinking about for a long time. And it
Also, it just, I got to just say, every now and again, the tinfoil hat within, it comes through.
You know what I'm saying?
And so you and I, we read the breadcrumbs or we followed the breadcrumbs.
We read the tea leaves.
We put on our tinfoil hats and we were like, hey, remember when Sean Payton talked about driving in the rain at night?
Hey, you know, the fact that Ian Rappaport said the Broncos tried to lure Jill Brady from the bills with the idea that maybe he would call plays in mind.
And hey, the fact that the Broncos kept Davis Webb after he was being considered for head coaching gigs elsewhere, certainly offensive coordinator gigs elsewhere, but he decided to stay in Denver.
Now, why would he do that?
Well, we now know why he did that.
The tinfoil theories came to pass, Cody, that Davis is going to be calling plays.
Now, Sean's not going to be completely disconnected.
He noted that even on game days.
He's still going to call some plays.
but I think certainly this will be the biggest and most important delegation that he's ever made as a head coach.
Yeah, and this is a big change too because for what, over 20-something years,
he's one of the best play callers in NFL history.
He's obviously top 25 and most wins in NFL history by a head coach.
This is a huge change for Sean, which we'll get into a little bit later on here.
But for those that did miss it, here is how Sean broke it down.
The fact that he was going to be handing over the play calling reins.
to Davis Webb. It was something
that I kind of knew
during the year. He and I
visited on a handful of
occasions. We're talking about Davis Webb.
He's extremely
talented.
With regards to play calling, it's something that
you know,
I think he'll be really good at it.
And I know that's like,
man, are you going to give up play calling?
And I would only do that if I felt like it would help our team.
I'll still be involved.
with what we do offensively, just like what we do defensively.
But I do think he has a gift.
I think he's real sharp.
I'm glad he's on our staff.
I wanted to highlight this too because Sean almost at the very part of his answer to this question,
almost kind of didn't answer it at first.
It was like indirectly saying like, yeah, I'm giving up play calling, so to speak.
I found that funny.
But then he did obviously go through and confirm that.
And I think maybe what he has seen from Davis Webb,
And I can just tell you this.
Throughout this season, I have sat in the press box.
I've just kind of watched as everything kind of transpires here.
And the thing I like about Davis Webb calling plays now for Denver here in 2026 is the idea that,
hey, this is the guy that every time Bo Nix comes off the field, he's going and he's sitting with Davis Webb anyways.
They're looking at the iPad.
Whereas I was like, you know, if Sean's calling plays, I would love for Sean as the play caller to go sit there with Bo.
Now that process is going to stay the same.
Davis is going to be calling the plays on the sideline,
but he's still going to have that after drive series with Bo where they look at everything.
I like that.
I think that will be big for Bo Nix's growth.
But for Sean to really just say, hey, I'm giving this up.
Man, that doesn't come lightly.
There's guys like Chase Daniels that are coming out and saying, like,
I never thought Sean would do this.
So the fact that he is speaks to like how much he trusts Davis Webb.
And certainly this will challenge Webb a little bit.
Sean's going to have final say on a lot of different things.
but, man, I think this has every benefit here to the Broncos going forward.
And I know we'll talk about what that looks like from Webb's perspective and from Sean's perspective.
But this is a huge day in the Mile High City.
This is a day I never thought would come.
And Sean Payton also confirmed, Cody, speaking of Bo Nix, that Bo had nothing to do with this decision.
So I think that's an interesting note to consider as well.
But you're right.
I mean, Davis Webb certainly has a lot more pressure on him now.
And thankfully, he doesn't necessarily.
have to design an offense. He's already got the, he's just getting the keys to the car, right? It's like,
if you want to continue with Sean Ferris Bueller's day off, you know, now we're going into Cameron's
dad's garage and the kids have the keys to that car and they can take it for a little joy ride
around the city of Chicago, right? So Davis Webb is Cameron, you know, who, you know, is Ferris Bueller's
best buddy and now they're going to go out on the town and have a day. And I think that's the exciting thing about
this, right? Is the fact that Sean is, you know, unlike the dad in that situation, he's giving
the kids to the kids, right? And he's saying, all right, you know what? It's not a matter of like,
all right, do you think you can do better than me? Go ahead and show me. I didn't get that vibe at all.
I think the perception of Sean Peyton has always historically been like, man, this guy's an
egomaniac. This guy's pride is way too much so that he will never give up the play calling duties
or he would never do this. He would never say that. Boy, the posture that I,
heard and saw throughout this whole press conference, Cody was humility, true leadership,
believing in a young coach.
And what he just said there was so important, he has a gift, right?
And as a head coach, you recognize when you have gifted people on your staff and you
either let them go spread their wings elsewhere or you let them do it on your watch.
Sean Payton, you know, he's a good leader.
He knows when he has to be in control of something, when he has to hold firm on something.
But he also obviously seemingly knows when he can say, you know what, I'm going to let Davis Webb, who I believe is a gifted potential play caller.
I'm going to let him spread his wings and continue to write his story as an NFL coach.
And I'll be the CEO over at all.
Well, and he had obviously offers from various other teams.
He was in head coaching consideration here.
And the fact that he turned all that down because he wanted to stay and build some continuity here with the quarterback that he has,
they feel like they're building something special.
and for Sean to have complete trust in him and give him that autonomy,
man, that is so huge.
That speaks to where Webb has come as, you know, former player.
Obviously, he's mentioned as a, you know, former quarterback played the position,
but he's a coach's son.
That process is so important.
But also it leads me to put on another tinfoil hat here, my friend.
This could also be a move that maybe Davis Webb down the road, not anytime soon,
but maybe Davis Webb, if things continue to go well and this goes well,
maybe when Sean says, you know what, I've done enough coaching, I want to enjoy life.
Maybe Davis Webb's first head coaching gig will be with this team, especially if
Bowdox continues to ascend as the franchise quarterback.
That could be a very real possibility here going forward.
Broncos country, let us know your initial thoughts here on Sean Payton heading over the keys.
Let us know if you thought he was going to give it away or if you felt like Davis
Webb was going to call players all along.
And if it's the latter, I'm telling you, you're lying.
We don't believe you on that.
But coming up next, we are going to talk about how Davis Webb, him now being the play caller,
what ways this can boost the Broncos offense and Bo Nix here in 2026.

The decision to promote Davis Webb to
offensive coordinator was not just
in title. He's going to be calling
plays. So who stands to benefit
the most from that? Well, we talked about how
Bo Nix will obviously benefit
from having Davis Webb back. Continuity
is huge, but there's some players on this
roster that might get a significant
boost in usage going forward. We're going to tell you all
about it on today's episode. Lockdown

Cody and I really appreciate you considering supporting the show in that way means a lot
to us.
Cody, let's break down who benefits.
the most. I want to start the bidding at one Evan Ingram. I know there's some questions right now
about whether or not he's even going to be back. A lot of folks are saying, hey, he could be a
cap casualty. Anything's possible at this point in the off season, I guess. But to me, I view
Evan as an integral piece. And we'll talk more about what George Payton had to say. But
certainly after hearing George speak as well, I feel like Evan is not only going to be back,
but playing a big role. I think he is one of the biggest benefactors of Davis.
calling plays going forward.
Yeah, no, I agree with you.
Man, this could even warrant a bonus episode in and of itself on Evan Ingram.
I agree just because of the fact that there is that former tie in Davis Webb,
that was a big reason why Evan even signed to Denver,
not because of just the pitch on being the Joker and having this role on a rising up-and-coming team,
which obviously they won the number one seed in the AFC playoffs.
They won the AFC West.
They won 11 straight games.
I mean, Evan Ingram made the right decision ultimately joining Denver
over the Los Angeles Chargers, but another poll, and we talk about the three degrees of separation,
it's because Davis Webb is one of his former teammates at this point, having that type of influence.
Now, I think, and I agree with you, this benefits Evan Ingram specifically because there is going to be this concerted effort from Webb to get the ball in Ingram's hands, right?
Whereas with Sean Payton, we saw multiple tight-in and personnel sets, okay, that's fine, but include Evan in that versus it just being Adam Troutman and
Adkins, what we saw in 2025, Evan Ingram is too talented of a player. And granted,
we've acknowledged here as well, Evan's got to focus on fixing the drops that he had,
obviously, last season. But for him to not be as involved in the offense as he should have been,
was a little bit of a roster malpractice in our opinion. But for Webb, he is going to get him
the ball. And I look no further than that preseason game in which Webb was calling the plays.
One of the very first plays was an underneath drag from Evan Ingram in space where he caught it.
And then he got up the sideline for what?
48 plus yards down the sideline.
That's what the Broncos need a little bit more of.
I think stock up, Evan Ingram, absolutely.
Yeah, 100%.
And I think it goes to the playmakers in general, right?
I mean, when you talk about personnel groupings that the Broncos had last year,
how often they were in 12 and 13 personnel,
how many conversations we had about why is Marvin Mims not playing more snaps?
Even with Cortland Sutton,
if you want to go all the way to the top of the target share,
we're wondering like why is Cortland not getting more targets? I mean, why are they not getting him more
opportunities downfield? We did not see a ton of that. So I think with Davis, you're, it's not exactly
putting fresh eyes on the offense, but it's saying, okay, this guy has been waiting for an opportunity
to maybe put his stamp on things. And more so than just having control, I think he can now have that
voice to say, we need to get the ball to Marvin Mimsmore. We need to get the ball to Evan Ingram.
more. We need to have better balance. We need to stick to the run. So he's now going to be in charge of
all that stuff as the primary play caller. We know Sean, like he said in that clip that you shared,
Cody, he's going to be like for the offense, what he is for the defense, which the defense,
Vance calls the place, right? As far as I know, Sean isn't over there saying, hey, I want you to
blitz right here. But, you know, he's going to have that same type of oversight. And I think that's so
big for the playmakers overall. So Evan Ingram is one specifically, but I
I'll say Marvin Mims number two specifically is another guy that I think could get a lot more involvement with this change.
Well, I'm curious to see if Broncos country that listened to yesterday's episode went back and found the Easter egg from week one.
And if you didn't, I'll give it to you. Spoiler alert.
Davis Webb is looking at Marvin Mims on that play call, right, that Bo Nix threw to Cortland sudden end up being a touchdown anyways.
Marvin was schemeed wide open.
Davis Webb was looking at him and signaling touchdown, but Bo went to Cortland.
still the same end result there.
So I do agree.
I think Marvin Mims, Evan Ingram, these guys are going to thrive a little bit more.
But I think where the offense is going to be boosted,
significantly from a schematic and operation standpoint,
is going to be getting the play call in in a timely manner.
No more Bo Nix looking off to the sideline going, hurry, hurry, hurry,
get the play call and get the personnel in.
That's one thing that Sean said as well in his combine conference
was that he believes things are going to be quicker.
Now, he has a lot of trust in Davis to be able to do that.
And I think it is going to be good for Davis as well as he gets into this jump as a first-time offensive play caller where he's going to call a play.
Sean's going to be like, why'd you call that?
And he's going to give the answer.
Sean's going to be like, okay, I see it.
Or he's going to challenge him a little bit.
That will be good for getting Davis Webb out of his comfort zone here going forward.
But I think the timeliness of getting the plays and getting the personnel in, I think that right now on paper at least will be drastically better than what we saw in 2025.
How do you feel about that?
big time the overall flow of the game i think that's a huge deal and and it can help sean payton
as well to kind of see like oh this is this is kind of what the pace needs to be because for
sean i think that's where he talked about that that comment that he made about driving in the rain
at night you know and this is where you get into that whole i gave the example of during the
a fc championship game it's fourth and short you're up seven to nothing you've got all these
different things just um just tons of things going through
your mind, the time left on the clock, the situation, whether or not they're going to measure,
the weather that's going to be in the second half, you know, all these sorts of factors that are
coming at Sean Payton all at once on top of the fact that he's got to call the right play
on fourth down to convert to move the chains. And it just ends up being something to where you
look back and you say, okay, well, shoot, if the play works, you're not questioning it at all.
but when the play doesn't work, now you're starting to say, hey, operationally, procedurally, things need to be better, they need to be quicker.
We can't let the clock run all the way down, call a timeout, and then still not call the right play.
So that to me is, like you said, a clear area where Davis Webb being the play caller helps a ton, his primary focus, calling plays, playing the chess match of being the offensive play caller, going up against whatever the defense is scheming against him, getting the playmakers involved, getting the right.
right personnel on the field, doing it in a timely manner.
Because when the Broncos played with pace last season, Cody,
I felt like that's when the offense was at its best.
Sean Payton took a little exception to that.
It's going to be interesting to see with Davis Webb.
I know we've got a few months to wait yet.
But if that's going to be something significant that he changes,
is this offense playing with a little bit more pace.
And that's something that Bo Nix wants.
And that's why I think him calling plays is also another boost to Bo Nix.
Look, Bo and Sean are still going to have that relationship between the head coach
and quarterback.
But you got this triangle now, right?
Sean Payton talked about having, you know,
the importance of having a relationship triangle,
so to speak, when coming into the Broncos,
being the new head coach at the GM,
you know, the ownership, that triangle had to be a perfect fit.
Well, now I think with Davis Webb, Bo Nix, and Sean Peyton,
this is that perfect fit for them.
And I think as well,
it's going to allow Sean to do a little bit more,
which sets us up perfectly here because coming up next Broncos country,
we're going to talk about how this move with Sean handing over the reins,
how this impacts Sean,
himself with his role as the head coach.
We'll break all that down.

For Sean Payton, it was a lot to give up the play calling duties
in which he's been responsible for for the last handful of.
years, but it also allows Sean to continue to evolve as a coach for whatever duration he has left
in his coaching career.
I want to say thank you once again to everyone in Broncos country, all the every day is out there.
Thanks for tuning in making us your first listen, however you choose to do so here.
Sarah, let's talk about this, right?
Because I think everybody was shocked initially.
I know that there was initial speculation about Sean giving up play calling for him to come
out and say it versus it being this mystery that we're going to scat the wait and see
till week one of the NFL regular season.
it's nice that this is out there now and allows the Broncos to plan.
But also for Sean, I think it allows him another chance to evolve as a coach in this new
transition where he still has final say over everything.
But now he has a new set of eyes, so to speak, as to maybe how he can manage this team
and help the Broncos win a Super Bowl.
Absolutely.
I mean, he's going to be able to see the team from a true CEO point of view, right?
I mean, and he already does that to a large degree.
he has his hand and everything from obviously up to this point he was calling plays for the offense
but he's also like hey the PA announcer needs to be at this volume otherwise I can't hear
what's going on and then I look stupid during the introductions you know he has I mean Sean literally
puts his hand on everything Cody he's very detail oriented so when it comes to this team it's
it's from the roster to the people probably serving food at the cafeteria or what food gets served
at the cafeteria and what music gets played in club dub.
I mean, everything that Sean Payton does is from a CEO point of view.
But now, and we know this comes in conjunction with him going back to the NFL competition
committee as well.
So Sean is, I think, one of the best game managers in the NFL.
I don't think everybody would necessarily agree with that.
But I would say, look at how the Broncos have performed in two-minute situations at the
end of the first half, at the end of game situations over the last three.
three seasons, even with Russell Wilson at quarterback and tell me that Sean Payton doesn't know
how to manage a game because, I mean, man, the Broncos have had some clutch wins over the last
three seasons, especially last year. So to me, I think this gives him a little bit more of an
opportunity to evaluate personnel. It gives him a little bit more opportunity to coach the coaches.
It gives him a little bit more opportunity to coach up his players as opposed to focusing solely
on play calling, play sequencing.
You know, he's going to be doing all that stuff still.
But I think to me, this is a direct impact on the perception of Sean Payton as well,
that people view him as prideful, as arrogant, as an egomaniac.
This is the exact opposite of that, and especially the approach that he took to addressing
it.
I mean, it couldn't fly more in the face of what people assume about this guy.
Yeah, and I imagine it was already a strength of Denver, their game management, as you
would mention, I think it gets even better with that focus.
I think for Davis Webb, here's where I think Sean can really help him,
especially being there on the field.
Probably, he's going to stand probably next to him.
Or he may even give him some space and some distance and listening on the headset.
But Sean can look at personnel coming in defensively.
He can look at the front or the scheme that maybe that defense is running on a play-to-play basis
where he said, hey, Davis, they're doing this.
He could be the quick eyes and ears for Davis-Web as he is calling plays.
or after one play, hey, they came out in this.
Like, they'll have tendencies on their opponents, right?
But sometimes teams will change up those tendencies based on if they want to play you
with a certain way, if they want to try to dictate the terms.
I'm very curious to see how Sean benefits from that.
But, I mean, just think about it this way too, Sarah.
And ultimately, if it leads back to my tinfoil hat where, let's say, Davis Webb,
kind of operates here as the offensive corner.
It goes well.
The Broncos offense continues to grow and evolve.
They have a franchise quarterback in Bo Nix.
And Sean at some point, let's say two or three.
three years down the road. Maybe this is a conversation that they have and that they will have
periodically. He's like when Sean says, hey, when I step away, I want you to have my job as the
head coach here. You have that built in succession plan where you're not necessarily worried about,
hey, Sean's retiring. What are we going to do? You bring in a new coach. He changes the whole
scheme, especially around your franchise quarterback. You keep that continuity intact to me. And if the
Broncos somehow win a Super Bowl, man, think about it from this way, Sarah. The Broncos win a Super Bowl.
becomes the first head coach to do so with two teams in NFL history.
And on top of that, he creates the next generation head coach that continues to lead that team.
And now his tree continues to expand.
That right there, cementes Hall of Fame legacy for Sean.
This type of move right here, even though it's risky, I would say in a sense,
because if Davis, let's say the offense struggles, Davis would easily be a scapegoat,
so to speak, as the play caller.
So it doesn't necessarily impact Sean from a negative standpoint.
I mean, Sean gains everything to benefit from this.
I completely agree.
I just feel like this is setting him up for success,
both any direction that you take to kind of arrive at some sort of conclusion.
To me, it just sets Sean up for success.
And I wouldn't be surprised either, Cody,
if there were those conversations long term.
Because at this point, I mean, Davis not necessarily going to get anything in writing.
I mean, I don't know that the Broncos would necessarily guarantee him anything.
But at the same time,
Like, I mean, he had chances this offseason to interview with teams for their head coaching gigs where they have legitimate, I mean, actual MVP quarterbacks.
And it's not to say that he would have been hired by the Ravens or the Bills, but I think what you learn from a process like that, as well as a team that now has the number one pick in the draft with a guaranteed quarterback in that slot, right?
So what you learn from that is this, the grass is greener where you water it, right?
And you don't just jump at the opportunity when Cleveland's job becomes available to go.
I'm going to go coach the Browns because the job is available.
The Raiders job is available.
I'm going to go coach the Raiders.
Like for Davis, he's so young and he needs to take the right position.
So if the right position becomes available, you jump at that opportunity.
But at the same time, if you're talking about all these teams that consistently have turnover,
things like that, why would you rush to leave Denver if you have an opportunity to
potentially take over Sean's job in a couple years.
Interestingly enough, Cody, there was conversations today from Sean about George Payton's
extension. What about Sean's extension, right?
I mean, interestingly enough, that didn't necessarily come up.
So I think the tin foil hat is there.
I mean, when it comes to this in particular.
Yeah.
Well, let's keep our eyes on it here, Broncos country.
I think this is something to, you know, kind of keep in the back of your mind,
not at the forefront by saying, hey, is this going to happen in a year or two?
I still think Sean has plenty of time left in his coaching career.
but I do think that maybe kind of under the premise of what we all believe to be true about Andy Reed in Kansas City and Steve Spagnolo.
I think Steve is just waiting for Andy to retire.
Maybe there is that conversation agreement in place between those guys for that to eventually take place whenever Big Red does decide to hang it up.
Perhaps it could be similar here in the Mile High City between Sean Payton, one of the best head coaches in NFL history and Davis Webb,
who's considered a very, very exciting young, up-and-coming rising coach.
And now he's going to get his full opportunity to unleash.
the Broncos offense in 2026.
We're excited in Broncos country.
We'll stay with you every step of the way here throughout the entire
off season, especially with NFL free agency coming up in a couple of weeks.
But tomorrow's episode of the show, Sarah and I, we're going to sit down.
We're going to talk about everything we learn from George Payton, his press conference,
where he's out with the contract extension talk.
But more importantly, him identifying the linebacker position as one of those positions
they have their eyes on specifically.
Maybe even the depth that that position contains in this year's NFL draft.
You're going to get George Payton bites and so much more.
On tomorrow's episode of the show, we'll see you then.
