I'm an I'm a Nilo Piro, and it was certainly a bit of a mixed bag for the Denver Broncos in their second preseason game. But I have one overarching takeaway, which is a positive one, despite the Broncos being crushed in the game. Sarah Bedinger, predominantly orange. Bo Nix is back. Jalen Waddle, the connection? Yeah, that'll do it. Yeah, I'd say that would do it. I'm Nick Ferguson.

you guys. And I'll ask you this to both you, Sarah, and you as well, Nick. On a scale of 1 to 10, how much stock are we putting into the end result of this game, a 33 to 13 thumping, 10 being a lot, one being nothing. I'll start with you, sir. I'm putting less than zero stock into the final score of this game. And I think that honestly, like I understand where a lot of people are coming from when you

look at kind of the details within what that score represents, right? But the main focus for me from this game is, is the return of Bo Nix. and the connection he made with Jalen Waddle in the game, the way the offense played when those two were together out there on the field. Obviously, the starting defense may be a different question there, but I also think they kind of got host on what should have been, I thought, a forced fumble. Pretty obvious to me, Christian Watson there.

So they kind of got a takeaway, taken away, but to me, it's all about Bo Nicks, right? It's all about him coming back and doing exactly what we talked about on the squad show that we did earlier in the week where we said, hey, he's got to get out there. Even like Nick alluded to, kind of that, even that same point that he was at on the field and just prove that he can get past that mental hurdle. And he did that. I mean, he was making some big time throws in this game.

He's working under center. He's working from the shotgun. He's rolling out. He's hitting throws at all levels of the field. I mean, what didn't we see from Bo Nicks in this game that we could have wanted to have seen? I mean, especially the fact that he looked as, you know, springy as he did out there as well. I was impressed and I was encouraged.

I think this is a tell of two halves, if you want to look at it that way. So if we are actually giving scores, I'm going to say if we're going zero to 10, I'll give what we saw from Bo Nix. I'll give it a seven. And to me, I want to start out really low

with the opportunity to kind of improve as we start to see more of a connection with, you know, Bo Nix and a lot of the receivers. But obviously, you know, Everyone wanted to see what Bow was going to do. Everyone wanted to see Jalen Waddle. We saw him in practice.

We heard about the connection, why the Broncos wanted him. And we got a chance to actually see it. Now, it was only a quick peek, but that's about it. Enough to wet the whistle to just kind of tease people of what the season could be with these two. Now, as far as the second half, and that's going to get us into the backup quarterback. And we get into that later wasn't so great. But there are some things, some good things that we're. we can point out, but also there was some old bugaboos that the Broncos still can't get over the

hurdle and we'll touch on those later. Yeah, let's start with the good, right? Because I think if we're going to take the game at face value, there was a lot of ugliness from the Broncos, like beyond the first. Like the defense's first drive was something and we'll kind of get into that. But again, kind of starting with the good answer to the question that I threw out there, I put this much stock as well. I know I said one to 10, but I'm with Sarah.

Like the outcome of this game means absolutely nothing to me. I understand. Like here's maybe a hot take. I don't know. Maybe it's lukewarm. This is probably the worst loss of Broncos are going to have all season. And I know it's the preseason, right? But like this margin of defeat like 33 to 13 where you're just not really in the game and it's uncompetitive.

And I understand it's preseason. But I don't see the Broncos assuming that Bo Nix is healthy and their defense is relatively healthy, losing a regular season game in this fashion as well. So hopefully this is the ugliest game we'll see from the Denver. Broncos, I'll be in the preseason throughout the course of what is expected to be an awesome year for this team. But yeah, like I said, let's focus on the good because all eyes were on Boe Nix. And Sarah, I think you said it very, very well. Like the way that we kind of saw Bo navigate the pocket. And I agree with you as well, Nick. I think he was like good and made some good throws.

But I don't think he was like 10 out of 10 spectacular, but he showed you everything that you wanted to see, right? The ability to, you know, shimmy in it around in the pocket, move the football under center, drop back to pass. We saw the Jalen Wattle connection on display. Not a perfect pass from Bo there on the reception to Jalen Waddle, but an absolutely dime piece of a pass to RJ Harvey. I think that was like a wheel route on the outside that led to the touchdown there for the Denver Broncos on that opening drive.

So two thumbs up for Bo Nix with respect to what we wanted to see. He finishes tonight. Six of nine with 76 passing yards a touchdown. And for those who care, a quarterback rating of 129. Again, I'm not putting that much stock into it considering he threw nine passes. But Bo tonight, I thought, looked apart especially when you compare it to what we saw out of Jared Stidham and Sam Ellenger later in the game. Yeah, and I think you obviously, you look at that six of nine, whatever it was, and it could have been easily seven of nine. Like, once again, I got the orange glasses on.

I thought Cortland Sutton got that towed down. So, I don't know. They said the play stand. So, I mean, that was a pretty close one right there. but I thought it was a good play, nonetheless, really good effort from Sutton on that play. But yeah, you kind of saw Bo testing the waters to a number of different levels. I guess I didn't, you guys were there maybe with the Eagles. I thought that 33 for the Packers was kind of coming over the top on that Waddle play.

And so Bo kind of put it back to where Waddle could come back for it as opposed to leading him out and getting him laid out by the safety. I guess we'll have to wait and see the all 22 on that one to find out. but I thought it was just a really, really good performance. And once again, one of the questions that we asked going into this game was, what's the relationship between Bo and Davis Webb going to look like? Well, week one of the preseason, opening drive for Jared Sidham, six plays, 60 plus yards and a touchdown. Week two of the preseason, opening drive for Boe Nixon, Davis Webb,

six plays, 65 yards, and a touchdown. And they went down the field with relative ease. I know there's no Micah Parsons, there's, no Javon Hargrave, Devante Wyatt. Who cares? Like we're asking these guys to go execute. It would have been held against them if they hadn't played well. So I think that obviously you evaluate what you can see. And like Nick said, you got kind of like a little teakaboo into the Jalen Waddle connection with Bo Nix. And these two guys really just getting on that same page is so essential. I love what we saw with some of the pre-snap motion looks. I love what we saw

with the play action looks. I like Jalen coming out of the slot on that big play that he had and the separation that he created. So there's so many just little pieces of each of these plays that we saw, well, little Jordan Humphrey, the catch that he made on the throw from Bo. That might have been Bo's worst throw that he had in the game and,

and little Jordan came through. So I thought it was just overall, you really get encouraged by something like that, knowing that JK wasn't out there, knowing that Marvin wasn't out. out there knowing that we still have yet to really see Bo get the tight ends involved. There's so much more. And yet I feel like so many new levels have been unlocked.

You know what? When I was thinking about, you know, what this night was going to be and why everyone was in the stadium wanting to see Bo Nix, I just look at it like this. Got to give the people what they want. That's kind of what it is because we wanted to do. see what this was going to look at, look like. It was, Sarah, you're right. I mean, we haven't seen Marvin Mims who had a great training camp and we hadn't seen them with all of the guys on the field. And what this is is that we're getting a kind of a glimpse into a puzzle, if you will,

a puzzle that has 5,000 pieces. And during this preseason, we're getting a little here, a little there. So just only building up the groundswell of anticipation of what is could actually look like if you got Jonah Coleman, you got RJ Harvey, who once again continues to prove that the past catching ability out of backfield. Come on now. I mean, I remember last year, remember Drake Greenlaw was in the same coverage,

in the same end zone with Josh Jacobs, and he had great coverage, just like the Packers linebacker, and just like Josh Jacobs, RJ Harvey pulled in the catch. And let me go on a little tangent for just a second. Just give me just a moment here. Please.

Because there was a lot of criticism about R.J. Harvey and his lack of vision. So much so that had to add my input to someone else's tweet and breakdown of a play that criticized R.J. Harvey and the lack of vision, I had to point out, where in the hell was he going to run the ball? Because Mike McGlitchie was being destroyed. The fullback was being destroyed. And the alleged hole that was said to be there, guess what? it wasn't there because Troy Franklin didn't block well.

Evan Ingram didn't block well. But I'm glad that we were able to see a bounce back play like this from Arjun Harvey just to let people know what he's capable of. Now, is he a complete back? No, by no means. But is he a bum? No, he's not. Right. And to reference a Ray Charles when describing him, I think that's a little unfair saying as though he liked that type of vision.

now when I digress and I come back. But you know what? This was great to watch the Broncos and bow nicks go out and execute. And I got to tell you, man, I can't tell you when the last time I've been this excited for the start of the season and just say, man, what is it going to look like when they have all the arsenals loaded in the chamber, man? I'm freaking excited. I seriously can't wait. I mean, like the RJ Harvey stuff, I completely agree with you, Nick. I think that we've kind of brought this up recently, but like everybody's looking at Jonah

Coleman as this shiny new toy, you know, and I get that. I understand that. And I think what, what's happening is, is that people are looking at Jonah Coleman and they're saying, hey, Jonah does everything pretty well. And he's really good at a couple of other things. but he's very much more so in the mold of the traditional running back, where on an every down basis, you can ask him to do the traditional running back things.

And because he's pretty good at all of those things, it makes people feel like they have to say, well, now I don't like RJ Harvey because he's not great at all the things or he's not really good at all the things. He's only really good at the one thing. He's great at the one thing, by the way. He looked like an NFL. wide receiver at the one thing.

But what he doesn't do well at this point, JK does exceptionally well and Jonah does pretty well. Right. So it's like, okay, well, I want the two guys that do the traditional stuff well. But RJ to me is,

I mean, I know fans hate the word. So I won't say it, but he's got his wings, right? He's got the wings. I think this was the play that proved. I can't tell you how many times I've made note of,

and I said this in the post game, how many times people have said at camp, man, RJ or somebody on a wheel route at practice at training camp. And now we see it in a game. And I think Sean and Davis are like, okay, because what can this do for everybody else in the offense? We talk about what Jalen can do for so many other guys. But what can RJ do for everybody else in the offense if now a defense is saying we have to

circle number 12 every play because if he gets behind the defense down the sideline, the Broncos are getting an easy touchdown because he catches everything. So I think it's just once again, we're peeling back more and more layers. The players are developing before our eyes. We're seeing the growth. We're seeing the progression. It's really good stuff, man.

And I know it's the preseason, but we're evaluating plays. We're evaluating situations. We're evaluating what did the guy do last year versus what is he doing now? I can't wait. Like you said, Nick, with the full arsenal at your disposal. Yes.

That's what it's all about, man. Yeah, I think RJ has, you know, just about as much upside as anybody on this, this offense at the skill position, right? I'm excited to see what he's going to blossom into this year. He was very effective, right? Especially in the passing game last year. It's the rushing attack that you want to see him kind of refine his craft. But again, it's like a healthy JK Dobbins kind of takes a little pressure off him.

Jonah Coleman being a true rusher takes a little pressure on him. And speaking of the full arsenal, man, like I know it was one play. And we know Marvin Mims has speed too, but like when Jalen Waddle caught that ball over the middle, it just kind of had that little burst. Like I was like in my chair in the press box. And I was like, oh my gosh, we haven't seen that in a long time, right? And it's like I'm like watching the highlights, like tweeting it out. Like that to me, again, we're talking about a sample size that is that is this big outside

of what we've seen from Jalen Woll in practice. But in the game like scenario, I mean, that was such a breath of fresh air. And hopefully just a preview of what's to come with opening up this offense. and we've talked about at large, like just what the Jalen Wattle effect is going to have, not just for Waddle, the player and his statistics, but everybody else on the offense, like the Sutton's, the Harbys, the Franklin's, like all of these guys. But for Waddle in particular, fellas, I mean, that catch and run, that yards after the catch and just that burst, that is what the Broncos has been missing for quite some time.

And that, once they unlocked that, man, I mean, giddy up. Like, Nick, you and I were, you know, critical of the Broncos last year at times, even though they were winning all these games left and right because we wanted those style points and wanted to see the offense look maybe a little bit more complete and play with the lead and not have to come from behind every single week. Like Jalen Waddle, in theory, is going to be the key to unlock all that. Aniloh, I'm glad you brought that up because there was a lot of criticism when I actually brought it up, especially in the press box.

And it was like, no, no, the Broncos don't need style points. I'm like, look, I know it's not a, it doesn't appear to be a big thing. but you do need some sort of style points to make a defense, opposing defense think that, hey, listen, these guys can go downtown whenever they want. And that's why everyone got so excited about the Jalen Wado, you know, trading, having him signing him, having him come here in the play itself, because the team has never had that level of explosion. Now, we've seen that from Marvin Mims, right?

Let me not get to our front of myself, but we've seen that from Marvin Mims, but it wasn't on a consistent basis because they didn't really play Marvin. And when it came to yak yards, the Broncos didn't have a lot of yak yards. I mean, there may be a 20-yard catch, but now it's a catch and now the guy's on the ground. It's not a catch and run, right? So that's why, let me take you back really quickly. Broncos fans are going to dislike this. Remember that game on Monday Night Football when Jerry Judy came back and he had all those big catches

and then he had to run after the catch. that's what everyone wanted Jerry Judy essentially to be here for the Broncos. But now we got another Alabama-wide receiver that we're hoping that would elevate Bow's game to now when we get these old wacky NFL top 20, top 100 players or quarterback rankings. Bo is now going to jump up there and be mentioned among the likes of maybe Lamar Jackson, Patrick Mahomes, and Josh Allen. I know that sounds crazy hearing me say that, but why can't that be? I believe that's possible. Yeah, it is. 100%.

I think it's very possible. I don't know why more people don't think it's possible. I don't know why more people don't see that in Bo Nix because of the high points. Like there was a there's a post that's been floating around that, you know, talks about his numbers over the first two years and how he's the only player in the first. two seasons of his career that it was him and Josh Allen were I can't remember the stat I'll pull it up and I'll bring it up later in the show but it was like the first column was him and Josh Allen and then the second column was like Bo Nix is the only player to have done it in his first two years or whatever but at any rate I agree with what you're saying Nick and did you also notice that Jalen Wattle play was

in the middle of the field where I think the Broncos have plenty more opportunities to exploit defenses this year because so often everything's getting just spread out towards the sideline and they don't have anything up the gut other than if Beau takes off against man coverage, right? So I think that for sure, like this is, it's, yes, a small sample. It's a very small glimpse, if you will, but that one play was every one target, one catch, 35 yards, like, okay, we see it, we get it, that's what it's going to be, that's what we expect it. Not every play is going to be 35 yards, we get that, but that's what Jalen brings to the table and why he can affect this offense so dramatically.

Yeah, I mean, you couple that with Davis Web and then play calling. Like, that's why, like, all due respect to Marvin Mims, like it's, it's very north-south sideline, like, as you kind of alluded to, Sarah, right? Or it's like the deep post route where he's running towards the corner of the end zone after he catches it. It just feels like there's this dimension that is yet to be unlocked with this Broncos offense that hopefully will play out in the regular season. So yeah, nice little sample size from the first drive from the offense in that one.

But when you lose 33 to 13, obviously not everything went so smooth. So let's go ahead and hit a break. When we come back, let's continue along with our breakdown of this game. It's weird because it's like I loved the conversation we just had. And I want to continue to have that conversation. But we also got to keep it a buck and talk about, you know, the ugly parts of this game here tonight, right?

When you lose a game 33 to 13, as I alluded to, like I could sit here and talk about Bo Nix and Waddle and upside of potential for three hours if we wanted to, right? But let's kind of keep it moving here and talk about the defense. Green Bay obviously strikes first in this game. And we got to look at the Broncos starting defense. for the most part in that opening drive. A drive, by the way, that took up, like,

the entire first half of the first quarter. I mean, in other words, there was penalties. Like, that was a long, long drive that results in some points for the Green Bay Packers. A couple of takeaways for me. Like, obviously, there's the Certan, fumble, not fumble. It seemed like Certan, by the way,

was almost trying to bait Christian Watson into making that type of a play. And, you know, Certan comes over the top. And away we go. Obviously, that ended up being called back. I did have some, I won't say concerns, but questions about the line. backer play. Alex Singleton looked a bit lost in space at times, I think is probably a fair way to put it,

which is nothing new for Broncos country. And again, it's the preseason. But for a defensive unit that we expect more from, pretty subpar opening drive, I would say, fellas. Yeah, Pat Sertan was kind of playing with his food out there, so to speak, wasn't he? He was ready for Watson to get the ball that one time and take it away from him, which I still say he did. But then he decked him at the sideline. That was a, that was impressive stuff, man. I mean, that's that Watson is what, six four, six five, two 20. I mean, he's a big guy. So that's pretty crazy that Pat was able to do that. But I look to me and I'll have to watch it back. It looked to me like there was a major miscommunication on that that last play that resulted in a touchdown for the Packers. And I could

see them communicating on the field. They're yelling at each other. They're trying to do hand signals. And then Dondrey Tillman ends up in coverage. I think it was on the running back, Marshawn Lloyd, for the Green Bay Packers. And it's like, well, okay, you know, on an option route, Dandre Tillman is not the guy that you want covering him. So what happened there? And why was nobody in the middle of the field for help, right? So I'm going to have to diagnose that one and kind of find out and see. That was a drive that I felt like should have been ended multiple times over.

I think the Packers converted one or two fourth downs, if I remember correctly. for sure one of them. So it was just a weird, like you said, like took up half the first quarter. It felt like they were kind of matriculating down the field, a couple of big plays. Matthew Golden makes a nice play. I mean, there's some of those plays where you look at and you're just like, okay, yeah, the Packers kind of got one there, right? But then there's others where you kind of say, wait a second, why did that just happen

against this defense? And we're not seeing all the stunts. We're not seeing all of the games from the defensive linemen. And so it's not like the Broncos are out there. And Vance Joseph is in the full bag against Jordan Love and the Packers. I think you, you know, get vanilla and you kind of give vanilla. You get vanilla in the preseason. But yeah, I agree.

It wasn't necessarily, you want to see them go three and out or force a turnover. And I thought the second play, they forced a turnover. And then ultimately, you know, it ends with giving up a touchdown. And you can have a sour taste in your mouth. Well, this was a great matchup, albeit the preseason for the Denver Broncos. I mean, last week, I don't want to call, I don't want to disrespect the Falcons and call them a J.B. team. But obviously, there was no competition facing the Denver Broncos. And you can tell by the depth on the Denver Broncos.

So there was a significant difference between it, too. Coming into tonight's game, I knew it was going to be a little different. Remember the last time these two teams met in the regular season, Green Bay Packers, I believe, they were nine and three, or something like that. But after they lost to the Denver Broncos, I mean, they lost like five games in a row. And remember the team that the play that turned the tie was a Christian Watson had ran a deep post. And if Jordan Love put more air on it, that would have been a touchdown. But he under threw it just a little. The timing was a little off.

PS2 got the interception. And that turned the tie in favor for the Denver Broncos. So kind of what we saw tonight was a mixed bag. And if you are Vance Joseph, you want to go back and you want to make sure you go over to find details of run fits because the Packers out rushed to Denver Broncos, right? Even before the second and 13 guys came in, they moved the ball and they moved pretty well. And that was an excellent test for the Broncos for what they're going to face to start off the season against Patrick Mahomes and Kansas City. So I love the fact of having the defense go through that stress and that strain. But going back to the play that you were talking about,

say as far as the confusion inside the red zone, we've seen that before from the Denver Broncos. Last thing, the guys were kind of looking around like who, who's got who. It looked like that Spider-Man gift where you had the two Spider-Man pointing at one another. And I had an idea that something was going to happen because anytime you get the quarterback in the shotgun and you take the running back and he's all right. offset, immediately defensively, your eyes have to go to him because what they did was they motioned to see who had him man to man. And there were no one really took him.

They just ran what we call the Texas route where it looked like he was running an arrow angle to the sideline and he broke back across the face. And I'm thinking, like, why is a de-leinman in coverage? Where is everyone else? And this, it was great game planning, right? Because usually in the preseason, we don't see a lot of game plan. and it was kind of vanilla. But this was that game that you knew that you were going to see a little game planning on both sides. And you got to tip your cat to Mike with Florida Green Bay Packers, man, because they came to play.

Yeah, 100%. And I want to know how is Riley Moss doing, right? Because I didn't get a chance to watch any of the postgame stuff. I know Riley left with a rib injury. He was listed as questionable to return. And then on the Packers broadcast, they said, and I don't know where they got clearance. to say this, but one of the people on their broadcast said that Riley would have come back if it was a regular season game. That was at the end of the broadcast.

They were like, no injuries tonight, right? And he was like, yeah, there's no injuries other than Riley Moss for the Broncos. And he was questionable. He would have came back and played if it was a regular season game. So I don't know. I don't know where he got that information from. But that, you know, I think that would be nice if it was true. But I don't, I have no idea.

Riley made an amazing play on that first. I think it was the first play of the game defensively. I thought he was going to take that one back to the house. The replay showed he wasn't quite as close to that as I initially thought. But that was another notch on his belt for this offseason for sure. So I hope he's okay. Have you got ever injured your ribs before?

Not to any sort of degree like that. Let me tell you that that's not a joke. We were playing Cleveland Browns really quickly during my career, and it was a punt return. I didn't see this guy coming. He could have cleaned my clock, but I saw him at the last second. He just brushed my ribs, right? He just brushed him. I took a knee right there.

That's how bad it hurt. So imagine what Riley is going through because when he went to recover that fumble, he jumped on it, and then guys jumped on top of him, right? So it's hard to breathe and expand your lungs because your ribs are going to hurt. So obviously, I don't think he's going to play in this last game. And even it was a regular season game, those types of injuries are hard to come back from. But also he gave a guy like Jaday Barron an opportunity to enter the game and play a couple of reps with the starting unit. Yeah, we saw Jaday get a good amount of run in this game, which is obviously to be expected here.

I just had this pulled up. I don't have the video in front of me, but I'm seeing the one word quote from Sean P. And that Riley Moss is doing good. So whatever that means, right? Yeah. Here's what I will say. I think I've seen enough from Riley Moss in a good way. Like, I don't think he needs to play.

I think he's been one of the stars of training camp. I think obviously, like you look to that first play that he made in the preseason game today. Like, I don't think he's all that banged up again. That's just pure speculation on my point. I would think that if it is, you know, regular season, season game or a playoff game. He's probably coming back into the lineup if he, you know, feels like he's going to be able to. But I think Riley's shown me enough to solidify his spot where he is on the roster. But yeah, I mean, you know, for the starting defense, and we'll

kind of get into what Sean Payton had some overarching thoughts about the team here back on the other side of the commercial break. But the miscommunication, like if there's one red flag that I take from this game with the starting defensive unit, it's that. Just because like when they brought back J.K. Dobbins, right? It's like, okay, like he's healthy. is taking another step. You draft Jonah Coleman. Like we get it, right? And I know Red Murdoch, I believe, was the leading tackler of the game tonight. Yeah, he had seven total tackles, one solo. I think Red Murdoch has potential to be a really good linebacker at some point in his NFL career, but you're talking about the definition of a raw

prospect. It's the depth behind Singleton and Stannot that still has me a little worried about this Broncos defense. And look, with their pass rush and their secondary room, they might be good enough to compensate for that. But just seeing some of that miscommunication, Alex Singleton, like, dropping back in the end zone and that touchdown play and just all of the pointing of fingers and everything that kind of went on before that. Like that's a lot of the same stuff that we saw last year. And so I'm not trying to blow it out of proportion, but that's one of those things where it's like I'm probably writing that impen in my notes about a takeaway from this game.

Yeah. And it's something that they they have to figure out because it was Alex specifically who was earlier this training camp talking about how all these guys pretty much are in year three of this defense. and they're not like learning something new. They're out there kind of perfecting it. So the irony of having a miscommunication like that in the, you know,

a preseason game, it, it allows you to eat a slice of humble pie at no charge, right? It's like here, here's a free slice. You know, it's like samples at Costco. It's like you can try this.

There's no consequence. You don't have to buy it. You don't have to buy an entire box of this. Just try it right now. Have this slice of humble pie. And, And I think they need that because that's what, I see we have it in our kind of show notes here that Sean was not happy after the game.

I think these little mishaps can really work to the advantage of a team like this, where like you said, in ELO, they probably aren't losing games like this throughout the course of a season. So this serves as a, okay, this is our big teachable moment, right? So that's something that I definitely want to talk about as we get into it. but for Singleton and the defense, it's that slice of humble pie at no consequence that can really help them in the near future. But this is why guys, you know,

a couple of fans are maybe a little frustrated because from week one to week now, there's a significant difference, right? Like statistically, looking at Jared Stenham and what he was able to do in that first game, it was 9 to 15 for 131 yards in the touchdown. The difference of that 133,000, to one yards, 40 yards on one play to Cortland Sun.

His stateline tonight was 9 to 15, 82 yards, and an interception. So you saw somewhat of a drop in production. And it started to make certain fans think, well, okay, well, what kind of team is it that we do have? I mean, can you beat up on a team that you know that's a little deficient in Atlanta, but then you come back to a team that everyone's thinking that they're going to really compete and within their division and you don't perform well. Now, once again, watching, you know, Joy and Love and Bow Nix, man, you wanted to see it, man.

It was almost like a heavyweight fight, if you will. And just think about it if it was a regular season game, I mean, last season, I mean, I mean, the game that they had last season, it was just like it went to the wire. So that tells you what both teams can actually do from an offensive standpoint. Yes, there's some things that the Broncos need to kind of tweak his. here and there. But the positive side going back to it, and I really want to make sure I highlight that is that you have an offense and they showed you that if everyone is healthy, that the offense for the first time can match the defense from a production standpoint. And that's

something we haven't seen around here in a couple of years. It's true. Absolutely true. Let's hit a quick break. Hope everyone in Broncos country is doing well out there, having a good time, enjoying what we saw from Bo Nix and getting excited for the regular season. I'm so pumped up tonight, man. Like I've loved the offseason conversations we've had. Like I really like nothing against those, but it's like to kind of get our chance to start syncing our teeth into something real and tangible and looking forward to this regular season. Like, I can't wait. Like just being at the stadium

even today, like the energy's back and everything that kind of comes with that, man. I'm pumped up for this season. But obviously kind of in a micro for tonight, fellas, it was a right front at the office, right? There were some bright spots as we've talked about with Bo Nix and Jalen Wall and R.J. Harvey. But Sean Payton, after the game, was

not happy. Here's a quote from Sean that I'll read for you guys. He says, quote, obviously, that wasn't good enough. Just pick a topic. Pick penalties, kickoff return. We lose that battle. Rushing numbers, we lose that. And we can't just say, quote, hey, here's, or hey, this is preseason two.

Each phase saw their share of what ended up being the final score. He goes on to say, you can't not pay attention to these games, these scrimmages, these important steps towards the start of the regular season. And he also goes on to say that, you know, he's considering wanting to play a start as much deeper now into this final preseason game. So we'll ultimately see what Sean wants to do. And look, we've talked about, like, Sean's is about his throwback of a head coach as you can get in the modern day NFL. Like one of his big buzzwords at the podium and training camp is callous, right?

Like he's a big believer in the callousing of the player leading into the regular season. So we'll see just how much they do end up playing in this final preseason game. But I don't have a problem. I don't think anyone should have a problem with what Sean Payton had to say tonight. I think all operations really outside of that first drive from the Broncos's offense. And we'll get into the backup quarterbacks too, like left a lot to be desired, fellas. Yeah, no doubt. I mean, obviously there's winners and losers in every preseason game, especially when you get smoked the way the Broncos did. I was going to say shellacked, but you know, we've got to pick one of the words. Can't use both. I just did though. But yeah, I mean, it starts with the return game. It starts with special teams. Like that to me is where I took the biggest issue in this game because you had a 68 yard kickoff return. You had a 16 yard punt return. You had a kickoff out of bounds. And then Jeremy Croshoff, shanks won. late in the game as well.

And what does Sean Payton talk about with special teams? He talks about hidden yardage. That's the type of stuff that over the course of a season, you know, you can't have those types of errors. You need to be elite on special teams. And that's what Darren Rizzy was hired to do to make this special teams unit elite.

He can't be out there playing for the players, obviously, but you got to coach it up right. And you got to make sure your guys are out there making plays. Somebody's got to be held accountable. I mean, the buck stops somewhere, right? So Rizzi is supposed to be one of the best special teams coordinators in the NFL. I think we've seen a mixed bag of results from his special teams units to be fair over the last couple of years.

I think the Broncos lost in the trenches on both sides of the ball after the starting O line left the game. You got pushed around on the D line. You got pushed around and you made too many mistakes on the O line. Didn't like seeing that. Like Sean Payton said, you couldn't run the ball. And they were running kind of all over you, especially late in this game. So that's the type of stuff that you don't want to see and that's the type of stuff that will drive a coach crazy because you understand like those are the things that it's not the it's not giving up a big fluke play over the corner or something like that. It's not giving up a, you know, whatever.

It's the little things like that, special teams, tackles, you know, winning in the trenches, all the things of Broncos that they've invested in to make this team raise like raise that proverbial floor, right? well, when it doesn't work in a preseason game and you think you have best depth in the NFL on the D-line, especially, that's a little bit of a concern. Now, which one of the Broncos coaches would you want to be at this particular moment? Because I wouldn't want to be. None of those coaches. I mean, you know he's going to go ham. I mean, he's going to just let's lose because you just had a lopsided victory. You held the Falcons to like seven points.

Now you come back and you only score 13. It's 33 to 13. At home. And just think about it. This is the first time we've seen the Denver Broncos since they lost to the New England Patriots. Right. So the last time, two times we've seen them, the Broncos have taken L's. Sean knows what this actually means because he wanted to have the Broncos go out there

and do the same thing against the Paco's. that they did against the Atlanta Falcons. But that's not what happens. But this is the best thing that could have happened to the Broncos, believe it or not, because you want to take a butt-whippant, a belt to, you know, you know what. So you know what you need to do

when you come back here against the Jacksonville Jaguars in the regular season and make sure that you take them to the woodshed because, oh, by the way, that's another team that beat the Broncos at home because the Broncos were 7 and 0 until they faced Jacksonville, and that was the only home blemish on their record. So Sean knows what it is. And what he's feeling right now, gentlemen, is the four walls starting to close in and we're not even in the regular season yet. Yeah, you know, I throw this out there just because I think it's interesting. Like the Broncos were, I believe, six and a half point favorites tonight. And I think a lot of that had to do with the depth or the perceived depth they have of a lot of these positions.

And it's obviously interesting to see it go so far the other way with the Packers winning 33 to 13. And look, I hate to put it all in the quarterback play because the defense was not very good tonight. And the secondary, like, you know, the second straight. We talked about the starting unit wasn't great. The second unit wasn't great. The third unit wasn't great. But like we got to talk about the quarterbacks here for just a moment. I mean, Jared's did him tonight 915, 82 yards passing quarterback rating of 47.1.

Ellinger only had two pass attempts. He was two for two for 10 yards. And maybe this is more about Stidham than it is Ellinger. Their backup quarterback room is just extremely mid, guys. Like that's just kind of where I'm at with this. It's like the Little Caesar's pizza, bro. Like, you know, you go to Little Caesars. Like, I don't know if you guys are being Little Caesars fans.

Like, you know what I'm saying? I'd much rather go to Domino's or some of these other places. I'm going to get a fast casual pizza. It's like Little Caesar's pizza, like you open up the box. It looks good and it's not so good. And I'm just kind of like so sick and tired. of this like belief or you know forcing of the belief rather in Jared Stidham. And I say that because I also don't know how much it matters because we've talked about

on this show how if Bo Nick goes down for any extended period of time like they're probably cooked like, you know, insert quarterback not named Nick Foles that is going to come in here and lead this team, you know, the prosperity and a backup caliber. I know Sean has a good record with this kind of stuff too, but it's like Stidham week one, great does his thing, Stidham week two, not so good. Ellenger, let me throw this out here too. And by the way, like, this is just a conversation of having folks at the radio station and things that I was

overhearing in the press box today, too. Like, if you're Sam Ellenger, like, wasn't the whole idea of like this backup quarterback situation, like to be like a competition and competitive? Like, it seems like Jared Stidim is being given every single opportunity to lose or not lose the backup quarterback rule. And if you're Sam Ellenger, and maybe he loves Denver and he loves Boe Nix and all that kind of stuff as well,

like, is he maybe kicking himself for not going to Indianapolis? last year and having an opportunity to put some game film on tape and everything that kind of comes with that too. Because at this point, I'm just convinced the backup quarterback room is what it is. It'll be Bo one, Stidham, two, Ellinger three. For Ellinger not to get a fair shot so far on the preseason is kind of baffling to be, fellas. Yeah, I'm wonderful. We'll see him in week three of the preseason get reps ahead of Jared Sidham because he's got to. He's, you would think so, right? I mean, Jared, the way that he played against Atlanta, after all the talk during, training camp, it was kind of like, okay, well, that's over because Jared hit throws to Evan

and Troy and Pat and three to Cortland. Like he threw the ball pretty darn well in that game. Like, a lot of explosive plays. And so you're kind of saying, okay, well, he kind of ended that QB2 debate. But a performance like the one we saw against Green Bay sort of opens that discussion back up because now all of a sudden that $4 million in savings, the cap savings, starts to look a lot more appealing when your backup quarterback goes out there and throws a really bad interception. I will say, though, I think that the receivers didn't necessarily do Jared many favors. And I think the officials did him a really bad, you know,

when they didn't call pass interference to pass to Dane Key. That was a good decision by Jared to kind of, you know, throw it underthrow it a little bit, let Dane Key come back. I thought he got interfered with on that play. I also thought he hit little Jordan Humphrey in the chest on what should have been a touchdown. I thought he hit Hakeem Butler for what should have been two touchdowns as well. So maybe you look back at some of those plays and, you know, the coaching staff is like, that's on the receiver.

That's on the receiver. Should have been a penalty here. But it's the woulda coulda, shoulda game. And the interception looms large over the perception of Jared Stidham right now. And yeah, Sam Ellinger didn't get any opportunities in this game. I mean, that was, that was pathetic. Like when the Broncos' backups on offense were out there, you expect the operation to look at, you know,

a certain degree after what we saw against Atlanta. And that was disappointing for sure, the run game especially, but not throwing any passes, once again, barely getting the tight ends involved. At least we saw Justin Jolie, you know,

get a couple out there. But, man, it was just when you're trying to evaluate, this is not what you have in mind. No, you're absolutely right, Sarah. And I just wanted to applaud Anillo for saying what he said because he was definitely spot on. And no one wants to think that there's a self-savitage of Sam Ellinger, but I don't know what other way to look at it because if you knew that Bo was not going to play in the first game and you were going to give Stidham the ability to play with the starters,

okay fine. I thought, okay, once Bow went out, then they were going to balance it off and put Sam in the game. So you have equal evaluation. That's not what they did. And then they continue to give Stitty five drives. Here's the crazy part about the game of football. There is a bias that takes place. And if there's someone that pound the table for a particular guy, they're going to make themselves more right than wrong. So what Stiddy is, basically experiencing something similar to what we've seen from, you know, first round picks. See, those guys have the privilege of having a massive opportunities not to succeed, but to fail. And there's a difference in the two. So Stidham has been given time and time again to just say, okay, well, maybe this is going to be the play. Maybe this is going to be

the drive. So say if the coaches are now saying, well, blaming the wide receivers for some of those passes, those back shoulders. I'm like, man, don't do that. Don't blame those receivers. I mean, on the one back shoulders pass on the left side, I can't remember who he was throwing to, but Steadie had a clean pocket, right? They off the line did a great job. But when you look at Sam, even though he went two for two for like 10 yards or whatever it was, man, that dude was under duress. It was one time he was actually set and he just kind of did one of these things and got out of it and got the ball back to the line of scrimmage. And those are the things in the plays that I feel as though Stidham can't really give you.

He doesn't give you those type of plays. So if things wind up, Bow 1, Stidum 2, and Elegant 3, I'm going to say, man, hogwash, man. That's a bunch of cow chips because you didn't really give him a chance. And remember, when Sean was pressed about the quarterback, backup quarterback competition, and this is me paraphrasing, he said, What competition? There's no competition. And you can't be a competition if you lean heavy towards one guy opposed to the other.

Yeah, let's hit a quick break. Let's pick up where we left off, though, after the break. Because I think there's a couple more things that could be said on the backup quarterback room and also kind of feed in some other big picture of thoughts here from this game. So we'll do that. All right, final segment here on your lockdown Broncos squad show reacting to the thumping that the Green Bay Packers put on Denver 33 to 13.

final score in that one, just to pick up where we left off there with the backup quarterback situation. Like, we know who Jared Stidham is at this point, right? And I think I also, like, I don't think Sam Ellinger is like better necessarily. Like, I don't really know what Sam Ellinger is, right? I understand, like, in theory, Jared Stidham probably gives you a little bit more, but it's like Jared Stidham isn't exactly wowing you. Like, I'm at the point, Philas, like, I don't really care if it's Stidham or Ellinger. I don't know if keeping all three makes a lot sense. And obviously there's a cap hit that comes with it as well. Like they're not going to, like there's two backup quarterbacks in mind that I think would be legitimate upgrades.

It's Marcus Marriota and Washington. I'm not sure where Jimmy Garoppolo is at this point in time. I don't think Denver's getting either one of those guys. But point being, I say that to say this, I would rather keep one of Stidman Ellinger and go get me Tayson Hill. Like seriously, I'm at the point here where it's like you're, you kind of just got like these two dudes in the room that are both mid as I was saying earlier. And I don't mean that like in a personal way or anything like that, but it's like they don't really do anything for me. And I think in particular with Jared Stidham, like, how many more opportunities are you going to give this guy? And I've been a little bit of a Jared Stidham defender because I know a lot of people in Broncos country just are down on him because

of what happened to the AFC championship game. I think that's extremely unfair because name me another backup quarterback that's still playing in the NFL that's going to come in here and win that game for Denver. And I understand that Stidham didn't have to do all that much. But like it just feels like you have two guys that do the same thing, right? Instead of Mellinger. Like, the results are going to be similar regardless of who's getting those snaps that they have to come into the game in an emergency setting or in a pinch in a starting setting as well, that it's like to me, like, why have two guys that do the same thing when you can get a Tason Hill that at least has some upside and could do this or that? Like, I don't know. I'm kind of over this backup stuff.

Yeah, but Nilo, you don't know what Sam Ellinger could actually do. We haven't seen it. It's kind of like the whole Marvin Mims thing. I mean, it's a little different. But, But the similarities are that they were not putting Marvin in so we can actually see the full gamut of what he's capable of. But Sam, we don't know. And that's the unknown. That's why the idea is that they're kind of the same guy because we don't know what one guy can do. We know what Stidham can do because he's been a career backup. Like tonight was the moment that I was looking for Stidham to really grasp the offense and really show what he's capable of.

doing. And in this particular moment, even though it's preseason, he didn't do that. So for me, I have no faith in him. And that's why I'm like, hey, listen, even though we haven't seen a lot of Sam, give him an opportunity so we can, we can make a decision on who he is and who he isn't. And if we figured that though he's not and you want to roll instead him, okay, fine. Just don't keep three damn quarterbacks on the roster. And you got to take away from a skilled position, maybe another running back or DB, or maybe another. the wide receiver. At least just keep two guys.

But they need to figure this out. Yeah. And honestly, like what you just said, it, it's a preseason game, but it's an opportunity. And you had an opportunity to go out there and, like you said, prove that you have the command of the offense, prove that you can build on what you did against Atlanta. And prove, I think, more than anything to everybody else in Broncos country,

maybe he doesn't need to prove this to the staff. But I think he has to prove it to a lot of other. folks that the aFC championship game was a fluke because of the snow or the blizzard the craziness of that second half like you made one mistake in that game could have been avoided you know but the second half like that was kind of out of your control so what can you do with the opportunities that you got now you showed us all something against Atlanta and then against three bay it just vanished into thin air but it was what you said it was exactly that an opportunity and And when you have, that's what, that's what you got before you, man.

Like that's, that's all that it was. It's a preseason game. It's inconsequential for the season. It's inconsequential because of the score. But it's not inconsequential for the reasons that we like the preseason, that we enjoy watching the preseason, that there is drama in the preseason in that it's an opportunity. Hakeem Butler, a ball hits you in the hands.

You better catch that and score a touchdown. You're the UFL offensive player of the year. You get a ball. from Stidham that hits you in the hands and you have a chance to make that play or not make the roster. You have to make the play. If you have an opportunity to return a punt, if you have an opportunity to return a kick, if you have an opportunity to run the ball and you don't take advantage, that's what gets

remembered about the preseason because you were given an opportunity and you didn't do something with it. That's the whole, the whole origin story of Torell Davis, isn't it? right, the kickoff coverage in Tokyo where he just goes and decletes somebody in kickoff coverage. And it's like, okay, that was the opportunity that he had. He made the most of it. And then he was given more opportunities. So if you don't make the most of your opportunity, you're proving you're not worthy of more opportunities.

So that's now the AFC championship game and that's now a preseason game against Green Bay. That's proven when we need our backup quarterback to step up in an opportunity. he's not doing that. And so that's just, are you going to, you're going to pay $8 million for that? That's what I'm wondering. I just,

so I'm not trying to be overly critical of Jared. I know that he's such a value to that quarterback room. I know that he and Bo are awesome friends. I know that at this point, he's got huge relationships built with the whole coaching staff, probably a lot of other folks in that building. So I get the relationship aspect of it and the personal aspect of it, but that's an $8 million cap hit.

for a team that, you know, you've given a guy opportunities and it's not coming together. Man, bump that sayer, man. I got a lot of friends. I got a lot of friends. But if my friends are not playing well and I want to win, hey, man, we got to let you go. That was the one thing that Mike Sannahan told me after, you know, both of us were retired, that when you work in the front office, yeah, you want to establish a culture. But at a certain point, you have to make sure that there's a. separation of emotions from the people on the first floor to the people on the second floor, right? And you don't want to say, okay, well, this guy's my buddy and, because it's going to

make it really difficult to let that guy go. And listen, I like the idea of the quarterback room and how close they are. But at the same time, you're trying to win freaking football games, right? You're trying to win football games. And you need to know, do you need to keep all three of these guys? Do you need to just keep just two or bow and whomever else or do you need to go look for on another team and bring another guy in because these other two guys, they haven't really ascended to where they needed to send to. Hey, you know who just had a really good game last week in the preseason or might have even this week.

Our old pal, Zach Wilson had a really good game. Yeah, with the saints. Yeah, man. See, like, that's the thing. I'll go back to the two words that Nick threw out, right? It's like no faith. right and I'm sure we've all dealt with this at some point in our lives and our careers of like you know what's the old saying like relationships matter right like relationships do matter and relationships can get you a long way and sometimes because of the relationships that you have you can be blinded to you know some of the just details that kind of come of performance and all that kind of stuff and look ultimately here's reality like let's just hope and pray right like God bless bow nix let's hope he stays healthy because as I can like could could Stidimer Ellinger come in and bridge the gap for a game or two sure but like like if you're in a high leverage situation, like it's going to be, it's going to be wraps, right?

And I think ultimately, Mark drops us in the chat. I think we're at the point here where you can start to really ask yourself the question of, like, is the right backup quarterback on this roster currently? And I understand that Jared Sidham had a lot of, you know, brand value as a backup quarterback being, you know, the backup to Brady and then getting a starting nod in Oakland or Las Vegas and then now coming here and the price tag and just everything that kind of comes with that it's just so far through two preseason games. And I understand Jared was good against Atlanta.

It's just there's more to be desired at that position, right? And I think that that's a fair thing to say at this point. So ultimately we'll see what Denver does there. But before we get out of here, fellas, is there anything else that we maybe haven't touched on that you guys want to double down on with any big takeaways from tonight's game? Well, I had that stat pulled up. It was something to the effect that over the last two seasons, only Josh Allen and Bo Nix have 50 combined passing touchdowns and 10 plus rushing or receiving touchdowns.

Bo Nix is the only player to ever do that over the first two years of his NFL career. So over the last two seasons, only he and Josh Allen have done that. Over the first two years of a career, only Bo Nicks in NFL history has ever done that. That was the stat that I brought up earlier from Sleeper Broncos. That was the account that posted that. So, but I mean, crazy stuff, man. That's to Nick's point earlier of Bo entering that upper echelon of quarterbacks. I think there's a real shot that that can happen.

Hey, you know, before we go, I just want to talk about the only sack of the tonight. The only lone sack came from Q Robinson, right? And you want to see progression from a young guy like that. And you want to make sure and you want to see every single game. He's still working. on this technique. And if you go back and watch the play, it was one of those

mile Garrett type of swipes and just to get past the Packers tackle to trying to put pressure on the quarterback. But I also will say this, you know, Sayer, Broncos fans are not going to like what I'm going to say. But in the case of the PS2,

pull out, punch out, rip out, whatever you want to talk about on Kristen Watson, the knee did touch the ground. Like the left knee did touch the ground. So once that player is touching the ground and the defender player is now making contact when that happens and the ball comes out, then now puts that guy on the ground. So that, yeah, so that was legit. The one with Corley Sutton, man, I got to go back and watch it.

That was right there. It was, yeah, man, it was, oh, man, it was close, for real. So I have to go back and watch that one. but Christian Watson was definitely down. Not to pile on the Broncos anymore, but I forget the name of the receiver for Green Bay, just as a sports fan, as a football fan, that touchdown catch that the receiver made on Jada,

A, there with the toe tap, similar to the Coral and Sutton play, but they eventually, they confirmed it as a touch. That was a sweet catch, man. That was sweet. I mean, the dragging of the foot. Now, if it was on turf, we would have seen those little grinding up tires. The specs. Yeah, or whatever.

but that that that was a great a great catch by that kid yeah I think that was Colorado guy uh will shepherd I think that was uh was it will shepherd yep pretty shame on me shame on me wow okay I should have known that he bought he had a great game 82 right 82 for the packer at a really good game yeah really good game wait a minute wait will shepherd actually was uh in the broncos training camp last season. And really, those are the takeaways you should have that will be applicable to this team in the regular season.
