We've got some thoughts about the first preseason game, a thumping of the Atlanta Falcons, which you love to see, kind of some stuff to read into, some stuff, maybe not so much.

And what does that mean moving forward into the second preseason game, which is to a certain extent, kind of like the last meaningful preseason game. Like I know like the third preseason game sometimes can get a little bit wacky, so we'll have some fun with that. and there was a fight, as Nick alluded to earlier this week in Broncos training camp. QB1 going to be on the field for the Broncos here as they take on the Packers on Friday night. And of course, I think that, you know, we get to see a little glimpse on Twitter of the reports of the connection, the deep ball between Bo Nix and Jalen Waddle.

But maybe the debut of Jaylon and, hey, I'm here for it. It's like I'm, you know what? it feels like finally we've crossed this threshold that previously had not yet been crossed. And that's kind of how I feel about it. I don't want to make a mountain out of a molehill, but I'm saying, you know, Super Bowl champs after hearing those reports, Nick, I don't know about you, but I mean,

but all seriousness, look, this was the connection we've been waiting for. Bo Nix to Jalen Waddle all offseason. Jalen had the injury earlier in camp. Now we get to hear about it at least. I want to see it on Friday night. You know what I say?

I'm with you. This is kind of one of those, like a Marvel movie, kind of anticipated. It's built up. Is it dooms day or not? And it seems like it's going to be doomsday for everyone else around the league, known as though you get a healthy Jayman Water, and you add that to Colin Sutton,

Marvin Mams, Pat Bryan, Troy Franklin. The list goes on and on. And because you have a list of that magnitude, I would say there are not too many teams out there in this 32 of them. I don't think there's 31 teams that can. actually say they're that deep at a multitude of different positions. So it's going to be exciting. I'm truly excited because the game last week against the Falcons, let's be totally honest. I mean, wasn't it really a game at all? I mean, no, it wasn't. So this is where the scheming is

going to start. And this is where we get a taste to see what Davis Webb scheming with a couple days to prepare for the Green Bay Packers, what that might look like. Yeah, I think the one thing I would say from just a general takeaway from the Broncos 27-7 victory over the Atlanta Falcons in week one is like guys that can kind of stack on what they did in the first game, right? And like that's really like Jay Leno's making the team, right? Like there's a lot of guys that played in that game that we know are like, you know, safe and sound that it's more so kind of just them getting loose and getting ready for the season, right?

But there's a lot of these other guys that are, you know, fighting for playing time or fighting for positions on roster spots and kind of everything that kind of comes with that. So I think there's almost a game within the game, right? Like, it's weird where, like, the final score of the preseason means this much. Like, if you go three and oh in the preseason, I think the Lions went like three and oh in the preseason in the year they, like, didn't win a game all those years ago. Like the outcome of these preseason games means nothing. But what happens kind of in between the hash is certainly does for a lot of these different guys,

fellows. Yeah, I mean, winning a preseason game is indicative of winning all those little games within the game, as you put it, you know, in my opinion, at least. I mean, when you're talking about winning matchups in the trenches, when you're talking about being the better team at rushing the past or creating more takeaways, you're running backs and receivers and tight ends all making plays, your quarterbacks operating the offense competently. Those are the games within the game of what a preseason matchup is.

And it should lead to, if you're the deepest team in the NFL, like I believe the Denver Broncos are, it should lead to more preseason games like we saw against Atlanta as opposed to some type of 38 to 45 shootout or a 16 to 10 barn burner or something like that, right? You should be kind of dominating these games because you are the more efficient operation. Your guys have been in these systems for years at this point, even some of your backup. So like we've got a bonus crossover episode, a preseason crossover episode that I think is going to be fascinating because what do we have with the Packers and Broncos? We have two teams that really emphasize internal player development.

They believe in their player development to the point that a lot of folks question their off-season moves. Like that's the case where all off-season for us in Broncos country, right, is why is the team not signing more free agents? Why are they not being more dressed in the NFL draft? Why are they not going up to this guy? Why are they not taking a shot at this guy? Because they believe in play development. And so do the Packers. And so you get a chance to see two coaching staffs.

going up against each other in a preseason game that are not only trying to get their feet wet and get ready for the regular season, but also they're trying to win those games within the game. Davis Webb wants to call a great game. Obviously, they want to see these receivers continue to create separation, make plays, make plays after the catch, the running backs, breaking tackle. So it's all those things that add up to, I think, yes, the score doesn't matter in the standings, but you want to see more of, I think the Broncos more than even a 27. seven sort of margin of victory in a game like this.

Yeah, you know, even though the score really doesn't matter and in the grand scheme of things, even the standings don't. What truly matters is how each guy competing for a roster spot, how they go out and effectively produce because you don't want, say, in week one, a guy performed well, he said, well, week two, did he disappear? Did he elevate his level of play? Because when we look at Jared Stidham and how Jared Stidham on that open and drop, move the ball down the field, had that big shot to Cortland Sutton.

I think it was like a 40-yard pass to put set the Broncos up on the one-yard line. When he gets in the game, can he duplicate that level of productions? Also, too, we saw Sam Ellinger come in in the second half. Now, if you put him with a better quality offensive line and better wide receivers, does his numbers look equivalent to that of Jared Stidham? So that is a competition battle, even though I know Sean Payton say, it's not a quarterback battle for number two spot. Yes, there is because if you keep three quarterbacks,

that means that some other skill group is going to lose guys. And usually what happens every single year, every single team, when you're looking, okay, well, where are we going to steal from to make sure we have enough offensive linemen, quarterbacks? You know what usually happens? The group that pays the most, DBs. They get us. We are the targeted guys.

So I would like the Broncos coming out of this Packer game to have an idea of who's going to be your true number two so we can keep more skilled players on the squad. Well, and it'll be interesting to see how they split the rest. We'll get into Bo and just kind of our hopes and expectations for him here on the other side of the commercial break. But it is going to be interesting because like we expect like Bo is going to play. The question is how much? Now, I don't few drives, like a half, like that kind of remains to be seen, right? But, you know, you're spot on when you're talking about Jared Stitt and like kind of getting a little bit more of a thing. hair shake is probably the way that I would put it. Like,

like, Corton Sut looked pretty good in the limited reps that he had, right? And, you know, what does Sam Ellenger have, you know, to kind of work with out there? Like, that's obviously something they consider here ultimately. So we'll see kind of how the Broncos play the second half in particular of this second preseason game. But of like notable guys in the first one, you know, that made an impact. Like Stidham, you know, was doing Stidham things in the preseason, 9 to 15 for a buck 30 and a touchdown.

Obviously, Jaday Barron is a guy that, you know, has a lot of hype from Broncos country because of where he was drafted. and we saw the interception, the runback that kind of came with that. That to me, of the guys that are like looking to prove themselves, for lack of a better phrase, because Cortland Sutton's a known commodity, right? Like, Jaday, Barron, and Jonah Coleman, those were the two guys that kind of jumped off the screen for me of like guys that played and had an impact, but also guys that we expect to play and have an impact for the team during the regular season, fellows.

Yeah, talk about proving yourself, right? I mean, Jonah Coleman is out there for four carries. I know he was out there for more than four plays, but for him to get pulled, the way that he did from that game. And then Sean Payton and Davis Webb as well now saying after the fact like, hey, yeah, we saw enough. And Davis even boiled it down to that one 13-yard run that he had where they get on the headset and he says, hey, guys, we're good.

Like we've seen everything that we need to see. So when you talk about young guys proving themselves, that is exactly what you want. Not necessarily that you don't want Jonah to get more run in the preseason because I think we would have all loved to have seen a little bit more of him playing. but at the same time, it's just as valuable to know that this coaching staff, what they've been seeing from him every day in practice, and what they've been seeing from him every day in the meeting rooms, that they just got confirmation from a few reps in a preseason game,

as opposed to saying, hey, we need to give him a heavy workload because the opposite end of the spectrum is what's happening out in Arizona, where Jeremiah Love situation is now in doubt for the start of the season because they've got him carrying the ball or touching the ball 14 plus times, in a game that doesn't matter after holding him out of the Hall of Fame game. So I think the Broncos have a correct approach to the way that they're doing this and the way that they're getting guys feet wet, getting them reps within the offense, getting them comfortable, getting them used to Davis Webb sort of orchestrating everything

as the play caller, as the offensive coordinator, personnel groupings, all these sort of different things. And Jonah Coleman guys, man, I mean, we talk about the hype being justified for a young player that's fun to watch man when when a guy comes through like that and how about on his runs to evan ingram with as the inline blocker or coming in motion and blocking guys like that really stood out to me so it just feels like firing on all cylinders is probably a bit too hyperbolic at this point but man the offense even with jarrott stidham they looked really good out there well and i don't want to make a mountain of a molehill right now or anything like that but just your

point about Evan Ingram, right? Like, because that's been one of the major talking points of training camp is like, okay, like he had a couple of, you know, stronger days to start, but like since then it's kind of been a bit wishy-washy. And like one of the points of emphasis that I've seen, I'm sure you've seen it as well, Nick, is trying to utilize Evan Ingram in the blocking game a lot more. Now, again, this is where I say I can't make a mountain out of a mohill because I'm not going to go crazy over, you know, a couple of plays in the preseason. But they're showcasing in that one game and we'll see if that continues to play over the course of the preseason into the regular season what they've been working on in practice, which I guess shouldn't be a surprise.

But it seems like it's a foregone conclusion amongst many people that just Evan Ingram can't block. And I mean, history kind of has shown us that to a certain extent. But that's a good observation by you as well, Sarah. Well, I say here's the thing for Evan Ingram. And I will just encapsulate the whole preseason in this whole phrase. Now you've shown me something. Now I want to see more.

Not less, I want to see more. And the issue with Evan Ingram is the same as the issue has been with the Broncos tight ends. They don't do a great job of blocking. When Adam Trotman is your best pass run blocking tight end, that's a problem. And I can tell you if you watch this technique, it is not the best in the league, right? It needs to improve. But now that you've shown and you put it on tape, and that's the all big part that's so important. once you put it on tape, this is why the preseason is so important, you put it on tape,

that's what we expect from you. So now we need to see Jared Stenham. We need to see Jonah Coleman. We need to see Evan Ingram start to put back-to-back games together to build that confidence. And Sarah hit on something that I think is true. It's confirmation. You want to know when you watch a guy from a draft standpoint, and you go through the process, and you watch him in OTAs and training camp and, you know,

everything else. Okay, well, can he take those things to the field and can he actually do them at a high level? And this is why the Broncos decided to pull Jonah Coleman because they felt as though, you know what, that's all we need. That's all we need. We're not going to have a situation with Mike LaFloor and Jeremiah I love like Sarah said. We just want to make sure that the young running back can go out there and play like he's a veteran. Now, there's one part of his game or I want to say his game, but there was one playing the game that from a young standpoint, I would like to see him improve. This is how

you stay on the field. It's blocking. When Jared Stedham with a step up and throw a deep pass, it ended up incomplete. But when Jonah stepped in, he ducked his head. When you duck your head, you allow a defender an opportunity to swim you. So if he can stand in there two feet

down and use his hands and punch that guy in the chest, now Stidham can throw that ball. That's part of his game that I like to see. as we get to the Packers game on Friday, have them put him in that position again and seeing if he's learned from week one or week two. Yeah, because the Broncos

want to trust him in those situations when Bo Nix is out there, right? They want to be able to say, hey, we're going into two minutes. We can have Jonah and Harvey on the field at the same time. We can send Harvey out for a route and Jonah can stand in and block or whatever. You know, it could be any sort of situation, any number of situations, I should say.

And so you want to be able to trust him in those in the big spots. This is a two minute drill or we're kind of in a hurry up mode and we need you to come in there and pop somebody in the chin, right, in pass protection and make sure that Bo has enough time to get to this longer developing route because that was the other thing that I noticed about the preseason. A lot of downfield throws, guys, a lot of stuff designed to go downfield, which is really exciting. A lot of stuff, as I know Nick has been calling for, under center. I think I charted eight on the first two drives, eight under center plays for Jared Stidham. compared to six shotgun plays. And so that doesn't necessarily mean, hey, in the regular season,

they're going to do exactly the same thing. But I think when you start to see play action from Undercenter on the first play of the game, first pass play of the game, I should say, and to Pat Bryant, who created a ton of separation, which is another great sign to see. It's just once again, that word, I think, keeps coming back to me is confirmation, the confirmation of what we felt was missing from this Broncos offense.

what we felt Davis Webb could do to close those gaps and the players on the team already that they were banking on and saying we're not going to go after another tight end. We're not going to go after another veteran running back. We're not going to go after X, Y, or Z. We're going to let our guys continue to grow in the system and let Davis be the one to kind of be the puppeteer and the mastermind of it all. It was a game full of confirmation, one little confirmation here, one little confirmation there. So I don't think it's making a mountain out of a mole hill by any means, like you said,

but I think it is one of those things that's like, hey, there's now enough evidence even after just one game for us to be able to say, hey, the things that we've been calling for for the last, you know, six months or so, the Broncos have maybe been on that same page. No, I think that's fair, right? And for me, it's more so like the balancing act. I think you hit it square on the head, right? Like it's that C word, that confirmation that we've been. looking for from this Broncos team.

And I think what Nick said, you know, at the beginning of the show is true. It's like, okay, we've seen it, but we want to keep seeing more and build and build and build. And that's what I think this, you know, matchup here in week two of the preseason is going to be all about against the Green Bay Packers. And so obviously there's going to be one key difference. And that is Bo Nix is going to play in this game, which I know we're all excited for. So why don't we had a quick break? When we come back, let's talk about Mr. Nicks and what the expectation is for him.

He had some thoughts earlier this week as well about having the opportunity to have Davis Webb in his ear for the first time as a play caller. So that is the one major difference for the Broncos and maybe Jaylen Waddle as well. Well, come on back into your lockdown Broncos Squatcho and Ilo Piro, Sarah Pettinger, and Nick Ferguson hanging out with you guys on this Wednesday, getting ready for the Broncos, second preseason game against the Green Bay Packers, their first home game of the preseason. I know there's a lot of expectation for this matchup. And excitement, rather, I think is probably a better word just because of number 10 being on the football field, right? And I think obviously we're all excited to see the first preseason game because it was our first opportunity to see the Broncos back out there on the gridiron in quite some time.

But knowing that Bo Nix is going to be out there, knowing what they did in their first preseason game, Davis Webb, kind of everything that kind of comes with that. fellas. I'm excited. I'll be there. I'll cover it for us here. We'll talk about it after the show, or after the game, rather, excuse me as well in your lockdown Bronco squad show. I cannot wait to see what Bo Nix looks like in his kind of first look in this Davis web offense. I can't wait as well. I mean, just in terms of everything, right, from the calls coming through his, you know, head to execution, to how Bo organizes things with Davis calling the plays. I mean, it is, it's going to be really a good I guess sort of dress rehearsal is the only way that I can really think to put it for Bo because I hope we kind of don't see him in third preseason game.

I don't know how the Broncos will approach that, but you kind of want this to be his one like tune up before the start of the regular season, at least for me. So, but I think that is the first storyline to watch for is what's the relationship between those guys look like? How does it kind of feel? Because I think honestly, Jared set kind of a high bar in the first preseason game, right? I mean, he did really well executing the offense, finding the open receivers, hitting guys in stride. Everything was balanced. Everything felt like it was just, okay, this is good. This feels right.

This feels like it could work. So I want to see Bo be able to do the same thing, even though he might be going up against, I don't know how many starters. The Packers will play defensively. It might not even matter necessarily. But you just want to kind of see that, I mean, well-oiled machine is once again, probably too far, but that's kind of what it felt like in the first preseason game with Stidham running the show. And Bo, I think you want to see him kind of do the same and certainly even better because

he is the starter. See, that's the biggest question, guys, you know, looking at what Stidham was able to do against the Falcons. And I know some fans are going to do it. Some pundas are going to do it. Some in the Denver media, they're going to do it as well because they're going to compare Bo's numbers in his first game to Stidham's numbers. And let's just say if Stidham's numbers are better, they're going to go, you know what? Maybe the Broncos should kind of reconsider this quarterback thing. And I'm going to tell those people, hey, go pound sand. Right?

Oh, man. I had threw that out there because I know how some of the fans and people in the media are going to talk about Bo and saying, well, you know, maybe that ankle is still a problem. So I'll ask you guys, and you guys in the thread, you know, you can chime in on this to too as well. based on what Jared did in the first preseason game against the Falcons. And known as though, Bo is coming off of this ankle. And everyone wants to know he is 100% healthy.

Now, we've been told by the organization, but people want to see with their own eyes. And we know Jared took a shot down the field. Will you allow Bo to do both types of things and take a shot down the field to Jalen Wado to start the game all? Would you do it? I would. I mean, why not, right?

You saw it in practice against Pats or 10. Take a shot. Take a shot against, I don't know, like I said, I don't know who's going to be starting for the Packers at corner. And actually, I don't even know if the Packers quite know just yet, because they have a rotation going on, the competition there. So why not take a shot? Bo next to Jalen Waddle, first play of the game.

That was what Bo said about Waddle that he brings to the table, right? Is that, hey, you're 65, 75 yards away from the end zone. This is a guy that can do it on the first play. And I believe it was another teammate of his that just said even on Wednesday after practice. Like you get him a five hours. Pat Sertant said you get him a five yards slant. He can go 75 yards to the house. I would say on the first play of the game, that's got to be the intention, right?

Bo Nix to Jalen Waddle. Let's see the connection right away because we saw. I mean, Cortland Sutton is regular season ready. We've seen Pat Bryant, Troy Franklin, those guys look ready. We need to see that Bo and Jalen can. be what everybody thinks that they can be. Bo taking that huge leap in year three and becoming a massive

big money contract player by the end of the year. And Jalen proving what everybody hopes he can be, which is that missing piece against the not against, but the missing piece for the offense. And so once again, in the preseason, I don't necessarily think

it really matters who you're going up against. I think it matters that you execute and that you do exactly what you're supposed to do regardless of whether it's a starters or whoever. I'm trying to pull up his previous stats in prior pre-season. ESPN's only giving me regular season and post-season. I can tell you this.

In Bow's first preseason game last year, and this is the only one of the three he played, the first game against San Francisco. He was 6 of 11 for 31 yards, no touchdowns, no interceptions, but he did have a safety, right? So that's all we saw, Bo in the preseason. and I left a lot of people saying scratching their hand, like, I don't know about this situation. But I know the Broncos need to find a way to showcase Bo and what however where they see fit with Davis Webb, because it's about style points.

We know that this is going to be the only preseason game that Bow plays in. So you want to make sure Kansas City and Coach Spags, they're thinking about Boe, right? They're thinking about, wow, man, you know what? we really have the game plan for the Denver Broncos and Bo Nix and he looks better than he was last year. So I'm hoping that the Broncos and Davis Webb, just give us something. If it's one shot, maybe on the third play, that's it. Take them out of the game. That's it.

We don't even see no more. Just give us one. Yeah, no, I'm with you. I'm with you. And the reason, like, I was curious and thank you for sharing that statistic there from Bo last preseason is like from what we saw in the regular season, like when it came to Bo, like it was usually, you know, a player that would get better as the game would go along, right? There'd be frustrating first quarters and frustrating first halves.

I'm sure there'd be some bright spots mixed in there, but like the best of Bo Nix would come late in games and comeback fashion and rallies. So like if we do get this two, three drive sample size, right? And maybe Bo Nix doesn't look so good. And he puts up numbers similar to what you just threw out there, Nick. Like there probably will be some people in Broncos country that are sent back like, oh my gosh, like Jared Stiddle last week. Like I think anyone that thinks Jared Stinnom over Bo Nix is is completely crazy. and I think the AFC championship game is proof of that. But, you know, the football fan out there is a different breed sometimes.

Like, to me, to be honest with you guys, the stats almost don't matter. It really almost doesn't matter. To me, it's like, does Bo look like he's moving okay, which he has been with my own two-eyes seeing him in training camp? Like, there's not a whole, like, Bo can go out there and be 10 for 10 with two touchdowns, and it could be one for 10 with hopefully no interceptions, but you know what I'm saying? Like, both ends of it. And I'm not really sure it's going to change my opinion. of Bo Nicks all that much. Like that's kind of where I'm at.

Yeah, it's, it shouldn't because I think he's done enough at this point to, I suppose you could call it sort of raising the proverbial floor for himself. I mean, what people thought he was coming out of Oregon, he is, he has proven to be a very different guy. He, he will attack downfield and he will do all the things that you ask of a dual threat quarterback. So I think Bo has kind of earned a maybe, maybe not everybody agrees with this, I think he's kind of earned that next floor in what we expect of him when it's regular season, right? And what we expect in him in terms of progression as a player, you don't necessarily need to see that in 14 plays during a preseason game. But you want to see him go out there, get his feet wet, do the same things that we saw from Stidham.

I want to see the play action passes. I want to see Bo Nix rolling out. I want to see him accurate and on time and hitting receivers in stride and hunting down the field. I want to see that he's seeing the field well. I don't really care about stats. I don't care that he goes out there and puts on a show for everybody. We just want to see that guy, that guy who's so confident that he's ripping Nick Benito off of a pile

and that he's, you know, drawing at the defense. Like that's the type of confidence that Bowenix has in himself to say like, look, I'm like I'm not the guy that's out here in a, you know, a bubble wrap for a preseason game. I'm not trying to get hit. I'm not trying to be reckless, but I'm going to be me. And I think that's what he's kind of been trying to prove at training camp, because I've heard his interviews and I've heard his press conferences,

and you could tell that he kind of thinks it's a bit laughable that this is still being questioned about the ankle and whether or not he's going to be okay. Like he seems to think like, just like if any one of us here knew we were completely healthy. And it was like people are questioning whether or not we were going to be healthy. You get that, right? I mean, from his perspective, it's like, this is really. ridiculous. Like I can still do and then some. Like he's even tried saying he might even be stronger. He's worried about being a little too fast out there. So I want to see just that

guy playing with confidence. I don't want to necessarily see him getting rattled out there. I want to see him playing with confidence, pushing the ball downfield, running the offense, everything just kind of humming along. I want to give you guys something to think about from a player standpoint and known as though you're a player coming off injury. And you've gone through the injury process and you feel mentally, you know, hey, and physically, I'm there. You've just slated and OTAs, minicamp and training camp. But I can tell you this personally from a guy that's had, you know, a couple of injuries, especially in low leg injury, you know, you start to think about it. And what both knees is the same thing I needed when I came back from my two knee injuries

is you need, you know, personal affirmation. You need to be able to go back on the field and hit that same area that your injury occurred in and go, you know what, I can mentally now break through that. So for Bo, as we talk about, you know, how good he looked in the training camp and practice, and this is going to be his first game, keep this in mind. This is his first return to Empower Field since that Buffalo game, right? So you got to think maybe there's a little in his mind. Obviously, he built up the confidence, but he needs personal affirmation that, you know what,

I'm going to roll out. I'm going to make this throw. The same throw or the same rollout, maybe different side of the field that I did in that Buffalo game, and I want to test out my ankle for myself. I want someone to put me on the ground. I want to stiff on my ground, whatever it is. So he can have that personal affirmation that, you know what? Now I'm good.

No, I'm not going to play in the last preseason game, but now I know, regardless of what everyone is saying, I have personal affirmation that I'm 100%. that's what that's what I'm going to be looking for on Friday to see if he mentally gives that to himself. Yeah. No, you're spot on. And I mean, I think that's the one thing more than anything Bo has to gain. And I guess maybe getting used to having Davis Webb in his ear, right? Like that's going to be a bit of an adjustment.

And Bo was talking about how, you know, Sean was very good at just, you know, getting the play in and not overcomplicating things and, you know, giving them some subtle reminders when he felt like he needed to. Davis similar, you know, I'd be able to keep things a little bit more loose and fun and just remind you that you are playing a game, albeit at the highest level. So I'm excited to see that. Here's a reality situation, fellas. And you said it perfectly, Nick.

And from the fan base, like, you guys both have kids. I don't have kids. But I was just with some family out on the East Coast. And I got, you know, a baby cousin who's like one year old. It's like when you're like, I would imagine like the first time parent, right? And you have your kid for the first time. And it's like you want to wrap the kid in bubble wrap. Make sure it's, you know, the kid's not crawl and the kid's not eating something.

He's not supposed to eat or see, like whatever might be. Like, that's how I feel like Broncos fans are where it's like they were so star for a quarterback for so long and you get this kid and Bo Nix delivered to you and he leads you to an championship game and then he gets hurt and it's like you you just don't want anything to happen to the guy, right? And so I think there's always going to be fair or unfair some level of anxiety, I guess, is the words you could use early on this season and the preseason and the regular season that, okay, he's good, right? Like he can ride the bike now, right? He can roll out on the ankle again. Like that's just kind of where I feel like we're at. But here's the one thing I can tell you and Nick can tell you as well.

He's looked great in training camp, right? And so I can understand the thoughts and the worry at times from the fan base. But the Bo Nicks I've seen in training camp this year from a mobility and a confidence standpoint, maybe not even, maybe more so confident than prior years. But point being is like his game has not looked limited in any capacity from the two plus weeks you've been out there. And I think that's as good of a sign and as good as a feeling you could have if you're a Bronco fan. Yeah, absolutely. And medium rare said it in the chat, right?

I mean, Bo has had this injury before. So that's the thing there. Like he's been through kind of this whole process of like, you know, the ankle fracture or whatever and coming back from that and getting back to game action. And yes, it's just shake off the rust. Go face that mental hurdle like Nick is talking about. And it's a great analogy to talk about kind of the fan's perspective in it of being like a first time parent is like you worry so much. And then the funny thing is like at the second, third, fourth kid you're like ah just whatever you know yeah they're digging around in the garbage no big

deal um so yeah it's like once you've kind of been through something or once we maybe get past i think everybody maybe more so the mental hurdle is from the fan basis perspective of seeing bow knicks out there again make a couple of plays in them everybody can collectively just uh just exhale a little bit right and so yes bow is going to go out there and do what he does and i think we're going to see just that extra fire in him because of what's all at stake this season and what he missed out on after getting all the way to the AFC championship game last year. You know, what's going to happen to? And I'm glad we're talking about the fan base and how they view this whole thing.

Everyone's going to be waiting with bated breath when both slides for the first time or he gets tackled. Everyone's going to be like, like that first, that newborn baby, right? That first baby type of thing, ah, you know, the baby fell on the ground. It's like, no, the baby's okay, right? Just dust yourself off and keep on going. And just like, you know, someone in the chat said, you know, Bo has had this injury before. Yes, I understand that.

But once you get to this particular level, it's different. And I can tell you personally, the mentality is different. And when you get an injury, you start to question, you know, can I still do what I did once before? Do I need to change anything about my game? And Anilo, you're right. We got a chance to see Bo at practice. and it seems as though he is back to being both.

And his level of confidence is out of the roof because he knows exactly what he was able to do in his second year and how close they were, right? Because they're not too many quarterbacks that put their team in this type of situation, you know, early on in their career. Like, you know, we got a chance to watch Joe Burrow do this for the Cincinnati Bengals after being injured in his rookie year, right? I mean, the precipice that the Broncos

stand on and Joe and I mean, not Joe, I mean, Bo Nick staying on. It is something extraordinary. I mean, he can do something that no other quarterback has done in Broncos history, not even John Elway. And even though Elway went to a Super Bowl, he backed it back to back. He didn't do it this early in his career, right? So there's a lot of pressure on Bo Nix, this organization, and this franchise, but like they say, pressure is a privilege. Spot on. Spot on. Speaking of Bo, Bo let's take a little time out, not from Bo, but from preseason conversation. Because I think if there's anything that speaks to the confidence of Bo Nix, it's what happened in practice earlier this week to kind of give you a little glimpse into the mindset of where

But I just so happen I'm on YouTube. Okay. Like, you know, I was watching like the 2003 NBA All-Star game at one point. And then I stumbled across all these old Mike Tyson fights. And by the way, like that is one of the best things you can do if you just don't know what to watch. Just go sit on your couch and pull up, you know, Tyson Holyfield, too. That's the bite fight. You know, some of the older Mike Tyson fights.

Those things are awesome to watch. And I'm a sucker for a good fight. I'm upset. I wasn't at practice yesterday because we got our first little scuffle. I believe the word that Sean Peyton used to describe it was tussle with the Broncos yesterday at practice. It involved Bo Nix, Nick Benito, Mike McGlintry, and something along the lines of Bo Nix getting knocked over. McGlach you didn't like that too much. Benito got that dog in them and kind of john back and forth.

reset the practice period. Something else happens. Benito comes out and away we go. So for the first time this training camp period, the dog days of summer, I believe is how some of the fellas put it on the practice field. We saw the emotions boil over just a little bit. So we got a little action,

a little rambunctious there from Bo Nix, Mike McGlenshey and Nick Benito. I personally love it. You want these guys going to war for each other. And I know it was a big talking point on social media. So going back just to the Bo Nix conversation we have. Like you think Bo Nix, He's not confident about the ankles and getting up in, you know, Nick Benito's face and doing this and that.

Like I think Bonix is great, but I also love the, you know, little energy you got from the team with the tussle yesterday. It just like when you have a strong relationship with somebody, you're kind of not afraid to like be yourself fully when they take you off. You know, it's like the person that you're closest to often gets the brunt of your frustration a lot of times or, you know, sometimes when emotions boil over, you have these huge arguments that can be. become really breakthroughs in a communication. And I think that that's something that for these guys, you overanalyze to a certain extent, right? But like for these guys out there, the heat of summer, they've been going against each other every single day.

They're competitive. They already, like the defense can't touch the quarterback. So like that's already frustrating enough for them. And then to get in trouble from the offensive line for not, you know, for accidentally touching the, like I can see why the tempers would flare and why the emotions would get fired up.

but I like that these captains, these guys on either side of the ball that are going to be mission critical to winning this, why they're so, it matters that much to them. I like it. I'm with you. I think that it's good for the team to see that fire. And once again, like Bo Nix, not just retreating and going away like, I'm going to avoid this conflict or I'm not going to let them know that it ticked me off that I, that I hit the ground multiple times or whatever it was, right? Like, I'm going to let these guys know. I'm going to let them know that it ticked me off. I'm going to let him know that I'm not afraid to stand up to him,

even as the quarterback who's supposed to not get touched, right? So, I mean, I'm with you guys. I think that it's good for the team. And you know what? It can be a version of maybe some breakthrough for them when it comes to just even their closeness together. Well, let's really break down why that fights or fisticuffs, squirmishes, maylays, whatever you want to call it, take place in practice or even in games. That means that someone got their butt whipped.

right and someone is frustrated and as you talk about the broncos practice and bow nakes and i get it the whole idea is that's your starting quarterback you know what the broncos could have done if he didn't hurt his ankle against buffalo so you want to make sure that you stay away from her but i tell you as a defensive player how is it that you want you want to train me as an attack dog and then you want to pull me off how can how is it that i can go through my pass rush and try to get to the depth of the quarterback, and then it's an offense alignment. I just whipped his tail. It is not my fault that I go speed the power, and I put you in the quarterback's lap. Sit down, have a great anchor, and punch. It's not my fault. But I get it. I know it's always a defender's fault.

And I know it's going to seem as though I'm defending defensive players. And if you think that, yes, I am. I'm not a go full for transparency, right? But there's ways around this. There's ways to protect every single player, but every player wants to go through the motions and want to do what they can do. Case and point. If Nick Benito is past rushing against Mike McGlitchie, is it not Mike McGlitchie's job to stop the speed rush? That's his job, right?

Yep. And I'm going to the depth of the quarterback. And I can't tell you how many times I've seen in OTAs, but more importantly in training camp, whether it's Jared, whether it's Bo, whether Sam Ellinger, those guys would have been sacked either by penetrating Zach Allen or Jonah Ellis, Q Robinson, Jonathan Cooper, Nick Benito, you name it. Hell, Tyler Odeyette. But guess what?

The quarterback never stops, right? He keeps running. And I'm looking, I'm like, he would have been the sack if that was a game. But the quarterback throws the ball down the field. It's a double move. Everyone in the fan base is clapping. I got media in some kind of a circle with their pads riding down. Hey, the defensive back on the play.

And I'm like, whoa, whoa, no, no, no. He was stopped, but they never stopped like that. So it's up to the coaches to make sure there's fair play. Because here's what's happening to the defensive guys. Where Vince Joseph and those guys go back into the meetings, they say, you know what? Nick, did you make this play or not? I'm not sure.

And Nick said, yeah, I made the play. And the coach is going to say, but I don't think so. So now Nick is pissed off. So guess what he's going to do in practice? He's going to prove that he got to the quarterback. I can't hit him. But just so happens if the offensive line hits him, that's not my fault. I get paid to rush the quarterback.

So we need to be really particular about this situation. And trust me, I'm not advocating for quarterbacks to get hurt. But just remember, it's the job of the offensive linemen to protect the quarterback. that. Well, and I think like, and I want to, I thought this was kind of funny because when the whole Max Crosby, Kurt Cousins thing came up. Yes. I was the first one to be like, hey, what an idiot. Like he's getting into a fight with his quarterback. But I do, although, obviously, I can't. I'm a Broncos fan. So like everyone's going to say, well, this is the orange glasses. But here's the difference between these two things, right? Max Crosby is the type of guy that goes that hard in practice. all the time and tries to get under the skin of everybody that he goes against, right? And he's purposely hitting the arm of his quarterback or hitting the hand of his quarterback on multiple follow-throughs to the point that the quarterback is like, dude, stop.

Like, don't touch me. Like, get out of here. Like you're not supposed to hit my arm when I'm following through. Like you said, Nick, maybe an offensive lineman runs into the quarterback or bumps into the quarterback by accident a time or two. But if you're out there and you're actively like trying to, you know, hit the guy's arm on his follow-through and say, what? I'm not allowed to do that.

I just think, like, that kind of stuff is stupid when, especially when one guy's got one foot out the door, and it's just like there's a newness to that relationship. It just feels different to me when it's two guys who have been around each other for three years, and you kind of have that relationship equity built. Your pass rusher is not trying to hurt the quarterback. He's not getting his hand up and, you know, smacking his arm every follow-through.

I just think there's different situations. where it's like, man, I really didn't like that left a kind of a sour taste in my mouth. They fought for this reason. And so I think that would be the biggest difference to me between those two. But I don't know if you guys necessarily view it the same way or if I'm just kind of talking myself into, hey, that, you know, one way or the other. Look, look, we can always spin zone things, my friend. I'm spinning it.

That's the beauty of sports talk conversation, especially with the platform that we got. But like, no, look, Max Crosby's, Max Crosby playing for Max Crosby, right? The Broncos are playing for championships. Like the Raiders, are they going to be better? I think so, but like, what is that going to amount to, right? And like, to your point, like, Kirk Cousins is the new kid on the block. Like, I think it's different in the sense of, like, I think Max is, and I don't even know video came out of this.

So I haven't really seen it. But, like, I don't think there was much, like, malicious intent. Like, I could see, like, Max, like, not trying to hurt Kirk Cousins, right? But, like, Max kind of gives me, like, that pest type of vibe. You know, he's just going at you, keep going at you, right? Because he's that dog, right? And like Nick, you know, plays with like a different level of passion. And like I don't think it's apples to apples.

And I think if we kind of just look at it as like, oh, one player knocked another player down. Like why are we treating it the same? Like I think it is similar. But like the motive behind it, I think is different if that makes sense. And I think it kind of hints at like what you were talking about for. But I get it. You have to protect your franchise quarterback. I totally get it.

But I think some of these plays, we can say, well, was there malicious intent on the play itself? And sometimes it's not. And I'll give you a quick story. You know, when Alex Gibbs was here, Alex Gibbs yelled at everyone. Everyone on offense, everyone on defense. That's just what he did. He just yelled.

So when they call the blitz, I'm coming from 12 to 14. First of all, I'm coming from 12 to 14. So I have to read it perfectly and hit the A gap. But I got Tom Nailen sitting right there as a starting center. And if I don't hit that with a certain level of speed and velocity, you know what he's going to do to me. Oh, by the way, Jake Plummer is the quarterback.

So do I run really slow and let Tom Nalen throw me on the ground like a rag doll? Or do I try to run through the A-Gap and try to duck and run past Jake Plummer? You see the conundrum, right? And if I don't do my job, Alex Gibbs' son, David Gibbs, is going to yell at me. So I got two people yelling at me, right? So it's like, what should I do at that point? Guess what? I'm running through the A-gap.

You know, and that's about it. Whatever happens at that point, it is what happens. But this is what practice is. This is what competition is. And I love the whole thing that, you know, Bo was John. He was pulling on Nick Benito's leg. For me, that's going to build a lot of respect on both sides of the ball.

Where if Bo and the offense turn the ball over, it's going to be similar to my days with Jake Plummer. When Jake in the offense turned the ball over and he didn't move it, Jake is going to say, you know what, get the ball back to us, we're going to score because the level of respect is there. So even though there was, I don't want to say fisted cuff, let's just say it was a spirited practice. What comes with that spirit practice is a level of respect that I have for that quarterback because would you rather Bo have just said, you know what? I'm not even getting involved. I'm going to give me a squig of water.

But he jumped in there. You don't want your quarterback to do that. but that's a guy that I will lay down my life for playing his game because I know he's got my back. I think it's a good way to put it, Nick. And ultimately, I think it's a fun thing to talk about, right? But it's kind of like a nothing burger like I think of the grand scheme. I think what you said is perfect, right? It's the heat of the moment.

It's going to happen. Dog days of summer, you're itching for the regular season, right? You've been in this training camp sequence for like three weeks now. It is what it is. But I think it does kind of reflect on the emotion, the passion of this. team. All right, let's go ahead and hit our final break. When we come back, let's go back to the preseason conversation for the matchup against the Green Bay Packers. Who are some players? We've got our ion not named Bo Nix, guys that have an opportunity to build off last week and guys that also

just have an opportunity to make a general impact. We'll hit on that when we come back right here on your locked on Broncos squad show. All right, winding down here on the squad show. When it comes to guys that have an opportunity to kind of make a name for themselves or, you know, just move up the depth chart or just turn some heads in a positive or negative way. Like the first guy I'll start here that comes to mind for me, fellows, is Jaday Barron, right? And I think Jaday Barron's a guy that just has, we've talked about him so many times it feels like throughout the course of the off season, leading up to the preseason and training camp, right? And to see him have that interception, the return that came with it in week

one of the preseason is kind of like, okay, like welcome. Like it was almost like a little bit of like a welcome to the party type of moment for Jada. Barron. And so, you know, that, that to me is a guy, like, outside of Evan Ingram that just, I feel like has a lot to prove fair or unfair, but especially considering his draft stock and just where he was, you know, drafted in positions of need and everything that kind of came with that. Jadae Barron is going to be the one guy that I definitely have my eye on, like for better or for it. Like, a bad game will tell me something. A good game will tell me something. There's just a lot of interest for me for Jadai as it pertains to this second preseason game. By the way, is it Jada? I keep sending it both ways. I hear it. I hear it a number of different ways.

I feel like every time somebody else gets up to the podium, they say it a different way. So I know we've got the j-the-part at the beginning, right? I know that was something that was emphasized early on. But J.B. J.B.'s got to get out there and have a big game, right? Yeah, 2-3. Vance Joseph made some interesting comments about him as well. Obviously, the Broncos are very high on him.

They understand that he's got to go out there and earn his opportunities. And right now, like I was saying to Cody earlier this week on another episode of the show, like the guys that are in front of him on the depth chart have simply earned their opportunities that they're that they have right now. And Jaday is not getting just gifted a first team, you know, label. He's not going to. And I think that that's okay. Like he can play a versatile role for this defense now and then maybe settle in somewhere in the future

because this team just has that kind of luxury, right? So I think that ultimately what Vance said that interested me was, yes, nickel, he's playing in the dime, he's playing outside. There's times when he's shifting up to safety, which I remember was a really big discussion that we had earlier this offseason of like, no, no, no, he's not doing that. Well, Vance kind of just maybe add a little bit of fuel to that potential fire there. So really interesting stuff. I'm also looking at the other tight ends, right? I don't even remember seeing number 80 on the field. like Justin Jolie, I want to see plays made from these guys.

I want to see Justin Jolie, Dallin Bentley, those two rookies getting some opportunities in the passing game to step up and show like this is going to be incorporated in the offense, regardless of whether or not it's Evan Ingram, Adam Troutman, or whoever, I want to see those two guys getting some chances. Well, call him Jaday, call him Jade, just don't call him Shade. I mean, listen, watching him, you know, last week against the Falcons get that pick six, albeit it was Corrine Reed, you know, tips and overthrows, got to get those, just to look at, you know, Jarday running that playback. It was reminiscent of watching him at Texas and the reason why the Broncos kind of drafted him. And I said, you know, about a week ago, I was out at practice with a couple of guys and Cody was there as well. and there was a debate on whether Jada was a bust or not.

And I had to tell one of the local guys who worked for a local radio station, I think it's a station that Anillo works for. I had to say, wait a minute, it's not that he can't play. I believe he is having some issues from a confident standpoint. You go from being the man at Texas, coming into a locker room where you had Riley Moss and PS2, and you're not getting a lot of work. You got a lot of work in that Dallas game

And guess what? I mean, he's covering Jake Ferguson, one of the better tight ends in the league. He got an interception. So what he's experiencing is what a lot on picks experience, you're not getting a lot of those reps where you would have splash plays on the collegian level. So now you're like, man, where is my confidence gone? So that play now reinvigorates him, I would like to believe, and gives him a lot of confidence because guess what he stood on the sideline and watched

before he went in the game? Riley Moss, who is competing with, guess what? he got an interception right so you're thinking like man god darn it i mean this guy was you know having a great camp and then he's out of interception now you get your interception you have your moment on a big stage so you now realize i belong here in this league and now hopefully that carries forward and on friday hopefully we get a chance to see him break up some passes make some tackles and continue to build his confidence i'm with you i'm with you i think another guy that that stood out, excuse me, in the first preseason game was Red Murdoch,

who is a guy that I think Vance Joseph has talked about a lot, trying to put him in the mic position and kind of all the responsibility. That comes with that. And obviously, we know he's an extremely raw player, you know, given where he was drafted in him and whatnot. So I think Red's a guy that I have my eye on. I love that you bring up Justin Jolie as well, Sarah. You know, there's a lot of there.

And here's the thing. There's probably guys that I'm not thinking of that, like, I want there to be at least two or three guys when we come away from the second preseason game like, oh yeah, I forgot about him. Oh, look at this guy. Look at what he did, right? Like that's what the preseason's all about is, is guys showing up and showing out and making a name for themselves and making it so that they're, you know, untradable, uncutable, right? They have to have a spot on this roster. And obviously it's probably more difficult for this Broncos team than other franchises around the league just because of how much continuity

they're returning and running it back with. But I think the names that we've thrown out there, and again, there's going to be some more like, there's certain things you want to see. Right. You want to see the offense look smooth with bow knicks, right? But beyond that, that's where it's a little bit of a mystery of like, who's going to step up and who's going to make a name for themselves, fellas. Yeah, and that's where the preseason is so much fun to me because you have guys from one through 90 that are competing for something, right? I mean, obviously there's the superstars like Pat Sertan, Nick Benito, Zach Allen, those guys don't have nothing to worry about. But then there's guys that are competing for 53 men roster spots. There's guys that are competing for who's going to get on to this practice squad.

We know the Broncos play those guys throughout the course of the season. Pretty much all of them get opportunities. So that's going to be really fun to see. Like I saw somebody in the chat said Joseph Manjack as well. I tried to put out a little PSA on Joseph Manjack earlier this offseason. He stands out for a number of reasons. But the number one reason is he doesn't wear any additional equipment besides what the team gives him. He doesn't wear gloves.

He doesn't wear wristbands. He doesn't wear nothing. No tape, no nothing. So I think it's fun. to see a guy like that who and he got opportunities to make some tough catches too like he made some really nice grabs in the opener so there's guys like that but then there's somebody like i'll throw this name out there cam ross i think cam ross he returned the opening kickoff which to me was significant because marvin mim's not playing so whoever was taking the opening kickoff against

atlanta was going to raise some eyebrows to me so he him being the first guy up was interesting but then to see him get involved in the offense the way that he did, a jet suite for 28 yards, multiple targets in the passing game. And then he was working with the top offense this past week at camp. Bow Nix targeted him on a play. Apparently he dropped a pass, but still the fact that he was out there being targeted by Bo Nix, very interesting, Cam Ross.

I don't know what's to be made of that, but the fact that he was the first return man up, he got three punt return opportunities as well. and he got a lot of looks in the offense. Kind of raising an eyebrow there, Cam Ross. Well, it makes you really think, I talk about Man Jack. What a heck of a name. I mean, come on.

That's a great name. I mean, you got Man Jack and you got to Red Murdoch. I mean, yeah, this seemed like a Marvel cartoon, if you want to call it that. But when you look at LaJordan Humphrey, these are guys that we're talking about that's a threat to La Jordan Humphrey because he's been here for a while. He's been this, him knowing the system. has allowed him to stay on the Broncos roster, be released, and then be brought back in this particular training camp.

But this leaves a lot of opportunities for guys like Manjack to come in and make a name for himself. But Tori and York is another guy that I'm going to keep my eye on because I want to see what he can do from the linebacker standpoint. But J.O. Skinner, man, the clock is ticking, dog. And you're running out of time. You're running out of time to make plays. Because right now, if you look at the Broncos,

Ta-Lano-Hunga, Brandon Jones, who's on expiring deal, and Devin Key, those are your three safeties right there. And J.L. Skinner's been here for three, four years, and he hasn't really done anything to separate himself. And oh, by the way, in the game against the Falcons, guess who's penalty? J.L. Skins. Yeah.

Right? You're trending in the wrong direction. So this is a game. I would like to see him get significant amount of plays. So we can truly see if it's time for the Broncos to move on or can he play himself into a position where he's still a reserve on this roster? I love it. I love it.
