Starting point is 00:01:45 entire app. Sarah roller coaster game, AFC West matchup. It was billed as the biggest game so far of this season. And boy, did it live up to the hype? Yeah, I really did, Cody. I mean, it was the most watched game of the weekend in terms of availability on TV networks. We saw a little controversy there because of the big game going out west between the
Starting point is 00:02:05 Seahawks and the Rams as well. But yeah, this was the holy grail of weekends for Denver Broncos fans. Of course, we need the Dallas Cowboys to now come through on Monday night. But you beat the Chiefs in Denver. You watch the Chargers get blown out by the Jaguars. If the Cowboys can do the job, Cody, that's about as good as it gets for a Denver Broncos fan, especially because you know what? We already know they ain't losing next week because they have a buy week.
Starting point is 00:02:29 And it could not come at a better time. Broncos country's got to be thrilled about this, Cody, because Bo Nix, bounce back in a big way. And the next time this team takes the field, don't want to get too far ahead of myself, but we might have Pat Sertan back in the mix, maybe a couple of other players. So look, this is a great time for the Denver Broncos
Starting point is 00:02:49 now won eight straight games. And like you mentioned, in the driver's seat of the AFC. Well, and the nice thing, too, is just seeing how Bo Nix was able to respond after the last handful of weeks ride. I feel like there was a lot of conversation. And look, I think in tomorrow's episode that we're going to do, we'll have some post locker room footage,
Starting point is 00:03:04 where Quinn Miner said, you know, hey, Bo doesn't pay attention to the outside noise. We don't either. You know, the world may waver, but we're not going to waver and Beau certainly not going to waver. And I thought that we just saw him well in command in this game, you know, from a footwork standpoint, I thought his dropback mechanics were really good. He was in command of the offense. And look, really early on in the first half, the Broncos offense, it struggled in terms of efficiency, but it wasn't because of Bo.
Starting point is 00:03:28 Look, Bo was having some promising drives, moving the ball down field. Denver got plagued with drops, which I think that'll be a larger conversation that we'll have that here in the post game victory here on another victory Monday podcast eight straight Broncos country that's an exciting thing right here but for both to be in command of the game and I think more importantly coming up clutch Sarah fourth quarter you have a tie game here because their defense does the job we'll talk about the defense here in a minute but you need a march down field and you need to get a first down or else you risk giving Kansas City the ball in the final two minutes where they could potentially set up a game winning field goal themselves and it was
Starting point is 00:04:02 filled with adversity sir third and 15 You know what Bo Nix does? He finds Cortland Sutton for 20 on another play on third and five. He finds Cortland Sutton who gets just an inch over the first down marker to keep that drive alive. And then a beautiful throw to Troy Franklin down the left sideline to give the Broncos the field advantage there at the 15 to set up Will Lutz's game winning field goal. Bo made the big throws when the team needed it to. And man, he was, he responded. I think that's what we wanted to see.
Starting point is 00:04:29 And you know what? He beat Patrick Mahomes. He did. Just straight up. I mean, look, he played better and he's playing better than any quarterback in the AFC West, I think over the last two years, Cody, I'm just going to go ahead and say it. I know that may seem like a hot take to some, but look at the numbers, look at the way that he's closing out games, look at the way the Broncos are playing around him.
Starting point is 00:04:49 I just feel like, hey, right now, Bo Nix is that dude. And I know that there were some down times, right? We acknowledged it on the show. You and I talked about it. There's no shame in saying, hey, he played a bad game. But, man, the way that he bounced back. 295 yards passing. It might have been one of the best overall passing games that we've seen from him.
Starting point is 00:05:09 And it ironically came on a week in which I think his, what, 18 game touchdown streak or 18 game streak with a touchdown pass was broken. So he just put the offense in great positions, right? He was making good decisions. He was seeing the field well. He was using his feet well. It just felt like this was the Bow Nix that we've all wanted to see every single week. And you're just not going to get that in the NFL realistically.
Starting point is 00:05:33 right with any quarterback. And so I love the way he responded in this game. I love the leadership that he showed in those big moments, especially on that final drive, Cody, those throws that you mentioned, the two of them to Sutton and the one to Franklin. I mean, that's big time stuff. That's that's Super Bowl caliber stuff from your franchise quarterback
Starting point is 00:05:52 who has now beaten both teams that were represented in last year's Super Bowl. Yeah, that's big. And look, I think in big games, big moments, we've seen both step up to the plate, step up to the table. I mean, Sarah, in his year, young career. He's already got, I think this essentially, it's not like a come from behind. I mean, they were because Denver was trailing at this juncture 19 to 16. And man, that Frank Crum blocked extra point, that actually comes up bigger than I think most people are talking about right now.
Starting point is 00:06:19 But for for Bow in that situation, you got to drive what, 70 something yards essentially, you know, if you wanted to score, that's the long field that you had. You get backed up third and 15 and you find a way to dig deep there. And look, it wasn't just the fourth quarter. I mean, Sarah, I think coming out in the third quarter. Bo, his throws that he had to Pat Bryant. Pat Bryant coming up big on a couple of plays. He had, you know, on that one drive, he had a nice 35-yarder to Troy Franklin down the left sideline again. And he got the Broncos into the red zone and then Gilliam McLaughlin goes in and punches it in. This was, you know, for everything that had happened, the Broncos defense at time has given up some plays. Penalties were another issue in this game once again.
Starting point is 00:06:55 We'll talk about that in our squad show with Broncos safety, Nick Ferguson. But this was a gutsy, resilient win. And for Bo Nix, his. His eighth come from behind victory, his eighth game winning drive in his young career. And there was a time on the CBS broadcast. I don't know if he caught it. Tracy Wilson was saying something along the lines that right before half, Bo was like, go Temple. Like, let's go up Temple.
Starting point is 00:07:16 Let's try to change it. He was begging Sean Payton to do it. We saw Bo Knicks look comfortable doing the things that we saw him do last year, comfortable feet inside the pocket and then delivering. Anything you wanted from Bo, he delivered in this game. Big time. And yeah, I think that comment by Tracy Wolfson was a huge one because it really requires everybody to be on the same page to have that kind of flow offensively. And the running game wasn't outstanding in this one, but I think you had the balance that you needed with R.J. Harvey coming through with some big inside runs on, you know, third and short, second and short situations to keep the chains moving, to keep Patrick Mahomes of that Chief's offense off the field.
Starting point is 00:07:57 So it wasn't like ideal balance in terms of the statistical production. You're not, you didn't have a hundred yard rusher in this game. You didn't have, you know, a three touchdown game from your running back. But what we did have was these guys coming through in situational moments like the third and 15, the third and short, the second and short, when you needed that pass play to Troy Franklin to set up a give me field goal after the chiefs burned all their timeouts. Like situationally, this was one of the best games from the Broncos. and they were able to overcome their mistakes,
Starting point is 00:08:29 which you and I have talked about this. The margin for error for this team is so vastly different than it was a season ago, right? Where a season ago, you can't afford 140 plus yards of penalties in a game. You still don't want to have to try to overcome that. But this is a team that they just did it against the reigning AFC champs, against the dynasty that is the Chiefs. I feel like, man, even as good of a game as this was from Denver, we've yet to see them play their best game yet,
Starting point is 00:08:58 but what are we hearing in the lead up to the game, Cody? This was the biggest game. According to Adam Schefter's report, the organization viewed this as the biggest game since the final Manning Brady game, the AFC championship in that 2015 season. If that's the case, man, they came through huge and the best is still yet to come.
Starting point is 00:09:15 And Bo Nix delivered when they needed him to and look, obviously for Troy Franklin, he shook off a couple of drops. Look, I felt like there was one pass to where he was clearly held. They didn't call it. But for him to come up with a couple of clutch catches, you know, I think that's just why you emphasize, like, it's frustrating during the game when there is a drop, right? But that's why you just got to stick with guys. You just got to keep getting reps because you need them to bounce back.
Starting point is 00:09:36 And look, Pat Bryant coming up big and this came to five catches, 82 yards, Troy Franklin, four for 84. Things opened up eventually for Cortland Sutton, four for 59. Evan Ingram, four for 33. If the run game, which will need to be a very important part for them going forward, if that is going to accelerate, especially without J.K. Dobbins for the year, this team, team will find its stride offensively. And when it does, sir, I'm excited to see where the Broncos are right here sitting at 9 and 2 going into the buy week as top dogs in the AFC and the AFC West here, folks. But the Broncos defense against Patrick Mahomes, they came up big when they needed to, including Jayquan Macmillan will highlight the defense's effort and more here on today's episode,

The Denver Broncos win over the Kansas City Chiefs is going to go down as the J-Quann Macmillan legacy game. The dude was all over the field making plays, including a ball don't lie interception off Patrick Mahomes, a couple of sacks in this game. We're going to break down Jayquan Macmillan's performance. Vance Joseph. I mean, the guy is out of his mind right now, Broncos country.
Starting point is 00:12:57 We're going to break it all down for you on today's post game episode. Locked on Broncos, but quickly want to say thank you to every single one of you, everyday listeners out there that makes us your first listen of the day. Every single day, we're celebrating a victory here for the Broncos, and we're going to be celebrating for quite some time because they are off next weekend. And Cody, I think that's great news that the Broncos get some time to recover. But man, the secondary has held its own in the absence of Pat Sartan. That's a massive, massive loss.
Starting point is 00:13:27 the way that the secondary played against the Kansas City Chiefs in this game. Obviously, Riley Moss had his struggles. We could talk about that later. But let's focus right now on this J-Quan-McMillan legacy game. I mean, this was the bingo card of stat filling. If you're Jayquan-McMillan, what a performance from him to help the Broncos get a win. Look, no Pat Certan. You're going against a Chiefs offense that has every weapon possible,
Starting point is 00:13:53 including Tyquan Thornton, who made a terrific catch against him. Maybe he could argue there was an offense. offensive PI on that, a little push off there. But, I mean, J. Mack competed. I mean, they had Xavier Worthy, Rishi Rice, Juju Smith, Schuster, Tyquan Thornton, Travis Kelsey, Taylor Swift's husband, Kareem Hunt, you name it. Like coming into this matchup, I think we're all sitting here saying, hey, like the Broncos defense, look, they've been so good, but they're going to have to bring their best effort here. Look, despite Kansas City being five and four at the time before this game, this was on paper.
Starting point is 00:14:22 I think definitely one of those matchups, you're like, hey, can the offense find a way to help the defense out? the defense is going to get stops, but the Chiefs are going to make plays from time to time. And they did just that. His interception that he had, obviously was big. It led to a return. And ultimately, Denver came away, I think, with a field goal on that drive. But for me, I just think that Jayquan coming up big, the final, what, final four minutes of this game, third down, which was a problem a little bit late in the game.
Starting point is 00:14:49 That's where the Chiefs were capitalizing late in the second half. J. Mack, Vance Joseph just dials up his sicko card right there and says, you know what? We're sending J-Mack all-out pressure. And initially, Jay-Mack jumps up in the air. But then he just goes in and he sacks Patrick Mahomes. And it gives the Broncos offense life once again. And Marvin Mims with another good return. Sarah, this was huge for Denver.
Starting point is 00:15:11 J-Mack, I think if we're going to hand out a defensive player of the game, he's going to get this, man. The Broncos without PS2 coming up against this personnel. It was huge. Yeah, it really was. And J-Quain Macmill and Cody has developed into such a, I want to say, like, savvy blitzer. because there's an art form to it, right?
Starting point is 00:15:29 You have to hit the quarterback at just the right spot. You got to time things just right. You have to disguise it just right. He's been really good. And that goes all the way back to remember that game that he played against Josh Allen back in 2023 when it felt like every single play he was taking the ball away or creating a big play for the defense. This was one of those types of games for him, right?
Starting point is 00:15:52 Where it's the interception. It's being in great position, even on that deep ball where Thornton just made a great play. You come up with a sack at the end of the first half that shuts down the shenanigans of the Kansas City Chiefs where I was on the edge of my seat. I mean, they're 60 yards away from the goal line, Cody. And I'm sitting there thinking that what happened on 3rd and 19 to Riley Moss is about to happen before the end of the first half.
Starting point is 00:16:17 Well, Vance Joseph perfectly dials up that blitz call right there because you got four guys deep. Mahomes is waiting to chuck it. And he's like, no, we're going to shut that down. Jayquan Macmillan's going to come in, Blitzia, take you down. And then the play to set up the final drive, the game winning drive, the sack where Patrick Mahomes gets up, he's tapping his helmet, like, I got hit in the head. Nobody's listening to you right now, not even the refs, man, which is a big, big deal because
Starting point is 00:16:43 they usually do listen to you. So Jayquan Macmillan made that happen. He made it happen for this Denver Broncos defense, which played outstanding overall in this game. I mean, Cody, my gosh, Vance Joseph, he's got to be somebody's head coach after this season. There's no question about it.
Starting point is 00:17:03 Selfishly, you don't want him to leave, though, right? I think for his resume, what he's done, he deserves it. He's going to be probably one of the hottest names in the upcoming head coaching cycle that's going to happen. And selfishly, I hope he stays. Selfishly, I hope he says, I want to stay a coordinator because the way that this defense is playing for him
Starting point is 00:17:21 is impeccable. I mean, these guys rally around VJ. I mean, his turnaround from what happened in 20, 23 in that Dolphins game to now. I mean, it is one of the greatest, I'd say, comeback stories you could mention. And VJ has never wavered. And guys in this locker room are going to go after it. I mean, his pressure, the way they dial things up, Sarah, look, it's hard to get after Patrick Mahomes. How many times do we see Mahomes throw several passes behind the line of scrimmage or they try to do jet sweep stuff just to try to negate the pass rush that Denver brings to the table? Three sacks in this game for Denver's defense and moves them up to 49.
Starting point is 00:17:54 right now in the NFL, Sarah, 49 through 11 weeks of play. Pretty dang good pace right here, still on pace to break the 1984 Chicago Bears. This is a very, very exciting spot for this Broncos defense being. But let's talk about some of the big time numbers, too. Third down, Denver holding the chiefs to five of 13. You know, I felt like early on this game, some of the earlier downs were hurting them, especially first down. They were getting some chunk plays, but Denver finds a way to adjust and to buckle.
Starting point is 00:18:21 Can I say one thing? Talano Hufanga, one of these days. is going to come up with an interception, man. He has been so close the last three weeks with the ball hitting his hands. And this goes back to the Philly game, too, almost had a pick six in that game. He's been so good. He's been everything that you could hope for for this Broncos defense. And man, they rolled the high of this one beating Kansas City and Patrick Mahomes.
Starting point is 00:18:42 Can't understate it enough. No, I need Tala Noah Hufanga to get an interception, Cody. I mean, just it's going to be immaculate when it finally happens. It's going to be like, you know, the two fingers touch. And then it's like the whole explosion of like all the everything good in the universe. Everything is right in the universe. Society will be as it should be when he finally does get the interception because he's come so close. But yes, when you break down these numbers for the defense, I mean, Justin Sernad playing in place of Alex Singleton,
Starting point is 00:19:12 I think that's an underrated little situation right there because your green dot guy was out for this game as well. Sternad made a couple of really nice plays on Travis Kelsey, made a really great tackle in space. one point. He filled in as well as we expected with Drey Greenlaw being the other guy next to him. So this was our first chance to really see that. I think they did Alex Singleton proud out there, Cody. Chris Abrams, Drain came up big with some plays in this game. And how about if we can extend it just a slight bit from the defense to the special teams? We haven't worked well of the special teams all that much this season. But Devin Freaking Key, rare that guys pop off the screen on kickoff coverage. But in this game in particular, it was to the Broncos advantage to kick the ball where
Starting point is 00:19:59 the chiefs were going to return it because of Devin Key. And he made so many plays happen on special teams, Dondrey Tillman as well, setting up longfield for Kansas City. That was critical in this game. So Devin Key playing a big time role. I think he would get one of the game balls. If we're giving out game balls, I've given one to Devin Keith. Yeah, we're going to hand out game balls in our Broncos squad show here in a little bit with Nick Ferguson. Obviously, Sarah, Nick, and are going to break everything down, go a little more extended into some of the X's and O's that we saw from this game. I'm so glad you brought up Key, Dandre Tillman, even Q Robinson getting in the mix here. Once again, the Broncos young depth getting there. And I love that
Starting point is 00:20:38 the defense never wavered. 110%. Marvin Mims return, great to have him back in the mix as well with his big time return ability. The Broncos are in a good spot right now. And they can't get comfortable with just sitting here at 92. They obviously still have room to improve in a lot of areas. But But right now, Broncos country, they're at 9 and 2. They're top dogs right now in the AFC. So we'll talk about that as the Broncos get ready for their buy week. They have firm control of the division going into the buy. How can they maintain that?
Starting point is 00:21:04 We'll break it all down here on today's episode, Locked on Broncos. Today's Lockdown Broncos post game is brought here by friends over there at Fandul. The NBA season is back. The NFL is in full swing and there's no better place to get in on the action than Fandul, the official sports betting partner of the NBA. Starting point is 00:22:00 To sign up and play your game with Fandul, the official sports betting partner of the NBA. Top dogs of the AFC West. It's been 10 years in the making. And the last time the Denver Broncos won the AFC West, it was 10 years ago Super Bowl 50 season in a year where they won the Super Bowl this year. They're going to Super Bowl 60s in Santa Clara 10 years after the fact where it all happened. And the Broncos right now are in prime position.
Starting point is 00:22:29 once again to win the AFCUS. And, Sair, when we talk about Sunday going exactly how you wanted to, if you were a Broncos fan, the Chargers get Mollywopped by the Jacksonville Jaguars in dramatic fashion. The Broncos beat the Chiefs. This was everything that you wanted because now you get two games ahead of Kansas City. Now you get multiple games ahead of, I mean, you get of the Chargers. Now you get multiple games ahead of Kansas City at this juncture.
Starting point is 00:22:54 Sunday couldn't have played out any better for this Broncos team. And like you mentioned, it's the first time in 10 years, right? And we have this discussion after the playoff game against Buffalo last year, with Sean Payton's comments that he made where he said, we got to find a way to be hosting one of these games, right? And I think at the time, even my optimistic self was thinking, well, I mean, Kansas City not going to lose more than four games in a season, right? With Patrick Mahomes and with that defense playing well,
Starting point is 00:23:22 well, here they are. The Broncos just handed them their fifth loss already this season. And they play the Colts this coming. week. So they might have even more on the docket here shortly. And so this is the opportunity. Like everything that's been laid out before the Broncos, they took advantage. Like this is a situation where 2021, you got a chance to make a playoff run, right? Cincinnati Bengals game, you blow it. You had a chance last year to take control late in the season. You blow it against the charges. You blow it against the Bengals. You need a win against the backups versus the Kansas
Starting point is 00:23:54 City Chiefs. 2020, Christmas Eve, right? Was it a Christmas Eve or Christmas Day? You go up against the New England Patriots and Bailey Zappi and they zapi you right out of the playoff discussion. I mean, it's been one thing after another where the Broncos cannot take advantage of the opportunity that's before them.
Starting point is 00:24:13 And when you have nine wins in the middle of November, it sets you up to be able to now think not just playoffs, not just winning your division, but can we get the number one seed in the AFC. Well, right now as it stands, the Broncos, they hold the number one seed. They're tied there with the New England Patriots because the Broncos, folks, they have a six and two conference record against AFC opponents. This was an issue for them last year. And look, I think so much of you go back, what is it, Denver is 14 and 4 since the blocked
Starting point is 00:24:43 field goal at Arrowhead. And they've used that momentum to just build like, hey, we're going to be tenacious. We're going to overcome these things. And look, talking to guys in the locker room, they downplayed it a little bit. They were saying, you know, I mean, obviously that was a big moment for us. But they're like, it doesn't correlate to where we're at now. We know what type of team we can be and we wanted to put forth. For us, it's great because it's like, ah, we can like drop and put the little pins on the wall there and say,
Starting point is 00:25:07 ah, this, this, this and this. It led to where the Broncos are at right now. But last year was it was conference games were a problem for Denver. And, you know, they were thriving on sweeping the NFC South. And now they're in a position. They're beating tough teams. They've won two divisional games now, which obviously gives them in a, advantage in this whole entire situation based on where they're at.
Starting point is 00:25:27 And now you have a chance to just to continue to build momentum. Baltimore's on the rise a little bit with the team that they got. Houston, you know, is still in the mix here. Kansas City, you mentioned they play the Indianapolis Colts this upcoming week. They're in a position where they could get put down even further and you want to see that. I think if you're rooting for anybody in the by week, Broncos country, it's against every team. Like the chargers are on a buy, but you've got to hope that the Chiefs lose another game here. Denver, I would say as cliche as it sounds, and we say this often, they're in control of their own destiny, and they're not even playing their best football yet, and they're sitting here at nine and two.
Starting point is 00:26:02 This is a good spot. And look, coming out of the bite, who do they have, Sarah? They got the commanders. You had a game against the Raiders. Then you play the Jaguars, the Packers. So you have two straight road games to start off the second half, and then followed by two straight home games against tough opponents. We could see this Broncos game against the commanders flexed out of Sunday night football, Sarah, potentially, because of where the commanders are at,
Starting point is 00:26:23 but we could see them potentially flexed against Jacksonville or the Packers into a primetime spot. 100%. And I think that what's going to be interesting, I know you and I will have plenty of time to talk about these things during the byweek as well, but I'm kind of interested to see if the commanders are even going to play Jaden Daniels, if he's able to come back and be ready for that game,
Starting point is 00:26:43 because do you want his first game back from injury to be against a team that might set the NFL record for sacks? Like, do you want to subject your franchise? quarterback in a season in which you're what three and eight at this point or three and seven whatever it is they are you don't want to subject your quarterback to that especially when there's no shot of you even getting to the wild card with how convoluted the nfc is this year with the nfc west being outstanding the north having potentially three playoff teams as well it stinks to be in the nfc right now and even being good in the nfc and the broncos can maybe take advantage of that i'm not
Starting point is 00:27:19 saying you need a gimmie coming out of the buy go ahead give us Jaden Daniels and the commanders coming out of the buy. That's fine. But where you're at right now is an enviable position. And even in a quality division with the reigning AFC champs, even with the Chargers being at seven wins already, they're beaten up and they did not look good at all against the Jaguars. They look terrible as a matter of fact. They have no running game to speak of.
Starting point is 00:27:45 Justin Herbert played terribly and he's done so a number of occasions this year. So I think that when you look at where the Broncos are at right now, it's now, put your foot on the gas time. Go out against the commanders and Raiders. How quickly can you get to 11 wins? And Cody, man, we get to sit back and enjoy some football next weekend with no stress of the Broncos losing. And not only that, then we get to circle it back on Thanksgiving and watch other teams,
Starting point is 00:28:11 you know, go at it again. And the Broncos will still be nine and two at that point. It's going to be great to watch things unfold before that commander's game. The Broncos will have so much to, go in their favor that happens in the in between. Yeah, and so much to look forward to. I mean, obviously during the by week, we're not going to be off, folks. We're going to have you cover.
Starting point is 00:28:31 We're going to take a look at the first half of the season. We've got a lot to break down. We're going to talk about this game a little bit more in depth on the Broncos squad show coming up here in a little bit for everyone in Broncos country to hear myself, Sarah Bedinger, former Broncos safety, the great Nick Ferguson. We're going to break it down. We're going to talk about DB technique, how Riley Moss can adjust because he's being penalized, and it's a trend that he's got to obviously correct.
Starting point is 00:28:52 We'll recap all that and more. Plus on tomorrow's lockdown Broncos, Sarah and I, we're going to highlight the run game what the Broncos need to do with R.J. Harvey, J.L.O. McLaughlin and the offense going forward now that J.K. Dobbins is out for the remainder of the season. So much to break down. Stay tuned with us all week long here on the Lockdown Broncos podcast.
