Starting point is 00:00:00 How are the Denver Broncos going to potentially navigate this week with the uncertain status of Patrick Sertan 2nd and Marvin Mims following Sunday's victory against the Cowboys? We'll debate and discuss that here on today's episode, Lockdown Broncos. You are Locked on Broncos, your daily Denver Broncos podcast, part of the Locked on Podcasts Network, part of the Lockedon Podcast Network, your team every day. What's up Broncos country? Welcome into a bonus episode, Lockdown Broncos, your daily Denver Broncos podcast, part of the Lockdown Podcast Network where you know it's your team every day. I'm Cody Roark, Broncos reporter from all high sports. And on today's bonus episode of the show,
Starting point is 00:00:39 we're going to go through some updates regarding Pat Surtan and Marvin Mims and their injuries that they sustained in the Broncos, 44 to 24-24 victory over the Dallas Cowboys as the team improves to 6 and 2 on the season. You're going to get that all in today's episode, the show, Brockley of our friends over there at GameTime. Download the GameTime app, create an account, use code, lockdown NFL for $20 off your first purchase here today. Let's go through this here because this is obviously going to be a big storyline.
Starting point is 00:01:03 We're going to monitor beginning today. And obviously, I think all throughout the week here, as the Broncos now prepare for a matchup with the Houston Texans and an AFC conference showdown, a lot at stake here, especially with some of the talent that the Houston Texans certainly have. Let's start off here with cornerback Patrick Sartan. Now, obviously, there was a couple of scares here with Pat early on in the Cowboys game, specifically on Denver's first defensive drive.
Starting point is 00:01:27 He had an amazing pass breakup on George Pickens in the end zone. He got up and celebrated. And then immediately went down to the ground. round with a lower leg injury is his lower right leg there. And he was walked to the blue tent there slowly with his arms around medical staff. And then he emerged from the blue tent as the game was kind of unfolding, probably about four or five minutes after the fact of the injury. And he was running in place, jogging, planting, cutting, working on a back pedal just to see
Starting point is 00:01:52 is there stability? Can he give it a go? So we know that he rolled it obviously early on this season against the Indianapolis Colts and was able to come in and finish that game and play well. Pat came back and he played this game really through the entire first half. And he was even on the field when Jada Barron had his interception of Dak Prescott in that second quarter right before halftime. So the assumption here, and obviously the Broncos listed him with a shoulder injury
Starting point is 00:02:16 coming out into the second half, they told us that he was questionable to return. I scanned in the press box looking at the sideline, didn't see number two anywhere on the field or even on the sideline at that point. And I was like typically that's not good news if he's not out on the field. So we were waiting to see if he was going to emerge at any point. That never happened. He was quickly downgraded to out. And so we don't know here because obviously Sean's not going to talk about injuries after the game.
Starting point is 00:02:42 We're going to have a conference call here shortly this morning in the next handful of minutes with Sean where hopefully he can give us some insight. But then again, knowing Sean, he's probably not going to go into injuries. He always tells us he doesn't talk about that. I understand that. But for the Broncos this week, the status of Patrick Sertan, the second, the reigning defending NFL defense, to play of the year is very important, as is Marvin Mims, which we'll talk about Marvin and his situation a little bit later on here in this bonus episode here as we kind of set the stage for the week. But for Pat to not come back there, we did get to see Chris Abrams
Starting point is 00:03:13 drain get some volume here and he got some looks in the second half. And the Cowboys, they went after him. And if Pat is unable to go here on Sunday against the Texans, which there's a lot, I mean, there's a long time between now and then. There's a whole week of having to maybe get to practice. but our hope is that we don't maybe hear anything bad regarding Pat in his shoulder before anything comes out this week for practice. Hopefully he can be out there by the time we go. We'll have to see, but there could be maybe a double injury designation,
Starting point is 00:03:42 a shoulder and a lower leg. That's something we have to estimate for potentially this week as we await to hear from Sean Payton or we don't hear anything at all from him. But if the expectation is if PS2 is unable to go, Chris Abrams-drain is going to be that next guy in line to obviously get the start on Sunday against the Texans. I know it's way too early to look ahead, but this is a real possibility here that we need to take a look at. And for Chris Abrams-drain, I mean, the Cowboys, as we talked about,
Starting point is 00:04:07 they were one of the high-octane offenses coming into Sunday's game in terms of the most yards per game that they obviously accumulate. They're the second highest-scoring offense in the league, averaging 31 points per game. The Broncos did a really good job. I mean, obviously with a banged-up pat in the first half, and I also thought Chris Abrams-drain did a pretty good job. Now, a lot of what the Broncos did defensively in that second half,
Starting point is 00:04:28 half. There were times they went man to man coverage, but a lot of it, they played a lot of zone. And so obviously for Abrams Drain, he's keeping things in front of them. They have different things that they run. Like obviously, if you know what a match concept is, they'll call zone. But if a certain route goes vertical or goes in, like you may have to play that as man. It just depends on where you're at and what, you know, where your help is inside or outside or over the top. But we saw that Chris Abrams Drain was playing a lot of off ball coverage. That's where he feels the most comfortable as a player versus just going out there and playing press, but in situations I know that for this defense, you're going to have to play
Starting point is 00:05:02 press. So I'll be very curious if Abrams Drain does in fact get the start this week, if Pat hypothetically cannot go, he is going to probably be expected to see a lot of volume and a lot of target there. Obviously opposite of Riley Moss, I imagine teams might go less towards Moss and more towards Abrams Drain this upcoming week, if that is this situation. But I, you know, I want to give a, you know, I want to commend Abram's Drain for stepping in as well because it's a tough spot to have to get in, you know, to go and play. And I thought he did pretty well initially holding his own. I felt like even on a couple of the grabs that, you know, that a guy like C.
Starting point is 00:05:33 C.D. Lam or George Pickens certainly had on him. I felt like he was in pretty good coverage on one. There was one where the Broncos were playing zone and George Pickens had a two toe tap to be able to get in there. I think that was on a fourth and short there. So obviously things that are correctable here. So Vance Joseph and his staff, they're going to go through. They're going to watch the film and they're going to see, okay,
Starting point is 00:05:51 here's what Abram's Strain did within the scheme and the structure of our defense and the play calls here. And you can also build an anticipation as well as to maybe what the opposing offense that you're going to face this week, which happens to be C.J. Stroud and that offense that they have down there in Houston, they're coming off of a big win. As I mentioned earlier, against the San Francisco 49ers, they're going to look to test him a little bit.
Starting point is 00:06:12 So I'm very curious to see what the Broncos could roll in terms of a plan there. And certainly when you look at cornerback depth, you want a little bit more there. Jaude is going to play inside that nickel and that dime look. He's going to be a slot guy. So I don't even think he's going to factor into the potential. realm of playing on the outside, though that is a possibility. So I wouldn't sleep on that. But the expectation would be if PS2 is unable to go, Abrams drain more likely would
Starting point is 00:06:35 get the start and we'll see who's in the rotation as well because J. Mack can also play on the outside. So you may even see Jamek start, Jadae playing and starting inside the nickel and then Riley Moss. That's also another likely lineup situation that you could have here. But then let's also go into the Pat Certan injury. Now obviously we didn't get to talk to him in the locker room post game, but I saw Pat. I mean, we weren't able to talk to him.
Starting point is 00:06:57 I saw him briefly. His arm wasn't in a sling or anything like that. So that's obviously good news that, you know, usually if you have a shoulder range, sometimes they want to put you in a slinger or a brace. That was not the case when we saw Pat. So hopefully knock on wood, that's a good sign.
Starting point is 00:07:11 But obviously, he's going to undergo x-ray, undergo MRI. So we'll keep an eye on all these things. And when obviously news happens, that'll be a subject focus of another episode that we're going to do here on lockdown Broncos. But definitely something worth keeping an eye on here. As the Broncos begin this week, You're a short turnaround.
Starting point is 00:07:25 Now you've got to go on the road, face the Houston Texans. It's going to be 11 a.m. Mountain Time kickoff game. And they could be getting Nico Collins back from an injury in this game as well. We know what Nico can do to opposing defenses. Certainly, we remember what he did a couple of years ago to Denver's defense, specifically. Almost had 200 yards in the first half alone of that game. So the Broncos probably going to have a lot of time here to put together a very good game plan
Starting point is 00:07:46 to get after C.J. Stroud and company, but also know that their passing secondary is going to be tested a little bit if, in fact, PS2 is unable to go. We'll keep you posted all week long here. But Broncos country coming up next. We're going to talk about Marvin Mims. He is now in the NFL concussion protocol. We did not get us to see him.
Starting point is 00:08:02 But if he misses time, what can we expect from the Broncos offense? You'll get that more here on today's episode, Lockdown Broncos. Starting point is 00:10:49 Download game time today. Following Sunday's win against the Dallas Cowboys, Marvin Mims has entered the NFL's concussion protocol, which puts his status for this week's game against the Houston Texans into potential question here. What will the Broncos do if Marvin is unable to go this week? We'll get an early glance at what the Broncos options may be here on today's episode. Locked on Broncos, thank you to all the everydayers. Once again, thanks for tuning in making us your first listen, however you choose to do so. We appreciate you so much here.
Starting point is 00:11:16 Obviously, coming out of Sunday's win, we saw Marvin Mims play quite a bit. He had a game-changing kick return in this game that set things up. He was impactful, obviously, as a backfield guy in terms of as a rusher here for the Broncos, helping them pick up a couple of first downs. He had three carries for 18 yards. The Broncos found a way to utilize him in a couple of different ways. Really, even outside of the receiving game as well, the return aspect for Marvin is so important to what this team wants to do. Obviously, he and RJ Harvey, when they're returning kicks, when he's returning punks,
Starting point is 00:11:46 he's the lone guy back there. and with him potentially going through concussion protocol this week, it puts his status for Sunday's game against the Houston Texans into question here early on. So here's what we know. Marvin obviously played and he finished the game, but he's now in the NFL's concussion protocol. And this was stemming off of the helmet-to-helmet hit that a cowboy safety had on him on the right sideline as he was getting ready to obviously run the football there.
Starting point is 00:12:12 He finished the game, obviously. So he didn't enter a concussion protocol from our observation until after the game, game. I'm not sure what prompted that if he was exhibiting any symptoms, but we did not get to see Marvin inside the locker room. And that's something we're going to monitor this week. More than likely, as the Broncos return to the practice field on Wednesday, is Marvin out there, right? Marvin's obviously got to go through protocol. He's got to clear some hurdles before he can do anything. But I also remember Nate Adkins a few weeks ago being put on the concussion protocol coming out of the Broncos game, I believe it was against the Cincinnati Bengals,
Starting point is 00:12:45 and he was able to clear it, and he even played in that Philadelphia-Eo's game. I believe that was the case there. He cleared those hurdles, but obviously the Broncos erring on the side of caution here, because really even after that play, the referees did not flag that live as it was happening. That should have been a penalty on the Cowboys there. It should have been an extra 15 yards. Marvin ended up getting a first down on a toss play to the right side later on in that game. So we're going to monitor his status.
Starting point is 00:13:08 I mean, he's obviously posted on social media, Instagram. He typically they always tell you when you're in concussion protocol, stay off your devices, is your bright screens that you tend to have there. That's one thing they always say. So we'll see. We're not going to speculate on that further, but let's just go through the hypothetical here. If Marvin has to miss Sunday's game or if he's out of action this week,
Starting point is 00:13:26 you know, in terms of practice, what might the Broncos contingency plan be for him? I think this is a great question here because I think you'll probably see a lot more of obviously Pat Bryant, Troy Franklin, obviously in that regard. You might just see more of these sets where it's Evan Ingram.
Starting point is 00:13:41 It's all these past catchers versus it just being Marvin, And though Marvin adds an interesting RICO because not only can he be a downfield threat for you offensively, but he's also the guy that gets involved in the backfield. So it's highly unlikely the Broncos call somebody else up. I mean, Kyrice Rowan is a guy that they just brought back on the practice squad. It was with the team in training camp all throughout the entire summer there. Not expected that he's going to have any type of role here, even if Marvin happens to miss this game, though you do like his speed, maybe you can use it in the backfield.
Starting point is 00:14:10 But if, in fact, like the kick return game, I imagine it will be Tyler Bade, and RJ Harvey is those two guys that are back to return if Marvin's unable to go this week. And then Riley Moss is obviously the punt returner, the backup there to Marvin. They could change that throughout the week. But right now, he's kind of the safe guy that fields everything. He's been catching punts in practice for a very long time all throughout the entire summer. So they may just stick with that if Marvin is unable to go here. But it certainly does take away one of your biggest advantages on special teams and obviously a weapon on the offensive side of the ball because Marvin is this type of guy that can have a big impact.
Starting point is 00:14:43 He can have a big play at any moment and flip-filled position for you the way that he did against the Cowboys on Sunday. So we'll monitor that status. Denver does have some practice squad rider receivers. Samori 2-Rays obviously there. He's one of those guys that has speed. You still have Michael Bandy in the mix here. A.T. Perry is on the practice squad as well. So maybe one of those guys gets a practice squad elevation this week, right?
Starting point is 00:15:03 Where you don't have to bring them onto the 53, but you can elevate them for game day and potentially use them if need be. We'll see where things are at here. Obviously, is the NFL trade deadline is also a proclamation. coaching. There's some talk. There's been some rumblings that the Broncos could be interested in a receiver, though I don't see that being the case. There's rumblings about tight end. I don't know if that's going to be the case as well. And speaking of tight end, end, Nate Atkins also left Sunday's game in the fourth quarter after that a pass that Bo Nix had to him in the end zone for a potential touchdown. He did not finish the game. We didn't see him in the locker room afterwards. So we'll wait to hopefully get an update on him. But hopefully here, knocking on woodbiz, we're set to hear from Sean Payton to just moments from now. Hopefully there's an update. or a good update that he can provide or maybe there's news coming out from agents that we can rely on
Starting point is 00:15:48 that can give us a little bit of a better idea on the status of all these players. But Broncos Country, this bonus episode is putting all of this on your radar when official news and prognosis comes out. Hopefully we get good news on Cirtan and Mims and Nate Adkins. And if that's the case, we'll obviously break it all down. If it's not the case, you'll get a bonus emergency episode as well.
Starting point is 00:16:06 We're going to keep you covered every step of the way here. Locked on Broncos. What that said, Broncos Country, that'll wrap up today's bonus episode of the show. Stay tuned tomorrow with Sarah and I. We take a look around the entire AFC, the AFC West, plus updates on Marvin Mims, Pat Sertan, and more. Following John Payton's media availability here this morning.
