The Denver Broncos wrapped up their first on-field practice.
And even though it was an acclimation practice,
second-year wide receiver, Pat Brian.
He stood out.
You are Locked-on Broncos, your daily Denver Broncos podcast.
Part of the Locked-on podcast network, your team every day.
What's up, Broncos country?
Cody Roark, Sir Beninger here for a training camp.
Day one practice recap here on Locked-on Broncos.
Practice, it was short, it was sweet, but the Broncos' offense,
they stood out.
sizzled a little bit early on in some red zone work here as the Broncos start to ramp
things up ahead of Friday's first extended practice of training camp where fans will also be in
attendance.
Sean Payton also highlighted that he believes the Broncos had the four ingredients to becoming a Super Bowl
caliber team as something he saw in that team last year.
And he believes that this year's team has as well.
We'll go through what that is.
But we're going to kick things up by going through some of our day one of Broncos practice
news and notes.
Second year wide receiver Pat Bryant was one of those standout players during practice here
today, Sarah, even though it was an acclamation practice, which once again, in helmet,
Jersey shorts, you're limited on time.
But the Broncos did a seven on seven period, a team period, and a special teams period,
and then they were out of there.
Pat Bryant was the one guy who looked apart all day.
I'm excited to hear more about what that looked like, because ultimately Pat Bryant in
year two is somebody that we've talked about, especially in recent weeks,
maybe having a more increased and substantial role than previously expected, right?
with Jalen Waddle coming into the mix and Sean Peyton singing his praises after practice as well,
you certainly wonder, what is the plan for Troy Franklin, for Pat Bryant, for Marvin Mims?
Well, at the back half of last season, it was Pat getting the majority of the snaps, even over Troy Franklin.
And so what we saw in that playoff game, three straight targets to open up the game essentially for Pat Bryant.
I think we're all excited to find out how much better can he be in year two now that he's no longer
a rookie kind of trying to make sure he just keeps his head above water,
you know, drinking the new playbook through a fire hose,
trying to earn his stripes and just acclimate to the NFL.
Now that he's an established pro after one season in the league,
what does that look like out there even without the pads on for him to show that
progress here in year two?
Well, you and I talked about these build up acclimation practices when the pads aren't
on the positions that are easier to evaluate quarterback play when you're throwing
and the skill players on offense, defense, and the reactionary guys at the second level of linebacker,
everything else is really harder to evaluate.
But that was the Broncos focus here today.
So let's go through it.
I felt like the seven on seven period, my goodness, if you're a quarterback, you were having a lot
of fun.
If you were Pat Bryant, you were having a lot of fun because it was a red zone goal line emphasis
for them in seven on seven.
And I have my handy dandy notebook as always.
And for those that are watching the show, you can see there are a lot of stars.
Stars mean that's a pretty big play there.
let's open up with Bo Nix who is fully ready to go.
He was on the field, no limitations in seven on seven, this red zone period.
He threw a touchdown pass to Jalen Waddle who was working against Riley Moss.
Jalen, the thing that I like about him, man, it just, you see the shiftingness.
And it is so tough to, I think, cover a guy like that, especially when they bring him in motion.
And that's something I think we saw a lot of here, some of the new wrinkles that maybe Quinn Miners,
who we heard from earlier in the week told us about with this offense, there's some new wrinkles to it.
I think a lot more motion is going to be in the playbook.
But Jalen scored in seven-on-seven goal line against Riley Moss.
And then Bo Nix found little Jordan Humphrey on a very nice toe tap on the sideline
for a touchdown working against J-Quon-McMillan for the touchdown there.
And that kind of ended his day.
He did have a throw attempt to Sutton on the first play,
but it was more than likely a PI by J-Mack.
I know that the offensive guys were calling for it.
And then he attempted to go to Cortland Sutton on his final rep.
but PS2 was there and there was nothing obviously for that one to be done as that pass fell incomplete there.
But really productive day for Bonix and that period there, the quarterbacks as well, like Jared Stidham.
Once again, just finding rhythm going to guys like Pat Bryant, little Jordan Humphrey did have a drop.
But then Jared Stidham threw a touchdown pass to Jonah Coleman who was working against Jonathan Cooper.
And he threw a touchdown pass to Michael Bandy, who was working against Devin Key.
So very productive for him.
And then Sam Ellinger comes in and throws a touchdown to Pat Bryant, two touchdowns of Pat Bryant.
to ultimately end seven on seven.
So very crisp day for the offense here to open up.
Sarah,
I always try to tell fans,
when the pads come on,
these things will be easier to evaluate.
But for the Broncos offense,
not a bad start.
And typically we hear that the defense is the one that's starting off hot,
even without the pads on, right?
I mean,
so I think it's a nice kind of change of pace
to hear about the offense performing well to start things off.
And what really gets me excited about what you just said about,
Pat Bryant,
as they're, you know,
emphasizing and focusing on red zone work,
even if it's seven on seven,
is that ability to make difficult catches in traffic, right?
That's one of the ways that you're going to be able to cash in
and become better offense in 2026,
if you're the Denver Broncos,
is figure out ways to finish drives.
Well,
if you have a receiver that can make those difficult contested catches in traffic,
it's not always going to look like,
hey,
can you go up and moss a defensive back, right?
It's going to look a lot more like,
can you catch the ball when it's kind of sneaking through
a couple of defenders and you have to make a catch with somebody draped all over your back,
those are the types of things that we want to see from Pat Bryant because when you get into
that tight red zone, everything shrinks. And it's much difficult for an offense to punch in that way.
So for him to have that skill and to be going up against these elite defensive backs and
getting reps with both the backup quarterbacks, I think that's really, really good stuff.
And so to hear that the offense showed well on the first day of camp, I've had Bow Nicks,
obviously is everybody's wondering like coming off the ankle, is he back?
Is he full go?
It seems like Bo was kind of the story from you and everybody else that I've been following who,
you know, you release all your tweets that you can unleash after practice, right?
It sounds like Bo Nix had a pretty unanimously great day out there.
Yeah, and that kind of transitioned over to the team period.
Once again, I just want to remind folks, like this was not your normal typical practice
where you get seven on seven and you get like two team periods.
two special teams periods and a move to the ball period.
Like this was different.
This was one seven on seven period.
One team period, special teams, boom.
You're out.
Probably going to be the same exact thing for Thursday's practice,
which we'll have a primer for you tomorrow tomorrow's episode of the show.
But the buildup, I think, is when you're going to start to see that Friday's practice,
when fans are in attendance.
You are going to see, I think, a little bit more.
So then that gives you more volume, right?
Because I think fans are also wondering, like, okay, well, Pat Bryant showed out here on day one.
What does that mean about Troy Franklin, Marvin Mims?
well, there weren't enough periods to go around where you could really see those guys get those opportunities,
even though that the approach for the staff is rotating everybody, and that's exactly what happened.
Like, it wasn't just, hey, Pat Bryant is solely running with the guys on the first team.
Pat's getting works with Stidham.
He's getting work with Ellinger and the third team.
Like, they're just moving guys around.
And even Cortland Sutton, too.
So it is good to see that for the offense there.
But I'll say this, he did have a nice touchdown pass to Pat Bryant in the actual team period with J.Mack in coverage.
and J-Mack had really, really tight coverage on it,
but you mentioned it with Pat,
the thing that stands out about him,
duty, he's got clutch hands.
He's got, it seems like he catches anything that goes his way early on here.
Tough angles, high, good body adjustment for him.
That's what you like to see.
And so if he can continue to build on that,
Pat's going to have a very big role inside of this offense here
coming into the 2026 NFL season here.
But one thing we also learned from Broncos training camp day one.
We got to meet with Sean Payton,
who talked with us for,
30 minutes in the scorching sun.
But one thing he did acknowledge, he said it last year,
this Broncos team can win a Super Bowl, and they were close.
And he goes through and it highlights exactly what the four ingredients are that make Denver a Super Bowl contender.
And he believes the same case to be true here in 2026.
We'll highlight that on today's episode of the show.

Get started today.
Do the Denver Broncos have Super Bowl ingredients in 2026?
Absolutely.
Yes.
And that's not just coming from us.
That's coming from the head coach.
Sean Pady talked about it after day one of Denver Broncos training camp,
Broncos country.
We're going to reveal those ingredients,
which you probably already know the team has,
but we're going to list them out one by one.
And before we do that,
I want to say thank you to all of you that make lockdown Broncos,
your first listen of the day.
Every single day,
we appreciate you so much for rocking with us.
can't wait to continue to break down training camp practices. And certainly Sean Payton press
conferences, Cody, I know I called it on the squad show last week that, I mean, we were going
to get the relative twos. I couldn't think of the phrase off the top of my head. I was kind of choking
under pressure while we were recording. But man, the relative twos were flowing from Sean Peyton. And
certainly they were flowing when he was talking about, do the Broncos have the ingredients to be a Super
Bowl champion this year because he was trying to pitch that message to the team last year.
I thought it was a good question.
Then somebody asked of, hey, what's the message this year?
Like, this was what you told them last year.
You believe that this is one of the few teams that you've coached that could win it all.
What about this year?
And he's like, absolutely yes.
And I think there's no question where he began the list of the must have to be a Super Bowl team.
Yeah.
And it starts with the defense.
He says, I believe you have to have a really good defense.
And obviously the Broncos have a very, very, very.
good defense. And there's still areas of their game that they can get better. We'll highlight those here in a minute.
Number two, he said, you've got to have good quarterback play. And they believe, he believes so much in
Bonax. He had nothing but high praise for Bowe. And obviously, what we've seen from Bowe in his first two seasons,
should have Broncos country excited. Third was your offensive and defensive line, like winning in the
trenches. Those are the key guys that you have to have there in terms of that. Like, I think those three things
are the secret sauce to be able to win a Super Bowl in today's day and age. Because we've seen the last
years. What do we see against the Kansas City Chiefs, who everyone was like, man, this, the team
that's going to be the, you know, team of destiny, they're going to three Pete. Philadelphia said,
nah, that's not happening. They dominated in the trenches there. Last year, the New England Patriots
simply got dominated in the trenches by the Seattle Seahawks. So so much of that trench warfare,
that plays into it. We know the Broncos defense that we just talked about as one of those secret
ingredients, one of the best passers in the NFL for back to back years. Well, they have that.
The offensive lines got to get that run game going. I think if they can, if they can
do that, Sarah. And that's really the missing piece. The run game and takeaways. The Broncos can get better in these two areas. This team, I think, we'll get back to the Super Bowl this upcoming season. But once again, you got to get through the entire grind of the season. There's no just returning just because you have the same group of guys. No, there's not. And I thought you asked a really good question about that. I was, you were walking with me on the treadmill while I was listening to you, Todd Payton, Cody. So I was getting my steps in listening to you guys. And I thought you asked a good question to him,
about, you know, that continuity and how much that plays in.
Because I think you and I both assumed, well, certainly Sean Payton, the historian,
is going to know that his team has 94% of the snaps coming back
and how historically relevant that probably is because that just doesn't happen in
professional sports.
But I found it interesting that he thought there was a lot more turnover than maybe meets the eye.
For the fans listening, for the media, who's talking about continuity, continuity,
run it back, run it back.
Sean was talking about one of those categories that you discussed,
that coaching category and how there's been plenty of turnover,
even on the coaching staff,
which is a really good point because you obviously have a new play caller
offensively in Davis Webb,
but you also have somebody coming in Ronald Curry to coach up the wide receivers.
Obviously, you know,
there's the shuffling with the offensive lines,
Zach Streif being the run game coordinator.
So it's all encompassing, right?
You have a lot of similar players on the roster,
but you're also starting fresh.
The puzzle is being reset, if you will.
So there was a lot of good takeaways from what he had to say,
but I like that he doesn't just see this as,
because I think the perception could be if you're trying to run it back,
that means that you don't have any interest in changing things up.
But from Sean, for, I guess to hear him just kind of sort of say,
hey, it's way more turnover than you really think.
That indicates to me that he's not thinking in,
well, he said he doesn't want to say running it back, right?
He doesn't want to call it that.
He hates that.
He hates it.
So I think it's nice to actually like, okay, I see that he's telling the truth in that
and not just trying to control the verbiage.
He doesn't actually believe they're running it back.
There's a lot that's changing, especially even starting with him.
Yeah.
Well, and for him, the process of handing off play calling, that is a change, right?
That is a significant change.
Yes, you can look at personnel.
You're losing PJ Locke, who was the number three state.
You're losing JFM, who was one of your better pass rushers who played under 50.
50% of the snaps last season for the team.
And now you're hoping that maybe three other guys.
And that's one thing else to talk about.
Like he didn't say that one guy specifically, he said it's a rotation.
We see a rotation there, which makes the most sense.
It's hard to replace just one guy with one younger guy and placing all that pressure on him.
But then it is the new coaches.
You mentioned Curry.
You got two new secondary coaches in Doug Belk and Robert Livingston that are joining the staff.
So it's being able to get those guys on the same train as everyone that is back from the coaching staff and getting the new players that have come in, whether it's Tyson and
who's your loan-free agency signing or your rookie draft guys or undraft guys,
getting them to understand the expectations, there are a lot of new faces,
even though that a lot of those faces that you saw last year are back into the mix.
But the one thing that stood out, what Sean told me in response to that as well,
he said, nothing is promised.
And I think that has to be what we rely on all season long.
Like, hey, Devere made it to the AFC championship game.
They won, what was it, 11 straight games last season?
They won 14 games.
Well, they're going to be back next year.
Nothing is promised.
Nothing is guaranteed.
And the team has that mentality because Pastor Tan the other day said,
look, we believe we have high expectations.
The expectations around this team we know we're high.
We have high expectations of ourselves.
We're going to take it week by week.
We're not going to focus too much on what's ahead from now.
Three weeks from now.
We're focused on today.
We're focused on the week at hand.
That's the right mentality that you have with bringing that same message of continuity back.
Well,
and I maybe Sean Payton said, Cody,
that there's no current like mantra for the team.
at this camp.
Maybe it is that.
Maybe it is that nothing is promised, right?
Because we all saw Quinn Miners take the podium with the GTD on his shirt.
And I had to ask you what that meant because to me,
GTD is short for guaranteed, right?
And so I think it's funny that it means go the distance, right?
But it's kind of like, hey,
somebody should point out to Sean Payton that those shirts say guaranteed,
you know, and nothing is guaranteed.
Nothing is promised.
Did you learn his response to that?
No, I want to, well, and tell me what he said.
I don't, I don't remember off the top of my head.
So they were, they, someone brought up like, you know, the players have GTD on their shirts and he goes,
he last, he goes, that's their strength coaches.
Like that's not, that's not his motto.
He said, we don't have one yet, but maybe we'll find one here as camp goes about.
I like it.
Hey, maybe you throw out the idea.
Just say, hey, nothing is promised.
Because look, that's got to be this team's mentality, right?
when you try to get back to doing anything or when you get an opportunity to do something great,
like play in an AFC championship game, there's no guarantee of getting back.
I think about players like, like think about Brandon Marshall is one of the best players in
and I guess one of the best receivers in my opinion in NFL history.
That might be a hot take for some people.
Big, man.
Big, big dude.
He was great.
He was phenomenal.
And never,
never once played in an NFL playoff game.
And I think that's insane to think about.
Like some guys just don't get that opportunity.
So while many of these guys were in the AFC championship game last year,
there's also a lot of folks in the NFL media world that don't even think the Broncos are going to get back.
I saw recently some Super Bowl odds that had them as 13th, 13th in the league in terms of Super Bowl odds.
And sure, that means absolutely nothing in the grand scheme of things, right?
But it can serve as a reminder of what you said,
that nothing is guaranteed.
And that's what Sean Payton believes.
This team understands and they're not playing afraid,
they're not practicing afraid of missing an opportunity.
I think you have to understand the gravity,
like you said, of each week, each game this season.
Yeah, and I think the team has the mindset to do it.
And I think that's the challenge.
Sarah, I can't reveal who I sat down with one-on-one,
just over the weekend for something we're doing for my high sports.
But I asked them that same question about you guys got so close.
close. You guys, or is that this close to your ultimate goal? Now when you look at it,
even though you have so many people back, is it easier because you're bringing everybody
back or is it harder? And that player, and he's a star player told me it's harder. I believe
it's much harder. So we really have to focus on every detail. We have to focus on ourselves.
We tune it, we tune out the outside noise. And I think that's what's allowed us as a team
to go as far as we have. And we know where we have to improve. And that's something that
Sean also emphasized was going back to the potential statistical.
regression in the one score games.
He said, we look at some of these metrics that we believe the margins that we have to be
better at.
Sarah, he didn't say it directly, but I believe that was the takeaway battle.
I believe it was being able to run the football a lot more effectively.
I think it was Denver's offensive numbers on third down and also avoiding the three
notes.
Those are the three things that stood out to me is, hey, we have to, we have to get better
in these margins if we are going to win games.
And the one thing he also said, the one way to find yourself in a position,
where you don't regress, don't find yourself in as many one score games.
That means you've got to find a way to blow teams out.
And that's what I'm most excited about.
Like when we talk about that all offseason, everybody's argument for the Denver Broncos being
worse is, well, you're not going to get so lucky in one score games.
And I tend to agree.
I don't think that the ball is always going to bounce your way.
They got unlucky against the Colts.
They got a little unlucky against the chargers.
And you could flip the narrative and say, well, they should have probably been.
undefeated almost last year.
They got blown out by the Jaguars.
But in reality, yes,
there was in 2024,
we saw this team just,
I mean,
they crushed some of the worst teams
that they played in that season.
And how did they do it?
Well,
the majority of those games,
I bet you they ran the ball really well.
And so that's what I think has to happen this season.
Sean Peyton probably understands that.
You could look at it before and after,
2024 versus 2025.
That's got to be one of the number one factors along with,
like you said,
takeaways because if you create more opportunities for your offense, you got more opportunities
to blow teams out because you get more chances to score the football. So it's simple math in that
way. And it's easier said than done in some instances. But those are the things that I know this
team knows they can do it because they rack up five turnovers and takeaways against Buffalo
and Josh Allen. And then all throughout the course of the regular season, you're kind of just,
you know, scraping and clawing for one here and there. And it just, that's not how, that's not the
formula for success in terms of, you know, blowing teams out.
So I think the Broncos can be much better.
And I think that's a really encouraging and scary thing for the teams that they'll be
facing off against.
Well, coming up next, Sarah and I are going to break down some other practice news and
notes.
Who was there?
Who was not injury updates, potentially on Jordan Turner and Nick Gargulo, who landed on
injury list.

But the good news for that, Nick Garjulo, even though there's no timetable for his return,
he is on the side field doing stuff, which is a positive sign for him.
and Jordan Turner on the side field doing stuff.
I think Jordan is a lot closer to returning than maybe Nick is at this point.
We could see him maybe next week we'll have to see.
But if he returns within the next week or so, that bodes well for Denver's linebacker competition.
Let's talk about him, but also Caleb Loner.
We know he had the offseason procedure.
There was a lot of buzz around what Sean said, like just watching him.
He's improved in a lot of different areas.
Well, we did not get to see him on the first day of practice.
He was not spotted and he was also not on the side field.
That's really interesting to me because he also wasn't placed on any sort of list at all.
So I'm confused by that one.
I kind of assumed while he'll be out there practicing.
So I know that his injury wasn't necessarily specified other than to say that it was a lower body,
I believe, procedure that he had earlier this offseason, Cody.
So really unfortunate timing for him.
And certainly you kind of assume the worst when they're not out there,
you know, at least on the side field.
and that's discouraging because you want to see Caleb get the opportunity at least,
even if, I mean, we did our 53 men predictions, didn't have him on there,
but go out there at training camp, do your best and kind of just see what happens.
But regardless, I think the Broncos value him plenty, right?
They're invested in his development.
So that's a TBD on that one.
I am highly interested by Jordan Turner getting back out onto the field because when the pads come on,
as we know that's when the linebackers are going to be able to really shine.
Jordan Turner is somebody who got the intriguing athletic traits,
played a bit more last year than I think maybe anybody really realizes special teams and on
defense.
And so they may have plans for him as that number three guy.
I think that was where things were trending based on how I felt in the offseason.
I feel like between he and Red Murdoch, right?
Those were kind of the guys I had like Jordan Turner slash Red Murdoch, LB3,
more than likely.
and I kind of had that highlighted there.
It's hard in today's practice that we saw to pinpoint,
like, okay, well, how did the guys in the rotation behind Sternat and Singleton do?
Well, I mean, the offense, they cooked on the day.
So not a great day from the defense from those practice reps that we saw.
But once again, this is just a small piece of the pie here.
The good thing with Turner is that his injury doesn't appear to be serious.
So if he's back at some point in the next week or two,
then that's obviously a great sign because he still has plenty of time to get to where he needs to be
as Red Murdoch, Tori and York, we go through even Lavel Bailey, Corny Reed, getting reps and
opportunities, you know, along the way. You're not in the position right now with this team where
it's like, oh my gosh, like this guy's out. Okay, what are we doing here? It's like, no, your starters are
pretty much mostly set offensively, defensively, maybe in a spot or two could be up for question.
But it's not like it's an imperative piece right now. It's like, man, this guy's going to be your
starter. He's not there. This is concerning, which we ran into that last year with Dre Greenlaw.
Yeah, and that was obviously a huge concern, especially because a year ago at this time,
Singleton was coming off the ACL and Justin Sarnad hadn't really done a whole lot at that point.
So I think you feel a little bit more confident about those two guys, at least in terms of their knowledge of the defense,
if nothing else, certainly feel like the Broncos could have done maybe a little bit more to upgrade the talent at that position group,
but you can't have a perfect roster in the NFL.
It does not exist.
So we'll see what happens.
I think over the course of training camp, we're going to find out quickly because the Broncos, like you said,
they've still only made one free agent pick up this entire off season.
That doesn't, I don't think that's going to be the case by the time the season rolls around.
I think we'll see over the course of camp, maybe some other names brought in, maybe not big names necessarily,
but, you know, we'll see.
We'll see what happens.
I think ultimately you're one day in right now.
You love the guys that you have.
You believe in your player development.
Like Sean Payton said, he believes.
coaching is one of the key ingredients to winning a Super Bowl, and he feels like the Broncos have
great coaching. So I feel like this team really is confident with where they're at, which
sort of in a way gives me that confidence as well, even though there might have been a few things
roster-wise that I would have certainly done differently. One other injury update for Broncos
country. One player did leave practice early, did not return. And that was undrafted rookie free agent
defensive back, Blake Cotton out of Utah. He was what he walked inside with
trainer and then another trainer followed with the helmet in hand. So, you know, during this time,
we don't get official injury reports. So we don't even know what it is, but we just know that he
exited practice did not return in the time that we are watching. We'll see if he's back out there
tomorrow or anything like that. But knock on wood, the Denver continues to stay healthy,
because that's going to be a huge key for them this upcoming season. This is the roster that
can do it. They believe they got the quarterback that can do it. And man, if this group can stay
healthy and they can go the distance, who I'm excited to see what type of year we're going to
have here covering this football team. But as always, Sarah and I, we're so excited at Broncos
country. Make sure you make lockdown Broncos your home every single day from now all the way
through the regular season, throughout the playoffs, and even throughout the off season. We still
got you covered every single day. We'll be back tomorrow for a primer, what you need to know
going into day two of Broncos practice and setting the stage as well. Plus, we're answering your
everyday or club text messages tomorrow's episode of the show. We'll see you then.
