Starting point is 00:00:33 this MLB season. Broncos training camp practice set to take place here in just a few hours. But in today's show, we're going to go through and talk about Jaday Barron. There's been a lot of misconceptions about his potential role here in 2026, and we're here to clear that up. We'll also talk about Bo Nix and his hot start and some of the noticeable changes from a mechanic standpoint that could have sharpened his game. And we're going to kick things off by talking about a topic that people in

Starting point is 00:00:59 Broncos country wanted to happen the moment he was released from the New Orleans Saints, adding Tayson Hill to the mix. Now, Sean Payton met with ESPN NFL Network, Steve Weish, Cynthia Freeland over the weekend at training camp. And he made mention to them that the team would look to explore adding Tayson Hill to the roster. I disagree with it, Sarah. I don't know how you feel about it.

Starting point is 00:01:19 I don't like the idea of doing that. And I'll obviously dive into my reasons. But where do you stand on this? You know, I don't mind it. I think that as far as having a guy on the 90-man roster and Taysam Hill, what he's kind of brought to the table, in terms of, I think if the Broncos were in a position where they would need to sort of carve out a role for him that was unknown, I think it would be a little bit more problematic. But, you know, when you have a guy like this who's played for Sean Peyton, who's played really well for Sean Payton, it's kind of crazy to think about the, the role that was carved out for him in the first place.

Starting point is 00:01:52 Like with Drew Breeze, that quarterback, and you bring in this guy out of BYU, who's just really fast and really tough and really strong. And he catches passes for you. He plays that wildcat position. You can play some tight end. He could play a lot of special teams, return some kicks. So I can see the appeal. Like if he's trying to come and play for one more season, making sense to play for Sean Peyton, the question that I would have would probably be the same as you and a lot of

Starting point is 00:02:18 others is, do you really want him stealing snaps from Justin Jolie, Dallin Bentley? Does he take Bo Nicks off the field at times? Like those are the things that none of us really wants to see. So that's where I'd be interested to know what to what end are they looking in and exploring this Taysom Hill idea. Well, and the thing that I'm against, like the preconceived notion that you see on social media right now, a lot of people are saying, oh, you know, I looked at Tatea Hills highlights. Great. Four years ago, it was fantastic.

Starting point is 00:02:48 You know, 2022 when he came to Denver during or the COVID year and beat the Broncos, he and Latavius Murray. Okay, he's not that guy anymore. He's going to turn 36 here in the next month. month or so for the same. Actually, I think it's this month. He's going to turn 36. And he's coming off of like what happened in week 18. Shout out to our friend Ross Jackson. I asked him a little bit about his thoughts on TASM. In week 18 last year, Taysam Hill suffered a shoulder injury. Now, I don't know what the extent of it was or whether or not there's something that's going to be lingering. But also Tassum missed the first part of last season because he was coming off of a multi-ligament

Starting point is 00:03:23 knee injury, including an ACL and then a posterior one of those things, the same thing that Javante Williams essentially had, right? And when you look at his overall numbers spread out through the course of 13 games played in last season, he had 52 carries for 114 yards collectively spread out amongst 13 games. That's a 2.2 yard per carry attempt average right there. And you also look at the receiving game. I think he had 11 catches for 91 yards and 13 games. Like to me, I don't think you bring Taysam Hill here into Denver and you immediately put him,

Starting point is 00:03:54 I would say, in the tight-in room where he's getting snaps ahead of Evan Ingram or he's getting snaps even against Adam Troutman. I think there are times you can be creative, but also to your point, the one thing I do not absolutely want to have happen, any moment where Bowknicks has to come off the field. Like the Broncos, they've been building this offense a certain way. And now with Davis calling it, you think Davis is going to go out there and be like, I'm taking ball off the field for Tassam. I don't think that would sit well with Davis.

Starting point is 00:04:19 I don't think that would be a Davis sign of approval move, even though he's not the head coach. Ultimately, Sean makes that decision. I just don't like the idea of bringing in a 36-year-old guy right now that's going going to come in and potentially jump and get in front of potential development of these younger guys that you mentioned like Justin Jolie. He can get reps this season. He doesn't need to get a large volume, but he can learn behind Evan Ingram, who I think right now has more to offer than Taysam Hill. And Taysam was great. Don't get me wrong. I just don't think that Tassum is a

Starting point is 00:04:46 great fit for the Broncos right now with the direction in which they're heading. And Broncos country, I'm curious to hear what they have to say about this well. It's a polarizing topic right now. He definitely is, right? I mean, I think when you talk about a guy, like this. He's a big name. I mean, he's obviously scored a lot of touchdowns in his career. He's obviously made a lot of really good plays. He's played in some big games as well. He's been on some of the teams that Sean Payton would say are some of the best teams that he ever had in New Orleans. So I think there's a reason why there's sort of that attachment there. And you obviously have now somebody on the coaching staff and Ronald Curry, who knows him well from their time in New Orleans as well. So I think

Starting point is 00:05:25 that there's there's the one thing that i like about the idea cody is what it really indicates to go after a free agent like a big name free agent like this who obviously you know he's not the same guy that he was when he was his late 20s for the new orleans saints or even his early 30s for the new Orleans Saints. I think when you go after a big name like this, it sort of reminds everybody that, hey, we're able to sign the ring chasers. And I like that. I like that the Broncos are in position to go after the ring chasers or that they're a team that, let's say, Taysam was saying, hey, I want to play one more year in the NFL. I want to give it to the Denver Broncos. Like, I remember when Mike Shanahan was the head coach, there was so many free agents like that that would

Starting point is 00:06:10 come and sign in Denver, like, you know, random ones even, like Jerry Rice or, you know, Simeon Rice. So many notable veterans who would come and sign in Denver. And it didn't ultimately work out with every single one of them. But I think what it indicates is that, hey, those players see what you're building. And they want to be part of that. And so I kind of like that. Of course, there's the connection between Peyton and Hill.

Starting point is 00:06:33 So it's not necessarily just that he's saying, hey, I want to play for the Broncos. It's more so I want to play for Sean Payton. but I do like that the team is in a position to go after the ring chasers, even if they're not going to just sign every free agent that hits the street. Well, and the thing with Tason, too, at this point, I mean, there's even a chance that he retires. I mean, that's kind of something that he's, I think, weighing between playing or retiring, but like even for this moment, too, okay, maybe the way that I would be okay,

Starting point is 00:06:58 if the Broncos were to add him. Okay, right now the Broncos, they're down Caleb Loner. We have no idea when he's going to be back at the tight-in position. It hasn't been on the practice field, hasn't been on the side field. We have not seen him at all so far since training camp has started. If you need to add another body there, fine. I'm okay with that. But I don't think that it should be under the crux of we're going to take away

Starting point is 00:07:21 reps from Dallin Bentley, Lucas Crowell and these other guys too, Justin Jolie. I don't want it to take away from the reps of these young guys who the team invested draft capital in who have an opportunity who have athletic upside to be able to come in and have an impact. Is it going to be a big impact as a rookie? I don't know. I mean, the likelihood of that being the case is probably not very realistic right now. But if they can carve out a role for themselves, start learning it and getting just some on-field

Starting point is 00:07:45 reps, that's going to help them a year from now, two years down the line. You bring in Taysam because you hope that maybe you can capture a little bit of lightning in the bottle of who he used to be. I just think that's a little more risky. It risks your player development, even though Tassum is a great character guy, a great locker room guy to be in. I just think it sends the wrong message to what the Broncos have been preaching all off season long about, hey, we like to draft and develop. We like our younger guys here.

Starting point is 00:08:11 I understand at times when the guy becomes available, you got to make a decision. I just don't think personally right now, TASM is going to move the needle here for Denver, the way that maybe he used to in New Orleans, and especially at the cost of some of these other younger guys getting on the field. That's just my firm stance in the Broncos country. That's kind of our question of the day is training camp continues here this morning. I'll be out practice here in a couple hours. Bo Nix is not just looking good at Denver Broncos training camp. He's got a little bit of different mechanics to talk about. And certainly Broncos country, as Cody and I were kind of just talking over the weekend about,

Starting point is 00:10:06 hey, what is standing out? What's different about Bo Nix? Cody told me something on our phone call that we had on Friday, that we've been eager to share with you on today's show. Broncos Country. Starting point is 00:10:23 And we appreciate you for rocking with Lockdown Broncos. It's just so great, Cody, to finally be back into the thick of things here. So I know that every dayers out there are getting not just everyday episodes, but multiple. day episodes when the Broncos practice as well. But let's talk about what you and I chatted about on the phone because there's been a lot of discussion at the first couple days of training camp. The Broncos were off

Starting point is 00:10:50 on Sunday, of course. But Friday and Saturday when the intensity ramped up a little bit more, more team stuff, what's the biggest difference that you've seen from Bo Nix based on years one and two now going into year three because it's not just, oh, well, the ankle looks okay. Like he looks like he's all right out there. It sounds like Bo has taken that extra step in his, you know, sort of progression as a player. Yeah. And I would say the thing that stands out to me, I just feel like his mechanics are a lot

Starting point is 00:11:19 cleaner. And I'm not the only one who's made mention of this as well. And I'm sure this guy that I'm about to bring up probably has some inside intel from Davis Webb, considering he was on this team last year, but he's close with those guys. Ben Danucci even mentioned too. there was that clip of Bo Nix throwing a pass to Jalen Waddle where he caught it one-handed. And, you know, one thing that Ben made mention of was, you know, his release seems really good, really tight.

Starting point is 00:11:41 Like that was one thing that he was kind of focused on. And then I think if we go back to what Bo had said in the off season, what was one of those things that he mentioned in his video when he was trending down in the Alabama heat? He mentioned that he was trying to work on getting a quicker release and trying to keep his mechanics. Like, you know, when you're kind of working on that quick release, you want to keep everything tight close to your body, right? Whereas I think Bo in his first couple years, there are times where we see

Starting point is 00:12:03 Bo's arm kind of goes wide and he's got the arm power and the arm talent to throw it far. But I think with the mechanics kind of being a little bit more closer to his body, he's got more torque. And I think his footwork is a lot more polished. I think we're seeing that because I'm watching Bo test certain things. I'm watching him in pre-practice when he's stretching and getting worked up. And I'm watching him in team peers. The one thing that he's doing now, and I think it's a confidence because of these new mechanics,

Starting point is 00:12:30 Bo is trusting his mechanics and also just trusting his armtout knowing that, hey, if I work on this release, if I get it to where it needs to be, his arm angle is where he's throwing. He's throwing to guys now more with anticipation than he is. Like, you know, for example, let's say you have an end breaking route. Usually quarterbacks are coached up, hey, if you're read there on the end breaking route and he's coming open, right when he starts to plant and work his way inside, you want to hit him right at that point where he's starting to break in.

Starting point is 00:12:57 Bo is throwing with anticipation. and now it's all kind of on the wide receivers, right, who have a lot of pressure on them as well in terms of running their right routes. Sean Payton has made mention of it so many times about the landmarks that these guys need to hit. Bo, I think we're seeing a lot of confidence. Not only his arm, I think we receive more accuracy from him this upcoming season, but throwing with anticipation to spots knowing, hey, I know where the coverage is. If my guy does his job, I know he's going to be here and it's doing that and it's throwing it there.

Starting point is 00:13:24 And I think that's also, hey, the J-Lan Waddle effect that we're seeing. I loved what we've seen so far here early on from Beau. His mechanics look very sharp. That was what got me the most excited, honestly, when you were talking about the mechanics and sort of just anticipating, having that quicker release and sort of seeing things before they happen, right? Because what do people always like to say about, I guess it's not just the quarterback position,

Starting point is 00:13:48 but certainly when NFL players grow and they clearly take that next step, the phrase that commonly gets used is, well, the game is slowing down for him, right? And we've talked about that in the past. And it's not literally like, oh, he's not out there playing at warp speed. But what's happening is that your mental processing is so much better. And Sean Payton also spoke to that, Cody. I mean, this was an underrated quote that he had after practice.

Starting point is 00:14:13 When he was asked about Bose progress and reading defenses, he said, I think simply all of it. The sub defenses, the third down defenses that they face in our league sometimes can be a little bit more complex. I think it begins to slow down a bit when you get into year two, year three, you begin to see and maybe not get fooled as much. So when Bo is reading these defenses and these complex looks that he's getting thrown at him, it's not necessarily, oh, well, he's drinking through a fire hose as a rookie. And then in year two, they're making adjustments to his game from the year before. And now it's like, hey, Bo is kind of able to play the game of chess a little bit more

Starting point is 00:14:49 than just the defense going against him. Well, and think about Denver's defense. Look how complex that they are and the looks that they do. And one thing I've noticed specifically that I can give you fans that are listening to the show, we see it all the time. Remember last year, Van Joseph's defense, how many times they'd walk Alex Singleton and a linebacker up, they'd walk them both up into the A gap.

Starting point is 00:15:06 We call that a mug, a double mug look inside the A gap. Sometimes both those guys can go. Sometimes both those guys will end up dropping back into coverage. You're showing the blitz, but both are dropping back. One guy's blitzing, one guy's dropping back. Bow is recognizing that saying, okay, I know that I got a guy walked, I got guys walked up here in the, A gap. Okay, there's our alert. But then I also know that that backside safety is cheating down.

Starting point is 00:15:28 Like he's going to try to blitz. Often at times the focus is here first. Internally is always going to be where we have the most, I'd say, permanent threat to the quarterback getting attacked. Like if a defensive lineman gets an inside path to the quarterback, that's the easiest path to getting after them versus someone rushing from the outside because then your offensive tackle can kickstep. Your tight in can come back underneath the formation and block them. You're running back can pick him up. It's harder when it's inside. So I'm seeing Bo, he's processing and he's reading the coverage. He's reading where the safety is. And the safeties are kind of telling him based on where the linebackers are, okay, I think I know how this one's going to go based on the formation that they have,

Starting point is 00:16:06 how many receivers they have to this side or that side. And Bo saying, I know where I'm going here. That's where we're seeing him play fast. And the thing that I'll say this too, his mobility, we've seen him use his legs. He had a rollout touchdown throw to Pat Bryant just the other day. It was nice to see. So I'm, I don't want to say that I. I'm shocked, but I want to say that I'm comfortably surprised that just how good Bo has looked early on here in Trinicab. And, of course, the pads aren't on just yet. They are going to come on, I think today, but it's not going to be full padded contact. I think it's going to be shells and then full pads we know on Wednesday.

Starting point is 00:16:39 That's where we can tell a little bit more because the offensive line, defense line can go. But Sarah, I wanted to get to something. I was thinking about asking Bo and I had a chance to ask him in the press conference about Davis Webb, what it's been like for him because he was limited and mandatory minicam. He only got seven on seven reps. He didn't actually get the call from Davis and go execute the plays there. Training camp has kind of been that first go for him. Here's what he had to say about Davis.

Starting point is 00:17:01 It's been really good. Honestly, I felt like we picked up right where they left off in spring and feel like I picked up right where, you know, left off with coach. And so it's the voice in my ear, but, you know, both were very, you know, coaching. Davis, both very calm, decisive, give me the play. I feel like Davis is doing a really good job of, communicating with me, not over communicating, but just give me a few things here and there,

Starting point is 00:17:28 reminders, little things about a play. Like, hey, don't forget this. Hey, remember you got this. And so I think that's going to be great as we go with that communication my ear. And, you know, he's been waiting for this moment for a long time. He's been preparing for this. And he's really put us in a good spot. I think the great thing and the encouraging thing that I've been thinking about with Davis Webb in recent weeks,

Starting point is 00:17:51 recent days, Cody. is this idea that I think a lot of folks are wondering, is he going to, you know, what happens if the things go off the rails? And Sean Payton has to take back play calling from him. That's the worst case scenario that everybody's afraid of, right? Because the first time play caller, first time offensive coordinator, young dude,

Starting point is 00:18:08 never done this before. But what I really like is that he has all these different pieces around him to be sounding boards. Obviously, Sean Payton, you know, for one, but certainly veteran players on the offense as well to help him know that things are running smoothly, right? And for Bo Nix, who's in his third season, they've all been together now for a handful of years.

Starting point is 00:18:28 So I like that Davis Webb has that sort of continuity to work with on the roster, as well as that big piece that you mentioned to Jalen Wowell getting added, who, I mean, the dude is just, you can't say enough positive things about him. He walks on water. So I've never seen, I've seen a lot of penguins, Cody. They got a lot of penguins here at the Omaha Zoo. Haven't seen any of them walk on water yet. So I'm excited to see Jailen Waddle out there on the water.

Starting point is 00:18:51 field. Well, and the thing I have noticed about Davis, and I think this is easy when he even became a coach in 2023. Players, players really like him. I think that the locker room, they support Davis a lot. So I don't think that Sean would ever peel the curtain back. I think if anything, if Davis was struggling, I think Sean and him would work together a little more. Sean would be that sounding board. I think that's what Sean does. Sean values Davis. He respects him. And it's obviously that bridge, that, you know, I'd say that triangle between Sean Peyton, Davis Webb and Bo Nix. I think it keeps that unit in harmony is the connection that those guys all have together. So worth watching. We'll see how Bowenix does here and the Broncos offense here in today's training camp practice.

Jaday Barron had a lot of high expectations facing him as a rookie in 2025 and his role might be very similar in 2026, just a little bit more elevated. We're going to shut down some of the misconceptions early on at Broncos camps. surrounding the Broncos second year former first round draft pick.

Starting point is 00:21:18 So I want to say thank you so much for rocking with this year, making us your first listening in the Lockdown Podcast Network, your team every day, plus the number one sports podcast network in the country. Sarah, I see a lot of people on social media. You know, once again, rational takes being thrown out there. I think a lot of people who don't pay too much attention to the actual practices themselves are saying a lot of crazy things. You know, the latest narrative surrounding second year former first round pick,

Starting point is 00:21:41 Judea Barron is that, oh, they moved him to safety. They did not move him to safety folks. And I get frustrated because that gets put out that he did that. And then all of a sudden people are like, oh, he's a bus. Like, no, now you're just putting more unnecessary negative PR on a player that has got a pretty important role here. And I would say this was jadez. So far at training camp, his role seems to be very similar to what we saw last year. Not only he can't, but in the regular season.

Starting point is 00:22:05 He is in the dime package. When the Broncos go 60Bs, he is going to the other slot opposite of J-Quan-McMillan. when the Broncos go into certain packages with the second team defense, he's the outside corner opposite of Chris Amish Drain, where if you look at last year and PS2 went down, what did we see? Both those guys played outside corner in that instance. It's nothing has changed.

Starting point is 00:22:26 And then where things are coming out about him potentially playing safety, it's not that. He was lined up as a dime linebacker. It's K, 6 dB's on the field. They took a linebacker out in this instance, and they brought Taleno who fogg it down in the box to play the run, because in the dime, when you go less heavy, you're more susceptible to maybe giving up a run play.

Starting point is 00:22:44 You bring Hufanga in the box to kind of take that away. And then Jadae's playing linebacker next to Alex Singleton. And then you got Brandon Jones, who's kind of showing a single high look. But here's what happens. You can drop Jaday back to the middle of field or to the other side of the other quarters out of this at that linebacker position specifically. And that's what happened in practice. And people are like, oh, my God, he's moving to safety.

Starting point is 00:23:04 He's not moving to safety. Folks, his role is going to be the same as it was last year. But, Sarah, I would say for Jada, it very much seems like they've got a little bit more of an elevated role for him in this specific thing that they identified for him last year. I think the biggest issue that a lot of folks have with Jaday, other than clearly some misinformation maybe being out there, is simply, I guess what we, I used to call like first world problems or champagne problems, right, where your first round pick from last year's draft doesn't necessarily have the

Starting point is 00:23:36 clearest path to the starting lineup right now. And he might not be a starter unless there's an injury. until his third NFL season. That seems from the outside looking in like an indictment on the player as opposed to the team just being in a really good situation. Especially I think after Riley Moss leads the NFL in penalty yardage last season, right? Folks are thinking, well, seems pretty obvious to me that now Jaday should be competing for that spot. We talked about that throughout the course of the offseason and kind of came around to the conclusion like, wait a second, Sean Payton never actually said that Riley Moss is just.

Starting point is 00:24:12 job was available. And it doesn't appear to be the case early on in training camp. Things could change when pads come on. But I doubt, I mean, I don't know. It doesn't feel like that, right? It doesn't seem like when he's been asked about it even directly at times, it doesn't seem like Riley's job is up for grabs. So therefore, I think there's a little bit more disappointment sort of cast upon Jadet because the situation that he's in seems like it's not just not favorable to him, it feels like he is the reason for that. Like, right? That's what you think a first round pick, not getting in the lineup, well, he must not be very good. That's, that's not the situation the Broncos are in.

Starting point is 00:24:53 It's a rare circumstance. I think the argument about the roster, you know, whatever, when you talk about drafting a corner in the first round, it's nice to feel like you had that luxury, but at the same time, in hindsight, did you really, like, could you have taken Schwessinger for the Browns, like the linebacker when you needed a linebacker. Could you have taken Trayvion Henderson or whoever else, right? There's hindsight discussions, but I think ultimately it's not an indictment on Jaday so much as it is a highlight of the team's cornerback room.

Starting point is 00:25:25 And you said it best there because that's the thing is Jaday is the punching back for everybody else when Jaday, this dude just puts his head down and he grinds, man. He's a great young man. I want to see him succeed. I think last year of the role that he played, even if it was limited snaps where he didn't play as many snaps as I think most people like, oh, he's a first round or he should be playing more snaps. Once again, the Broncos context and the situation that was entirely different versus other teams out there who needed a cornerback. If Jaday would have went to a team like Miami, he probably would have started every game for them and played last year.

Starting point is 00:25:55 But that was not the reality. Like Denver took him out knowing like, hey, this is a position we think is a premium value position in today's game. We saw what life was like when Riley Moss went down with an injury. We've seen what life was like when PS2 goes out with an injury. You need good cornerback depth in today's NFL with all the wide, the spread wide out receiver. I mean, the multi-wide receiver sets we're going to see, spread them out offenses. You see that. And it's like, what's your counter to that?

Starting point is 00:26:19 Oh, what has been the issue here for the Broncos over the last handful of years? What's been covering tight ends? Jaday did a pretty good job for the most part last season, playing in that role where he could guard tight-ins, including Travis Kelsey, including other guys across the board. Jaday's role is only going to amplify a little bit more. And then here's the thing, sir, naturally it plays out where, let's say, the Broncos are evaluating this year between paying Riley Moss and J-Quine. A lot of people say it's hard to pay both. They could possibly do it, but in the event that

Starting point is 00:26:46 they don't, well, guess what? Whoever doesn't get paid, it's likely Jerry sliding over to that spot. That's why he's getting outside corner reps with the second team opposite of Chris Abrams drain. And that's why he's getting reps as well inside the slot in the dime package when they got 6 dBs on the field. So I just think it's overblown, stuff like that around this time of the year. There are a lot of radio stations. Once again, narrative jadei baron slipped on one play on the first day of training camp practice and all of said oh he's terrible he slipped on a play my god like what are we doing here folks that's why no disrespect maybe a little bit i just get tired of a lot of the radio guys that come out there

Starting point is 00:27:23 and watch it they don't actually pay attention what's going on they're out there for one day and they draw this crazy conclusion when the reality a lot of us who are there every day are seeing it we've got notes like even my good friend andrew mason i love mace to death even mason's like, Jadae's just fine. Like everyone else, if you talk to Parker Gabriel, Luca Ebbott, you're going to hear from them saying like, Jaday's fine. We're all seeing the same thing from Jaday,

Starting point is 00:27:43 and it's nothing bad. So take that for what you want, Broncos country. But like I said, a lot of these other places, they need clicks. They want to be the loudest voice in the room, and they want to cause controversy.

Starting point is 00:27:53 And here we are responding to some controversy because of what they've said on social media. Jada, let him play out his role. I think he's going to be fine. I really, really do. And the Broncos seem to believe the same exact thing as well here. But training camp practice is coming up here in a couple hours.
